Outgoing Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg has a lot that he’s proud of accomplishing in his eight years as mayor. But he says the coolest — something that reaches deep into his heart — is how the community came together to make a big dent in homelessness. Flash back to 2016 when Tecklenburg took over for longtime Mayor Joe Riley. Scores of people lived in a tent city under Interstate 26. Tecklenburg and the city brought together area leaders to work with the Palmetto Project to start the Homeless to Hope Fund to provide emergency help to people facing homelessness. In the years since, thousands received aid. “What we’ve developed are the resources to help people either when they’re homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to keep that time period as short as possible and to help people get to a better place,” he said Dec. 18 in his first in-depth interview since the Nov. 21 runoff election. And then he and his wife, Sandy, went a step further to work with others to help

people find new places to stay. And today, years later, there’s a program that keeps a warehouse filled with donated home goods to help people get a start. “We help you find a place,” he said. “We have you outfitted with furniture and belongings from a nonprofit warehouse. And it all gets delivered and set up

by former offenders who have a moving company. All at no charge. So yeah, I think that’s pretty cool.”

Plethora of accomplishments But there are a lot of other accomplishments related to Charleston’s challenges over the last eight years. “We built a lot of stuff — new fire stations, a police forensics center, and we improved the firefighter memorial,” Tecklenburg said. “We bought property for future parks, improved government operations and efficiency and dealt with eight named hurricanes, a pandemic and a national, if not global, reckoning on race relations. The pandemic was like having another whole job added on top of the one we have.” Water. With a Dec. 17 nor’easter that reminded residents of the power of water, dealing with water and managing it for the future has been the biggest, continuing challenge. Tecklenburg said the city made great strides in dealing with

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg introduced a resolution to support a change in the way S.C. voters elect local officials during his final city council meeting Dec. 19. The resolution, released last week, calls on the state legislature to add instant-runoff, or ranked-choice, voting as an alternative method for municipal elections. Ranked-choice voting eliminates the need for runoff elections by allowing voters to rank candidates and then eliminating the lowest vote-getter until one candidate has a majority of ballots cast. Supporters of the measure also say the new voting method would save cities like Charleston money. The most recent runoff election between Tecklenburg and Mayor-elect William Cogswell in November cost the city more than $105,000. The resolution calls on state legislators to pass a bipartisan bill, H. 4022, which was introduced in the House in February. It currently is in a House committee awaiting action. The bill would add instant runoff voting to the three existing methods of voting for municipalities — the plurality method, the election and runoff election method, and the primary election and general election method. If adopted, local governments would still have to opt into using rankedchoice voting. —Skyler Baldwin

The mother of a College of Charleston student who was struck and killed in January 2014 along the busy Septima P. Clark Parkway wants an existing pedestrian bridge over the parkway moved closer to the Coming Street intersection. State highway officials, however, will likely propose other changes along with safety improvements on Riverland Drive on James Island where four people were killed in a single-car crash Nov. 18.

Mothers seek traffic safety changes on 2 deadly roads Traffic deaths on roads on James Island and across Charleston link two grieving mothers who lost their children. They’re asking state officials to impose safety measures to prevent future accidents on the dangerous roads where their children died. On James Island, two sons of resident Jametta Hamilton — her only children — and two of their friends died Nov. 18 when an SUV carrying them and the driver crashed into a massive oak along Riverland Drive that’s called “the Widowmaker.” Earl Hamilton Jr., 29, James Hamilton, 27, Tyler Barron, 29, and Mitchell Watson, 26, died at the crash scene, according to Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal. The driver, who was not identified, sustained serious injuries. Charleston police said an investigation is continuing. At midnight on Nov. 18, James Hamilton celebrated his 27th birthday with his brother and their friends, said James’ and Earl’s mother, Jametta Hamilton of James Island. The oak stands close to the roadway near a ditch in a sharp curve on Riverland Drive. Because of fatal accidents and a rash of collisions, Hamilton wants it cut down. Hamilton questioned that if oaks can be

removed to build houses, “why can’t they take down an oak for lives to be saved?” In January 2014, 21-year-old Lindsey Taylor Ranz died after being struck at the Coming Street and Septima P. Clark Parkway intersection on the Charleston peninsula. Since then, her mother Lynette Ranz, of North Charleston, has asked state officials to build an elevated crosswalk at that intersection. The S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is currently doing a study to find safer ways to walk across the parkway where eight pedestrians have been struck and killed since 2012. Kelly Moore, the agency’s director of public engagement, said the 2020 Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Action Plan should be completed in early 2024. Following ongoing conversations and a recent meeting with state lawmakers and SCDOT officials it appears the mothers might get some of what they’re asking for.

What families can expect

At a recent meeting of the Charleston County Legislative Delegation’s roads and bridges committee meeting, Hamilton said if the tree is spared, she’d like to see flashing CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Charleston County shares holiday recycling tips Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department is asking residents to stay green this holiday season through curbside recycling programs and local drop-off centers. Christmas trees, used cooking oils and other items can be composted (assuming all decorations have been removed). Some municipalities will pick up trees curbside, or they can be taken to one of Charleston County’s eight staffed convenience centers. All paper, including gift wrapping,

water, from the Dutch Dialogues about learning to live with water to multiple projects that now are underway and will be finished in coming years to drain and manage high tides and flooding. Examples include rewrites to the city’s zoning laws to reduce density in lowlying areas and projects like the SpringFishburne tunnel system to drain the Crosstown Expressway, the Low Battery infrastructure renovation, the King-Huger street pump station and the proposed perimeter protection plan. “It’s a work in progress,” Tecklenburg said Dec. 18. “But [the storm from] yesterday is a prime example of the continuing need to protect our city long-term.” Climate. Charleston is the only city in the state to have a climate action plan, Tecklenburg noted. “We’re beginning to make some significant progress — electrification of vehicles, composting, recycling, reducing plastic bags in the environment, reducing energy through changing out all of the streetlights and redoing city energy systems.” Parks. In the Nov. 7 general election, Charleston voters approved $70 million for future parks. They will be built on new land purchased in West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island and Daniel Island. The city also opened several new parks during his terms. New bridge. Tecklenburg pointed to the bike-walk bridge that has been contracted to be built over the Ashley River. “That’s huge. It’s the last missing link of the East Coast Greenway,” he said, adding, “It will be the first safe connector between the peninsula and West Ashley.” Employees. The mayor also said he was proud of the city’s 1,800 employees who serve residents every day. “We’ve improved communication and reduced silos,” he said, noting bolstered efficiencies of city govern-

