Easter most likely got its name from the Goddess of Spring called Eostre who some people worshipped long before Jesus was born. At that time it was thought that the sun died in winter and was born again in spring when days would lengthen and the sun’s power would return. In Europe, Eostre was honoured as the bringer of spring.
GOOD FRIDAY On Good Friday Christians remember the day that Jesus was killed on the cross. This is the reason why the cross is an important sign for Christians today. At Easter people eat hot cross buns which have a cross shape on the top. Good Friday is a sad day and churches never have flowers or decorations on this day. The church is left dark and there is just a simple cross on the altar. It is known as Good Friday because Christians believe that Jesus gave up his life for the good of everyone.
EASTER DAY Easter Day is always on a Sunday, but the date varies from year to year unlike Christmas. Many years ago Christians decided that Easter Day should always be on the Sunday following the first full moon after the first day of Spring on 21st March. This means that Easter can be as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. Easter Sunday is a happy day for Christians who believe that Jesus rose from he dead on this day. They believe that Jesus’ resurrection or coming alive shows that death is not the end of everything. Many go to church to thank God for Jesus life. Church bells are rung and churches are decorated with flowers.
There are many customs associated with Easter Day which involve eggs. The custom of giving children chocolate eggs has been popular in Britain while in Europe and America parents hide chocolate eggs in the garden for children to find. In many countries children are given hard boiled eggs and it is also a custom for children to decorate these by painting or dyeing them in bright colours. Eggs were always thought to be special even before Jesus was born. It is because they are associated with new life when the chick breaks from the egg, so eggs have always been part of celebrations at Easter. The Easter Bunny is also not a modern invention. Rabbits have been associated with springtime since ancient times. It is believed that a symbol of the Goddess of Spring Eostre was the hare. It was Eostre’s sacred animal since it was a symbol of fertility and the rebirth of nature following winter. As rabbits are similar to hares and are very common everywhere, Christians changed the symbol to the Easter bunny. The tradition of the Easter bunny leaving a basket of treats such as Easter eggs and chocolates on Easter Day is common in America but not in Britain. The idea of an egg-laying rabbit went to America in the 1700’s through immigrants arriving from Germany.
The most expensive non-jewelled chocolate egg ever sold at auction according to the Guinness World Record has been made by chocolatier William Curley. The egg sold for more than $10,000 to investor Cyrus Vandrevala. For the cost of this one egg you could purchase approximately 10,000 Cadbury crème eggs. The most expensive egg was crafted at Curley’s Twickenham production kitchen and it took seven skilled chocolate’s three days to handcraft the massive egg using Amadei chocolate from Venezuela. This is considered to be the best chocolate in the world.
The egg is filled with muscovado caramel, Japanese black vinegar, rosemary and olive oil, toasted sesame and juniper berry and cassis. The egg is accented with edible gold leaf. The egg – christened the Golden Speckled Egg – was auctioned as part of the Faberge Big Egg Hunt which raises money for charities Action for Children and Elephant Family. More than 200 eggs all created by leading artists & designers have been hidden all over London. Egg hunter’s text a code on to a plaque next to each egg to register their finds. London hopes the Big Egg Hunt will be judged the largest Easter egg hunt in the world.

As soon as you remove the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.
CRAYON EASTER EGGS YOU WILL NEED: Crayons Boiled eggs Neon food colouring and white vinegar HOW TO MAKE THEM: Be sure that boiled eggs are cool and dry. Use crayons to draw designs on the egg. Have children hold the egg gently so that they do not crack the shell. Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in to a mug of water (filled 他 full) then add several drops of food colouring. La Palma is the fifth largest of the seven main Canary Islands. On La Palma there is so much to see in a small area. Many people believe La Palma is the most beautiful Canary island, unspoilt and ideal for rest, peace and quiet, walking & hiking. Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of the island and the island’s main port and is a beautiful city with many elegant historic houses and churches. The main shopping street is narrow, cobbled and traffic free. Santa Cruz de La Palma produces high quality handmade cigars made from locally grown tobacco. In Santa Cruz de La Palma you can discover the most representative dishes of the island’s gastronomy from wrinkled potatoes with sauce to Canary stew which can be washed down with wine from La Palma. Los Llanos is the largest and busiest town on the west side of La Palma. Plaza de España is the hub of the town and a good place to have a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. There are several supermarkets, shops and a cinema.
