Locals looking to AI to solve present, future problems
By Skyler Baldwin
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, seemed to rocket into wide usage overnight. But area experts say it has been moving forward steadily for years before its streak into the spotlight with chatbots last year. But AI can do more than answer funny questions on the internet.
“I think it’s the most powerful tool that mankind has ever seen,” said Doug Hamilton, president of CharlestonHacks and program architect for MUSC’s Human Centered Design Innovation Lab. “But it’s got to be effective for one of the most difficult problems that mankind has — social problems.
“These are very hard to solve, and there are some problems that I think are going to be with us until the end of time,” he added. “But AI can lower the barrier of entry for people who are invested in addressing these things meaningfully.”
That’s where CharlestonHacks comes in. Its themed contests for idea generation and computer programming, known as hack-athons — invite people to come together to solve difficult problems with out-of-the-box thinking. Just last week, from June 24 to June 28, dozens from programmers and tech wizards to college students and newcomers worked to apply AI to a humanitarian cause during Hack Nights.
“This is AI for Good, or AI for Humanity
Hack-a-thon participants have just days to conceptualize, program and present their solutions to common problems
as the general theme,” Hamilton said. “How can AI be used to forward some humanitarian goal?”
How a hack-a-thon works
Participants form teams organically, grouping for like ideas and pulling in people who code, who can speak (the group has to present its project at the end of the event) and visionaries to keep everyone moving forward. Then, the group has only three days to develop an idea, a business, a software or something else that addresses, if not solves, the problem at hand.

Charleston Animal Society nearing a ‘breaking point’
Charleston Animal Society (CAS), which takes in more than 90% of the county’s animals in need, still has close to 1,000 animals in its care.
According to Aldwin Roman, CAS vice-president of operations and strategy, the shelter has 900 animals in its care, and 252 of those are in the building, just above its humane service capacity of about 250.
“We had a lot of dogs and kittens adopted over the weekend,” he said, “and that’s given us a little bit of relief, but we’re still in the critical part of the year. We still have a lot of animals coming in.”
The shelter is asking community members to stop bringing in kittens and to foster or adopt a pet if you can. Anyone who wants to adopt can visit the animal shelter from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Above all, it is a competition. Teams present their product to the other participants and a panel of judges on the final day of the event. Judges score presentations based on a rubric, and the winning team takes home $1,000 cash. Ideas at the AI for Good hack-athon ranged from AI-powered medical analyses to AI-powered public transit incentives.
The winning team, however, developed an AI that could scrub through local menus to help people with dietary restrictions enjoy a night out without spending hours poring over menus.
But in addition to the cash, organization leaders say the real prize is less tangible.
“I think the most important thing about what we’re doing with the hack-a-thons is bringing people together,” said Dave Ingram, co-founder of CharlestonHacks and founder of Querri, an AI-focused startup in Mount Pleasant. “We all want human interaction, and it’s meaningful to come together with a group of people and create something together that didn’t exist before.
“In a world of increasing interaction with technology — in a post-covid world where we all went more remote and more at-home — I think there’s a growing gap for being together and creating.”
While winning teams received a cash prize, it’s not uncommon for ideas devel

Hemp farmers struggle after market collapse
By Jack O’Toole
A South Carolina hemp experiment that began six years ago on a wave of high hopes and big-dollar dreams has come crashing down on the hard realities of collapsing prices and inconsistent government regulations. Frustrated farmers and retail businesses are struggling in the wake.
Official S.C. Department of Agriculture (SCDA) numbers tell the tale. South Carolina experienced a rise from 20 statelicensed hemp farmers during a 2018 pilot program to 265 growersin 2020, followed by a nosedive to just 98 in 2024. And it’s not hard to see why. Hemp prices have fallen from up to $30 a pound to less than $5 a pound over the same period.
“There was a lot of broad interest in hemp farming during the first years of the program, but things have certainly settled down,” SCDA spokesperson Eva Moore told the Charleston City Paper. “The nationwide market for hemp grown for CBD got saturated very quickly, and farmers had to decide whether it made financial sense for them to stay in the business.”
A tough market for farmers
Clemson University agronomist David DeWitt has been a leader in the state’s efforts to make
hemp work as a cash crop from the start. He says the SCDA program has been well-run, but that “market trends” have simply been too much for the industry to overcome.
“We were hoping it would become a real option for farmers as a true on-farm money maker,” he said in an interview. “But it just didn’t evolve to that due to the volume we could grow compared to what the market could stand.”
