Boating industry has big economic impact in S.C.

The recreational boating industry is currently thriving, according to the South Carolina Boating & Fishing Alliance despite uncertain economic conditions and a recent pandemic.

According to the nonprofit, which represents the state’s boat and fishing tackle manufacturers, a study from the National Marine Manufacturers Association found that South Carolina’s recreational boating industry had a $6.5 billion economic impact this year.

This figure is a record-high and represents a 67% increase over the industry’s $3.9 billion impact in 2018.

Where technology meets shrimp, grits, the beach

Charleston’s technology future is extremely bright, but local tech gurus say the region must continue to invest in people and infrastructure to secure the future it has been building toward.

“Charleston’s tech ecosystem is likely to continue its growth, attracting more startups and established tech companies,” said Ted Tanner Jr., a longtime Holy City tech proponent who currently is chief technology officer for BigBear.ai.

Charleston entrepreneur Trey Rust, who soon is expected to launch an app for social media integration, said tech is hot now in Charleston thanks to 20 years of diverse companies planting seeds for the future.

“There are so many talented people in town right now in the right places in

their careers, and companies that brought Charleston to the world-class level that so many people here have been working to achieve in tech since the late 1990s,” he said.

Look from Blackbaud and Boeing to Automated Trading Desk (ATD) and Boomtown. There are technology niches in which the Lowcountry excels — from aviation, financial services and logistics to the development of technologies that benefit the military and defense sectors, such as cybersecurity, communications and advanced electronics.

“The city’s appeal, lifestyle and potential for collaboration could draw in more talent and investments,” Tanner said.

And when local companies make good, the Lowcountry benefits economically, noted long-time Charleston Digital Corridor Executive Director Ernest Andrade.

“When ATD, Blue Acorn, BoomTown, SPARC were sold, and Blackbaud and Benefitfocus went public, there was a good portion of the proceeds that were realized locally as opposed to that money leaving the community,” he said. “This enables founding entrepreneurs to invest in other ventures in the community.”

Local tech companies, he said, have created more than $2.5 billion in value to the community since the CDC started gathering data in 2004. “This wealth has been

generated locally and, for the most part, stays in the community.”

6 takeaways on the future of local tech

Here are several takeaways based on interviews about the future of technology in the Charleston marketplace:

Hubs. Rust says the Harbor Entrepreneur Center in Mount Pleasant is really establishing itself as a hive of activity. “In five years, there must be multiple locations of the Entrepreneur Center in each of our three metro counties supporting the potential of our community and providing the resources that the talent here needs.”

That, in fact, is what the Charleston

The study also discovered that yearly sales of new boats and accessories jumped from $661 million in 2018 to $895 million this year. —Staff reports

Local races for mayor, council packed with candidates

The filing period for the Nov. 7 municipal elections in Charleston County closed at noon Aug. 21, and as predicted, races in Charleston and North Charleston are packed and competitive.

In North Charleston, 10 candidates are running for mayor to fill the seat of incumbent Mayor Keith Summey, who announced March 10 he would not seek reelection. In Charleston, five challengers filed against incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg as campaigns are raising millions of dollars of campaign funds.

City council races are crowded too. Thirteen people filed to run for six Charleston City Council seats, with oddnumbered seats up for grabs this year. In North Charleston, 35 candidates filed for 10 seats for city council. All of its seats are up for grabs this year.

Keep following the Charleston City Paper for continued election coverage as Nov. 7 nears.

Mayor of Charleston

Tecklenburg was the only candidate for mayor of Charleston to file on Aug. 7, the day filing first opened. As of Monday afternoon, several others had joined the list. In alphabetical order, they are:

William Cogswell. A former Republican member of the S.C. House of Representatives, Cogswell filed Aug. 15. Cogswell is a developer with a “reputation for structuring collaborative and innovative projects,” according to his bio.

Mika Gadsden, a local social media influencer, leads the Charleston Activist Network, filed Aug. 17.

Debra J. Gammons, a visiting professor and director of the office of Diversity Initiatives at the Charleston School of Law, filed Aug. 17.

Clay N. Middleton, a former senior staff member for U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., Middleton is a veteran and an experienced public affairs professional. He has long toyed with the idea of running for mayor and filed officially Aug. 14.

Peter Shahid, a city council member representing part of West Ashley, ran for council on a campaign to redevelop the former home of a Piggly Wiggly at the corner of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Old Towne Road. He’s now running for mayor on the same platform. He filed Aug. 21.

John Tecklenburg, incumbent mayor of Charleston, filed Aug. 7. He has led the city through a period of massive growth and

infrastructure projects, including drainage, transportation and other improvements.

North Charleston Mayor

Many correctly predicted North Charleston’s mayoral election to be crowded this year as 10 candidates filed for election as of Monday afternoon. In alphabetical order, they are:

Reggie Burgess. The former chief of police of North Charleston, Burgess hinted at his bid for mayor before Summey announced he would not seek reelection. He filed Aug. 7.

Russ Coletti. A veteran who recently retired after working 30 years for FedEx Express, Coletti filed Aug. 7.

Stephanie Ganaway-Pasley, who ran unsuccessfully for Charleston County Probate Judge in 2018 and again in 2022, filed for mayor Aug. 11.

Rhonda Jameson Jerome, first elected to North Charleston City Council in 2003, filed Aug. 7.

Curtis A. Merriweather Jr. His bio describes him as an accomplished advisor, management scholar, senior executive and thought leader, filed Aug. 9.

Todd Olds. A former city councilman and real estate investor, Olds filed Aug. 7.

Teddie E. Pryor Sr. A project manager with the city of North Charleston, Pryor is a current member of Charleston County Council and its former chairman. He filed Aug. 7.

John Singletary. A North Charleston native and businessman and Citadel graduate who ran for the mayor’s seat in 2019, Singletary filed again Aug. 7.

Samuel Whatley Sr., a local pastor, filed Aug. 7.

Jesse Williams, a community advocate, filed Aug. 7.

Charleston City Council

All but two of the seats up for grabs on Charleston City Council are competitive so far, with Districts 1 and 11 having only one candidate filed.

• District 1: Boyd Gregg (incumbent).

• District 3: Bill Antonucci; Stephanie Hodges; Jim McBride.

• District 5: Karl Brady (incumbent); Ron Call; Tarah Swetnam

• District 7: Owen Vogel; Keith Waring (incumbent).

Ugly Toilet Roll Pole graces

Charleston’s skyline

From staff reports

Edisto Island bass player gets honor for music contributions

The intersection at S.C. Highway 174 and Steamboat Landing Road on Edisto Island has a new name, a tribute to James Jamerson whose one-finger style of playing the bass guitar powered the soulful low end for a string of Motown hits.

Jamerson, an Edisto native, played with the Funk Brothers, an ensemble of studio musicians whose uncredited rhythms made household names out of the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes and Smokey Robinson.

The S.C. General Assembly in May approved a resolution that authorized the intersection’s designation on Edisto, a sea island south of Charleston. The S.C. Department of Transportation installed a sign naming the crossroads the James Lee Jamerson Memorial Highway.

A long road to recognition

For decades, Jamerson’s first cousin, Anthony McKnight of Charleston, has pushed to bring attention to Jamerson’s contributions to music. McKnight unveiled the sign during a recent ceremony that included a sold-out musical tribute at the Edisto Island Civic Center.

