Effort to break direct car sale ban stalls at S.C. General Assembly

Several Upstate residents complained to him they couldn’t buy a Tesla in South Carolina because of the law. Tesla currently sells its cars through company-owned sales centers, including those in Savannah and Charlotte. Traditional dealerships, however, are inde pendently owned. Burns told City Paper that his constitu ents are “frustrated because there are no [Tesla] dealerships here. The way the law is written [buyers would] have to buy in a state that permits it then import it into South Carolina or buy it directly from the company and then import it in. They felt it was a hassle to do that.”

Automobile enthusiasts who were hoping for a more convenient way in South Carolina to purchase or service an all-electric Tesla car will have to wait a little longer to have their anxiety lifted. A bill that would have allowed makers of all types of vehicles to sell their products directly to consumers stalled recently in a S.C. House committee.
Although the bill didn’t spark interest in the last legislative session, Burns said “the landscape might be a little different when we go back [in session] next year” as more fed eral electric-car tax incentives gain traction.

There are slightly more than 11,000 electric cars registered in the state of which about 6,400 are Teslas, according to the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV). By comparison, more than 65,000 electric-gas hybrids are on the state’sWithhighways.bigautomakers selling electric cars and hybrids, Burns said, “that takes some of the sting out of this problem because if you are interested in an electric vehicle, and not specifically a Tesla, then it gives [con sumers] a place to shop.” Burn also filed a bill in the House to pilot placing one electric charging station along each of the state’s five interstate highways. That bill also didn’t get a hearing, but it has some interest in a Senate subcommittee, he added. It is unknown how much revenue the state is losing because of the ban on direct sales of electric vehicles. Buyers pay 5% of a car’s price up to $500 as an infra structure maintenance fee (IMF). That fee, which replaced a state vehicle sales tax five years ago when the state upped the state’s gasoline tax, goes to the state Department of Transportation, which maintains the roads, said Lauren Philips, SCDMV’s deputy director for legislative affairs. If a South Carolina buyer pays $200 in sales tax for an electric or gaso line-powered vehicle in another state, the buyer is charged $300, she said. If a buyer paid $500 in sales tax in another state, however, no fee is owed to South Carolina, she added.

More gun violence
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg is calling on state officials to do more to end gun violence, which again erupted on downtown streets. “Enough is enough,” the mayor said. “This senseless violence has got to stop.” Charleston police have arrested two people on firearms violations after an early Sept. 4 shooting on King Street that left six injured with non-life-threatening injuries. Since the beginning of the year, nine people have died due to Charleston gun violence, the mayor said. —Staff Reports 530 Number of seats the Charleston International Airport will add to boarding areas to accommodate record high numbers of travelers. The City of Charleston has a new one-stop resource center on Meeting Street for indi viduals and families who are chronically homeless or at risk of becoming homeless called the Hope Center. Since opening June 6, the center has helped 101 households by providing free laundry, shower and mail services, a food pantry, a clothing closet and meeting space for aid organizations to connect clients with health care, housing and financial resources, said LaTosha Jenkins-Fludd, the Hope Center’s director. “For one gentleman who is homeless, we were able to get an intake done for him and get him showered and a nice set of new clothes,” Fludd said. “He was hired with Dollar General literally on the spot that day. We also helped him secure trans portation to make sure that he could make it to the Homelessinterview.”individuals and families often encounter transportation challenges when traveling to different organizations for help, Fludd said. The Hope Center’s goal is to eliminate those barriers by providing all of the resources in one location. Several partners go to the center to supply comprehensive services including: StandUp Wireless for free government phones, Palmetto Project for insurance services, Shifa Clinic for health services and the City of North Charleston homeless coor dinator Brandon Lilienthal for outreach. Offsite partners also contribute aid and supplies to the Hope Center, including One80 Place, Palmetto Goodwill, Palmetto Community Action Partnership, the Humanities Foundation, Undergarment Society, The Stone Soup Collective CHS and Seacoast Church. “We have families that are living in their cars that come to the center for help,” Fludd said. “We have chronically home less people who live in encampments and on the streets who have mental health and substance abuse issues who need assis tance. We’ve also been successful in getting some of the single parties who don’t have children beds at One80 Place.”

CCPRC, which owns the 37-acre McLeod Plantation Historic Site, recently completed a study of the burial ground to determine its boundaries and the number of burial sites. An additional acre of burial sites owned by the City of Charleston was included in the study.

The S.C. Senate on Wednesday is expected to take up a total abortion with exceptions that passed the House last week on a party-line vote.
On Tuesday, the state Senate went into a perfunctory session to accept the just-passed House bill and send it to the S.C. Medical Affairs Committee, which discussed it at 10 a.m.
“There are a lot of signs that [a total ban] is unpopular and could hurt them,” one South Carolina analyst observed.

