Pro-choice protesters on Saturday gathered outside City Hall to demand that abortions remain available in South Carolina
Liberals seethe, conservatives relieved over abortion ruling
News 06.29.2022
From staff reports

Across South Carolina, as in the rest of the nation, political liberals are fuming while religious conservatives are relieved about a controversial Friday decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to end constitutional protections for women seeking abortions. Pro-choice activists seethed that the conservative court voted 6-3 to gut the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and take away a freedom that allowed a woman to determine whether to be pregnant. In the new case, called Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the court upheld by a 20-week abortion ban in Mississippi. A version of the ban passed last year in several states, including South Carolina. In the Dobbs case, the court asserted a person does not inherently have the right to privacy and that no provision in the U.S. Constitution protects the right to abortion. Associate Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion declared the court’s decision in Roe v. Wade that protected abortion was “egregiously wrong from the start” and that “its reasoning was exceptionally weak.” The Friday decision does not ban abortions in the U.S., but it turns the decision over to the states.
Reactions differ in Charleston
At a Saturday protest outside Charleston City Hall that drew about 200 people, one angry person summed up the sentiments
of many: “It’s unfair that other people’s religious beliefs are dictating our bodies. I feel like I have no autonomy.” Protesters held signs with slogans like “Pro-life is a lie. You don’t care if women die” and “You can’t trust me with a choice but trust me with a child?” Another person who attended the peaceful rally said the six justices who voted to overturn the Roe decision claimed to be pro-life, but were really just pro-birth. “If they really cared about the life and health of the child, they would be supporting federal programs to provide childcare, medical and health care and focus on improving the safety of children.” But outside a grocery store across the peninsula on Monday, in comments that highlighted how the hot-button issue of abortion splits neighbors, several area residents supported the court’s decision. “I am pretty happy with the decision,” one person said. A downtown female resident reflected, “Well, I wish we had gotten here sooner, and we probably would have if we still had [Donald] Trump as president.” A West Ashley woman added, “This is hopefully the first step in a long journey in getting the country back on the right path with the Lord. We’ve prayed for this for so long, and we can finally breathe a sigh of relief and know that we are on the right track.” A man who lives downtown said he hadn’t read a lot about the court’s decision, “but I do know that the decision of the Supreme Court is going to drastically
reduce the number of abortions, and that’s a victory for thousands of babies, thousands of families, in America.” Meanwhile, Friday, in a separate decision, the high court ruled in a contradictory manner to the Dobbs case that directed laws on abortion to be decided by states. In a ruling on a New York statute on guns, the court said the state did not have the authority to make decisions on whether a person could carry a concealed weapon.
South Carolina leaders react to abortion decision
Elected South Carolina leaders on Friday quickly went to social media and other platforms to shout cries of victory or grief over the court’s abortion decision. “Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a resounding victory for the Constitution and for those who have worked for so many years to protect the lives of the most vulnerable among us,” Gov. Henry McMaster wrote on Twitter. “By the end of the day, we will file motions so that the Fetal Heartbeat Act will go into effect in South Carolina and immediately begin working with members of the General Assembly to determine the best solution for protecting the lives of unborn South Carolinians.” On Monday, a federal judge in South Carolina lifted an injunction that blocked the six-week so-called “fetal heartbeat” CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
Gov. Henry McMaster last week vetoed $53 million in the $14 billion 2022-23 state budget proposed by S.C. legislators. Among other things, he cited objections to personal ties with legislators’ families. McMaster said he did not condone taxpayer dollars benefiting families of elected officials in his June 22 veto message. State legislators were slated to vote to sustain or override the governor’s vetoes on June 28. McMaster made a specific objection to a $600,000 grant in the state Department of Education budget to a nonprofit established by a Greenville Democrat that provided academic assistance to underserved children, according to his veto message. He also expressed concern that the state budget process did not adequately evaluate earmarks requested by legislators for particular projects. —Staff

Charleston urges residents to focus on brain health
6
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg on Monday announced a new city initiative to get more people to focus on caring for the health of their brain as much as they might exercise their bodies. The community outreach effort organized by the City of Charleston’s Office on Aging seeks to help people focus on the four pillars of brain health, which Dr. Jacobo Mintzer, director of S.C. Institute for Brain Health, described as ensuring social engagement, boosting cognitive learning, doing physical exercise and improving nutrition. “Talk[ing] about these four pillars of brain health [means] that we can, number one, be sure we know the signs and can recognize a problem when it occurs, but secondly, know the tools that can help quality of life and even provide some remedy,” Tecklenberg said at a West Ashley forum at the Lowcountry Senior Center. “At the end of the day, we talk about quality of life — what’s more important than your health? And that includes our brain health.” Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the 2021 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures Report. Approximately 95,000 South Carolinians are currently living with the disease. Jamie Roper, coordinator of the Office on Aging, encouraged members of the community to incorporate the pillars of brain health into their everyday lives. The goal of the new initiative is to instill a dedication to brain health in Charleston and provide resources for families and individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease. “The community initiative is to have the community get active to do whatever they can do for brain health,” Roper said. “Since this is Alzheimer’s and brain health month, we want people to get engaged to look at those four pillars and say, ‘How can I change the course of my life?’ by something as simple as changing your diet, or going for a walk or learning a new dance, taking a yoga class to do stress management, to do whatever they can to promote better brain health.” The Alzheimer’s Association has a call center available for support at 1-800-2723900 and can connect families and individuals with support groups, said Sam Wiley, vice president of programs for the S.C. Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The association offers support online with education materials that distinguish warning signs to help with early detection of the onset of the disease, as well as distinguish how Alzheimer’s differs from dementia, he said. —Chelsea Grinstead

