Bus rapid transit project enters final design stage

The Lowcountry Rapid Transit project (LCRT), the biggest overhaul to public transportation that the state has ever seen, has entered its final phase before construction, which is set to begin as early as 2026.

Led by the Berkeley-CharlestonDorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), the 23-mile infrastructure project has been in development since 2016, when it started with little more than a roadmap — no pun intended. The next six years were spent on background planning, research and community engagement, a process that project leaders say is ongoing as the LCRT nears construction.

“Now, the engineer of record has begun to finalize the design,” said Mike Seekings, chairman of CARTA and Charleston City Council member. “We’re taking it from 30% of design completion to 100%. It’s hard to say when you’ll start to see actual dirt flying — I suspect once we get close to a final design we will do another round of community engagement.”

After a recent visit from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., an additional $100 million in federal funding was listed on President Joe Biden’s budget earlier this year specifically for the LCRT project. Seekings said it was no coincidence, and that national leaders were looking to Charleston to change the way the country views and manages public transportation.

Some pieces left behind

The design has already undergone some significant changes from the initial concept. While the core remains intact — a bus rapid transit system connecting North Charleston to downtown’s hospital district — the project suffered a significant loss in the cutting of bus stations linking the system to downtown Summerville.

A federal study estimated Summerville ridership to be too low for the project to extend that far north, according to Ron Mitchum, BCDCOG executive director. The low estimate put the entire project’s federal

funding at risk, he said, so the decision was made to move LCRT ahead without the Summerville stations.

Connecting the LCRT line to downtown Summerville is still a long-term goal, however, Mitchum and Seekings agreed.

“The numbers didn’t work for Summerville,” Seekings said. “But we’re looking at routes to get there, and we will get there eventually. It just didn’t pencil out this time.”

Trumpeter Singleton to head MOJA Festival

Charlton Singleton, a founding member of the two-time Grammy Award-winning band Ranky Tanky, on Wednesday became artistic director of the MOJA Arts Festival, a multidisciplinary annual festival produced by the City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs. Singleton, who said he was “honored and grateful” for the role, will assist in presenting the 2023 festival and guide its artistic planning and program development for future events, city officials said.

The MOJA Festival is produced with the MOJA Planning Committee, a volunteer community arts and cultural group. The festival highlights AfricanAmerican and Caribbean cultural heritage. —Staff reports

Service from Summerville to the North Charleston Fairgrounds’ LCRT station will be provided through the TriCounty Link bus system, which services riders throughout Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties. Some advocates, however, say this may not be enough.

Sunflower lanyards to signal change in Charleston

College of Charleston (CofC) psychology professor Cindi May and her community action teammates call themselves the Sunflower Seeds. Why? Because it’s a play on words to raise awareness of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower (HDS) program projected to launch on campus in October.

Through the new program, CofC will offer people with hidden disabilities the option to wear a sunflower lanyard, which signals to campus personnel that the wearer may occasionally need additional support or assistance.

The lanyard system is useful for many people with unseen disabilities, such as those with autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimzer’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, hearing impairment and other conditions. The opt-in program allows those with disabilities to still receive help without having to explain their situation.

“If I saw someone on campus wearing a lanyard,” May told the Charleston City Paper, “I might stop and say, ‘Hey, can I provide any additional support? Do you need any help navigating?’ Or if they responded in a way that was unexpected, then I would have some knowledge that this unexpected response might derive from the fact that they have a disability that I don’t understand.”

Part of a global initiative

The concept comes from a global initiative at HDS’s 2016 Sunflower Lanyard Scheme project at Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom. It rolled out a training program in 2020 for registered businesses and organizations.

In the Lowcountry, the Sunflower Seeds are reaching out to businesses and institutions to recruit as many organizations as possible to train with the HDS program.

Charleston International Airport has already signed on to offer sunflower lanyards starting April 15, said Caroline Connolly, public affairs manager for the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

The Lowcountry Children’s Museum will also launch the HDS lanyard system June 5, said Director of Education Jennifer Sanders.

“What’s beautiful about it is you don’t have to come with a pound of documentation,” May said. “All you have to do is ask for a lanyard.”

May said wearing the sunflower lanyard in public settings can also be helpful for those with atypical social responses by indicating that the wearer may need extra

Lawmakers eyeing port, rail transportation issues

State lawmakers are planning to discuss the underused port facility at the Leatherman Terminal on the Cooper River and railroad transportation safety following train derailments across the country and in South Carolina.

S.C. Rep. Matt Leber, R-Charleston, said the Charleston County Legislative Delegation will meet in the coming weeks to discuss the $1 billion Leatherman Terminal at the former navy base. No time or date has been set for the meeting, he said.

Cindi May (back row, second from left) and the Sunflower Seeds team are recruiting Charleston organizations to support people with hidden disabilities

support and compassion, such as repeated directions or additional support in navigating an environment.

She said the lanyard would be helpful in college settings such as the bookstore or cafeteria line in case someone needs assistance or just a “little bit more grace” if they are moving more slowly than their peers.

Since CofC has a classroom system in place for people with disabilities, the sunflower lanyard will mostly benefit individuals while walking throughout campus, although there are classroom benefits as well.

“Let’s say I have a student who is chronically late to my class,” May said. “If this person were wearing a lanyard, then I might approach them differently. I might say, ‘Hey, I noticed that you’re struggling to get here on time. Is there something that I can do to support you getting here on time, or can you talk to me a little bit about what’s going on?’ ”

How to get involved

The lanyard system only works if the community is aware of what the emblem means and if people are willing and eager to respond appropriately, May said. That’s why raising awareness is important.

May participated last year in Furman University’s Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative to identify community impact projects and came across the HDS program.

“The beauty of the training is it’s eight minutes total,” May said. “And it basically explains: What is the hidden disability? Why are people wearing these lanyards? And how can you appropriately support someone with a hidden disability?”

The Sunflower Seeds have created an easy online guide for interested organizations at tinyurl.com/sowingsunflowers.

“It’s really quick because you’re not asking people to do anything extraordinary — you’re just asking them to recognize that there are some people whose days are more difficult to navigate because of an inherent disability and [teaching them to] offer a little bit more support and grace.”

May said the hospitality industry nonprofit Explore Charleston and the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry are also committed to implementing personnel training and offering lanyards.

S.C. Rep. Joe Bustos, R-Mount Pleasant, previously told the Charleston City Paper the meeting would happen this week.

The Leatherman Terminal, operated by the State Port Authority (SPA), is experiencing an apparent work slowdown during a labor dispute between the SPA and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents dockworkers.

The union and the SPA disagree over which organization should operate the new ship-to-shore cranes at the Leatherman Terminal. The National Labor Relations Board ruled last year the ILA can operate the cranes at the Leatherman Terminal and not SPA employees. The Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has asked both sides to file legal briefs and responses before May 26.