That supply-anddemand imbalance has been exacerbated by tight regulation on the farm end coupled with a complete lack of regulation on the retail side, he said.
For instance, DeWitt notes, under S.C. law, farmers can only grow hemp containing 0.3% or less of THC, the psychoactive substance in marijuana. But with no specific THC regulation for products like seltzers and gummies, the larger retail market that farmers need hasn’t been able to develop due to uncer-
tainty about what’s legal and what isn’t.
“It can vary from county to county and city to city, as far as when a sheriff or police department will come in and take products off shelves,” DeWitt said. “The retailers just need answers.”
Former state Rep. Chip Limehouse of Charleston has seen the market problems firsthand on his farm in Aiken, where he had 22 acres of hemp under cultivation for several years before finally giving up his license in 2022.
He says that, in addition to the national issues with oversupply and a patchwork of state-by-state regulations, South Carolina got into the hemp business at almost precisely the wrong time, just as the market was peaking.
“We were a little late to the dance with so many other states approving similar measures,” Limehouse said. “And ever since, the market has just continued to go down, down, down, down, down.”
And that’s why the 22 acres he once dedicated to hemp are now producing tomatoes, he said.

Local Olympian waiting to swing into volunteer role

Three-time Olympic hammer thrower
Amber Campbell-Moore of Huger wants to help Lowcountry young women pursue their athletic dreams once she finds an opening in her busy schedule as a mother of three and a social justice advocate.
“I want to run some camps and do athletic readiness and girl empowerment [programs],” said Campbell-Moore, who competed in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 games. Although she didn’t qualify for the finals in her first two Olympic appearances, she didn’t give up.
During the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, when she was 36, Campbell-Moore threw the hammer 72.74 meters (79 yards, two feet), the best ever by an American woman in that event. Although the distance was 2 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) short of a bronze medal, she considers it a win.
At that time, Campbell-Moore was eight years older than the other competitors.
“A lot of women had decided to retire by then. During my career, I saw three generations of different throwers come and go” and she rebuked hints that she too should step aside, said Campbell-Moore, a senior organizer with the Charleston Area
Blotter of the Week
Charleston police on June 23 arrested an apparently drunk West Ashley woman after they found her wandering near a Sam Rittenberg department store wearing only a single sock. Police noticed that a trail of clothes led from the entrance of the store back to the woman, but that she made no attempts to remove the final sock. We know it was hot, but …
Evasive maneuvers
Three-time Olympic hammer thrower Amber Campbell-Moore of Huger stands at a podium on June 23 during a ceremony to induct her and seven other athletes into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in Albuquerque
Justice Ministries (CAJM).
“[It] was disappointing that I didn’t get the bronze, but I was still motivated by the fact that I was happy … healthy, and … I gave it my all. And to place the highest among the American women up until that
point, I felt almost redeemed like I told you I can do this.”
Campbell-Moore grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico, a small community where as a high school athlete she competed in the shot put and discus.
She received a scholarship at Coastal Carolina where she soared as a three-time Big South Athlete of the Year with 16 Big South conference titles.
A chance 2018 meeting at the Target department store in Myrtle Beach connected Campbell-Moore with her future husband, Jamie Moore of Charleston. They were married in December 2020. A year later, they moved from Myrtle Beach to Charleston,
Following the street protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in the spring of 2020, Campbell-Moore said she wanted to get involved in the social justice movement.
When she saw the CAJM job ad, Campbell-Moore said she considered it “a nod from God” that signaled a move to Charleston and working in the social justice arena was the right thing to do.

A North Charleston police officer on July 1 saw a red pickup truck swerving across multiple lanes of Interstate 26 traffic. When the officer got behind the truck, it quickly swerved three lanes right to take an exit ramp. The officer followed, pulled over the truck and arrested the driver for driving while intoxicated. Surprise, surprise.

The Blotter is taken from reports filed with area police departments between June 23 and July 1.
Three James Island children on June 24 reportedly stole a bike from a Folly Road store in what would have been a flawlessly executed plan complete with a lookout and getaway driver — had two of the three not been caught leaving the store. Police returned the stolen bike (and a stolen phone and a stolen wallet) and called the kids’ moms. Probably better punishment. SPONSORED BY
oped at hack-a-thons to be picked up by or sold to larger tech groups or formed into new businesses.
“It is a networking event,” Ingram said. “It’s an opportunity to come together with friends and strangers and make something, and with that comes learning opportunities and networking opportunities.
“We’ve seen several people find jobs through the hack-a-thons,” he added. “People finding friends and future colleagues — there’s a lot of tangential benefits that come from this, but really there’s reward in just being there.”
