Local fulfillment center Nice Commerce fine-tunes the shipping process for 50 busi nesses in the Charleston area. “A lot of people are taking losses in their product costs just to get the goods from Asia over to us,” Civitella said. “So it’s a really big issue where it’s not just the price, but it’s been time in transit. If you’re ship ping anything to the Port of Los Angeles, you were backed up — luckily, Charleston doesn’t have that issue — but it’s still been a nightmare for the past two years.”

An April study of 97 businesses by Lowcountry Local First identified prob lems getting products and supplies as the top commerce challenge over other issues such as health insurance, hiring and rent costs. On a larger scale, 81% of Americans named supply chain issues as a significant source of stress, according to the American Psychological Association’s March 2022 Stress in America report. “Every brand is, behind the scenes, taking on that stress because it’s this all-encom passing thing between supply chain and inflation and gas,” said Phil Civitella, presi dent of North Charleston fulfillment service company Nice Commerce.

Packed ports “Consumers are buying more than ever before,” said Liz Crumley, communica tions manager at South Carolina Ports Authority. “All the buying drove up imports across the U.S.” Imports to S.C. ports in fiscal year 2022 were up 22% compared to 2021, Crumley said. In March and April this year, S.C. Ports Authority had a record number of around 30 ships in its Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal and Leatherman Terminal. This queue cleared by early May. “It was unusual what happened and representative of what’s happening in the broader supply chain,” she said. “In response to the fact that we were having record cargo volumes, we’ve hired 150 people since last July. Those [positions] are in operations — people out on the terminal who are in charge of moving containers and working cranes, which is really the core of what we do.”

Don’t try to scale up super quick. Don’t overburden yourself.”
News 08.17.2022
While the rest of the coast is pretty backed up, Charleston’s port is fluid, Crumley said. “And that can always change. The pandemic is not over. Supply chain challenges are ongoing.”
She said it’s been a hard year or so for everyone in the supply chain — port workers, truck drivers, warehouse workers. “We go to the grocery store and grab something off the shelf or go to Target,” she said. “You just start expecting your items to be here, but so many people are working behind the scenes to make that happen.”
Spiking prices
Nice Commerce uses a lot of corrugated as well as recycled craft paper in order to fulfill products and get them out the door. It used to order mass quantities of packing materials with a week lead-time, and nowa days it orders four to six weeks in advance. “The hail storm never stops,” Civitella said. “[Businesses] need to know 12 months in advance what they’re doing, instead of it being a four- to five- to six-month [foresite]. Everything’s doubled.” Transit costs are killer, Civitella said. “The average cost to ship to customers has gone up 25-30% in the past couple years.”

Winter Haven, Florida, resident Mike Partain, who was born on the base and drank the water, has operated a 19,000-member Facebook group seeking health care justice. “It was a bittersweet moment to see President Biden sign this bill into law, to wit ness history,” said Partain, who attended the event. “As he signed, I thought about those who didn’t make it and are no longer with us. I wondered will the Navy finally come clean and do the right thing for our Navy and Marine service members and their families? We have reached our final chapter in this 25-plus year fight for justice.” Retired Marine Master Sgt. Jerry Ensminger, a North Carolina resident who stood behind Biden during the Aug. 10 ceremony, added, “It’s about time this happened. Congress needs to look at and modify the legal immunities DOD [the Department of Defense] enjoys. Their nonsensical application of those immunities constitutes an abuse of power!”

His wife also died of breast cancer. His daughter suffers from an inflammatory bowel disease that compro mises her body’s immune system. They all drank the Lejeune water.
Another person featured in past cov erage, Rose Ann Boxx of James Island, died in May. Last year, she described how her brother’s death from colon cancer haunted her. They lived on the base in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Boxx got breast cancer in 2016.
Last week, President Joe Biden signed the bipartisan Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act, also known as the PACT Act. While much of the media focus on the new law was on toxic burn pits that injured veterans serving in wars overseas, the new law includes help for people at Camp Lejeune who drank or bathed in water contaminated by toxic chemicals, such as gasoline and jet fuel, that leaked into wells around the base. As of Aug. 12, 274,981 people registered with the Marine Corps to receive notifications about the poisonous drinking water at Camp Lejeune. More than 7,700 live in South Carolina. Those who once lived on the base were elated with news that Biden signed the law.