“There is reason to be optimistic that” there could be a solution to resolve the slowdown at the Leatherman Terminal, Leber said. Lawmakers, he said, will meet in the coming weeks. “We have some important issues that we need to take up, and I think that is going to happen,” he added.

Bustos, who was recently elected the delegation’s chairman, said, “We need to get an answer on the Leatherman Terminal. I know that anything that impedes getting those containers through and moved out to the inland port, either by train or by truck, is important. At some point, there is going to be a point of diminishing returns.”

Liz Crumley, the SPA’s corporate communications manager, declined to

discuss the court case.

A drop in container ship traffic is expected to be temporary “as we work towards a solution,” Crumley said in a text message to the City Paper. The SPA, she said, “is hopeful that we can work with the ILA to achieve a solution that will allow for full utilization of the Leatherman Terminal and preservation of the growth trajectory our port has experienced that creates more jobs for both S.C. Ports employees and ILA members.

“Leatherman Terminal remains open and operational,” she added. “S.C. Ports remain committed to providing excellent service and fluidity for our customers’ supply chains, alongside our maritime partners.”

Charles Brave Jr., president of the ILA Local 1422 in Charleston, said the members of three local dockworkers unions are losing money because the SPA is directing container ships away from the Leatherman Terminal to the Wando Welch Terminal on the Wando River in Mount Pleasant.

“I wish the State of South Carolina and the ILA can settle this,” he said. “The state and the union are hurting the most.” SPA employees operate the cranes at the Wando Terminal and at other SPA facilities.

In a text message to the City Paper, Crumley wrote the SPA is not diverting ships from the Leatherman Terminal. Some of the shipping companies are docking at the “Wando due to ongoing litigation, which we hope to resolve soon for the benefit of our port, our maritime community and port-dependent businesses,” she wrote.

Railroad safety

continue to support it in its current, diminished form; however, there are some serious defects in the current plan,” said local activist William Hamilton. “The line no longer reaches downtown Summerville or Lincolnville. It now stops at the fairgrounds and will rely on the proven-inadequate Link rural bus service to reach Summerville.”

A total transformation

Despite some changes, the most significant portions of the original idea are still in place, including dedicated bus lanes from Medical Plaza Drive in Goose Creek to Reynolds Avenue in North Charleston, traffic light prioritization for LCRT buses and several new pedestrian access points along the Rivers Avenue corridor in North Charleston.

“Obviously, it’s going to be great for the mass transit system, but it has a lot of safety

February introduced a bill in the S.C. House of Representatives that would require more safety training for railroad workers and measures to hold rail companies more accountable for accidents. Companies should also be required to have on-hand specialized equipment to respond to the spills of dangerous chemicals, he said.

The lawmakers also introduced a resolution calling for one week in September to be set aside as Rail Safety Week. The resolution would encourage community groups across the state to hold safety forums with railroad executives.

Gilliard has been in Washington, D.C. to meet with U.S. lawmakers to discuss rail safety. He met Tuesday with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont. Gilliard said he also wanted to meet with U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., and U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga. He’s traveling with S.C. Rep. Robert Q. Williams,

D-Florence, and former Charleston City Councilman Kwadjo Campbell.

Gilliard recently discussed the bill with John Dillard, director of state relations for CSX Transportation, and Patrick McCrory, president and CEO of Palmetto Railways. They attended a closed-door meeting recently in North Charleston with representatives of two neighborhood associations and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Gillard said he invited Dillard and McCrory to speak with Black caucus and Democratic caucus members in Columbia in the next two weeks “to give us some ideas on any amendments they’d want us to add to the bill.”

The meeting in North Charleston was held in the wake of recent accidents involving trains which have adversely affected people and the environment.

On Feb. 3, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed near East Palestine, Ohio. It is one of more than a dozen rail accidents reported since the start of the new year. A CSX train jumped the tracks Feb. 13 at Enoree in Spartanburg County. No injuries or spills were reported.

A Johns Island man reportedly called Charleston police March 6 to show the “intruders” in his home after he beat them with a crowbar. When police arrived, the man lifted his couch to show them the “intruders,” who, naturally, were not there. Another person at the scene told police that the man has a history of calls like this, including a past call in which he fired a pistol multiple times at the “intruders.”

Just move your car

North Charleston police on March 3 responded to a call after a Circle K clerk activated the wrong gas pump for a customer and the customer became “irate,” claiming the clerk was racist. The situation escalated before police arrived with the clerk locking the store’s doors and refusing to activate the correct pump. You know, the Blotter would be a lot shorter if everyone would just grow up and be nice.

improvements along the whole corridor too,” Mitchum said. “There are miles-long stretches of Rivers Avenue without a single crosswalk; we have a lot of areas missing sidewalks. This will give a lot of people moving on foot or on bikes a safe way to get around, so there are a lot of benefits even for folks who don’t ride the bus.”

Big changes to come include a massive undertaking at one of the most dangerous intersections in the state — Remount Road and Rivers Avenue. According to a video essay on the LCRT project website, the intersection will be changed to prevent traffic on Remount Road from turning left onto Rivers, protecting

bus lanes and pedestrian crosswalks while keeping traffic flowing along the corridor.

Project leaders say they are already looking ahead to construction and working to ensure there is as little disruption to traffic flow as possible.

“It’s going to look like a construction project,” Seekings said. “But it is going to be done in a way that will be sensitive to the areas it will be going through. The changes are going to be so much for the better, especially once you get to the North Charleston corridor. It’s going to be a game changer, and the hope is that it won’t be that interruptive.”

A North Charleston middle-schooler was reported to police March 3 for threatening gun violence against the school. The student told officers he was talking about a video game, Fortnite. Maybe all of those parents blaming violent video games for all the world’s problems had a point.

The Blotter is taken from reports filed with area police departments between March 3 and March 11.

f you have become enamored with using the word “woke” to describe what’s happening in politics, it’s time to, well, wake up. You’re being used by language.

“Wokeness” is nothing more than a B.S. linguistic frame to stir and steer your thoughts in ways that are a modern-day conservative equivalent of those hippies who looked at the world through rose-colored glasses.

MAGA-enhanced Republicans on language steroids are trying to get you to believe that regular Americans who are kind, inclusive, thoughtful and respect diversity and freedom are little more than pawns in a cabal to take away your guns, gender and religion. Hogwash.

What these zealots really want you to do is step back in time to an America filled with more racism and less opportunity. They want a new-day version of plantation economics and a society built on fundamentalism, fear and a convenient rewrite of history that ignores the American dream for all, regardless of skin color or economic status. When it comes down to brass tacks, they want our shining experiment with democracy and the marketplace for ideas and capitalism to fail, only to be replaced by an autocratic tyranny.

