President Biden Monday signed a major bipartisan gun safety measure that is soothing the soul of Charleston, which is still healing seven years after nine people died in a horrific shooting at Emanuel AME Church. It was a hate crime that left the nation reeling.

The Rev. Kylon Middleton, a member of county council who was a close friend of one of those murdered, said many in Charleston were exhaling in thanksgiving for the bill Middleton signed into law by Biden. It is considered the most significant gun safety law in the three decades since he negotiated a 10-year assault weapons ban in 1994 as a U.S. senator.

“This monumental bill becomes a balm to the wounded souls left in the wake [of the] massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church,” Middleton said. “This new legislation would help save lives and honors the lives of the nine who were lost on June 17, 2015 in a Bible study.

“This is God’s ‘Amazing Grace’ in action,” said Middleton, referencing the hymn sung by former President Barack Obama during

a 2015 funeral seen around the world after the Charleston shooting.

Charleston resident Polly Sheppard survived the June 2015 massacre at the historic AME church. Dylann Roof, the man convicted of killing Middleton’s friend, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, and eight others, has been sentenced to death. When Roof saw Sheppard was still alive on that evening seven years ago, he told her he’d spare her life so she could tell the story of what he had done.

“Their lives were meaningful and they have left family members who will grieve for the rest of their lives,” Risher said. Earlier in the telephone interview, she added, “I pray it doesn’t take another 30 years for important common-sense gun laws to be passed.” Her new target: Closing the so-called Charleston loophole. Doing so would expand the time officials have to do background checks of people who want guns.

On Monday in an interview, Sheppard said the new gun law was a start and “will work, but I don’t think it will go far enough. The young man who killed those seven people in [Highland Park, Ill.] was mentally ill. But mental illness has been here all the time. Now we have these [assault] weapons on the streets,” adding she thought they should be banned.

Charlotte resident Sharon Risher, who grew up in Charleston’s East Side, was at today’s bill-signing ceremony in Washington, D.C. She lost her mother, Ethel Lance, and cousins, Susie Jackson and Tywanza Sanders, in the Emanuel AME violence.

As she discussed being proud to represent those killed in Charleston, she briefly broke down, saying, “I want my mama and the other eight people who have died.”

The new law also mandates due process procedures in states that have so-called “red flag” laws, which allow officials to get guns out of the hands of people who officials believe should not have them.

“This legislation is real progress but more has to be done,” the president said. “The provision of this new legislation is going to save lives and it’s proof that today’s politics we can come together on a bipartisan basis and get important things done. Even on an issue as tough as guns.”

Stress is increasingly a strain on life in America, but Charleston is among the least stressed of U.S. cities, according to a new study of 182 communities across 40 key metrics.

In a WalletHub study in which the top spot represents the most stressed city, Charleston Charleston ranks 153rd of the 182 cities ranked. That makes Charleston the nation’s 29th least stressed city overall.

Compared to other cities, Charleston ranked higher in stress related to work (100 out of 182) and for health/safety issues (108). But it had among the nation’s lowest stress-related scores related to finances (161) and family matters (162).

Nationally, about 80% of Americans say they feel stressed about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and about 87% of Americans currently feel stressed about inflation, according to a recent Harris Poll in a report from the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA’s Stress in America survey, conducted in February, measured perceptions of stress to identify leading sources and impacts of stress.

Civil War reenactors returning to remember Morris Island battle Civil War reenactors will return to Morris Island on July 18 to remember the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment’s three-month assault on Fort Wagner that proved 159 years ago Black men had the courage to fight against slavery.

The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company I, a Civil War reenactment group in Charleston, will hold a memorial ceremony from 3-5 p.m. on the island, just south of Fort Sumter at the entrance to Charleston harbor. A boat will depart the Charleston Maritime Center at 2:30 p.m. The cost to attend the event as a spectator is $30 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the dock. The boat can carry 49 people.

Before being mustered out of the military in 1865, the men of the 54th also fought in the Sol Legare area of James Island and the Battle of Honey Hill in Jasper County. The 54th is remembered for its failed 1863 attack on Fort Wagner from July 18 to Sept. 7 that is depicted in the 1990 award-winning movie, Glory.

