2016 Talent
75 AGC Scholarships Awarded In May, the Charleston Metro Chamber awarded 75 students from across the region with scholarships to Trident Technical College to pursue careers in one of our region’s high demand industries, fueling our talent pipeline. Scholarship recipients were selected from applications received from students throughout the region who are graduates of a Career Academy in one of four industry clusters: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math); Business and IT; Culinary/Hospitality; and Health Sciences. The scholarships are funded through the Chamber’s Accelerate Greater Charleston (AGC) campaign, an investment strategy launched in 2012 to accelerate regional progress. AGC provides optimal assets in Talent and Advocacy initiatives to support growth in a highly competitive, global race for success. The Chamber’s scholarships bring opportunity for both the student and the student’s family. With 73 percent of the recipients being the first in their family to obtain a college degree, the scholarship is breaking a cycle and allowing kids to pursue a better life regardless of previous obstacles.
10
“ All my life I was told success isn’t for us, it is only for the rich and the wealthy people. I have kept this stuck in my head throughout my whole life… I am very thankful that I am getting an opportunity to be going to college with a scholarship. I’ll prove everyone who doubted me wrong, so I can proceed with my goal of becoming a civil engineer.” Benito Hernandez, Stall High School 2016 AGC Scholarship recipient
The first AGC Scholarships were awarded in 2014 to 12 students and in just two years, the number of scholarships awarded has grown by 525 percent. In total, 102 scholarships have been awarded, representing an investment of more than $300,000 into our region’s talent pipeline.

2016 Legislation And advocacy
State House Guide Do you remember how a bill becomes a law?
The Charleston Metro Chamber’s State House Guide, filled with information on the South Carolina Legislature in an easy to view and read format, came to life after a suggestion that took us back to our school days. Mark Lattanzio, Region President of SunTrust Bank and Chamber Chairman-Elect, raised the question – how many people really know how the legislature works and how a bill becomes a law?
“ The issues being considered at the State House significantly impact everyone in sustaining quality economic growth. Demystifying the vernacular and process of moving legislation is more critical than ever as citizens of the region assess where various legislative issues stand.” Mark Lattanzio, SunTrust Bank 2018 Chamber Chairman-Elect
12
Mark is right. As we communicate weekly on advocacy and legislative updates, members can refer to the State House Guide to clarify the process and get questions answered. The guide includes facts, a pictorial on how a bill advances from idea to law, a list of standing committees in the South Carolina House and Senate and a glossary of terms. It’s easy to read, understand and refer to when hearing about legislative action (and inaction) that affects business in our state and our region. The Charleston Metro Chamber’s work in advocacy and government relations is critical to ensure support for business creation, growth and sustainability. The State House Guide is one of several new resources introduced in 2016 to assist members in their advocacy partnership, support and knowledge. View or download the State House Guide at charlestonchamber.net/statehouseguide.
Fact sheets and issue papers, including Infrastructure Funding Realities and Regulation of Single Use Plastic Bags, created by the Chamber provide members with the facts behind the headlines on issues making news throughout the region and state. Completion and Launch of One Region Strategy Global Competitiveness Strategy Elevates Economic Development and Collaboration. The completion and launch of the One Region Global Competitiveness Strategy represents an exciting time for metro Charleston’s next five years. Developed with hundreds of community stakeholders, One Region takes traditional economic development to new heights. The One Region vision is to act as a unified region to be a globally competitive place where people and businesses flourish. To achieve that vision, the strategy is designed as a broad and inclusive approach and is built upon four regional values:
OUR REGION... V ALUES A STRONG, RESILIENT ECONOMY. VALUES ATTAINABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL RESIDENTS TO LIVE, LEARN AND EARN. V ALUES BALANCING GROWTH WITH NURTURING OUR UNIQUE CHARACTER. V ALUES BEING A CONNECTED COMMUNITY.
One Region ensures that we work as one, aligning our progress to guide the region’s economic, workforce and community development efforts across the three-county region. Strategy development, which began in late 2015, was completed in May 2016 and presented to the community. Stakeholders and task force members then got to work – developing activation plans, recruiting participants and formalizing Year One priorities. 2016 Leadership
CYP Celebrates 10 Years In 2006, a group of young leaders created Charleston Young Professionals (CYP), an initiative of the Charleston Metro Chamber dedicated to assisting Chamber members and professionals throughout the region with their leadership, professional and personal development, and community engagement. A decade later, CYP’s membership and programming is bringing millennials and others the information and connections most important to them. In August, CYP celebrated a decade of leadership at an event that drew members old and new, along with business leaders who have experienced the benefit of CYP participation in their organizations. CYP leaders past and present spoke of their involvement and why Charleston Young Professionals is a powerful resource for the entire region.
2016 CYP Chairman and current member of the Chamber Board of Directors and Executive Committee, Lauren Newman, reiterated the importance of Young Professional’s involvement in all regional development efforts.
“ Charleston has a wealth of young professional talent. Keeping them engaged, entrenching them in their communities and ensuring they have quality-of-place assets, such as affordable housing, transportation infrastructure and convenient work centers, is critical for our future. I’m proud to say that CYP members are working on these important issues.” Lauren Newman, Carolina One Real Estate 2016 CYP Chairman
In 2017, members will see additional programs and connection opportunities to expand involvement and increase engagement. Members of the Charleston Metro Chamber can join CYP at no additional charge. Learn more about this dynamic organization at Charleston-YP.com. 16