Powerful tech in your hands
Outside of CharlestonHacks, people are working to bring the power of AI into people’s everyday lives in meaningful ways. Ingram’s 2023 startup, Querri, makes it easier for people who are not data experts to work with hard data.
“It looks like a spreadsheet,” he explained. “You type in what you want your data to do, and we clean, transform, join, analyze, chart and graph that data. A lot of the focus is just doing the things that take people a lot of time in Excel Sheets in a lot less time.
“It’s complicated everywhere to work with data” — even in the largest Fortune
500 companies, he said. “But the opportunity we saw with Querri was now that we have AI, particularly these large language models, we have a very capable translator between human intent and the formulas needed to accomplish those intentions. It turned out to be something that we very suddenly had the technology to solve.”
Hamilton said that’s one of the best elements of AI today — its ease of use and access.
“It’s generally a really powerful tool that everybody has access to,” he said. “You can get a lot of AI platforms for free now, things that never existed before. You can create a new website just using ChatGPT. It’s cool, and it doesn’t take very long or a lot of know-how. And applying it to humanitarian causes is the most obvious use of the most powerful tool we have.”
Ingram added that you don’t have to be a tech wiz or a coding genius to get something out of hack-a-thons. At every event, Charleston Hacks has a cohort of people who have no technical expertise at all.
“It takes more than coders to build a product,” Ingram said.

mulated with all-natural cannabinoids from hemp grown in North Carolina and South Carolina. In addition, the company says its seltzers are independently tested to ensure they are within the .3% limit.
Nevertheless, they’ve had to work overtime to get, and keep, their products on store shelves. They say that was a particular challenge in February of this year, when the now former state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) issued new guidelines that initially appeared to ban most hemp-infused products.
“We wholeheartedly disagreed with that stance,” said Rebel Rabbit co-founder Pierce Wylie. “And with federal and state law on our side, they came back and changed their position to where it did create a path forward for the industry.”
Going forward, Wylie says the big challenge is at the federal level, where he believes Congress should impose uniform national standards for the industry. That way, he notes, big-box retailers like Walmart would be able to carry the products in all 50 states.
“We’re spearheading an initiative to create a beverage-specific coalition to lobby and educate legislators about the benefits we’re offering,” he said. “The goal is to create
a path forward where this can be regulated just like alcohol is regulated.”
Next steps for farmers
According to experts, a better future for hemp in South Carolina will probably require two major changes: a new focus on hemp for industrial uses and the legalization of medical marijuana.
“In the future,” SCDA’s Moore said, “we would like to see the market continue to evolve toward providing more opportunities for growing hemp for fiber.”
Hemp fibers are used in products ranging from auto parts to paper to textiles. Economists say the market for hemp fibers is expected to quadruple in size over the next 10 years.
But just as important, some say, is medical marijuana.
“We need to foster and promote the cannabis industry in South Carolina, including a medical marijuana program in concert with our existing hemp program,” Limehouse said. “I’m a conservative Republican, but relative to medical marijuana, the benefits far outweigh any negatives.”
For the second legislative session in a row, a medical marijuana bill passed the S.C. Senate overwhelmingly but never received a vote in the House. The bill’s sponsor, Beaufort Republican Sen. Tom Davis, has pledged to bring it back next year.
The climate is changing. Face this inconvenient truth.
t’s hotter. It’s wetter. It’s nastier. Weather from South Carolina and across the world seems to be spinning out of control, and there’s one overriding reason: Climate change.
For anyone who maintains there is no such thing as climate change, it’s time to crawl out from under your rock and face the realities of what’s really going on with the weather where you live.
This week in Charleston, for example, the city again implemented its “Active Flooding Intervention Plan,” which is government-ese for “it’s going to rain really hard during the daytime and you don’t want to be on Charleston’s streets so go home early.” More than 30 roads were closed temporarily due to flooding as up to 4 inches of rain fell in two hours.
Such inclement weather brings a commerce slowdown that will keep costing businesses more over time. When it’s a mess outside, people aren’t shopping, tourists aren’t touristing and dollars are staying stuck in pockets.
This week in the Caribbean came the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record as it spit 160 mph winds after pummeling the Windward Islands and was threatening widespread devastation on Jamaica.
And it wasn’t too long ago that people from the Midwest to Northeast got a taste of what Southerners
encounter every summer — bouts of unbearable heat and humidity that threatens life and livelihoods. Their Julys are now coming in June.
