‘Abortion is health care’ HOW ABORTION NOW WORKS IN SOUTH CAROLINA
News 08.03.2022
By Samantha Connors

fter the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade June 24, state abortion laws, particularly in red, Southern states, changed rapidly. In South Carolina, for example, the ruling triggered a 6-week “fetal heartbeat” abortion ban and now, some lawmakers want a total ban. “The laws are designed to be very difficult for people to understand,” said a North Carolina staffer at the two-state Carolina Abortion Fund (CAF) who wanted to be on record simply as Justine. North Carolina’s Dr. Katherine Farris, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, added, “[Legislators] are saying they know better, and they don’t. They don’t have the training. They don’t have the expertise. And more important than either of those, they don’t have any compassion or care for what patients are going through. “To be clear, abortion is health care. It should not be treated this way … Legislators should not be able to insert themselves into the conversation.” Right now, abortion is still legal in South Carolina, though procedures can only be performed when no fetal cardiac activity is detected, which typically begins around six weeks of pregnancy. “Six weeks is when most people don’t even realize they’re pregnant,” said Columbia’s Vicki Ringer, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood South
Atlantic. “They’re late by two weeks, and for many women, depending on birth control methods, they may not have periods at all.” Many factors can cause menstrual periods to stop or become irregular — birth control methods, high levels of exercise, taking certain medications — all of which make it difficult to suspect pregnancy at six weeks. “The law says that Ringer every woman who wants an abortion has to have an ultrasound, even though it is not medically required for an abortion at an early stage of pregnacy,” said Ringer. “At six weeks, you can generally hear fetal cardiac activity through the use of a trans-vaginal ultrasound, but at six weeks, there is no heart. There are no chambers. What you’re looking at is an embryo that has no measurable weight — you can’t even say that it weighs an ounce.” But according to current South Carolina law, an abortion would be prohibited at this point. Because of this accelerated time limit and short time frame today, women’s reproductive health professionals generally recommend women seek care as soon as they suspect pregnancy, sources say. “In the past, we had people taking a little
more time to raise the money that they’ve needed to pay for an abortion. You know $500 is just not something most people have as disposable cash,” said Ringer. “Nowadays, we tell people don’t wait until you’ve raised the money. We have abortion funds. We have amazing donors who have stepped up so that they can help these women get care earlier.”
If you think you may want an abortion now
South Carolinians seeking abortion care are advised to contact Planned Parenthood South Atlantic or verified women’s health clinics as soon as they suspect pregnancy. The health care provider will determine if the woman is eligible for an abortion in South Carolina. If not, they can help make an appointment in North Carolina, where laws permit abortion up to 24-28 weeks, arrange travel logistics and help with cost. After making an appointment, women can also contact Carolina Abortion Fund, which serves North Carolina and South Carolina. The organization aids women seeking abortion care by helping with the finanical cost of the procedure and travel. “We have an active transportation network,” said Justine. “We’ll give people money for Uber; give people gas money. We’ll do everything we can to try and help them.”

“
Anyone who chooses self-managed abortion should know that they can reach out to the medical community if they need help, if they’re have a complication or a problem.” —Dr. Katherine Farris, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
But for many women, traveling for a procedure is still unfeasible. North Carolina law requires a 72-hour waiting period between meeting with a health care provider and receiving care. This law is intended to deter women from abortion as providers are required to present patients with statedirected materials discouraging abortion. As a result, South Carolinians traveling to North Carolina for health care must spend at least three days there. Aside from the cost of the procedure and travel, women must also take time off of work and find child care if they already have children. South Carolina has a similar statute, requiring 24 hours between the presenta-
“Self-managed abortion” and its risks
What happens now for South Carolina women who are past the 6-week mark and who are unable to travel? Legally, there are no more options in South Carolina to terminate a pregnancy. But some women are turning to self-managed abortions. A “self-managed abortion” is an at-home medication abortion done without a medical professional, sometimes referred to as “Plan C.” (Plan C is not to be confused with a brand of emergency contraceptive called Plan B, which does not terminate a pregnancy.) About 60% of abortions are performed with medication, according to Ringer. But using or possessing the two abortion medications — mifepristone and misoprostol — is illegal in South Carolina past six weeks. When a medication abortion is provided in a clinic, the patient typically takes the first pill at a health care center and then takes a second pill at home. Telehealth visits for abortion care are illegal in North and South Carolina, though the FDA considers receiving abortion medication via telehealth completely safe, said Ringer. Women who are traveling to North Carolina for abortions are eligible to receive a medication abortion under North Carolina law, but traveling back into South Carolina with the medication does put patients at the risk of being criminally prosecuted. “You could be charged with a crime and go to jail for just possessing [those two drugs],” said Ringer. “If you had them and you tried to sell them to others, that would be a crime. You’d have harsher criminal penalties for possessing those pills than you would if you had pounds and pounds of hard drugs that you were distributing.” Though it is illegal, many women feel they are in a dire situation and are choosing to CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

tion of materials about abortion and an abortion appointment. A North Charleston resident this week spoke to City Paper about her experience seeking an abortion in South Carolina seven years ago. Even then under the protection of the Roe precedent, South Carolina law still required providers to show state-directed materials. “When I went for my appointment, they brought me into a room with all these other girls that are getting one and had us watch these videos about the life process,” she said. “It was a legal thing. They were legally required to try to talk you out of it basically.” She said the experience felt incredibly patronizing. “Everybody in that room has thought about every single option that they possibly could probably 8 million times before they ended up there. And you don’t have any privacy during it. You don’t have a choice. “There’s not another medical procedure in the world that makes you do that.”