Look out for manatees in Lowcountry waters this summer and do your part to help keep them safe during their visit
Manatees are back in Charleston By Skyler Baldwin With the heat of the summer bearing down on the Lowcountry, manatees have once again begun appearing in Charleston’s waters. Here’s what you need to know. While the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates 7,520 manatees live in Florida, where water temperatures stay warm yearround, many venture north along the South Atlantic coast every spring and summer, often ending up in Charleston.
Keep manatees safe during their visit
Erin Weeks, a science writer for the Marine Division of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), has spent the last seven years sharing conservation messages and other research from the state’s waterways. I felt there could be no more meaningful work than the protection and stewardship of my home state,” Weeks said. “Like many South Carolinians — even those who grow up on the coast — I had no idea our waters were home to manatees until I first encountered one in Shem Creek many years ago,” she said in an interview. “That was an awe-inspiring feeling — and I still experience it anew every time I see them.”
“
I had no idea our waters were home to manatees until I first encountered one in Shem Creek many years ago.” —Erin Weeks
But manatees face several threats. Boat strikes top the list of causes of death in manatees in South Carolina. Weeks said boaters should be alert when on the water and learn to recognize the signs of wildlife. Not only does vigilance protect manatees, but it also safeguards sea turtles and dolphins. “All of these animals forage in small tidal creeks that don’t provide much room to dive away from a fast-moving boat, so consider boating extra carefully in such areas,” Weeks said. She offered a short list of tips and best practices to ensure manatees have a peaceful trip to the Lowcountry this summer: • Always check around your boat before starting your propeller; • Respect “No Wake Zones” and keep an
eye out near marinas; • Never give fresh water to manatees. “They love drinking fresh water, but they don’t need it to survive,” Weeks said. “‘Watering’ manatees habituates them to areas where they’re more likely to be hit by a boat.”
Don’t touch that tracker!
Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute (CMARI) in Florida uses satellite tags to track the migration of manatees and research their seasonal habits. These tags are anchored around the base of the manatee’s tail and float along the surface of the water. On occasion, you may find a tagged manatee near Charleston. “On first glance, it can look a bit like a crab pot buoy floating behind a manatee,” Weeks said. “But they’re completely safe for the animals and we ask that folks not touch or interfere with the tracker in any way.” A local man in early June told the City Paper that he spotted a manatee with a fixture matching that description while on the water. Weeks said it is possible that the manatee’s name is Knox, a familiar visitor to the area who, along with her calf, was rescued from the Cooper River last December and never migrated back to Florida on her own. abortion ban passed last year by the state legislature. McMaster’s Democratic gubernatorial opponent in the November’s general election, former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham, vowed to use his authority as governor, should he win, to ensure abortion rights remained intact in the Palmetto State. “This is a dark day in American history,” he said in a statement. “The four walls of a doctor’s office simply aren’t big enough for a woman, her partner, her doctor and the government. But the government has decided to force themselves in anyway. “Governor McMaster and radical politicians in Columbia have already pledged to ban all abortions in South Carolina with no exceptions for rape, incest or life of the mother,” he continued. “The only thing standing in the way of this draconian reality is my veto pen. As governor, I won’t hesitate to use that pen to stand up for women and their right to control their own bodies.”
What happens now in South Carolina?
With the politics of abortion being upturned, many South Carolinians are wondering what steps the state may take next. Several Republican S.C. House members, including House Speaker Murrell Smith of Sumter, former Speaker Jay Lucas of Darlington and Reps. John McCravy of Greenwood, Travis Moore of Spartanburg, Brian White of Anderson and Thomas Ligon of Chester, have already sponsored H. 5399, a bill that aims to entirely ban abortions. Though no other details on the bill have been released yet, McMaster has previously stated that he would support a bill that bans all abortions with no exceptions for situations like rape, incest or life-threatening complications for the mother. At the end of May, Smith established an ad hoc committee, chaired by McCravy, to seek public testimony on the impact an abortion ban would have on South Carolinians. The committee will flesh out details for the H. 5399 bill. The date of the public hearing has yet to be announced. It’s unclear how far state legislators will try to take abortion restriction laws in South Carolina and whether they will try to pass legislation criminalizing abortion procedures and possibly even criminalizing out-of-state travel to receive abortion care. Another bill currently in committee in the state Senate, S. 988, seeks to prohibit abortion procedures and “provide penalties for violating the prohibition,” though it’s unclear what those penalties could entail. This is a developing story. You can find out the latest at CharlestonCityPaper.com. Reporters Skyler Baldwin and Samantha Connors contributed.

Officers on a foot patrol on King Street June 4 thought they saw a man smoking a joint on the sidewalk. When they approached and asked him about it, he admitted, “Yeah, I do be smokin’.” Must have already met quota Charleston police on June 1 stopped a downtown driver for failing to use a turn signal. During the stop, police found a small amount of marijuana and a handgun. Despite the drugs, firearm and traffic violation, the driver was issued a warning. This marks the first time we’ve ever seen “hacking” as a listed offense in a police report. A travesty of justices
Supreme Court wrongly relegates women, curbs freedom
I
Views 06.29.2022
f you call a group of hyenas a clan or cackle and a bunch a crows a murder, what do you call activist right-wing members of the United States Supreme Court? A travesty of justices? The United States is supposed to be the paragon of freedom, not a country that regresses and removes freedoms. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has relegated America’s women to be second-class citizens by overturning their right to choose whether to bring a child into our increasingly vicious world, we’ve got to ask: What’s next? Will the right-wing members of the high court next decide they don’t like same-sex marriage? Affordable health care? The right to use contraception? Or how about this — laws that banned miscegenation and allowed Associate Justice Clarence Thomas to marry a white woman? What’s glaringly apparent in the Friday decision of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health to anyone with a sense of history is that the “originalist” justices on the Supreme Court are basing their fresh abortion ruling on antebellum principles of states’ rights that buttressed slavery and segregation. It was none other than South Carolina’s John C. Calhoun who pushed the nation into crisis in 1832 via the political theory of nullification that claimed states had the right to block the enforcement of a federal tariff. While the nullification crisis was resolved with a win for federalism, it became an intellectual girder in the nation’s battle over slavery for the next three decades. After the Civil War, some states then passed “Black Codes” to make second-class citizens of Black Americans. In response,
10
Congress passed the 14th Amendment, which guaranteed “equal protection of the laws” so that “a small pool of voters couldn’t strip rights from their neighbors. It is this effort [that] today’s Supreme Court is gutting,” historian Heather Cox Richardson wrote last week. Friday’s ruling triggered 11 states with pre-passed legislation to ban abortions completely or heavily restrict them. In South Carolina, a six-week ban that passed last year if Roe were overturned is expected to take effect soon. And the state legislature is considering a measure that would ban abortions outright — without exemptions for rape or incest or to protect the life of the mother. More than 60% of Americans support legal abortion, according to polling by the Pew Research Center. In South Carolina, a 2019 Winthrop University poll showed, “significant majorities still want legal abortions for those whose health is threatened, are carrying a non-viable fetus or are pregnant as the result of rape or incest. This data shows that South Carolinians are not fans of abortion, but recognize certain circumstances when legal abortion may be appropriate.” South Carolina’s General Assembly needs to slow down before passing any abortion ban. Kneejerk reactions are never smart in any political debate. South Carolina’s women, long underpaid and underappreciated, deserve more than being treated as second-class citizens. Don’t fall for the political bait, legislators. Listen to what all of your constituents — not just the screamers — say before condemning some pregnant women to backroom pain and even death.