Climate deniers aside, there’s no arguing that America has more wildfires, more tornadoes, more heat waves, more unexpected summer and winter storms, and more hail. The list goes on.
Notes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in a recent statement, “Human-caused climate change is warming our ocean globally and in the Atlantic basin, and melting ice on land, leading to sea level rise, which increases the risk of storm surge. Sea level rise represents a clear human influence on the damage potential from a given hurricane.”
Our weather isn’t getting better. If we want to stabilize it, we need to take more proactive measures locally and at the state level to join national and global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote green energy.
Just as colonists in 1776 waged a war for independence from Great Britain, it’s time for everyone to get serious about a war against climate change. It’s been 18 years since Al Gore penned An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It. Maybe now is the time to start listening and acting responsibly.
CHARLESTON CHECKLIST of community
We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:
1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life.
2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.
3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.
4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.
5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.
6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.
7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.
8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.
9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.
10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.
New history dives into importance of S.C. role in Revolution
By Andy Brack
It’s not uncommon for visitors to Charleston to revel in one history when it really might be richer to absorb another.
Too many forget the critical national importance of Charleston and the Carolinas in the colonial effort to become free from Great Britain.
Instead, they want to tour Fort Sumter and see the cannons in White Point Garden that they think bombarded the fort (nope; those cannons didn’t have the range at the time.)
With this time of year being full of Revolutionary War history — South Carolina celebrated the war’s first patriot naval victory over the British on June 28’s Carolina Day and the Declaration of Independence on July 4 — it’s the perfect time for a new look at what happened here from 1776 to 1783. And so enters Virginia historian Alan Pell Crawford whose new book, This Fierce People: The Untold Story of America’s Revolutionary War in the South, came out July 2.
In the 382-page work, Crawford elegantly reminds us of one big thing: Had patriots in the Carolinas not fought in as many battles and pesky skirmishes during that war for independence, the colonists might not have won. In turn that means one thing to all of those tourists who flock in because of the Civil War — it wouldn’t have happened if not for the zeal for liberty by South Carolinians like Christopher Gadsden, Henry Laurens and his son John, Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter and William Moultrie.
Most people, Crawford incisively writes, think of the War for Independence as something that Virginian George Washington waged and won in the Northeast.
Part of the reason the South’s crucial role in the Revolutionary War has been glossed over may be because of the Civil War and slavery.
“The problem is that much of the war took place not in the North but in the South, and that is where the most decisive battles — those that forced the British surrender at Yorktown — were fought,” he writes. Key battles were here at Camden, Kings Mountain, Cowpens and Eutaw Springs, just an hour away from Charleston. The British also spent precious time and resources fighting to seize Charleston, the second richest colonial city during the time of the war. All of this stretched supply lines and diverted British attention, often giving Washington’s northern troops time to rest, recover and resupply.
Part of the reason the South’s crucial role in the Revolutionary War has been glossed over may be because of the Civil War and slavery.
“Even in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, historians were understandably reluctant to honor southerners who contributed so much to the War of Independence, knowing as they did the direct line from [Revolutionary War General] Henry Lee III, for example, to [Civil War General] Robert E. Lee.”
Nevertheless, Crawford’s objective discussion of the South’s role in the Revolutionary War makes for compelling reading. He tells the stories of events through captivating profiles of people like Marion, the hawknosed leader who essentially invented guerilla warfare in South Carolina’s swamps. Or the moving and ultimately sad tale of John Laurens, the energetic leader, aide to Washington, buddy of Alexander Hamilton and son of the only man long held during the war in the Tower of London. John Laurens died late in the war — in August 1782 — after an impetuous skirmish with a large British foraging party along the Combahee River about an hour south of Charleston today.
Crawford’s book gets its title from a speech made in 1775 by British statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke, who said of the colonists: “We cannot, I fear, falsify the pedigree of this fierce people, and persuade them that they are not sprung from a nation in whose veins the blood of freedom circulates.”
So this year as you celebrate freedom, watch fireworks and think about what’s happening to this country 248 years later, recall the passion of colonists who risked their lives for an ideal — independence from a king — so they could become a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Our picks for crafting the perfect 24 hours
City Paper staff
Visitors and residents often ask what they should do with free time in Charleston and the surrounding area. But with so many possibilities, it’s often difficult to pick out just one or two experiences.
So we thought we’d take a nod from travel publications that occasionally offer a select list of a few things to do in a day or day and a half — but with a twist. Our staff came up with too many cool things to do for just one list … so we combined them in “What to do” by area — and occasionally offered alternatives for some of the same times. Regardless, you will be able to mix and match to craft a great day in one part of the area or all over.
