Dwarf palmettos tolerate the high-salinity soil in the Francis Marion National Forest. The surrounding pine and hardwood trees, however, are stressed and dying because of sea level rise, said Alton “Tripp” Gaskins, a U.S. Forest Service silviculturist or tree specialist.

Francis Marion forest exhibits fatal signs of saltwater intrusion

Emerging threats to the Francis Marion National Forest lay at the end of a path that divides pines sprouted in the bygone-era of large-scale tree farming from ancient hardwoods planted by Mother Nature. Alton “Tripp” Gaskins, a U.S. Forest Service tree specialist, hiked to the end of the old path where dry ground turns to moist soil and small ponds near the Wando River in the Huger area. From there, he pointed to the surrounding “ghost forest” of dying or dead trees. They have succumbed to relentless seawater. In this area where timber companies still harvest trees for lumber, the once lush evergreens are now sparse with yellowing crowns. On the old-growth side, sturdy maple and black gum have shed green leaves and morphed into mammoth pencil-like sticks silhouetted against the morning sky. Gaskins first saw these changes in July when satellite images revealed a sliver of yellow on the ocean side of the 260,000acre forest. “I have seen trees that have been dead for years,” said Gaskins, who has 14 years of service with the agency. “It has been happening slowly over time, but for whatever reason, over the last year or two, it has sped up to where you can visually see the spread. “The environmental changes are happening quicker in this area due to the crumbling infrastructure of dikes and ditches

A pitch tube is created when a tree expels a pine beetle with sap. The sap dries to form white blotches on the bark. Saltwater intrusion is stressing pine trees, making them susceptible to the beetles. put in place by the industrial timber companies,” Gaskins said. The decaying infrastructure allows seawater to flow fast into that portion of the forest, he explained. The strip of yellow shows where the forest is being stressed under salt water pushed inland by more intense storms and rising ocean levels, he said as he tromped over a golden carpet of fallen leaves and brittle twigs.

Change is coming fast

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that sea levels along the U.S. coastline will rise in the next three decades by 10 inches to a foot. For South Carolina’s coastline, the prediction warns that sea levels will increase

by slightly more than two feet by the end of the century. When saltwater intrusion stresses pine trees, they become susceptible to a fatal pine beetle infestation, Gaskins said. The combined punch of pine beetles and seawater accelerates a tree’s death. What’s happening in the forest is a harbinger of how sea level rise will ultimately affect where humans live and how animals, large and small, will be affected by the changing ecology, scientists said. Not much can be done to stop the rise immediately, but its impact can be lessened, they said. Mažeika Patricio Sulliván, a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation and director of the Baruch Institute for Coastal Ecology and Forest Science at Clemson University, said it is imperative to protect the South Carolina coastal region, a mosaic of tidal creeks, rivers, sea islands, marshes and wetlands, that stands as a buffer between the ocean and high ground. As a nursery for aquatic life and migratory birds, it also supports the state’s tourism industry, he said. Marshes can adapt overtime, but sea level rise is happening too fast and, when combined with coastal development, marshes can’t keep up, said Sullivan, who researches aquatic ecosystems. “The great example of saltwater intrusion is the ghost forest,” he noted. Charleston Animal Society (CAS) on Dec. 9 declared a spirited tabby and a dashing Bernedoodle to be the 2023 winners of its fourth annual Rescue Brew contest. This year’s competition, which raised more than $82,000 for No Kill South Carolina and to end animal cruelty, showcased not only the charisma of the area’s four-legged friends but also the overwhelming support of the community’s homeless animals, said Joe Elmore, president and CEO of the society. The group announced the results at Palmetto Brewing Company, a sponsor with the Charleston City Paper and other businesses. The two victors — a Bernadoodle dog named Melvin and a tabby named Pickle — were selected through a dollar-per-vote system among a fierce pool of 540 competitors. After stealing the hearts of thousands of voters, Melvin and Pickle are now featured on cans of the latest batch of Rescue Brew, currently available in some local stores. —Lily Levin