On Aug. 30, the S.C. House passed a new ban on abortion with two exclusions after a stronger version of the bill with no exceptions was rejected initially by eight votes. Under the new proposal, which still needs approval by the state Senate, the exceptions are allowed for up to 12 weeks after conception.

The existing laws were never created to protect the con sumer and there are regular examples of the dealership model hurting consumers and limiting competition.” Marquez said people in South Carolina are often dismayed and shocked to learn that direct sales and servicing of Teslas is illegal in the state. “Most people don’t even know this is a law,” he added. Last year, a series of Senate amend ments to the dealer-manufacturer law altered the sale of motor vehicles through a dealership. The amendments clarified and strengthened the prohibition on bypassing the dealership. For example, one change made it clear that a manufacturer could not directly lease to a customer. It also explicitly stipulated a manufacturer was not a dealer as defined in the law.

He didn’t know how he would get back out to his Isle of Palms hotel and couldn’t remember his wife’s phone number. Police arrested him for public intoxication and gave him a ride … to jail.
Thank American labor unions for Monday holiday Views
So when you think of unions these days, don’t automatically accept the establishment line that they’re no good. As a nation, we’re much better off because of labor unions.

T
Views 09.07.2022 10 he reason that you had a day off Monday was because of labor unions. Lots of people in South Carolina, the state with the lowest unionization rate in the country, won’t want to admit that they were able to relax Monday because of unions. But, as they say, it is what it is.

As of last year, only 1.7% of South Carolina’s workers were unionized, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. That translates to 34,000 union workers out of the 2 million people who work in South Carolina. What’s sad about those numbers is the precipitous drop from 59,000 union workers in the Palmetto State in 2020, a decline obviously brought on by the Interestingly, pandemic.unions are more popular nationally now than in years. According to a new poll by Gallup, 68% of Americans approve of labor unions. That’s the highest percentage since 1965. Not surprisingly, Democrats have a 90% approval of unions, up 7 points since last year. But half of Republicans (47%) and two-thirds of independents (66%) also approve of unions. With unions more popular than in a long time, it’s kind of confounding why membership is declining, down from 20% of workers across the nation two decades ago to 10% now. Union members tend to have higher pay, better benefits and greater job security than non-union peers, who generally don’t benefit from collective bargaining. But in right-to-work states like South Carolina that have demonized unions for generations, the focus isn’t on the positives, but on negatives, such as union dues, cases of corruption and slower advancement in union shops. South Carolinians ought to give unions another look and a fair shake. Thanks to unions, workers have better wages, safer working conditions and an eight-hour workday. Unions also were leaders in efforts to stop child labor and implement health benefits, pensions and help for those injured on the job. Unions also were instrumental in other benefits we take for granted, such as overtime pay, Medicare, Social Security, and fair treatment for women and minority groups.
Don’t miss what everyone is talking about! charlestoncitypaper.com
And also remember Labor Day — the day you celebrated this week. It wouldn’t have been a Monday holiday if unions didn’t push 140 years ago for a day to recognize the importance of all workers in making America strong and prosperous.

“And here, in my view, is what is true: MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people. They refuse to accept the results of a free election and they’re working right now as I speak in state after state to give power to decide elections in America to partisans and cro nies, empowering election deniers to undermine democracy itself.”
And now, the current president is calling Trump and Make America Great Again Republicans to task for being a threat to freedom and democracy. Biden’s done it nimbly before, dancing around the subject in his talk over the soul of America, but Thursday’s speech just as the 2022 election cycle ramps up was a one-two punch to the nose. He couldn’t have been clearer. And it’s about time: “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundation of our republic,” Biden said. “Now I want to be very, clear, very clear up front. Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces the extreme ideology. I know, because I’ve been able to work with these mainstream Republicans.”
By Andy Brack OPINION
Extremists who want authoritarians in power want to take the country backwards. They wanted to nullify votes of 81 million Americans, Biden said. They are a clear and present danger to the uni fying democracy always enjoyed in the nation. Biden urged Americans to unify and shed the hate and division of extremists in the November midterm elections. We are not powerless. Challenge authoritarianism. Rise above fear. And take off those embarrassing red hats that reflect division. In fact, throw them in the trash. Instead, register a neighbor to vote and head to the polls in November to elect reasonable Republicans and Democrats.
Cast off threats to freedom, democracy
But the former president and his diehard followers, Biden said, domi nate and intimidate the leadership of the party. And in echoes of the kind of language his old friend Hollings used 29 years ago Biden said, “These are hard things, but I’m an American presi dent, not a president of red America or blue America, but of all America. And I believe it’s my duty, my duty, to level with you, to tell the truth no matter how difficult, no matter how painful.