Supply chain issues have gone side by side with a labor shortage, which has been a challenge for Celadon. “We’ve needed additional helping hands,” she said. “If you don’t have enough people to help with heavy lifting, your warehouse can get crowded really quickly.” Charleston has a shortage of warehouse space, she said. And when warehouses run out of space, there’s not a lot of choices — busi nesses have to have sales to combat the pileup.
Local makers are already competing with larger scale producers, Duffy said, so inflated pricing for packaging sets them way back when it comes to competing price wise. What artisans end up doing is using alternative packaging, which often means using plastic. For a sustainably focused store, that’s a major tradeoff, and a tempo rary one, she hopes. Duffy also noticed that the alternative packaging confuses customers as sometimes it prevents them from seeing the item they’re purchasing. “It’s tricky,” she said. “People don’t know what’s what, so we have to explain. Quite frankly, [items are] just harder to sell, when before they were very easy to sell.”
Brand confusion? Police confronted a man sitting on a West Ashley motel stairwell with open containers on Aug. 5. He consented to be searched, saying he had “ganja” on him — a nickname for marijuana. He may not know that though because the substance he had on him was a white rock-like substance. He was arrested either way.
Mom to the rescue Officers responded to an Aug. 5 to a call about a suspicious vehicle parked in a West Ashley lot. Officers saw two kids sitting in a white Mercedes with the windows down smoking a blunt next to two empty beers and a can of Twisted Tea. Officers notified their parents. One of the boy’s mom vouched for them and took them home.
sourced items used to package and present products on shelves. “For example, [the artisans] just can’t seem to source glass bottles anymore or glass containers,” said co-owner Medea Duffy. “And sometimes if they are able to find them, they’re astronomically priced or they take forever to arrive. So that’s been a huge issue.”
Warehouses out of whack After working with Celadon Home fur niture store for 14 years, vice president Rebecca Hawkins has experienced her share of supply chain woes, but in the last two years, issues amplified. “Early on, it was the inability to get things and having your money tied up and things were just taking a really long time to come,” Hawkins said. “Now on the flip side, so many of our vendors say they are getting in so many things that they’ve had on order forever. So now we’re getting everything at once.”

Hawkins added, “It’s definitely been a wild couple of years.”
SPONSORED BY Officers responded to an Aug. 3 call from a West Ashley Quik Stop employee who reported a man stole $42 worth of canned oysters and a bottle of syrup the previous day. The guy ended up getting away. Don’t even want to know what he made for dinner.
Not fast enough An officer on patrol on Mary Street downtown Aug. 9 saw a man ditch his Big Gulp cup as he walked up. The man admitted the cup was filled with booze but said he didn’t know about the open container law. The officer reported the man did indeed have previous open container charges and added another charge for good measure.
Between Celadon’s warehouse team and buying team, it takes roughly 50% of the time to manage being reactive to inventory levels, Hawkins said. Often, having a sale is the only solution to having too much of one thing. “I think you’re seeing that on a larger scale at Target and Walmart, and that’s why they’ve been having huge sales, because everything’s coming in at once,” Hawkins said. Warehousing has been Celadon’s greatest challenge, according to Hawkins. “We’ve had a lot of our warehouse team for a long time but with so many units coming in increased volume, we’ve been lucky enough that so many people have moved to this area that we’ve been able to sell a lot of merchandise.”

Now that the current president has spent a relatively relaxing week in the Lowcountry, let’s reflect on what he’s accomplished — much of it in the last few weeks. Jobs. During the Biden administration, more Americans are at work than ever before thanks to a return of about 8 million jobs in recent months. Much of this is due to a nation emerging from a pandemic, which Biden helped to boost with the $1.9 trillion American Recovery Act. The unemployment rate is at a record low of 3.5%. Infrastructure. Passage of a 2021 bill to invest $550 billion in roads, bridges, airports, rural broadband, clean water and more will result this year in 65,000 miles of roadwork and repairs to 1,500 bridges across the country. This investment in America is creating tens of thousands of jobs. Innovation. Biden last week signed a $53 billion bill to invest in manufacturing of semiconductor computer chips in America — another smart strategy to build the country’s financial and manufacturing backbone. Veterans’ health care. Biden also signed the largest recent expansion of health care for the nation’s veterans, keeping a personal commitment he’s had for years. The measure includes help for thousands of South Carolina victims of toxic water contamination when they and their families were stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Climate, health investments. Biden also signed the Inflation Reduction Act, a scaled-down version of his Build Back Better agenda, that makes huge investments in battling climate change as well as expands health care for Americans who need it. The law reaps $265 billion in prescription drug savings for seniors by allowing Medicare to negotiate on prices with drug companies. Biden’s record of pushing America forward is clear. Let’s not let it be overshadowed by the political shenanigans. Unfortunately, too many people aren’t confronting the reality of his accomplishments for two reasons: Party tribalism and communications laziness. Too many Republicans, particularly vitriolic members of Congress, won’t look at the big picture. And Democrats seem to be doing a particularly lousy job in communicating Biden’s accomplishments. Rather, the media just want to talk about the horse race or whatever nonsense Trump is doing, neither of which help spread the news about what’s really going on. Thanks for the visit, Mr. President. Now, get back to doing more for the country.

