Middleton enters Charleston mayoral race ‘Creating opportunities and public service is at my core’

In his sophomore year at Burke High School, Clay Middleton shadowed then-Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., who asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. “I said I want to be sitting right where you are, sir,” Middleton said with a chuckle. “I have not been planning this since then, but I have not arrived at this decision lightly.” The 40-year-old Middleton plans to launch his bid to become the next mayor of Charleston this week with a short introduction video and website as he begins to speak publicly about his desire to shape his hometown’s future. Middleton spent his early years in the former Bayside Manor apartments on the city’s Eastside. He envisions a Charleston where young people will not flee to other cities for fear the city has nothing to offer them. “A lot of my peers didn’t see themselves here,” he said. “I didn’t see myself here either.” Yet here he decided to stay. After graduating in 2003 with a bachelor’s in political science from The Citadel, Middleton then went on to earn a Master’s degree in social science from his alma mater. He has enjoyed a busy career that spans government, politics, the military and the private
sector. He currently works from his West Ashley home as the managing director at Mercury, a global public affairs firm, based in Washington, D.C. He’s also a S.C. Army National Guard lieutenant colonel who commands a battalion of combat-ready troops. He is a combat veteran and Bronze Star Medal recipient for his service in Iraq. Middleton has also held a variety of key government and senior-level positions with the Obama-Biden Administration, Biden-Harris transition team, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C. He was the director of business services for the City of Charleston from 2017 until 2019.
Tired of empty promises
In 2008, Middleton ran unsuccessfully for the S.C. House of Representatives District 111 seat currently held by Rep. Wendell Gilliard, D-Charleston. Taking his second run at an elected office, Middleton said he’s in the race because he’s tired of candidates’ empty promises that have not led to equitable economic development in the city. “This is a way for me to give back to the city that has given so much to me,” he said. “We have not
planned for life after gentrification. There is more we can do, and I am confident in my capabilities to do that with a good team.” To have a say in Charleston’s future, Middleton estimates he’ll need to raise more than $1.5 million to take on the daunting task of unseating Mayor John Tecklenburg and two other candidates in the nonpartisan November 2023 race. Charleston City Councilman Peter Shahid, an attorney and 2019 mayor pro tempore, is running, too. Outgoing S.C. Rep. William Cogswell, R-Charleston, is also considering whether he’ll enter the race. The filing deadline is in August 2023. Sipping his morning coffee on the patio at Kudu Coffee and Craft Beer shop on Vanderhorst Street, Middleton emphasized he doesn’t consider himself to actually be running against his opponents, but rather running on behalf of the city of Charleston. “I am running to be that new brick in an old foundation as our city progresses,” he said. Middleton said he is concerned about issues affecting West Ashley, James and Johns islands, the balance between tourism and quality-of-life in the city, flooding, small business support, affordable and CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
A bill introduced earlier this year requires every school in South Carolina to give elementary school teachers a 30-minute break each day without students. It passed in the final days of the 2022 General Assembly session and was signed into law by Gov. Henry McMaster. Teacher groups requested the law, saying some teachers never had time to eat lunch or use the bathroom because they were watching students. While issues with teacher workload have been a topic of discussion for years, the problem was exacerbated during the pandemic. The bill passed the House and Senate unanimously before landing on McMaster’s desk. The burden now falls on local school boards to develop plans to ensure teachers get the required break. These plans must be completely implemented by 2023. A second bill which also passed the House and Senate unanimously and passed at the last minute forbids school districts from turning over debt a student owes for school lunches to a collection agency. Supporters said students need to eat regardless of their ability to pay and turning debt over to a collection agency was too drastic of a step. —Skyler Baldwin

West Ashley woman dies Friday after fall at jail A woman who reportedly jumped May 18 from a second-tier balcony died Friday, Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal confirmed. Patricia L. Sizemore, 38, of West Ashley was accused May 12 of two first-offense felony counts of controlled substance violations and two felony counts of distributing controlled substances near a school. Cash bond was set for $125,000 on May 13. Five days later about 12:40 p.m. while an inmate at the jail, she reportedly jumped from a second story balcony, according to an incident report. The State Law Enforcement Division later was asked to investigate. On Friday afternoon, Sizemore passed away, O’Neal said. Sizemore had an extensive arrest record with Charleston
County dating back to 2017 on charges ranging from DUI to shoplifting to manufacturing and selling drugs. Earlier Friday, authorities confirmed they had dismissed four felony charges Thursday after Sizemore’s fall at the Al Cannon Detention Center. “According to the sheriff’s office, it doesn’t appear she is in a state to be prosecuted,” Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson told the City Paper Friday afternoon. Andrew Knapp, a spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, said, “While the resident was being treated at the hospital following the incident, her four charges were dismissed, and she was released from CCSO custody.” Sizemore’s attorney could not be reached for comment. —Andy Brack