For two decades, McKnight said, he has tried to get Jamerson inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame. He is frustrated that Jamerson has not received the recognition given in 2020 to Darius Rucker, he said.

“Jamerson was making music before Darius Rucker was born,” said McKnight, who stages the annual James Jamerson Bass Symposium in Charleston.

McKnight’s relentless efforts are appearing to pay off. In April, Jamerson will be inducted into the South Carolina Entertainers & Musicians Hall of Fame in Greenville, McKnight told the Charleston City Paper.

But McKnight’s work is not over. He’s now planning a historic marker along Morrison Drive near Huger Street by today’s Cooper River Courts. McKnight said Jamerson and his brother, Richard Brown, lived with his family in the projects before they moved to Detroit to live with their mother, Elizabeth Bacon.

Jamerson was a young talent

McKnight was an infant when a 16-year-old Jamerson moved to the Midwest. In high school, he excelled on the upright bass,

which led to work at recording studios. In 1959, Jamerson joined Berry Gordy’s Hitsville U.S.A. studio, headquarters for the Motown sound.

By the time McKnight was a 14-year-old student at Burke High School, he’d spend summers in Detroit following Jamerson into Motown studio sessions with the Supremes, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and others.

“When I was in the studio, they were making music, but I didn’t think anything of it,” he said. “It wasn’t until I came back home … and the winter months set in and then a song would come on the radio. I’d say, ‘Wait a minute I remember that song. That’s the song they were doing that day when I was in the studio.”

McKnight said he knew Jamerson had a special talent. “From the first time I heard him play [the Temptations’] ‘My Girl,’ I said, ‘Whoa!’ ” McKnight said. “That was the first time a song ever started with the bass,” said McKnight, former lead vocalist with the Black Velvets, a local soul and R&B group that performed from 1973 until 2005.

Edisto Island historian and author Greg Estevez said he first heard of Jamerson three years ago through McKnight’s efforts to promote his cousin. That news gave him a sense of pride, he said.

“He has been passionate about making sure that [Jamerson]

Charleston’s new eyesore — a 113-foot 5G wireless communications tower that looks like three rolls of toilet paper atop a pole — slithered into existence without anyone being able to do much about it, thanks to the Federal Communications Commission.

At the end of June, the agency received notice that an older tower — a tall, skinny, white monopole on Line Street that seemed innocuous next to a blaring billboard — was to be modified by a new Florida owner. A new brick wall went up around it and poof! The “Toilet Roll Pole” (TRP) came into existence.

“I think it’s really ugly,” said George Baerreis, who works at the Recovery Room on King Street. “I hate it every time that I drive in.”

The city of Charleston says it can’t do anything about the tower, which seems to smack motorists as they turn along Septima P. Clark Parkway toward Mount Pleasant.

“Under federal and state regulations, the city is strictly prohibited from imposing design standards on so-called ‘transmission towers’ such as this one,” said Charleston city spokesman Jack O’Toole. “Mayor [John] Tecklenburg is reaching out directly to our federal and state representatives to see what can be done to allow for more local and citizen input before these towers are built.”

According to section 1455 of Title 47 of U.S. Code, “a state or local government may not deny, and shall approve, any eligible facilities request for a modification of an existing wireless tower or base station that does not substantially change the physical dimensions of such tower or base station.”

Translated, the FCC regulation from 2016 makes it nearly impossible for a municipality to interfere with plans to modify an existing tower, even in a historic city like Charleston. Thanks to the regulation, modifications related to wireless communications services trump local or environmental concerns.

“It’s a way for the telecom companies to get around dealing with the cities,” said Angelina Panettieri, a legislative director with the National League of Cities. “The regulation has been rewritten by the FCC to allow a lot of changes and expansions under the guise of modifications and upgrades.”

She said there were good ways for companies to upgrade towers by engaging the community in the process.

“If they don’t engage with the community or camouflage the site, that’s when people in the community get upset.”

Some towers are cleverly camouflaged as trees or flagpoles. Others are masked by having them located in out-of-the-way places, such as the four-roll tower in Mount Pleasant along the marsh off Ben Sawyer Road.

“I don’t think any city is going to say ‘we don’t want better service,’ ” Panettieri said. “They just want the providers to work with them a little bit.”

It’s just plain ugly

Sarah Griffith, who manages heavy metal bar Sugey’s under the tower, said patrons have been asking about the TRP since it was first installed recently. But she never knows what to tell them.

“It looks like some sort of communications tower, but who it’s for, who it’s

Blotter of the Week

A Mount Pleasant man’s truck reportedly caught fire Aug. 8 at a U.S. Highway 17 gas station while he was filling gas tanks in the truck bed. The fire was put out without incident, but police informed the man that filling up tanks like that is “not a smart idea.” They then referred him to the multiple signs posted near the pump station which also said it was “not a smart idea.”

Seems like an overreaction

A North Charleston woman on Aug. 3 reportedly slammed several doors in a Northwoods Boulevard clothing store, prompting store managers to call police to have her cited for trespassing. By the time police arrived, the woman was gone. It’s a pretty good bet she slammed the door on her way out.

Proportionate response

Mount Pleasant police on Aug. 8 responded to a Johnnie Dodds Boulevard fast food restaurant after a person reportedly stood in front of a car, blocking the drive-through. Getting impatient, the driver reportedly rolled the vehicle into the person, who retaliated by punching the car’s side mirror. The stories were consistent from both parties, police reported, meaning each of these people thought they were totally in the right.

Digital Corridor has been doing for two decades. In that span, Andrade noted, it has grown from 18 private tech companies in 2001 to more than 700 now. “Thanks to the convergence of tech and manufacturing, there are many more advanced manufacturing facilities in the region, which could push this number higher.”

Infrastructure investments. A key to growth of the section is making the right infrastructure decisions, Andrade said. Examples: “Enhanced educational offerings, targeted business incentives, physical facilities with flexible terms and seed-state investments.”

Remote working. “Charleston is increasingly becoming a home for remote technology workers,” Rust said. “Charleston’s future is in the design, engineering, security and the development of the next generation of technology the world has been waiting for. … We need to recruit and market this region as a remote workers’ paradise that always provides the option to go back to an office if you decide to.”

Emerging technologies. Tanner said, and others agreed, short-term growth needed to embrace emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, distributed computing and working with the Department of Defense, which has a big presence in the Goose Creek area. Andrade added that software engineers that didn’t embrace AI/ChatGPT models of software risked getting left behind.

Startup network. The Lowcountry, sometimes called Silicon Harbor, has the benefit of having a mature start-up ecosystem, Tanner added. “Established companies might be more inclined to set up satellite offices or research centers” here because of that, he said. And that could lead to Charleston being considered a key national tech hub.

Micro-Hollywood. Social media entrepreneur John Edmonds Kozma says

Toilet

Charleston is perfectly placed to be a microHollywood for social media because of its lifestyle — and the fact that social media can be done anywhere.

communicating to…who knows?” she said, laughing softly. Griffith, like some of Sugey’s patrons, views TRP as an object of genuine curiosity. She says she’s “not bothered by it,” but “it’s definitely bizarre.”