Blotter of the Week Bloody slave revolt topic of slave cabin conference
News 08.03.2022

The Stono Rebellion, South Carolina’s most consequential slave revolt nearly three centuries ago, is the topic of the seventh annual Slave Dwelling Project Conference in September at the College of Charleston. The conference, the Stono Rebellion and the Atlantic World, is an in-depth look at the rebellion, the largest and deadliest revolt by enslaved people in colonial British North America led by enslaved Africans along the Stono River near present-day Caw Caw Interpretive Center south of Charleston. On Sept. 9, 1739, a group of about 20 enslaved Africans armed themselves, killed two white men at Hutchinson Store and were headed to freedom in Spanish Florida before they were caught and hanged. The uprising ended with the deaths of 30 Whites and 44 Africans. Scheduled speakers at the conference, Sept. 8-10, include national scholars, researchers and two public school educators from North Carolina and Florida who teach about slavery and Black resistance as some lawmakers across the country are trying to bar those topics from classrooms. In South Carolina, a grassroots coalition of civil rights and education groups were successful this past legislative session to stop five so-called critical race theory (CRT) bills that would squash the teaching of history, if it includes sex, race and slavery. While the Stono Rebellion is not specifically mentioned in standards for South Carolina students, it does appear as suggested content to explore in the Alignment Guide for Grade 8, said Derek Phillips, director of communications for the S.C. Department of Education. “It could be a part of Grade 4, 6 or U.S. history and the Constitution content, if a teacher chose to include that content in instruction.” Co-panelists North Carolina educator Valencia Abbott and retired Florida teacher Brigitta McTigue will discuss how they teach children tough topics such as slavery and rebellion. “Yes, I teach Nat Turner’s Rebellion!” is the title of Abbott’s address. She is a social studies teacher at the Rockingham Early College High School in Wentworth, N.C. “What Slave Auction Notices Reveal about the Lives of Early African Americans” is McTigue’s presenta-

She is a retired teacher at Park Vista Community High School in Lake Worth, Fla. Abbott said because she teaches high school at an early college she has more leeway than traditional teachers. “I don’t know what is taught at the earlier grade levels, but with my interaction with a summer program for our school district for elementary and middle school students, I found that no students were familiar with what I consider basic Black history knowledge, such as who is Jackie Robinson,” the first black man to play in major league baseball, she said. “This was before the CRT pushback, so I am pretty sure [there is] less emphasis on any Black history or subjects that teachers fear controversial. I have heard teachers say they don’t plan to teach anything that deals with slavery. [A teacher] is not truly teaching U.S. history or even world history unless slavery is addressed.” Enslaved people who participated in the Stono Rebellion were headed to Spanish Florida where they were promised freedom if they fought for Spain against the English. Before the rebellion, escaped slaves from the Carolina Colony established Fort Mose in 1738 north of St. Augustine, the first town of free Blacks in the present-day United States. They also joined with indigenous people, the Seminoles, to wage two wars against U.S. soldiers before they were defeated and pushed west of the Mississippi River. McTigue said, “I don’t think that most students in Florida are taught the relationship between the Stono Rebellion and Fort Mose, Spanish Florida and the Black Seminoles. The reason for this is that although the curriculum for eighth grade U.S. history covers the colonial period, the state standards don’t require the teaching of that specific topic. It is possible that some teachers decide to include this information, however.” The U.S. history course in Florida is required in eleventh grade, but it begins with

A historical marker denotes the area where the Stono Rebellion took place the Civil War and continues chronologically “so colonial America is not addressed in the curriculum for that class,” McTigue said. “I taught an elective high school course called African and African American History, and in my class I did teach about the Stono Rebellion and Fort Mose. [Students] found it interesting that Fort Mose was the first free Black settlement in what is now the United States. They also recognized the fact that although Fort Mose is a very important historic site, most Florida residents probably never heard of it.” Joseph McGill, Slave Dwelling Project founder, said some politicians fear the truth of slavery and use the feelings of White students to object to Black history. “They continue to allow white supremacy to exist by defining the teaching of Black history as critical race theory. They are protecting the roles Whites played in allowing racism and white privilege to persist. This fringe element has a powerful voice and wants these children to grow up to be the racists that they are. The conference is our attempt to shine a light on that.” Organized by the Slave Dwelling Project, the conference is a collaboration with the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program and the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program (CLAW) at the college. An officer responded July 9 at the downtown residence of a man who claimed his ex-girlfriend shattered his $500 Venetian glass sculpture. The ex-girlfriend admitted to police that she threw the sculpture out of frustration. The man told police he wanted to report her for stealing her own engagement ring. Police said the two would have to settle that issue privately. Sounds like that’s not going to happen. Late for a very important date A man forcefully pulled up the mechanical garage arm of a downtown parking garage as he was trying to get his Kia Soul out on July 9 and ended up causing $2,000 worth of damage to the machine. Wonder where he was headed in such a hurry. Follow your dreams A car dealership manager in West Ashley reported July 9 to police that a man tried to buy two 2022 Maseratis with fake paperwork that claimed he was waiting on money from a trust. The day before, he asked to test drive a model and drove so erratically that the sales associate had to cut it short. According to the dealership, the man was trying to buy a $150,763 Quattroporte and a $98,333 Levante. At least he’s living his best life (in his head). order these pills online. Because of medical advancements, the days of “coat hanger abortions” are mostly gone, many abortion advocates say, and illegally obtaining abortion medication is a much safer option for an unlawful abortion. Abortion medication is considered safer than Tylenol and Ibuprofen. “We know that the medications available for self-managed abortion are safe to the best of our knowledge and we know that medication abortion is incredibly safe and very, very succesful,” said Dr. Farris. A platform called PlanC.org provides information on obtaining abortion medication in the U.S. and through online, international pharmacies. There are risks to ordering these pills online: They are not FDA approved and obtaining them is considered illegal in South Carolina. PlanC.org orders and tests pills from the recommended sites but cannot guarantee reliability in the future, according to its website. Opting to have a self-managed abortion has risks if medical complications arise or an incomplete abortion occurs, Farris said. “No one should ever be forced to engage in health care outside of the health care system because a legislature blocks their access,” she said. “Anyone who chooses selfmanaged abortion should know that they can reach out to the medical community if they need help, if they’re having a complication or a problem.”
One woman’s experience
This was the case for the North Charleston woman who shared her story above. After receiving a medication abortion, a blockage occured in her uterus, causing extreme bleeding as her body tried to rid itself of the fetal tissue but could not. This required extra medical attention and a surgical procedure. “I was scared. I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “I can’t even imagine if that happened to me today because I had that option at the time to, no matter how scared I was, to still go back to the doctor. Today, if the language of the legislature says it is illegal to perform an abortion after six weeks, the second procedure I had, is that legal?” Though it is rare, this scenario is one of many playing out in health care centers and hospitals across the state. Complications with abortions and even wanted pregnancies are leaving doctors confused and unable to act in the patients’ best interest at the risk of losing their license, getting sued or even being criminally prosecuted. With Senate bill S.1373 currently in committee in the state Senate seeking to ban all abortions without exceptions for rape, incest or medical emergencies, the situation for women may become even more difficult. “I think that being forced to carry a pregnancy you do not want to carry is cruel, unusual punishment,” said Justine.
Women’s reproductive health options: 1. Talk to your women’s health care provider about contraceptive options to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Contraceptive options include, but are not limited to, birth control pills, patches and intrauterine devices (commonly referred to as IUDs). 2. Keep emergency contraceptive Plan B on hand. There is a misconception that Plan B is abortion medication. This is not true. Plan B is an emergency contraceptive that can be taken up to five days after sex. You should only take Plan B if you have had unprotected sex or there was a lapse in contraceptive intake (for example, missing a birth control pill). Plan B is an effective means for preventing an unwanted pregnancy. Women with higher Body Mass Indexes should be aware that these pills may be less effective. You can purchase Plan B over the counter at local pharmacies or order online. Plan B should not be used in place of traditional contraceptives like birth control pills or IUDs. 3. Contact Planned Parenthood South Atlantic or another verified abortion provider to learn about your options. Planned Parenthood can also help patients make an out-of-state appointment. Or use AbortionFinder.org to locate verified providers in your state or surrounding states. 4. Contact Carolina Abortion Fund after making an appointment if you need help with financial costs or travel logistics. 5. Visit PlanC.org to learn about receiving abortion medications from other U.S. states or online, international pharmacies. These medications can be used in a self-managed abortions (abortions without an medical professional involved), though it is illegal in some states. Check state laws before ordering medication via the internet. —Samantha Connors Ringer added, “The most extreme legislators don’t believe there should be exceptions for rape or incest. They have limited the exemptions for women’s health. A woman must be near death before she can get an abortion and there are situations where there can never be a viable pregnancy. “[In some situations] women are being force to, instead of having an abortion, they must go through labor and delivery of a dead fetus. It is terrible. It’s cruel at the basic level, but women are suffering because doctors’ hands are tied.”