A look at South Carolina’s new laws
News 05.25.2022
The S.C. General Assembly passed 129 new laws during the 2022 session, including measures to spend lots of money, redraw legislative districts, allow early voting, ban vaccine mandates and keep transgender students from playing women’s sports. All but 17 have been signed into law. Gov. Henry McMaster vetoed seven bills, all dealing with county school matters, but the legislature overrode four. Among the three that were not overridden was a House-initiated measure seeking partisan school board elections in Lancaster County. For now, the county’s school board elections remain nonpartisan. Each of the remaining 17 bills was sent to the governor May 18 following the end of the session last week. Those bills, including a measure establishing minimum requirements for registers of deeds, are expected to be signed into law in coming days. Among the new laws in South Carolina:
6
Reapportionment. In keeping with federal law to redraw state House, state Senate and congressional districts, the General Assembly reapportioned district lines in a measure that drew a lawsuit from the ACLU and NAACP for being rife with gerrymandering favoring Republicans. To settle the lawsuit, state representatives agreed to redraw maps that the ACLU said will “restore Black voters’ opportunity” in Orangeburg, Richland, Kershaw, Dillon and Horry counties.
Convention of states. Lawmakers approved a resolution calling for a convention of the states to make amendments to the United States Constitution on fiscal restraints on the federal government as well as limits on its power, terms of members and jurisdiction. As of this month, 19 states passed the measure — 15 short of what’s needed for a convention to be called. Religious Freedom Act. The law provides for the “protection of the exercise of religion during a state of emergency (and) to define necessary terms to provide that religious services are deemed to be essential service during an emergency that must be allowed to continue operating,” along with other provisions. Vaccine mandates. The law says the state or its political subdivisions may not enact a vaccine mandate and may not terminate or suspend a first responder based on vaccination status, with other provisions. Election reform. State lawmakers included several election law changes, including codifying early voting up to two weeks before primary or general elections. Pandemic relief spending. Legislators authorized more than $2 billion of spending of federal pandemic relief monies, including $453 million to the state Department of Transportation to
speed road projects, $900 million to the Rural Infrastructure Authority for community water and sewer improvements, and $400 million to the Office of Regulatory Staff to extend broadband networks. Family leave. The General Assembly approved paid parental leave for “eligible state employees.” Birth mothers can get up to six weeks of paid leave at 100% of the employee’s base pay, while nonbirth partners can get up to two weeks of leave, with several provisions and restrictions. Teacher planning. A new law allows public school teachers to have 30 minutes of unencumbered time for planning. Sports act. Another law bans transgender students from playing women’s high school and college sports. Solid waste. The legislature approved new solid waste policy, management and recycling regulations, including measures related to solar panels and projects. Do not resuscitate. This law allows parents or guardians to request or revoke do-not-resuscitate orders for emergency services for children, with exceptions. Lawmakers will return to Columbia in June to finish the state budget and deal with any gubernatorial vetoes. —Andy Brack

Our state, federal endorsements for the June 14 primaries S
outh Carolina voters head to the polls June 14 to pick a host of candidates running in primaries for statewide, federal, legislative and local offices. In statewide and federal elections, we make the following endorsements in contested primaries based on past service and plans of candidates: Governor: In the Republican primary, Gov. Henry McMaster should be the GOP candidate over a raft of political unknowns who seem to think the governor, a well-known conservative and long-time backer of former President Donald Trump, isn’t conservative enough. Wrong. We wish he’d be a little more progressive on poverty, education and health care, but given the alternatives, he’s the best candidate for the job. On the Democratic side, we urge voters to give the nod to former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham, who brings a freshness and energy that the office needs. With a moderate like Cunningham in the bully pulpit providing yin to conservative yang, the General Assembly would be forced to act more responsibly.
Views 05.25.2022
State Superintendent of Education: Democrats should tap S.C. Rep. Jerry Govan, D-Orangeburg, to be their candidate for the state’s top education office. A former teacher and school administrator, this longtime state legislator has the credentials to work with the General Assembly to move public education forward. On the Republican side, we urge primary voters to pick Kathy Maness, who serves as executive director of one of the state’s teacher organizations.
8
She has political experience and is a Republican with the kind of independence needed in the job. Secretary of State: Republicans should keep Mark Hammond in this office, which he’s modernized through the years. Agriculture Secretary: Allow Republican Hugh Weathers to be a candidate to keep his job. He continues to do good work by putting South Carolina agriculture first. Attorney General: No endorsement in the Republican primary. U.S. Senate: Democratic voters can pick among three women to be the party candidate against GOP Sen. Tim Scott in the fall. We recommend S.C. Rep. Krystle Matthews, D-Ladson, to wear the party’s mantle in the November election. U.S. Congress, District 1: We don’t always agree with Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace because of how she preens and panders in the media, but she is far and away the only solid Republican candidate in this race. U.S. Congress, District 6: Longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn deserves to be reelected to continue national leadership in Congress. In our view, he’s the best thing South Carolina has going for it in Congress. No recommendation for a GOP challenger. Next week: Endorsements for Charleston County primary candidates.

Support after-school mental health program By Emily Kerr, special to Charleston City Paper
The Covid-19 global pandemic has exacerbated the mental health crisis and our children are at the forefront of that crisis.
Students walk into schools daily carrying the burdens of poverty and bearing the weight of psychological issues that continue to go unnoticed. Because mental health has not been prioritized thus far, our schools are inundated with needs they cannot meet. The lack of resources, personnel and services causes our students to suffer and our teachers are required to teach and step into the roles of counselor and social worker on most days. School districts, school administration, teachers and parents feel a sense of urgency to find community partners to help increase mental health services in our schools. Charleston Hope is eager to be one of those partners and create a sustainable school-based mental health program for local Title I schools. [Title I schools benefit from federal aid to help schools with large numbers of low-income students.] Living in a poor or low-income household has been linked to poor health and increased risk for mental health problems in children and adults that can persist across the life span. According to the National Institutes of Health: “Children less than 18
years old are disproportionately affected by poverty, making up 33% of all people in poverty. Despite their high need for mental health services, children and families living in poverty are least likely to be connected with high-quality mental health care.” Many people living in poverty face obstacles, such as a lack of insurance or transportation, that prevent them from accessing mental health services. The daily stressors and burdens of living in poverty worsen the effects of these obstacles, which can hinder parents from getting their children the treatment they need. Studies show that 80% of students who need mental health services do not receive them because existing mental health services are inadequate or the barriers of poverty limit accessibility. Of the students who receive assistance, 70% to 80% receive their mental health services in school, according to the National Association of School Psychologists. Studies show that students are 21 times more likely to visit school-based mental health services than community mental health services. At Charleston Hope, we believe children who have experienced trauma or need mental health support deserve access to high-quality mental health services despite their socioeconomic status or ZIP code. Charleston Hope is actively working to minimize and eliminate the obstacles to receiving