For example, it instituted a Citizen Service Desk that now handles 7,000 calls a month in a coordinated fashion, resulting in 1,500 work orders to fix problems and make repairs. Race relations. Tecklenburg said the city moved forward during his tenure in “telling the full story of our sometimes horrid history of slavery and [making] our apology for slavery.” He also listed taking down the John C. Calhoun statue in Marion Square as an accomplishment. IAAM. Tecklenburg said part of his legacy is tied to the legacy of the former mayor, Riley, who spearheaded the creation and multi-million-dollar funding of the International African American Museum. During Tecklenburg’s terms, the city broke ground on the building — “the most complicated building ever built in Charleston’’ — constructed it and opened the museum.

What’s next on tap?

When the 68-year-old Tecklenburg leaves office Jan. 8 after former GOP state Rep. Williams Cogswell is sworn in, he says he’ll probably hang his commercial Realtor shingle again and dabble in real estate. And he’s planning to write a book about his Uncle Fud — Charleston native Joseph Anthony Livingston (1906-1957), an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, arranger and composer who made a major impact on Big Band music of the 1930s. By 1924 after being kicked out of The Citadel, he was in Chicago playing music with two other teenagers — Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. “It’s a great story,” Tecklenburg said. “He was just awesome and talented.” Tecklenburg, also known for playing jazz piano, said he’ll probably also do a little tickling of the ivory in his post-mayoral life. And he and his wife will keep doing the one thing they’ve always done — helping more people.

lights, barriers and warning signs at the tree and along the road to prevent future fatalities. SCDOT has recommended more safety signage, reflectors in curves in the roadway and object markers at the base of trees within 5 feet of Riverland Drive, according to a review of the road completed after the Nov. 18 accident. The review does not recommend removing the tree on Riverland Drive, designated in 1988 as a State Scenic Byway. “SCDOT continues to evaluate these historic corridors for potential safety improvements,” Moore said in an email to the Charleston City Paper. “As a matter of practice, SCDOT works to preserve the grand oak trees in the area because of their historic and environmental value to the community.” “While we continue to evaluate the status of the tree, SCDOT plans to install additional signs as soon as we can get it scheduled with our crews,” Moore said. James Island resident and Republican state Sen. Sandy Senn said the death of Hamilton’s sons and their friends is “every mother’s nightmare. I am heartbroken.” Senn said she worries about her teenage son when he drives near the tree and through two sharp curves on Riverland Drive between George L. Griffith Boulevard and Grimball Road. The victims of the Nov. 18 crash were not wearing seatbelts, Charleston police said. “We all teach our children to wear their seatbelts,” Senn said. “But if there is anything we can do to make the [roadway] safer, then we need to do that. If it is not enough, we will have to go back and revisit.”

Ranz said she’s concerned she was not notified of the recent legislative delegation’s committee meeting. “I want to be a part of making safety changes because that intersection [along the Crosstown] took lives, and it took my daughter’s life,” she said. If installing an elevated crosswalk is not an option, Ranz said SCDOT should consider flashing signs warning motorists to prepare to stop and speed limit lights that flash when motorists drive too fast. Transportation committee chairman and state Rep. Matthew Leber, R-Charleston, said safety measures will likely include more safety signs. Leber said he’ll keep an open mind on the elevated pedestrian walkway and if it is not in the SCDOT report, he’ll ask why it is not being considered. Rep. Wendell Gilliard, D-Charleston, said more signs along the parkway is a cheap solution. An elevated crosswalk, he said, is the best answer to save lives. Gilliard said the existing pedestrian bridge over the Crosstown is obsolete and should be moved closer to the King Street end of the parkway.

Blotter of the Week

Security footage near Liberty Meadows Drive recorded a North Charleston man on Dec. 5 standing on another man’s porch for about an hour. Eventually, a delivery man approached, and the man spoke with him, took the package for himself and left. We have to admit: That’s a bold new strategy in porch piracy. Going for a dip Mount Pleasant police on Dec. 5 helped a drunken man out of a lake after he apparently stumbled into the backyard of a Ranns Hill Road man, fell into bushes and later into the water. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespassing, but the detention center was unable to keep the $100 in various bills found in his pockets — they were too wet. Advice: Just take the cab Charleston police on Dec. 1 woke up a sleeping man at a downtown bar and offered to call him a cab to get home. The man reportedly declined several times, even declining a ride to a hospital due to his level of intoxication. With all other offers declined, police took him into custody instead. EDITORIAL