o one can argue that Charleston doesn’t face big issues, such as flooding, other effects of climate change, bad roads, an inequitable education system and the need for more affordable housing. Our issues, however, are vastly different in scale from those faced in our sister city to the South, Savannah. Dubbed the “Hostess City of the South,” Savannah has the same antebellum roots that Charleston has — beautiful architecture and charm dripping in a vibrant downtown filled with history. It’s got indisputably delicious cuisine, like the peach gazpacho and Georgia white shrimp on the menu at the award-winning The Grey restaurant. People flock to Bonaventure Cemetery, drawn in by stories like those in John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. But despite Savannah’s muddy river views and jarring cobblestone streets, the city has become kind of worn and trashy. Walking through Savannah’s commercial streets on a recent blistering day exposed visitors to an alarming number of tourists and drunks drinking cheap beer and frozen drinks from a plethora of somewhat seedy bars. The whiff of weed filled the air in an area of what should be charming parks. The heat and booze left at least one partier visibly sick. All the while: Not a police officer was to be seen. It wouldn’t have taken much for the teeming

crowd to turn mean. Compare that Savannah party atmosphere with Charleston’s outside experience on the following day. It was just as hot and sticky, but crowds on King Street shopped in stores instead of throwing up on the streets. Panhandlers were few and far between. A sense of history and gentility filled the air as a harbor breeze brushed away the cloying humidity. Yes, Charleston’s different. Perhaps part of the reason is that city fathers here and in North Charleston have ordinances against public consumption of alcohol, thereby stanching the party atmosphere found in Savannah and New Orleans. Sure there are pockets of alcoholic rebellion, such as upper King Street on the weekends. And those annoying bachelorette parties happen here, too. But Charleston’s quieter partying seems relatively tame compared to other places. Let’s hope it stays that way. So let’s count our lucky stars that Charleston’s leaders worked and keep working to make sure our community offers a welcoming, generally positive experience for visitors. Sure, we can do more — like shying away from more horse-drawn wagons and stemming the rush to develop every square foot of land. But keeping a lid on where alcohol can be consumed certainly is a key to our success. Whenever you start thinking that Charleston is a mess, you don’t have to travel far to realize how lucky we still have it.

Radical Republicans in the legislature — the very people who haven’t stopped talking about abortion for two decades and inject it into the legislative debate at the drop of a hat — now want us to stop talking about it completely. And if we don’t? We could be complicit in breaking the law. Of course, the state Senate and then the House would have to pass a version of a bill to ban abortion that includes unconstitutional prohibitions on providing information about abortions. The bill, S. 1373 by Sens. Richard Cash, Rex Rice and Danny Verdin, all Upstate Republicans, would make it a felony to knowingly and intentionally provide abortion information to a pregnant woman or anyone seeking information for a pregnant woman by telephone, internet or any form of communication. The proposal, now in Verdin’s Senate committee, also would make it a felony to host an internet website that provides abortion information. But Rice also admitted the current bill likely wouldn’t be passed with speech muzzles as written. “I’d like to pass it that way, but do I believe it will pass that way? Probably not.” But he repeated, “I would like you not providing information about going to North Carolina to get [an abortion].” When asked about the need to criminalize the news process and people’s ability to share information, Rice said, “I think that is something we need to discuss in committee. Obviously that is an extreme position that myself as a cosponsor of the bill would like to address. We don’t want that information provided. “The three of us that helped draft that bill, none of us are attorneys,” Rice admitted. “I think there’s some stuff that obviously the Andy Brack [Senate] attorneys will say you can’t do that, and we’re going to is editor and have to listen to those concerns.” publisher of But that hasn’t stopped these zealots from poking the bear of free Charleston speech and free press. To lose a child to a catastrophic long-term illness is hell on Earth. As a parent, you feel completely helpless. I prayed constantly that the suffering be taken from my Janey and put on to me. But that never happened. Instead, I watched my daughter suffer for years until she ultimately succumbed to cancer. To this day, it is the most painful experience I have ever endured. Of all the branches of service, the Marine Corps prides itself on honor and integrity. Where is that honor and integrity as it relates to Camp Lejeune? The people of this country rely upon it to protect them and their freedoms were poisoned by their own government. Our military men and women, their family members and the civilian employees deserve more. Our only chance to seek and receive justice is through this legislation. We must urge our elected officials to protect our citizens where the government has failed us and demand that they reciprocate our support. U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jerry M. Ensminger, retired, is a resident of North Carolina.