This will be the first time since 2018 that Company I has organized a memorial ceremony on Morris Island, said Company I’s education director Donald West. After the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in 2011, participation in Union and Confederate Civil War reenactment groups began to decline, he said. “We still have a group, and we participate in school programs but the events are now smaller and fewer,” he added.

Joseph McGill, Company I’s co-founder, said, “It is good that we are reviving it. Those men always deserve to be honored and doing it at the place of the action certainly does that.” McGill often talks about history deniers who’d like to wipe African American contributions from the textbooks.

“This is part of that history they don’t want taught,” McGill said. “They don’t want their children to know their noble cause was defeated with the assistance of Black soldiers of that period,” he said. “They think it is too devisive and kids will be upset and mad” when they learn the true history of slavery and the Civil War. —Herb Frazier

Lowcountry’s James to be conservation group’s 3rd director

South Carolina’s Coastal Conservation League, one of the state’s preeminent advocacy organizations, has a new leader — a Mount Pleasant native and Harvardtrained lawyer who has seen how unbridled growth and development changed the Lowcountry landscape.

Faith Rivers James, 57, is the league’s new executive director, a position vacated late last year when the nonprofit’s second director, Laura Cantral, moved to Atlanta for family reasons. James, who will begin her duties Aug. 15, was tapped for the role after a national search, according to a news release.

In an interview, James, who currently is a faculty leader at The Citadel, said her new role would open another life chapter.

“I feel that to whom much is given, much is

required,” she said. “I’m very passionate about having communities prevent the expansive growth like in the community I grew up. I grew up. All of my old neighbors are gone.”

James added that stepping away from academia isn’t much of a stretch because she’s long been an advocate in various roles, including as a volunteer leader at the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation.

James “I have missed that diverse interaction,” she said of community advocacy. “I’ve taught what I did in practice so I’ve never strayed

far from these topics in my scholarship.”

James said she looked forward to applying leadership experiences from her past “to the challenges of protecting the environment, sustaining our rural landscapes, and preserving our local communities. As a native, I am honored to carry on the Conservation League’s legacy of advocating for our beautiful Lowcountry.”

James currently serves at The Citadel as assistant provost for leadership and head of its Department of Leadership Studies. She is a 1983 graduate of PorterGaud and holds college degrees from Dartmouth College (1986) and Harvard Law School (1990).

Thursday’s announcement added, “Within four years of lauching her

law career in Washington, D.C., she was negotiating the federal budget as senior counsel to the House of Majority Leader. Soon thereafter, she returned to the Lowcountry and served as executive director of the South Carolina Bar Foundation where she was instrumental in launching the Heir’s Property Preservation Project.

Ceara Donnelley, chair of the Conservation League’s board, said James was uniquely positioned to head the organization “as a property law scholar and land use expert, nonprofit executive and legislative attorney, seasoned administrator and teacher of leadership, and perhaps most importantly, as an effective and nimble community advocate.”—Andy Brack

Lincolnville is already home to historic sites like the Lincolnville School, the community’s first public school for Black students that opened in 1924 The Rev. Richard Cain (1825-1887), a major Reconstruction leader who pastored Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church after the war, is credited with leading the effort to found Lincolnville. He later was elected to the state Senate in 1868 and served two terms in the U.S. Congress.

He should have left when he was ahead.

Lost in translation A man called the police June 12 to report the theft of four golf carts, a trailer, a floor jack and a wheel lock from his Folly work address. Upon arrival, police saw that the man’s white truck had been spray-painted with “Merry X-Mas” and “Happy B-day.”

Police later arrested a woman for the theft. Wonder if she ever understood the concept behind “well wishes.”

It’s not every day that a whole town gets added to a national historic network, but that’s what happened Tuesday for Lincolnville, a town of about 2,500 people on the edge of Charleston County near Summerville.