Friday,

Baerreis said when he first saw TRP, he thought it was an unfinished billboard pending the attachment of an actual billboard.

“[A new billboard] would probably be worse, honestly,” he admitted. “I’ve lived here since 1991, so I remember Charleston before everything was a hotel — before you could build above the steeples,” he said.

Now for many, the Toilet Roll Pole is just another ugly thing crowding the Charleston horizon.

“When you think about technology and entertainment, social media is the future,” said Kozma, whose Bang Productions Studio uses Meta and TikTok platforms to promote entertainers and build compelling content that tells a story. His Mount Pleasant company’s numbers are off the charts. Through content developed for Meta and TikTok, he said Bang Productions reaches over 100 million monthly viewers and 1.2 billion annually on social media platforms.

Kozma

“That makes us one of the nation’s largest publishers on social media.” And more importantly, it shows that his company doesn’t have to be in the traditional entertainment hubs like Hollywood or New York to have a position of influence in entertainment. “So why not Charleston?” asks Kozma.

Area technology advantages

Tanner said Charleston has several advantages that can bolster its technology future, including a skilled workforce, research institutions and centers that can foster innovation and infrastructure advantages, including the Port of Charleston and transportation networks.

Also important are two other things — a spirit of collaboration that’s due to close proximity of existing industries that can fuel knowledge and development of new ideas as well as a quality of life that’s the envy of many areas.

“Where else are y’all going to code, go eat shrimp and grits, and hit the beach?” Tanner asked.

What to do

Contact your member of Congress and complain. Angelina Panettieri, a legislative director with the National League of Cities, said a bill under consideration, the American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023 (HR 3557) would turn the FCC regulation on tower modifications into law, which would make it harder to overturn. She said the National League of Cities and other organizations have been lobbying Congress to reject HR 3557.

“The skyline was something special, and it’s not anymore,” he said.

gets the credit he deserves. I am from Edisto so anything about Edisto we definitely want to celebrate,” said Estevez, who was a coordinator of the Jamerson tribute.

Estevez, a member of the Edisto Island Museum, said the museum earlier this year produced a brief video tribute to Jamerson that was posted on YouTube.

Marvin Gaye wanted Jamerson

James Island native Kevin Hamilton, the bass player for the two-time Grammy Award-winning Gullah ensemble Ranky Tanky, said Jamerson’s musical vernacular likely influenced him even before he knew it as he heard the recordings that his parents played during house parties.

Jamerson was a working studio musician who possessed a genius released “on the spot” as he laid down a classic bass line during latenight studio sessions, Hamilton said.

“So much of what I try to do is [play] a line that has character and stands alone,” Hamilton said. “Everything that Jamerson did stood alone. Jamerson had a beautiful way of marrying the harmony, melody and rhythm.”

Jamerson reluctantly switched to electronic bass in the early 1960s to play soul music because it helped to pay the bills. A decade later, Jamerson emerged as a highly sought-after bassist for Motown recordings.

“When Marvin Gaye was working on the What’s Going On album, Jamerson was out playing jazz … [but] Marvin said, ‘I need Jamerson to play this part. I gotta have Jamerson,’ ” McKnight said. Eventually, a search party found Jamerson that night playing at a Detroit jazz club. “He was drunk as heck,” McKnight said. “He was so drunk he couldn’t sit on a stool [in the Motown studio] so he laid on the floor and played What’s Going On.”

North Charleston City Council

In North Charleston, every city council seat is up for grabs during a general election. With the mayor’s race already packed, the council race was expected to be just as crowded. More than 30 candidates filed as of Monday afternoon. In alphabetical order, they are:

• District 1: Michael Brown (incumbent).

• District 2: Rhonda Jameson Jerome (incumbent); Kenneth Ray.

• District 3: Lou Baker; Curtis Clark; Reneah Jones; Sandino Moses; Monica

J. Mumme; Maurice Ray; Chuck Stall.

Jamerson hooked Motown with his bass

Jamerson had an unorthodox one-finger style of playing the bass, McKnight said. “He called that one finger the hook,” he added. Between 1962 and 1968, Jamerson is reported to have played on about 95% of the Motown recordings.

He died at the age of 47 in 1983. McKnight became frustrated that Jamerson had a simple marker in Detroit’s Woodland Cemetery, the resting place for cultural and music greats such as Rosa Parks, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations’ David Ruffin and the Four Tops’ Levi Stubbs.

In 2021, McKnight led an effort to place at Jamerson’s grave a polished black marble headstone with his photo and adorned with a bronze sculpture of Jamerson’s cherished Fender Precision bass.

“All I am trying to do is keep my cousin’s legacy alive,” he said.

• District 4: Samuel Bellamy Jr.; Joshua Gale; Richard Hayes; Brian Hill; Charmaine Palmer Roberts.

• District 5: Jerome Heyward (incumbent); Belinda Thomas Swindler; Brandon Trollinger; Samuel Whatley II

• District 8: Brandon Hudson; Kay Hyman; Andre Middleton; William Parker; Greg Perry.

• District 9: Kenny Skipper (incumbent).

• District 10: Michael A. Brown (incumbent); Aaron Hicks; Kevin D. Hollinshead Sr.; Rebecca Rushton

Three different people in North Charleston named Michael Brown filed for different seats on city council. They have different addresses and filed on separate dates.

CHECKLIST

Call your congressman about the hideous Toilet Roll Pole

In a city where it is almost impossible to demolish a rundown, dilapidated structure filled with rotting wood and broken glass, it’s pretty surprising there’s little that can be done about a new eyesore — an updated 5G communications tower that we call the Toilet Roll Pole.

The TRP went up in recent weeks, surprising many who live and work along Line Street and causing some head-shaking by city officials. The new tower modified an earlier monopole that seemed hidden in plain sight for years, jammed next to a billboard.

Modifying towers with grotesque tower tops, as in downtown Charleston along the Septima P. Clark Parkway, is allowed in a 2016 regulation by the Federal Communications Commission.

“Under federal and state regulations, the city is strictly prohibited from imposing design standards on so-called ‘transmission towers’ such as this one,” city spokesman Jack O’Toole said — a sentiment confirmed by Angelina Panettieri, a legislative director with the National League of Cities.

“It’s a way for the telecom companies to get around dealing with the cities,” she told the Charleston City Paper. “The regulation has been rewritten by the FCC to allow a lot of changes and expansions under the guise of modifications and upgrades.”

What’s ironic is that the Telecommunications Act of 1996, a whopping revision of communications law to bring it into modern times, was shepherded into existence by the late U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C. The Charleston native would be

rolling in his grave if he saw the TRP monstrosity just blocks from his grandparents’ home on Rutledge Avenue.

So what can you do about the new grossness on our skyline? Not much, other than complain to your member of Congress. Urge him or her to vote against the proposed American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023 (HR 3557), which seeks to turn the FCC’s current hideous regulation on tower modifications into law, which would make it harder to overturn.

of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:

Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation. Be smarter about education. new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.

Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Instant runoff voting could fix broken election system

We have all seen extreme partisanship in Washington, D.C. We’ve begun seeing it trickle down to the state and local levels.

I think most South Carolinians agree with me that the rhetoric is more harmful than helpful. Nothing is black and white. Shades of gray permeate every corner of our lives. Every day we are further divided by the echo chambers created by social media and biased news sources that make us more focused on national politics rather than what is happening in our own backyards.