The Prince of Tides author, Pat Conroy, is buried in an otherwise all-African American cemetery
ven some of Pat Conroy’s close friends didn’t know where he wanted to be buried. It was early 2016 and the author, suffering from cancer, had been severely ill for a month. But after the funeral mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Beaufort, which more than 1,000 people attended, a group of 30 family members and friends gathered at Conroy’s grave at St. Helena Memorial Gardens. At the time, the graveyard on St. Helena Island did not have one White person buried there, until Conroy. “I was surprised,” said fellow Citadel classmate and author John Warley of Beaufort, “but someone later told me Pat went to a funeral there and said it was a peaceful place, and maybe he could be buried there.” For years, Conroy would go on pilgrimages to authors’ graves, such as Thomas Wolfe’s resting place in Asheville, North Carolina. The author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini would see the pens and other mementos left by people who loved Wolfe. Death was a theme in Conroy’s many books, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous. In
The Great Santini, the character based on his father dies in a military plane crash. In a Conroy cookbook, there is a chapter “Why Dying Down South is More Fun.” Answer: Because folks bring delicious food to the grieving family, of course. But beyond literary mortality, Conroy’s own resting place was a determined choice.
How Conroy got to this cemetery
A long history with Beaufort County
Conroy’s first well-known book, The River is Wide, told the story of his teaching job on Daufuskie Island in 1969. It had an all-Black small schoolhouse. The instruction had been so poor some students didn’t know who was president of the country. At the end of the year, Conroy was fired. One of the charges against him was for not allowing corporal punishment. Several of his former students went on to be teachers themselves. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the book’s publication and underlines his choice of his final resting place.

Author Warley now takes visitors to the grave. Haupt sometimes speaks about Conroy’s legacy and lessons in front of the headstone. The grounds are not easy to find, but many do. Pens, coins, medals, flowers — even small bottles of booze — are left on the headstone or on the ground. “The thing that touches me the most are the writing awards authors leave there,” Haupt said. “It is something so valuable to them and Pat is still mentoring and encouraging them.” Perhaps Conroy wanted people who visited his grave to leave with another perspective. “Pat wanted to bring his readers to this area and to this history,” Warley said. Penn Center will celebrate its 160th anniversary in November, commemorating the teaching of formerly enslaved people to read. Pat Conroy wanted to be close by.

He started the process when he was inducted into the Penn Center’s 1862 Circle, which honors people who work on behalf of the Gullah Geechee culture and traditions. Founded during the Civil War in 1862 to teach formerly enslaved children to read, the center later provided a safe place for Whites and Blacks to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and space for other civil rights leaders to speak and teach. Conroy told fellow Penn inductee Roland Gardner of Beaufort he would like to be buried in an African American cemetery. That was years before he got the cancer that would bring him down. “Pat didn’t have a racist bone in his body,” said Gardner, who is Black. “He just thought it was the right thing to do.” Pat Conroy’s cancer came on suddenly in 2016 and it was after his death that Conroy’s widow, writer Cassandra King, contacted Gardner. “Cassandra asked me to find a place, and I thought the appropriate place was St. Helena Memorial Gardens,” he said. Jonathan Haupt, director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort, added, “He’s effectively integrated the cemetery.” The Brick Baptist Church owns and maintains St. Helena Memorial Gardens and the members voted for Conroy’s burial in the gardens. Interned beside him are some of the most notable African Americans in South Carolina. There is Leroy Browne Sr. who in 1960 was the first Black person in the state to be elected to an office since Reconstruction, serving on the Beaufort County Board of Directors. Buried beside him is his wife, Corrine Browne, the administrator and teacher at the Penn Center Nursery School, where she taught hundreds of students.

Van Gogh, who lived 1853-1890, was known for incorporating movement and color into his works
Beyond Van Gogh gives new life to famous Dutch masterworks By Michael Smallwood Stepping into the Beyond Van Gogh immersive art exhibit is like walking directly into a lifesize painting. It is not the typical way that most people view the work of Vincent Van Gogh. There are no placards to read next to stationary paintings. The paintings are infused with animation. There’s an ongoing soundtrack. And, the focus is on the joyful and inspirational aspects of the Dutch painter, who is too often remembered for the tragic aspects of his life. In just six months, Paquin Entertainment Group and Normal Studio designed and completed the exhibit in 2020. Created with Covid in mind, the program travels with very little crew and allows for social distancing, so that those starved for museum experiences can see Van Gogh’s work in a brand new light. With current and past exhibits in 49 U.S. cities, seven Canadian cities and six countries in Central and South America, Beyond Van Gogh is truly taking the world by storm with its unique approach to classic artwork. Guests begin the process by walking
through an area that most resembles a traditional museum. However, Van Gogh’s works are not the first focus; it is instead his words.
The opening section of the exhibit features the story of Van Gogh’s life on large, illuminated panels, punctuated by excerpts of letters exchanged between Vincent and his brother and principal supporter Theo Van Gogh between 1872-1890. “We always have correspondence and letters for artists,” said Fanny Curtat, Beyond Van Gogh’s art history consultant. “But this one is a particularly precious one because over 18 years he had such a deep connection with his brother, Theo. Theo was everything for him. When you read these letters, you have a better sense of how much more there is to him than just the ear cutting incident and ‘Starry Night.’ ” The quotes taken from the letters paint a picture of Van Gogh that goes against the popular image of a deeply depressive figure. There are words that speak to his great love of art, of the world around him, of his friends and family and his aspirations to do more and be better in the world. One particular favorite of Curtat’s reads: “To succeed, to have lasting prosCONTINUED ON PAGE 17