quality mental health care. As part of a three-tiered mental health initiative, our new Mental Health After School Program will include creating an after-school mental health services model that includes cognitive and body-based therapy, contracting licensed professional counselors and social workers to conduct cognitive sessions, implementing a multi-purpose needs assessment tool to track student growth and services, providing school-wide trauma-informed training and fundraising efforts to pay for this initiative. Eight Charleston Hope Heroes and influencers in the community are raising money for Charleston Hope, including a news anchor, teachers at various Charleston schools, fitness influencers and students in our Step-In Girls Empowerment program. These groups have set a goal to raise $20,000 for Charleston Hope. This year’s festival is a matter of time and place By Michael Smallwood
“W
e’re extremely excited. We’re so fired up to have this finally happen.” That’s the sentiment that Mena Mark Hanna, the new general director of Spoleto Festival USA, is carrying into the 2022 season, which kicks off May 27 and runs through June 12. After 2021’s smaller pandemic edition, and no edition in 2020, Spoleto Festival USA is looking to get back on track in 2022 with a program populated by some of the best artists in the world. It’s taken tremendous work, planning and logistics to get to this point. Some shows that were originally scheduled for this year (Meow Meow, Moby Dick) have unfortunately been pulled or Hanna adjusted. The global pandemic that canceled the 2020 festival and shaped the entirety of 2021 is still ongoing. Inflation has affected production costs. And there’s a shortage of skilled stage labor, as the extended time away from live performance drove many to the world of film. Despite these hurdles though, Spoleto Festival USA has managed to produce several works to debut this year in Charleston.

Omar finally takes center stage
Omar is Spoleto’s centerpiece production. The opera tells the story of Omar Ibn Said, an African scholar who was enslaved in the Carolinas. “Omar has been on such a journey through the pandemic,” said Hanna.
POWER Photos by Todd Rosenberg Photography; William Struhs; Christopher Duggan
The opera has been in the works for over two years. The original performance by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels was supposed to debut during the 2020 season, with an entire festival slate built around its themes and influences. Not only does this highly anticipated opera finally open on May 27, but Giddens will perform a one-night concert with Francesco Turrisi on May 28, another holdover from the lost 2020 festival. Omar’s themes continue to influence this year’s festival and have lost none of their timeliness. “That piece in particular in 2020, it takes on a completely different significance now in 2022,” said Hanna. “There is something about going through the convulsion of the pandemic, the ongoing divisions in our society along racial and equity lines and understanding Omar as not really something that is historic but something wherein our history bleeds into our present.”
Recasting history
History is a big theme throughout the festival this year. At nearly 130 years old, La bohème has been a staple of the opera canon since it first opened. This year’s Spoleto production, first mounted in Chicago, will shake things up when it opens on May 28 by presenting the acts in reverse order. Unholy Wars, opening on May 29, will look at the Crusades through a Muslim lens.
Something for everyone
While the operas are the power trio of this year’s festival, there are plenty of fantastic works for fans of other disciplines. Spoleto 2022 boasts more than 120 performances, a big departure from last year’s conservative offering of around 45. Group as the kind of show he hopes audiences will turn out for. Running just two performances May 28-29, POWER explores the history of African American Shaker communities through dance. “I love Reggie Wilson because he brings to his work a kind of scholarly methodology,” said Hanna. “Understanding our origin points, understanding what our past is, and sort of trying to shed new light on that past so that we can have a newness and comprehension of our present that we didn’t have before we took our seats.” Theater lovers have much to rejoice in after last year’s thin offerings. Irish playwright Mark O’Rowe’s The Approach brings deep human connections to the Dock Street Theatre starting May 26. Dael Orlandersmith brings her one-woman show Until the Flood to Festival Hall on June 3, playing eight distinct characters reacting to a national emergency. Musical sensation Storm Large will do a cabaret show at Festival Hall starting May 26 that mixes songs and sensuality. And starting June 8, Machine de Cirque will thrill audiences with live music and astounding physical theater feats. Inspired by last year’s Ballet Under the Stars, Ballet Encore will bring together many of the best dancers from New York City to create an exciting program starting June 1. This collection of dancers includes South Carolina-born Sara Mearns, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Malpaso Dance Company, whose show at the Sottile Theatre starts June 10, comes all the way from Cuba with a show the LA Times calls “a pinch-me moment, one of those times when you catch an artistic dawning.” Unlike last year, you can still get tickets to the always-popular Bank of America Chamber Music series. But like last year, you can still catch the recorded concerts at 11 a.m., weekdays, on South Carolina Public Radio during the “Sonatas and Soundscapes” broadcast. Those start May 27 at the Dock Street Theatre and run through the entire festival. There’s more music to be found in a collection of one-off performances: Fast-fingered Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway on June 9; Beloved The War and Treaty on June 2; Grammy-nominated soulful singer Allison Russel on June 1; Grammy-winning MacArthur Fellow Cécile McLorin Salvant on June 10. Catch Tyshawn Sorey perform with Aaron Diehl and Matt Brewer in a jazz-trio show on June 4 and again with the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in a show dedicated to Sorey’s work on June 6. Nduduzo Makhathini brings spirituality on May 30 in an improvisational piano show influenced by his South African heritage and career as a Zulu healer. Youssou