Our political system pushes us to the extremes with campaign finance laws reminiscent of the Wild West, and a first-past-the-post voting system that incentivizes the poor behavior that perpetuates polarization. First-pastthe-post, or plurality voting, means that whoever gets the most votes wins. While that seems democratic on the surface, there are issues. For example, if there is a crowded field like North Charleston’s upcoming mayoral election, candidates can win with far less than 50% of the vote. That incentivizes candidates to tear down their opponents and radicalize their base.

Fixing the system

While many of these issues are difficult to tackle, there is already a bill in the Statehouse that could fix our broken first-past-the-post election system: H. 4022, which will allow municipalities to use instant runoff voting. Instant runoff voting (IRV, also known as ranked choice voting) allows voters to rank their choices. This simple change can save municipalities the cost of a traditional runoff while still ensuring majority support. Additionally, IRV provides another valuable benefit to our voting system — changing the way that candidates campaign. Obviously, a candidate wants to be a voter’s first choice, but IRV allows a voter to fully articulate how they feel about all their options by ranking them. With IRV, candidates will be incentivized to talk to voters who already support their opponents because the rankings are important in a crowded field and can lead to a win.

Advantages of instant runoffs

In the past, I’ve canvassed for candidates. If I saw someone else’s sign in the yard, I skipped them. They have clearly made their decision, and I am unlikely to sway them with a five-minute pitch. On the other hand if IRV were in place, I could knock on their door and tell them about how our two candidates have some stances in common and that we would appreciate their second place vote. IRV encourages real conversations and bridge building. It encourages candidates to reach beyond their base. Strong candidates win with IRV instead of letting weak candidates squeak by with a plurality or through a poorly attended runoff. IRV also discourages mudslinging. Since candidates want you to rank them, they need to appeal to their opponent’s voters as well. In races where IRV is already in use, we’ve seen candidates focus on their positive vision for their constituency rather than demeaning their opponents. Voters won’t rank a candidate who is attacking their top pick.

How it works

Also, IRV is simple to use. We’ve been ranking things for as long as we can remember and this is no different. Voters simply rank the candidates that they choose in the order that they prefer them. When votes are being counted, the candidate with the least amount of votes is eliminated and anyone who picked them first has their second choice activated. This process is repeated until a candidate achieves a majority of votes.

To try this out, readers can visit BetterBallotSC.org/polls. We have unscientific IRV Presidential Primary Polls to see how the system works firsthand with current candidates.

Charlestonians flock to these bagels shops as demand grows

ink your teeth into a soft, warm bagel with a perfectly crunchy outside and a layer of smooth, buttery cream cheese, and you’ll agree it’s a superior breakfast food. For many, it’s a nostalgic reminder of home.

On the surface, a bagel is a seemingly simple baked good made from flour, salt, sugar, yeast and warm water. But ask anyone about their go-to bagel, and you’re sure to get wildly different answers — from a plain bagel with cream cheese to a classic bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a cinnamon sugar bagel. The two most popular types of bagels are Montreal-style and New York-style. Though the baking process is similar, there are small but important differences between them. Montreal

bagels are typically smaller in size, boiled in water with honey and baked in a woodfired oven. New York bagels are larger, boiled in water with malt and baked in a traditional oven.

“We both grew up on bagels in New Jersey, right outside New York City,” said Greg Odachowski, who owns Holey City Bagels with his fiancé Bridget Byrne. “We wanted to bring New York-style bagels to Charleston.

… Nobody was really doing this downtown, especially the traditional way of hand rolling, boiling and baking them from scratch.”

Odachowski and Byrne opened their shop at 43 Cannon St. in June 2022, but Odachowski’s been refining his bagel-making skills since he taught himself by watching YouTube videos in 2016. He perfected his recipe and started serving his creations out of an Airstream motor home converted into a food truck in 2020.

Now, the shop pumps out hundreds of fresh-baked bagels every day with classic flavors such as sesame, salt and everything to more adventurous options like jalapeño cheddar, rosemary

salt and chocolate chip.

The bagel sandwiches at Holey City Bagels are stacked high with toppings. The bagels here have that signature New Yorkstyle crunch, and they’re large enough to keep you full for hours.

A classic bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel is by far the most popular choice, Byrne said. But a colossal sandwich called the Holey Moley is another standout, piled high with pork roll, sausage, bacon, four eggs and four slices of cheese.

“We have people who are [originally] from New York who drive a long way to come get our bagel,” Byrne said. “They grew up on bagels. It’s part of the culture.

“I think eating a bagel is just so comforting. People who grew up with great bagels, there is something nostalgic to it. … You just don’t get sick of it — the flavor of it, the texture.”

Cream cheese is also made in-house and the couple is constantly testing out new creations. They recently added a loaded lox cream cheese to the menu, which features capers, scallions and salmon lox, giving the spread a unique texture and classic flavor.

Bagel culture

Lox bagels are a meal that resonates across states and cultures. For Philip Lipton, owner of Moonrise Sourdough on James Island, it’s a part of his heritage.

“Bagels are part of my culture because I’m Jewish, so I’ve always grown up eating bagels at synagogue after service,” he said. “Bagel, lox and cream cheese is an officially Jewish food at every bar mitzvah. It’s definitely cultural for me.”

Lipton has been making his own bread for 12 years and learned to make bagels

from scratch about five years ago. He sells his specialty sourdough bagels, breads and cookies at various markets in the area including the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market at Pour House every Sunday yearround and North Charleston Farmers Market every Thursday through October.

“Sourdough is a lot healthier for you. I just know from experience that it feels good

in your body. It’s something sustainable,” Lipton said. “You can actually eat them throughout the week and not feel heavy. Also, they’re just so much more flavorful.”

Lipton offers traditional bagel flavors as well as rotating specials; some incorporate local ingredients like James Island blueber ries while others push creativity like a bagel with gochujang (red chili paste) and garlic from Spade and Clover farm.

Lipton follows a New York-style recipe and boils the bagels in Italian organic barley malt before a quick ice bath and bakes them on clay stones.

Though bagels are seemingly a universal comfort food, the growing popularity of New York-style bagels in Charleston may be a result of northerners moving to the area in recent years, Odachowski said.

The South is typically associated with breakfast items like grits and biscuits, but an increased demand for home-made bagels has been brewing.

Make it your own

Two couples from Connecticut, Kevin and Gail Roach and Joe and Denise Harvey, who now live in Mount Pleasant, noticed a need for more bagel shops.

They opened Ruby’s New York Style Bagels in October 2022, and quickly won the area over, even being named Best Bagel by Charleston City Paper voters in the 2023 Best of Charleston contest.

Ruby’s dough is made from scratch every day before it’s fermented in the fridge, then boiled in water with malt and

cheese. For something unique, try the pizza bagel or indulge in a sweet treat with Oreo cream cheese.

“I think bagels are comforting for people, [especially] people who have eaten bagels for most of their lives,” Harvey said. “It’s kind of routine … and there’s so much you can do with it.”

It’s true — the number of ways you can order a bagel is seemingly endless. Whether you’re craving a classic bacon, egg and cheese sandwich (also one of Ruby’s most popular items) or you want to make up your own combination, it’s possible to have a different sandwich every day of the week.