The Plaza de Espaùa house some of the most important buildings on the island including the Town Hall with its façade showing a relief image of the monarch Phillip II. Inside are excellent displays of coffered ceilings and fresco paintings. Puerto Naos is one of the two tourist villages on the west coast of La Palma. The sea front apartments are mostly privately owned and are for private use or rental. There is a wide range of restaurants and bars, tourist shops and two supermarkets. Puerto Naos has an excellent black sand beach and enjoys good temperatures all year round. There is a good choice of hotels both in the city and in the rest of the island and the residents of La Palma, like the rest of the Canary Islanders are always pleasant.
La Palma, like the other Canary Islands is a volcanic ocean island. The volcano is the site of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, one of the world’s premier astronomical observatories. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Bananas are grown throughout the island with many banana farms on the western side of the island. Other crops include Bird of Paradise flowers, oranges, avocados and grapes. The wine from the grapes, grown in the volcanic soil, is highly prized. To the south of the island Volcan San Antonio and Volcan Teneguia are both situated in the Fuencaliente area. A trail leads from the visitor centre just outside the town and continues all the way down to the lighthouse offering a vast array of scenery along the way. To the north of the island lies the largest known crater and National Park of the Caldera de Taburiente. Walking within the caldera is considered to be one of the best possible walks on the island.

Spain has always been famous for its bull-fights known as the Fiesta Nacional (The national sport). The origins of bull fighting date back to 711AD when the first bullfight (corrida) took place in honour of the crowning of King Alfons VIII. Every week thousands of Spaniards flock to the nearest bullring, but not all Spaniards agree with the sport. Bullfighting has now been banned in Catalonia and other regions will likely follow this ban. It is reported that each year 24,000 bulls are killed in front of audiences. The bullfighter has to demonstrate his skills to the audience in a dramatic and enthusiastic way. If he makes a good job of it and gets a good round of applause at the end he could be bestowed the ultimate honour by being presented with one of the bull’s ears or its tail. Depending on who is starring in the bullfight, tickets can be expensive. The prices depend on where you sit with the cheapest seats being in the sun and the most expensive seats in the shade. One of the oldest bullrings in Spain is located in the village of Ronda in Andalucia. It is the venue for one of the most spectacular corrida’s of the year. The bullring also houses a museum dedicated to the sport. A variation of the traditional bullfight is bull running. Bulls are released into the streets and masses of participants do their best to avoid them and avoid injury. The best place to see this Pamplona.

Marina del Este, La Herradura As a magazine it is always brilliant for us to interact with all of our advertisers and when possible try their products and services for ourselves. Well to our pleasant surprise we received an invitation from Captain Pat of Bluewater Granada to board his vessel the ‘ANA LUIS’ from the beautiful port of La Herradura on the spectacular area of the Spanish coast called Costa Tropical. We jumped at the chance to have a glimpse of what delights his client’s experience. We arrived at the sun baked Marina del Este and parked with ease in the ports ample car parking area and were immediately astounded by the serenity of the area, with the ports many quaint bars, Tapas, restaurants and pizzerias even a mini market. The plethora of different boats from yachts, fishing boats to luxury vessels for fishing, diving, pleasure charters and cruisers are a sight to see. It did not take us long to find the Ana Luis on her berth and from our first impressions we just knew we were in for a special treat - a pristine vessel with the height of luxury. We were greeted onboard by Captain Pat hand his deck hand, Mark, both of whom were dressed in smart attire and we were shown around the boat. After the additional 8 guests arrived onboard that we were introduced to, we were taken through the necessary safety procedures. We were then asked if we needed any sun tan lotion which they keep onboard. (Although we declined, it was a big mistake – the power of the sun out at sea is strong - so always accept the lotion if offered!) We were then treated to a taster of things to come with canapés and Champagne of the highest, exquisite quality whilst we were still in the port just to get our taste buds tingling. All the fresh food is professionally created and served and with Captain Pat’s meticulous eye to detail it was almost a shame to dig into the gourmet display: But we just had to do it! When everyone was ready the powerful engines were fired up and we set off out of the port into the shimmering blue Mediterranean Sea. It seemed very strange at first, as we did not know any of the other couples onboard but within minutes everyone was chatting to each other and enjoying the sunshine and company.
