State expands birth control access at pharmacies

There’s a new way for South Carolina’s women to get access to birth control. In November, the S.C. Board of Medical Examiners and S.C. Board of Pharmacy issued a protocol that outlines how pharma cists have new powers to dispense some forms of hormonal contraceptives.

Until Nov. 16, women have had to go to their doctor annually to get prescriptions for contraceptives. But with these new rules in place, pharmacists can dispense contraceptives without the annual visit. Note, however, that the new protocol requires anyone not on birth control to get an initial doctor’s check-up and prescrip tion before any dispensing is done by phar macists. But after that, they can bypass the doctor’s office.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed the Pharmacy Access Act, which authorized pharmacies that meet the boards’ requirements to administer inject able contraceptives or dispense self-admin istered hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. Gov. Henry McMaster signed the bill into law May 23. Since then, the agencies have been working out the methods that pharmacies can use to pro vide the contraceptives to the public.

“Once the requirements as set forth in the protocols are met, pharmacists can dispense,” said Holly Beeson, counsel to the office of communications and governmental affairs at the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR).

“It is important to note that in South Carolina, pharmacists may dispense or administer these contraceptives via protocol.

This is not the same language as other states, which specify pharmacists can ‘prescribe,’ as South Carolina requires each participating pharmacy to have a standing order from a licensed prescriber,” Beeson said.

The law required the agency to issue new rules by Nov. 23. Guidelines were approved and added to the LLR website Nov. 16, Beeson said, but as of Nov. 29, no formal notification has been sent to pharmacies announcing the release of this information. LLR anticipates guidelines will be sent to pharmacies along with FAQs by the end of this week, Beeson told the City Paper Tuesday.

Big win for women

“Giving women easier access to birth con trol is a long-term collective goal of so many groups. This is a great step forward,” said Vicki Ringer, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. “We know that birth control is safe and effective … so safe, in fact, that contraceptives are sold off the shelf at stores in 120 industrial ized countries.”

Participation in the newly-authorized option by pharmacies in South Carolina is voluntary, which means not all pharmacies will offer the service. Check with your local pharmacy to learn more.

Nevertheless, advocates like Ringer say the new law will expand birth control access, particularly in rural areas, where pharmacies may be more easily acces sible than doctors’ offices. This law also eliminates the need for an annual doc tor’s visit before receiving a prescription, which saves women time and money.

Allowing women to obtain birth control without a doctor’s visit and a patient-specific prescription will mean a cost savings for so many women, especially those who are uninsured.”

Medical professionals, however, highly recommend that women visit their doctor sometime throughout the year for checkups and screenings.

“Allowing women to obtain birth control without a doctor’s visit and a patient-spe cific prescription will mean a cost savings for so many women, especially those who are uninsured. For everyone, this is a time saver,” Ringer said.

“We know that many unplanned preg nancies occur between birth control refills. Eliminating that time lapse while women may be waiting for a doctor’s appoint ment should reduce the number of missed birth control doses and, therefore, reduce unplanned pregnancies.”

The guidelines state that participating pharmacies may not dispense or administer contraceptives 24 months after the initial prescription without verification that the

Charleston among three counties in Biden’s disaster declaration

President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster exists in Charleston, Georgetown and Horry coun ties following Hurricane Ian in late September. The declaration opens up federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

According to the White House, “Assistance can include grants for tem porary housing and home repairs, lowcost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help indi viduals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.”

The White House said federal funding is also available to help with repair costs to state and local govern ments and some nonprofit organiza tions in Berkeley, Charleston, Clarendon, Georgetown, Horry, Jasper and Williamsburg counties. —Staff reports

New location on the horizon for homelessness resource center

The City of Charleston’s Hope Center, the one-stop resource center that opened in June to serve the community’s homeless population, is getting a new building.

It will be located on the peninsula in Wagener Terrace thanks to a fundraising campaign spearheaded by the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness. It is pro jected to open in late 2023 or early 2024.