charlestoncitypaper .com 7 he myriad differences between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump couldn’t be more striking: Biden’s fit; Trump’s fat. Biden speaks with candor. Trump’s truthfulness continues to be an issue. Biden focuses on building a better future. Trump remains obsessed with the past. In just 19 months as president, Biden has scored huge wins which should not be overlooked. Yet he often seems to play second fiddle in too many people’s minds. But that may be changing, as CNN noted in recent days: “Suddenly, images of Biden as a feeble septuagenarian atop a mismanaged White House have given way to those of an experienced leader, smiling behind aviator sunglasses, whose battle-tested team has delivered on a range of national priorities. A winning streak does that for you.”

Hear, hear. This is a bipartisan proposal for Republicans and Democrats who want to protect free speech and to reduce pressure on citizens. They should get behind it now.
EFF explains the importance of states like South Carolina passing such a measure, which has been intro duced but not acted on in the past: “These laws apply broadly to expression on matters of public concern, in any forum. They require plaintiffs to show they have a legiti mate case early on in litigation. If the defendant loses the anti-SLAPP motion, they have the right to an immediate appeal. And in cases where a judge finds that a defendant has been the victim of a SLAPP, that defendant is entitled to an award of costs and attorney fees.”
In the first instance, a 2016 lawsuit by a developer over a Mount Pleasant project ended up being settled after citizens who commented on the process were subpoenaed. In the second, a Charleston County judge recently ruled the Charleston Animal Society did not defame a carriage company in 2017 by publishing videos of a fallen horse and saying it had “collapsed.” It took four years for the ruling to be issued, but the company has already appealed it.
In an essay pushing for an anti-SLAPP law in South Carolina, University of South Carolina journalism professor Eric Robinson wrote the state has provisions against frivolous lawsuits, but that’s different from a lawsuit filed to chill speech.
Protect free expression in S.C. from intimidation
In a 36-page order, Charleston County Master-in-Equity Mikell Scarborough ruled in May that “with the immense public interest in Charleston’s carriage horses and, specifi cally, the Big John [horse] incident, the video is a funda mental example of the type of public discourse protected by the First Amendment.”
By Andy Brack OPINION
“Protection of speech about public issues is an important First Amendment principle, and we should strengthen that protection by barring frivolous lawsuits that use the threat of litigation — and its inherent expenses and risks — to shut down legitimate discussion of public issues and controversies,” he said. “South Carolina should bolster its protections for free speech by passing an anti-SLAPP statute in the near future.”

So you attended a public meeting in your town and complained. Or consider the community advocacy organization that publishes a video about a fallen carriage horse in a con tinuing and long effort to get more humane treatment for working animals. In both cases, you’d probably figure their opinions were part of the public debate in the marketplace of ideas, pro tected by free speech rights in the U.S. Constitution that allow citizens to speak out, protest and publish information.
But in both instances, companies in South Carolina brought a special, cynical kind of lawsuit intended to chill debate by, in part, making people hire expensive lawyers to defendThey’rethemselves.calledSLAPP lawsuits, which stands for “Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation.” More than 30 states have laws that protect people from these lawsuits. South Carolina does not.
He’s right on the money.
EFF and more than 25 organizations from the American Civil Liberties Union and Public Participation Project to the National Right to Life Committee and National Taxpayers Union, have signed a letter pushing for stronger anti-SLAPP“Anti-SLAPPlegislation.lawsprotect the public from frivolous law suits that arise from speech on matters of public concern. These laws protect speakers by providing special proce dures for defendants to defeat weak or meritless claims. The stronger the statute, the more deterrence there is against filing SLAPP lawsuits.”