It was a dark day for Charleston in late February 1993 when U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings learned early that the Navy base in Charleston would be closed. The official announcement wouldn’t come for two weeks, but Hollings immediately called a press conference. The people, he told me, deserved to know the truth as soon as possible. Despite hard work by the community to keep the base off of the Navy’s closure list, he believed in the core of his being that his duty was more than just to share good news. He had to deliver the bad, too, when it was bad. That, he said, would let people prepare sooner for what was to come. And so it is now with a Sept. 1 speech by President Joe Biden in Philadelphia. He delivered a major prime time address to the nation to let Americans know their democracy was under threat from people who live here who want to take away freedom and the fundamental power to vote. We’ve known it for a while. We felt it as authoritarian rhet oric increased and dominated the political culture during the term of former President Donald Trump, an enabler in chief. We saw the results of the single-minded pursuit of his quest to keep power in the terrible hours of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. And now we see how Trump continues to thumb his nose at the peaceful transition of power and rule of law with the seizure of hundreds of top secret documents that he wasn’t supposed to have taken from the White House.

T he No. 1 movie in the country on Sept. 12, 1997, was The Game, a thriller directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Douglas. While The Game was dominating the domestic movie landscape, a brand new theater in Charleston was screening a 1996 comedy, Love Serenade. That was opening day for the Terrace Theater on James Twenty-fiveIsland.years later, the Terrace Theater stands proudly as the oldest-operating locally owned movie theater in Charleston. It serves as the centerpiece of a vibrant James Island community that bears little resemblance to the place Amy Marzluff, current man ager at the Terrace and daughter of original Terrace owner Marcie Marzluff, remembers growing up. The building was a Red & White grocery store before the Marzluffs converted it into a single-screen theater. At the time, James Island was missing much of the familiar elements it has today. There were few houses, restaurants and other attractions. Now the Terrace shares a packed parking lot with popular spots like Paddock & Whisky, Crust and Bar George. Its popularity is continuing to grow. Terrace Theater is on one of the best runs it has ever had, said Paul Brown, current owner and operator of the Terrace. The theater has seen lines out the door, as

The success of such a massive blockbuster at the traditionally indie-focused Terrace highlights one of the many shifts in the the ater’s 25 year history. “When the theater first started, it was solely small independent movies,” Brown said. “But the marketplace has changed.
Top Gun: Maverick, the highest grossing film in 2022 so far, has kept the Terrace packed with moviegoers as showtimes continue to sell out. It unseated the theater’s previous top sales leaders: 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding and 1997’s The Wings of the Dove, the first big hit at the fledgling theater.
“It’s not just that it’s 25 years surviving. It’s 25 years of this amazing journey,” Brown said. He bought the theater in 2010, making him the third owner since its incep tion following Marcie Marzluff and Michael Furlinger, who bought the Terrace in 2007.

It’s this change in philosophy that has seen the Terrace become the home for the latest Marvel tentpole, the current A24 flicks and the small foreign films that fly under the radar. The theater truly has a slate for everybody. Revisiting the classics In celebration of its anniversary, the Terrace is bringing a new wave of classic movies. Throughout September, the theater is screening major movies of yesteryear for $5, the original price of tickets in 1997.
Yes, we try to still do 50% to 60% indepen dent films, but the pickings are slimmer. And so we’re now mixing those smaller movies with the big budget movies.”

Some recent renovations mean audi ences entering the building this September will notice updated bathrooms, as well as a custom-made carpet designed to mimic the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Shining On Sept. 12, the theater’s official anniver sary day, everything at the Terrace will be half-priced, including tickets and conces sions. The Terrace will also hold a raffle drawing, with the winner receiving a oneyear free movie pass. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause that is very close to home for Marzluff and the Terrace family. She said her mother, Marcie, is currently in hospice, suffering fromHerAlzheimer’s.mother’scondition has made the anni versary bittersweet for Amy, but she draws strength from the legacy of the Terrace.
Marzluff and Brown said they want to see more retro and classic movies come through the Terrace. Seeing a continued dedication to current indie and block buster films while also screening older films is a big deal for the team at the Terrace. But for Brown, the future con tinues to be working with the community and improving the moviegoing experience.

According to Brown, the theater already experimented with some changes that it wanted to try, like the shift to a drive-in during the pandemic. But that doesn’t mean he’s sitting idle. The answers may lie in its past. “I miss a little bit of the mixed media,” Brown said. In the theater’s earliest days, it hosted live theater performances by the former Charleston Guerilla Theatre Company. “I’d love to get more performance art com bined with the theater experience,” he said. Brown also points to their recent Rocky Horror shadowcast performances as the kind of events he’d love to do more often. He also wants to put a bigger focus on educa tional aspects for children who dream of working in the business.
Marzluff said she feels whatever the future holds, she’ll be a part of it.
But what’s next for the Terrace?
Looking to the future
“We’ve been here for 25 years, and it’s always really awesome to hear from people how much they love the theater,” she said. “To hear how they had their first date here, or how their husband proposed after they saw a movie here, or how they have all these awesome memories here. I get to think: ‘Oh, that’s something my mom built that has made so many people happy.’ So that’s a consolation.”
“Paul is a great owner,” she said. “I think he’s the only person who cares about this place more than I do.”