OPINION
It’s time to think deeply about our democracy By Andy Brack For a retired federal appellate judge who has been a conservative darling of the Republican establishment to say that America’s democracy is on a “knife’s edge” is about as chilling as it gets. Judge J. Michael Luttig, an adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence and three GOP administrations, recently offered a blistering condemnation of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol to the U.S. House select committee investigating the violence and events that led to it. That day, he testified, was part of a long “war on democracy.” He castigated former President Donald Trump as “a clear and present danger” to our nation’s governance. But what was remarkable in Luttig’s courageous break from today’s GOP party of Trump puppets was how he implored Americans to really think about what they want from a democracy built on freedom for all, not just a few: “America is at a perilous crossroads. Who is it that we have become and what is it that America has become? Is this who we want to be and what we want America to be? And if not, just who is it that we Americans want to be? And just what is it that we want our America to be?” He’s right. Everyone, not just those in power, really needs to think about America’s famous experiment in democracy. And if we don’t like what we see, we need to do something about it. So we offer two indices to guide your
thoughts, a Freedom Index and an Anti-Freedom Index: FREEDOM INDEX (check all boxes that apply) I believe in: [] Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness [] The U.S. Constitution and its amendments, including: [] Freedom of speech [] Freedom of the press [] The right to assemble peaceably [] The right to petition the government for grievances [] The right to bear arms — for a well-regulated (not individual) militia [] Open, transparent government [] Fairness and equal treatment under the law [] Truth, justice and civil debate to resolve issues [] A government of laws, not men [] Fair elections that promote voting by all [] Robust public education [] Assistive safety nets, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid [] Regulated markets that inspire competition and innovation [] Protection for the powerless from discrimination
[] Someone else thinking for me [] Closed-mindedness [] Rewriting the U.S. Constitution to favor some Americans, not all [] Diluting the power of courts to redress grievances [] A government of men, not laws [] Unregulated markets [] Conspicuous consumption [] No or few consequences for lying, cheating, stealing, greed or sedition [] Self-reliance [] Violence as a means to an end [] Preferential treatment and favoritism [] Gerrymandered elections and hurdles to voting [] No public education system [] No social safety nets [] No protection from discrimination Both lists have 16 boxes. If you have a bunch of boxes checked on the second list and few on the first, you might want to question whether you really belong in the United States and share values with generations of Americans who have given their lives for our freedoms.
ANTI-FREEDOM INDEX (check all boxes that apply) I believe in: [] Governance that condones secrecy and authoritarianism

A City Paper guide to Lowcountry beach safety By Chris Dixon
t was the summer of my 19th year, and I was out surfing at Garden City Beach. A tropical storm spawned 6-foot waves and pink tourists frolicked like a scene from Jaws. Thanks to a drillsergeant instructor, I had just earned my ocean lifesaving certification. I was feeling pretty good. Paddling back out after a drubbing, I noticed a kid about 15 yards away. His head bobbed in 4 feet of water and everything looked fine. The water was rough, but others were swimming by him right in front of the lifeguard. His hands broke the surface in a dog paddle. Still, his clumsy movements brought out my instructor’s words: “Drowning people don’t look like drowning people,” he said. “Even if their eyes and nose are above water, their mouths are submerged. They can’t scream and they’re too busy struggling, or too tired to wave.” Suddenly, the kid went under. I sprinted over, yelling to a swimming couple: “There was a kid — right here!” He was their son. He had been drowning, but they didn’t even know it. After an interminable 10 seconds scratching the foam, the kid bounced into me — face down, arms akimbo, skin purple. I yanked him up and laid him over the top of my board. He retched seawater and wailed like any kid who almost died would. Today, I still wonder what would have happened had I not been told what to look for. Partly because of that incident, I launched a book project a few years ago — The Ocean. The Ultimate Handbook of Nautical Knowledge — that sought the life-saving wisdom of scores of ocean experts. What follows is an abbreviated Lowcountry-
Rūta Smith file photo
centered beach safety breakdown that we hope will keep you safe.
How to surf safely
Surfing has exploded in Charleston. For beginners, a little local advice: Surfing has many unwritten rules. Lessen the odds of injury or confrontation with a surf lesson. Shaka Surf School, Sol Surfers, Isla Surf School, Carolina Salt and Salt Marsh Surf School are all reputable local operations. Big board. Get a long (8-foot or more), soft surfboard like a Costco Wavestorm or a SoftTop that won’t knock you out when it inevitably hits you in the head. You can also rent soft surfboards from several local shops including Ocean and McKevlin’s on Folly Beach. Go where people aren’t. You generally can’t surf at the lifeguarded beaches near piers and at our county parks when the guards are out. There’s still plenty of room. At Folly, the waves are far less crowded between the 4th Block West End and Folly Beach County Park. At Isle of Palms, the blocks between 20th and 30th north of the pier tend to be the most crowded. Stay out of the way. For beginners, the best way to get yelled at or punched is to “drop in” on another surfer. The most important rule is that the surfer closest to the breaking whitewater (also known as the curl) moving down the line has the right-of-way. This means you should always