Traffic remains big concern

Adjacent to the Sumar Street development project, Ashley Landing sees significant traffic issues stemming from the “suicide merge” of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Old Towne Road. Summerfield said, however, that is high on the list of concerns Faison is keeping in mind moving forward. “As a part of any larger redevelopment — and this is in essence replacing an existing development — they’ll have to look at any traffic generation based on any increase of intensity or footprint,” he said. “In the future, replacing the old Publix building with a more intense development — especially one that includes a residential component — they will need to look at more large-scale traffic and transportation options.” For now, he said, developers are focused on improving the ingress and egress of traffic in the Ashley Landing shopping center. At the same time, several traffic improvement projects led by Charleston County are on the way, including changes to neighboring intersections at Charlestowne Drive and Old Towne Road, and Amberly Street and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. And at the large intersection of Orange Grove Road and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, plans are tentative. The corridor is heavily traveled, with most traffic turning left from Orange Grove onto Sam Rittenberg to head to the bridge and the arterial Interstate 26.

Yet again, S.C. has some of the country’s worst drivers

6

By Lily Levin The Palmetto State has previously been home to some of the country’s worst drivers — and a new 2023 report said this year was no exception. South Carolina ranked eighth among states with the most incidents per driver, according to a LendingTree study of the 50

states and the District of Columbia. The assessment looked at wrecks, DUI charges, speeding citations and other traffic violations using a year’s worth of data from insurance quotes ending in October. “It’s genuinely an intense experience every time you leave your house” to drive somewhere, said South Carolina native Avery Detitta, who is currently studying at

the College of Charleston. According to the data, the Palmetto State had a little more than 29 incidents such as wrecks and violations per 1,000 drivers. But it wasn’t as bad as Rhode Island, topping the list with more than 51 incidents per 1,000. Maine took the second spot with CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

A North Charleston police officer on Dec. 5 wrestled with a suspect, eventually coming to blows, before discharging his taser three separate times to force the suspect to stop fighting. Now, we aren’t advocating for entering fisticuffs with your local patrol officer, but if you’re going to, you’d obviously better make sure you can take a few hits from a taser. Stern talking-to Mount Pleasant police on Dec. 6 reported a man threatened to destroy his own vehicle when his family told him he couldn’t drive it that day. It almost goes without saying that the man was intoxicated. Police advised him “to not destroy any cars.” Christmas shopping Two North Charleston women on Dec. 4 reportedly stole nearly $1,000 in perfume sets from a Dorchester Road beauty store before driving away. The investigation is ongoing. Advice: Get your Christmas shopping done early so you don’t have to steal. just over 50 and California came in third at about 40 per 1,000 drivers. The safest place to drive was Michigan, which boasted a slim rate of 11.28 incidents per 1,000 drivers, the study reported. Lowcountry residents told the Charleston City Paper they weren’t surprised by South Carolina’s showing. Detitta said classmates often ask to borrow her car, but both she and a friend have agreed to always decline requests from their out-of-state peers. That’s because of the level of traffic, Detitta explained, and the problematic “way the roads are set up” are things unique to South Carolina. She added that these issues span the entire state. “It’s the same in Charleston and Columbia. There are just a lot of intersections that were very poorly made.” When it came to the rate of car crashes, South Carolina ranked even higher. The state, with nearly 20 accidents per 1,000, came in sixth place — just behind the neighboring North Carolina. Massachusetts, Rhode Island and California took first, second and third, respectively; Michigan again came in last.

Forest CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4

As scientists and policymakers consider the impacts of saltwater intrusion “we should start to think of the scope of those impacts. It ranges from trees to habitat for birds to aquatic organisms,” he said. “The more natural wetlands we can protect, the more the systems will be buffered against that rise. There is going to be change, but can we minimize that change and help to slow it down?”