Bagel Nation on James Island takes its bagel sandwich selection seriously with a long list of options for breakfast and lunch.

Indulge in its “Southern Belle” with egg, Cajun spices, green peppers, tomatoes, sausage and cheese for breakfast, or if you’re looking for something really filling, opt for the “Manhattan” lunch sandwich with hot corned beef and pastrami, melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing or horseradish mustard sauce.

The bagels here are fluffy, flavorful, crunchy and most definitely filling. Of course, if you want to keep it simple, you can always select your favorite bagel flavor to pair with a cream cheese.

A different kind of oven

Most bagel shops in the area stick to the New York-style recipe, but a new shop, Spread Bagelry in Mount Pleasant, is doing things a bit differently with its Montrealstyle bagels.

Spread’s chief operating officer Brooks Tanner said this style of bagel is more rustic. The bagel dough is made by a bakery in Brooklyn using Spread’s recipe before being frozen and sent to its Mount Pleasant location.

Then, the bakers build a wood fire in the oven at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. The dough is boiled in water with honey before it’s baked in the wood-fired oven and served to the customer.

“What we’ve found is that the art itself really comes into the proofing process and the baking process. This wood-fired oven is something magical, and we’ve really trained [our bakers] on this archaic way of baking,” Tanner said.

Though Spread has 13 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and now Mount Pleasant, the shop has become involved in the local community, partnering with businesses like The Works yoga and spin studio, which has a garden veggie-style sandwich named after it on the menu.

“We’ve really been blessed with the community that has embraced us and the people who work for us.”

Exhibit opens at White Gallery in Mount Pleasant

Summerville-based husband-and-wife team Chuck and Karen Smith explore the biblical story of David and go “beyond the lion’s den” in their captivating new musical.

“We’re a couple of people with a vision, and we want to spread the word of Daniel,” Karen Smith said.

Directed by Brad Moranz, Daniel and the Kings plays at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center (PAC) Sept. 21 through Sept. 24 with awe-inspiring music and masterful performances.

Moranz is a Charleston-based performer, director and choreographer with more than 50 years of experience on and off Broadway. Abdiel Iriarte, a classically trained pianist and music director at South of Broadway Theatre Company in North Charleston, will orchestrate the musical, and Charleston native Matt Shingledecker will lead the cast as Daniel.

The musical opens with a young Daniel and his friends as they’re taken from home and put into bondage. Daniel leads his friends through hardship, never straying away from faith in God despite dire circumstances. Daniel rises through the ranks, changes the minds of kings and doesn’t allow those plotting against him to take over or shake his conviction. It’s a story about leadership and standing up for what you believe in.

“Daniel is not the action,” Chuck Smith said. “Everyone else who plots against him are the people in our story who are the action characters. The kings, the wizards and the queen are those who create the action, turmoil and activity, and Daniel’s response to it is always calm, with conviction, faith and strength.

“The takeaway here is that we’re going to face turmoil. We’re all going to be in the middle of a hurricane,” he added. “In order to persevere and survive, you have to maintain your conviction and faith.”

Developing the show

This production was a long time coming for the Smiths. Karen Smith dreamed up the idea for Daniel and the Kings in 2008. The first performance of the show, then known simply as Daniel was shown at Brunswick Church in New York in March 2010, receiving praise from audiences. The Smiths were encouraged to grow Daniel, and over time, the show kept getting bigger.

However, the final push to take it to the North Charleston PAC stage was ultimately an unexpected twist of fate. Karen Smith was involved in a car accident in October 2021 that nearly killed her and left her in the intensive care unit for three weeks.

“I’m half titanium, and by the grace of God, I survived,” she said. “We said, ‘You know what? You don’t have tomorrow, so we don’t have time to launch this as a little community thing.’”

The Smiths began discussion with the North Charleston PAC in February 2022, officially signing a contract for the perfor-

mance weeks later.

Rūta Smith

“Brad Moranz said yes to helping us direct,” Karen Smith said. “We have Abdiel Iriarte, who is a gift from God. He’s an incredible orchestrator/musician who took our music we’d written to this level that’s like Disney. Wait till you hear this stuff — you’re going to be blown away.”

Chuck Smith said with time and the help of Moranz, Moranz’s wife Jenny Moranz, and Iriarte, the script and music were rewritten significantly as Daniel became Daniel and the Kings Building an excellent cast was a priority for both the Smiths and Moranz to bring the story to life.

“In my opinion, casting a show is probably the most important thing you can do,” Brad Moranz said. “So when [the Smiths] asked me about directing it, I said, ‘Well, it’s going to be very important that we cast it really well, and by that I mean hire the best people that we can, wherever they come from.’”

With that in mind, they set out to assemble the most outstanding cast possible.

“I feel artistically fulfilled as a performer in this room because I’m surrounded by people who are so talented but also respect what everyone brings [forth],” said Maddie Casto, a local actor who portrays an evil wizard in the show.

Casto has acted all over the country but said she feels incredibly grateful to be part of a production of this scale in Charleston.

“Myself and the other two gentlemen who are portraying the wizards — we’re constantly pinching ourselves that we get to be a part of this,” Casto said. “What [the Smiths] are doing, and the opportunities that [they’re] giving Charleston performers, whether it be someone like me who will be onstage, musicians in the pit, kids who are in college, is huge and does not happen in Charleston.”

With beautiful original music and an impressive mix of Broadway, off-Broadway and local performers making up the cast, Daniel and the Kings is sure to be an awe-inspiring show.

White Gallery on Coleman Boulevard unveils a new exhibition, Trip Line Drop, featuring the works of Masáre , aka Mauricio Sánchez Rengifo, and Scott Parsons with an opening reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 25. Casey Berry, owner of the downtown store The Paper Canopy, hopes to help inspire folks to write, draw and send letters with her offering of supplies such as stationery, wax seals, fountain pens, bookbinding tools and more

New stationery store celebrates the art of paper

The act of handwriting and mailing a letter seems to be a lost art these days. For most Americans in the digital age, it’s not a common occurrence.

College of Charleston (CofC) alum Casey Berry hopes to keep that art alive with the Aug. 12 opening of her new stationery and craft store downtown on Spring Street, The Paper Canopy. Berry said she hopes to bring to Charleston something that had been missing — and create new excitement around an old-fashioned tradition.

“I moved [in 2021] from Colorado back to the South to open The Paper Canopy,” Berry said. “I love Charleston, and when I started poking around, I realized there’s no awesome paper store.”

Berry said the grand opening party this month was a success.

“We were blown away with the immense support from the Charleston community and the excitement for our new shop. I am so grateful to be in such a creative and enthusiastic community,” she said.

The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Berry also has plans to hold workshops during which attendees can learn skills from local artists and crafters.

Before the brick-and-mortar store, Berry operated an online retail space and vended at pop-up markets in the Charleston area where she met other local makers and received feedback on what she was car-

rying. This feedback helped her curate the shop’s stock toward the interests of the local creative community.

The Paper Canopy shoppers will find stationery basics and more niche items, such as wax seals, which Berry said were very popular during pop-ups. So much so that she decided to create a wax seal bar in the shop for people to build their own seals in a variety of colors.