Foundation should find another steward for the historic Nathaniel Russell House T he Historic Charleston Foundation opened a big can of worms with recent news that it plans to sell the Nathaniel Russell House, which it purchased in 1955 to keep it from being subdivided. The reason? Times have changed, and the foundation accomplished its mission in preserving the house. And now, because times have changed, it wants to focus resources on doing even more to advocate for additional preservation as Charleston grapples with everything from the increasing pressure of development, gentrification, the need for more affordable housing, threats from climate change and the stresses of more people visiting the Holy City. The foundation, which says the sale isn’t related to financial difficulties, outlined how with more money from a sale — and not having to pay fixed and variable costs associated with running a house museum — it will be able to do its overall preservation job even better. So rather than people castigating the Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF) for a difficult, strategic decision that will allow it to do more for the area, we should be thanking the foundation for its thoughtful coming transition of the Nathaniel Russell House. If you want to see what the organization can do to benefit the community in a larger way, just consider its leadership role this year in slowing down and turning around the trajectory on a harmful plan to develop Union Pier. Talk about the greater good. In the grand scheme of things, the foundation seems

to have taken a responsible approach to dealing with the future of the house. It says there is no current buyer or price. “HCF intends to engage in a thoughtful, deliberate process in determining the next steps for the house. Of utmost importance is ensuring that any potential future owner ensures the highest level of preservation for the house. Every protection available, in the form of protective easements, will be placed on the house to ensure it remains preserved and an integral part of Charleston’s architectural legacy.” So for anyone squawking who probably hasn’t visited the house in a generation, what’s wrong with that? The foundation, which saved and protected the house for 70 years, will use covenants, restrictions and easements to make sure it remains in good hands and, it hopes, keep it publicly accessible as a historic site. That’s what it’s supposed to do. Sure, it would be best if the buyer is another foundation, trust, research university or nonprofit organization. Sure, it would be better if the house doesn’t just become another trophy home for a rich family that doesn’t live here. But transitioning the house to a responsible owner who will continue to preserve it and then using those resources to keep historic Charleston strong are enviable strategic priorities for our community. So thank you, Historic Charleston Foundation, for your past stewardship of the Nathaniel Russell House and for your thoughtful future planning for its continued preservation. Critics will continue to criticize, but you should forge ahead.

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life. 2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation. 3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras. 4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy. 5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community. 6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow. 7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone. 8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate. 9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan. 10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

OPINION

There’s more good news out there than you might think By Andy Brack Many of the themes in this weekly column highlight discouragement — policies and events in South Carolina that aren’t optimal or could work out better for regular people.

Examples: The need for better education, health care, roads, wages, gun reform, fair voting, less political division and on and on. But for all of the challenges that South Carolina has, there are signs of encouragement during this holiday season. Some examples: Clemson’s getting a vet school. For South Carolinians to become veterinarians, they now have to go out of state to get training. More than 200 students are now doing that. But in 2026, Clemson will start enrollment for the state’s first veterinary school, something long needed here. Clemson’s new vet college is fueled by a $285 million investment by the General Assembly. “The new college will continue to elevate the state of South Carolina by meeting the needs of our communities, retaining top talent, supporting the state’s economy and protecting animal and human health,” Clemson President Jim Clements said in June. Daily international flight. Charleston airport officials announced the state is getting its first daily international flight from Air Canada between Charleston and Toronto, two of the world’s top cosmopolitan destinations. What an indicator of progress! Now in less than three hours, you can be in Canada.

“Air Canada’s announcement is a major milestone for our industry, the Charleston region and beyond,” said Helen Hill, CEO of Explore Charleston and chair of the Aviation Authority Board. “International visitation is integral to a healthy and sustainable tourism economy.” Big Sumter investment. As a tip to South Carolina’s solid manufacturing economy, a German company that makes rare earth permanent magnets is investing $500 million in a Sumter County facility. It shows how the state is a key player in the growing electric vehicle industry. GOP House Speaker Murrell Smith, who lives in Sumter, commented: “The arrival of e-VAC Magnetics in Sumter County is a testament to our state’s booming economic growth and our commitment to fostering an environment that attracts business and opportunity.” More infrastructure. In fact, infrastructure investment across the state thanks to billions of dollars of federal Covid-era funds are making us more competitive, meaning that South Carolina has used recovery dollars strategically and well to position itself for the future, one seasoned state official said. One example is how broadband internet connections will be ubiquitous within three years. At present, the state’s billions in spending has brought faster internet to about three-quarters of the state. Up next — connecting the last mile of rural areas across the Palmetto State. Another example — the state and local governments have spent $1 billion in recent years improving water and sewer infrastructure.

South Carolina still has a long way to go to catch up in everything from education to health care, but we continue to be on our way. Low unemployment rate. South Carolina remains blessed to have a low unemployment rate — just 2.9% in the most recent report — meaning there are jobs out there for just about anyone who wants to work. These jobs may not be the highest paying in the nation, but there’s work around, particularly with increased investment by companies from the Upstate to the coast. “Nearly every economic sector grew or stayed the same month-over-month, with increases in sectors like finance and insurance, as well as professional, scientific and technical services, which includes jobs like computer systems design, engineering and research and development,” S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce Executive Director William Floyd said last month. South Carolina still has a long way to go to catch up in everything from education to health care, but we continue to be on our way. That’s good news for the holiday season. Santa Claus shares funny, heartwarming holiday stories By Skyler Baldwin

Feature Feature12.22.2023 12.22.2023

emories of sitting on Santa’s lap at the mall are common among adults — even if those memories are more about the tearful screaming. But those memories are just as treasured by Santa Claus himself, according to several folks who have portrayed him for families over the years. “I loved it. I absolutely loved it,” said Charles Brack, a Georgia native who played Santa for more than 20 years in Ohio and Pennsylvania. “I had such a good time. When you put on the suit, you think, ‘I have all this time,’ and it seems like forever. But it zips by so quick. I would go back tomorrow if I could, but I’m just not able.” Brack, the 81-year-old mayor of rural Allentown, Ga., isn’t alone in thinking the holidays just aren’t quite long enough. Back in the day, Brack’s Santa season started Nov. 1 and ran through Dec. 24. For others, it’s even shorter, only starting in December. “I wish Christmas could be more than one month a year,” said Kent Coish, who dons the suit for Santa Paws at Red’s Ice House in Charleston. “Christmas brings a lot of joy to a lot of people’s lives. That’s why I love playing Santa Claus — I like to make people laugh and smile every day.” At the James Island Holiday Festival of Lights, several people portray Santa, allowing the attraction to have the big guy on stage every night starting Nov. 10. “The way they come running up to you and hug you,” said one of the Santas who identified himself only as Santa Dave, “they’re just in awe. They look up at you, and it’s like the whole world is in front of them.” Santa Dave has been working at the Festival of Lights since 2018, but has played the big guy in other places for more than 20 years, he said.