A plan to save the forest

A management plan for the Francis Marion National Forest, developed in 2017, calls for the restoration of the natural native ecosystems with an emphasis on longleaf pine, Gaskins said. The service has the potential to plant about 40,000 acres of longleaf pine that was once the predominant tree in the forest, he said. “We could start logging this area before the spring. The restoration could start in the next year or two.” Longleaf pine lives longer and allows more sunlight to the forest floor, and it is resistant to fire. The fast-growing loblolly was once the tree of choice for timber companies, he added. If left alone, pine beetles will spread “to private property and destroy private timber,” he said. “We have the potential to use this opportunity to restore the native swamp and marshland.” The untouched hardwoods throughout the forest, he said, is pristine and looks like the time centuries ago when Lowcountry forests were cleared for rice cultivation. The Baruch Institute uses its extension

Not a shock

But the state’s large number of wrecks wasn’t much of a shock to residents, either. Devynn Sweat told the City Paper that she witnesses traffic accidents constantly in downtown Charleston, where she’s been living her entire life. People “are losing their lives daily,” she added. Fellow downtown resident Tammy Malloy concurred. “Charleston’s full of dangerous driving, and I’ve traveled all over the country.” In Atlanta, where Malloy lived for eight years, she said she “never had a problem.” Charleston, however, “was an adjustment.” Though Malloy doesn’t drive anymore, she remarked that the conditions have only been getting worse — and they’re especially lacking for pedestrians. “You really have to watch [as a pedestrian]. [Drivers] don’t pay attention to pedestrians. I see it all the time.” When asked why South Carolina seems full of bad drivers, Sweat spoke of a false sense of urgency that people tend to have when they’re trying to get somewhere. Detitta said the roads were to blame. But both agreed with Malloy, who said, “Drivers need to do better.”

service to educate people about ecological practices to heal the environment, Sullivan said. The choices range from rain gardens to beach erosion protection. “As scientists, we can help provide data and solutions, but people have to be our advocates to implement that. It is all about how we think about protecting critical places,” he said.

New approaches

As part of its efforts to help nonprofit groups carry out habitat enhancement that benefit marine life, NOAA has a new grant program that focuses on climate impacts, said Howard Schnabolk, a habitat restoration specialist with the agency’s fisheries restoration center in Charleston. The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is one of several groups around the country that has received NOAA grants for underserved communities to help develop environmental protection projects and hire the staff to do the work, he said. The corridor has received a $536,000 three-year grant to support two new staff positions — a resilience associate and a climate advocate, he said. The corridor will also share a $499,000 grant with two North Carolina coastal counties. In South Carolina, the corridor will study environmental impacts of sea level rise in the Awendaw and McClellanville, Schnabolk said. He added the new positions will help build relationships between restoration organizations and Gullah Geechee communities to identify the resilience priorities of community members, and form local advisory committees to support future restoration efforts.

Season’s greetings, happy holidays, Southern courtesy and all of that ’T

Views 12.15.2023

is the season to be jolly. And, more likely than not, you’re going to hear lots of people saying Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Feliz Navidad, Happy Kwanzaa or Joyeaux Noel. Every now and then, you might get a Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays. A wag or two might even wish you Happy Festivus. We encourage you to embrace any of these felicitations for what they are — good tidings for a season of joy for whatever holidays they recognize. We hope you won’t go down any rabbit holes from people who shout there’s a war on Christmas or any other religious holiday. Despite some religious conspiracy theorists who fly this soiled banner every year, there’s just not a war on celebrating the holidays and the advent of a new year. In fact, wishing “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” to someone might just be plain old Southern courtesy if you don’t know how someone worships. Why? Because there are more than 20 different religious holidays between now and the 12th day of Christmas on Jan. 5. In case you didn’t realize, here is a list of some of the coming 2023 and early 2024 holidays celebrated by different people and religions at this time of the year, according to an interfaith calendar:

8

Dec. 7-15: Season of Hanukkah, Judaism Dec. 16-24: Posadas Navidenas, a nine-day Latin American religious observance honoring the quest by Mary and Joseph for shelter. Dec. 21: St. Thomas the Apostle, Christian Dec. 22: Yule/Winter Solstice, Wicca/Neo-pagan Dec. 24: Christmas Eve, Christian Dec. 25: First day of Christmas, Christian; Feast of the Nativity, Orthodox Christian Dec. 26: Zarathosht Diso, Zoroastrian; St. Stephen’s Day, Christian Dec. 31: Watch Night, Christian Jan. 1: Feast Day of St. Basil, Orthodox Christian; Shogatsu/Gantan-sai, Shinto; Jan. 5: Twelfth Night, Christian; Guru Gobindh Singh birthday, Sikh. Jan. 6: Epiphany, Christian and Orthodox Christian. Jan. 7: Christmas Day, Rastafarian

As we rush to stores to buy gifts for family and friends to celebrate our seasons, let’s remember to slow down soon, respect the varying religious traditions and count our blessings for the year to come. Happy holidays (all of them!)