The National Park Service announced July 5 that Lincolnville and four other sites were new additions to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, a group of sites largely centered on South Carolina that help to tell the story of American Reconstruction after the Civil War. It’s part of an effort established in 2019 to create the Reconstruction Era National Historic Park in Beaufort.

Lincolnville’s part of the Reconstruction story is key to understanding the transformation that the United States underwent as newly freed African Americans became integrated into the country’s social, political, economic and labor systems.

Lincolnville, the Park Service said in a news release, is a “freedmen’s town founded in 1867 by seven African American men who purchased 620 acres to create a community of homes, churches and schools for African American people, primarily of Gullah Geechee heritage, who had migrated from the Sea Islands.”

Some of the descendents of original settlers still live today in the small town “among original structures, cemeteries and live oak trees, actively preserving their rich Gullah Geechee heritage and celebrating their ancestors’ ability to overcome adversity during Reconstruction to found Lincolnville.”

“These sites tell critical stories related to the Reconstruction Era,” said Reconstruction Era National Historical Park Superintendent Scott Teodorski in the release. “They join sites from across the country that focus on this important period in our history. We are pleased to welcome these new sites to the network and work with them to share their stories.”

Don’t expect gas prices to get back to $2 per gallon A

by Wisconsin cartoonist Phil Hands offers something different when a woman says to the man, “Gas prices are coming down. Is Biden responsible for that?” The driver, clearly unbothered by his initial reaction, remarks, “Of course not. The price of gas is determined by a complex global marketplace that can’t be controlled by one man.”

Biden never has been to blame for rising gas prices around the world. As our country engaged in the war in Ukraine, he steadily warned the prices would rise some.

But Republicans, chomping at the bit to score political points despite outright fictions, said gas prices rose because of the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline (that wouldn’t bring any oil to the U.S. for domestic consumption), a temporary halt to drilling on public lands and every other kind of reason under the sun. All incorrect. All misleading.

Unfortunately, gullible voters bit on the fake news and misinformation and chipped away at our democracy.

Biden’s popularity dipped.

What Americans should realize is gas prices have been relatively low in the United States for years. Only now are Americans paying what people around the world have been paying for years — and now their gas prices are even higher than ours.

In the last month in South Carolina, the average price of gas has dropped 45 cents to $4.14 per gallon, according to a broad survey by GasBuddy. And while that’s $1.29 per gallon more than a year ago, look at prices now in other parts of the world. Last week when the average national gas price was $5.05 per gallon, it was $6.43 per gallon in Canada, $7.27 in Germany, $8 in France, $8.47 in Sweden and $8.78 in the United Kingdom, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

While Big Oil continues to make outlandish quarterly profits and should be held accountable for high gas prices, we must accept the fact that we’ve paid comparatively low prices for gasoline for years. With the way the economy and global markets are going, it’s unlikely gas prices will come down soon to cheap levels of just a few years ago.

So what can you do about it? Conserve energy.

Carpool. Drive less. Keep your vehicle maintained. Inflate tires to proper levels. Don’t drive with a full tank so you don’t carry around a bunch of extra weight.

Or you could consider swapping your gas guzzler for a hybrid or a model that gets vastly better mileage. Or switch to an increasingly popular electric vehicle, which some say are reaching a tipping point of acceptance in the American market. (There are even electric trucks now!)

Energy is a vexing, hot-button topic. But let’s point fingers in the right direction — and take some personal responsibility to lower the amounts of gas we use.

Case in point of the wrong: A kangaroo hearing by a special S.C. House committee on July 7 to vet a strict abortion ban bill, even though there is still no language attached to the bill that people can parse or criticize. What’s more infuriating is anti-abortion religious zealots and their lemmings are pushing a complete ban without even waiting to see the consequences of a near-total ban that just went into place a few days back after the overturning of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The right way to do things: Have fair hearings with alternating points of view (instead of stacking the people who you agree with at the beginning) to discuss a bill that actually has language to consider. Even better: Don’t rush things now but wait for the regular legislative process in January. Because of the “fetal heartbeat” abortion ban that the state is now under, there can be virtually no abortions six weeks after conception anyway.