“Seeing where the Hope Center started, I am excited about what the future looks like for us,” said LaTosha Jenkins-Fludd, the Hope Center’s director. “I’m excited that Mayor [John] Tecklenburg, the Mayors’ Commission, our service providers and our community partners continue to support us. This is a very large under taking, and we could not be as successful as we have been without help.”

The Hope Center’s fundraising cam paign is a collaborative effort between Tecklenburg, Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey as part of the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness. The cam paign has raised about $4.6 million of its $7 million goal over the past year. To donate, visit homelesstohopefund.org.

“The Hope Center is a wonderful opportunity to provide service opportuni

ties to the most vulnerable residents and the unsheltered in our community,” said Geona Shaw Johnson, director of the City of Charleston housing and community development department. “These services will lend to increasing self-sufficiency and hope [for the people] and households who need it the most.”

Helping the homeless

The Hope Center offers health care, housing and financial resources to the chronically homeless as well housed individuals and families who are facing instability. Fludd said the center has seen a recent increase in housed individuals who need rent and utility assistance, as well as seniors who have lost their homes.

She said the new building at 9 Cunnington Ave. will be easily accessible to a major CARTA bus line, which means more people in need can access Hope Center services.

“From our June opening up until the present, we have assisted around 170 people,” Fludd told the City Paper. “Needs vary from showers, clean sets of clothes, hygiene kits, hot meals, government cell phones and Medicaid and Medicare enrollment.”

The Hope Center has also connected individuals with its community part ners such as the Humanities Foundation, Palmetto Community Action Partnership, Trident United Way and the Palmetto Project, Fludd said.

of the Week

A Charleston police officer responded Nov. 13 to a reported disturbance near King Street Cabaret on upper King Street. Police reported a woman was shouting at a bouncer about her husband saying she was there to “piss him off.” The bouncer said she did doughnuts in her car in a parking lot and damaged a fence. She kept yelling that she wanted to upset her husband by becoming a cabaret dancer. She was arrested for disorderly conduct. No word on whether she got the gig.

High-end taste

Charleston police responded Nov. 14 to Sephora downtown after the store manager reported a theft. The manager said four women wearing masks stole 56 Tom Ford and Chanel perfumes totalling $9,060. They are still at large and probably smell great.

At least one was good-looking

A man with a dog was walking down town and threatening people, according to a Nov. 18 Charleston police report. An officer reported the man was visibly drunk and smelled like booze. The man told police he “probably had a pint” to drink before he was arrested for public intoxication. Police noted the man’s dog named Handsome was turned over to animal control. Sometimes good looks just aren’t enough.

Don’t

hanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of giving.

Now that you’ve given thanks for blessings revolving around your friends and family, it’s a good time to focus more on how we can all help people across the Lowcountry.

So as you’re out shopping for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa or even Festivus, let’s all consider giving back a little extra to organizations that do a lot of good for our communities.

While Tuesday was “Giving Tuesday” across the nation, we can use the next month to get more than a tax deduction. We can, as the Giving Tuesday people shout, transform our communities with “radical generosity” to allow local aid groups to do more of their good work.

Reporter Chelsea Grinstead offers more than two dozen ways for you to donate time or money to local charities in this week’s issue of the Charleston City Paper. Take a look and see if you can find a fit.

If you are concerned about climate change, you might want to consider helping groups like the Coastal Conservation League, Charleston Waterkeeper, the Center for Heirs Property Preservation, Charleston Surfrider, the Lowcountry Land Trust or the Center for Birds of Prey. North Charleston’s Water Mission provides clean water all over the world. At a state level, you could impact environmental policy by giving to the S.C. Wildlife Federation and the Conservation Voters of South Carolina. Or maybe your passion is building the capacity to lift up

families across the Lowcountry. You could help to alleviate hunger by giving to the Lowcountry Food Bank, the Lowcountry Blessing Box Project or East Cooper Community Outreach. You could help organizations to buy gifts, supplies and clothing through donations to Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Goodwill, Toys for Tots or the local Closet of Hope.