If we’ve missed your favorites, share with us on social media so everyone can know.

Summerville’s Wood’s Ace Hardware has helpful local beer garden Hops
By Connelly Hardaway
Ace may be the place with the helpful hardware folks, but it’s not every Ace Hardware store that features its own beer garden. Wood’s Ace Hardware, owned by Emily Wood Popielarz, is setting the bar high for weekend home improvement excursions with its addition of Bolts & Brews, a beer garden located within and behind the hardware store. The spot opened at the end of 2023 and Popielarz said the Summerville community has been buzzing ever since. “It was really exciting to be able to show it to the community,
and it was extremely well-received,” she said.
Popielarz said that she’d been considering adding something like Bolts & Brews to her Ace location for a while now. “As a mom of three, there was really no place in Summerville that I felt I could take my kids and hang out with friends,” Popielarz said.
Cheers to beers, wine and more

which is exactly what it sounds like: Kids play with legos, and parents drink lagers (or whatever suits their fancy). The spot frequently hosts live music, food trucks and trivia nights, too.
The beer garden serves wine and beer (as many local options as possible, of course), and soon, a slushie machine will crank out frosé. Popielarz said that she hopes to start collaborating with local breweries, too.

Cuisine
Try big, bold Asian flavors at new restaurant Makan
By Connelly Hardaway
Chef James Wozniuk can’t get enough stink beans. You’ll find the bitter, nutty bean in Southeast Asia, where it grows on trees and, with its high concentration of amino acids, puts off a smell reminiscent of methane gas. And you can bet you’ll find it in Wozniuk’s new Rutledge Avenue restaurant, Makan, in the Sambal Udang Petai, a shrimp dish that Wozniuk fondly refers to as “funky and spicy.” Those big, bold flavors are representative of the Malaysian cuisine Wozniuk is dishing out at Makan. The restaurant pays homage to the cuisine of Southeast Asia, an area that Wozniuk has traveled frequently. His love for the cuisine inspired him to open the original Makan location, in D.C., in 2020. Family ties led him to open Makan Charleston. “I grew up in Greenville,” said Wozniuk. “My sister went to MUSC, I have lots of friends here and my brother and his wife are down here. … They just had a baby, so [I wanted to be] closer to family and be closer to my niece to watch her grow up. It was a pretty easy decision.”
And while D.C. and Charleston are arguably vastly different cities, Wozniuk said that he was sure that the Lowcountry was ready for his Malaysian cuisine. He mentioned local restaurants like Xiao Bao, Beautiful South and King BBQ as spots that have paved the way for Asian cuisine in the Charleston area.
“There were a lot of people building the scene up with that style of food before us,” he said. “It gave us a little confidence boost knowing that people were definitely into it.”
Sip, share, savor
The Makan menu is divided into four approachable sections — kecil (smalls), mee (noodles), utama (mains) and kuih (dessert). Wozniuk said the menu will change seasonally and, hopefully, based on inspiration from his travels.
“In a perfect world, I go to Malaysia once a year,” he said, adding that he’ll visit the country for two to three weeks to see new dishes, “tighten all the flavors up” and “eat through everything.”
“This last trip, I went to three new cities. The amount of food that I ate through was very exciting,” he said. And while he’s looking forward to recreating those dishes, he’s trying to take things one step at a time and get his staff used to the current menu
What’s new
The Select , an Atlanta-based eatery, opened its second location on Meeting Street July 5. Located at 465 Meeting St. in the Greystar building, The Select will serve “new American cuisine with the traditional flavors of the Lowcountry” with menu items like French onion soup, lobster arancini, miso tilefish and steak frites. The Select is inspired by Paris’ Le Select, a 1920s brasserie known as a meeting place for literary expats like Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. The restaurant will be open for dinner nightly and, eventually, for brunch service. Learn more online at theselectcharleston.com.
before switching things up again.
He said that in general, customers are eager to learn about the menu, too. He and his team can guide diners through dishes that may be more approachable if they’re new to Southeast Asian cuisine.
“Depending on how adventurous they’re feeling, I’d definitely start off with the satay,” Wozniuk recommended. Guests can choose from chicken or paneer (fresh cow’s milk cheese) satay, served with peanut sauce, cucumber and shallot.
Wozniuk said that the Ikan Asam Pedas, a fish curry with sour and spicy broth, okra and tomato reminds him a lot of the South. “People are likening it to a gumbo,” he said.
