CRAFT BREW PROFILE
“It’s always bigger than beer. Creating, growing, learning, giving back,” he said.
• Locally Made, Savannah, Ga.
• Lincoln & South Brewing Co., Hilton Head, S.C.
• Mildred Newberry, Charleston, S.C.
• Saltwater Cowboys, Charleston, S.C.
“That’s what this industry is really all about.”
• Service Brewing Co., Savannah, Ga.
“I’m a slave to stainless (used to brew, fer ment and package beer),” Edwards said in our next meeting at his new home, Estuary Beans and Barley on Johns Island, where he is the brand and sales manager. “I want to know everything this business has to offer,” he said, his infectious smile beaming like sunlight from his eyes as he talked and it’s no wonder that every brewery in town that he’s worked for wants him back.
Edwards subscribes to the five ingredi ents of beer: hops, malts, yeast, water and love. And it’s love that has taken him from the brewhouse at Palmetto and Revelry to being taproom manager at Service Brewery in Savannah to brand manager at Estuary. His loyalty to the industry doesn’t stop there. During the Covid-19 pandemic when production slowed across the country, Edwards found a way to continue to grow and give in other ways: candles. Thus, Candles by Lumeire was born. Candles by Lumiere are created by taking cans from various breweries and making unique scents and selling them in taprooms and boutique stores. A portion of the pro ceeds go back to a rotation of nonprofits.
Although originally from Maryland, Edwards has lived and breathed the brewing world in the Southeast for almost a decade, with the exception of a hiatus in Hawaii — because when you get offered a chance to brew beer in Hawaii, you brew beer in Hawaii.
The Candle Man
Tarah Gee
Kristian Edwards, brand and sales manager at Estuary Beans and Barley
By Tarah Gee W ho is this incredibly exu berant-looking human, you ask? Many around town may already know him. If you do, you love him. Meet Kristian Edwards. He’s been in the brewing industry for almost a decade and has damn near worked his way around the globe doing so. One May afternoon at Saltwater Cowboys, I sat down beside Kristian, but had no idea who he was. It wasn’t long before we were chatting, beers in hand. “Never met a stranger” is a cliche that has been used to describe both of us and here we were, strangers but yet, not. We both spent time at Palmetto Brewing Company. We both were wanderers, not lost but exploring. And we both fell deeply in love with an industry that is constantly giving, growing and teaching. Before long, we were laughing and com paring notes about the Charleston beer scene. I immediately texted my Hops partner, Kyle Wallace: “Kristian Edwards is our next craft profile. He IS Charleston beer!”
Where to find Candles by Lumiere:

Oct. 15, Columbia Best of S.C. Craft Beer Festival
“We will be rolling out a standard festival code of conduct along with a new mobile safety app. We want everyone to drink, dance and have a fun time, and this is how we create space for people to Drink Beer And Do Good.”
The South Carolina’s Brewers Guild has 83 brewery members across the state and con tinues to grow. With almost 130 breweries statewide, reaching 100% membership is one the Guild’s main objectives. “We’re excited for the Guild’s inau gural Best of S.C. Craft Beer Festival for many reasons,” stated Terry Horner, vice president of the S.C. Brewers Guild’s board of directors. “One, it will be the largest gathering of South Carolina craft breweries ever held. Two, it’s 100% dedicated to beer produced in the Palmetto State. “Three, it pairs award-winning beers with live music, a dance hall DJ, live music by Prettier Than Matt, food from local favorites and craft beer-related vendors. Showcasing our in-state breweries for craft beer lovers across the Southeast is a unique opportu nity we couldn’t pass up, and one that we are eager to turn into an annual tradition.”
The festival will feature live music, food trucks and beer education. There are more sponsorship opportunities available. Tickets can be purchased online at its website scbeer.org.
While the festival was canceled in 2020, the festival in 2021 was brought to Charleston under slightly different circum stances. Thanks to the pandemic, the pro ducers decided to err on the side of caution and scale the festival as a “beer week” event instead of a one-day festival. Breweries across the county participated by having discounts, selling merchandise and hosting pint nights to support the cause instead.
So lace up your boots and lederhosen:
“We are fortunate that this festival already has solid [sanitary] practices in place that prepared us well to emerge from the pan demic,” Reems said. “Everyone will receive their own commemorative festival mug for beer samples and pours. Hand-washing and sanitizing stations will be scattered around the park for everyone to access.
The festival organizers also said they would