Indiana Jones adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark, Wes Anderson’s cult classic Rushmore and the acclaimed Three Colors trilogy. Amy Marzluff said she feels a particular connection to one of the anniversary screen ings: Cinema Paradiso. Marzluff spent much of her youth in the theater, or playing in the plaza with the children of other business owners. She has worked off and on at the Terrace since 2007, most recently as a man ager, but got her start there at a very early age. “We did play [Cinema Paradiso] here back in the 1990s, and that was actually the first movie I ever threaded in a pro jector,” Marzluff said. “The manager here at the time really liked me. She taught me to do some projection stuff, and that was the first movie I threaded by myself.”
Surviving the pandemic and evolving over the last 25 years has Brown excited for the“Ifuture.feelassured. I feel confident in the future of our business. I feel confident in who we are as a business,” he said. “One of the things the last couple years have taught us is the connection between small business and its patrons. If it’s personalized, if the experience feels unique, different and exciting, it’s gonna thrive. And I think that’s sort of what’s hap pening with us.”

Lowcountry home chefs looking to take their cooking skills to the next level may just need a little inspiration and a few new skills. Then they can turn family meals into extravagant adventures, take backyard barbecues to new heights, and impress friends and neighbors with pitmaster-worthy recipes. In fact, Lowcountry grillers, many of whom grew up with a bias for pork and chicken barbecue, can get schooled about increasingly familiar Texas beef barbecue just by turning on the television. From beef ribs and barbacoa to curried brisket rice and pho rub beef belly spring rolls, viewers are in for a treat with BBQuest: Beyond the Pit, a video series that dives into the long-held tra ditions, new flavors and everyday inspiration that make Texas barbecue legendary.
The third season of the show follows four themes that capture the essence of Texas barbecue: legacy and tradition; creativity and innovation; Texas trailblazers; and family and community.

“We are outside people,” Medea Duffy said, “and so before we did anything with the house, we put a pool in.” The installation was done thoughtfully to ensure no harm was done to the trees, which shade the pool and backyard to bring reprieve from the stifling heat.
“This is like my favorite thing in the world,” she said about her espresso machine. The light from the wide windows that overlook a slice of the Charleston Harbor saturates the living room. Her dog Uma lightly snores while she sleeps next to an air conditioning vent on the Duffy, floor.originally from Pennsylvania, met husband Brian in Washington, D.C., while she was working in advertising. He’s from Charleston originally and had plans to return to his hometown. In 2004, the couple relocated to Charleston where Brian, son of retired U.S. District Judge Patrick Michael Duffy, went on to estab lish the Duffy & Young law firm. Although the couple started raising their three children in another house, the Duffys bought their current James Island home where they now live eight years ago. “It was straight up 1970,” she said of seeing the house for the first time. “Everything was exactly as it was since 1970. But we love the water, and so we came back in our boat to see if we could have water access.” Once they determined they could get the boat in and out, it was a done deal.
The Duffys did some pretty extensive renovations to improve the bathrooms and open up the kitchen and living room area. The old galley kitchen had a wall that split the room in half and blocked the beautiful view, so they knocked it down to create an open floor plan. The view of the harbor stretches out behind the backyard scattered with ancient oak trees.
“I just put in whatever I like,” she said. “I love vintage, like love vintage, so a lot of the random chotchkies and artwork are vintage, and a lot of local stuff too — I don’t care if it matches.”
Raising children and a community spot
When Duffy first came to Charleston in 2004, she raised children and worked in the nonprofit sector for several years, including Summerville projects such as Scrumptious Kitchen Tour that Duffy settles in with a love for all things local

The Duffys’ furniture and decor is a sea of beige and brown hues and textured wood, with pops of color and eclectic vintage treasures. Duffy said she has a thing for swan knickknacks, which decorate the wall shelving around the living room fireplace and are nestled throughout the house.
Medea Duffy combined her love for local artisanship and sustainability to launch Local Love CHS gift shop on James Island.