If you’re looking to help homeless people during the holidays, consider One80 Place and the Homeless to Hope Fund. Other organizations, such as the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center and Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina and My Sister’s House, help children and families with much-needed resources. Church-related organizations offer various ways to help, too. For example, Lutheran Services Carolinas is vital in relocating refugees from Ukraine, Afghanistan, the Congo and Guatemala.

If politics is your thing, we suggest you give to groups that bring people together, not political parties that seem to focus too much on division. Locally, you could support entities like the Coastal Community Foundation and Trident United Way. On a statewide level, two groups stand out for consistently promoting and strengthening democracy — the League of Women Voters of South Carolina and the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina.

As you can see, there are obviously more choices to which you can give than will fit in your wallet. The important thing, though, is to do something more. Thank you for whatever you can give.

Taylor’s delightful new book is a culinary treasure

Sometimes, in the South, it’s just about food. Now comes a culinary treasure for which we must sing hearty praises — food historian John Martin Taylor’s new book of essays, Charleston to Phnom Penh: A Cook’s Journal .

This collection of musings, some previously published, is a 240-page celebration of a life rooted in the South Carolina Lowcountry and influenced by food and wine from the Caribbean, France, Italy, eastern Europe and Cambodia, where Taylor now lives.

Taylor tells stories of 1960s food-focused trips as a boy from Orangeburg with his intellectual parents to then exotic American locations like New York and California. They might stay in modest hotels, he wrote, but they didn’t skimp on the food.

By the mid-1970s, Taylor was in graduate school at the University of Georgia where he happened to be friends with the nascent B-52s (they’re still friends today). “My apartment was occasionally the scene of wild dance parties. We would take turns manning the turntable because all our recordings were on vinyl.” He and his buddies would dance to everything from Motown to New Wave to old-time rock ‘n’ roll. Even today, he dances. “The kitchen is my dance hall. I have arthritis and a fake knee, but it is simply impossible for me NOT to dance to Junior Walker’s ‘Shotgun.’” (Go give it a listen now and see if you can resist.)

We met Taylor more than two decades ago on a lan guid porch at a historic Lowcountry plantation party where we immediately bonded over shrimp, drinks and lots of laughter. At the time, he was researching and writing about Southern foodways before Charleston was a foodie town. He also had a cookbook store, Hoppin’ John’s, at the corner of Anson and Pinckney streets in Charleston where you could sniff the pungent smells of carriage horses on any particu larly ripe day. Back then, Taylor explored food in books and for national publications in ways that were new and exciting.

These days in Charleston, you can’t walk a block without trip ping over a restaurant serving creamy shrimp and grits. But back in the 1980s, the city’s cuisine was much different — duller, stan dard fare without the emphasis on high-quality ingredients or the farm-to-table ethic.

In an essay from 2008, Taylor describes the rediscovery of stoneground, heirloom grits. “Most folks I knew were eating Quaker or Jim Dandy grits. Nasty stuff. No fat. No flavor. No wonder Yankees hated it. But I knew better … Farmers are growing tasty heirloom varieties of corn, and mills are grinding the whole grains.”

The book includes more than two dozen recipes that Taylor has collected through the years, including one for “gamberetti con polenta,” or Shrimp and Grits. The big keys: Use good grits and a stock that includes the heads and shells from fresh shrimp.

“I’m proud to have been a part of this movement and to have restored shrimp and grits to menus in Charleston, where, before my arrival there in the late 1980s, not a single restaurant that I know of was offering it.”

As culinary historian Jessica B. Harris writes in the book’s foreword, Taylor became “one of the founding saints of the fresh, regional, and local movement; and a voice to be reckoned with in a world of southern food.”

If you’re a lover of our regional dishes and you haven’t yet met John Martin Taylor through his multiple cookbooks, grab his latest book. And great goodness, don’t forget to try his recipes.