THE BIG STORY
By Tarah Gee Get your steins ready. South Carolina will have more than its share of October beer events and activities to attend. After several years of cancellations and delays due to hurricanes and pandemics, beer festivals are back and they’re bigger than ever. Whether you are new to Charleston, a veteran of the area or a visitor, October promises to be filled with all the craft beer that your heart desires from the 35-plus breweries in Charleston and almost 50 throughout the Lowcountry. Phenomenal growth in recent years has led the industry to generate thousands of jobs and pump millions of dollars into the local economy.
Oct. 22, North Charleston Charleston Beer Festival
While the date that was chosen is during a busy beer time of the year, she said the guild believes featuring the state’s breweries in Columbia in October will give the entire state a chance to come together to sample regions they otherwise might not get to. Beyond providing a stellar festival, the guild aims to create a diverse component and platform to showcase all that the state has to “Southoffer. Carolina’s craft beer scene has always been fantastic, but even many within our state haven’t realized just how many great local drinks are made right here in their own backyard,” said Guild President Pearce Fleming, owner of North Charleston’s Commonhouse Aleworks.
Horner said South Carolina’s craft beer industry was still in its infancy compared to other“However, states. this event is evidence that the guild has made great strides with the help of so many partners to provide value and engagement to its membership,” he said. “We feel an event of this magnitude will help get the word out about the quality and unique flavors South Carolina craft brew eries are known for.”
It’s been three years since the last Charleston Beer Fest and folks are thirsty for it to “Thisreturn.yearwe are excited about being back!” said Richard Reems, director of marketing and development at Palmetto Community Care. “It has been too long since we came together to celebrate all the amazing breweries in our area, and we cannot wait until the doors open at noon on October 22!” The last in-person beer festival in 2019 was also the first year that the festival was held at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. This year, revelers can expect to see participating breweries from the region, musical acts throughout the day as well as vendors, artists, sponsors and supporters of Palmetto Community Care, which says it is excited to have the festival back in full scale.
Get ready for some October Fest-ivals
For the first time in three years, beer enthusiasts will be able to taste a lot of beers at the in-person Charleston Beer Festival
“As you can imagine, finding a date in a centralized location in a state that lives for college football can be difficult,” said Laura Voyles, events and affiliate membership coordinator of the organization.
This year’s Oktoberfest is one you won’t want to miss. Support local. Drink Local. Stay Groovy.
The S.C. Brewers Guild Festival first festival will feature 65 breweries Oct. 15 at Junction 800 in Columbia.
“The Best of S.C. Craft Beer Festival is an incredible opportunity to showcase that, and to bring together the brewers and craft enthusiasts that make our beer industry so special.

Owners David and Jennifer Jeffcoat and brewer Kyle Lieving of Chucktown Brewery fame say they are hoping to open around the first week in October. The name of the brewery, Wind and Waves Brewing, comes from Jeff being a water enthusiast, competitive paddleboarder and volunteer who spends time cleaning up the creeks and river. Using a five-barrel system with eight serving tanks, they plan to offer all styles of beers. The opening taplist is scheduled to include New England IPAs, a couple of sours, a brown and a cream ale. HOPS met recently with Chris Winn, CBW’s new executive director, to discuss how he plans to continue the former director’s legacy while creating his own footprint in 2022. Winn said he aims to make up for previous years’ cancel lations due to the pandemic and hur ricanes. Half of 2017 and 2018 CBW events around the region were canceled due to hurricanes. Events were shifted in 2019 and 2020, only to be knocked out by Covid-19. By the time 2021 rolled around, people were eager to move for ward with events, but were cautiously optimistic. Attendance was markedly lower than expected.
“What I’m most looking forward to bringing to the festival season is another creation of beer,” Dove said. “Tradesman has been gracious enough to allow me to brew on their two barrel system for CBW and Charleston Beer Festival. I’m excited to serve my creation to enthusiasts of beer.”

Charleston Beer Week Ah, Charleston Beer Week… Ten days of nonstop events, friends, family and fun. Charleston Beer Week (CBW) has seen its share of cancellations due to hurricanes, a 1,000 year flood, date conflicts and dis tribution meltdowns. Yet, it perseveres! Just like the people of Charleston.
“We have to maintain our culture in this city,” Winn said. “In the expansion [in local brewing] we are seeing, it’s easy to get diluted. Beer Week is the chance to revitalize what our beer community looks like, tastes like, drinks like, feels like and why it matters. We have to maintain the soul of this industry.”
One thing you can always rely on CBW to produce is community and enthusi asts. There is no lack of loyalists. Each year, CBW puts a new spin on its logo and encourages partygoers to permanently get the art tattooed on their body. Yes, you read that correctly! CBW encourages you to get its logo tattooed on your body and in doing so, you can receive weekly, monthly, yearly or even lifetime discounts at certain locations on beers and products. CBW 2022 will open Oct. 28 with a Brewer’s Ball at Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company and close with a Finale Party on Nov. 6 at The Garden at Charles Towne Fermentory. In between, there are close to eight events every evening from Summerville to James Island to Isle of VolunteersPalms.are needed. If you are inter ested, please reach out to Chris Winn via the CBW website for more information. Planning is still underway so be sure to check the calendar for the most up to date information. “We are dedicated to creating a festival where breweries and distributors who want to expand to Charleston introduce their best at Charleston Beer Fest, national music artists want to be a part of the lineup and great beer is had by all so that money can be raised for the essential work of Palmetto Community Care!” Reems said. Now with close to 40 breweries cur rently in the Charleston metro area, there is plenty of soul to be found. “We’ve got new breweries, tertiary breweries, gypsy breweries. We have to become clear as to what beer week means. The proof needs to be in the pud ding this year,” Winn said. You will definitely be able to find the proof in the pudding with Tha Community, a gypsy brewery by the Traveling Hoptista aka April Dove. Her collaborations have popped up all over town and have wowed folks all over the Lowcountry.
There was nothing but smiles on June 24th in the taproom and courtyard of The Hold, the experimental barrel-aged sour program by Revelry Brewing Company, on the final evening of their adventure at 36 Romney St. in Charleston. Members of the community came out in support to show love to owners Ryan Coker, Sean Fleming and Jay Daratony as they closed the doors to the location for the final time. Boxes of specialty bottles filed out the doors and into the back of cars sure to be enjoyed in the days, weeks and months to come. One thing is for sure, he said. This year’s event will take place — rain or shine. It’s been too long since the Lowcountry has come together to cele brate the craft brew industry in a festival venue, Reems said.