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is among groups around the country trying to limit SLAPP lawsuits like the two brought in South Carolina. “These lawsuits aren’t meant to win on the merits — they’re meant to put financial pressure on a defendant, thus quashing their constitutional rights,” the organization says.
This is a bipartisan proposal for Republicans and Democrats who want to protect free speech and to reduce pressure on citizens.

Delays and changes have increased the museum’s cost from $75 million to nearly $100 million, said City of Charleston spokesman Jack O’Toole. The city owns the building, and will lease it annually to the IAAM for $1.
The late Boston architect Henry Cobb conceived of the museum’s design. Windows in the long, narrow plain building are adorned inside and out with faux shutters and trim made from brown Ipe, a durable and dense Central and South American wood. African American

N ine core galleries, a special exhibit space and a gene alogy center in the International African American Museum (IAAM) are taking shape to present a sweeping story of the Africans’ forced migration to America.
The public will have to wait, however, until Jan. 21, 2023, to tour the museum being built on the site of Gadsden’s Wharf, a 19th century slave-trading port on the Cooper River. The museum was expected to be completed by March 2022, but then the opening was pushed back to this summer and delayed again.

Charleston City Council on Tuesday was expected to approve the latest in a series of construction changes that will raise the museum’s cost by an additional $338,000. The museum’s overall cost increased due to pandemic-related delays and changes in materials. Although council votes on the changes, the IAAM pays for them. The city pledged $12.5 million in accommodation taxes to pay for the museum’s design, engineering and archi tectural oversight. After the museum opens, O’Toole said, the city will maintain the museum’s African Ancestors Memorial Garden, an ethnobotanical garden with indigenous plants from West Africa, the Caribbean and the Lowcountry. When the IAAM opens, its story starts out side at two yet-to-be-finished black granite walls memorializing the more than 700 Africans who froze to death in 1806 at the wharf. The memorial walls fit within the concrete outline on the ground of the storage house where the enslaved people perished during an unexpected freeze. To represent them, a series of human figures will appear as if they are emerging from the ground. The black polished walls will bear a quote from the late Maya Angelou: “And still I rise.”
Currently, the museum has 27 employees and when it opens that number is expected to rise to 40, Matthews said. The museum’s staff makeup has been questioned by some who’ve said not enough local people have been“We’rehired.proud to be an organization that can recruit national talent as well as be an opportunity to help our community retain and develop local talent,” she said. “Our team is 42% native to the Lowcountry — and including local hires not originally from South Carolina, we are at 58%. Additionally, we have staff members who have been in our region for years and have come to and work for the museum, as well. We have a few team mem bers whose roles and expertise are remote, but currently all but two of our team members live in the Charleston area.”
charlestoncitypaper .com 11 the garden’s most recognizable local plant. Dr. Tonya M. Matthews, the museum’s president and chief executive officer, said during the museum’s planning, the city negotiated a construction budget through “a guaranteed maximum price process. … The project did bear [the] impact of unex pected pandemic-induced costs like most construction projects.” The museum’s cur rent operating cost also has been affected by the pandemic, she said. “We managed our budgets and expenditures carefully, and we continue to do so,” she said. After the opening, the operating budget is expected to range between $8 million to $10 million annually, Matthews said. The museum has received more than $100 million from state and local governments, companies, nonprofits and individuals. Last week, aerospace manufacturer The Boeing Company gave the museum its second $1 million donation. The money will provide free admission for underserved children. In a 2000 state-of-the-city address, then-mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. announced his desire to build the museum. The fol lowing year, a site across from the South Carolina Aquarium was selected. But three years later, plans changed, and the city paid $3.5 million for the Gadsden’s Wharf site. “Trauma and joy”