Canapés & Champagne just for Starters
Captain Pat at the helm Mark made sure we had plenty of soft drinks, beers or spirits during our trip and catered to our every whim in a polite and professional manner whilst Captain Pat was at the helm. Being very knowledgeable Pat knows just about everything there is to know about the waters and scenery we were viewing and is always chatting away, answering questions clients may have. After cruising by for some time in the glorious sunshine and being treated like Kings and Queens the boat anchored off a scenic stretch of coastline. We were treated yet again to more gourmet cuisine and of course drink whilst we took in the scenery, relaxing but keeping our eyes open, hoping to see the local dolphins. You also had the opportunity to swim in the sea and enjoy the rich blue shimmer of the water with an expert looking out for your safety. Everyone took the opportunity to do the Titanic scene at the front of the boat whilst it was anchored. When everyone was fed, watered and relaxed, the anchor was lifted and we started our cruise back to the port. As we re entered the port the cruiser was professionally reversed into the berth where it all started and our new friendships were made. Would we recommend a charter with Bluewater Granada? Oh yes 100%. The internet has revolutionised the way people communicate with each other and social networking sites have facilitated a far greater reach for word of mouth. Nearly 60% of Brits log into their Facebook accounts and 13% sign into Twitter every day. New research has revealed that we increasingly use the internet to find out about beauty products, with 34% logging onto social networking sites to help make our selections. The Mintel report found that almost 10 million people visit beauty and personal care websites with just under nine million resorting to Google when they want to find out more, although Facebook is the preferred vehicle to express thoughts or opinions for almost 75%. And it appears Britain's voucher culture is also playing a part in online behaviour as consumers try to make their budgets stretch, evidenced by the fact that 33% of us logged onto beauty brands to take advantage of special offers and free samples. The research found that just over four in 10 of us interact with a brand online for discounts or information on sales or money-saving tips. There are many degrees of intimacy in friendships and associations and it appears that the role of social networking sites is encouraging a greater degree of intimacy between consumer and brand - and stretching its definition. Just over one in three people engages with or shares their thoughts on beauty and personal care brands they already use but while friendship may be based on trust, a similar number only friend a brand or share their thoughts on it to save money or get free samples.
Just over one in three people engages with or shares their thoughts on beauty and personal care brands they already use but while friendship may be based on trust, a similar number only friend a brand or share their thoughts on it to save money or get free samples. Women are not only more involved in the beauty arena, they are also more likely than men to prove their loyalty online. They are also more adventurous, with 20% keen to try out new products, compared to just 13% of men. Interestingly, tribal behaviour also motivates online visitors with just over a third of those already owning branded products, 22% want their friends to know they like the make and 14% wanted to be associated with it. An estimated 6.6 million adults are beauty and personal care enthusiasts, around 12.2 million rarely experiment and prefer to stick to what they know and more than half fall somewhere in the middle. Although almost a third of enthusiasts keep their negative thoughts and feelings to them selves, instead showing voting with their fingers to unfriend or unlike a brand. Mintel's Alexandra Richmond says: People use social media to share what they think - not just their friends and family. In fact, sharing their thoughts on beauty products with friends, family or colleagues is a key reason that people talk about beauty and personal care brands, both online and offline. This illustrates the strength of word of mouth and the internet plays a key role in enabling people to influence other people's purchases whilst at the same time providing brands with valuable feedback. The 'friendship' between consumer and brand is not based on positive reciprocity, but on an assumption that they will be rewarded by the brand for being friends with it, liking it or sharing their thoughts and opinions on it. Furthermore, continuous access to the internet means that people can share their instant reactions and emotions to the things that they see, hear and experience. Looking forward, this is likely to place more pressure on brands to ensure a good experience all of the time or to respond swiftly in instances where the brand has failed to meet customer expectations.