“Hey, do you want to write an opera with me?” So said Grammy-winning musician and MacArthur fellow Rhiannon Giddens (more or less) to acclaimed composer Michael Abels. Giddens was commissioned to compose the opera Omar for Spoleto Festival USA, and felt she needed a writing partner. Although Giddens and Abels had never worked together, they shared a mutual admiration for each other’s music. Giddens, who earned a degree in opera performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and is famous for her work in musical acts including The Carolina Chocolate Drops, had never composed an opera before. She described contacting Abels as instinctual: “I had no idea what he thought about opera, if at all, and I just reached out cold.” It turned out that Abels, who has been composing orchestral works for decades and received critical adoration for composing the scores of Jordan Peele’s films Get Out and Us, always wanted to compose an opera. The art form, with all its depth and grandeur, excites him. “Opera is an incredible storytelling medium,” he said. “And it really invites audiences to go on a journey — a journey that is music-driven but, at the same time, includes and incorporates every possible art to put on a stage.” Several years into their collaboration, Giddens and Abels continue to sing each other’s praises. “I think she’s an ideal collaborator because she will say, ‘Here’s what works, and here’s what’s speaking to me,’ and then she invites me, or whoever she works with, to bring their own A-game,” Abels said. “I don’t know that I could have found a better person to create this piece with, because he could almost read my mind,” Giddens added. Giddens wrote the music the only way she knew, not with pen and paper but with her voice or her instruments, sending the audio files to Abels. He, in turn, would add or augment harmonies and build the music for a full orchestra. “I would hear what he had done with the material that I sent, and it just felt so natural to me,” said Giddens, who also wrote Omar’s libretto.

Teamwork. Rhiannon Giddens (above) and Michael Abels (below) entered into a deep operatic partnership to bring the story of Omar Ibn Said to life.
Inspirational material
Both musicians were deeply inspired by the material, as was director Kaneza Schaal. Omar is based on the autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, a Muslim scholar who was torn from his home in Senegal and sold into slavery in 1807. Like hundreds of thousands of other Africans, he disembarked in Charleston after a harrowing and dehumanizing journey. Omar broke free and fled to North Carolina, but was ultimately recaptured. His autobiography is the only known memoir of a slave written in Arabic. Omar’s story is one of astonishing resilience and audacious faith, and this production is part of a movement to