If half of them won these independent write-in battles against the 51 GOP sponsors of the kneejerk abortion ban proposal, they would wreak havoc on the legislative system and could wrestle control of the chamber away from Republicans. Imagine independents and Democrats in South Carolina caucusing to pick the next leadership team.

U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond’s example is instructive. Back in 1954, U.S. Sen. Burnet Maybank Sr. of Charleston was running for election unopposed as a Democrat. But he died two months before the election.

The Democratic Party then picked state Sen. Edgar Brown, who ran things in the state Senate, as its candidate without a primary.

Thurmond, who had just completed a term as a Democratic governor, balked and mounted a write-in campaign. He won with 63% of the vote and became the first person ever to be elected to the U.S. Senate via a write-in campaign.

harleston-raised singer/brass player Leah Suárez was part of a formative group of influencers who not only nurtured the early-2000s jazz scene and set up a foundation for Charleston Jazz to flourish into what it is today, but also spent many nights singing and playing within the scene itself.

Suárez started at College of Charleston’s (CofC) jazz program in 2000. Longtime jazz proponent and columnist Jack McCray became a mentor to Suárez and inspired her to get involved in cultivating a Charleston infrastructure for jazz. Considering two prolific jazz players, Tommy Gill and Quentin Baxter, were also her professors at CofC, Suárez experienced firsthand how the college’s music department offered the chance to create networks with working musicians.

“But there were no women who were leading the pack — aside from Ann Caldwell singing and Bobbie Storm singing — and I didn’t know where I fit within that. I didn’t really have access to women who were mas-

or the past seven years, Ear for Music booking agent Erika Lamble has mostly booked weddings and private events for the Mount Pleasant-based entertainment agency. She’s found that she’s rarely run across another local female booker. Lamble also represents local acts Seth G, DJ rDot, DJ Natty Heavy and several male acoustic acts in addition to booking for Firefly Distillery and The Refinery.

“I book a lot of males,” Lamble said. “I feel like a lot of people just expect that a male is going to be the performer. If I have a corporate planner that says, ‘Send me five bands to send to my client,’ I always make sure to throw a couple women in because they just kind of expect it’s going to be a male solo acoustic guitar player. I wish I was booking women more. I wish more people were taking the bite.

“Women tend to be the support singers.

The woman is always kind of the afterthought. And that’s something that needs to change.”

uiana Parler is a vocalist and composer for the Grammy Awardwinning roots music group Ranky Tanky. She had her first Charleston show with female performers at age 11 at an old place called the Coconut Club on Market Street with Gullah/jazz singer Ann Caldwell and gospel act The Lucas Sisters.

And since then, it seems she’s been surrounded by women as she came up in the Charleston music scene. Parler’s vocal teacher at the Dock Street Theatre, the late June Bonner, would make sure Parler saw Tina Turner, Bette Midler and Anita Baker’s shows when they played in Charleston. Then from about ages 15 to 18, Parler performed in a show at Charleston Music Hall called “The Serenade Show” with several female dancers and singers.

Fast forward to today and Parler also leads the in-demand party band, Quiana Parler & Friends when she’s not touring with Ranky Tanky.

“I deal with up to 13 guys in my party band on stage, and I’m the only female,” Parler said. “It’s all about timing and boundaries. I’m an alpha female. It’s all about finding your position and meeting people where they are at the exact moment.”

women, it’s just the resources [to find] these people [aren’t] as strong these days.”

Perhaps it’s a matter of women-centered shows being overshadowed by more marketable acts in town, Park said. To her, it’s important for bookers and promoters to be intentionally representational and diverse to combat the status quo with women’s showcases and women’s nights at bars and restaurants that feature live music.

She believes opportunities are accessible here for femme musicians, but the group is facing burnout from the past couple of years.

“You can pool together resources — it’s just the push to do it that has been difficult recently,” Park said. “There’s always the glass ceiling working somewhat against women and trans women.