Three in every four people rely on fake laughs to get them through the day, a survey has revealed, with bosses, work colleagues and friends most likely to trigger our guilty giggles. Where women use fake laughter to fill awkward silences, men are far more likely to use it to make themselves look good in front of their peers. And, when it comes to the age groups, it's the younger generation of 18-34 year olds that are most likely to fall back on their fake laughs rather than admitting they don't get the joke or find it funny. What people do find amusing, however, is themselves, with over two thirds of people admitting to laughing at their own jokes and almost half believing that they're the funniest person in their social circle! Unsurprisingly, men are far more confident in their comic abilities than women. In fact, 55% of men believe they're the funniest person they know compared to just 22% of women. Men also keep more jokes up their sleeves, being able to tell an average of five funnies from memory; more than doubling the two that women can recall. When it comes to hitting our humour hotspots, a witty one liner is the most effective type of joke throughout the UK with rude or blue punch lines falling to fourth in the leader board behind topical and long, story-style gags. Liverpudlian accents were voted the best for joke delivery but it's those in Birmingham that feel the most self-assured in their joke telling abilities giving themselves an above average score for their sense of humour.
The survey findings have been released as part of a nationwide study into British humour conducted by Old Jamaica ginger beer in its on-going search to unearth the UK's freshest joketelling talent. Heather Jones, Senior Brand Manager, says: With wet weather and financial fears dominating the headlines, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Britain may be feeling a little blue this but that's certainly not the case. We may not necessarily think that the people around us are hilarious but, as the research shows, we're full of confidence when it comes to our own comedy flair and that's great news for the nationwide talent search we're currently under taking. But while men are likely to get a chorus of laughs if they make a joke in the boardroom, women have more chance of being met with an awkward silence. Linguistics expert Judith Baxter undertook an 18-month study into speech patterns at business meetings, including at two companies in the FTSE 100 and found that women's attempts at humour are often seen as contrived, defensive or just mean. She discovered that while 90% of jokes made by businessmen triggered were rewarded with laughter, at least 80% made by their female counterparts resulted in silence. Unsurprisingly, given the findings, men are three times more likely to use humour when leading a meeting while women might be advised to keep their jokes for people who will appreciate them!

Back in the 1980s Carrie was synonymous with a girl covered in pig's blood, who wound up trapping her school year in the gym during prom and burning the building down. Evidently times have changed, as this month's must-have young adult coming of age yarn goes to show. So whilst some might presume The Carrie Diaries is a belated prequel to Stephen King's nightmare about a telekinetic teen, it isn't. Instead, as fans of Sex and the City will probably already know, it's the latest effort from Candace Bushnell, the woman who first gave us those stories of love and life in New York. As we've already suggested, this isn't really the next instalment in the Carrie Bradshaw story ( SATC 's leading lady), but rather a jump backwards. The target audience isn't as mature when compared with her world famous creation, and our focus is not Carrie the column writing, Big-loving journalist. Fear not, as the title suggests Carrie does feature as the central protagonist. Luckily for her, though, she's figured out a way to truly wind back the clock (Samantha will be jealous), and so the story takes place during her senior high school year. Already self-assured, but no doubt prone to emotional outbursts and moments of written contemplation, think a typical girl on the cusp of adulthood- convinced she's ready for real life, whether that's the case or not. Similarities with Sex and the City abound, albeit without the parts that would worry parents (like we said, it's not aimed at them), we learn how Carrie has a great group of friends, who are the most important thing in her life. That is until sexy Sebastian Kydd arrives on the scene, she falls for him, and then realises one of those treasured girls has betrayed her. Needless to say, things will never be the same again. With this in mind the fundamental story is really about how a relatively ordinary, everyday young lady managed to become a confident, successful adult. The impetus being on the ability to think and stick up for yourself, not be swayed by pressure and ultimately stand up for what's right. All rather moralistic, which isn't too surprising given Bushnell's original triumph sent out similar well-meant messages, hence its overwhelming popularity. Better yet, whilst this newest addition to the franchise will be stocked on a different shelf, there's plenty here that's worth borrowing from your daughter. Bargain.