expand and reimagine the opera canon. “Here we have this text written by Omar, a man who was literate before he became enslaved,” said Schaal, who works in film and theater as well as opera. “And the glory and triumph that these words exist, even if generated under duress, is magnificent. It’s holy.” Giddens, a native of North Carolina, was shocked that she had not heard of Omar before. The Spoleto production is about exhuming forgotten and erased histories, a practice that is essential to Giddens’ artistry. She strives to challenge the hegemonic concept of what it means to be an American. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Aisling O’Sullivan (left) and Derbhle Crotty create a mystery for the audience to solve in Mark O’Rowe’s The Approach
THEATER
By Gabriel Veiga The Approach might have you playing detective at the Dock Street Theatre. “There’s a mystery to be worked out within the scenes,” said playwright Mark O’Rowe, who is also directing his Dock Street Theatre production at Spoleto Festival USA starting May 26. “But also if you don’t work it out, it should work.” The 60-minute play tells the story of two sisters and their friend over three separate conversations. As the characters’ layers are unveiled, the audience slowly discovers different truths about their relationships to one another. After these three conversations, a fourth scene goes back and repeats the very first. “It is, you know, like a snake swallowing its own tail,” O’Rowe said. “And it connects to the beginning of the play again … So we see the beginning of the play twice. But knowing the context of everything that’s happened in between the beginning of the play kind of changes the meaning.” The play premiered in Dublin in 2018. Two of the performers from that production, Derbhle Crotty and Aisling O’Sullivan, will be joined in Charleston by twotime Irish Times Theatre Award winner Catherine Walker, who plays the friend. O’Sullivan said she was looking forward to revisiting the work. “There’s always something new that comes in,” she said. “It’s sort of a strange opening into how you’ve
changed or something since you did it last. And I’m really interested in revisiting the play with a different actress.” The prolific O’Rowe (Howie the Rookie, Terminus) has earned a reputation for what the Scottish Daily Mail has described as his “in your face fireworks shows.” But he says The Approach is not like that at all. “You start off in your late 20s, and all you want to do is show, you know, the fireworks,” O’Rowe said. “You want to give them the most complex, convoluted, energized kind of language, and show you can push everything to the extreme — lots of violence and sex. I’m very proud of the work I did back then, but I think it’s a little bit like, ‘Look at me.’ ” By contrast, he said, “As you get older, you get a bit more confident in your abilities, but also, being older, you begin to look at things a little more deeply.” That depth shows in the added responsibility of directing his own work — something O’Rowe has been doing since 2007. Earlier in his career, he would write plays and let someone else take over the directing. “It was somebody else’s interpretation,” he said. “That was always very much frustrating.” He now prefers to direct the initial production of each of his plays. “It’s kind of great because you have so many of the answers to hang on very quickly,” O’Rowe said. “And those you don’t have, you kind of have the confidence to go searching CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Karim Sulayman (left) and the cast of Unholy Wars rehearse the multi-disciplinary production that will receive its world premier at Spoleto Festival USA
OPERA
Unholy Wars seeks to reframe the Western musical canon By Ellen E. Mintzer Karim Sulayman is having a whirlwind of a spring. The Lebanese American, Grammywinning tenor made his solo debut at the storied Carnegie Hall on May 19 before flying the next day to Charleston for the Spoleto Festival USA. At the festival, he will perform the world premiere of Unholy Wars, a mixed-media, multidisciplinary piece he conceived in response to his relationship with Western classical music. “It’s an insane time for me, but you know, I’m living the dream, baby,” said Sulayman with a laugh during a recent phone conversation with City Paper. The centerpiece of the performance is the Italian Baroque opera Sulayman Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by Claudio Monteverdi, a story of the Crusades depicting a battle between a Christian knight and a Muslim warrior woman. Opera and classical music are simultaneously art forms that Sulayman said he loves passionately and ones that position him, an Arab American, as the other and even the enemy. Unholy Wars is Sulayman’s attempt
to reconcile those competing experiences and reclaim the narrative of the music that has been his life’s work. Sulayman spoke about the significance of recontextualizing the opera repertoire he loves and bringing his own voice to it. “When material is presented that you feel like ‘your people’ are being represented, it’s important to take that story and to put your stamp on it,” he said. “I mean, these are stories about people from where my family is actually from. So I think that there’s something important to have an Arab represented in that repertoire, and that’s not really ever been the case.”
A wedding opened the door
Sulayman initially connected with Spoleto Festival USA General Director Mena Mark Hanna by direct-messaging him on Twitter. The two knew each other vaguely, having both attended the wedding of a mutual friend years ago, and Sulayman had a sense that Hanna would be interested in the piece. He was right. “If you could think of an idea for an Egyptian who’s got a background in musicology, and who has talked about and written about some of the problems of colonization in the canon — it’s almost like it was CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Artifacts Syracuse graduate students to cover 2022 Piccolo/Spoleto Festival
Feature 05.25.2022
Charleston City Paper this week welcomes six arts journalism graduate students as part of the newspaper’s effort to amplify coverage during the 2022 Spoleto Festival USA and its Piccolo Spoleto counterpart. The aspiring arts journalists are in Charleston as part of a capstone course with the Goldring Arts Journalism program at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communications. “We are delighted to be working with the City Paper to help with coverage of the annual Spoleto festival,” said Joel Kaplan, associate dean at the Newhouse School. The Goldring program trains art critics and writers with backgrounds in film, theater, music, architecture and other art forms. “By the time they come to Charleston for their capstone experience, they are already professionals and ready to hit the ground running,” Kaplan said. As part of their coursework, the students will contribute exclusive previews, reviews and other on-the-ground accounts of their time in the Holy City for readers of the Charleston City Paper. You can keep up with the latest on the festivals at the top of the newspaper’s website in the light blue festival box. You can also learn more by reading the newspaper’s special guide to Piccolo Spoleto 2022. Students joining the staff during the festival include: Natalie Bono, Katie Kiessling, Ellen Mintzer, Riley Utley, Gabriel Veiga and Tina Zhu. —Andy Brack

“I think that’s really been my push to diversify people’s idea of what the American story is because it is a very diverse story,” she said. “I’ve just been going digging and finding the stories that speak to me personally as an artist and then trying to highlight them, and trying to give them the spotlight.” Abels also spoke of how Omar’s story enhances our understanding of American identity. “There are many American stories that are not told, either in our schools or in our history in general, and hearing our history from the perspective of everyone who is an American is something that needs to happen,” he said. “It gives everyone a greater understanding of who we are in the world today.”