Don’t “drop-in” on a surfer who is already riding the wave
Avoid bad currents
In the Lowcountry, we generally see two types of beach currents. Longshore currents run parallel to the beach. They’re caused by tidal flows or strong winds blowing sideways up or down the beach. Rip currents are created either by longshore currents pushing up against piers and jetties or by wave energy. Rips are likely to be much stronger right alongside piers or jetties. In wave-spawned rips, water is pushed ashore by waves then funneled back out to sea. Look for a stream of choppy, more turbid water. • If you’re pushed out in a rip, relax, flip on your back face up and float or swim to ride the current out while swimming parallel to shore. Angle for the beach when it’s safe — anywhere safe will do. Rips cannot exist everywhere. Eventually the current will release its grip and you can swim in. • If you’re amidst waves, dive beneath them and swim, riding the current until outside of breakers, then rest and regroup and swim in, or float outside and wave for help.
Don’t swim alongside tidal channels
The calm-looking waters at the ends of our barrier island beaches can look inviting. But these are the spots where tidal currents can be far stronger than you can swim. Avoid them.
Prevent burned feet — and paws
Summertime sand or pavement can be over 120 F. Paws or feet can be seriously burned when ground temperature exceeds 111 F. If you reach the beach early, the sand will be much hotter when you leave. Bring flip flops. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18
How to deal with jellyfish and stingrays Venomous jellyfish and tiny immature jellies, aka “sea lice,” stings are the most common Lowcountry beach injuries. Many popularized “traditional” remedies can actually worsen stings.
Avoid jellyfish
The first rule of dealing with stings is to avoid jellyfish. Lowcountry jellyfish stings start to ramp up in July. Strong, southerly winds can also blow Portuguese man-o’-wars ashore. In late summer, we even see small box jellyfish (Chiropsalmus quadrumanus) aka sea wasps. Though not as bad as Australian boxes, they’re still terrible. Big, round cannonball jellies are everywhere, but they’re generally harmless.
Prevent stings
Stingers are triggered by skin contact. Wearing thin fabrics dramatically reduces risks. Think form-fitting wetsuits and Lycra clothing like rash guards and “swim yoga” pants.
How to NOT treat stings
There are a host of old wives’ tales about how to treat stings that are just plain wrong. Therefore: • Never wash off attached stingers using cool/cold water (fresh or salt), urine, alcohol, ammonia or bleach. • Never treat stings with meat tenderizer, shaving cream, baking soda or any other folk remedy. Some actually increase stinger discharge. • Never rub, towel, scrape or swipe tentacles to remove them. Any pressure can further inject poison into the skin. • Never apply cold packs, cold freshwater or ice. • Never, ever use an EpiPen, or epinephrine. A jellyfish sting is not an allergy, and epinephrine could prove fatal. • DO NOT rinse with cool or cold saltwater: This rolls inactive stingers across the skin so they sting again and again.
How TO treat stings
• Remain calm and get out of the water. • Wash the sting site with vinegar to remove any remaining stingers (take a bottle to the beach). Typically, less than 1% discharge on initial contact. Flood the area with vinegar for at least 30 seconds to “acid-fix” the stinging cells and deactivate unfired stingers. StingNoMore was developed for U.S. combat divers and has vinegar (and other components) to fully inactivate stingers. It really works. • If you don’t have vinegar or if the sting is in the eye, flood the site with tolerably hot freshwater — washing off the remaining stingers. If any tentacles
won’t rinse off, soak in hot freshwater or pluck them off gently with tweezers, though this will cause more stinging. Wear gloves if possible. • Once stingers are removed, soak the area in tolerably hot freshwater, ideally 110 F to 115 F, or use hot packs, for 20-45 minutes to deactivate the injected venom. Hot, not scorching beach sand can also help, but only after stingers are removed or deactivated. • Afterward, use antihistamine and anti-inflammatory creams such as hydrocortisone to lessen inflammation. • With box jelly stings, victims may need assistance and CPR. Summon a lifeguard and call 911. • If the victim is unconscious or has labored breathing or heart arrhythmia, begin CPR. The cardiac effects of venom diminish over time, and lives have been saved after even 40 minutes of CPR.

Treating a stingray sting
Stingrays bury themselves in the sand and can whip a venom-coated spine on their tails with lightning speed. It’s outrageously painful. Shuffle your feet through the sand to scare them off (this doesn’t always work). • Soak sting site in hot soapy water (114 F) for 10-15 minutes, which deactivates toxic proteins. On a hot beach, use hot (but not scorching) sand. • Clean the wound with soap and warm water, then irrigate with freshwater or a sterile saline solution, not seawater. • Elevate the injury above the level of the heart to prevent swelling and reduce pain. • Apply an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin and cover gently with a clean gauze dressing. Seek medical attention. —Chris Dixon

If you accidentally interfere with a surfer’s ride (known as a “dropin,” “burn” or “snake”), do your best to get out of their way. If that’s impossible and you stuff them back in the whitewater, make sure to apologize.

Catch the Breeze
Save a drowning victim Drowning swimmers do not flail around, screaming. They’re often so exhausted that they’re partially submerged. In fact, someone might drown right in front of you if you don’t know the signs: • Head low in the water, mouth at water level • Head tilted back with mouth open, like they’re staring at the sky • Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus, or closed • Hair over forehead or eyes • Upright in the water, with no evidence of kicking • Hyperventilating or gasping • Trying to swim in a particular direction but making no headway • Trying to roll over on their back • Moving as if climbing an invisible ladder
Rescuing a drowning swimmer
Anyone who has nearly drowned needs medical treatment. Desperate for breath, panicked swimmers may climb on top of you. Bring a flotation device if possible.