Even the basics are elevated, from marbled papers made by Bangladeshi women and a curated selection of fountain pens to a wall of cards from all over the world and journals made with recycled materials. The shop also boasts crafting kits for all ages and work by local artists.

Planting seeds of creativity

Berry’s love for paper products began when she studied abroad in Italy as an art history major in 2009 and learned bookbinding and papermaking.

“When I was in Italy, I was like, ‘OK, I’m so into this tradition of paper,’ and I was just exposed to so much, and it let me dip my toe in and say, ‘Maybe I can be an artist,’ which feels like such a scary thing for a lot of people to say.”

At CofC, Berry originally wanted to study studio art, but “felt too insecure and not good enough” to pursue the degree.

“I talked to so many people who say, ‘I’d like to try, but I don’t feel creative,’ and I [really] resonate with that conversation

with yourself. Now I can say I’m an artist. I’ve taken that on, and I feel really excited to help other people dabble and start to play, whether they call themselves an artist or not.”

She also hopes the store will cultivate inspiration for new artists as well as experienced artists, writers and crafters alike.

“I would love for people to walk in and feel inspired to write, paint, create, whatever they do … and see things that you haven’t seen before or learn things because there’s so many cultural traditions.”

The shop encourages letter writing, crafting and putting words on paper — a welcome contrast to the constant communication we are used to in the digital age.

“Almost everything in [the shop] is to help you slow down, help you connect with your hands. … I love going out and sketching a new place I’m in.”

The little things ground Berry to the present, like a good fountain pen, a present wrapped in craft paper with hand-dyed silk ribbon or a suncatcher window sticker.

She recounts the experience of a friend who needed a new beginning and wrote a plan longhand with a fountain pen.

“There was something about the fresh start and intentionality. It just helps me get started to make changes, and I know that sounds crazy, but sometimes you just need the right tool.”

Behind everything in The Paper Canopy is Berry’s hope to live her “most colorful life” and share the beauty of that with others.

Howard’s book club explores food stories

The website for Vivian Howard’s Charleston restaurant, Lenoir, states, “Food with a story tastes better,” and her guests at the celebrity chef’s August book club are ready with stories about whole hogs and long nights.

For instance, Ryan Mitchell, who will be featured at the book club with his dad, tells a story about his father, Ed, known for cooking whole hog. Ed Mitchell barbecued the first whole hog of his life when he was just 14 on the back end of his grandfather’s farm in Wilson, N.C.

“My great-grandfather was a sharecropper with 35 children. He and the other guys in the family were cooking a hog and had nodded off after a night of moonshine,” Ryan Mitchell said. “My dad, without waking anybody, jumps in and got the fire back going, stoked the wood and kind of saved the event. He finished cooking that hog all by himself, and when my great-grandfather woke up and saw what he had done, he gave him a shot of moonshine as a reward.”

The stories of the South are what make it so colorful, and celebrity chef Vivian Howard is intent on preserving those stories with her book club, which will feature Ed and Ryan Mitchell on Aug. 27.

The book club has been increasingly popular since its inception about a year ago. This month, the Mitchells will speak at Lenoir, Howard’s Wentworth Street ode to her own Southern roots. The Mitchells are releasing Ed Mitchell’s Barbeque, a book of smoked meat and savory stories. Howard’s staff will provide bites inspired by the book.

Diving into barbecue culture

Ed Mitchell is one of the founders of the Big Apple Barbecue Festival in New York, which grew to host 100,000 people using 16 whole hogs by the time the festival ended in 2017. When the pandemic slowed life down, it seemed a good time to revisit an offer they had to create the book.

Ryan Mitchell said his family prefers the spelling “barbeque” to “barbecue” because it implies cooking the whole hog, whiskers to tail. “Once we’d done all the research, we discovered from

Wilmington, N.C., to Charleston, there were French and Portuguese influences on enslaved ancestors. The language they used to communicate was called Plantation Creole and they spelled it ‘que,’ ” he said.

Mitchell said he and his father make their sauce the North Carolina way with a vinegar base that has “some crushed red pepper, a little bit of hot sauce, paprika, salt and pepper.” They use oak wood and charcoal to cook their hogs. He added that a 135pound hog takes “a solid eight to 10 hours” to cook.

It’s not an easy task, and Mitchell said he’s intent on passing down the importance of this kind of cooking.

“It’s hard, it’s very difficult,” he said. “I just think evolution is a real thing, and people are feeding themselves in so many different fashions now. Cooking an animal for 10 hours or standing over a pit in any form, well, people have evolved into much easier ways to feed themselves, and they aren’t connecting with the nostalgia of fire and wood and man’s original form of survival.

“If you look at it just like, ‘I am hungry and want to get some food,’ you will figure out the easiest way to eat something, but if you look at it like, ‘I want to have a spiritual or nostalgic experience to feed myself and my family or customers,’ then it becomes a different way to appreciate the experience.”

Preserving the stories

Preserving the stories and the foodways is one of the reasons Howard started her book club.

“I got cooking because I wanted to be a food writer. That’s always been my first love,” she said. “I came to love cooking through cookbooks. I never had a mentor, but I poured myself into cookbooks and got a lot of my technical education that way. Lenoir is a restaurant meant to show you how Southern food is not like a monolithic thing. It’s all different tastes and treasures.

James Beard award-nominated chef Kevin Johnson and his wife Susan of The Grocery have opened Lola Rose , a second concept in Mount Pleasant. The coastal Mediterranean-inspired restaurant will showcase ingredients from local farmers, foragers and fishermen and is open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

Gold Star Coffee opened its location at 3293 Maybank Hwy. on Johns Island. The woman-owned coffee shop features a full espresso menu and is open 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Enjoy seafood and cocktails at Sunsets located at 97 Ronnie Boals Blvd. on Shem Creek open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The seafood restaurant offers selections from its raw bar, appetizers, entrees and drinks.

Somewhere South, she was a product of the other Carolina, but Charleston has made room for her.

“Charleston is such a funny place,” Howard said. “At once, it caters to tourists but has a committed and longstanding community that lives there. For a lot of people, it’s not the most welcoming. But I’ve spent a lot of time here and, with having the book club, almost half of the tickets are the same people every month, and they are all locals.”

Given Howard’s fame, the book club could easily grow, but she is intent on keeping it intimate, with chairs crowded into the dining space at Lenoir.

“I think, unfortunately, when things get really big, they’re just not as good,” Howard said. “I think we could sell 200 tickets and have it in an auditorium, but we’d lose the intimacy and that feeling of a conversation between me and the author and the group.”

She said she sees more intimate gatherings as her future and a reprieve from large-scale “turn and burn” events where she said everyone, from the attendees to the chefs, leave wanting more.

“I am trying to do more things like this, more intimate events where everybody leaves knowing each other’s first names. I see it fitting into what I want to do in the next decade. This is where I am as a person.

Downtown European eatery Azur, located at 159 Market St., is now offering lunch service from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.

What’s happening

Party with Jalisco Taqueria every Friday in September. The James Islandbased Mexican-inspired restaurant will host Parking Lot Parties from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Friday next month. The family and dog friendly parties will offer margaritas, music and tacos.