tailor-made for me, this project, so I was very excited to talk to him about it,” Hanna said. Hanna was so taken with the idea that he wanted to premier the opera at Spoleto 2022, his first season as general director. That created a tight timeline, but Sulayman and the team at the Up Until Now Collective, which is co-producing the piece, said they could make it happen. The collective was founded in the summer of 2020 when a dozen artists gathered to make a short film at a former boy’s camp in New Hampshire owned by the family of Unholy Wars director Kevin Newbury. Sulayman, a friend of Newbury’s, shared his idea for Unholy Wars, which became one of the first projects the nascent collective took on. Newbury described the need to bring the piece to life at warp speed as a joyful challenge. “Sometimes when you’re forced to make really fast decisions, the work can feel so fresh and alive,” Newbury said. Newbury is just as busy this spring as Sulayman. In the first half of May he was developing ’86, a new musical about a community in New York City at the height of the AIDS crisis. Newbury opened the musical in San Diego on May 21 and then hopped on a red-eye flight to Charleston. He said his passion, as a member of the
The influences on the opera
Giddens and Abels are both resistant to rigid genre categorizations in their music. Giddens noted that genres were invented in order to sell music, and simply says that she plays American music. Abels thinks of genres in music as like accents in a language. The two drew on varied influences in composing Omar, including Senegalese music and Black American music. Giddens mentioned incorporating vernacular stylistic elements, and Abels cited Porgy and Bess, an iconic opera set in Charleston, as a necessary influence. Omar was originally scheduled to premier at Spoleto in 2020, but was delayed for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Giddens said she and Abels completed the bulk of the composing in 2020. While the delay was unfortunate, it didn’t significantly affect their workflow: Abels is based in Los Angeles while Giddens
currently calls Ireland home, so they were accustomed to working remotely. Schaal, by contrast, signed on to direct Omar less than a year ago, which was late for a project of this scale. Although the accelerated timeline was not ideal, she said she found joy in it. “There’s something potent about deadlines and urgency in making art,” Schaal said. “I think the intensity and depth of the collaboration that was demanded by the short time frame has produced everything I could have hoped for.” Omar runs May 27-June 12 at the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre. Tickets start at $76.50. To order tickets or for more information, check spoletousa.org/events/omar. Ellen E. doesn’t realize you have written about your character, or you know, whatever your interpretation is.” O’Rowe said he really wants The Approach to generate conversations in the U.S., not about politics or the state of the world but about the play itself. “It’s not a controversial play,” he said. “But what it is, is it’s a play that really compels people to get together and go, ‘What do you think happened?’ Or ‘What do you think it
means when she said that?’ ‘Did you not think this?’ ‘Is this one alive or dead?’ ‘Is this it?’ ”
collective and as a director of opera, theater and film, lies in developing new work and highlighting marginalized stories. “What interests me is finding the stories that aren’t being told, whether it’s a queer sensibility, an Arab American perspective, the deaf community — that’s sort of the throughline with all of my work right now,” Newbury said.
design. Those ropes will get moved around and be used as weapons in the battle between Tancredi and Clorinda. “The themes of the piece are really centered around the idea of borders and the way homo sapiens make up borders and make up rules and how we transcend those borders,” Newbury said. “How do we actually bring people together?” The creative team decided on a multidisciplinary presentation in hopes that it would encourage audiences to appraise the material with fresh eyes. “I think that there’s something interesting — when you present it in a way that’s unexpected you bring in a modern dance element to it, you bring in visual design by a modern artist that isn’t just creating sort of a Baroque landscape, or what one would assume would be a Baroque visual landscape, but that’s something new,” Sulayman said. “You’re taking in something — and the choreography in the same way — you’re taking in something with your eyes that’s unexpected, and that forces you to literally look at things in a different way.”
Transcending borders
Unholy Wars, which will debut May 29 at the Dock Street Theatre, will feature original compositions by Armenian American composer Mary Kouyoumdjian interspersed with the Monteverdi piece and other selections from the Baroque canon. The performance will also include elements of dance and illustrations by Syrian visual artist Kevork Mourad. Kouyoumdjian is another friend of Sulayman’s. “Because Karim is hoping to bring this conversation around borders and colonialism and culture into a more modern setting, we thought it could really help to have some original music that acts as interludes between this older music and that could offer some kind of commentary on the preexisting music,” Kouyoumdjian said. The set will be relatively sparse and include ropes arranged on the stage to represent borders. Mourad will incorporate the recurring theme of maps into his visual

edea Duffy and Shelly Bellil opened their shop Local Love CHS, now in a new location off of Camp Road on James Island, to help shoppers find locally made items every day. The shop sells products from more than 75 artisans and makers exclusive to the Charleston area. “We want to make it easy for people to buy local, supporting local artisans and their creative journeys, and in turn to support our local economy by shifting their spending away from big-box one-click shopping,” Duffy said. Duffy and Bellil launched the shop in 2019 as a booth in an antique market. Though they found success, the pandemic hit shortly after, introducing new challenges to opening a business. For the next two years, they offered products through an online store as well as local delivery services.
Local Love CHS opened a small space in a Riverland Terrace salon in mid2021, but recently upgraded to their new 2,100-square-foot space on Camp Road. The shop offers an array of locally-made items from candles and coffee to books, clothing and jewelry including local brands like Vibey Soap Company, Natural Blonde Bloody Mary Mix, Rosie the Wanderer and the Seabird Society. Shoppers can also purchase curated boxes such as the “Little Bundle” for new parents, “Happy Couple” for newlyweds and more. Customers can also choose to make their own boxes in store or online. Along with supporting local makers, Local Love CHS aims to be as sustainable as possible, sourcing products with eco-friendly packaging and ingredients, Duffy said.

My Dream Dinner
Cocktails with Prince, Morrison and Baldwin Megan Barbee Banker of downtown Charleston wants to sit down with the legendary Prince, Toni Morrison and James Baldwin to enjoy a cheesy appetizer, spicy cocktail, Asian tofu dish and a sweet treat. DREAM DINNER GUESTS: Prince, Morrison and Baldwin DRINK: El Diablo from the Gin Joint. “The El Diablo is a grown-up, spicy version of the preferred beverage of someone whose favorite flavor is ‘red.’ I’m that kind of someone.” APPETIZER: Whipped feta and bacon wrapped dates from Butcher & Bee. “You have your salt with the bacon and feta, your sweet with the dates and fermented honey. It’s hot, crispy meat and soft cheese. What could possibly be wrong?”
Courtesy Jackrabbit Filly
ENTREE: Chili tofu from Jackrabbit Filly. “I am not crazy about tofu, but this dish is one of the best things I have ever tasted. The tofu totally absorbs the chili garlic sauce and the ricotta gnocchi are like little dream puffs.” DESSERT: Cinnamon biscuit from Callie’s Biscuits. “Fresh out of the oven. If there is ice cream involved, I am OK with that.”