Studies estimate that up to 400,000 overseas properties are now owned by the British. The total value of UK-owned foreign residential property has increased threefold over the past decade and overseas property investors are enjoying their share of a ÂŁ52 billion industry. It seems that owners of overseas property are increasingly motivated by investment potential rather than simply buying a private holiday home in the sun. Investment potential has been fuelled by the relative attractiveness of overseas prices compared to the prices of second homes in the UK. The ability to finance purchases with the high levels of equity built up in purchasers' main UK residence is also a driving factor.
Other forces behind this emerging investment market are the reduction in the cost of flying through the expansion of routes served by low cost airlines along with increased political and economic stability in countries abroad, particularly for new members of the EU. As a result, buyers are also looking further afield, from traditional western European destinations to the likes of Bulgaria, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. With more property buyers abroad thinking of their home as an investment rather than a second home, 43 per cent of buyers in the survey said they are driven to purchase property with high rental appeal and value. Attributes such as proximity to the sea, whether a property is in a scenic location and easily accessible to an airport are key considerations for buyers. The choice of country also dramatically affects a property's rental potential: cheap property may not be the best choice if you are looking for maximum rental yield. Typically, the highest rents are being achieved in established European holiday destinations such as France, Greece and Portugal. However, while rental yields are highest in Italy, the price per bedroom is also the highest in Europe and rental yields are reduced by high capital values. Along with rental appeal, investment choices are most influenced by the cost of property (26 per cent), re-sale potential (20 per cent) and economic performance of the region (11 per cent).
After much talk at last we now hear that Moody’s, the rating agency, downgraded the UK’s sovereign credit rating by one notch, from AAA to AA1. What impact this will have upon the UK we are not sure although it could be that the talk has been factored in. However whilst the pound did weaken against both the dollar and euro the loss is certainly something that the Labour party will jump on. The pound had been in retreat for a couple of weeks lately with one or two surges and recovering ground but it was always short lived. Another consideration for the weaker pound came surprisingly from the Bank of England minutes showing that 3 members voted in favour of additional QE and one of those was Mr Mervyn King the Governor. With inflation running at 2.7% and an expectation it will increase before it gets better you start to question what will happen when the new governor Mr Carney takes over in July. Add this to a shortfall of £7bn and a lack of new anticipated revenue from the sale of 4G then the poor old treasury has been dealt another blow. With further corporate losses and tax revenue likely to drop away you can understand why the two other credit agencies have their review on standby. Thankfully unemployment has fallen in the UK and now stands at 7.8% however with increased pressure on consumer spending and imports becoming much more expensive (petrol and food) the UK has to look on the bright side and export more whilst the advantage is in their favour . This could be hard to achieve particularly that this is the worst post war recovery time frame. Ok so what is happening in the eurozone? Italy are at the polls and whilst we wait the final result and a little uncertainty creeps into the eurozone thankfully Cyprus now has a new head and he will agree to the terms for Cyprus to receive the much needed 18/19bn worth of euros. The European Central Bank has just reported that fewer than expected banks have taken the chance to repay it cheap loans and have indicated that the of the 130billion euros expected only 61.1 billion will be paid back I wish my bank would adopt the same policy when I borrow… With the Eurozone Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), covering manufacturing and services, dropping to 47.3 in February from 48.6 in January this points to another quarter of contraction for the monetary union. The index for manufacturing slipped to 47.8, with a deeper decline only averted due to strong export performance in Germany. The gauge for the service sector meanwhile dropped to 47.3 from 48.6 with domestic demand weak across all regions. A big worry is France; the second-largest member state has not been performing too well, leaving Germany shouldering much of the burden in the battle against the Eurozone recession. Thankfully both Italian and Spanish 10 year bond yields are not causing concern with rates around 4.4% for Italy and 5.3% for Spain well below that damaging number of 7%.