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life. 2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation. 3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras. 4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy. 5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community. 6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow. 7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone. 8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate. 9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan. 10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Trump is exactly who he says he is By Andy Brack

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through the years, it’s that people often will expose their souls and tell you exactly who they are. When they do, you need to take them at their word. They are exactly who they say they are. So when Donald Trump says he’ll be a dictator for a day if he is elected to a second term as president, he’s not pussyfooting around. He’s telling America — the land of democracy, not autocracy — that he will be a dictator. That Hitlerian world view is real, not something that he will be able to turn off like a water spigot. And as Washington Post Editor at Large Robert Kagan suggests, what happens if he doesn’t get everything done on Day One of being a dictator? Would there be a Day 2, 3, 4? Or maybe that would turn into freedom’s greatest nightmare — a dictator in the White House for four years who won’t follow the Constitution. “The problem has never been knowing what to do,” Kagan wrote Dec. 7. “In the past, stopRepublicans not ping Trump has required people taking risks and smitten by Trump, making sacrifices that they did not want to make, whether out of selfishness, fear or ambition. independents and “Today, the challenges are even greater but there Democrats need is little evidence that the people we need to rise to the occasion are any more likely to do so than they to coalesce now to have been for the past eight years.” do everything they To thwart Trump, who has the backing of more than 50% of GOP voters in South Carolina can to make Trump according to a recent Winthrop Poll, the Republican Party needs to coalesce behind a single and his red hats as alternative candidate, Kagan says. All the money and the endorsements should shift to her as quickly as possible.” And the next big thing that must happen, he said, is that leaders from U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney to President Joe Biden must communicate over and over how Trump is unelectable because he is fundamentally unacceptable. “Trump’s dictatorial tendencies and open disdain for the Constitution can become his greatest vulnerabilities — they might be his only vulnerabilities — if sufficiently highlighted for the American voter.” But Haley and her foes aren’t exploiting Trump’s vulnerabilities. Rather, they seem to continually affirm his acceptability as president, Kagan writes. And the big problem is that unchallenged, he Andy Brack will get worse, issuing more threats and persecutions. is editor and Trump’s increasingly authoritarian messaging, such as calling publisher of Democrats “vermin” — the same label Hitler gave to communists — has Charleston one seasoned South Carolina political observer seriously worried. e don’t know about you, but this holiday season, we are exclusively bellying up to holiday bars. We want it all — the lights, the trees, the ornaments the size of our heads — and based on the packed crowds we’ve seen around town this month, you want it too. The folks at Hotel Emeline, which is currently home to a festive winter courtyard, and at The Ryder, home of Little Pine (the holiday version of its bar and restaurant, Little Palm), have extended the decked-out dates, with both holiday iterations running through mid-January. What is it about festive holiday bars that inspires such cheer? In 2019, Eater Atlanta editor Beth McKibben theorized people just want to escape, if only for a spiked eggnog or two. “I do think these bars spark nostalgia in people and give them a little bit of comfort,” she wrote. So, whether you’re seeking comfort, cheer or just a really good Irish coffee, we’ve got a few holiday bar suggestions for you.

Photos by Ashley Rose Stanol

Hotel Emeline’s Courtyard

Hotel Emeline’s courtyard features a tree-lined yurt village this season. General manager of food and beverage at Emeline, Adam Jimenez, said: “From our festive decorations to The Den’s cheeky holiday cocktails to the winter courtyard’s tree-lined yurts — these activations were designed to evoke the holiday spirit and encourage conviviality. Our Winter Courtyard was inspired by our desire to transform the space into an entirely new holiday destination for our guests to discover.” You and your pals can rent a yurt through Resy. The “festive fondue experience” is $50 per guest and comes with guaranteed cozy vibes. If you’d rather skip the yurt experience, feel free to sit by the outdoor fire and order shareable plates and festive drinks from the Frannie & The Fox menu. Don’t sleep on “today’s mozzarella,” which is, in fact, made in-house daily.