Memorable moments

Those who have spent any time in the big red suit have no shortage of stories to tell, from funny to heartwarming to heartbreaking. “This little boy came in to see me, and his mom and his dad and both sets of grandparents were there,” said Brack, a cousin of the City Paper’s publisher. “He was obviously the only grandchild. He said, ‘Santa, I’m a big boy. I sleep by myself all night. Mommy and

“I had one kid ask me for an escalator because he hated taking the stairs every day. I looked at his folks, and they said, ‘We live on a farm. What do we need an escalator for?’ ” —Santa Dave hospital to see him. He died before I finished that year — shortly after that visit.”

Robots, toy' gun, escalator

And, of course, everybody always asks, “What’s the craziest thing a kid has asked for for Christmas?” “I had two 5-year-old twins, and the first twin wanted, you know, robots,” said Coish at Red’s Ice House. “And I looked at the other twin when he came up, and I said, ‘Well what do you want?’ He looks at me square in the eyes and goes, ‘A gun.’ His mother was right there, and she said, ‘A toy gun.’ But it didn’t sound like that!” Santa Dave also said kids ask for everything from peace on Earth to new Barbie dolls, but there was one funny request that stuck with him. “I had one kid ask me for an escalator because he hated taking the stairs every day,” he said. “I looked at his folks, and they said, ‘We live on a farm. What do we need an escalator for?’ It’s always kind of crazy. It’s just whatever they come up with as they’re walking up there.” Pictures of Santa with animals also are popular, Brack said, but not every bring-your-pet night goes smoothly. “I’ve had everything from a frog to snakes and ferrets and bunnies,” he said. “Mostly dogs, of course. One girl, who actually worked with us, brought in a bunny and a ferret. And if you don’t

know, to a ferret, a bunny rabbit is lunch. The ferret immediately bit the rabbit, and I had to pry those teeth apart to get them off.”

A tough gig'

Some may think Santa looks warm and cozy in the big red suit, especially in the middle of December, but they can get a little too warm, some said. Throw in the more than 20,000 visitors that a Santa can get in a season, and you’re in for some rough shifts. “I wear an ice vest under the suit because it gets so hot,” the anonymous Santa Dave said. “It actually circulates water all through it to keep the whole thing cool. The problem is that it’s only good for a few hours.” And one sitting as Santa can last well beyond that. “It’s a tough gig,” Brack said. “I would show up for a 12-hour day every day except Thanksgiving. In my 20 years, I missed about five days for sickness, and every time I would come back, families would come and retake the pictures because the kids would say, ‘That wasn’t the real Santa yesterday.’ ” Kent Coish, who But despite the long hours and plays Santa at rough schedule, even working Red's Ice House, through a cold, in Santa Dave’s has two suits case, the kids keep them coming — one for pets back. and one for people “You’d think I’d learn after 20 years,” Santa Dave said, laughing. “But it’s the kids. It really is.”

Getting the picture

Every Santa has strategies for getting kids to sit just long enough for someone to snap a photo. “A couple things you always do — I always wear white gloves,” Santa Dave said. “Those are cartoon character hands. You

Santa has seen it all, from kids in casts to quintuplets

can’t have an actual hand showing, because that would scare the kids. But the white gloves, they realize that and give you a highfive. It breaks the ice.” Santa Gary, another Festival of Lights Santa, has a rubber duck he uses to distract the kids for a second. “It’s a learning experience,” Brack said. “You just meet the kids where they are. I learned an awful lot about people being Santa.” In some cases, though, he said, there’s no need for any strategies. “They cry, they scream, and the screaming pictures are gorgeous,” he said. “They’re beautiful because it’s so unique, it’s different.” Santa Dave agrees. “Some of them — nothing works. Some are just screamers,” he said, laughing. “They’re all excited on the way up, but then all of a sudden, they’re there. And we don’t help, you know. You tell your kids all year long, ‘Stranger danger! Get away from the dirty old man.’ Then, one day a year, you get up and say, ‘Here, sit on his lap!’ ” Lily Levin contributed to this story.

Daddy don’t like me to sleep with them anymore, except when Daddy is out of town.’ I said, ‘That’s really good. Your mom needs the company when your dad is gone.’ He said, ‘Yeah, except for whenever Uncle Bill comes over, then I have to go back to my room.’ The woman’s face was beet red. The man’s face was beet red. I thought the best thing to do was to get them out of there, so I said, ‘Well, tell me what you want for Christmas!’ ” Brack said he likes to tell people now that he’s helped several couples get engaged — and at least one get divorced. Santa Dave also had a fun memory. “We had a young couple and their parents come up just the other night for a photo,” Santa Dave said. “They said, ‘This is our first Christmas picture.’ The parents were confused, ‘What do you mean?’ And they said, ‘For our new little one.’ That was their pregnancy announcement. They were all excited of course. That was probably the youngest kid ever brought to see me as Santa.” Not every story is happy, but the sad stories are just as important, Brack said. “I’ve seen kids beat cancer. I’ve seen kids lose to cancer,” he said. “A little boy, Chucky … they would always bring him to see me and dress him like Woody from Toy Story. They called me one year, told me Woody was in the children’s hospital with bone cancer. One night, after I got off the throne, they picked me up, and I got the suit on, and we went to the