Over in the States Mr Obama has a difficult task as the March 1st deadline looms which will bring in spending cuts of around $85billion unless he can agree to a much broader budget with the House. With a focus now being shown by The Federal Reserve whose current policy is to buy $40bn of mortgage-backed securities per month until the labour market improves substantially and better than expected new home sales for 2012 it seems the US is in a better position than the UK or Eurozone. When buying resale property the most important advice is to hire a qualified lawyer. If you are a foreigner, a Spanish lawyer can act on your behalf both on buying or selling property. As well as being fluent in their own language a Spanish lawyer will have access to legal articles and material related to conveyance procedure. A lawyer will typically charge 1% of the property value plus VAT. Registered lawyers need to abide by the Code of Ethics of the regional Law Society to which they belong. Only registered lawyers have professional indemnity insurance which may protect you in the event of malpractice or negligence. If the property you wish to buy is of a high value you should seek specific advise so as to mitigate tax exposure, especially to Spanish Inheritance Tax. It is possible to request a list of recommended lawyers, who will correspond with you in English, from the British consulate. You will need to make sure that the property you wish to purchase has been properly registered. It is common for extensions on properties not to be registered. For example a four-bedroom villa may only be registered as a two-bedroom villa. This problem can be overcome by signing a new build deed at the notary and paying the local tax levied by the Town Hall for the extension. This deed is then registered and the property description amended.
Illegal rural properties may be fraught with legal problems. For example a property that may have only been given a license to build a tool hut but a villa has been built instead. It is essential that you retain a lawyer if considering purchasing a rural property.
You need to establish if the property you wish to purchase has tenants living in it. The laws in Spain are biased towards tenants and if you purchase a resale you will be forced to let the tenancy elapse to take possession if the tenancy agreement was signed after the 1st of January 1995. Long term tenancies in Spain are for five years although you may be able to reach an agreement with the tenant in exchange for a settlement but you cannot force them to leave. Unfortunately there is no Tenant’s Public Registry in Spain so it is always a gamble buying a resale property. If you are buying property in a Spanish Community of Owners it is worth requesting the Community Statutes and the Internal Community Rules to avoid potential problems with your neighbours. Some Internal Community Rules ban tenants from using the community pool so if you intend to let your property out this would be a huge problem. Also it is worth making sure you have enough money to cover any expenses for example pool and grounds maintenance. Any unpaid bills will result in the Community of Owners placing a charge against our property. This could ultimately lead to your property being auctioned off publicly to recoup the debt. It will be necessary to open a Spanish bank account in order to pay utility bills as the utility companies do not accept overseas payments. In order to purchase or sell a property in Spain it is necessary to have an NIE number. This is a tax identification number that would be required for opening a bank account, buying a car, inheriting assets in Spain as well as buying and selling property. You cannot complete on a property in Spain without an NIE number. Once you’ve completed on a property you will need to make sure that the property is registered properly under your name. The process takes on average 30-60 days after completion. Once the property has been registered you can request the original Title Deed. It is advisable to make a Spanish will to dispose of your Spanish estate. This will save your beneficiaries money, time and problems.

It all used to be so simple. You spotted an offer for a cut-price flight and booked it, perhaps paying a few pounds extra in airport taxes. Nowadays, the price of the flight is almost irrelevant. Between luggage charges, admin fees, travel insurance that you probably don't want and seat selection surcharges, the list of supposed extras seems to get longer and longer. Of course some of these extras, like an extortionate ÂŁ70 to take a suitcase, are fairly essential unless you're just jetting off for a long weekend and are able to wear all your clothes for the flight. And it would appear that an increasing amount of budget air travellers are heartily sick of being stuck with surcharges for essential extras - and are demanding an end to unfair airline fees. A survey of more than 3,000 budget air travellers conducted by global flight search engine WhichBudget, found that 65% of people overwhelmingly voted for an end to checked bag fees. A constant minefield for passengers on cheap flights, bag fees have increased dramatically in recent years, hand-in-hand with stringent size and weight regulations and penalty charges of up to ÂŁ20 per kilo for passengers found with sinful amounts of excess weight at check in. The survey of 3,265 travellers, approximately 20% of them UK residents, found baggage fees to be the number one bugbear that passengers want to see disappear. Credit and debit card charges - a recent focus of a European Union debate which decided they must be capped - came in second place, earning 42% of votes, followed by booking and admin charges with 37% of votes. Date and name changes received 24% of votes, choosing seats and priority boarding received 24% and in-flight food and drinks attracted just 21%, showing that passengers are more concerned about travel logistics than in flight refreshments.