Then Duffy started a subscription flower service in which she sourced flowers locally for subscribers who received the weekly arrangements, depending on what was fresh. As the business grew, running deliveries and balancing schedules with the kids became too much; she ended the business. In 2018, Duffy met a friend who lives close to her neighborhood, Shelly Belill, and they entertained the idea of a business venture that would eventually become their Camp Road gift shop Local Love CHS. “She talked to me about doing something together and then it just kind of happened,” Duffy said. “We didn’t even know what we wanted to do when we met, but we both really liked [sourcing] locally and we both loved going to markets and meeting local makers. And it just kind of morphed into Local Love.” Duffy and Belill wanted people to be able to buy good local stuff in one place regularly, not just at pop-up events or flea markets. To test their concept, they started with a stall in Patina Market in West Ashley. Although the duo had great reception, they knew they would move spaces eventually. But right when they found a space to lease, news of Covid-19 stalled the decision to open a brick-and-mortar location. Instead, they opened up an online store, kept their inventory in a storage space and offered free local delivery. They also incentivized local businesses to provide subscribers with products, such as locally made candles and baked goods. Once the duo’s online operation made it through the Covid-related shutdown, they opened a space in Riverland Terrace before moving to the current loca tion off Camp Road on James Island. Local Love CHS has been open at that location since March 2022.

The size and shape of fossil animal teeth can tell scientists about the diet of various species. Scientists can then infer what the landscape was like. Mammoth teeth are large, elongated and flat, which are great for grinding grasses and possibly other flowering plants, indicating more of a grassland environment. The mammoth’s tusks were elongated incisors that weren’t used for eating at all. Instead they used their tusks for digging up vegetation for food, fighting and possibly sexual selection. Scientists observe these behaviors from the modern living relative of the mammoth, the Asian elephant. Often confused for mammoths, is the American Mastodon (Mammut ameri canum) which also lived in the area during the last Ice Age. They were smaller and stockier than mammoths with shorter, straighter tusks. Although seemingly sim ilar, mammoths and mastodons branched off from a common ancestor around 5 mil
According to the United States Geological Survey, ice sheets covered approximately 25% of the Earth’s land surface at this time. In North America, ice sheets extended as far south on the east coast as Long Island, New York, and to southern Illinois in the Midwest. With a significant amount of the Earth’s freshwater resources tied up in land ice, global sea level was over 400 feet below modern levels.
Mammuthus columbi) as the official state fossil. Prior to this time, South Carolina was one of only a handful of states that didn’t have a state fossil. McConnell wrote legislators stating that one of the earliest discoveries of this fossil was by slaves on a South Carolina planta tion in 1725. Despite a lot of pushback from creationist lawmakers who wanted to include language from the book of Genesis into this declaration, the bill passed the General Assembly without any religious amendments and was signed into law by Gov. Nikki Haley. During these dog days of summer, it’s hard to imagine a time when the Lowcountry wasn’t a sauna. But in the notso-distant-past, it was considerably cooler and drier. Approximately 21,000 years ago during the last “Glacial Maximum” (collo quially known as the last Ice Age), mega fauna such as the Columbian mammoth, saber-toothed cats, 13-foot-tall ground sloths, mastodons, giant armadillos, tapirs (ancient swine) and even giant beavers tromped around the Southeast.

It was likely a combination of these envi ronmental stressors. Both the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston and the Charleston Museum have excellent fossil displays of Pleistocene megafauna found here in the Southeast. Ongoing research at the College of Charleston continues to help refine the Lowcountry’s prehistoric landscape. According to scientists, mammoths and mastodons migrated at different times from Eurasia via the Bering land bridge in Alaska during one of the many glacial periods over the last 5 million to 6 mil lion years. Fossils of both of these ani mals can be found as far south as Mexico. Unfortunately at the end of the last Ice Age (around 10,000 years before present-day), nearly all Pleistocene megafauna went extinct. Hypotheses of their demise include habitat loss from a warming climate and rising seas, competition for scarce food sources and over-hunting by early humans.

The U.S. Embassy in Slovenia was one of the Wild West Fest sponsors and when the CDP was looking for someone to send to Slovenia last month, it seemed like Karmel was the right fit. It was a happy coincidence that the U.S. ambassador to Slovenia lives 100 miles away in Columbia when she’s not in Slovenia.

Karmel grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, with the vinegary tang of that state’s pulled pork, but a marketing job traveling with Weber Stephen Products Co., the makers of Weber grills, exposed her to all sorts of regional barbecue styles.