Blind Tiger

Surround yourself with more ornaments than Santa has at the North Pole at the festively outfitted Blind Tiger bar. Sip on a seasonal cocktail — here’s lookin’ at you gingerbread espresso martini — and stay a while. Snap a few pics. Your Instagram feed will thank you.

5 downtown bars with holiday bites By Connelly Hardaway If you find yourself holiday shopping downtown and in desperate need of a bite and drink, we’ve got you covered. While most bars and restaurants around town will be getting into the holiday spirit, there are a few standouts that we’ll be frequenting, from chic oyster bars to cozy pubs. The best part? These spots do not require reservations. (Make the day even better by using the city’s free 2-hour parking voucher.) Visit charlestoncitypaper.com for a list of several other designated pop-up holiday bars.

The Quinte

36 George St. • Open Thursday through Monday Earlier this month, former FIG chef Jason Stanhope joined hospitality company Method Co. to re-open the oyster bar, the Quinte, located in the Pinch Matthew Williams hotel. Described as a “casual, inventive” oyster bar, the Quinte is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Monday. Belly up to the (very chic) bar, order some fresh-shucked oysters and take a load off.

Bumpa’s

5 Cumberland St. • Open Wednesday through Monday If there’s something cozier than a pub during December — Charleston’s balmy weather conditions, be damned — we have yet to find it. Tucked off of East Bay Street, Bumpa’s doesn’t take itself too seriously, offering guests everything they want and need from a pub, from hot wings to a robust cocktail menu to plenty of TVs for watching sports games.

Bin 152

152 King St. • Open daily It’s a classic for a reason. Step into Bin 152 and take a deep breath; the quaint space is just the spot to refuel with a glass (or two) of wine and a cheese board shared with friends or enjoyed all by yourself.

The Den

Prohibition’s Sippin’ Santa

Prohibition recreates itself as Christmas bar Sippin’ Santa this season, decked out in self-proclaimed “over-the-top Christmas” decor. The “tropical companion” to Handcraft Kitchen & Bar’s Miracle Bar, Sippin’ Santa is also an international pop-up franchise. Find the full drink menu online. All the festive cocktails are served in special mugs and glassware — here’s lookin’ at you surfin’ Santa — and drinks include tiki classics as well as new cocktails crafted just for this year.

If you prefer sipping your holiday drinks exclusively indoors, just pop over to The Den, located in Hotel Emeline’s restaurant, Frannie & The Fox. The martini bar has a special holiday menu, of course, but if you want to stick to its traditional offerings, we don’t blame you. Nothing says celebration like full martini service and a side of caviar, no? If you do choose a drink from bar manager Amanda Phelps’ ’90s-inspired holiday list, might we suggest the Sex on the Slopes, made with Absolut, cardamom and ginger-infused giffard peach, chambord, cranberry, orange juice and lime.

76 Queen St. • Open daily We recently visited Husk Bar and were impressed by the spot’s renovated outdoor patio (hello, louvered pergola). Whether you sit outside, you don’t need a reservation to snack on snapper ceviche and country ham and cheese beignets. Wash the snacks down with one of Husk’s inventive cocktails, and you’ll be ready to conquer the rest of King Street.

The Living Room at The Dewberry

Andrew Cebulka

334 Meeting St. • Open daily We’re suckers for classy holiday lights, and the front of The Dewberry really draws you in with its display. Walk through the doors to the lobby bar, The Living Room, and relax in the reading library. Sure, you could make your way up to the rooftop bar, the Citrus Club (which is divine!), but we personally prefer the classic Mid Century Modern vibes of The Living Room. From experience, we can promise that the pommes frites pair perfectly with The Living Room Martini.

North Charleston’s Park Circle has something for everyone By Diane Knich North Charleston, once eclipsed by the city of Charleston, has come into its own in recent decades. It is now the third-largest city in South Carolina and the area’s economic engine. The city, first incorporated in 1972, is home to more than 114,000 people, and that number continues to grow. Despite its industrial past, North Charleston has begun to attract advanced tech companies. The city also is a retail hub, from malls and Big Box stores to neighborhood boutiques. And at the center of it all sits the Park Circle neighborhood, a vibrant, walkable community bounded by Interstate 526 on the north side, Waterfront Park and the Cooper River on the east, Noisette Creek on the south and Mixson Avenue on the west.