Élevé chef Naim traveled the world, found home in Charleston

Chef Mahdi Naim has worked in fine dining restaurants around the world, from New York City to Hong Kong

Mahdi Naim, the executive chef at Élevé at the Grand Bohemian Hotel, has worked in kitchens for nearly 20 years in New York City, Hong Kong and Amman. Drawn by its charm, Naim moved to Charleston in 2022 after living in New York City with his family. With a focus on Italian, French and Japanese cuisines, Naim brought his wide range of culinary skills to the Holy City. Born in Amman, Jordan, Naim grew up watching his mother bake fresh breads filled with cheese and meat, pickle a colorful variety of vegetables, mix spice blends, dehydrate sun dried tomatoes, preserve lemons and press olive oil. The smell of baked bread, thyme and olive oil was a constant in his home, and food was always a core element of his childhood. Naim earned his culinary degree from the Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Switzerland. After leaving culinary school, he would go on to work in fine dining for some of the world’s most renowned chefs, like Masaharu Morimoto, Massimo Bottura, Alain Allegretti, Gert de Mangeleer and André Chiang — all of whom have won highly acclaimed awards like the Michelin star for their fine dining menus and service. “It first started as just a paycheck for me until a friend introduced me to The Fat Duck Restaurant in the United Kingdom,” Naim said. “I became fascinated with molecular gastronomy, the science of cooking, multi-sensory cooking and the role that sound, smell, touch and sight play in our dining experience,” Naim said. Working in the world’s best kitchens requires a level of dedication, attention to detail and intention in order to create a memorable experience for diners. Naim used his experiences in the kitchen to become a better chef. “I incorporate much of what I have learned into the recipes I develop at Élevé to provide an outstanding dining experience for our guests. I’ve learned that in the kitchen you can question and challenge everything in respect to food and traditional culinary technique,” he said. After working around the world and traveling with his wife and young child, Naim

was ready to set his roots in New York City and open his own restaurant. One week after opening, the Covid pandemic shut down businesses across the country. But he didn’t let the lapse in work and the extra time on his hands go to waste. “Like many out-of-work chefs and New Yorkers, I had a lot of time to explore fermentation at home with sourdough bread, pickled vegetables, XO sauce and kimchi. “I also had time to watch my son grow up. That was the best part.”

Holy City fine dining

Naim is enjoying eating his way through the growing culinary scene in the city; favorites include tacos at El Molino Supermarket and the brisket at Lewis Barbecue. And while he delves into all things food in the city, he’s also making beautiful dishes of his own at Élevé, where he’s incorporating his world-class fine dining style into the bohoFrench cuisine of the restaurant, like the one bite of scallop, uni and caviar on the menu. As the holiday season gears up, he’s excited about what the restaurant is offering because of the special connection to his own family. “Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we will have holiday specials inspired by the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This is a special menu for me because my wife is Italian, and we prepare this for our family every year.” Naim is excited about what’s to come for himself, the restaurant and culinary industry in Charleston as a whole: “The

Charleston culinary scene is robust and becoming more competitive as a culinary destination every single day. It’s a great place to be for a chef.” Though his travels across the world have taught him the exceptional skill and techniques that have led him here, he’s also applied the rules of the kitchen to his own life: “I’ve learned that success is earned and achievable when you never stop trying; always work smart; come early and leave late; keep going no matter what is going on; and always have goals written down with unwavering focus on your plan and purpose.”

Ma’am Saab launched a new tasting menu this month curated by chef and co-owner Maryam Ghaznavi. The multi-course dinner highlights dishes like Masala Bhel (a puffed rice dish), lamb chapli kabob and butter chicken. The menu is $65 per guest and features more than a dozen dish samples. The minimum party size for the tasting menu is four people, so grab some friends and make a reservation on opentable. com. Ma’am Saab is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Popular local fast casual salad restaurant Verde recently announced a new location in Park Circle, in the building formerly occupied by Abundant Seafood. Verde will also re-open on King Street later this winter. Food & Wine, Southern Living Magazine and Travel + Leisure recently announced a new food festival coming to Charleston in September 2024. Not to be confused with Charleston Wine + Food (although we don’t blame you if you are, in fact, confused), the Food & Wine Classic in Charleston, presented by Explore Charleston, will be held Sept. 27 to Sept. 29. Michael and Caitlin Toscano, owners of Le Farfalle, have opened the doors to their newest project, da Toscano Porchetta Shop, a sandwich shop located in the former spot of Gnome at 109 President St. Unlike its vegan predecessor, the Porchetta Shop features plenty of meats, namely, porchetta, which requires days of preparation and hours of slow roasting. In addition to sandwiches and salads, as well as a variety of take-and-bake items, da Toscano Porchetta Shop will offer housemade baked goods from pastry chef Lindsey DeCocker. —Connelly Hardaway