“The Burden We Carry? Critical Race Theory & The Role of Black Museums,” was the title of her presentation. During the tour with the City Paper, Matthews acknowledged the IAAM’s story about slavery will not be widely popular. “Museums are places where you are allowed to show up and admit you don’t know something,” she said. “When you are at a museum, you are learning,” she said. “An environment like this is really helpful for conversations like that.”
In fact, the long, narrow museum, sup ported 13 feet off the ground by 18 cylin drical pillars, appears to rise from the ground where the enslaved died. Understanding why the building was raised, Matthews said, blunts earlier criticism that the museum on paper is not visually striking. “The design of this building is what gave rise to the African Ancestors Memorial Garden that sits under it,” she said as she gave the City Paper an exclusive tour of the museum. Art installations in the garden, she explained, cover ground which essentially has become the museum’s first floor, a design she inherited when she was selected in March 2021 to lead the museum. Placing the museum at the former slave port, Matthews said, illustrates “the greatest gifts African Americans have to give is our ability to simultaneously hold the sensation of trauma and joy.”
Ironically, a museum that tells the story of slavery is in a neighborhood where Black Charlestonians have been pushed out by gentrification. “I am still learning that con versation as a newcomer to Charleston,” said Matthews, a Washington, D.C., native. The entire city has experienced demographic shifts, she said. “If the museum can have some impact it would be to shed context around these conversations in a way that helps us think about … what’s next,” she explained.
Galleries hold untold stories Under the museum, a wide staircase ascends into the center of the building’s skylight atrium and a glass front entrance. The stairs provide seating in a shaded amphitheaterlike setting for community events with a cool breeze from the river. At the building’s east end, overlooking the Cooper River, large exhibits in galleries are arranged by geography and culture. At the west end with a view of the Concord Street soccer field, gal leries are arranged chronologically. In addition to the memorial wall, another solemn presentation is at the building’s har borside in two small flanking mini galleries in the larger Atlantic Worlds Gallery. On the black walls of the Port of Departure mini gallery are the names and ages of scores of young Africans, including Houa, 7, Lome, 14, and Halem, 22. They were among the captives who were freed after illegal slave ships were intercepted in the early to mid-1800s after many countries, including Britain and the United States, outlawed the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The names, ages and other details of the Africans became part of legal records that were later used to develop a slave trade database. In the opposing Port of Arrival mini gallery, black walls are covered with the Americanized names of captives, such as Solomon, Venus and Poor Man. “These names are a bit easier to come by from slave and plantation records,” Matthews said. “These are the simplest galleries, but the ones that say the most,” Matthews said. Three of the nine galleries will tell the stories of rice, culture and religion. Slavery is told through rice in the Carolina Gold Gallery. The Carolina Connections gallery displays scenes of modern South Carolina and other African American sites across the state. The Gullah Geechee Gallery holds a replica of a praise house with the sounds of a worship service recorded at Johns Island’s Moving Star Hall Praise House on River Road. At the museum’s west end, the staff in The Center for Family History will help visi tors trace their genealogy. The staff will also direct visitors to DNA testing so they can use science to find their African roots. As she stepped around construction debris, Matthews said the museum will enter into partnerships with other museums and historic sites to not be in competition with them. “Even in a museum as large as this one, we can only tell part of the story,” she said.