One of the men she met during the visit raises specialty pigs that roam free and forage for their food. She was able to get him to donate St. Louis cut spare ribs and baby back ribs — two cuts that are apparently rare in Slovenia — for her demonstrations.“IhostedaMaster Class where I taught them to make their own spice rub and then I showed them how to make North Carolina style pulled pork,” she said. “I also showed them my favorite ‘back pocket’ recipe, which is beer can chicken and we

It sounds like a setup for a joke: Three Slovenian guys walk into a barbecue joint in ButTexas…the three guys in question, Miki Stjepanovic, Ales Omejc and Peter Hajdu, fell in love with barbecue. It’s no joke how serious Slovenia — a country a quarter of the size of South Carolina that’s nestled between Austria and Croatia — has become about barbecue. The three got certified with the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) and started the Slovenian BBQ Society in 2017. Now they host the Wild West Fest, an annual KCBS barbecue competition and country music festival in Slovenia. And that’s where the Charleston connec tion comes in. One of the Holy City’s newest residents just got back from serving as culinary ambassador for the Wild West Fest in ElizabethSlovenia.
“In Slovenia, they cook primarily by hand and by touch rather than using a recipe. But I’m going to try to re-create those dishes at home.”
“I discovered grilling is the best way to prepare food, bar none,” she said in a recent interview. “The convection heat of the grill does everything for you. All you have to do is to get the best quality ingredients, use a little bit of olive oil, salt and pepper — and the right outdoor cooking technique to make amazing food.” With Weber, Karmel started teaching food writers and chefs how to take their indoor cooking game outside.

The jalapeño cheddar cheese sausage has jalapeños from Mexico, the sausage itself is a German tradition, and the cheddar cheese is what was widely available in the United States. I just love that. I am passionate about barbecue!”
“I was learning about so much more than North Carolina barbecue. In North Carolina, it’s all about the pig. In Kansas City, they joke, ‘If it moves, we barbecue it.’ And then, in central Texas, because of the German and Mexican influence, they cook a lot of different foods, including sausage which, for a North Carolina girl, was the strangest thing I’d ever seen. But Texas barbecue really is probably the best example of the confluence of all these heritages.
In this case, Karmel was recommended to the head of the Culinary Diplomacy Project (CDP), a project formed during the Obama Administration that became a non profit when the administration and interest in the project changed. The program works with embassies that want to promote better cross-cultural awareness through food.

She said she loved the street food “Burek” — a savory, spiralshaped pastry with filling — and a cab bage soup called “Jota.” Liver and onions, normally a chore for Americans to eat, was prepared with thinly shaved frozen liver infused with onions, red wine and butter. Karmel said she planned to make those dishes for herself in Charleston. “In Slovenia, they cook primarily by hand and by touch rather than using a recipe. But I’m going to try to re-create those dishes at home,” she said. “I am extremely inquisitive. I learned how to make barbecue because I went to the old salts and asked them what they were doing and then tried it on my own. I absorbed it all like a sponge.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): As a Taurus, you are always wise to be reverent toward your five senses. They are your glorious treasures, your marvelous superpowers, your sublime assets. In the coming weeks, they will serve you even better than usual. As you deploy them with all your amazement and appreciation unfurled, they will boost your intel ligence. They will heighten your intuition in ways that guide you to good decisions. You will tune into interesting truths that had previously been hidden from you. I suspect your sensory apparatus will be so sharp and clear that it will work almost as extra sensory powers.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): There are blessings in every abyss. You, of all the signs in the zodiac, have the greatest capacity to find those blessings and make them yours. Likewise, there is an abyss in each blessing. You, of all the signs, have the most power to make sure your experiences in the abyss don’t detract from but enhance the blessing. In the coming weeks, dear Scorpio, take maximum advan tage of these superpowers of yours. Be a master of zeroing in on the opportunities seeded in the dilem mas. Show everyone how to hone in on and enjoy the delights in the darkness. Be an inspirational role model as you extract redemption from the messes.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): One of my favorite Sagittarians is practical mystic Caroline Myss, who was born with sun and Mercury and ascendant in Sagittarius. In accordance with current astrological omens, I’ve gathered six of her quotes to serve your current needs. 1. There isn’t anything in your life that cannot be changed. 2. When you do not seek or need approval, you are at your most powerful. 3. Healing comes from gathering wisdom from past actions and letting go of the pain that the education cost you. 4. The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. 5. What serves your spirit enhances your body. What diminishes your spirit diminishes your body. 6. What is in you is stronger than what is out there to defeat you.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The coming weeks will be a favorable time to dream up creative solu tions to problems that haven’t fully materialized yet. Then you can apply your discoveries as you address problems that already exist. In other words, dear Aquarius, I’m telling you that your uncanny facility for glimpsing the future can be useful in enhancing your life in the present. Your almost psychic capacity to foretell the coming trends will be instrumental as you fix glitches in the here and now.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Author Jean Frémon says Cancerian naturalist Henry David Thoreau “always had two notebooks — one for facts, and the other for poetry. But Thoreau had a hard time keep ing them apart, as he often found facts more poetic than his poems.” Judging from your current astrologi cal omens, Cancerian, I suspect you are entering a time when facts will be even more poetic than usual. If you open yourself to the magic of reality, the mundane details of everyday life will delight you and appeal to your sense of wonder. Routine events will veer toward the marvelous. Can you bear to experi ence so much lyrical grace? I think so.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries-born Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was one of the greatest basketball players ever. He excelled at most aspects of the game. Some experts say his rebounding was only average for a player his size — 7 feet, 2 inches. But he is still the third-best rebounder in National Basketball Association history. And he played for 20 years until age 40. What tips might Abdul-Jabbar have for you now? Here’s a suggestion from him that aligns with your current astrological omens: “Work on those parts of your game that are fundamentally weak.” The implication is that you have a lot of strengths, and now it’s time to raise up the rest of your skill set.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “To love oneself is hard work,” declares Virgo author Hanif Abdurraqib. He adds, “But I think it becomes harder when you realize that you’re actually required to love multiple versions of yourself that show up without warning throughout a day, throughout a week, throughout a month, throughout a life.” Let’s make that your inspirational strategy, Virgo. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to refine, deepen and invigorate your love for all your selves. It may be hard work, but I bet it will also be fun and exhilarating.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): How to be the best Libra you can be in the next three weeks: 1. Make sure your cool attention to detail never gets chilly. Warm it up now and then. Invite your heart to add its counsel to your head’s observations. Tenderize your objectivity. 2. Always be willing to be puzzled. Always be entertained and educated by your puzzlement. Proceed on the theory that nothing ever changes unless somebody is puzzled. 3. Practice, practice, practice the art of moderation. Do so with the intention of using it as a flexible skill rather than an unthinking habit. 4. Applying the Goldilocks principle will be essential. Everything must be just right: nei ther too much nor too little; neither overly grand nor overly modest.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the coming weeks, logic may be of only partial use to you. Information acquired through your senses might prove less than fully adequate, as well. On the other hand, your talents for feeling deeply and tapping into your intuition can provide you with highly accurate intelligence. Here’s a further tip to help you maxi mize your ability to understand reality: Visit a river or creek or lake. Converse with the fish and frogs and turtles and beavers. Study the ways of the crabs and crayfish and eels. Sing songs to the dragonflies and whirligig beetles and lacewings.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “What good is it if you read Plato but never clean your toilet?” writes author Alice Munro. To which I add, “What good is it if you have brilliant breakthroughs and intriguing insights but never translate them into practical changes in your daily rhythm?” I’m not saying you are guilty of these sins, Leo. But I want to ensure that you won’t be guilty of these sins in the coming weeks. It’s cru cial to your long-term future that you devote quality time to being earthy and grounded and pragmatic. Be as effective as you are smart.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I have always felt you Capricorns are wise to commune with rocks, dirt, mud, sand and clay. I think you should regularly touch the actual earth with your hands and bare feet. If I’m out hiking with a Capricorn friend, I might urge them to sniff blooming mushrooms and lean down to kiss the exposed roots of trees. Direct encounters with natural wonders are like magic potions and miracle medicine for you. Moreover, you flourish when you nurture close personal relation ships with anything that might be described as foun dational. This is always true, but will be extra true for you in the coming weeks. Your words of power are kernel, core, gist, marrow and keystone.