Local guides expand our understanding of Charleston history

Tours are not just for tourists. Charleston’s history, entrenched in centuries-old architecture and calming natural landscape, offers yearround delights to natives and long-time transplants. One thing is for certain: There’s always something new you can learn about what’s old in the Lowcountry.

Acknowledging the full extent of Charleston’s role in the slave trade, understanding Gullah Geechee culture, learning about the LGBTQ community’s past and con necting with the environment are topics often left out of standard tours geared towards visitors. But new tour companies now reconcile an often canned version of Charleston’s history with the exciting stories of the city’s past.

Bringing the past into the present

North Charleston native Akua Page started her own walking tour company, Geechee Experience, about a year ago.

“I was just frustrated with the lack of accurate his tory,” Page told the City Paper. On a tour of Charlestowne Landing years ago, she heard the guide say Charleston was founded by Native Americans, Africans and Europeans who worked together to build the city.

“I’m like, ‘That’s not what really happened though,’” she said. She became determined to tell the true story. “That’s what people want to know — they want to know what really happened.”

When Page realized there were no touring companies in her hometown of North Charleston, she was inspired to do something about the lack of common knowledge of the area’s history.

“Riverfront Park, the old naval base in North Charleston, used to be a rice plantation,” Page said. “There is no histor ical marker. There is nothing out there that acknowledges that history whatsoever. There’s also a small structure

called ‘The Dead House,’ and it’s claimed that nobody died there, but it was built during slavery.”

Page shares her own research into her Gullah Geechee heritage during her tours, which started with recording oral histories from her elders.

“I would say about 80% of the knowledge comes from sitting with my elders and from my experience growing up,” she said.

For Page, it’s important for people to experience home grown tours like hers so they can see the real Charleston and have conversations that bring healing.

“I know people say, ‘Why do we keep talking about the past? We need to move forward,’” she said. “But it’s hard to move forward if nobody is addressing the harm that has been done.”

Page’s Geechee Experience tour is not just about the past, but also the present.

“I talk about the now,” she said. “I bring it to the present and the future. I wrap it all together — how Gullah Geechee [people] are still living. I think what separates my

tours from other tours is that I’m showing people how we still balance between worlds — living in Western society and being Gullah Geechee. They’re getting more of a connection and personalized experience of Gullah Geechee culture in Charleston.”

“The Real Rainbow Row” Gullah Geechee culture is not the only part of history often overlooked in tours; few stories of the LGBTQ community in Charleston are widely known, which is what led Tyler Wright to launch her com pany Walk and Talk Charleston in 2018. “Charleston got a bad rap for kind of telling the Gone With the Wind version of history for a long time,” Wright said, “and I think the tour community, the hospitality industry in general and the education com munity have done a really good job of trying our hardest not to tell that story [anymore] and reassess the narratives that we tell.”

Though she grew up in Rye, New York, her father’s side of her family is from Virginia and her mother’s side from Bermuda, which sparked a curiosity about her family’s history. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Virginia and took a class called “Arts and Culture of the Slave South,” which was taught by two professors who worked for the Historic Charleston Foundation.

“It was really fascinating and refreshing to me,” she said. “They taught it in a way that I’d never heard before. [Other history tellings were] so drenched in [Civil War] Lost Cause history.”

Wright said she developed an interest in learning history outside the narrow con fines of traditional tellings. Now, she spends a lot of time researching and working with

College of Charleston’s Special Collections scholar-in-residence Harlan Greene, who provides historical knowledge for her tour, The Real Rainbow Row.

“I have a lot of friends and family who are part of the [LGBTQ] community, and I wanted to show support and show that this isn’t a new agenda. This has always been a part of our history,” she said.