Resist.

Linguist George Lakoff wrote a popular 2004 political manifesto for progressives on how to frame issues politically. The book, Don’t Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate, instantly highlights the power of words — once you’re told to not think of an elephant, you can’t get the image of an elephant out of your head.

Now almost 20 years later, conservatives have hoisted progressives on Lakoff’s linguistic petard with all of this “wokeness” nonsense — insisting that Americans reinterpret how they think of culture in a cynical and fully transparent

ploy to brush past reality.

What’s sad — and kind of funny — is that conservatives use this “woke” language without really being able to explain it. Fox News talk show host Dana Perino couldn’t give a clear definition recently, eventually likening it to a “feeling” like a Supreme Court justice’s description of obscenity — “I know it when I see it.”

Right-wing author Bethany Mandel recently froze like a deer in headlights when asked to define “wokeness” — the topic of a book she wrote. Later, she claimed she had a panic attack during the interview, but a viral video clip led comic book writer Dan Slott to joke, “The far right is starting to use ‘woke’ in the all-purpose way that Smurfs say ‘smurf.’”

Republican presidential candidates, desperately trying to stir audiences, throw about wokeism like beads at Mardi Gras to attack progressives and political correctness. Former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, for example, recently pandered, “Wokeness is a virus more dangerous than any pandemic, hands down.” Really? The term comes up frequently in speeches by former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. It’s like they have a new word toy and can’t keep from playing with it.

Most Americans see through the nonsense. According to a recent USA Today/Ipsos poll, 56% of people surveyed — including a third of Republicans — said wokeness meant “to be informed, educated on and aware of social injustices.” They didn’t buy the conservative wordsmithing link to political correctness.

“Most Americans understand that to be woke is to be tuned in to injustices around us,” Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said. “But for a key segment of Republicans who make up the TrumpDeSantis base, ‘woke’ is a clear trigger for the worst of the politically correct, emerging multicultural majority.”

Don’t get fooled that “wokeism” is a real thing. It’s something they want you to believe.

NATIONAL HIGH NOON Launch Party

Is Charleston’s restaurant scene evolving or dying?

The phrase is simple, “Evolve or die.” Something so trite and cliché is still one of the most profound sayings of our time. Yet as humans, we loathe change.

Charleston has done an impeccable job over the years of keeping outsiders from changing our restaurant scene. Acclaimed chefs have come, only to have failed or never even get started. Now Beemok Hospitality, backed by local billionaire Ben Navarro, has partnered with a California-based restaurateur, the MINA Group, to bring us a stunning new passion project, a restaurant called Sorelle. Does this holy trinity of deep pockets, celebrity chef and blind ambition hurt or help our tight-knit restaurant community?

Please understand: This commentary isn’t an anti-Sorelle piece. In fact, having moved here from Los Angeles eight years ago, this new eatery defines the opulence I initially expected from an amazing food city. Be that as it may, three years ago I started the Facebook group Lowcountry Eat Out! to support independent, locally owned restaurants during 2020. Since then, I have gotten to know, admire and respect many independent restaurant teams — which is why when I saw the insanely deep, California-like, investor money involved with Sorelle, my very (professional) first thought was, “Oh sh*t! This isn’t good.”

When I lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the average restaurant was more like a hedge fund of investors. One or two big players often followed up with close to 100 others from celebrities to tech executives who “dabbled” in restaurant investments. That money drove the intricately designed spaces, instigated over-the-top public relations, paid for the astronomical rents and got talent hired for a steep price. Comparatively, Charleston restaurant investors often are of a smaller caliber and, many times, are an “investor,” singular.

Beemok’s goal is “enriching lives through extraordinary experiences.” It curated this passion project with a money-doesn’t-matter vibe. It was mentioned on its industry night from management that this restaurant can “easily be written off as a loss for years to come. Money is not a concern as this space was created for the owner.” This troubling combination makes me wonder what small local restaurant or investor group has that ability? Seriously, who can compete?

Sadly, none of our local talent was tapped to be at the helm. But Sorelle did bring in some incredible front- and back-of-house experience. At the same time, hourly employees are those from our area’s already understaffed restaurants. With a billionaire’s endless pockets comes beyond competitive pay which means, once again, Charleston is cannibalizing our near anorexic staffing situation.

One step inside Sorelle’s three townhome conversion, you will see elegance on a level far surpassing what locals are used to seeing in restaurants here. The concept is fully built out in the guests’ eyes and yet still feels somewhat local. All of this eye-candy can quickly make this girl forget the bigger issues.

As I talk to local restaurants downtown that are feeling the staffing pinch as the busy season looms, one common conversation comes up. Sorelle is offering positions to restaurant employees. Now I am all for capitalism. If you have a great work environment your staff will stay loyal. But Sorelle is offering $1-$2 per hour more plus overtime in excess of 15 to 20 hours a week for back-of-house employees like cooks and dishwashers. Kind of goes with what management was saying, endless pockets. Leveraging finances to get what is necessary is not uncommon in business, but how do our smaller backed restaurants afford that?

Beemok has the potential to create affordable food and beverage industry housing while marketing to attract hourly employees from bigger cities or culinary schools to create a new wave of restaurant employees for it and for our city. Furthermore, its success will open the door for more celebrity chefs with deep-pocket investors to come. Creating similar scenarios.

For now, how do our current small independent restaurants compete? These are businesses that are a part of the fabric of our community. They donate to our charities, kids’ programs, sponsor teams and more.

Evolution is inevitable. Our Charleston restaurant scene is not immune to that — nor should it be. From celebrity chefs to deep-pocket investors, we are always an attractive place to be. So let’s work together to lift up our Charleston food scene.

UNDERSTANDING intimacy

EDITOR’S NOTE: Starting in April, the City Paper will offer a monthly column by nationally recognized relationship coach Dr. Jane Guyn. In this cover story, we introduce her thoughts on three issues related to understanding intimacy.

Waiting for the invitation

Dear Dr. Jane,

I’m married to a wonderful person who uses the pronouns they/them. Our sex life is pretty good. Even though we only do it every few weeks, we both experience pleasure. When we’re done, we wonder why we don’t do it more. My problem is that they never initiate. A few days later, I’m interested but I’m the only one who ever suggests it. I wait around but nothing happens. It feels awkward. I wish my partner would show me that they want me. How can we fix it?

—Waiting  for the invitation

Dear Waiting,

Lots of my clients talk to me about the problem of initiation. When one partner feels like they’re the only person who suggests sex, they feel like the other person is participating out of obligation. This is understandable but not necessarily correct.

