A Moment with Bob

If you have an estate plan, remember to review it and have it updated if needed.

Question: We recently moved to Georgia and are wondering if the will, trust, financial power of attorney and health care advanced directives we prepared in another state are valid here?

Answer: Welcome to the Peach State! It sounds like you have a good foundation. However, significant life events, e.g. relocation to a different state, marriage, divorce, birth of a child or grandchild, diagnosis with a chronic health condition, or a death in the family, could necessitate changes to your plan. It’s important to regularly review your plan so you can be sure it continues to meet your needs. You should review whether your estate planning documents, title (ownership) of assets, and beneficiary designations are coordinated to allow your assets to be distributed to who you want; when you want; the way you want.

Experiencing a significant life event is also a good time to review your “fiduciaries” – trusted persons you have named as “agent”, “executor”, “guardian” for minor children, and “trustee” to ensure the persons you selected are still willing and able to serve when needed.

I recommend scheduling a “Discovery Meeting” with my firm to review your plan so you can have peace of mind knowing it still reflects your wishes.