“Particularly in light of what our gov ernor has said recently, I think it’s just that much more important to talk about the history. It’s history. It’s not a new lifestyle, it’s not a new part of our society,” Wright said, referencing Gov. Henry McMaster’s statement that he does not support gay marriage. The comment came during the governor’s Oct. 26 debate against former S.C. Rep. Joe Cunningham.

Retail Therapy for Mindful Women

During The Real Rainbow Row tour, Wright takes guests through cobblestone streets to historic downtown homes and landmarks to tell stories of important LBGTQ figures such as Prentiss Taylor, a gay artist from the Charleston Renassisance period, and Laura Bragg, a mentor to young queer people. She was the first woman to lead a public museum in the country. All proceeds from this tour go to the College of Charleston’s SC LGBTQ archives.

Wright’s tour also weaves in historical information and isn’t afraid to acknowledge ugly parts of Charleston’s history like white supremacy and homophobia. Walk and Talk Charleston also offers other unique tours such as her Classic Charleston History and Historic Gossip Tour.

Connecting to the water

Tia Clark, owner of Casual Crabbing with Tia, uses her experience to teach people how to crab and care for the natural environment.

“It’s the culture here,” she said. “This is my culture, Geechee culture — crabbing just goes hand-in-hand with my culture. And I think people that live here now all need to come crabbing. You learn some thing about the place that you live in … There’s a whole special way of living next to the water. And if you get a chance to live next to the water, you need to have a rela tionship with it.”

Clark, who grew up in downtown Charleston, instantly fell in love with crab bing when a cousin took her crabbing as an adult for the first time in 2017 at the Northbridge Park under the bridge off of Cosgrove Avenue.

“That changed everything,” she said. “I grew up knowing how to eat blue crabs. I can eat anybody under the table with blue crabs. All my traditions and memories have involved blue crabs, but somehow I never even connected the dots that this thing that I was eating, I could go and catch.”

Clark began crabbing every day after her first experience, and people who followed her Facebook page asked her to teach them. She turned people down for about a year, but after friends and family convinced her to join Airbnb Experiences in July 2018, a new business took off. Within three months, Airbnb flew her to San Francisco for a meeting because she offered one of the top four experiences in the world.

Now, Clark runs crabbing tours March through January from a private marina downtown. During the 2.5-hour experi ence, she teaches two ways to catch blue crabs: fishing with handlines and throwing a cast net.

“Folks come out and I teach them all about crabs — all of the weird facts — and I teach them two ways to crab, an easy way that really is kind of guaranteed for success and the harder, more traditional way. It’s

just a really active or laid-back experience. It can be whatever people want for their buck.”

At the end of the experience, Clark removes everything but the shell and meat from the caught crabs, breaking them into halves for guests so they can take their haul home to cook or bring it to the Charleston Crab House, which offers “you hook it, we cook.” The Crab House cooks and packages crab clusters for $12.99 along with two sides of your choice.

Clark said it is rewarding to share her knowledge of crabbing, Gullah Geechee culture and caring for the ocean. Many of her guests are locals who come back mul tiple times. Some previous guests have even taken up crabbing as a hobby and regularly send photos of their latest excursions.

Clark said she believes a connection with the water is essential for anyone, locals and tourists, and she tries to educate guests on conservation, too.

“We take people crabbing, and they take stuff out of the water, but we work hard to put stuff back in the water to make sure that things in the water can really thrive,” she said.

Clark sits on Charleston Waterkeeper’s board of directors and the S.C. Aquarium’s sustainability board. She also works closely with the state Department of Natural Resources’ Oyster Recycling and Enhancement program to build artificial reefs and recycle oyster shells.

“This whole journey has brought me closer to my family, and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m closer with my community, with the food I eat every day. It’s just the best time in my life right now.”

HEART artists create their own unique pieces, some of which are featured in this week’s auction

HEART leads the way for inclusion in Charleston arts community

HEART is hosting a virtual art auction now through Dec. 3, featuring the works of the HEART artists, endearingly referred to as “Creative Misfits,” as well as donated artworks from the surrounding artistic community to support its arts-based programming.