Coast continues to evolve one year after renovation By Connelly Hardaway At 16 years old, Coast Brewing Co., owned and operated by Jaime Tenny and David Merritt, has seen its fair share of ups and downs in the world of craft beer. From its auspicious beginnings in the mid-aughts, when Tenny successfully led the Pop the Cap campaign to allow high-gravity beers in the state, to a brief 2022 taproom shutdown, the brewery has weathered sea changes in, at times, a fickle industry. You can’t talk about Coast without mentioning its role in the growth of craft beer in South Carolina; that 2007 Pop the Cap campaign changed the way people consumed beer. It was illegal to operate a taproom when Coast opened in 2007. Today its yearold, brand new taproom addition features a walnut countertop bar, a full kitchen and a wraparound porch. While the addition of a Tenny new taproom, built out from the existing brewhouse, is notable, it’s the spot’s new offerings, like a full food and cocktail menu, that have attracted new customers. “Obviously, we do see a good bit of the people who have been supporting us for 16 years, so that’s cool to see,” said Tenny of Coast’s current clientele. “But there’s also people who have stumbled upon us and

said, ‘We had no idea you were here.’ So I’m always surprised at how many people don’t know anything about us. And I think it’s because we were a brewery for so long. And if that’s just not their world, they wouldn’t know we [now] have cocktails.” Coast’s cocktail program is thorough, featuring a rotating list of seasonally inspired bevs (sip on a vintage eggnog this winter) and classics like the Coast Old Fashioned, made with beer barley simple syrup. You can also order wine by the bottle or glass, as well as a variety of non-alcoholic options (Tenny said Coast is fully behind offering high quality N/A drinks) and juice boxes for any kids you may have in tow. All the drinks and dishes are inspired, Tenny added, by things she and her family like to eat and drink. You can keep it light with blistered shishito peppers or get a little more indulgent with a grass-fed burger, fried crispy potatoes or Kolsch-brined chicken wings. Everything is fried in tallow. Coast Brewing Co. now offers a full menu of cocktails and food at its North Charleston taproom oils, and she said that sourcing a pricier fat is worth it. Coast doesn’t plan on tapping out with just new cocktails and food, though. Tenny said she would love to be able to offer more styles of beer and maybe put in a small batch brewing system. And she has another 2024 resolution, one that may be just a tad more difficult: Post more on social media. “How do people know if we have a new dish out? Osmosis?” she joked about Coast’s lack of frequent Instagram updates. “I just expect them to know. So I’m like, I need to rework my approach.”

Redux’s new executive director to focus on outreach, education By Chloe Hogan Redux Contemporary Art Center has finally found its new executive director after an extensive search this summer. Allan Bunch brings a diverse resume to the table: He started his career as a classically trained chef, spending years working in restaurant kitchens, after which he transitioned into front of house management, then worked as a private chef and household manager. His experiences after leaving food and bev include gigs in marketing, branding and franchising. When he and his partner moved from Palo Alto, Calif., to Lawrence, Kan., in 2017, Bunch transitioned into nonprofit work. “I joined this very small nonprofit organization in Lawrence specializing in suicide prevention,” he told the Charleston City Paper. “And we grew that from a $250,000 organization with three full time employees to, when I left, we were about 20 employees and a budget of about $1.5 million. And they’re continuing to grow and flourish.” Originally from Aiken, S.C., Bunch said a couple of cold winters in Kansas is what

pushed him to move “back” to Charleston, where he spent a lot of time growing up. “Charleston still kind of felt like home. I moved back to accept a job at Coastal Community Foundation, and after a couple of years there, I was ready to do something different. I started putting out some feelers. And when I saw this position, it just really excited me.” His husband is an artist, which Bunch said opened up his own appreciation for art. Together, they visited Redux for the first time earlier this year during an open studios event. “After that experience, I just wanted this job so badly,” he said. “The people, the energy of the space — it just felt like where I needed to be.” Bunch is also an amateur artist, but more than that, he said he’s an “art appreciator.” The expertise that Bunch brings to Redux is not in art, he said, but in nonprofit development and finding new paths towards fiscal sustainability. “That’s the way my brain works, and I’m good at it.” The first and foremost goal for Redux, Bunch said, is finding ways to achieve fiscal sustainability. “We can always use more income. There are so many programs that

are ripe for expansion. But as far as those are concerned — I’m one month in — so right now, I’m focused on listening to the community and interpreting and advocating for those voices,” he said. “So when [director of education] Carson Carroll tells me we have this great opportunity for education, we’re going to workshop that, and I’m going to advocate for that. As far as my actual vision goes, I say it’s not mine. As a nonprofit, we are bigger than any one individual or idea, and I think we belong to the community. It’s our responsibility to have the organization be what the community needs it to be.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

Hiss Golden Messenger, led by singer, songwriter and guitarist MC Taylor, released last August its 15th album, Jump For Joy. Catch the band’s set at the Pour House Dec. 30 and Dec. 31. The Durham, N.C., band most often gets lumped into the “folk” genre, but a deep dive into Jump For Joy will disprove that simple word almost immediately. The gentle-but-insistent pulse of the opening track, “20 Years and a Nickel,” sets the tone perfectly. A slippery mid-tempo groove serves as the foundation for glowing guitars, subtle keyboard shading and a dynamic bassline from Alex Bingham. “I saw the new day in the world,” Taylor sings on the next song, buoyed by a deceptively funky backing track and a wave of oddly ominous sax, courtesy of Matt Douglas. There are some traces of acoustic folk on Jump For Joy,” most notably the nostalgic, reflective “My Old Friends,” but even that song ends with a refrain in which the singer says he’s found “something to believe in.” It’s a sound that feels like the polar opposite of Hiss Golden Messenger’s previous album, the more muted, introspective Quietly Blowing It, released in 2021. “I think my mindset was to make a record that felt more outward facing,” Taylor said. “I think I needed to recalibrate the way that I have my emotions on display publicly. I think part of what an artist does is hold a certain type of emotional vulnerability up to the light for people to see. Quietly Blowing It did that in one type of way in a way, and I felt like I needed to go in the other direction because if I continued in the way that I was going, it was going to be diminishing returns.”