People say they want to support [us], but it plateaus out [at] a point — like speaking on the issues if it’s Women’s History Month and then the rest of the time [the media is] covering the same stuff because the media finds it more comfortable.”

Park has always managed herself, she said, because she realizes the industry doesn’t see her as marketable in comparison to more mainstream images. But to her, it just means that people haven’t put in the effort required to respect women and queer musicians’ professional acumen.

“There are companies here [and] brands who are willing to support artists without prejudice,” Park said. “There’s Sightsee Coffee and Tarpon Cellars. It doesn’t have to be Pride Month or Women’s History Month for them to reach out [to me] and say what are your needs as an artist?

“My band stands for women’s empowerment because I was taught by powerful women,” Park said. “ I keep the faith [that] hopefully one day somebody would look up to me that way.”

Although Suárez spends the the majority of her time in Mexico these days, she continues to be involved in the Charleston community. She said she is excited to see what arises for young women now that music education is more accessible.

“What I would love to see more of is the cultivation of professional spaces for artists, especially for women and women of color, to be able to produce, to be autonomous and to be fully supported. That’s what’s lacking here,” Suárez said.

To her, equality doesn’t mean giving women a chance, but bringing them to the table. It’s about men stepping up and asking, “How about we do this together?”

“A rising tide lifts all boats,” she said.

Suárez currently is creative director of her production company DELALUZ Global that does virtual collaborations all over the world, including South Africa, Copenhagen and New York City. She served as musical supervisor on a recent film project produced through La Cumbre Collective entitled Durga: Forging a New Trail, which tells the story of 34-year-old Nepalese woman Durga Rawal and her path to independence. Suárez contributed vocals and created a score for the film project in collaboration with Los Angeles-based artist Kenny Lyon.

Andrews embraces the science of decision-making

The brutal 2018 Parkland, Fla., school shooting changed everything for Mount Pleasant Dr. Annie Andrews.

“Before that, I was not political,” she said. “I was a voter. I really didn’t get engaged. The Parkland shooting propelled me to join Moms Demand Action.”

On that tragic February day at Stoneman Douglas High School, a 19-year-old shot and killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

Andrews said joining the national effort to reduce gun violence directly relates to her day job as a pediatrician who cares for children. But it also opened her eyes to understand she needed to do more.

“It helped me understand how the lawmaking process happens,” Andrews said on a bright July day in an open, comfortable living room with a huge vaulted ceiling. “It snowballed and started me seeing all of the other issues.”

Andrews, 41, is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress. She wants to replace incumbent freshman Nancy

Mace, a Republican who won a tight primary in June.

“The more time you spend among lawmakers, you realize you are fully capable of doing that job,” she said.

“Most of them are not experts at anything and that’s OK if you seek out experts when you need it.”

But all too often, that doesn’t happen, she said, pointing to the political debate over guns in America which she says is defined more by rhetoric and is “completely devoid of facts.”

“Every decision I make in health care is data-inspired,” she said. “Treatment is based on data. If our laws were based on data, we could do so much good. It’s a totally different approach to problem-solving.”

Just this month, Andrews was promoted to become a professor of pediatrics. She’s also stepped away from the active life of a daily pediatrician to focus on the congressional race.

“I always wanted to be a doctor,” she said. “The science particularly fascinated me.”

As a pediatrician, she said she enjoys the fact that when children come to the hospital, she gives them the best care possible — regardless of who they are or where they are from.

“I get to treat them with a standard of care — no matter what.”

Then she started doing clinical research into reducing gun violence to reduce the number of pediatric injuries from firearms. She started talking with groups and advocating for gun violence prevention, particularly through calls for measures to store guns safely and provide better education about gun safety.

The research and advocacy led her to realize that she could help more than individual patients, but a population by making things safer for kids.

And the logical extension — running for Congress to help kids across the country.

“Why isn’t it everyone’s priority to do what’s best for kids?” she asks. “It seems to be obvious to me.”

Your passion: Gun violence prevention: “It’s the leading cause of death of children. I’m a pediatrician and researcher.

Every single one of those deaths is preventable.”