If you want to know why your partner isn’t initiating, you need to investigate the

fundamental nature of sexual desire. Many people have “responsive desire” as described by Emily Nagoski in her great book Come As You Are (2015).

Nagoski defines “responsive desire” as desire in response to sexual pleasure, such as physical stimulation like kissing or touching. This type of desire is especially common in people who need higher amounts of pleasure to get turned on. It’s very different from “spontaneous desire.”

Nagoski defines “spontaneous desire” as when a person wants sex immediately after getting turned on by a specific stimulus — a sexual thought, image, sound or scent. It is desire in anticipation of pleasure. People with spontaneous desire typically require less stimulation to get turned on.

As the spontaneous desire person in your relationship, you might have decided to “wait out” your responsive desire partner. That might seem like a good idea, because you think that your partner will eventually hit you up for physical intimacy. I get it. This is how you would feel. But, waiting for your responsive desire partner to initiate sex while you get frustrated doesn’t work. Your partner isn’t likely to get turned on without you providing sexual stimulation.

Don’t worry

Even if you’re the spontaneous desire partner, you don’t always have to be the one to initiate connection. Even though your partner has reactive desire, you don’t have to always do the heavy lifting of initiating physical intimacy. Do these three things to make the situation better:

1. Talk about it

My first suggestion — talking! Talking about your sex life — including who makes the invitation for connection — is often challenging. But it’s important to get your feelings out into the open. Tell your partner how you feel when they don’t offer physical intimacy or affection. They may not understand that the situation makes you feel unattractive or even unloved.

2. Don’t take it personally

The truth is that your partner’s desire is more about them than it is about you. The issue of responsive versus spontaneous desire is important, but there are many things that might keep your partner from getting turned on. They include hormone levels, fatigue, distraction, a lack of privacy, body image issues, power dynamics, erotic fantasies and more. Your relationship is only one of the things that impacts their desire.

3. Make a plan to alternate initiation — but make it easy for your partner

You can make a plan to alternate initiation even when the way you get turned on is very different from the way they get turned on. Understand that being overt can be challenging for your responsive desire partner. Allow them to signal you their willingness without words. One idea would be for them to light a specific candle when they’re open to connection. Your job will be to notice the invitation and then to take time kissing and touching so that they can get warmed up slowly after opening the door to you. You got this.

Feeling kinky in 2023

Dear Dr. Jane, I’ve been married to my wife for over 10 years. In many ways, we have a healthy sex life. We do it twice a week, and she’s pretty open when I ask. Even though we do a lot, I’m bored. It’s the New Year and I want to make changes. We only use one or two positions. I want to try sex toys. I want to experiment with some kinky stuff like spanking or bondage. My biggest fantasy is having a threesome, but I’m worried she’ll freak out if I suggest it. I love her but things are stale in the bedroom at our house. What should I do?

—Feeling kinky in 2023

Dear Kinky, I often hear this concern from clients. Life gets routine, and the sex that was satisfying when you first met feels stale. I love it that your wife is open to fairly frequent sex. A lot of busy couples have trouble making love twice a week. It’s great that you’ve got ideas about what you’d like to try. Your sexual bucket list is creative. Good for you! The word “kink” is interesting. One of the definitions of “kink” is “bizarre or unconventional sexual preferences or behavior.” In my mind, the things you’re imagining aren’t particularly bizarre or unconventional. You nailed the No. 1 fantasy for American couples, which is having a threesome. It’s a great fantasy (and some couples make that fantasy a reality), but bringing another person into your bed is a lot more challenging than using sex toys or trying new positions. Start with something easy and make progress. Here’s my advice:

Step 1: Think about it

Think about how your wife might feel about the things you’re interested in. Be as compassionate as possible as you think about her. How was she raised? What have her experiences been like as a sexual person over the years? Has she struggled to be open talking about sex in general? Has she experienced sexual trauma or assault during her life? What kinds of attitudes, values and beliefs does she have about sex and physical intimacy? Does she seem to enjoy the sex you have together? Your sensitivity about her feelings and past experiences will help you have a conversation where she doesn’t feel ambushed or criticized. It’s completely OK to have desires and fantasies, but before you present them to her, think about it.

Step 2: Talk about it

Set up a time to talk with your wife about your sex life when you’re both relaxed. Make sure that you have plenty of privacy so that you can speak freely. Tell her how much you love her and that you want to talk about how things have been going. Ask her how she’s been feeling about your sex life. Who knows — she might be feeling the same way you’ve been feeling. Make sure she knows you want to talk about it because you want things

to be even better than they are now. Ask if she has pleasure during your love making sessions. Are there things that she’d like to add into your sex life, too?

Step 3: Start with something easy

I hope your conversation will go well, and you’ll both be open to making some fun changes. Talk with her about how she might feel on top or with you behind her if these aren’t things you usually do together. If she’s open to it, maybe include the threesome idea as a fantasy without implementing it. Sexy shopping can be a great field trip or virtual activity for a special date night. It can be fun to start by exchanging massages or reading erotic stories out loud. Whatever you do, be compassionate and understanding. Your intimate relationship is worth it. You got this.

Bad in bed

Dear Dr. Jane,

I’m a man who’s been married to a wonderful woman for over 10 years. We have a healthy sex life, but I’ve noticed that my wife isn’t very passionate when we make love. It seems like she wants me to hurry up and finish. This makes me think that she doesn’t really like what I’m doing. Can you please give me some pointers so I’m better? I want to be an amazing lover, but I worry that I’m bad.

Dear Bad,

I’m so glad that you reached out because most people approach this problem the wrong way. You want to be an amazing lover. You want your partner to be passionate and engaged when you make love. You want to feel comfortable and confident during sex. That’s an admirable goal. But sometimes trying to be a “good lover” actually makes things worse.

People often focus on their “performance” or on things like sexual positions or specific techniques. They worry about erections for themselves or for a partner. They wonder about their own or a partner’s orgasmic responsiveness. They are uncomfortable being naked together. Sex has potential to be a wonderful experience for you and your wife. But, when you focus on performance or specific skills, by definition, you’re focusing on doing instead of being.

It’s not bad to learn about different sexual things to do, but in my view, there are three “being” things that matter more than any specific sexual skill.

“Sex has potential to be a wonderful experience for you and your wife. But, when you focus on performance or specific skills, by definition, you’re focusing on doing instead of being.”

1. Slow down

Studies indicate that the average heterosexual couple in America spends five to seven minutes having sex. Unfortunately, when sex is brief like this, the she/her partner doesn’t have time to fully open up. Some experts say that women need 20 minutes of what is called “foreplay” to be fully aroused; others say it’s 45 minutes. Talk with her about slowing down. What would make the experience more satisfying for her? Listen closely to what she says. Watch her body language as she talks. She may be speeding things up because she’s not really enjoying the sex you’ve been having. See if you can create something that’s worth her time.