He said that the Rendang Daging, a dry beef curry served with coconut, lemongrass, nutmeg and lime leaf is “a staple.” “You’ll see it globally on top dishes around the world. … It’s dry in the sense that it doesn’t have a sauce or a gravy like a normal curry, it’s just a bit tighter, and all that flavor is cooked into the meat.”
Wozniuk has perfected his cuisine over the years and Makan D.C.’s accolades, including two Michelin Guide Bib Gourmands, speak to his success. A great deal of that success could be the result of experiencing Malaysian cuisine first hand.
“I have a lot of Malaysian cookbooks, but a lot of the food that you actually see when you’re there [in Malaysia], doesn’t make it into the cookbooks,” he said. “It’s just figuring out, ‘What is this? How did you do it?’ And that’s what I love.”
Vicious Biscuit introduces a special summer menu, available now through Aug. 31. Featured items include biscuits like the Caribbean Cordon Bleu, made with smoked ham, melted white cheddar cheese, grilled chicken and pineapple salsa and drinks like the strawberry vodka lemonade and tropical pineapple mimosa. The seasonally inspired lunch menu will be an extension of Frannie’s usual offerings, with a selection of salads, sandwiches, sides and woodfired pizzas. Puppets rock out in Cthulhu: The Musical!
By Ryan Biddix
Get ready to be astounded by an obscure combination of monstrous octopi, whimsical puppets and pulsating rock ’n’ roll. On July 7, Cthulhu: The Musical!, the product of the Oregon-based troupe Puppeteers for Fears, (PFF) promises a theatrical experience different from any other: think Lovecraftian horror merged with quirky musical comedy.
Known for their ingenious way of puppeteering and a penchant for twisted tales turned upside down, PFF brings to life H.P. Lovecraft’s truly creepy narrative, The Call of Cthulhu, in the most unexpected format — musical comedy. The Call of Cthulhu tells an ancient tale of malevolent entities lurking on the floor of the ocean, haunting the dreams of humans with unsettling visions. PFF somehow manages to inject their trademark irreverence and wit into this spine-tingling narrative.
In an interview with the Charleston City Paper, PFF’s artistic director and playwright Josh Gross explored the creative process behind his puppeteering troupe and the challenges of adapting classic horror into comedy. Gross grew up playing in bands before later exploring his passion for playwriting in college. The idea of blending these two passions had always intrigued him, however, he struggled with the authenticity of musical theater, Gross explained.
“I had trouble taking musicals seriously, as spontaneously breaking into song and dance rarely feels genuine onstage,” he said. This all changed when he was presented with the opportunity to write a short, Halloween-themed puppet show for a theater company based in Boise, Idaho. As time progressed, these shows gained traction and naturally, led to the creation of PFF.
“I started plotting out different monsters or themes or ‘seasons’ we could do shows based around, especially as features instead of shorts,” Gross said.
Unexpected inspiration
The inspiration for Cthulhu: The Musical! came from an unconventional source, Gross
brings its original show, Cthulhu: the Musical!, to the Music Farm July 7
said — a joking experiment in informal market testing. “As a joke, I started adding the words ‘the musical’ to things to see how people would react,” he recalled. The whimsy turned serious when a casual mention of Cthulhu: The Musical! in a public setting unexpectedly garnered interest.
“Caught a bit off-guard, I said, ‘Here, in the fall. Look for posters,’ ” Gross recounted.
The defining moment arrived when Gross’ significant other playfully challenged him to bring the idea to fruition. “Well, now you have to write it,” she remarked, encouraging Gross to tackle the daunting task of adapting Lovecraft’s elusive work.
“It had been a joke initially, because we were talking about how Lovecraft is so resistant to adaptation, and that it would be a real challenge,” Gross reflected. But despite the initial skepticism, the project blossomed, offering unexpected opportunities and becoming a resounding success.
Humor in horror
Turning such a dark and unsettling story into a musical comedy made more sense than you might expect, Gross said. “In a weird way, horror — especially Lovecraftian psychological horror — and comedy are two sides of the same coin,” he mused. “Both involve turning something sideways and seeing it in a new way.”
This perspective allowed them to find humor in horror, leveraging what Gross called Lovecraft’s “penchant for hyperbole”

Step into a murder mystery
to create absurd yet compelling narratives. Musically, Gross emphasized the thematic integration of “madness” into the score. This approach not only enhances the storytelling but also reinforces the eerie atmosphere of Lovecraft’s works.
“I wanted to highlight the themes of the story in the score, and since the story is about madness, the most key decision there was to include a repeating musical theme intended to get stuck in your head, as that’s a sure path to madness,” he noted.