Why bees are key in Lowcountrythe
Rūta Smith Apis Mercantile founders Liam Becker (left) and John Berdux (middle) started beekeeping as a hobby while attending College of Charleston
Honey bees and local apiaries play an important role in regional agriculture and economy, Berdux said. “Working with local producers and providers, not only are we reducing food miles but we’re also keeping money in the local economy, which we think is important,” he added. Ben Powell, program coordinator for Clemson research center’s apiculture and pollinator program, agrees: “The most important thing is, by supporting local bee keepers by buying their products, you’re sup porting local agriculture and ag-enterprises.”
Honey in cuisine
The Charleston Community Bee Gardens in West Ashley research bee colonies’ impact on local agriculture and allows resi dents space to safely keep bees. Local beekeeper and bar manager at 39 Rue de Jean Michael Moore has kept hives around the city in various locations. As part of a project with bar manager Elias Wolfe of Red Drum in Mount Pleasant, the two maintain apiaries at the rooftop of local businesses and commercial locations. The goal, Moore said, is to increase the pollina tion on the peninsula and Charleston area.
When honey comes into contact with moisture, Powell added, it forms a thin layer of hydrogen peroxide that is used to treat wounds and create a sterile envi ronment. That reaction also soothes sore throats, heals diabetic wounds, improves digestive issues and reduces seasonal allergies. The idea, Berdux said, is that you’re consuming the natural pollen that’s affecting your allergies. Bills said, “When my kids and I go out in the field, and we’re doing stuff and we get stung, or get a small cut, we just put honey onHoneyit.” is used to treat sea turtle wounds at the South Carolina Aquarium. Some hospitals carry “medihoney,” a sterile honey that creates a “natural healing environ ment” because of the chemical reaction, according to Bills. For those interested in beekeeping at home, there are resources to help get started like the Charleston Area Beekeeping Association or Bill’s apiary education pro gram at R and R Acres. “You need to be patient and just look at them to see if you can figure out what they’re trying to do,” Bills said. “The joke I tell people often is, ‘It’s 100,000 women in one box. You’re not going to tell them what to do.’ ”
R Acres, an apiary and homestead in Berkeley County, trans ports bees to support not only her farm, but other farms in the area as well. “Having the bees definitely helps,” she said. “We’ve put some of our bees at some local farms in the area … just so that they could have better crops this year.” John Berdux, co-founder of James Islandbased honey company Apis Mercantile, added, “The pollination that they naturally do is responsible for a lot of the food that we ultimately end up consuming.”
Health & honey Honey provides a myriad of health benefits. According to Powell, honey is a “very healthy product. It is pro duced naturally without any significant damage to the landscape.”
By Michael Pham Apiculture, or beekeeping, plays an impor tant role in the Lowcountry’s rich agricul tural industry for its help in natural growth and production for local farms. Bees are easier to transport than other pollinators, such as butterflies or moths, allowing bee keepers to move hives and colonies to areas in need of Rebeccapollination.BillsofRand
Restaurants, like Harold’s Cabin, with a rooftop beehive mainted by Moore and Wolfe, receive a free amount of honey, with options to buy more honey at a wholesale price. Harold’s Cabin has housed several bee colonies to help pollinate the vegetables in the rooftop garden. “We need more bees in our world,” said Harold’s Cabin co-owner John Schumacher, “especially in urban areas. We’ve always had rooftop gardens and it was just a natural fit. Whatever the bees produce, you know, there’s nothing like having something that’s produced on your own property that you’re able to use and utilize.”

While bees help pollinate other crops and foods, they produce a food product them selves: honey, which has many culinary uses including as a sweetener in coffee or tea, an ingredient in baked goods or as condiments on sweet and savory dishes. According to Berdux and Apis Mercantile co-founder Liam Becker, honey is also very much like wine. A honey’s color and flavor depends on the time of year, geographical location and type of nectar-producing flower, saidOrangeBecker.blossom honey, for example, has an orange hue with a citrus and acidic flavor on the backend, while the Van Morrisonfavored Tupelo honey has an amber color with a buttery and floral flavor. Wildflower honey, the most common variety, possesses different flavors, textures, scents and colors, depending on the region. Wildflower honey is classified as a polyfloral honey, meaning the nectar used to make it comes from a variety of sources.