View the virtual exhibition at HEARTSC. org, or see selected works in person at the live rock show finale event, Creative Misfits Live, at the Charleston Pour House on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.

HEART is an inclusive arts community, providing visual arts, music and performing arts mentorships and community engage ment to adults with disabilities who want to grow and develop as artists.

“ ‘Creative Misfit’ is a term we have adopted for our selves as members of the HEART family,” said Rae Weekes, HEART’s assistant director. “We come from all walks of life and we certainly don’t mind standing out.

“We might not have perfectly ‘fit in’ elsewhere, but we’ve created a space to call our own that is full of love, acceptance and creative collaborations.”

Founder Farrah Hoffmire started HEART in 2014 with a vision to create community support for adults with special

needs who want to develop and identify as artists. Hoffmire was working as a volunteer yoga teacher for adults with dis abilities, learning more about the struggles these individuals and their families face after graduating from school. Hoffmire wanted to use her time and energy to help solve this problem by creating HEART, an inclusive community led by a team of pas sionate mentors. The long-term vision is to cultivate a community that Charleston residents and visitors want to experience and collaborate with.

HEART offers opportunities for adults with disabilities to create compelling art, form lasting relationships and foster com munity support. Weekes, who has worked at HEART since its inception, said they’ve come a long way in the last eight years.

“We started out creating a ‘HEART

Show’ every six weeks in our small rental space on Rutledge Avenue. Now, every year, we produce two ticketed original stage pro ductions with coinciding gallery exhibitions at local venues,” Weekes said.

“We are constantly learning and creating while surrounded by the most supportive, loving and authentic folks you’ll ever meet … We truly are a family.”

The auction and exhibition features works by the artists in the HEART community, as well as donated work from more than 25 artists, including Nick Kawczynski, Tami Boyce, Becca Barnet and Taylor Faulkner.

For the live show at the Pour House, expect “high-energy rock ‘n’ roll, a gorgeous variety of art and raucous fun with head banging and guitar shredding,” Weekes said.

“Our theme this year is ‘Iconic,’ so we will be featuring the most iconic music from the last half century of rock. We’ll emulate our favorite rock stars while we blast tunes live on the deck stage at the Charleston Pour House.”

The concert is led by performances from the HEARTists, plus some volun teer vocalists. The performers will be backed by Charleston musicians, including John Picard, Tadia White, Jeff Nark and Andrew Krepelka.

See Creative Misfits Live at the Charleston Pour House Dec. 3 at 6 p.m., or support the gallery exhibition and auction virtually. Tickets are on sale at heartsc.org/creativemisfits.

Venetown serves up the flavors of Venezuela

Husband and wife duo Rosi Pazos and Alfredo Betancourt noticed a lack of Venezuelan food in the Lowcountry when they moved to Charleston from Miami two years ago. With nowhere offering flavors of home, the pair decided to share a taste of their culture’s cuisine by starting Venetown, a Venezuelan food truck.

They initially launched the business one year ago as an online market selling Venezuelan brand name products like Flaquito chocolate wafers, Maltín malt beverages and a popular soda called Fress Kolita. Customers can still purchase these items, but also get a hot home-cooked meal from Venetown’s food truck.

“We want to share the flavors of Venezuela with the community because it’s a completely different taste,” Betancourt said. “When we say we are from Venezuela, a lot of people equate it to Mexican food because it is the food people here know. When people get the opportunity to try our food, it’s awesome because they are exposed to new flavors.”

Customers especially enjoy the contrast of sweet and salty flavors, Betancourt said, which can be found throughout the menu, but singled out cachapas as a prime example of opposing flavors working in harmony.

Cachapas are a sweet corn pancake, often filled with queso de mano, a soft white Venezuelan cheese. When diners

order cachapas, they can enjoy them with just cheese, or add proteins like pork belly, shredded beef or picanha (a Brazilian cut of beef similar to sirloin).