To have in-person sex, of course you need to be in the room. Unfortunately, many people are physically present, but mentally, emotionally and energetically very far away. Being fully present is a gift you can offer to your partner. It’s also a gift that you can give to yourself. If sexual trauma is keeping either of you from enjoying intimacy, get support from a skilled sex-positive professional. When you’re truly present, sex can be something magical.

3. Let go

It’s great to feel relaxed and uninhibited during sex, but letting go isn’t just about getting rid of stress or nervousness. It’s also about releasing unhelpful expectations. You probably hold onto many known and unknown rules about sex. These rules might be about what’s OK to do or say when you’re making love. These unspoken rules impact you every time you connect. Have a conversation about your expectations.

When you talk about these three things: slowing down, showing up and letting go, you’ll have the potential to change your relationship. Take it one step at a time. You got this.

Sheridan explores motherhood through her art

Redux Contemporary Art Center this month presents Interwoven, a solo exhibition from Columbia-based artist Jordan Sheridan, who works in textile installation and oil painting. This exhibit will transform the Redux galleries with a new series of paintings along with a large, crocheted and light-based installation titled, “The Mother.”

Interwoven is the result of Sheridan imagining the maternal experience as an enveloping, polymorphous mass that is everstretching, fracturing and shifting. The work documents and aestheticizes her personal experience as a mother.

Through painting and installation, she communicates the paradox of feeling both overwhelmed and spellbound as a mother — reconnecting the fragmented pieces of her identity while the boundaries between herself and her children are often blurred.

In addition to the exhibition running March 31-May 20, Sheridan will host a free community workshop from 1-4 p.m. April 1 at Redux, teaching participants how to cut and crochet a single chain with donated fabric. Everyone will then create chains of material to hang on a wooden frame suspended from the gallery’s ceiling. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring old materials like T-shirts, towels and sheets to use.

This latest exhibit demonstrates a shift in Sheridan’s artistic practice, which happened in 2017 when she gave birth to her son, Samuel. Sheridan, who was born in northeastern Arkansas, was pursuing a master’s degree in fine art at the University of South Carolina when Sam was very young.

This profound experience caused her work to organically shift to include her understanding of her new role as a mother. This pushed her from working primarily in painting into 3D artmaking via large-scale textile installations.

“When I was working on what I was going to do for my thesis, I remember my committee saying I had too many ideas going on. So they just said point blank, ‘What’s the most important thing in the world to you?’ And I said, ‘My son.’ It was an easy question. And so that’s kind of when it started to shift into thinking about how I can make work about my experience as a mother.

“I made probably 30 paintings in a couple of months trying to express motherhood, and I just didn’t feel like it was really capturing it. It just wasn’t enough. I felt like I needed to wrap the viewer inside of my painting somehow. And that’s when I started to look into installation and 3D work.”

Sheridan’s studio practice unites painting, sculpture and installation. She said each installation evolves, as does her experience of motherhood.

“Every time I hang the work, it looks different than the time before. I really like that part of it, how it shifts, because motherhood is constantly shifting and evolving.”

The upcoming show at Redux especially exemplifies the idea of

Celebrate the Divine Feminine

change as the only constant. The show was intended to revolve around light and the “ephemeral quality of motherhood” but has shifted into a darker tone since Sheridan experienced a death in her family.

“This show was kind of intended to be a certain way, and then something shifted in my life, and now it’s gone in a different direction. A few weeks ago, my 20-year-old nephew, who I’m really close to, passed away. So the paintings have started to shift from these soft, light-filled paintings into kind of dark, violent ones. My relationship with him also informs the idea of motherhood for me. He was my nephew — it’s still this role of caretaking. But it also still relates to motherhood because it’s not all light.

“There are instances where it’s incredibly hard, and especially moments like losing someone that you’re kind of a caretaker of.”

Sheridan is currently a full-time instructor at the University of South Carolina, where she has taught painting courses since 2021. She said the way she approaches creating and installing her textile work is similar to painting.

“It reminds me a lot of painting because it’s really intuitive — you’re kind of laying a brushstroke, moving colors. And I think the closer you get to the installation, the more you get to see how much material has been crocheted together. It took me a full year of maybe six to eight hours every night crocheting. And that’s something also that kind of helped me to make artwork as a mother, because you can crochet with your child right next to you.”

Both the fabrication and installation of the textile work is very labor-intensive, Sheridan said.

“I think it connects to motherhood in that it’s this sort of invisible and never-ending labor.”

Redux will host an opening reception for Interwoven from 5-8 p.m. March 31.

Kate Ritchie presents a solo exhibition at the Public Works Art Center in Summerville now through May 16. The exhibition is called Divine Feminine and features mixed media works depicting yonis, uteruses and largerthan-life goddess figures. Ritchie said her exhibition “celebrates the divine feminine energy within all of us. My hope is that, through this body of work, you will see the goddess within yourself and everyone around you.”

Emeline Hotel expands artist residency program

The Emeline Hotel on Church Street is expanding its new artist residency program with quarterly artists and special events. After launching the residency in July 2022, the hotel has opted to make the program quarterly rather than annually, largely due to positive feedback from hotel guests and the surrounding artistic community.

“One of our goals is to embrace the community, so that the experience staying at Emeline really speaks to Charleston and what it has to offer,” said Shannon Hartman, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “I think art and culture is so much of what makes Charleston so unique, so us being able to celebrate that at Emeline is really exciting.”

The next artist-in-residence is Jenan McClain, a local painter, who will host an intuitive painting workshop during her residency weekend, May 19-21.

The residency’s second installment in January offered a weekend of special events with poet Marcus Amaker. The events hosted by Amaker, including

a poetry reading and book signing at Clerk’s Coffee and a self-portrait writing workshop, were well-attended and wellreceived, Hartman said.

In between artist residencies, the Emeline’s coffee shop, Clerks’ Coffee, will stage monthly open mic nights.

“We want to give artists an opportunity to share their craft with the community, and also get in front of different people to showcase their art or books or whatever they are trying to promote,” Hartman said. “It’s a partnership with artists to give them a unique platform to share their talents.”

Right now, residency artists are mostly chosen by word-of-mouth, Hartman said. Though there is not yet an official application, interested artists may reach out to emeline@louhammond.com for more information.

“We hope as it continues to gain traction, more people might reach out to us and we can continue to grow this program,” Hartman said. “It’s developing in real time. We just love the concept of embracing artists. So we will continue to grow with this concept and see how the community embraces it.”

Jewish Film Fest takes over the Terrace Theatre

The Charleston Jewish Film Fest returns to the Terrace Theatre March 30-April 2 with four acclaimed films offering a rich sampling of international content. The lineup includes two comedies, a drama and a documentary, with discussions touching on subjects that range from lighthearted — explorations of Jewish humor and generational differences using smartphones — to heavier topics like the Holocaust.