Free Will Astrology ARIES (March 21-April 19): In defining the essential elements at play in a typical Aries person’s agenda, I’m not inclined to invoke the words “sometimes” or “maybe.” Nor do I make frequent use of the words “periodically,” “if” or “ordinarily.” Instead, my primary identifying term for many Aries characters is “NOW!!!” with three exclamation points. In referring to your sign’s experiences, I also rely heavily on the following descriptors: pronto, presto, push, directly, why not?, engage, declare, activate, venture into, enterprising, seize, deliver and wield. You are authorized to fully activate and deploy these qualities in the next three weeks. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I like Joan Didion’s definitions of self-respect. As you enter a favorable phase for deepening and enhancing your self-respect, they may be helpful. Didion said selfrespect is a “sense of one’s intrinsic worth,” and added, “People who respect themselves are willing to accept the risk that the venture will go bankrupt, that the liaison may not turn out to be one in which every day is a holiday. They are willing to invest something of themselves.” And maybe the most essential thing about self-respect, according to Didion, is that it is “a discipline, a habit of mind that can never be faked but can be developed, trained, coaxed forth.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Reality is not simply there; it does not simply exist,” claimed author Paul Celan. “It must be sought out and won.” I think that is excellent advice for you right now. But what does it mean in practical terms? How can you seek out and win reality? My first suggestion is to put your personal stamp on every situation you encounter. Do something subtle or strong to make each event serve your specific interests and goals. My second suggestion is to discern the illusions that other people are projecting and avoid buying into those misunderstandings. My third suggestion is to act as if it’s always possible to make life richer, more vivid and more meaningful. And then figure out how to do that. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Wilma Mankiller was the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. She said, “The cow runs away from the storm, while the buffalo charges directly toward it—and gets through it quicker.” Political analyst Donna Brazile expounded on Mankiller’s strategy: “Whenever I’m confronted with a tough challenge, I do not prolong the torment. I become the buffalo.” I recommend Mankiller’s and Brazile’s approach for you and me in the coming days, my fellow Cancerian. Now please excuse me as I race in the direction of the squall I see brewing in the distance. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The New Yorker is an influential Pulitzer Prize-winning magazine that features witty writing and impeccable fact-checking. In 2017, its stories exposed the extensive sexual misconduct committed by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein — and helped lead to his prosecution. How did the magazine get its start? It was co-founded in 1925 by Harold Ross, who had dropped out of school at age 13. He edited every issue for the next 26 years. I’m sensing the possibility of a comparable development in your life, Leo. In the coming months, you may get involved in a project that seems to be beyond the reach of your official capacities or formal credentials. I urge you to proceed as if you can and will succeed. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo-born Jocko Willink is a retired naval officer and author. In his book Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual, he lays down his manifesto: “Become the discipline — embrace its cold and relentless power. And it will make you better and stronger and smarter and faster and healthier than anything else. And most important: It will make you free.” While I don’t expect you to embrace Willink’s rigorous ethic with the same fanatical grip, I think you will benefit from doing the best you can. The cosmic rhythms will support you if you make a fun and earnest effort to cultivate liberation through discipline. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Some nights you are the lighthouse, some nights the sea,” writes Libran
By Rob Brezsny
author Ocean Vuong. According to my astrological analysis, you are better suited to be the lighthouse than the sea in the coming days. Lately, you have thoroughly embodied the sea, and that has prepared you well to provide illumination. You have learned new secrets about the tides and the waves. You are attuned to the rhythms of the undercurrents. So I hope you will now embrace your role as a beacon, Libra. I expect that people will look to your radiance to guide and inspire them. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Movie people are possessed by demons, but a very low form of demons,” observes author Edna O’Brien. She should know. She has hung out with many big film stars. Since you’re probably not in the movie business yourself, your demons may be much higher quality than those of celebrity actors and directors. And I’m guessing that in the coming weeks, your demons will become even finer and more interesting than ever before — even to the point that they could become helpers and advisors. For the best results, treat them with respect and be willing to listen to their ideas. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I’m all in favor of you getting what you yearn for. I have no inhibitions or caveats as I urge you to unleash all your ingenuity and hard work in quest of your beautiful goals. And in the hope of inspiring you to upgrade your ability to fulfill these sacred prospects, I offer you a tip from Sagittarian author Martha Beck. She wrote, “To attract something that you want, become as joyful as you think that thing would make you.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): According to author Caroline Myss, “You should see everything about your life as a lesson.” Whoa! Really? Each trip to the grocery store should be a learning opportunity? Myss says yes! For example, let’s say you’re in the snack foods aisle and you’re tempted to put Doritos Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips and Lay’s Barbecue Potato Chips in your cart. But your gut is screaming at you, “That stuff isn’t healthy for you!” And yet you decide to ignore your gut’s advice. You buy and eat both bags. Myss would say you have squandered a learning opportunity: “You’ve harmed yourself by blocking your intuitive voice,” she writes. Now, in accordance with astrological omens, Capricorn, here’s your homework assignment: Regard every upcoming event as a chance to learn how to trust your intuition better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): An Aquarian poet was disturbed when a suitor told her, “I’m really very fond of you.” She responded, “I don’t like fond. It sounds like something you would tell a dog. Give me love, or nothing. Throw your fond in a pond.” I don’t advise you to adopt a similar attitude anytime soon, Aquarius. In my oracular opinion, you should wholeheartedly welcome fondness. You should honor it and celebrate it. In itself, it is a rich, complex attitude. And it may also lead, if you welcome it, to even more complex and profound interweavings. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I need a playlist of all the songs I used to love but forgot about,” wrote Tumblr blogger Yuyuuyuyuu. I think you could use such a playlist, too, Pisces. In fact, I would love to see you receive a host of memos that remind you of all the things you love and need and are interested in — but have forgotten about or neglected. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to recover what has been lost. I hope you will re-establish connections and restore past glories that deserve to accompany you into the future. Béla Fleck brings his bluegrass heart along
Party at the Point still has plenty to take the stage
By Chelsea Grinstead American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck just took home his 16th Grammy, and this time around, it was for Best Bluegrass Album for the 2021 record My Bluegrass Heart. On May 26, his national My Bluegrass Heart tour will make a stop at Charleston Music Hall downtown. “The weird thing about me is I come from New York City, and I fell in love with bluegrass even though there’s no cultural background in my family or in my world or where I came from,” Fleck told City Paper. He remembers hearing the banjo for the first time at about 5 years old when he listened to Earl Scruggs play on The Beverly Hillbillies sitcom. “I think I was an unactivated banjo player waiting for the call,” Fleck said. “When I heard the sound of this banjo, I was like, ‘Oh my God whatever that is I love it.’ It took time to actually get a banjo, but from then on, I was banjo-aware. I was in love with that sound, and I never actually thought I could do it because it sounded impossible that anybody could play that instrument.” Fleck finally laid hands on his first banjo at age 15. And while he was mildly interested in music as a kid, when he picked up that banjo, he morphed into a total music fanatic. He simply couldn’t put the instrument down. “I was completely activated at that point,” he joked. Fleck traversed the worlds of country, pop, jazz, classical and everything in between as he expanded the possibilities of what the banjo could actually do. But bluegrass was something he would always come back to through the decades. To that end, My Bluegrass Heart is the third installment in a bluegrass trilogy that exists within Fleck’s vast discography. The first was 1988’s Drive and the second was 1999’s The Bluegrass Sessions: Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol.2.