Local vocalist/percussionist Gino Castillo remembers his grandmother listening to Cuban boleros on the radio and his grand father spinning vinyls of classic composers Bach, Beethoven, Wagner and Tchaikovsky while he was growing up in Quito, Ecuador. But it was watching a black and white video of the leather-clad, long-haired Ecuadorian ’80s pop rock group Barro that awakened his musical curiosity at 5 years old. “One of the shots went to the drummer, and he started playing. I have this memory like it was yesterday watching that video and saying, ‘I want to be that guy,’” Castillo told City Paper After that epiphany, Castillo spent his formative years in conservatory training for piano and violin before he made an unruly redirection to drumming on an old kit he refurbished. Finally in 1998, he chose the congas with a resolved focus on Latin percussion.Hewenton to study the congas under Afro-Cuban jazz group Irakere’s conguero Oscar Váldes in Havana, then toured as per cussionist with rock band Cruks en Karnak back in Ecuador. He also taught percussion in Berklee College of Music’s Ecuadorian branch and the George Gershwin Conservatory’s Latin percussion center in Quito. After a stint of recording and touring in New York City’s Latin-jazz scene as the Gino Castillo Quartet, Castillo moved to Charleston in 2010. He started at zero after the music opportunity he relocated to Charleston for fell through. By early 2011, local jazz icons Jack McCray and Leah Suárez welcomed Castillo into the Charleston Jazz Orchestra family. Castillo further connected with Charleston’s small Latin jazz community when he met multi-instrumentalist Steven Sandifer of Dangermuffin. “That was the beginning,” Castillo said. “While I had a little niche, it wasn’t enough to keep going. So I moved a little bit into salsa, and then I had another group of people. I stayed in between for a while, kind of ‘salsa-jazz’ — that’s what I did for a while trying to build [a Latin music scene]. And I never stopped. I’m still doing it.”
Multi-instrumentalist Gino Castillo is synonymous with Holy City Latin music after 12 years leading Latin-jazz, salsa and traditional Cuban ensembles