By Kyle Wallace HOPS recently sat down with Andy Elliott, co-owner and director of brewing operations at Low Tide Brewing, and founder Mike Fielding. In recent years, there have been several changes at Johns Island’s first brewery.
HOPS 09.01.2022 14 BREWERY VISIT
“I tried to focus on all the positive things that can be done at a brewery instead of the hard work it takes to open a new business” he said. “I took time to find more balance in my life. I met my wife at the taproom, we bought a house, became foster parents and now we have a young family including my adopted son and a biological daughter. Many regulars know my kids’ faces as they frequent the brewery and are proud mem bers of the Juice Box Crew.”
“The lockdown was tough,” Fielding said. “We are a draft-focused brewery. We thought about pivoting into cans, but made the choice not to. But our local following is what saw us through. The sales of to-go crowlers allowed us to make it.” The ability to serve cus tomers at a pass through window, and to-go sales allowed them to stay open, and work towards betterElliotttimes.said the brewery has had a lot of success in New Age beers, such as “hazies, adjunct beers and nonbeer flavored beers.” They also produce malt beverages like “Tastes Like Gatorade Blue Seltzer” that have turned out to be very pop ular. “We wanted to include nontraditional beer fans. That’s where the seltzer, and stuff like our occasion glitter beer come in.”
“I never thought I’d be a beach guy, but I’m learning,” he said. Lagers are his favorite style of beer to brew, and a crisp pilsner is his go-to drinking beer. But don’t let his traditional preferences mislead you — he also is very excited to talk about his newest Quencher Series seltzer, as he put down a blazing orange-colored seltzer on the table. But with every high moment at a brewery, there continues to be unexpected low moments too. Their most recent taproom-only 16-ounce can release was the Jordan’s Pils. The brew pays homage to a Low Tide family member who is suffering from cancer. The pilsner can release was a way to help spread the patient’s story and raise donations. All of the proceeds from the can sales are being donated by Low Tide for medical expenses. In the end, the brewery raised about $18,000 to support the patient’s fight. Like many of the brewery owners in Charleston, it is not hard to see the passion in the eyes of Fielding and Elliott. They would be the first to tell you their passion comes from their time with their family, employees and everyday customers who come through the door. Also important: the opportunity to see the community come together around good causes, supporting good people. Those intangible qualities of positive vibes continue to raise the bar at Low Tide Brewing.
Elliott said he gained a new perspective on life after his mother died in a car acci dent a year after the brewery opened.

“The social environment of a brewery is one of our favorite aspects of our business and where we pride ourselves as a company culture,” Fielding said. “Over the last six years since we opened, we have seen many high moments and many low moments too. ‘That’s life’ the expression goes but going through those ups and downs is something we are still learning.”
Elliott came to the Lowcountry after serving as head brewer at Benson Brewing in Nebraska. His brewing talents and desire to use local ingredients have led to stellar beers. For example, “Basil Better Have My Money” Ale won a bronze medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival. Both beer entrepreneurs often talk about stewardship. They strive to make the tap room not just a place to drink beer, but an inclusive place to gather various politicians, groups and organizations have all used the brewery as a venue for their causes. This all came to a halt when the pandemic struck.
Today, Low Tide boasts an impressive brewery operation. It has 12 20-barrel conical fermenting tanks, three 20-barrel brite tanks, and a 10-barrel brewing system at the original location, and an offsite production facility in North Charleston.“By2021 our distribution was up almost 40%,” Fielding said. “This is thanks to our local following spreading the word about our beer. We did almost 3,000 barrels of beer last year. We have a beer just for the Kiawah Golf Course.” This rise of production led to the hiring of Head Brewer Sam Pagano. Formerly head brewer at C.H. Evans Brewing in Albany New York, Pagano’s desire to be where it is warmer led him to Charleston.

Elliott joined Fielding and Low Tide in 2015. He received a fermentation science degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where he apprenticed and studied under head brewers from Odell, New Belgium and Coors. Fielding started out as a home brewer in the basement of his fraternity house. It was while kayaking in the waters around Johns Island in 2012 that the idea for Low Tide Brewing was formed. “Since 2017 I’ve gotten married, and also bought a house,” he said. “No kids but we do have four dogs. I pour most of my time and money back into the brewery.”