The superstars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) are returning to the North Charleston Coliseum for the last time this year on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Professional wrestling as an art form has seen a myriad of evolutions and changes throughout its nearly 100-year-long history, and stands, in its current form, as one of the most spectacular and populous forms of live theater that currently exist in the world. With WWE’s annual SummerSlam megaevent having just concluded in Nashville, last Saturday, and the newsworthy major shakeups to the company’s leadership, WWE is headed in a brand new direction. Audiences in Charleston this Saturday may be in for an even more interesting and exciting show.
It’s a new day
The biggest story in wrestling this year, and perhaps one of the biggest in all of entertainment media, is the retirement of WWE chairman Vince McMahon. McMahon bought the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation from his father in 1982, shortening the name to World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and ushering in the ’80s wrestling boom with stars like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. McMahon served as CEO, chairman of the board and head of creative for two decades after making the purchase. But reports of inappropriate relationships with former employees and corporate funds used to pay for said parties to remain quiet have forced McMahon out of the company. WWE is now led by co-CEOs Nick Khan and Vince’s daughter Stephanie McMahon. Former wrestler Paul Levesque (known by his ring name Triple H) was appointed head of all creative. WWE is entering its first new era of creative and corporate leadership that will trickle down to how wrestlers are presented, how they are allowed to perform and who gets a bigger spotlight. The Charleston show this Saturday will be the first of its kind under the new regime.
Aristotelian poetics
Professional wrestling is live theater after years of lifting weights. It perfectly adheres to the tenets of good drama laid out in Aristotle’s classic text poetics. Aristotle references Plot, Character, Diction, Thought,
Drew McIntyre (above) and The Usos (right) are among the stars who will clash at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, Aug. 6 Spectacle and Song as the essential elements of good drama, and WWE shows feature all those elements in abundance. WWE shows are dripping with plot, whether it’s Sheamus and Drew McIntyre’s feud over who gets to be the next contender to the World Championship or Riddle looking for revenge against Seth Rollins for trying to end his career. And when it comes to characters, you’ll find few bigger than the likes of “The Empress of Tomorrow” Asuka or “The Ring General” Gunther. When it comes to spectacle and song, WWE can’t be touched. Each wrestler arrives to an impressive and catchy theme song that you will undoubtedly be humming on the way out. The Street Profits’ “Bring the Swag” is a must-have on any workout playlist. And the entire audience will be singing along with Shinsuke Nakamura’s “The Rising Sun” or Seth Rollins’ “Visionary.” It’s a blast to be involved in that singalong.
Part of the crowd
Attending a WWE event live is like going to the theater, but getting to be a part of the show. Crowd work is a big deal in professional wrestling. Wrestlers are not only aware of the audience, but draw from them and play to them. They’ll ask for the crowd to join in on a specific chant or clap to give their partner incentive to fight back. Crowds will hurl insults at dastardly bad guys or cheer their hearts out for their favorite heroes. The communal feeling of being in a wrestling crowd is infectious. If you’ve ever gone to the theater and wanted to scream at

one of the characters or boo a decision, then professional wrestling is for you.
Solid matches
A wrestling show is only as good as the wrestlers appearing and the matches they have, and Saturday night’s main event has an excellent card. Sheamus and Drew McIntyre are set to meet in a “Street Fight,” which means these two giants will collide with no rules and perhaps a few broken tables. The RAW Women’s Champion Bianca Belair will defend her title against Asuka, Becky Lynch and Carmella in a four-way match that should be amazing. The Street Profits will try to dethrone the Tag Team Champions, The Usos. Gunther will defend his Intercontinental Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura. There will also be matches featuring AJ Styles, Finn Balor, Bobby Lashley, Dolph Ziggler, Liv Morgan, Seth Rollins, Natalya and Riddle. It’s a show full of some of the biggest stars in WWE today. Tickets are still available and start as low as $20. If you’re a wrestling fan or are interested in seeing what all the fuss is about, now’s your chance to join the crowd for a WWE live show. It’s an experience like no other.

A technical marvel, Beyond Van Gogh uses projections and world-class animation to bring the works of the acclaimed painter to life CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15
perity, one must have a temperament different from mine. I’ll never do what I could have and ought to have wanted and pursued. While I clearly sense the value and originality and superiority of Delacroix, of Millet, for example, then I make a point of telling myself, yes I am something, I can do something.” Curtat said of this and other inspirational quotes from the letters: “Art is all about finding solutions and there is a real faith in the power of art when you read his words.” Guests next walk through a waterfall of images, shapes, colors and brushstrokes with Van Gogh’s face superimposed in the background. The effect cascades down the walls and under the walking feet of patrons. The visual is striking and can be disorienting, but is meant to acclimate the viewer to what they will see in the final leg of the exhibit. A large room with three center pillars, as well as bean bag chairs and benches, is the final destination. The walls, floor and pillars are alive with color, motion and imagery as, on a thirty-five minute loop, the world of Van Gogh’s art comes to life. Beautiful orchestrations play alongside the images, ranging from classical music to The Beatle’s “Here Comes the Sun.” Voices in French, English and Dutch (the three languages Van Gogh wrote in) recite quotes from his correspondence and contextualize the works that burst to life on all the surfaces. In one such section, “The Almond Blossom,” is accompanied by narration about Theo’s decision to name his child after his brother. Van Gogh’s work is illustrated not just through projection of the images, but through animation. Flower petals explode out of paintings and under the feet of patrons. The waves of an ocean gently flow. The wind of “Starry Night” breezes across the walls.
“
To succeed, to have lasting prosperity, one must have a temperament different from mine. ” —Van Gogh
“The animation follows the evolution of his paintings,” Curtat said. “So the first phase doesn’t move all that much because his paintings don’t move. But as you go through his work, movement is all over the place with the texture and the brush strokes. It’s all about the energy.” Some of these scenes are dedicated to one work in particular, like “Starry Night,” which overtakes the entirety of the large room. But other sections are collections of Van Gogh’s works. A collage of portraits of local townspeople challenges the idea of the painter as a “desperate loner.” A compilation of self portraits put Van Gogh’s sense of self into perspective, especially when compared to the actual photograph of a young Van Gogh that begins the loop. It’s all quite striking—a truly unique way to experience not just art, but the life journey of one artist in particular. “It’s all about finding ways for these experiences to be useful,” Curtat said. “It’s not just about the entertainment. It brings something to the table. It connects audiences with experiences maybe they wouldn’t have or to a world that maybe they thought they had very little to do with. This is about showing that a 19th century artist is still relevant for a 21st century life. He’s still inspiring. He’s still strong in his message and in his art.” Beyond Van Gogh is on display at the Charleston Area Convention Center until September 4. Weems Ramen slings homemade noodles on the peninsula