The most popular dish on the menu, however, is arepas (flat, round cornmeal cakes). The food truck offers four flavors that change weekly.

“Each arepa has a nickname in Venezuela depending on how you prepare it,” Betancourt explained. “We prepare one called ‘llanera’ with grilled picanha, sea salt and Venezuelan white cheese,” Betancourt said.

Other popular flavors include queso, cochino frito (pork belly), pelua (shredded beef) and catira (shredded chicken). The food truck also serves beef, chicken and cheese empanadas. If you’re looking for a smaller-sized snack, the family-owned business also offers mini empanadas.

Customers can choose from three dif ferent sauces to complement their meal: homemade cilantro and garlic, sweet corn and a spicy sauce.

Another popular menu item is tequenos, which are cheese sticks wrapped in dough and deep-fried. Betancourt explained that guava and cheese is an especially popular combination, but customers can also order plain cheese or cheese and plantain.

The sweet and salty goodness does not end there: Enter the golfeado.

“Golfeado is a popular Venezuelan des sert that looks like a cinnamon roll, but it’s more of a bread and it has cheese, but it’s

also sweet,” Betancourt said. “Every bite is sweet and salty so it’s a little different.”

Pazos and Betancourt want customers to feel like they are eating in the couple’s home, and they go to great lengths to source true Venezuelan ingredients. Every two weeks, Betancourt hops in his minivan for the 584-mile drive to Miami to stock up on ingredients that have not made an appearance in Charleston just yet.

“Hard work to have good results,” Bentancourt added.

The food truck owner noted that he is starting to see more Venezuelan products in local stores, but for now, he still makes the trip every two weeks.

If you want a taste of Venezuelan cuisine, head to Container Bar Tuesday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

A la carte

What’s new?

Victor’s Seafood & Steak opens Dec. 1 in the space formerly occupied by Michael’s on the Alley at 39F John Street. Victor’s will offer items such as a seafood tower, lobster bisque, classic steakhouse entrees and more.

Brasserie la Banque is offering two new caviar specials to commemorate its first year. The Taste and Toast specials include duck fat gaufrettes (similar to a waffle fry) with crème fraîche and hackleback caviar for $50 and bite-sized potato croquettes with crème fraîche and osetra caviar for $85. The offers are available now through New Year’s Eve.

Quinte Oyster Bar is now open at The Pinch hotel on George Street. Quinte offers a rotating daily menu of fresh seafood dishes like seafood towers, stone crab claws and crab and green farro, as well as a wide selection of local oysters.

What to look for

Little Palm transformed into Little Pine for the winter season now through Feb. 15. Holiday decor with a tropical twist fills the space, along with holidaythemed food and beverage options.

Emeline is hosting a tree lighting event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The annual event showcases work from local event designer Tara Guérard, and offers holiday treats, shopping, live performances and festive photo booths.

Congratulations

Ashley Hale celebrates a rich R&B legacy

Powerhouse vocalist Ashley Hale was born into a musical family, and her vocal prowess first became clear at just 5 years old when she sang in church. By 13, she landed her first lead theatrical role. Since then, Hale has continued to grace stages across the country and internationally in what she describes as “strong soul” parts, bringing together her love of singing with her passion for acting.

Hale will take center stage at Fox Music House in North Charleston Dec. 3 during a tribute to soul music icon Gladys Knight as part of the local live music series called Peace, Unity, & Revival Through Entertainment (P.U.R.E.) produced by local singer Zandrina Dunning.

“Gladys Knight is, I would say, one of the greatest singers of all time,” Hale told the City Paper. “Her voice and her songs transcend through time. I love her musical penmanship.”

Hale treasures Knight’s music with The Pips from the 1970s just as much as she loves her contemporary albums, and she is not the only one. Knight, affectionately known as the “Empress of Soul,” celebrates a multi-decade career featuring genredefining performances of ’60s and ’70s soul music such as “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia,” in addition to a bevy of other R&B and pop hits in subsequent decades. She’s a seven-time Grammy winner, an inductee in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Rolling Stone named her one of the 100 greatest singers of all time.