Festival Director Sandra Brett said a unifying theme between the four films is generational relationships and divides.

“These films really deal with themes that are of universal interest. I think that’s something the Jewish community wants to do — to embrace these themes and show the larger community our similarities rather than our differences. I think coming to the festival is a way to get a side of the Jewish experience.”

The two films on Sunday, Farewell, Mr. Haffmann and Who’s Afraid of Jewish Humor?, offer post-screening Q&As with College of Charleston (CofC) professors, which Brett said allows for interesting discussions between audience members and experts on the subject matter.

“Two professors will speak on Who’s Afraid of Jewish Humor? One who deals with Holocaust literature and movies. The other is from the German department, because the film is in German with subtitles,” she said. “I felt I just learned so much from it about the roots of Jewish humor, going back to the Bible, but I think the discussion with them will really give us some insight into what they think the film got wrong and what it did right.”

D’Allesandro’s owners open new bar, Sugey’s

The D’Allesandro brothers are doing it again. Ben and Nick D’Allesandro opened their popular St. Philip Street pizza joint D’Allesandro’s Pizza 16 years ago, followed by the dive bar Cutty’s across the street just five years later. Now the brothers have opened another bar, Sugey’s, on King Street just a few blocks from their St. Philip Street establishments.

At Line and King streets is Barsa Tapas Lounge & Bar. Walk a bit further up King Street toward the overpass, and you’ll spot a little building tucked in the back of a small parking lot. You’ve found Sugey’s.

“I just really loved that space,” said Ben D’Allesandro. “If it wasn’t for that particular spot, I don’t know that I really would have had much of a desire to open a bar, but I just thought that spot had a great curb appeal to it.”

As for the name, it comes from a cute nickname between him and his wife, who’s name in his phone is “Sugey.”

When figuring out a name for the bar, someone from D’Allesandro’s Pizza recommended that name: “Sugey’s.”

“I was like, ‘Man, that is the perfect name,’” he added. The bar will be run by longtime Cutty’s bar manager Sarah Griffith, who returned in January from a short stint in Philadelphia.

“I’m very fortunate to have the bosses that I have,” Griffith said. “I’ve worked for them for almost a decade. They know the work that I do and what it’s like, and they’ve put an awful lot of trust in me, which is really flat-

tering and really cool.”

Because of her experience working alongside the D’Allesandro brothers, she was given full creative control over designing the new bar.

“They’re like, ‘We don’t know what you’re gonna do

with this space, but like, do what thou wilt. And it will probably do pretty well,’” she said. “At its essence, it’s a metal bar. There’s a lot of different elements in this space and in the culture of this space that are more than just metal music. When you look around, in a way, it’s kind of autobiographical.”

When you walk inside, it’s like looking into the mind of Griffith, a fan of metal music, pulp fantasy and ’80s slasher films. The walls are lined with poster art of bands ranging from punk rock icon Black Flag to flagship metal bands of Kiss and Metallica, science fiction pulp fantasy posters and neon Frank Frazetta art straight from the Frank Frazetta museum near Philadelphia. A projector plays classic ’80s VHS films on the left wall and a Godzilla pinball machine is tucked in the corner near the entrance.

“Sarah has done an amazing job with the place,” Ben D’Allesandro said. “It’s oozing with flavors.”

The cocktail menu offered at Sugey’s is handcrafted by Griffith, featuring a twisted take on a painkiller made with Pusser’s gunpowder proof rum, Cruzan blackstrap, coconut cream, pineapple, Thai iced tea, Demerara simple syrup and lime.

The space has a kitchen that can be used to make small plates, Griffith said, but like its sister location Cutty’s, Sugey’s plans to introduce weekly food residencies for snacking options.

Urban Alchemy launches two cold brews

Andrew Miller and Rachael James had a dream at the end of October to launch a brand new coffee brand in time for Charleston Wine + Food (W+F). That dream came from their shared love of cold brew and a desire to fill a hole in the small market of canned cold brews that had more body and flavor than mass-market brands.

On the last day to apply as a vendor at W+F’s Culinary Village at Riverfront Park, the pair was given an opportunity that would set them on a nonstop 100-day race to the finish line. Urban Alchemy was born, with two products to line shelves: the OG Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew.

“We didn’t have a name. We didn’t have a product. We had nothing,” James said. “So I pitched them a concept. And they said, ‘Yeah, let’s get on a Zoom call.’”

Miller and James had a clear vision for the coffee they wanted — a smooth cold brew highlighting the natural flavors of the coffee bean.

“We wanted a coffee that you could just open from the can, and it’s beautiful and smooth,” James said. “The notes in the beans — what exists in nature — is leveraged in the cold brew process because that’s what cold brewing does, whereas heating a coffee kind of masks imperfections. It dulls things, but a cold brew opens it all up.”

After the success and go-ahead from the Zoom meeting with W+F — along with the decision to name the company “Urban Alchemy” during that meeting — it was full steam ahead. The next step was to find a roaster. She pitched that coffee concept from the Zoom meeting to a family friend who is a local roaster and they were on board.

Once James and Miller partnered with a small local roaster, it was time to fine tune the flavor profile envisioned in the pitch.

“We went through four or five test batches of different cuppings and different single origin beans and multiple flavor profiles,” Miller said. “We took our first test batches home right at Christmas to taste with our friends and then came back and sort of refined what would be our flavor profile.”

Urban Alchemy uses an organic single origin coffee bean from Guatemala, so when it’s brewed in a 34-degree cold steep with triple-filtered water, the flavors of the single bean are highlighted in each batch. The batch provides flavor notes of chocolate, vanilla and berry for a dynamic taste for the OG Cold Brew. The Nitro is the same

brew, but fully integrated with nitrogen for a silky smooth finish.

“We actually bumped up the Nitro psi [pounds-per-square-inch] a little bit just to give it that extra little creamy kick,” Miller said. “We kind of wanted it to cascade out like a Guinness and give that nice, creamy mouthfeel.”

But the flavor of the coffee wasn’t the only thing considered for the product; the design of the can was just as important.

“When you look at the cold case for beers, especially our local breweries, it’s a wall of insane-looking cans,” Miller said. “The artwork is incredible. The beers are incredible. And then when we looked at the cold brew space, we thought it was a little bit boring. So we wanted to come in with something that popped off the shelf.”

The cans of Urban Alchemy might remind you of a psychedelic rock poster with abstract shapes and vibrant colors. It’s definitely an eye-catcher, and that’s what Miller and James wanted.