Making data-driven decisions

Andrews said she wants to help members of Congress focus on the importance of using science in making decisions for the country.

“Every single committee could benefit from people with a scientific background who are data-driven in their decision-making,” she said. “We are not in a normal election cycle. There are so many urgent issues now that we have to right the ship.”

Andrews has pledged she would only serve three terms in Congress, if elected.

“This election is going to be about women’s reproductive health and gun violence,” she said, adding that more people are paying attention to politics now than ever before, particularly after a May school shooting in Texas that left 19 dead and 17 wounded.

She also said she felt she was in the right place at the right time to help lead people away from anger and fear that’s infected the nation.

“I’d feel a little helpless if I was just a bystander when all of this is happening.”

In 2011, Andrews married Charlie Andrews, a neurological critical care doctor at MUSC, at a ceremony on Charleston Harbor. Now, they’re raising three children in an updated 2,747-square-foot cottage home near Shem Creek. It’s got a crisp, airy great room that’s open to a stylish kitchen. A white-countertopped island features hydrangeas from the front yard and an icy pitcher of tea glistening with beads of condensed water. Nearby is Charlie’s office. Just down a hall off the master bedroom is another office — Andrews’ small pink office that looks out onto a kidney-shaped pool.

There’s always something good in the refrigerator, but necessities include milk, sparkling water, berries, eggs and cheese.

Andrews, true to Midwestern roots, said a cheeseburger is her favorite food. But she’s grown to enjoy cooking shrimp and grits, a favorite of one of her children. With the trial and error of a scientist, she said she has learned to cook the grits in chicken stock, eventually adding butter, cheese and milk. She sautes the shrimp in butter. After she puts the shrimp on the grits, she crumbles bacon on top, to the delight of her family.

One of the most important considerations for proper placement of your fiddle-leaf fig is to locate where in your home you get the most indirect bright light. These plants love light, but direct light (if not introduced slowly) might burn the leaves. Find a place in your home that has plenty of sunlight. Do not place it directly under a vent as the air turning on and off is not ideal.

Watering your fiddle-leaf fig is easy.

These plants like to be watered about once a week, but to ensure that you are not overwatering, stick your finger in the soil and if the top 2" to 3" is dry, then it is time to Reale water. Water it so the soil is saturated but not soggy. Be sure your pot has drainage to avoid root rot.

Encourage growth in the spring and summer with fertilizer. Any highnitrogen fertilizer will do, and even Amazon sells a product specifically formulated for these plants.

Take good care of your fiddle-leaf fig by wiping its beautiful big leaves with a damp cloth or neem oil. Not only does this encourage good health but they look better without dust on the surface.

Tucked in the very back corner on Firefly Distillery’s grassy lawn sits a next-generation hydroponic farm inside a shipping container: King Tide Farms, owned and operated by lifelong Charlestonian Hamilton Horne.

The near shutdown and delay of transportation and production in the country during the pandemic led Horne to a realization about the state of produce. Food shortages, the lack of transparency about where produce originates (90% of leafy greens come from California and Arizona, according to Horne) and nutrients lost during transportation drove him into researching hydroponics.

For the next two years, Horne spent countless hours studying hydroponic farms, different vegetables and the logistics of running a farm out of a shipping container, including the constraints, the possibilities and the benefits to local restaurants and chefs.

Prior to this, Horne never really knew what he wanted to do. He worked odd jobs as a line cook in several restaurants, went to the University of Mississippi for a business degree, worked in agricultural chemical Horne sales for three years and as a real estate agent for more than a decade.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Horne said. “And I’ve spent so many years trying to figure out something to do. I tried to do an oyster farm; tried to do a mushroom farm back before it was cool … And then finally, during Covid, I was like, ‘You know, something’s gotta change. I gotta change it. I gotta do it. If now’s not the time, then when is?’ And then it just all hit perfectly.”

How exactly does a hydroponic farm work? Well for Horne, King Tide isn’t a traditional hydroponic farm: “Hydroponic farming means grown in water, so that’s going to be the big thing,”

In addition to traditional veggies like romaine, King Tide grows more unusual greens like wasabi arugula and culantro Horne explained. “We’re kind of a mix between it. We are a hydroponic smart farm inside of a shipping container.