Changing course 1809 Reynolds Ave, N. Charleston RebelTaqueria.com for all ticketed shows @Rebeltaqueria #LiveAtRebel

For Taylor, “diminishing returns” doesn’t have anything to do with how well Hiss Golden Messenger’s albums sell. He’s referring more to the experience of making a stripped-down, intimate record just as we began to emerge from a pandemic.

Graham Tolbert

MC Taylor incorporated a more upbeat sound into the band’s new album “I think that Quietly Blowing It has a very solitary internalness that I didn’t think I wanted to go through again, put it that way,” Taylor said. “From the moment of conception, the moment when I started writing the songs, before I even knew what songs would be on the record — I just knew that whatever I was going to do was going to be more effusive. It was going to be wearing joyfulness and hopefulness on its sleeve.” Jump For Joy was recorded over a couple weeks at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, with Taylor’s road band, which includes Bingham on bass, guitarist Chris Boerner, keyboard player Sam Fribush and drummer Nick Falk, with assists from Douglas on sax and a host of backing singers, including Meg Duffy and Aoife O’Donovan. The band members came in ready to record because they’d already played much of Jump For Joy onstage every night. “I think being able to play the music with the people that are going to be on the record lets you wring out the songs,” Taylor said. “There are countless examples of stuff that I thought might be an obvious choice that actually didn’t land the way I thought it would once it was in front of an audience. And there was other stuff that I hadn’t even thought of as being something that would work for an

audience that became much clearer to me once it was brought to the stage.” Taylor was the producer of the album as well, a role he’s played often in the band’s history. “I’m not against producer-artist relationships at all,” he said. “But I think that anyone that is going to step into a producer role with me has to know at least as much as I do about my music and about music in general, which is kind of a tall order. That’s the reason why I often end up in the producer’s chair because it’s a role that feels natural to me. Making a record is really just a series of problem-solving exercises.” As for that pesky “folk” tag people often apply to the band, Taylor looks at that genre as part of a larger sound. “I would say that folk and traditional music are very important parts of the DNA of the music that I make,” he said, “and I will never disavow that because I love that type of music. But there are also a million other things that go into my music. It’s a complex stew of different kinds of music that go into it, and I’m fine with that.” Hiss Golden Messenger performs at the Pour House Dec. 30 and 31. Musician ‘Mookie’ Morant leaves people smiling with new book Songwriter, record producer and musician Jonathan “Mookie” Morant spent more than a decade during his peak professional period on the frontlines of America’s pop music scene. But even while traveling far and wide for his high-profile job obligations, Morant has continuously called Charleston home for the last 40 years. This month, the so-called “Magnum Drummer” will release his much-anticipated debut book of stories and life lessons, The Happy Has Been: A Memoir of Music and Life in 6 Degrees, based on his wild ride thus far. An initial six-city signing tour will accompany the roll out. Morant told the Charleston Morant City Paper he has been rolling down a long and winding musical road for as long as he can remember. “There was never a time that I wasn’t crystal clear on what I’d be doing with my life in one iteration or the other,” he said. “I was a middle son in a musical family, led by my pops, the jazz legend Joey Morant,” he explained. “Naturally, my initial influences were in the jazz

The long waiting list to get a Redux studio space is another challenge Bunch hopes to tackle. “We have a waiting list a mile long. I think that trying to answer the need for more studio space — it’s something that will always live in the back of my mind. What that means with that for the future — I would actually want to see where we could replicate a similar space at some point. I would like to evaluate how far our artists travel to come to Redux. Is there a market for a sister Redux somewhere else?” And as he listens to the needs of the Redux community, a program that comes up again and again, he said, is the scholarship-based Lightning Residency, a six-week program

music community. Among other endeavors, Morant said he maintains low-key residencies at Local’s in Mount Pleasant and Palmetto Brewing Company, and his musicianship is the core component of a recurring music party at King Street Dispensary. This welcome change of pace afforded Morant the opportunity to begin chronicling his one-of-a-kind adventures, insider knowledge and hard-earned wisdom. “After wrestling with the idea of even writing the book at all, I thought of my children being able to walk through the pages of Daddy’s real-life journey, and this became my driving force — to not only write it down, but to deliver my story, with honesty, zest and integrity, so that they could almost see it for themselves.” Even so, laying his life out in book form was surreal, to say the least.

which provides studio space and exhibition opportunities to emerging artists at no cost. “I would like to see if there was a way that we could continue to support our lightning residents after the six weeks are over. And I definitely want to expand our education and outreach. I think that it’s important to be able to show work by historically marginalized communities, and finding new ways to outreach to these different populations, different communities, is highly important.” Just one month into the job, Bunch is open to hearing what needs Redux should respond to: for Charleston artists, especially emerging and under-represented artists, and the downtown community surrounding the space. “This is a very cool place that I wish more people got to experience. Art is this powerful source of healing, expression, coming together. Core to the Redux mission is having a place where everybody can come and feel welcome.” “So many times in the writing process, I had to stop and ask myself, ‘Did this really happen?’ I’m telling you, if not for the fact that I actually lived it, I would not believe my own stories,” Morant said. Given the personal significance of the content, Morant opted to take his time with this project. “It was a slow start. I was basically just working through my notes for the first year plus, and then as I became more comfortable as an author, things intensified, and the next thing you know, three years had passed, and it was time to put it out into the world, come what may.” Now that it’s finally finished, Morant couldn’t be happier about getting The Happy Has Been into people’s hands. “It’s all about sharing my message of happiness and the power of human connection. I always say #leavepeoplesmiling. Share a smile, a moment with others, and watch it multiply.”