The OG Cold Brew comes in a blue can covered in a hexagonal pattern with a weathered look to integrate the silver of the can. The Nitro Cold Brew fuses the natural silver of the can with orange and yellow for a swirly, psychedelic sunset.

The duo wanted to brew and can everything in Charleston, but because of the time crunch and self-imposed goal to launch by the first weekend of March, it didn’t work

out. The coffee is currently canned and brewed in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“There’s a specific chemistry between us and the roasters and the brewers,” Miller said. “It’s sort of a multi-faceted formula that gets tested three times just to make sure that it’s exactly what it should be.”

Each batch is cupped, or tasted, three separate times before being canned and put out into the market for a precise and consistent product.

“It was like a beautiful marriage of our roasters and our brewers working together to say this is what we’re going for,” James said.

Urban Alchemy cold brew is available online at urbanalchemycoffee.com or at select locations throughout the Charleston area including Cold Shoulder Gourmet, goat. sheep.cow., Brewlab Charleston and more.

Free Will Astrology By

ARIES (March 21-April 19): If we were to choose one person to illustrate the symbolic power of astrology, it might be Aries financier and investment banker J. P. Morgan (1837–1913). His astrological chart strongly suggested he would be one of the richest people of his era. The sun, Mercury, Pluto and Venus were in Aries in his astrological house of finances. Those four heavenly bodies were trine to Jupiter and Mars in Leo in the house of work. Further, sun, Mercury, Pluto and Venus formed a virtuoso “Finger of God” aspect with Saturn in Scorpio and the moon in Virgo. Anyway, Aries, the financial omens for you right now aren’t as favorable as they always were for J. P. Morgan — but they are pretty auspicious. Venus, Uranus and the north node of the moon are in your house of finances, to be joined for a bit by the moon itself in the coming days. My advice: Trust your intuition about money. Seek inspiration about your finances.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The only thing new in the world,” said former U.S. President Harry Truman, “is the history you don’t know.” Luckily for all of us, researchers have been growing increasingly skilled in unearthing buried stories. Three examples: 1. Before the U.S. Civil War, six Black Americans escaped slavery and became millionaires. (Check out the book Black Fortunes by Shomari Wills.) 2. Over 10,000 women secretly worked as code-breakers in World War II, shortening the war and saving many lives. 3. Four Black women mathematicians played a major role in NASA’s early efforts to launch people into space. Dear Taurus, I invite you to enjoy this kind of work in the coming weeks. It’s an excellent time to dig up the history you don’t know — about yourself, your family, and the important figures in your life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Since you’re at the height of the Party Hearty Season, I’ll offer two bits of advice about how to collect the greatest benefits. First, ex-basketball star Dennis Rodman says that mental preparation is the key to effective partying. He suggests we visualize the pleasurable events we want to experience. We should meditate on how much alcohol and drugs we will imbibe, how uninhibited we’ll allow ourselves to be, and how close we can get to vomiting from intoxication without actually vomiting. But wait! Here’s an alternative approach to partying, adapted from Sufi poet Rumi: “The golden hour has secrets to reveal. Be alert for merriment. Be greedy for glee. With your antic companions, explore the frontiers of conviviality. Go in quest of jubilation’s mysterious blessings. Be bold. Revere revelry.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22): If you have been holding yourself back or keeping your expectations low, please STOP! According to my analysis, you have a mandate to unleash your full glory and your highest competence. I invite you to choose as your motto whichever of the following inspires you most: raise the bar, up your game, boost your standards, pump up the volume, vault to a higher octave, climb to the next rung on the ladder, make the quantum leap, and put your ass and assets on the line.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): According to an ad I saw for a luxury automobile, you should enjoy the following adventures in the course of your lifetime: Ride the rapids on the Snake River in Idaho, stand on the Great Wall of China, see an opera at La Scala in Milan, watch the sun rise over the ruins of Machu Picchu, go paragliding over Japan’s Asagiri highland plateau with Mount Fuji in view, and visit the pink flamingos, black bulls, and white horses in France’s Camargue Nature Reserve. The coming weeks would be a favorable time for you to seek experiences like those, Leo. If that’s not possible, do the next best things. Like what? Get your mind blown and your heart thrilled closer to home by a holy sanctuary, natural wonder, marvelous work of art — or all the above.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s an excellent time to shed the dull, draining parts of your life story. I urge you to bid a crisp goodbye to your burdensome memories. If there are pesky ghosts hanging around from the ancient past, buy them a one-way ticket to a place far away from you. It’s OK

to feel poignant. OK to entertain any sadness and regret that well up within you. Allowing yourself to fully experience these feelings will help you be as bold and decisive as you need to be to graduate from the old days and old ways.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your higher self has authorized you to become impatient with the evolution of togetherness. You have God’s permission to feel a modicum of dissatisfaction with your collaborative ventures — and wish they might be richer and more captivating than they are now. Here’s the cosmic plan: This creative irritation will motivate you to implement enhancements. You will take imaginative action to boost the energy and synergy of your alliances. Hungry for more engaging intimacy, you will do what’s required to foster greater closeness and mutual empathy.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio poet Richard Jackson writes, “The world is a nest of absences. Every once in a while, someone comes along to fill the gaps.” I will add a crucial caveat to his statement: No one person can fill all the gaps. At best, a beloved ally may fill one or two. It’s just not possible for anyone to be a shining savior who fixes every single absence. If we delusionally believe there is such a hero, we will distort or miss the partial grace they can actually provide. So here’s my advice, Scorpio: Celebrate and reward a redeemer who has the power to fill one or two of your gaps.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Poet E. E. Cummings wrote, “May my mind stroll about hungry and fearless and thirsty and supple.” That’s what I hope and predict for you during the next three weeks. The astrological omens suggest you will be at the height of your powers of playful exploration. Several long-term rhythms are converging to make you extra flexible and resilient and creative as you seek the resources and influences that your soul delights in. Here’s your secret code phrase: higher love.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Let’s hypothesize that there are two ways to further your relaxation: either in healthy or not-so-healthy ways — by seeking experiences that promote your long-term well-being or by indulging in temporary fixes that sap your vitality. I will ask you to meditate on this question. Then I will encourage you to spend the next three weeks avoiding and shedding any relaxation strategies that diminish you as you focus on and celebrate the relaxation methods that uplift, inspire and motivate you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Please don’t expect people to guess what you need. Don’t assume they have telepathic powers that enable them to tune in to your thoughts and feelings. Instead, be specific and straightforward as you precisely name your desires. For example, say or write to an intense ally, “I want to explore ticklish areas with you between 7 and 9 on Friday night.” Or approach a person with whom you need to forge a compromise and spell out the circumstances under which you will feel most open-minded and open-hearted. PS: Don’t you dare hide your truth or lie about what you consider meaningful.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean writer Jack Kerouac feared he had meager power to capture the wonderful things that came his way. He compared his frustration with “finding a river of gold when I haven’t even got a cup to save a cupful. All I’ve got is a thimble.” Most of us have felt that way. That’s the bad news. The good news, Pisces, is that in the coming weeks, you will have extra skill at gathering in the goodness and blessings flowing in your vicinity. I suspect you will have the equivalent of three buckets to collect the liquid gold.