If you don’t have a flotation device: • Swim beneath the victim and approach from behind. Keep their back to you. Say, “I’m here to help, but you have to relax.” If the victim grabs you, dive and swim away. The victim will likely let go. If he or she doesn’t, push their arms off by the elbows and keep sinking. Catch your breath. Try again. • Once you are behind the victim, throw your nondominant arm over the victim’s shoulder and chest. Grab the armpit and slide the crook of your elbow under the victim’s chin to stabilize and get the head out of the water. If the victim is thrashing, grab the wrist of the free arm with your dominant arm. A hard, painful squeeze of the armpit and wrist — and a calm and reassuring voice — usually helps victims relax.
If you have a surfboard or flotation device: • Place the floating object between yourself and the victim; extend it to him or her and continually offer reassurance. • In a wave zone, fasten the ankle or wrist leash onto the victim. • Unless there’s immediate danger, allow the victim to rest on the flotation device before making for shore.
Rescuing an unconscious swimmer
Drowning CPR is different from heart attack CPR. In a drowning, the person is often unconscious, not necessarily because the heart has stopped, but from lack of oxygen. • Give five breaths. If the victim is not breathing, and you’re in a safe spot — even in the water — get air into their lungs as soon as possible. With one hand, pinch the victim’s nostrils closed and give five long, steady breaths. Watch for the rise and fall of the chest. Five breaths could take up to a minute. Administer breaths even if you see blood or foaming at the mouth. • Drag from surf. Upon reaching the beach, hold the victim from behind, placing both arms under the victim’s armpits, while one arm supports their chin and spine. Walk backward, dragging the victim away from the surf. Presume any limp victim, particularly someone who’s had a wipeout, also has a spinal-cord injury. Keep their neck in a neutral, aligned position. • Lay the victim on his or her back. If the victim vomits, be sure to roll him or her on a side. This is vital to keep fluid out of the lungs. Water pouring from a victim’s mouth is most likely from the stomach, not the lungs. Never try the Heimlich maneuver or attempt to drain water from the victim’s lungs. This will actually introduce water into the lungs. • Begin CPR with five rescue breaths on land. Immediately assess the victim’s pulse and breathing afterward. Then begin chest compressions. Stay at it until breathing and heartbeat return or rescuers arrive. • Keep the victim warm and dry. If the victim is vomiting, making gurgling sounds or exhibiting blue lips and fingers, he or she probably inhaled seawater and may experience “secondary drowning.” Victims exhibit minimal symptoms at first — a cough and a little foam — but can suffocate as their lungs slowly fill with fluid. —Chris Dixon

Lightning can strike miles ahead of a Lowcountry thunderstorm. Summer storms can advance at more than 50 mph, and saltwater conducts electricity well. If you hear thunder, get out of the ocean and off the beach. A car is very safe during a storm. NOTE: Because of how lightning can travel from a structure into the ground, standing under a pier or at the edge of a porch or overhang, is a bad idea.

From oysters to broken glass to surfboard fins, our beaches can be sharp. If a cut is severe or spurting, call 911. After stopping bleeding, any cut must be cleaned thoroughly. Stop the bleeding: Most bleeding can be controlled with direct pressure. Apply solid pressure over the length of the cut. If a wound is spurting blood at the same rate as a heartbeat, this indicates a severed artery, and steady compression is critical. You must exceed the internal pressure with external pressure. Hold clean fabric — or whatever you have, like a towel or T-shirt — while applying non-

stop direct pressure for as long as it takes to stop bleeding. If pressure fails to stop the bleeding or it’s spurting badly, you must apply a tourniquet. Apply a tourniquet: A tourniquet cuts off blood circulation to a limb, and once applied, it MUST remain in place until the victim reaches a medical facility. The most effective is a combat application tourniquet (CAT). To improvise one, wrap a long strip of cloth at least a half inch wide (not shoe string or wire) one or more times above but not over the wound (ideally, above elbow or knee). Wrap over clothing to protect skin. Tie a half knot, place a rigid stick on the knot, then tie another knot to bind the stick. Twist the stick until bleeding stops, then immobilize the stick so it doesn’t loosen.