While everyone else learned how to make sourdough during the pandemic, Weems Pennington taught himself how to make ramen noodles from scratch. Pennington’s affinity for Asian flavors began when he worked in the kitchen at Jack of Cups Saloon on Folly Beach while attending the College of Charleston from 2013-2017. One year after graduating, he moved to England where he continued to experiment in the kitchen, namely with Indian cuisine. “I lived next door to an Indian market, and I would buy stuff then go watch YouTube videos of people cooking Indian food and try to make it myself,” Pennington said. “I was learning how to cook more so creatively rather than in a kitchen where someone is telling you how to do everything and you’re just kind of replicating it.” While Pennington has plenty of experience cooking in a restaurant setting, he does not consider himself a trained chef, but more of a serial hobbyist. Before he made ramen, he went through a phase of brewing beer. The process of brewing beer involves precise measurements and science, but creativity comes into play with the flavors. Pennington gravitated toward making ramen because it was a similar mix of experimentation with the broth and exactness with the noodles. “The part that I was really wanting
to do was the noodle-making side of it,” Pennington said about his shift to ramen. “This seems cool. It’s something that is apparently hard to do, so I bought a hand crank noodle maker, and I kind of still use it today.” Pennington explained that traditional ramen noodles are made with water, flour, salt and alkaline solution. Sometimes eggs are added to the dough, but Pennington omits them so the noodles are vegan. It may sound simple, but the self-taught chef has a notebook filled with failed recipes to prove that it is not. “I’ve had some crazy methods to get the dough to form,” Pennington added. “When I was making it for myself, I would put it in a plastic bag, then in a paper bag, and while I was doing other stuff I would put it under my
feet and stomp on it to form it into a sheet.” Rest assured the ramen aficionado would never use this method when serving it to other people, plus he has an electric sheeter to handle most of the grunt work now. Once the ramen is formed into a sheet, he uses a pasta machine to cut the noodles. While the noodles are a more precise and scientific process, Pennington enjoys flexing his creativity in the broths. The flavors at Weems Ramen pop-ups vary every week, but he always has three staple recipes to fall back on. One of the flavors Pennington has been making since the beginning also happens to be the most popular flavor thus far: garlic miso. “It’s salty and the consistency of it is thicker. It’s savory and kind of sweet,” Pennington said. “I usually make it with a good bit of confit garlic and there’s the option to make it spicy with chili oil and garlic and chopped pepper mixture soaking in oil.” The garlic miso ramen is topped with seasonal local mushrooms, greens, plenty of green onions and furikake (a mixture of sesame seeds, dried seaweed, herbs, fish flakes and salt). There is also the option to add a soy and mirin (rice wine) marinated egg to the mix. Without the egg on top, all of Weems Ramen’s creations are vegan by default. Meat is often used as the base of ramen CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

Koky Lopez’s go-to spirit is rum because it reminds her of home in Puerto Rico
Brasserie la Banque’s Koky Lòpez talks bartending By Michael Pham Though Koky Lòpez holds the title of bar manager at Bar Vauté and Brasserie la Banque, she’s been making drinks since she was in her early teens. She started working in hospitality at a young age with her parents’ catering business in Puerto Rico. Some days, when they were short staffed, Lòpez said, she would help serve the guests beer and wine at the age of 12 or 13. “I guess it’s not illegal?” she said. “I wasn’t consuming it, only serving.” Her introduction to bartending and mixology, though, came from her grandmother. Lòpez’s grandma was known in the town of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, for her coquito, a coconut rum drink equivalent to eggnog: “It doesn’t have egg or whiskey. It’s coconut, coconut cream and rum, rum, rum,” said Lòpez. “For Christmas, we would have this line of production for a big feast, and when it came time for her to go, ‘Okay, so this is how you made the pasteles,’ she handed my sister the recipe,” Lòpez said. “She handed me the recipe for coquito, which was always the joke in the family: ‘You made me a bartender. You were to blame!’ ” The coquito recipe was her starting point in bartending. From there, she learned to make sangria, she said. And in college,
making drinks that young stuck with her. “I just have that hospitality built into me,” she said.” And I always wanted to bring a product that not only I was proud of, but would make my family proud. That’s how I ended up in this industry,” she said. In February, she took full reign of the bar program. Prior to her time with Brasserie and Bar Vauté, Lòpez worked and consulted with places like the former Renaissance Hotel (which brought her to Charleston in 2016), Felix and Indaco. When the pandemic hit, Lòpez flew back to Puerto Rico after being furloughed, so she could be with her family, but came back after eight months to help open Neon Tiger and eventually Brasserie la Banque and Bar Vauté. Lòpez studied ESL (English as a second language) education and criminology in college. Though she’s been behind the bar for 22 years, she still gets to teach. In Puerto Rico, there are social responsibility laws that require bartenders to go to trade school for at least two years before they’re allowed behind the bar. broths to impart richness, but since Pennington is vegetarian, he wanted to create a broth satisfying enough for carnivores and vegans alike. Pennington uses olive oil in place of animal fat and utilizes aromatics like kombu (seaweed), mushrooms, onions and garlic to build a flavor base. Other popular flavors of Weems Ramen include shoyu and tantanmen. The shoyu ramen utilizes four or five different soy sauces (light soy sauce, light soy sauce with mushrooms and kombu, mushroom dark soy sauce, aged soy sauce, sweetened soy sauce) to achieve a balance of salt content and umami. Tantanmen is a Japanese take on Dan Dan noodles and Pennington’s creation was further inspired by the mapo tofu at Xiao Bao Biscuit. The result is a spicy sichuan broth with tofu, napa cabbage, green onion, chili oil and optional marinated egg. “I still want it to be ramen and I don’t want it to be viewed as vegetarian ramen,” Pennington explained. “I hope people would come in and just say ‘Wow, that’s really good ramen,’ and not worry about the fact that it’s vegetarian.”
rience behind the bar and background in education provided her with the tools to help educate bartenders in Puerto Rico and the U.S., where she’s consulted and helped open more than 30 restaurants. Bartenders need to mix, master and create cocktails, but what really makes a good bartender? Lòpez believes personality is the key to success. The stigma of the grumpy bartender, like the angry chef, is “so passé,” she said. “You know, so it’s not that much about knowing recipes and being this knowit-all,” Lòpez added. “If you know your flavor profile, and you have the tact of dealing with people? Successful. I will have a bunch of my students and know that they are learning these recipes, and they’re trying their best, but personalitywise, not gonna roll.” The bond between bartender and customer is the most important aspect to bartending. For Lòpez, it’s what she enjoys the most: “I really, really love my interaction with the guests,” she said. “I really do. I learn so much from other people’s life stories and it’s always really cool to be on that side of the bar where you have this protected environment but people get so intimately real with you. They want to tell you their story. “I feel like that’s where the soul of a bartender is.”
To get your hands on Weems Ramen, head to Cutty’s at 227 St. Philips St. Mondays and Thursdays from 6-9:30 p.m. or Estadio at 122 Spring St. on Sundays from 6-9 p.m. Before you go, you can get a sneak peek of the menu on Instagram @weemsramen.