Homework: Name one thing about your life you can’t change and one thing you can change. Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology.com

Flutist Zhu lands at Forte Jazz Lounge

Playing the flute came naturally to Washington D.C.-based musician Sara Zhu. She’s spent time in Charleston regularly for the last two decades, and on March 29-30, Zhu performs back-to-back concerts at Forte Jazz Lounge. The first show features instrumental jazz standards, and the second features Zhu singing Great American Songbook classics.

“I’m looking to play an expansive palette,” she said. “Jazz has come a long way over the last 100-plus years — so I think a little bit of everything.”

Her piano-playing mom and music-loving dad made sure she had various instruments to try out as a kid before she landed on the flute at 10 years old. She went on to receive classical training, although her listening tendencies were eclectic, and she really leaned into jazz in her early high school years. She found her dad’s old collection of records and taught herself to sing. The first recording she fell in love with was the classic 1956 Ella and Louis album and then, the 1994 Pure Ella compilation and the music of jazz pianist Bill Evans.

“And it really just spiraled from that,” she said. She tried violin, cello and piano, but they didn’t stick. She was drawn to the flute because it was stringless, which meant no blisters, and more compact so it was easier to handle.

By the time she attended college, she settled on classical flute performance — but midway through her studies, she realized she was much happier playing jazz, and embraced the art of improvisation and honed her singing skills.

“I thought [the flute] was so beautiful,” she said. “I listened to operas and ballets with my parents as a kid, and the flute was always featured in Tchaikovsky ballets and Mozart symphonies.”

She earned her bachelor’s degree in jazz studies in 2020 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. For someone who has a lot of energy, Zhu said jazz was something unpredictable she could channel without

parameters — whereas classical music felt as if the performance had to be pristine each time.

“You listen to classic recordings of Miles Davis — he’s splitting notes, but he’s making so many cool things right on the spot,” she said. “And the band has such a great ear, they catch him. Maybe he plays the wrong note, but then the chord changes behind him to fit it. It just felt much more artistic and much more freeing to be able to do what you are feeling in the moment.”

Zhu has made a seasonal home of Charleston for the past 20 years, regularly visiting her aunt and uncle, Tony and Kelly Chu, who own and operate Red Orchids China Bistro in West Ashley.

She met Forte Jazz Lounge owner Joe Clarke through her aunt, and played her first show there last November.

As a freelance musician, Zhu has played over the years in rock bands, R&B acts and even a gogo band in D.C. In addition to playing in jazz combos, she and her boyfriend perform as duo Sara & Austin, tying in other genres when the mood strikes. She also teaches private flute lessons to students ranging from age 7 to 79, and it keeps her on her toes creatively.

“Right now I’m trying to take guitar lessons from my boyfriend and it’s definitely not as second nature,” she said. “The older you get, when your brain gets more informed, I

think we become too aware, like, ‘Oh, maybe I should be doing this.’ And ‘I should sound like this, right?’ Whereas kids, they just do whatever because it’s kind of fun.”

To Zhu, Charleston musicians have been particularly inviting and accepting.

“We have this word in jazz called being ‘vibed’ — when people in the band try to put you down or test your knowledge — and unfortunately, it happens a lot, especially as a woman and especially as a singer in jazz. But when I came to play in Charleston, I got none of that at all.”

As a freelance musician and a songwriter, Zhu said there are lots of highs and lows.

“It can be hard when suddenly you’re feeling like I have all these gigs — I’m on the top of the world — then suddenly I have to consider maybe a day job to get by until maybe the wedding season. Creatively, it can be exhausting trying to write songs.”

Zhu said she enjoys writing acoustic indie folk music, whether it’s writing stories or writing music to poetry. She hopes to release original music later this year.

“I think it sometimes can be very hard to write something that’s honest while you’re just trying to create something that’s good. Like, ‘What if it doesn’t sell?’ ‘What if it’s not what I should do?’ It’s hard to kind of separate yourself from it. It has to come from a personal place.”

Dynamic vocalist Tonya Nicole , known locally for her captivating Sade tribute, takes over the Forte Jazz Lounge stage at 7 p.m. March 31 to perform music from her favorite female jazz legends such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Esperanza Spalding, Norah Jones and Erykah Badu. The music on Evergreen Motel, the new album by Elohyek, is fascinating. It blends industrial percussion, indie-rock guitars and goth atmosphere, and each of the 13 tracks sounds different than the one before it.

The group (pronounced el-low-yek) is more of a loose collective than a fullfledged band, blending in members from around the U.S. and Britain. At the center of Elohyek’s sound is Charleston musician Matthew “Maku” Hancock, a drummer, guitarist and synth player.

“It really started as a side project,” Hancock said. “I play in another band, and we all do writing for that, but a lot of the stuff that I was writing just didn’t really fit with that group. So I had a bunch of stuff saved up over the years, and I just had this desire to record it.”

Evergreen Motel is surprisingly unified in its dark atmospheric, rhythmic complexity weaved with yearning vocal melodies — think Tool or A Perfect Circle meets Nine Inch Nails with a dash of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

The first Elohyek album came out last year, a collection of haunting instrumentals called Phantom Limbs. The new album is the work of a group of musicians as opposed to a solo project.

“After I did [Phantom Limbs], I had all these other songs that had lyrics,” Hancock said. “I had some other people who were interested in doing some col-

laborations. I had a couple of the guys who I play in another band with and a couple of people I met online [who] all wanted to collab on some stuff. So it kind of morphed into a bit of a collective.”

Ultimately, seven people played or sang on Evergreen Motel, with Hancock acting as a sort of musical director.

“I would set the guidelines for the soundscape,” he said, “and then we would just explore the content musically.”

He credits divergent musical influences for helping shape Evergreen Motel.

“So on this album in particular, I was really getting into Portishead a lot. And I’m a huge Nine Inch Nails fan. Trent Reznor is probably my biggest musical inspiration. So I see this as my Nine Inch Nails where Trent writes most of the music, and then when they play live, they have the live band.”

Hancock is hopeful that some live performances are on the horizon for Elohyek as well.

“I think the main thing is just going out there and having fun,” he said. “We don’t absolutely have to play live because we have fun writing the music, and we have fun doing the recording and everybody’s got their day jobs as well. But obviously, I would say a good portion of making music is performing the music. So that’s definitely in the cards.”