Redux Contemporary Art Center is holding true to its mission of cultivating diverse contemporary art with its new residency program, The Lightning Residency. On view now through July 15, is Intangibles, a two-person exhibition of the program’s first residents, Adrian Lopez Rivera and Landon Carter. Highlights of the exhibition include emotionally driven multimedia works by Carter, existing in the space between painting and sculpture, and an impactful, multifigural triptych by Rivera, which sparks conversation about housing and inequality in the Holy City. The Lightning Residency at Redux on upper King Street is a fast-paced, six-week residency program that creates opportunities for emerging artists by providing access to studio space and an opportunity to showcase their work at no cost. During the residency, artists work diligently on a comprehensive project which is installed in the back gallery of Redux when the residency ends. The largest piece in the show is Rivera’s “Holy City Trinity,” a triptych composed of three large canvases, complete with a red line drawing that continues onto the wall behind the oil paintings. Characteristic of Rivera’s work, the multifigural triptych interweaves complex narratives. Rivera explained that, even though he is not related to the Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera, he takes inspiration from the iconic artist in terms of content. “I am a big fan of the works of Diego Rivera. I admire that a lot of his work was focused on the people, on all people,” Rivera said. “The murals he painted in Mexico City were big influences on my composition for the tryptic. He understood how to put figures together to tell you a socio-political story. “The main theme of the triptych is housing,” Rivera added. “The three panels represent three different living conditions. The city has been amongst the highest in terms of gentrification for some time and this is really visible. You can see new develop-
ments turning into ‘luxury’ apartments with a townhouse next door that is falling apart.” The middle panel is based loosely on the artist’s apartment complex. We peek into a window where many people sit packed in a crowded space. Some figures fall out of the space, while others try to climb in. “There is a history anywhere you go, and sometimes tourism overtakes telling the whole truth. Charleston is so much more than just Rainbow Row and horse-drawn carriages, and it feels insensitive to paint this city as just that. There is history here which still affects the everyday lives of disenfranchised communities … The city is full of contrast.” Rivera confronts his viewer with what is hidden beneath the surface. Viewers of this artwork may find themselves wondering: Who does work in Charleston to support our constant expansion and gentrification? Who gets to enjoy the fruits of their labor? “Holy City Trinity” is shown alongside Carter’s “If I Am Lost It’s Only For a Little While.” Carter has developed a technique of layering paints and resin to create surrealist works that exist in the space between painting and sculpture. “One thing that Landon and I talked about during our shared time at Redux was self-expression,” Rivera said. “We both made art that was highly personal.” Carter sees his mission as an artist to connect people and show that we are not alone in our emotions. “To create extremely vulnerable work, like I did for this show at Redux, and have people visibly connect with it is just so fulfilling,” he said. “It was my first public showing in Charleston. Seeing people take pictures of my work and being excited to see it … that never gets old.” “This is by far the most emotional piece of art I have ever made,” Carter explained.
Courtesy Redux Contemporary Art Center
Adrian Rivera’s “Holy City Trinity” is the largest piece in the collection “I sketched out the idea for this in March of last year on a trip to Brevard, North Carolina, where I was thinking a lot about the past several years.” When Carter dropped out of The Citadel during his senior year, it caused division between him and his community. He picked up a job dishwashing, though he was still dissatisfied with his surroundings. “The only thing that got me through each shift was imagining different places I would rather be. Creating imaginary landscapes from my memories in my head where things were better helped me realize that a place like that was possible … and that I could ask for help.” The painting depicts two dishwashing hands, with one protruding out of a mountain range. Carter sees the work as a love letter to artmaking, self-preservation and change. “Thinking back on these memories through making this work, it really helps to put in perspective how much I have done for myself, and how much other people have done for me as well. This painting encompasses what got me through some of the hardest times in my life,” he said. Carter hopes that viewers of “If I Am Lost, It’s Only For a Little While,” may connect to the emotionality of his artmaking practice. Intangibles closes July 15. Carter and Rivera will participate in artist talks at Redux in the coming weeks.

Hurricane season is officially here, and you can find everything you need to know on a beer can, thanks to Tradesman Brewing Co. and Lowe’s Foods. In partnership with Dorchester County Emergency Management Department (EMD), Tradesman Brewing recently launched its Know Your Zone lager, exclusively available at Lowe’s Foods in Summerville, West Ashley and Mount Pleasant. Plans to expand to other Lowe’s locations across the state are in the works. Sara Gayle McConnell, owner, bean counter and head minion of Tradesman Brewing was approached April 13 with a simple question from David Amann from the Dorchester County EMD: “Wouldn’t it be cool if we just had a hurricane beer?” The EMD held its annual hurricane preparedness and public outreach meeting in mid-April to talk about ways to educate others and spread awareness. During a topic of new and unique ways to “send out the same old message each year,” Amann threw out an offhanded idea to the staff, thinking it wasn’t going to amount to much. “I just randomly thought, ‘As an adult, what would actually get me to potentially look at something?’ And then I was like,

Would it be legally allowed to partner with a brewery or something?’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, why not?’” After contacting the EMD’s public information officer and legal team, the ball started rolling. Amann reached out to a friend who worked at Frothy Beard’s Off-World Summerville location, who put him in touch with the manager. They loved the idea, according to Amann, but were unable to help brew enough beer in time for the Hurricane Expo on June 1 due to tank space. That was when McConnell was added to

the email chain. “Sara sent me this pretty nice email saying that she was super onboard,” Amann said. “And she wanted to schedule a meeting right away. So she just basically jumped right in the pool with me super quick and that’s when it kind of took off way faster than I expected it to.” Amann’s initial plan was to create a hurricane beer, sell it for the season (June 1-Nov. 30) and call it a day, according to McConnell. However, after some more thought and discussion, the teams from Tradesman Brewing and the EMD crafted the idea of making the can more than just a beer, but a starting point for education. The team at the EMD was also along for the ride during the whole process — from brewing to label design to canning. It was a collaborative effort from both teams to put out a beer that not only tastes good, but provides useful information for the hurricane season and beyond. “Obviously they own the beer, but it truly has been a partnership,” Amann said. The final product of Know Your Zone features a QR code that leads directly to hurricane.sc, an online hurricane guide to help build a plan, know where to evacuate and how to connect with support during a hurricane. According to McConnell, because of the exclusivity Tradesman has with Lowe’s, the Know Your Zone can will be featured on an endcap, placed alongside other hurricane essentials. “Scan the code, see what goes in the kit and purchase it right there next to the beer.” On the backend, McConnell added that the QR codes are also an opportunity for the EMD and Tradesman to learn. The teams can track the number of clicks on the QR code, allowing them to see if the number of scans increase during a named storm, for example. As for the style of beer, McConnell wanted to work with Amann and his team to make something special for the seasonal brew. “I think because it’s hurricane season, and in summer, we were looking for a light, easy drinking style of beer,” McConnell said. “And so a lager is typically what people think of, but a lager traditionally takes three weeks to a month and a half.” Though a traditional summer lager wasn’t quite in the cards for Know Your Zone, McConnell had another idea: “How do we move beer through your tanks faster?” she added. “A California Cooler is the way to do that. It’s a lager that’s brewed at ale temperatures, so it means 10 days to two weeks for fermentation. And we put a little bit of lemon on the backend just to give it a crispness.” “Sara was the perfect person to get the idea,” Amann said. “She has just been amazing to work with.” “It’s about education,” McConnell said. “It’s not about the business. It’s about what we’re doing for the community. To keep them safe.”