The Music Farm performance is the first of two Charleston stops on the band’s month-long national tour. The group will take over Charleston Music Hall Dec. 30. Neale’s director’s statement reads: “All of us are looking to the future with some trepidation and we are fearful of the chal lenge our children and grandchildren may face. My hope is that we can take comfort and courage from the stories of the people we came from and realize that those who follow us can overcome much more than we can even imagine.”
The play stars LeeAnne Hutchison as Adrienne. PURE core ensemble members Emily Wilhoit and Camille Lowman play her daughter and oldest granddaughter. Alexa Kennedy Smith plays the youngest granddaughter.Developinganew play can be difficult on a cast, and A Hidden Life is no exception. Other than Hutchison, who plays one char acter throughout, the others play different people as the story weaves in and out of memories. Wilhoit, Lowman and Smith also play younger versions of Adrienne. “It’s challenging,” Wilhoit said, “because we are playing so many characters and they’re real people, especially to Randy. I am playing his mother.”
A Hidden Life runs Aug. 18-Sept. 10 at the Cannon Street Arts Center. Tickets start at $30, and live streamed performances take place Sept. 9-10. Visit puretheatre.org for more info.
.
Smith, a theater student at Fordham University in New York City, is the daughter of PURE core ensemble member R.W. Smith and makes her professional acting debut in A Hidden Life. “It’s been really cool,” Smith said. “Everything that I’ve been taught for years, I’m finally realizing: ‘I have to do it on my own now.’ At the end of the day no one’s gonna hold my hand. I gotta hold my own hand. And it’s kinda awesome.”
Neale developed a narrative version in 2020, as a one-woman show that never came to fruition. He felt it wanted to stage the story with a cast of four women, and A Hidden Life started to take shape. Neale, who is also directing this production, was working on the script up until a few months ago as more information trickled in from family members.
A Hidden Life began as a dance poem. Neale, a former professional dancer, staged the early version of his grandmoth er’s story at DanceSpace in New York City in 1991. Neale and three women of dif ferent ages representing his grandmother danced to “Träumerei (Dreaming),” part of composer Robert Schumann’s Opus 15 [movement No. 7].
A Hidden Life examines family history
PURE’s 17th season kicked off in 2019 with Last Rites, a play exploring his recollections of the 1967 Detroit riots. Neale will now open PURE’s 20th season with another memory play, A Hidden Life Based on the life of Neale’s grandmother Adrienne Laframbois Filion Lavoi who lived through the Depression in Detriot as a young widow and mother, A Hidden Life, follows the modern-day story of a grandmother, her daughter and her granddaughters over one summer. In the play, the daughter and granddaughters realize they know little about her life, and together reconstruct her history from memories and photographs. “This play is about how we pieced this story together over a period of years,” Neale said. His own grandmother never told the family about her past or the why and how of her arrival in Detroit. “I’m still finding things out this year that I didn’t know.”
Hutchison, an established profes sional actor living in New York City, also connects personally with the work. She’s married to Neale’s brother Grant, who performed in Neale’s play The Fool’s Lear in 2011. She’s been well aware of A Hidden Life ’s development and is excited to tell this story in Charleston. “I knew Randy was writing this for the past couple of years,” Hutchison said. “And I was very interested in it. Lowman added, “I feel like our memo ries are constructed of flashes of very intense moments a lot of times — whether that’s intense joy or intense pain or intense laughter. And it’s been challenging as an actor to go from a place of comfort in this world of this grandmother … and then go directly into what is possibly one of the hardest memories of someone’s life.”

The Footlight Players at Queen Street Playhouse kicked off the 91st season with musical The Full Monty, running now through Aug. 28. Written by Terrance McNally and directed by new artistic director Kyle Barnette , The Full Monty follows the plot of the acclaimed cult British film. A group of misfit and unemployed New York steelworkers devise a plan to make money and reclaim their dignity by baring it all in a male strip troupe called Hot Metal. Be advised that The Full Monty features strong language and, of course, brief nudity. Head to footlightplayers.net for show information, ticket sales and to find out about other upcoming shows. It’s been such a lovely process and experience and such a community builder for like the musicians and the singers. And I hope that’s translated to the audience and the people who come out to support us.”
Women & Bond will feature 17 original songs from various James Bond movies, arranged using a horn and string section in addition to a full backing band. Charleston Music Hall director Charles Carmody proposed an all-female perfor mance to Charleston music mavens Lindsey Holler and Hazel Ketchum in 2015 called Women & Tom Waits. Since then, the series has continued with many different iterations. “It’s one of our most successful local series at Charleston Music Hall,” said Carmody. “Patrons love these shows and keep coming back to them. We love that we get to engage with local female singers and musicians to create them.”

The Women & series gives a lot of latitude to the female singers within the scope of the song, Holler said, who’s been producing the series since its inception. Holler loves getting to know different artists’ catalogs intimately in order to figure out how it will translate with the house band for each show. For instance, Women & Radiohead in 2016 was presented with a string section as the focal point of the compositions.

For Eyes Only: Women & Bond arrives at Music Hall
Although Holler now calls Columbia home and Ketchum moved to western North Carolina, the Women & series remains a Charlestoncentric showcase. “We started with Tom Waits and then we thought, ‘Who are other iconic male singers we can turn the tables on a little bit?’ Let’s have women interpret what these guys are doing really well,” Holler said. “One of the early challenges was trying to figure [out] which singers we should choose,” she said. “We wanted a variety of styles and we also wanted the leeway within each singer’s catalog to do different types of interpretations. Some of the songs are straight arrangements from records and then we take some real wild swings. It offered creativity for a lot of the singers and the musicians involved.”