Sip wine at the Charleston Summer Wine Festival from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Charleston Harbor Cruise Terminal. The festival will feature 50 different wines, mimosas and beers as well as a DJ and live music. Tickets are $55 in advance and $65 the day of the event.

Enjoy beer, trivia, food trucks and music at Two Blokes Brewing from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30. Publik Education will host an English pubstyle trivia game. The trivia is free to participate, and food trucks will be available on-site.

Celebrate Labor Day weekend at Pier 101 Sept. 3 and 4 with live music and food and drink specials.

“Being able to bring in cookbook authors who represent different parts of the South and then expanding to different types of authors with a food connection … it’s been fun and a natural way to engage in the restaurant.”

The book club also has been a way for her to engage in Charleston, her adopted town. Known for her PBS show about her North Carolina restaurant, A Chef’s Life, and, later, her exploration of Southern Food,

“We all are craving these intimate kinds of events where we get more out of it than we put in. I feel the book events are like that for me and for the guests. In the last decade, I was meeting thousands of people, and all of them have had this intimate connection to me through TV. I wanted to feel some of that, I wanted to feel what the people watching were feeling, that intimate connection.”

Test your luck by buying a signature chocolate bar at Hotel Bennett’s La Pâtisserie . The bakery’s acclaimed French Pastry Chef Rémy Fünfrock has hidden a golden ticket in one of the bars for his Rémy and the Chocolate Factory contest. The winner will receive a lifetime of free pastries.

The ‘fundamental colors’ of Susto

The latest record from long-time Charleston indie rock act Susto entitled My Entire Life feels like releasing a deep sigh of relief after a long journey.

Frontman Justin Osborne’s songwriting is narratively introspective on the 12-song LP, hitting a melancholic nerve with the ornamental roots rock songs strung together with wishes and visions. “The sonic landscape is affected and mirrored by the narrative,” Osborne told the Charleston City Paper. “I’d say the narrative is the center of the band. I know that’s not really what everybody wants from music, but that’s what we do. It’s an exploration of the human experience.”

While the members of Susto are not all local anymore, My Entire Life was mostly recorded at Charleston studio The Space with producer Wolfgang Zimmerman, who has played an important creative role in the group since its first album in 2014. The band recorded sessions for the album in other studios in North Carolina, Georgia and Mexico.

Susto returns Sept. 2 for a hometown show at The Refinery with North Carolina rock band Big Something and Charleston indie act Easy Honey.

My Entire Life is sonically intricate. In addition to Osborne on vocals and guitar, Marshall Hudson on drums, percussion and piano, Kevin Early on bass and Johnny Delaware on guitar, synth and keys, there are instrumental contributions from former Susto bandmates Dries Vandenberg of

Human Resources, Dylan Dawkins of Persona La Ave and bassist Jordan Hicks as well as Zimmerman.

While the band has switched up its members throughout the years, Hudson and Delaware have worked with Osborne since day one.

“It’s taken a long time to get as comfortable with each other as we are,” Osborne said. “We disagree a lot — everybody has a different opinion and a different perspective. And I think that’s what really helped us — it just creates this well-rounded editing process to where what we all think works best moves to the front and gets perfected.”

A culmination of experiences

Almost half the songs on My Entire Life revealed themselves to Osborne during a time of major life changes after finishing up the 2021 album Time in the Sun, he said, while songs such as “Rock On” and “Break Free, Rolling Stone” were written several years earlier.

“I write stream of consciousness,” he said. “I felt like there was something going on in me that I hadn’t really reckoned with, and the songs were pointing to that. Then a lot of things in my personal life came to a head and a lot of big shifts happened, and I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve written this song thinking I was writing about this, and it means so much more to me now in a different way.’ And I think that was probably the most surprising thing, seeing how the songs evolved in meaning to me, the creator of them.”

Hudson, who doubles as drummer and art director for the band, said he intended the album cover to be a visual summation of Susto, just as the title My Entire Life signals encapsulation. The cover is an oil painting

“The album represents a lot of maturity for the band and for Justin as a songwriter,” Hudson told the City Paper. “I wanted this cover to borrow pieces from all the other albums. And I wanted it to kind of look like a progression from Time in the Sun. That’s why this painting works so perfectly, because it has that little sun in it. Also, the guy depicted in the cover has indistinguishable knuckle tats. Justin has ‘acid boys’ on his knuckles, so that was a happy accident.”

The new album is Susto’s “own little version” of country folk, Osborne said. While the band’s signature sound is a mesh of rock ‘n’ roll, psych-folk and clever one-liners, My Entire Life captures a piercingly emotive and wise culmination of Susto.

“We’re not shying away from the hard topics, because we need music for that too,” Osborne said. “It’s a band very inspired by Southern gothic and confessionals. A lot of the literary inspirations are taking that same sort of lane.”

High Fidelity: Your Top 5

Ali Sylvester is one funny lady. She teaches and performs at Theater 99 regularly and also teaches drama to kids at different schools around Charleston. But what really defines Sylvester is her thoughtfulness and inclusivity, Ohm Radio writes. “Ali has a kind heart, a funny soul, and if you are lucky to be in her orbit, you are better off for it,” said Vikki Matsis, Ohm Radio’s president. Sylvester couldn’t quite narrow down her list to five albums considering how obsessed she is with the Hamilton soundtrack and the hilarious comedic songs on Bo Burnam’s Inside compilation — so Charleston City Paper narrowed it down for her. Check out her top five albums below:

Getting to know indie rock act Lantana Fields

Delving into the backstory of the Charleston band Lantana Fields takes a little work, as does explaining the act’s music.

The artist moniker Lantana Fields is a bit of a Sade or Alice Cooper situation — the band operates under the name Lantana Fields, but it also serves as a stage name for frontwoman Dani Thomas.

“It is a band,” Thomas said. “All the music that’s been made has been with the same people. The same band. Basically I would say that Lantana Fields is also my artist stage name, because there could potentially be a time where it might not necessarily always be those people playing with me. We are all Lantana Fields at this point, I’m just the face of it.”

Lantana Fields is, in one sense, a working band featuring singer/guitarist Thomas, guitarist Stephen Payne, bassist Matt Varner, drummer John Gornati and keyboardist Russell Green.

Virtually every member of the band plays in various projects throughout the Charleston area, most notably Gornati, who also plays drums for Leopard & The Diamond Sky.

So far, Lantana Fields has created three singles, and they’re all very different from one another stylistically.

was intended to capture a drug-induced high. Osborne holds a bitterness in a resigned tone as he sings about addiction and despair: “Is it freedom, is it pain / When it’s standing still in your veins / Tell me you’re sick / Or are we all just fallin’ to pieces.”

new singles “No Good for You” and “Joanna” stitch together mod-pop with dance rock and ’80s-glistened dreaminess. The band performs at the Tin Roof at 9 p.m. Aug. 31.

this year, and it’s a beguiling slice of indierock, with guitars that both drift and sting, and a start-stop rhythm that pushes the song forward with subtlety and grace.

The next single was “Joanna,” released last June. This is the first song in which synths are present in a forward-facing, noticeable context, and Thomas expertly navigates the song’s sparse verses and the lush chorus with ease.

The new single dropping Sept. 29 called “Dexies/Downers” is currently in the demo phase of recording, but acoustic and electric guitars are prominent, and there’s an alluring Neko-Case-style echo on Thomas’ dreamy vocals.