As PFF prepares to wrap up the last part of its national tour of Cthulhu, Gross expressed excitement about bringing this fusion of genres to new audiences.
“We have been dreaming of a full national tour for a long time,” he said. “It’s super cool to be playing venues where so many bands and comedians we love have played or are actively booked to play. It helps with the imposter syndrome of doing something as outside the box as touring in a rock-and-roll puppet show.”
Don’t miss your chance to witness this one-of-a-kind production at the Music Farm on July 7. Whether you’re a Lovecraft fan, horror fanatic or simply curious about the intersection of genres, Cthulhu: The Musical! offers an evening of entertainment that defies expectations and embraces the absurdity lurking beneath the surface of even the darkest tales.

In the first week of June, local indie-pop ensemble Wilmot celebrated the release of its debut single, “Oh, Boy,” a catchy number about transcending childhood and trying to stay in touch with the significant figures in one’s life.
When not hunkered down in the studio, this up-and-coming Lowcountry band featuring Matt Vajdic (guitar/lead vocals), Connor Sage (bass) and Jake Wastler (drums/vocals) can also frequently be found holding court at The Royal American.
While the recent bit of news is exciting, Vajdic told the Charleston City Paper that his musical journey actually began long ago and far away.
“I grew up in a quiet town in the suburbs of Chicago, a little under an hour north of the city,” he said.
There, Vajdic was exposed to an eclectic mix of styles by his “U2-loving” father and his “classical-leaning” mother. Vajdic started taking piano lessons at a young age, but that encounter didn’t pique his interest.
“Throughout childhood, I kept trying different instruments until I found one that stuck — saxophone at the time — and ended up being in the high school band all four years,” Vajdic recalled. “I think that phase, of wanting to try every instrument I could, plays a role in my songwriting these days, in that I am able to look to different instruments to spark an idea or motive.”
In college, Vajdic dove a little deeper into indie music exploring artists like Mac Demarco, Tallest Man on Earth and Beach House. Importantly, he also picked up a guitar and tried his hand at singing. These events seem to have placed him firmly on the path.
“Around the same time, I remember the band Glass Animals saying that they used this Digital Audio Workstation thing called Ableton, so I downloaded the free version out of curiosity,” he said. “The ability to
Local group Wilmot combines buttery guitar riffs, warm synths and catchy vocals in its new single “Oh, Boy”
fully craft an arrangement enthralled me. The first few years of having it I’d create silly little beats and hundreds of unfinished songs and ideas.”
Not wanting to go it alone, Vajdic eventually recruited Sage and Wastler (whom he’d already met in various places around Charleston) to help expand upon his vision.
“I was starting this project called Wilmot, and our first show was actually just Jake and myself, but we immediately recognized the need for live bass, so Connor jumped right on board,” Vajdic said.
‘Dream pop’ in the Holy City
While acknowledging that the area already had a fantastic music scene, Vajdic said he hopes that Wimot is inserting something noteworthy into the local scene with its first single and he backlog of other tunes they’re planning to record in the near future.
“We decided to put out ‘Oh, Boy’ first because we thought it fully encapsulated our sound and gave the listeners a good reference of what’s to come,” he said. “I like to think we’re introducing the Holy City to dream-pop.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The “nirvana fallacy” is the belief that because something is less than utterly perfect, it is gravely defective or even irredeemably broken. Wikipedia says, “The nirvana fallacy compares actual things with unrealistic, idealized alternatives.” Most of us are susceptible to this flawed approach to dealing with the messiness of human existence. But it’s especially important that you avoid such thinking in the coming weeks. To inspire you to find excellence and value in the midst of untidy jumbles and rumpled complexities, I recommend you have fun with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. It prizes and praises the soulful beauty found in things that are irregular, incomplete and imperfect.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are coming to a fork in the road — a crux where two paths diverge. What should you do? Author Marie Forleo says, “When it comes to forks in the road, your heart always knows the answer, not your mind.” Here’s my corollary: Choose the path that will best nourish your soul’s desires. Now here’s your homework, Taurus: Contact your Future Self in a dream or meditation and ask that beautiful genius to provide you with a message and a sign. Plus, invite them to give you a wink with either the left eye or right eye.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Last year, you sent out a clear message to life requesting help and support. It didn’t get the response you wished for. You felt sad. But now I have good news. One or both of the following may soon occur. 1. Your original message will finally lead to a response that buoys your soul. 2. You will send out a new message similar to the one in 2023, and this time you will get a response that makes you feel helped and supported. Maybe you didn’t want to have to be so patient, Gemini, but I’m glad you refused to give up hope.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): The Fates have authorized me to authorize you to be bold and spunky. You have permission to initiate gutsy experiments and to dare challenging feats. Luck and grace will be on your side as you consider adventures you’ve long wished you had the nerve to entertain. Don’t do anything risky or foolish, of course. Avoid acting like you’re entitled to grab rewards you have not yet earned. But don’t be selfconsciously cautious or timid, either. Proceed as if help and resources will arrive through the magic of your audacity. Assume you will be able to summon more confidence than usual.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): All of us, including me, have aspects of our lives that are stale or unkempt, even decaying. What would you say is the most worn-out thing about you? Are there parts of your psyche or environment that would benefit from a surge of clean-up and revival? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to attend to these matters. You are likely to attract extra help and inspiration as you make your world brighter and livelier. The first rule of the purgation and rejuvenation process: Have fun!