Béla Fleck's new album My Bluegrass Heart was laid down in live-to-tape recording sessions before the 2020 pandemic struck, which gives the album a roomy, vintage feel “Looking back, [Drive] was one of the best projects I’ve been a part of, and it was just a bit of luck,” Fleck said. “There’s fairy dust sprinkled into that record.” Drive and Bluegrass Sessions are sonic chronicles of the boundary-bending material coming from musicians at the center of the progressive bluegrass scene in the ’80s and ’90s including Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas as well as elders of the craft, John Hartford and Vassar Clements. “These people were on the edge of bluegrass but were touching base with the origins yet stretching it in a certain, very particular way,” Fleck said. “In playing with those people and finding those partners in crime, it was possible to do progressive music that was very rooted, very solid. The rhythm was going to be there, the feel was going to be there. The music was going to dance. It was going to be melodic, yet we were exploring new directions.” And some 20 years later, that same spirit infuses My Bluegrass Heart. Fleck’s newest album features a roster of old friends from the Drive/Bluegrass Sessions years, plus players from a new generation of progressive music such as Chris Thile, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull. “I started out thinking I had these tunes that really fit in that mold of Drive and Bluegrass Sessions,” Fleck said. “But as I went along, I thought, ‘Why be restricted? Why not take advantage of all these musical experiences I’ve had outside of bluegrass?’”

The 19 instrumental tracks that comprise My Bluegrass Heart are truly variations on a theme, stitching together sections of straightforward bluegrass with exploratory compositions and diverse harmonic textures. “It can be very intimidating to start from scratch. You have to get to a point where you’re not comparing yourself to everyone else — you’re trying to express yourself. Once you see that, nobody can beat you because there’s only one you. You can only lose by getting intimidated by the very process. You just have to write all the time so you’re good at it, so there’s a flow. “I’ve sort of become a curator of a certain musical point of view.” Joining Fleck at the Music Hall on May 26 are fiddle player Michael Cleveland, mandolinist Jacob Jolliff, guitarist Cody Kilby and multiinstrumentalists Justin Moses and Mark Schatz.

Eliza Shillieto, the singer-songwriter known by her artist name Eliza Novella, is an old soul. This trait not only influenced her decision to move from Boston to Charleston in 2020 (she loves old buildings and cobblestone streets), but it also plays a key role in the music she creates. “I coined this phrase very recently, but I think it really fits: vintage indie-pop,” Novella said of her melodic stylings. Her voice is soulful yet clear. It could sound just as at home on an old jazz record as it does with her preferred sonic backdrop of hazy guitar. She began to hone this style in 2018, when she recorded her first album, Wavy Sounds. “I was always playing acoustic guitar and playing nice little singer-songwriter-y things, and then I moved down to Florida,” she said. “I was really into Mac Demarco at the time, and I bought an electric guitar and I just couldn’t stop playing it. This very jazzy, moody guitar feels like me.” With new music releases on the horizon, she hopes to follow the same inspiration yet create a more full-bodied sound. “Red and Blue,” a track Novella recorded in New York City in 2019, will be rereleased as a single at the end of the month. “The production value is a little more layered: backing band, more instruments,” she said. Initially released only on YouTube, Novella reckoned “Red and Blue” deserved a more dramatic release. She will pair the track with her very first music video — shot on Morris Island by local photographer and singer-songwriter Taylor Czerwinski with editing and coloring contributed by local musician Corey Campbell of Babe Club. “I love film and I’m such a color and visual person and it’s a whole new avenue and medium that I’ve never delved into,” Novella said. Lyrically, “Red and Blue” tells the story of family members not approving of a love

Singer-songwriter Eliza Novella will release her 2019 track “Red and Blue” with a music video shot on Morris Island interest. Though Novella’s writing is largely a narrative, the video takes a more interpretative route, exploring symbolism through color and carefully chosen costumes. “It’s an internal battle of trying to decide whether or not you want to truly act out on your authentic self and be honest, or if you want to be what is expected of you,” Novella said. The “Red and Blue” video release party will take place at Folly Beach bar and restaurant Chico Feo on May 30. Novella will be jamming with Katie Lyon and other featured artists as they celebrate the song. “I really love bringing people together,” Novella said. “I think this means I’m going to be putting out more music videos, because this has been such a fun process.” —Kate Bryan