Free Will Astrology ARIES (March 21-April 19): In her poem “Two Skins,” Bahamanian writer Lynn Sweeting writes, “There is a moment in every snake’s life when she wears two skins: one you can see, about to be shed, one you cannot see, the skin under the skin, waiting.” I suspect you now have metaphorical resemblances to a snake on the verge of molting, Aries. Congratulations on your imminent rebirth! Here’s a tip: The snake’s old skin doesn’t always just fall away; she may need to take aggressive action to tear it open and strip it off, like by rubbing her head against a rock. Be ready to perform a comparable task. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Imagine a world 300 years from now,” writes Japanese novelist Minae Mizumura, “a world in which not only the best-educated people but also the brightest minds and the deepest souls express themselves only in English. Imagine the world subjected to the tyranny of a singular ‘Logos.’ What a narrow, pitiful, and horrid world that would be!” Even though I am primarily an English speaker, I agree with her. I don’t want a world purged of diversity. Don’t want a monolithic culture. Don’t want everyone to think and speak the same. I hope you share my passion for multiplicity, Taurus — especially these days. In my astrological opinion, you’ll thrive if you immerse yourself in a celebratory riot of variety. I hope you will seek out influences you’re not usually exposed to. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Imagine you’re not a person, but a medley of four magical ingredients. What would they be? A Gemini baker named Jasmine says, “ripe persimmons, green hills after a rain, a sparkling new Viking Black Glass Oven, and a prize-winning show horse.” A Gemini social worker named Amarantha says she would be made of “Florence and the Machine’s song ‘Sky Full of Song,’ a grove of birch trees, a blue cashmere kneelength sweater, and three black cats sleeping in the

sun.” A Gemini delivery driver named Altoona says, “freshly harvested cannabis buds, a bird-loving wetlands at twilight, Rebecca Solnit’s book Hope in the Darkness, and the Haleakal shield volcano in Maui.” And now, Gemini, what about you? Identify your medley of four magical ingredients. The time is right to re-imagine the poetry of YOU. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard believes there’s only one way to find a sense of meaning, and that is to fill your life to the bursting point; to be in love with your experience; to celebrate the flow of events wherever it takes you. When you do that, Godard says, you have no need or urge to ask questions like “Why am I here?” or “What is my purpose?” The richness of your story is the ultimate response to every enigma. As I contemplate these ideas, I say: wow! That’s an intensely vibrant way to live. Personally, I’m not able to sustain it all the time. But I think most of us would benefit from such an approach for brief periods now and then. And I believe you have just entered one of those phases. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I asked Leo readers to provide their insights about the topic “How to Be a Leo.” Here are responses that line up with your current astrological omens. 1. People should try to understand you’re only bossing them around for their benefit. —Harlow Hunt. 2. Be alert for the intense shadows you may cast with your intense brightness. Consider the possibility that even if they seem iffy or dicey, they have value and even blessings to offer. —Cannarius Kansen. 3. Never break your own heart. Never apologize for showering yourself with kindness and adoration. —Amy Clear. 4. At the moment of orgasm, scream out your own name. —Bethany Grace VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s your birthright as a Virgo to become a master of capitalizing on difficulties. You have great potential to detect opportunities coalescing in the midst of trouble. You can
develop a knack for spotting the order that’s hiding in the chaos. Now is a time when you should wield these skills with artistry, my dear — both for your own benefit and for the betterment of everyone whose lives you touch. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): One of my heroes died in 2021: the magnificent Libran author bell hooks (who didn’t capitalize her name). She was the most imaginative and independent-minded activist I knew. Till her last day, she articulated one-of-akind truths about social justice; she maintained her uncompromising originality. But it wasn’t easy. She wrote, “No insurgent intellectual, no dissenting critical voice in this society escapes the pressure to conform. We are all vulnerable. We can all be had, co-opted, bought. There is no special grace that rescues any of us. There is only a constant struggle.” I bring this to your attention, Libra, because I suspect the coming weeks will require your strenuous efforts to remain true to your high standards and unique vision of reality. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You now have the power to make yourself even more beautiful than you already are. You are extraordinarily open to beautifying influences, and there will be an abundance of beautifying influences coming your way. I trust you understand I’m not referring to the kinds of beauty that are worshiped by conventional wisdom. Rather, I mean the elegance, allure, charm and grace that you behold in old trees and gorgeous architecture and enchanting music and people with soulful idiosyncrasies. PS: The coming weeks will also be a favorable time to redefine the meaning of beauty for yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): It’s the Season for Expressing Your Love—and for expanding and deepening the ways you express your love. I invite you to speak the following quotes to the right person: 1. “Your head is a living forest full of songbirds.” —E. E. Cummings. 2. “Lovers continuously reach each other’s boundaries.” —Rainer Maria Rilke, 3. “You’re my favorite unfolding story.” — Ann Patchett. 4. “My lifetime listens to yours.” — Muriel Rukeyser.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In the coming weeks, make sure you do NOT fit this description articulated by Capricorn novelist Haruki Murakami: “You’re seeking something, but at the same time, you are running away for all you’re worth.” If there is any goal about which you feel conflicted like that, dear Capricorn, now is a good time to clear away your confusion. If you are in some sense undercutting yourself, perhaps unconsciously, now is the time to expose your inner saboteur and seek the necessary healing. July will be Self-Unification Month. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A Tweeter named Luxuryblkwomen articulates one of her ongoing goals: “bridging the gap between me and my ideal self, one day at a time.” I’d love it if you would adopt a similar aspiration in the coming months. You’re going to be exceptionally skilled at all types of bridge-building, including the kind that connects you to the hero you’ll be in the future. I mean, you are already a hero in my eyes, but I know you will ultimately become an even more fulfilled and refined version of your best self. Now is a favorable time to do the holy work of forging stronger links to that star-to-be. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A blogger named Lissar suggests that the cherry blossom is an apt symbol for you Pisceans. She describes you as “transient, lissome, blooming, lovely, fragile yet memorable and recurring, in tune with nature.” Lissar says you “mystify yet charm,” and that your “presence is a balm, yet awe-inspiring and moving.” Of course, like all of us, you also have your share of less graceful qualities. And that’s not a bad thing! We’re all here to learn the art of growing into our ripe selves. It’s part of the fun of being alive. But I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will be an extra close match for Lissar’s description. You are at the peak of your power to delight and beguile us.