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): On those rare occasions when I buy furniture from online stores, I try hard to find sources that will send me the stuff already assembled. I hate spending the time to put together jumbles of wood and metal. More importantly, I am inept at doing so. In alignment with astrological omens, I recommend you take my approach in regard to every situation in your life during the coming weeks. Your operative metaphor should be this: Whatever you want or need, get it already fully assembled.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When Adragon De Mello was born under the sign of Libra in 1976, his father had big plans for him. Dad wanted him to get a Ph.D. in physics by age 12, garner a Nobel Prize by 16, get elected President of the United States by 26, and then become head of a world government by 30. I’d love for you to fantasize about big, unruly dreams like that in the coming weeks — although with less egotism and more amusement and adventurousness. Give yourself a license to
play with amazing scenarios that inspire you to enlarge your understanding of your own destiny. Provide your future with a dose of healing wildness.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Your horoscopes are too complicated,” a reader named Estelle wrote to me recently. “You give us too many ideas. Your language is too fancy. I just want simple advice in plain words.” I wrote back to tell her that if I did what she asked, I wouldn’t be myself. “Plenty of other astrologers out there can meet your needs,” I concluded. As for you, dear Scorpio, I think you will especially benefit from influences like me in the coming weeks — people who appreciate nuance and subtlety, who love the poetry of life, who eschew clichés and conventional wisdom, who can nurture your rich, spicy, complicated soul.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The coming weeks will be prime time for you to re-imagine the history of your destiny. How might you do that? In your imagination, revisit important events from the past and reinterpret them using the new wisdom you’ve gained since they happened. If possible, perform any atonement, adjustment or intervention that will transform the meaning of what happened once upon a time. Give the story of your life a fresh title. Rename the chapters. Look at old photos and videos and describe to yourself what you know now about those people and situations that you didn’t know back then. Are there key events from the old days that you have repressed or ignored? Raise them up into the light of consciousness.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In 1972, before the internet existed, Capricorn actor Anthony Hopkins spent a day visiting London bookstores in search of a certain tome: The Girl from Petrovka. Unable to locate a copy, he decided to head home. On the way, he sat on a random bench, where he found the original manuscript of The Girl of Petrovka. It had been stolen from the book’s author George Feifer and abandoned there by the thief. I predict an almost equally unlikely or roundabout discovery or revelation for you in the coming days. Prediction: You may not unearth what you’re looking for in an obvious place, but you will ultimately unearth it.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarius-born Desmond Doss (1919–2006) joined the American army at the beginning of World War II. But because of his religious beliefs, he refused to use weapons. He became a medic who accompanied troops to Guam and the Philippines. During the next few years, he won three medals of honor, which are usually given solely to armed combatants. His bravest act came in 1944, when he saved the lives of 70 wounded soldiers during a battle. I propose we make him your inspirational role model for the coming weeks, Aquarius. In his spirit, I invite you to blend valor and peace-making. Synergize compassion and fierce courage. Mix a knack for poise and healing with a quest for adventure.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What types of people are you most attracted to, Pisces? Not just those you find most romantically and sexually appealing but also those with whom a vibrant alliance is most gracefully created. And those you’re inclined to seek out for collaborative work and play. This knowledge is valuable information to have; it helps you gravitate toward relationships that are healthy for you. Now and then, though, it’s wise to experiment with connections and influences that aren’t obviously natural — to move outside your usual set of expectations and engage with characters you can’t immediately categorize. I suspect the coming weeks will be one of those times.
Homework: Who is the most important person or animal in your life? I invite you to give them a surprising gift. Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology.com