Osborne said two of his brothers struggle with addiction, which weighs heavily on his mom. His mournful lyrics are succinct and wrenching: “Now she’s feedin’ on lost souls just like a prophet / But with drugs like that, who needs God anyway.”

That Susto continues to put out music is evidence of the power of human connection.

“The thing that’s been the driving force

The most mysterious aspect of Lantana Fields is the recording process. Thomas said the band records at a place called Secret Cottage, but she wouldn’t reveal much more than that.

“Secret Cottage is a recording studio, it’s a collective, and it’s a label,” Thomas said. “And it’s in Charleston. It is a very unique group of people. Most of the people that come in and out of Secret Cottage, there’s a reason that they’re there — they somehow stumble upon it and find it.”

The band takes the stage at Tin Roof in West Ashley at 9 p.m. Aug. 31 for its next show. Tickets are $10 cash at the door.

for me has really been the people around me,” Osborne said. “Sometimes I’m lazy or neglectful of the actual times that matter the most, arguably, which are sitting down and trying to write about what I’m feeling. On this record, over half the songs [came from] people pushing me. And I’m thankful for it because a lot of times I don’t have confidence in myself.”

Free Will Astrology

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Climate change is dramatically altering the Earth. People born today will experience three times as many floods and droughts as someone born in 1960, as well as seven times more heat waves. In urgent efforts to find a cure, scientists are generating outlandish proposals: planting mechanical trees, creating undersea walls to protect melting glaciers from warm ocean water, dimming the sun with airborne calcium carbonate, and covering Arctic ice with a layer of glass. In this spirit, I encourage you to incite unruly and even unorthodox brainstorms to solve your personal dilemmas. Be wildly inventive and creative.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “When love is not madness, it is not love,” wrote Spanish author Pedro Calderon de la Barca. In my opinion, that’s naive, melodramatic nonsense! I will forgive him for his ignorance, since he worked as a soldier and celibate priest in the 17th century. The truth is that yes, love should have a touch of madness. But when it has more than a touch, it’s usually a fake kind of love: rooted in misunderstanding, immaturity, selfishness, and lack of emotional intelligence. In accordance with astrological factors, I assign you Tauruses to be dynamic practitioners of genuine togetherness in the coming months: with hints of madness and wildness, yes, but mostly big helpings of mutual respect, smart compassion, tender care, and a knack for dealing maturely with disagreements.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini author Iain S. Thomas writes, “There are two things everyone has. One is The Great Sadness and the other is How Weird I Really Am. But only some of us are brave enough to talk about them.” The coming weeks will be a favorable time to ripen your relationship with these two things, Gemini. You will have the extra gravitas necessary to understand how vital they are to your full humanity. You can also express and discuss them in meaningful ways with the people you trust.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A self-fulfilling prophecy happens when the expectations we embrace actually come to pass. We cling so devotedly to a belief about what will occur that we help generate its literal manifestation. This can be unfortunate if the anticipated outcome isn’t good for us. But it can be fortunate if the future we visualize upgrades our wellbeing. I invite you to ruminate on the negative and positive projections you’re now harboring. Then shed the former and reinforce the latter.

out, “Hurry up, please — it’s time.” He wants the customers to finish their drinks and leave for the night. Now imagine I’m that bartender standing near you. I’m telling you, “Hurry up, please — it’s time.” What I mean is that you are in the climactic phase of your astrological cycle. You need to finish this chapter of your life story so you can move on to the next one. “Hurry up, please — it’s time” means you have a sacred duty to resolve, as best you can, every lingering confusion and mystery.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Addressing a lover, Scorpio poet Margaret Atwood says, “I would like to walk with you through that lucent wavering forest of bluegreen leaves with its watery sun & three moons, towards the cave where you must descend, towards your worst fear.” That is a bold declaration. Have you ever summoned such a deep devotion for a loved one? You will have more power and skill than usual to do that in the coming months. Whether you want to or not is a different question. But yes, you will be connected to dynamic magic that will make you a brave and valuable ally.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian theologian N. T. Wright writes, “The great challenge to self-knowledge is blind attachment to our virtues. It is hard to criticize what we think are our virtues. Although the spirit languishes without ideals, idealism can be the greatest danger.” In my view, that statement formulates a central Sagittarian challenge. On the one hand, you need to cultivate high ideals if you want to be exquisitely yourself. On the other hand, you must ensure your high ideals don’t become weapons you use to manipulate and harass others. Author Howard Bloom adds more. “Watch out for the dark side of your own idealism and of your moral sense,” he writes. “Both come from our arsenal of natural instincts. And both easily degenerate into an excuse for attacks on others.” Now is a good time for you to ponder these issues.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The holy book of the Zoroastrian religion describes a mythical mountain, Hara Berezaiti. It’s the geographic center of the universe. The sun hides behind it at night. Stars and planets revolve around it. All the world’s waters originate at its peak. Hara Berezaiti is so luminous and holy that no darkness can survive there, nor can the false gods abide. I would love for you to have your own version of Hara Berezaiti, Leo: a shining source of beauty and strength in your inner landscape. I invite you to use your imagination to create this sanctuary within you. Picture yourself having exciting, healing adventures there. Give it a name you love. Call on its invigorating presence when you need a sacred boost.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo journalist Anthony Loyd has spent a lot of time in war zones, so it’s no surprise he has bleak views about human nature. He makes the following assertion: “We think we have freedom of choice, but really most of our actions are puny meanderings in the prison yard built by history and early experience.” I agree that our conditioning and routines prevent us from being fully liberated. But most of us have some capacity for responding to the raw truth of the moment and are not utterly bound by the habits of the past. At our worst, we have 20% access to freedom of choice. At our best, we have 70%. I believe you will be near the 70-percent levels in the coming weeks, dear Virgo.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libra poet T. S. Eliot wrote the iconic narrative poem “The Wasteland.” One part of the story takes place in a bar near closing time. Several times, the bartender calls

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn playwright and novelist Rose Franken said, “Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.” That’s interesting, because many traditional astrologers say that Capricorns are the least likely zodiac sign to be silly. Speaking from personal experience, though, I have known members of your tribe to be goofy, nutty, and silly when they feel comfortably in love. An old Capricorn girlfriend of mine delighted in playing and having wicked good fun. Wherever you rank in the annals of wacky Capricorns, I hope you will consider expressing these qualities in the coming weeks. Romance and intimacy will thrive if you do.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): As I work on writing new books, I often draw on inspirations that flow through me as I take long hikes. The vigorous exercise shakes loose visions and ideas that are not accessible as I sit in front of my computer. Aquarian novelist Charles Dickens was an adherent of this approach. At night, he liked to walk around London for miles, marveling at the story ideas that welled up in him. I recommend our strategy to you in the coming weeks, Aquarius. As you move your body, key revelations and enriching emotions will well up in you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The coming months will be an excellent time to build, discover, and use metaphorical bridges. To get in the mood, brainstorm about every type of bridge you might need. How about a connecting link between your past and future? How about a nexus between a task you must do and a task you love to do? And maybe a conduit between two groups of allies that would then serve you even better than they already do? Your homework is to fantasize about three more exciting junctions, combinations, or couplings.