“It’s a little bit of hydroponics, but it’s not fully submerged in water at all times.”

Smart farming, according to Horne, is having complete control over the environment in the shipping container. Everything from lighting, air temperature, carbon dioxide levels, humidity, nutrients, water temperature and more are controlled

by Horne. He learned this method from Freight Farms in Boston, when researching hydroponic farming methods, where he also purchased his shipping container.

Once he secured a permanent location for his shipping container at Firefly, Horne spent months perfecting a product he could stand behind. By the end of May, King Tide Farms officially launched and sold to local businesses, including recently opened Cold Shoulder Gourmet, Sushi Ninja and Red Drum, to name a few.

What grows inside King Tide’s shipping container will be different from what other local hydroponic farm Vertical Roots is growing, Horne said.

“I can’t compete with Vertical Roots,” he added. “They’re crushing it. I would say I’m more of a salad mix guy, or more specifically, I can offer you components for your current salad mix. So that’s where I think I can have something that uplifts that meal if you’re missing one last ingredient to tie your dish together.”

have never tried or even heard of. For example, wasabi arugula — one leaf from the plant gives that sharpness of wasabi and disappears, a hit-and-run of spice to the tongue. Another is borage, a fuzzy, leafy plant that, when eaten, tastes exactly like a cucumber, and the red vein sorrel, a plant that can add citrus flavors to any salad mix. And for those who love the taste of cilantro, King Tide grows culantro, which has a longer leaf and a stronger flavor. Some Asian herbs are also grown in the container, too. Find plants like red shiso, Thai basil and mizuna.

If you’re looking for microgreens, King Tide has those, too. He offers microgreens of borage, melon, shiso, onion, kale, broccoli and more.

To sum up the entire farm, Horne said, “the best word to describe us is custom; I can custom harvest; I can custom grow; I can change the lights in here to alter colors.

I can just do so many different things to alter it and I can custom any kind of produce that you want.”

Horne is open and willing to work with chefs and individuals for their specific needs.

The location at Firefly helps keep King Tide hyperlocal, within 10 to 15 miles from most restaurants.

“I can harvest within hours and get it to you. So that’s the song and dance, really.”

little country bungalow with a big screened in front porch. Josh came in and did the producing on it. We liked his energy and his thoughts and his ability to keep us focused.”

In fact, the band was so comfortable at Fairweather Studio that they were able to record most of the album on the spot.

“I’m not going to say it was all live, but the majority of that record was recorded live in the studio with us going back and fixing vocals or adding a little touch here or there,” Fox said. “But the core of the music was created in the moment in the studio, captured in a very short period of time, and I think that adds to the energy that makes it feel like it’s actually people in a room playing music together.”

Now that the album is out, Fox says that Big Stoner Creek is anxious to play some shows, though he’s quick to add that the days of piling into a Ford Econoline van and playing 300 shows are over.

“We want to try to be a little smarter in our work and more selective,” he said.

And don’t be surprised if the band has at least a couple more studio albums in them, as well.

“I didn’t stop writing songs because Big Stoner Creek wasn’t playing together,” Fox said. “So we’ve got material that we never got to, and we’ve got new material that we’re playing that hasn’t been recorded. So my goal is to record as much as possible between now and when I can’t do it anymore.”

Michael Smallwood, director, PURE Theatre core ensemble member and City Paper contributing arts editor, has been granted the 2023 South Carolina Arts Commission playwriting/ screenwriting fellowship. Smallwood received the fellowship based on several recent projects: his play Retcon, which was performed in Charleston in 2016 and 2017, 2019 in New York and again in Charleston in 2020 as part of PURE Theatre’s virtual play reading series; his 2019 short film How Many Times; and his most recent project, a short film called What a Beautiful Wedding.

Now, with the fellowship under his belt, he’s looking ahead to his next venture.

