MICHEL Calvet is a painter who views his work like a musician views an improvisation: spontaneous, passionate, raw. Using the alla prima technique in his pieces, he creates paintings with texture and movement and a sense of boldness born directly from an inspired response to a moment, a scene, a feeling. “I love the freedom to express and create that art provides,” says Calvet, who lives in Montferrand, France.

Using oil and acrylic, depending on the subject, Calvet creates paintings in styles that run the gamut, including expressive, figurative, borderline abstract and colorist. In his former life, Calvet was a musician from the age of 25, so there’s little wonder that one of his favorite subjects to paint are musicians. He also loves reinterpreting scenes of everyday life and cultural activities and conveying those moments onto the canvas in a way that is, as the artist says, musical and rhythmic. “My work evokes emotion that is happy and sometimes sad. The expressive movement observed and color used all combine to convey feeling and inspire a reaction in the viewer,” Calvet says.