Free Will Astrology ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries poet Ada Limón advises us to notice and love “the music of the world.” She says that praising and giving attention to the good things “are as important and necessary as witnessing and naming and holding the grief and sorrow that comes with being alive.” This is always a crucial principle to keep in mind, but it will be extra essential for you in the coming weeks. Your ability to attract the influences and resources you need most will thrive if you focus on and celebrate the music of the world. PS: I encourage you to sing more than usual, too. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Here’s my hope for you in the coming months: You will cultivate a specialty for connecting people and situations that need to be affiliated but aren’t yet. You will regard your flair for blending as a gift you offer generously. Can you picture yourself doing that? I think it will be fun and will also benefit you in unexpected ways. So here’s my proposed plan: Conspire to heal fragmentation and schisms. Unite heavenly and earthly things. Keep the far side and the near side in touch with each other. Never let the past forget about the future, and vice versa. One more thing, Taurus: Be gleefully imaginative as you mix and conjoin and combine. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In a play by Gemini philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, a character says, “Hell is other people.” What did he mean by that? One interpretation is that our fellow humans always judge us, and their judgments rarely align with who we really are and who we imagine ourselves to be. Here’s my solution for that problem: Choose allies and companions whose views of you match your own. Is that so hard? I suspect it will be easier than usual for you in the coming months, Gemini. Take advantage of life’s natural tendency to connect you with cohorts who appreciate you. Be picky as you avoid the hell of other people. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The people most likely to succeed as entrepreneurs are those with a high degree of analytical intelligence. Right? Well, it’s more complicated than that. Reasoning ability and problem-solving skills are key skills, but not as important as emotional intelligence: the power to understand and manage feelings. I mention this, Cancerian, because the coming months will be a favorable time to advance your ambitions by enhancing and expressing your emotional intelligence. Here’s some reading to foster your powers: 1. tinyurl.com/EmotionSmarts 2. tinyurl.com/SmartFeeler 3. tinyurl.com/WiseFeeler 4. tinyurl.com/BrightFeeler LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the coming weeks, Leo, I urge you to always be confident that YOU ARE THE PARTY! Everywhere you go, bring the spirits of fun and revelry. Be educationally entertaining and entertainingly educational. Amuse yourself by making life more interesting for everyone. At the same time, be kind and humble, never arrogant or insensitive. A vital part of your assignment is to nourish and inspire others with your radiance and charm. That formula will ensure you get everything you need. I foresee bounty flowing your way! PS: Regularly reward your admirers and followers with your magnanimous Chesire-cat grin. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In my Astrological Book of Life, here’s what I have inscribed about Virgos: You may not always find the perfect solution, but you are skilled at finding the best solution available. This will be an especially valuable knack in the coming weeks, both for yourself and others. I trust you will scan for practical but compassionate answers, even if they are partial. And I hope you will address at least some of everyone’s needs, even if no one is completely satisfied. You can be the master of creative compromise that we all need. Thanks in advance for your excellent service! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Everyone knows that “balance” is a keyword for you Librans. However, there are many interpretations of what balance entails. Here’s how I define it for you during the coming weeks: 1. an openness to consider several

different ways to capitalize on an opportunity, but to ultimately choose just one way; 2. the ability to see and understand all sides of every story, while also knowing that for pragmatism’s sake you must endorse a single version of the story; 3. the capacity to be both constructively critical and supportively sympathetic; 4. the facility to be welcoming and inviting while still maintaining healthy boundaries. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Life is enchanting for me because I have so much control over what I think,” my Scorpio friend Daria told me. “If I decide to flatter myself with comments about how attractive I am, I can do just that. If I would like to imagine a good fairy visiting me while I sleep and giving me a dream of having an orgasm with my lover while we fly over the Serengeti Plains, I can.” I asked her about the times when worries gush forth unbidden from her subconscious mind and disturb her joy. She said, “I simply picture myself shoving those worries in a hole in the ground and blowing them up with an exploding rose.” I bring Daria’s mind-management expertise to your attention, Scorpio, because the coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to raise your mastery over what you think. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): People might impatiently advise you to relax and settle down. Others might tell you to stop dreaming such big visions and formulating such adventurous plans. Still others might give you the side-eye because they imagine you are having too much fun and brainstorming too wildly and laughing too loudly. If you receive messages like those, give the complainers a copy of this horoscope. It will tell them that YOU WILL NOT COMPLY WITH ANY INHIBITING DIRECTIVES. Your astrologer, me, authorizes you to be as vast and venturesome and enterprising and spontaneous as you dare. In doing so, I am speaking on behalf of the cosmic rhythms. Your plucky audacity has been heavenly ordained. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In accordance with astrological omens, I hereby authorize you to worry, worry, and worry some more. Stew and simmer and ferment as you weigh all the options and mull the correct actions. But when the time is right, end your fretting with crisp decisiveness. Shake off any residual doubt that still clings to you. And then undertake robust action to transform the situation that provoked your righteous brooding. In my astrological opinion, what I have just described is your best plan for success in the coming days. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “I was looking for a love unlike my parents’ love or my sister’s love or the love on a foreign kitchen floor,” writes Rebecca Dinerstein Knight in her novel The Sunlit Night. “I wanted to forgive my mother and father for their misery and find myself a light man who lived buoyantly and to be both his light and his dark.” I offer you her thoughts, Aquarius, in the hope of inspiring you to expand and deepen your ideas about the love you want. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to revise and reinvigorate your definitions of intimacy and togetherness. You will have extra power to see new truths about how best to create maximum synergy and symbiosis. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Even raw and messy emotions can be understood as a form of light, crackling and bursting with energy,” writes Jungian psychoanalyst Clarissa Pinkola Estés. For example, “We can use the light of rage in a positive way, in order to see into places we cannot usually see.” Likewise, confusion might be a healthy sign that a long-held misunderstanding is dissolving. Disappointment may herald the demise of an unrealistic expectation. So let’s unleash a big cheer for raw and messy emotions, Pisces! I suspect they will soon be your gateway to clarity and renewal.

