KATHARINE FLANDERS
WHILE there is no distinct imagery in Katharine Flanders’ work, her abstract pieces evoke an impression of something— some scene or picture that seems just out of reach of your mind’s eye. As she uses the “magical mud” of acrylic paints on canvas, she takes inspiration from her surroundings, painting the ocean and sky with strokes that are intentional in their lack of form.

One in a long line of women on her mother’s side whose hands were forever in paint or clay, Flanders was destined to be artistic. As a child, she drew and painted—a passion that continued until she turned 18. It wasn’t until more than 40 years later, upon discovering acrylic flow painting, that Flanders returned to her love of painting. In 2021, she dedicated herself to being a professional artist, previously having held an administrative position in the family dental practice. “I love creating something beautiful,” says Flanders, who works from her home studio in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
Flanders is a member of the Waccamaw Neck Arts Alliance and the Seacoast Artists Guild. Her work can be found on display at various art shows, and she regularly donates pieces to the Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum for use in its fundraisers.