Pulse Talking Heads tribute show lands at Pour House
Umphrey’s McGee’s new album Asking for a Friend drops July 1 and the band is gearing up to play Resonance Music and Arts Festival at Woodlands Nature Reserve
It simply sounds like Umphrey’s: Ryan Stasik on the band’s new LP By Kevin Murphy Wilson Like a lot of other Gen Xers, Ryan Stasik settled on a career path while in college. But, as Stasik told the City Paper, it wasn’t the classes or professors at Notre Dame University that inspired him so much as the music-minded people he was hanging around on campus. These alternative characters included Brendan Bayliss (guitar/ vocals) and Joel Cummins (keyboard/ vocals) who, with Stasik (bass), comprised the core of the group that came to be known as Umphrey’s McGee. That was nearly a quarter century ago. Since then there have been substantial changes to the lineup: Jake Cinninger (guitar/vocals), Andy Farag (percussion) and Kris Meyers (drums/vocals). Together, this experimental collective has been working relentlessly, all the while cementing a reputation as one of the wackiest jam bands in the land, dabbling at times in folk, rock, funk, jazz, blues, reggae, electronic, metal and more. Interestingly, as the act gradually expanded out of its original Midwestern headquarters, Stasik, along with band manager (and fellow Notre Dame alum) Vince Iwinski, would come to call Charleston home. For his part, Iwinski has immersed himself in teaching, as part of College of Charleston’s Arts Management program, and he has also become a significant player
as far as producing and promoting major events at local venues. Stasik, meanwhile, has deftly inserted himself into the Lowcountry music scene during his time-off from Umphrey’s McGee’s various endeavors. That said, Stasik is clear that his primary focus remains on his day job, and, at the moment, business is better than ever. Although Umphrey’s McGee is best known as a live act, and for sharing the stage with everyone from Huey Lewis to Billy Strings, this eclectic ensemble has also been rather prolific in the studio over the years. In fact, according to Stasik, getting sidelined by the pandemic only seems to have intensified the band’s passion for songcraft. The first fruits of this Covid-fueled creative blast came out last year as Umphrey’s McGee dropped an ambitious instrumental LP, with a seriously outrageous title, You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall And Left A Raging Bull. Stasik said that once the matter of naming that project was finalized by him and his colleagues, the band members were adamant that it “not be altered by management or abbreviated by the press in any way.” Next up, he said, is a more straightforward collection of tunes that is slated to come out this week, called, Asking For A Friend. This expansive batch of tracks showcases, on the one hand, the next highly-nuanced step for an ever-evolving band. But on the other hand, “It simply
sounds like Umphrey’s,” as Stasik put it. “All six of us are extremely proud,” Stasik said. “We’ve been eager to get it to new listeners and loyal fans because we genuinely feel like this record is our strongest work to date, particularly in regards to Bayliss’ lyrics. You know, we ended up with 14 songs, and somebody, hoping to make cuts, sent out an email that said ‘pick your least favorite three songs,’ and everybody picked a different three. I think that’s a good thing because we all liked almost all of them so much. And, really, why cut anything? I’m kind of excited that we’re releasing a lot of music this time.” In the end, as far as career choices go, Stasik seems pretty pleased with the road he has traveled. “Happiness and sanity is what success looks like for me. I’m lucky to be part of such a unique band that never plays the same song the same way twice. We challenge each other to reach new heights of improvisation on a daily basis. Perpetually striving to maintain that level of musicianship is what keeps me sane. Getting to do what I love for a living, while also having lots of time free to be with my wife (designer Mary Welch Fox Stasik) and children, is what keeps me happy.” Asking For A Friend will be available worldwide on July 1 and Umphrey’s McGee will perform in Charleston at the 2022 Resonance Music and Arts Festival Sept. 15-17 at the Woodlands Nature Reserve.

Tamaskin’s music tells stories across genres For Charleston-raised musician Jeremy Hobbs, aka Tamaskin, inspiration comes from life experience. “I do my best when I’m creating music to either tell my story, or tell the stories of [other] people,” he said. “I like to be a vessel.” Tamaskin was discovered in 2016 as a student at the College of Charleston, when he released a mixtape on Soundcloud that melded elements of R&B, hip-hop and rock. It attracted the attention of a record executive who invited him to come out to Los Angeles via Instagram. “Monday through Thursday, I would be in class, and on Friday they would let me take my work with me to L.A., and I would be doing my work on the plane,” Tamaskin explained. During his time on the West Coast, he acquired the name “Tamaskin.” It refers to his spirit animal, the wolf, and was bestowed upon him by a shaman when he visited a Navajo Nation reservation with Native American friends. “When I started putting out music, that’s the name that stuck with me,” he said. In 2018, Tamaskin graduated, retired his position as lead singer of his college rock band, Tamaksin and the Wolf Pack, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career full-time. Just before the pandemic, he wrapped up his first-ever tour. His latest EP, Phantom of the Hills, was released in April but saw its beginnings in 2021, when Tamaksin achieved a major life goal: purchasing a home in Beverly Hills. “I dreamt of one day being able to own a home in Beverly Hills and I was able to do that,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful and wanted to be able to share that with the world.” The five-song project defies easy genre categorization. Layered bedroom pop drifts alongside ribbons of smooth R&B, all grounded by a steady beat.

Tamaskin released dreamy pop EP Phantom of the Hills paired with a video project that captures life in Beverly Hills as it was at the time he created the songs “I like to describe music as feeling,” Tamaskin said. “I make night-driving music.” He crafted every aspect of the EP on his own, playing each sound as well as handling the engineering and production. He also paired Phantom of the Hills with a video project that captures life in Beverly Hills as it was at the time he created the songs. Phantom of the Hills evokes a dreamy, ’80s-inspired mood, but with newer releases, the artist is looking to revisit his hip-hop sound. “What I want to do now is really find a balance between [the two sounds.]” In addition to releasing singles, Tamaskin hopes to return to Charleston at some point this year to give back to the community. “There are a lot of really talented and incredible artists throughout the Charleston area,” he said. “I want to be able to build a platform for them.” —Kate Bryan