Today, Castillo plays salsa music in Gino Castillo & the Cuban Cowboys, Latin jazz in the Gino Castillo Quartet and traditional Cuban music in Buena Vista Legacy Band. Legacy Band was born in 2019 when Charleston Music Hall director Charles Carmody enlisted Castillo for a filmed showcase performance in tribute to Cuban ensemble Buena Vista Social Club. And while the Covid-related shutdown stalled additional projects, Castillo knew he would continue Legacy Band one day. Currently, the group is working on an album in col laboration with artists in Charleston, New York, Cuba and Venezuela. Alongside the Charleston Jazz ensemble, the Legacy Band will take to the stage Sept. 17 at the Music Hall during the orches tra’s Cuban Carnival concert. Other per formers in the local lineup include pianist Abdiel Iriarte, percussionist Ron Wiltrout and upright bassist Jake Holwegner. Charleston’s own Cuban vocalist/pianist Iliana Rose and native vocalist/trumpeter Charlton Singleton will guest star. Cuban Carnival will feature two internationally acclaimed Cuban artists, superstar vocalist and renowned Cuban tres player Yusa and Latin Grammynominated percussionist Calixto Oviedo.
“The first one is a boleto,” he said, “super slow, very romantic. And the other one is more fun — telling you, ‘Don’t ask me why I love you so much, just come here and give me a kiss.’ ”
But as far as Castillo’s other projects go, he said the Buena Vista Legacy Band’s yetto-be-named album is expected to drop later this year. The upcoming album includes reworked classic Cuban songs, like the track, “Cómo Fue,” on which Singleton is featured. Castillo translated a portion of the Spanish lyrics into English, arranging a bilingual version on which both he and Singleton sing. The same goes for the old 1947 Cuban tune “Quizás Quizás Quizás,” on which Rose sings with Castillo. Singleton will also sing on the cha-cha version of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to The Moon.” Castillo’s original songs on the new album are love songs. One track, “Pardona,” which he wrote 15 years ago, has been rear ranged, yet still retains an old-school, horndriven sound. The other track he wrote about five years ago, “No Me Preguntes Por Qué,” is an upbeat dance song.
Chernicoff and her husband moved to Charleston in 2017 after she completed her master’s of music in violin performance at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. She finished her doctorate in music arts from University of Maryland, commuting between cities. She knew Charleston was the perfect spot to bring her dream of creating New Muse to fruition, and she founded the company in 2019. New Muse chamber concerts all have a unifying artistic theme, yet deviate from the classic format. “We give background on the composers: who they were, how they lived, what they were going through,” Chernicoff said. “We show how the pieces on the program were con structed and how they relate to each other, and we give an inside view into the process of rehearsing and performing. We invite you in.” Her first concert was an anniversary celebration at Principle Gallery Charleston on Meeting Street in 2019. Soon she was hosting more official New Muse events, including “Speakeasy,” a 1920s-themed program that took place just before the covid-related shutdown.
New Muse Concerts’ “From Chaos to Harmony” will take place Oct. 26 at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Visit newmuse.org.

New Muse will put on a show in October, “From Chaos to Harmony,” that explores the concept of the Greek ideal. Chernicoff’s own Trio Appassionata will perform, which includes her longtime friends and collabo rators cellist Andrea Casarrubios and pia nist Ronaldo Rolim. The trio has performed all over the world together for the last 15 years and recorded a 2014 album, Gone Into Night Are All the Eyes. Above all, Chernicoff is grateful to collab orate with artists of different backgrounds and disciplines in Charleston.
“None of this would be possible without our community here,” she said, “and it’s really been a thrill to see everyone get excited about what we’re doing and get involved.”

By Kate Bryan Music, literature and visual arts coalesce in the mind of seasoned violinist Lydia Chernicoff, who founded local chamber music project New Muse Concerts. “I want to change the conversation around classical music as being a formal and exclu sive art form,” Chernicoff told City Paper Musically ambitious from a young age and encouraged by creative parents, Chernicoff studied violin and chamber music. By age 18, she earned an associate’s degree in arts from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Massachusetts. “It was a time when I got really interested in how all of those things were or could be related to each other,” she said. “How lan guage and music and drama and visual art could all be a part of the same conversation.”

“We want these concerts to feel very casual,” she said. “The performances are at a very high level, but the atmosphere is lively and inviting, and you don’t have to know when to clap or what to wear. You can enjoy a glass of wine and some good conversation.” During the pandemic, New Muse part nered with the Charleston County Public Library to put on virtual concerts. Now the series is experimenting with creative in-person concert venues that have included breweries and art galleries.