Free Will Astrology ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries educator Booker T. Washington advised us, “Do the common thing in an uncommon way.” That’s a useful motto for you in the coming months. If you carry out ordinary activities with flair, you will generate good fortune and attract excellent help. As you attend to details with conscientious enthusiasm, you will access your finest inner resources and exert constructive influences on the world around you. Be thorough and unique, persistent and imaginative, attentive and innovative. Adore your chores in 2024! TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was among the smartest people who ever lived. As is often the case with geniuses, he believed in the supreme value of liberty for all. He was a feminist long before that word existed. Like another genius, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, he thought that “individuality realized is the supreme attainment of the human soul, the master-master’s work of art. Individuality is sacred.” I nominate Mill to be a role model for you in 2024, Taurus. This could be a time when you reach unprecedented new heights and depths of unique self-expression and liberation. PS: Here’s a quote from Mill: “Eccentricity has always abounded where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor and moral courage which it contained.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Emotionally and spiritually, you will ripen at a robust rate in 2024. Your intelligence will mature into wisdom in surprising and gratifying ways. Harvesting rich lessons from long-smoldering confusions and long-simmering mysteries will be your specialty. PS: Some of you Geminis joke around and say you never want to grow up. But I hope you minimize that attitude in the coming months. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Indigenous people study the intelligence of animals and incorporate it into their own lives. If you’re game to do that in 2024, I suggest you choose elephants as a source of teaching and inspiration. Have fun studying and meditating on their ways! Here are a few facts to get you started. Problem-solving is one of their stengths. They are experts at learning how to get what they need and passing that knowledge on to their offspring. They seldom suffer from sickness, but if they do, they often self-medicate with plants in their environment. Elder females are the knowledge keepers, retaining inner maps of where food, drink, and other resources are located. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Writer Janet Champ speaks about the joy of locating “the big wow, the big yesyesyes.” It happens when you find something or someone you regard as “better, greater, cuter, wiser, more wonderful than anything you have ever known.” I’ll be lavish and predict you will encounter a big wow and yesyesyes like this in 2024. Will you know what to do with it? Will you be able to keep it? Those possibilities are less certain, but I have high hopes for you. For best results, cultivate a vivid vision of how the big wow and big yesyesyes will benefit others as well as you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1916, most women in the world could not vote. Many men considered women to be inferior — lacking in courage and initiative. It was the Dark Ages! That summer, two sisters named Augusta and Adeline Van Buren rebelled against the stereotypes by riding their motorcycles across America. Roads were poor, rains were frequent and police arrested them frequently for wearing men’s clothes. Male-dominated media derided them, with one newspaper criticizing their escape from “their proper roles as housewives.” I nominate them to be your role models in 2024, no matter what gender you are. It will be a favorable time to transcend conventional wisdom, override decaying traditions and be a cheerful rebel. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): For hundreds of years, European nations stole land and resources from Indigenous people all over the world. Among the thefts were art, ritual objects, cultural treasures and human skeletons. Museums in the West are

still full of such plunder. But in recent years, some museums have begun to return the loot. Germany sent back hundreds of artifacts to Nigerian museums. France restored many objects to the African country of Benin. Let’s apply this scenario as a useful metaphor for you in 2024, Libra. Is there a part of your past that was hijacked? Your memories appropriated or denied? Your rightful belongings poached, or your authentic feelings infringed upon? It’s time for corrections and healing. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I suggest we choose the brilliant Scorpio physicist and chemist Marie Curie (1867–1934) as your role model in 2024. She is the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different fields. She managed to pursue a rigorous scientific career while raising two children and having a fulfilling marriage. Being of service to humanity was a central life goal. She grew up in poverty and sometimes suffered from depression, but worked hard to become the genius she aspired to be. May the spirit of Marie Curie inspire you, dear Scorpio, as you make dramatic progress in expressing your unique soul’s code. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In my fairy tale about your year ahead, I see you searching for treasure. It’s not a wild and wandering exploration, but a diligent, disciplined quest. You are well-organized about it, carefully gathering research and asking incisive questions. You ruminate on the possibilities with both your logical and intuitive faculties. You meditate on how you might make adjustments in yourself so as to become fully available for the riches you seek. Your gradual, incremental approach gives you strength. You draw inspiration from your sheer persistence and relentless inquiry. And it all pays off by the second half of 2024. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral or fattening,” quipped Capricorn author Alexander Woollcott (1887–1943). Since he was never arrested, I conclude he didn’t get to enjoy some of the activities he relished. Was he immoral? Not exactly, though he could be caustic. Offering his opinion about a famous pianist, he said, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with Oscar Levant that a miracle couldn’t fix.” The good news for you, Capricorn, is that 2024 will be mostly free of the problems Woollcott experienced. You will be offered an abundance of perfectly legal and moral enjoyments. They may sometimes be fattening, but so what? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Author Augusten Burroughs is a devoted urban dweller. He says, “When I get a craving for nature, I turn on TV’s Discovery Channel and watch bear-attack survivors recount their horror.” Martial arts master Morihei Ueshiba had a different perspective. “Mountains, rivers, plants, and trees should be your teachers,” he advised. “Study how water flows in a valley stream, smoothly and freely between the rocks.” I recommend Ueshiba’s approach to you in 2024, Aquarius — not Burroughs’. Here are my predictions: 1. You will have no dangerous encounters with nature. 2. You will learn more than ever from the wild world. 3. To the degree that you wander in the outdoors, your spiritual life will thrive. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A study done at Union College in New York found that being fraternity members raised students’ future income by 36 percent, but lowered their grade point average by 0.25 points. Would you make a similar trade-off, Pisces? Would you pursue a path that made you more successful in one way but less successful in another? I suspect you will encounter unusual decisions like this in 2024. My job is not to advise you what to do, but to make you alert for the provocative riddles. Homework: What activity do you enjoy but rarely engage in? Resolve to do it more in 2024. Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology.com