“I’m hoping to use this either to make another short film or potentially work towards producing my first feature film,” Smallwood said. “I’m going to spend the next few months going through my catalog of stories (both written and currently in the works) to try and decide which one I think is the best fit for this grant — which one speaks to me the most right now. But, my plan is to produce some new film project.”

The $10,000 grant is awarded each fiscal year to artists in several disciplines. Other 2023 recipients include Eunjung Choi, DMA of Orangeburg for performance in music, Rebecca T. Godwin of Georgetown for prose and Marlanda Dekine of Georgetown spoken word/slam poetry.

That said, Powell hopes that none of the bigger ideals that are part and parcel of the practice get lost in translation along the way.

“Breakin’ is definitely more than just cool spins and tricks. It’s about living in the moment, truly being one with the music and representing hip-hop to the fullest,” Powell said. “Out of all of the four elements [of hiphop], it’s my personal favorite, the other three elements being MCing, DJing and graffiti painting. All of the elements, however, share the core values of hip-hop which are rooted in peace, unity and having fun. So, although the head spins and other big moves are really cool, I hope that hip-hop overall is represented well at the Olympic Games.”

In preparation for the 2024 games, Powell has been doing his part to stoke the flames. And thanks to him, on Saturday, July 23, a number of Olympic hopefuls from the East Coast as well as a few rising stars from the Midwest will gather in the Holy City. The general idea is to battle it out for prize money, bragging rights and to “see who reigns supreme” at this art.

“The fact that we are able to throw an event like this in Charleston is a dream come true,” Powell said. “I can’t wait for the people in our city to see what we see every time we go out of town to represent, and for them to see the level that the dancers in their own backyard are at. Ultimately, I’m also hoping that this event will spark more interest in breakin’ in Charleston so that we can expand our community and keep the fire burning strong.

“At this point in my career I’m only as good as my last event,” Powell said. “I’m always learning and I’m always a student.

I’m so thankful for my crew for keeping me grounded and always believing in me on this journey of mine.”

Devante Daniel Powell, aka Bboy Tahu, has been representing Charleston all over the world as a competitive performance artist for the last 12 years. During this time Powell grew into a prominent member of the locally based Dancing on Air (DOA) collective, a group that consistently pushes the boundaries of hip-hop expression through movement.

“While a lot of people call the acrobatic and expressive movement breakdancing, the practitioners of the dance actually refer to it as breakin’,” Powell told the City Paper.

Other Dancing on Air members include Cody Soles, Delma, Ran-Z, J-wall, Aero, Sinobi the funkchild, Adrian and Willy the Hiphop drummer. And, all of the participants are Lowcountry residents who are closely connected to each other, according to Powell. Dancing on Air draws influence and knowledge from Charleston‘s first breaking crew, Hypnotic Body Rock.

“A few of my friends and I, along with my brothers, started our crew DOA in 2010 in the neighborhood called Carnes Crossing in Goose Creek,” Powell said. “The beautiful thing about that is that we all knew each other years before we started dancing so the bond I share with them is something truly special. These have all become my brothers over the last 12 years, and, together, we’ve been on a mission to show the world what Carolina breakin’ is all about.”

It turns out that the world has indeed been watching as Powell and others of his generation have deftly revitalized what many wrongly assumed was a lost art.

Remarkably, it has been announced that this urban-street-dance style will make its official debut in the 2024 Olympic Games.

That’s a huge breakthrough for a subset of dance that has been steadily, if not exactly quietly, regaining momentum for decades.

“It’s funny that breakin’ is becoming super popular again, as if it had gone somewhere and people had not seen it in a while,” Powell said. “But the weird thing is that it never left. It just went underground and slowly, throughout the years, it was building its way back up into the limelight.”

Still, Powell marveled at the staying power of the whole scene. “To see something that started in the Bronx of New York in 1978 by teenagers on cardboard making its way to the Olympic stage is nothing short of inspiring,” he said. “There are already Bboys that are being sponsored by major corporations such as Nike, Vans, Monster Energy and even Red Bull. So, who knows what the next level will be after it touches the Olympic stage.”