Hale is a strong proponent of tribute per formances, which she sees as chances to honor the timelessness of music no matter the decade and preserve the legacy of iconic artists.

“To me, this is our way to pay homage to these artists,” she said. “Sometimes we pay homage to someone that is deceased — like Michael Jackson, James Brown, Aretha Franklin — but who actually needs to be paid homage are people who are still alive.

They can still hear and see these things and see that their music is being kept alive.”

The Charleston singer credits her mother for her diverse musical educa tion, which is centered in gospel but also included classic jazz, soul and R&B per formers. She names other icons like Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner alongside jazz giants like Nat King Cole and Gregory Porter as among her favorites.

“My mom introduced me to music,” Hale said, “and music and acting ended up in the same arena for me.”

Hale has frequently appeared as backing vocalist in previous P.U.R.E. concert series, which highlight local, regional and national artists. The series has organized tributes to R&B and soul icons like Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Luther Vandross, all of which Hale performed in as a supporting artist. When Dunning and her musical director Stephen Washington approached Hale about taking the lead role in a tribute show to open season three of the P.U.R.E. concert series, Hale imme

diately thought of Gladys Knight.

“Some music transcends time, but music is always moving and changing,” Hale said. “We know we can keep it alive and keep it relevant for future generations — especially for those that have already grown up with the music — and reminisce on what it was.”

North Charleston artist Patch Whisky can make any thing more colorful, from walls and canvases to bottles and suitcases, even street signs. His self-described “pop surrealism” creations take on a mind of their own and keep him working 12 hours a day almost five days a week tucked away in his Park Circle studio. His artistic process goes well with eclectic music all over the genre spectrum. Whisky gave City Paper his top albums that get his “creative juices goin’”:

The Midnight City releases eclectic pop tunes

The Midnight City has been well known in the Charleston area as a popular party band for the past 10 years, but the dynamic fourpiece releases original music as well. The indie pop outfit’s new EP Infinite Summer unfolds four very different tunes, bringing to light a wide spectrum of musical personality.

Guitarist Brian Jarvis and keyboardist Taylor Jarvis share lead vocals, often harmonizing with bassist Joel Chinloy, and drummer Joey Tran rounds out the ensemble. Infinite Summer is a follow up to the band’s 2019 EP Heartdream

The first track, “About Us,” is a pure sugar-rush guitar rocker, a streamlined, insistently pulsing tune that wouldn’t have sounded out of place coming out of a car radio in the mid-’80s.

The second song, “It’s Not Me, It’s You” is a cavernous, synth-driven kiss off, a breakup song with a great point-counterpoint vocal battle between Brian and Taylor Jarvis.

The EP goes cosmic on the third track, “Space Cowboy,” which sounds more modern than the first two songs. Taylor takes the lead here, and the electronic background sounds like Chvrches or Purity Ring.

The EP closes out with a complete change of pace, a charging rocker with country accents called “For The Better.”

It’s a heck of a collection of songs, and the EP, the band’s second after its 2019 project “Heartdream” was immaculately produced at Brian’s Hanahan recording studio, the popular Anchor + Pine Studio.

Brian said that the title of the EP, Infinite Summer, was definitely chosen because of the general windows-down vibe of the songs.

“These are songs that kind of felt that they could be good for the summer, but they would transition into kind of that fall style a little bit,” he said.

Midnight City didn’t necessarily need to do original songs — they make a good living as a cover or “variety” band — but Brian said that their two EPs are both an outlet for the act’s creativity and a response to fan feedback.

“I think it’s just the passion of being musi cians — we just wanted that creative outlet,” he said. “So we started just with the cover stuff and then we built such a reputation and a following that people were asking us to do originals. Cover music allows us to pay our bills, but still be creative and come out with originals without the fear of needing to supply our income.”