Living in the community

Jamee Haley, a Park Circle resident, consultant and interior designer, said she and her husband have owned a home in the neighborhood for the past 20 years. They rented it out for years, but when they became empty-nesters five years ago, they moved in and loved the convenience of the location and “the immense sense of community,” she said. “It’s a fun place to be, with numerous restaurants, breweries and wine bars to patronize.” She said she also appreciates that she can walk or ride her bike anywhere in the neighborhood and can develop relationships with area business owners. Haley, once director of Lowcountry Local First, said she would like to see the city take active measures to keep the business disIt’s a fun place trict local, and to avoid it becoming “homogenized.” She also said that to be with a big change she has seen in the numerous neighborhood is that along with an increased popularity, Park Circle is restaurants, getting more expensive. Ryan Johnson, a spokesman for the breweries and city, said Park Circle is a great place wine bars to to live and a wonderful place for area residents and tourists to visit. patronize.” He said Park Circle was set up for —Jamee Haley success because it was designed as a “garden city,” based on Ebenezer Howard’s vision from the late 1800s of a community where residential, commercial and greenspace coexist in a walkable area. But by the mid-1990s, the business district had declined. Outgoing Mayor Keith Summey, who has served as mayor since 1994, thought the area was consuming more revenue than it was bringing in. So he set about bringing the business district back to

life. Those plans and funding mechanisms were effective, Johnson said. Summey, once involved with a Park Circle restaurant, didn’t run in the last election and will step down in January to make way for new mayor Reggie Burgess, the city’s former police chief, first Black mayor and a North Charleston native.

Thriving local restaurants, businesses

James Hartzog is the general manager at Madra Rua, an Irish pub on East Montague Avenue that has an array of cozy restaurants and bars. He said the area was much quieter when the pub opened in 2003. But people involved with Madra Rua knew it would grow — investment by the city of North Charleston helped that happen — and current growth has exceeded expectations. For example, about 300 people attended the

city’s 2003 St. Patrick’s Day parade on East Montague, he said. Now, the parade and block party draw about 12,000 visitors. Corrie Wang, co-owner of Jackrabbit Filly on Spruill Avenue, opened in 2019 serving New Chinese-American cuisine. She said she and her husband found the space for their restaurant in Park Circle close to their home. The area is “lovely and quiet but not pretentious, and it attracts a good mix of everybody,” she said. Shopping in Park Circle can also be a lot of fun. The Station Park Circle, a vintage marketplace on Spruill Avenue, opened in 2018. Owner Sharon Payer said the business has grown, and in July, it expanded to adjacent space. Payer said she values sustainability, and 95% of the merchandise in her store is vintage or handmade. That’s consistent with Park Circle, she said. “I feel CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

like it fits with the style of this community and its diversity.” She also said more retail businesses continue to open in Park Circle, along with restaurants, breweries and other businesses. She loves to see the growth as long as the businesses are community oriented, she said. “It’s great to be part of it.”

Something for everyone

Johnson said Park Circle is a great place for regional visitors and tourists, too. He recommends people from out of town find lodging in North Charleston, where it is less expensive. After spending a day wandering around Park Circle, they are in a central location from which they can explore

Charleston and the rest of the region. Another advantage of the area: Park Circle has a lot to offer people who want to spend time outdoors. The center of the large traffic circle — a roundabout where Montague, Buist, Rhett and Durant avenues meet — contains a community center, ball field and the new and wildly popular inclusive playground where people of all ages and abilities can have fun. City leaders say it is the largest of its kind in the world. Disc golf enthusiasts also enjoy the sport on a free course on the outer edge of the circle. People can also participate in events, walk the greenspace and take in the views at nearby Waterfront Park or visit the ducks in the pond at Quarterman Park. Whether you come to play during the day or to enjoy the food, drink and nightlife, Park Circle has something for everyone.