Femme Fest finds success, struggles in third year By Vincent Harris About three years ago, Taylor Czerwinski did something in Charleston that had never been done before. Czerwinski, the executive director of 9to5 Magazine, a local arts and music publication, put on an all-female music festival, the first annual Femme Fest. It wasn’t just about the musicians, either. All of the vendors at the festival were female- or nonbinary-owned businesses. The first Femme Fest, which took place at Tobin’s Market downtown, featured musicians Hannah Wicklund, Babe Club, Maya Gold, Grace McNally, Entit and Anna Crosby. The event was a hit, and spawned a second edition, which went down at Tradesman Brewing Company and again featured Babe Club, Maya Gold and Anna Crosby, along with Shelby LaFaye McDaniel, Jordan Igoe, Julie Slonecki, Aggie Flores & the Wildflowers and Brooke & Rattle. This year’s edition of Femme Fest will be the Czerwinski File photos by Ruta Smith; Ashley Rose Stanol biggest yet, taking place at the recently reopened Femme Fest spotlights women and nonbinary musicians Music Farm, with plenty of space for musicians and vendors. Charles Carmody, the Music Farm’s Charleston market director, and artisans in Charleston in hopes to tip the scales for underrepresented creatives said that when his team took over the Music Farm last April, bringing Femme Fest to the venue was a no-brainer. “One of the things we She Returns talked about for a long From War time was underrepresentation of women in music,” Now that it’s become Carmody said, “and as we were going through a yearly festival, it the list of things that we showed me that the wanted to do, one of them was an all-female festival. The lineup features Rose Hotel, Hrlum & The Renaissance, She Returns From War, LaFaye, Babe Club and Pip The Pansy. “We created a wish list,” Carmody said of booking the festival. “And we kind of honed in on highlighting local and regional artists.

The CofC-born band Sandcastle leans heavily into 1990s alt-rock on the debut LP, San Diego Wild Animal Park
Roommates-turned-rock-band Sandcastle releases new LP Guitarists Remy Clark and Justin Garrison were roommates at the College of Charleston in 2017 when they planted the seeds for a band that would become Sandcastle, a local four-piece that recently dropped a new album on July 1 called San Diego Wild Animal Park. The group is a swirl of noisy guitars and laconic vocals, liberally riffing on ’80s indie and ’90s alt-rock with touches of post-punk, surf or psych-pop depending on the mood. The two roommates quickly bonded over their shared love of loud and brash indie rock, Clark told City Paper.
“We would just sit around playing covers and stuff all day,” Clark recalled, citing The Strokes as a frequent selection alongside cherished favorites like Pavement, Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies. And although Clark had already tried his hand at songwriting before, the idea of actually becoming a band was a gradual one. The two first met bassist Josh Butler and then drummer John Cantor and started jamming together as Sandcastle in 2019, developing ideas and trying to get a CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

And so from there we worked together to put this year’s lineup together. We wanted a mix of genres, a mix of ages. We wanted to try to make it diverse, and here’s where we landed.” As great as it is that Femme Fest is at the Music Farm, though, there was a bit of a struggle involved when it came to creating the lineup, a struggle which points to the problem that the festival was created to address. “Now that it’s become a yearly festival, it showed me that the Charleston area lacks a lot of female represented artists,” Czerwinski said. “In terms of just the musicians, not necessarily the vendors. It’s hard to find more new local bands that are all female run or fronted — we’ve had Maya Gold on twice, Babe Club will be playing three years out of three years — it’s kind of hard to find more artists. We’re hoping through the festival that that will encourage more female artists to try and come forward and give them the opportunity to find representation.” Senior marketing manager of Music Farm Bonny Wolfe added, “I had friends in college who were females who were artists and they just felt like they didn’t have stages to perform on, so they didn’t develop their musical careers. Hopefully, this just tells the city and our area that we are ready and willing to be presenting more female and nonbinary artists.” Hunter Park, the singer and songwriter for She Returns From War, said that she’s excited to play at Femme Fest and that it’s important to support events like it. “I think it’s important to note that with this festival it’s like starting from a grassroots kind of place,” Park said. “I think it’s really important to recognize that there really is a sense of community who wants to support [it] and it’s really important to celebrate that.” Czerwinski added that she’s hopeful that having repeatedly successful editions of Femme Fest will widen the pool of femaleidentifying and nonbinary musicians. “My dream with Femme Fest,” she said,

sense of the music they wanted to make. Clark, who originally was the primary songwriter until things became more collaborative, said the band initially had a jammier, harder rock instrumental approach in the early days and now the group leans toward a “grungier, more punk” side of the sound spectrum. That full range is evident on San Diego Wild Animal Park. Instrumentals like the title track and “Scurvy” hint at that earlier identity, while tracks like “Day by Day” and “Lucky Cigarette” are immersive, hazy alt-pop reminiscent of Brooklyn dream rockers Beach Fossils. And, of course, there’s more straight-ahead tracks like the

Local alt-rock duo Babe Club (above) just landed a clip of its latest song “Lazy Lover” in a Taco Bell TV ad “has always been that with more regional representation and the consistency of creating an event that’s going to be more well-known, it could easily reach more artists outside of Charleston and maybe even outside of South Carolina. The new album represents a transitional phase for the group, which hopes to have an EP out later this year documenting a different sound. “We got pretty brutally nitpicky against ourselves and might have gotten a little overly detail-oriented,” Clark admitted about the Animal Park recording. The new material is less about the instrumental showcases and more about the attitude and atmosphere that Sandcastle’s altrock influences have exuded over the years. “We’re starting to embrace [those influences] a lot more on these new songs,” Clark said. —Kyle Petersen