Lost Isle brings live-fire cooking to Johns Island

What’s new

Woodhaven Pizza is set to open in Mount Pleasant later this month. The New York-style pizza restaurant is the third concept from BENE Hospitality founders Ty and Karen Mennuti-Raju, who have also opened Mount Pleasant spots SAVI Cucina + Wine Bar and Sommba Gastrobar. Woodhaven is located at 1701 Shoremeade Road and will be open daily. Follow @woodhavenpizza on Instagram to stay up to date with opening dates and hours. The Matador offers two festive fundraising cocktails this holiday season. Now through Jan. 2, $1 of sales on the Cocoa Carajillo and Hot Buttered Rum supports the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Why so serious?

“It’s super casual. There are enough people around to answer your questions,” said Lynch of Lost Isle’s bar service model. Lynch, who, along with Richard Knapp, opened New York City’s Mother’s Ruin, a “dive-meets-cocktail bar,” as described by Punch magazine, in 2011, is a fan of orderat-the-bar establishments. Lynch told the Charleston City Paper that after years of working in fine dining, he appreciated the laidback nature of a bar service model. And while drinks are integral to all of

What’s hot Lost Isle’s menu will change seasonally, but you can always expect a solid selection of proteins to be grilled with a variety of fresh adornments Lynch’s spots, high quality doesn’t have to mean picky. As he told Punch in 2017, “Everything’s up for interpretation… You might not even get the same drink in the same kind of glass twice.” After walking into Lost Isle and checking out the menu, guests can order food and drinks and seat themselves. If it’s cold out, Lynch said fire pits and blankets will keep guests toasty. Think of it like attending a best friend’s bonfire, with the added benefit of housemade cocktails, a curated wine list and fresh, made-to-order dishes. Chef Josh Taylor is joined in the kitchen by sous chef Matt Priede and lead cook Sam Tucker. Formerly of Root Note Food, Taylor has crafted a seasonally focused menu with frequently changing specials and dishes, like whipped ricotta with smoked tomato, wood-fired oysters with chili butter and delmonico steak with chimichurri. Sticking to that laidback, casual vibe, Lynch said Lost Isle isn’t in the business of serving up $60 steaks; he and his team want visitors to have a “quality supper” without breaking the bank. “Chef Josh and I had so many ideas,” Lynch said. “It was hard to narrow it down into a produce-able menu.” They managed, though, and although the rotating options help keep things interesting — “so we don’t get bored,” joked Lynch — there will be a core selection of grilled options, including a whole fish, tomahawk pork chop and cauliflower steak. While Lynch hammers home the idea of a

Eater announced its 2023 awards this month, and North Charleston’s King BBQ made the list as Best New South Carolina Barbecue. Eater Carolinas editor Erin Perkins wrote: “Restaurateurs Shuai and Corrie Wang have a way of taking a well-worn idea and introducing a fresh touch that, for some reason, no one else is doing, and creating a spark.” Kultura, which was named one of Eater’s 12 Best New Restaurants earlier this year, was also deemed South Carolina Restaurant of the Year.

Chef Josh Taylor serves up small plates like wood-fired oysters with chili butter and much more casual spot, he is sure to note that Lost Isle will stick to its posted hours. Currently the restaurant is open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily, but it’s never a bad idea to check out the spot’s Instagram beforehand if the weather is particularly bad. “We’ve been doing this way too long,” laughed Lynch. “A lot of people are just excited for something different. When options become very similar, it gets boring very fast.”

Head to Firefly Distillery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 16 for the distillery’s fourth annual holiday market. In addition to a wide array of vendors and food trucks, Firefly hosts three craft cocktail classes, featuring seasonal recipes. The classes will be held at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and tickets can be purchased ahead of time at fireflydistillery.com. Vicious Biscuit celebrates five years at its flagship Mount Pleasant location on Dec. 22. Guests can enjoy $5 anniversary menu items at all six locations, including one in Summerville. Walking into Lost Isle, an open-air concept located at 3338 Maybank Highway, feels a little like walking onto, well, a lost island. The name is fitting for a spot that’s quirky without trying too hard, featuring chandeliers floating among the Spanish moss of live oak trees. The outdoor space, which is covered by swaths of sail cloth, fits a niche that owner TJ Lynch said he and partners Thomas Wilson and Josh Taylor have been looking to fill for a while. “We’ve been trying to do this for a long time,” said Lynch, who noted that it can be difficult to find the right zoning for this kind of establishment. “It’s odd how many people don’t want you to cook in a way that we used to cook.” And while modern zoning requirements may force live-fire establishments through more hoops than usual, the method of livefire cooking appears to be as popular as ever. Last year, finedininglovers.com declared that “open flames and heat” were “dominating the narrative” of dining out; earlier this year, Club Oenologique, an online publication for fine dining and wine lovers, stated, “The primal art of live-fire cooking is at the cutting edge of the restaurant world.” Sure, Bon Appetit magazine deemed livefire all the rage back in 2015 — which may just go to show that the trend is more than a trend and that the technique is now firmly situated in our modern dining landscape.

Catch a circus show under the Gaillard’s big top By Chloe Hogan Circus, burlesque and cabaret collide for a mesmerizing performance created for the Charleston Gaillard Center by one of London’s most prominent West End entertainment producers. There are seven chances to see Cabaret Royale between now and the final 9:30 p.m. performance on Dec. 22. Cabaret Royale is part of the Gaillard’s second annual Spiegeltent programming this November and December. This special show is also the U.S. premiere for Underbelly, the U.K.-based entertainment company that produced the work. Katharine Arnold, one of the show’s aerial performers and creative director, told the Charleston City Paper during a phone interview from London that viewers of this multifaceted show can expect comedy, aerial and acrobatic acts, as well as performances by clowns and burlesque artists. “We’ve all created some new acts just for this show,” Arnold said. “This particular

show hasn’t been seen anywhere else before.” She said Underbelly is excited to premiere its U.S. show in the Gaillard’s Spiegeltent. “Underbelly has a huge history of being the biggest producers of the Spiegeltent in the U.K., but it will be the first foray into doing something in the United States. We’re all really excited to come and bring this show to Charleston,” Arnold said. If you haven’t caught a performance at the Spiegeltent yet — or driven by it on Calhoun Street — it’s a gorgeous historical circus tent which offers an extra special setting for a show like Cabaret Royale. “It’s a tent, but it’s all made of wood and mirrors,” Arnold said. “You have a small stage in the center, so the audience is all around the action, and it feels very intimate. There’s a lot of connection between the performers and the audience.” Renowned performer Grace Lusk will This sense of connection is a facet of serve as the ringmaster for Cabaret CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

the Cabaret Royale performance and the Spiegeltent programming as a whole, which the Gaillard’s CEO Lissa Frenkel is particularly keen on. “We have created a more intimate way to engage with our audiences and to create a Charleston holiday experience that’s specifically associated with the center,” Frenkel said. The Spiegeltent is one of only 37 of these mirrored tents left in the world. They were originally built in Europe in the late 1800s. “It’s a pretty special place for these performances to happen. We’re dealing with world-class performers in a tiny tent with 200 people. And so it’s really an opportunity for Charleston to rub shoulders with these really cool and interesting artists.”

The cast of performers

The renowned cast of performers includes Grace Lusk, a stand-up and character comedian and clown hot off of five years headlining Spiegelworld’s OPM at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. She got her start in the Chicago comedy scene and learned clowning at the Los Angeles clown company The Idiot Workshop. Grace has performed on many stages with her off-the-wall comedy. She will serve as the ringmaster of the show and a participating clown and stand-up comedian. Circus artist Charlie Wheeller will perform on a cyr wheel, an acrobatic apparatus that consists of a single large ring made of aluminum or steel. He’ll present acrobatic acts alongside Arnold, who

became a finalist on France’s Got Talent in 2015 for her aerial performances. And circus performer Josie Jones will perform the ancient and impressive art of hair suspension — which is exactly what it sounds like, an acrobatic performance while suspended by her hair. Finally, expect burlesque performances by Miss Jolie Papillon, an award-winning, internationally known dance star who’s made a name for herself through her sensual performances inside a giant martini glass. The show is for people ages 18 and older due to partial nudity, adult themes and strong language. “We know it’s going to be extraordinarily high quality,” Frenkel said. “The burlesque and aerial performance and artistry is just at another level. Underbelly are really master craftsmen when it comes to telling stories through circus and engaging audiences in that way. So we are just delighted to be able to provide this quality of performance here in Charleston.” Tickets to Underbelly start at $70 and are available for purchase at gaillardcenter.org. The last performance is at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 22.