On the back of these results, a new survey designed to assess passengers' opinions about various elements of cheap flights and elicit the most ridiculous tales from the baggage hall was launched by WhichBudget, in conjunction with Budget Airline Watch, a new consumer-interest website for air travellers. With its eye on the skies, Budget Airline Watch provides people using UK budget airlines with information on everything from baggage rules to hidden and extra charges, reviews and travelling with children. Martino Matijevic, co founder of WhichBudget, says: The results of our survey prove that, out of all the hidden and extra charges that are now associated with cheap flights, the fees relating to checked bags are the most unpopular. With 65% of respondents wanting to see an end to these fees, there could be an opportunity for the more customer-focused budget airlines to take the lead in listening to the wishes of the travelling public and emphasise the fact that '20kg of luggage is now included in the fare', as a unique selling point. This comes on the heels of Ryanair's unpopular 'one bag rule' for carry-on luggage being addressed by the European Parliament, which has voted in favour of legislation against airlines insisting that duty fee purchases fit in a single bag, or charging 50 Euros to put the bag in the hold. Budget Airline Watch founder Jo Chipchase said charging passengers for checked bags, excess weight and borderline cabin bags has become an overriding obsession with budget airlines. She adds: Unsuspecting passengers who don't pre-book their hold bags may find themselves paying up to a whopping ÂŁ150 for a 15kg bag at the airport, making their cheap flight not so cheap. Meanwhile, those who turn up with a few sundresses or beach towels too many are forced to bin the excess weight or pay up to ÂŁ20 per extra kilo to check the bag into the hold. Rather disturbingly, luggage scales in airports aren't regularly calibrated because there's no legal requirement to do so. No wonder passengers dislike the baggage part of the flight experience. It is time for airlines to take notice before passengers start voting - with their seats."

A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from the Gold Coast when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked “Are you going to the Gold Coast?” 'Sure,' answered the blonde, 'do you need a lift ?' 'Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I’ve got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the Gold Coast Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me ? I'll give you $100 for your trouble.” 'I'd be happy to,' said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of the Gold Coast when suddenly he was horrified!! There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. 'What the heck are you doing here?' he demanded, 'I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo.' 'Yes, I know you did,' said the blonde,' but we had money left over --- so now we're going to SeaWorld

For inexperienced wine drinkers, choosing a bottle of wine from the masses is plagued by far too many choices and complicated further by the dos and don'ts of wine culture. Wine buffs and experts turn wine drinking into a fine art, but elevating wine to such heights puts it out of reach of many, particularly young adults. Although wine has grown in popularity among 20-25-year-old Brits in the last decade, many are put off from experimenting with wine out of a fear of its complexity. An international study by VINEXPO, organiser of the world's biggest wine and spirit exhibition, is prompting winemakers and retailers to make a bigger effort to interest young adults in a bid to overcome wine's complex image. VINEXPO's research found that the younger generation want to have a better understanding of wine. They perceive wine drinking as refined, cultivated and an aspirational part of growing up. The study groups in the UK, Belgium, France, the US and Japan commented that they wanted to be able to drink wine like older people, while others said wine drinking was associated with more reasonable behaviour and sophisticated enjoyment. However, there are many obstacles holding back young adults from appreciating wine. The whole culture of wine and matching wine with food is confusing: there are so many grapes, so many kinds and styles of wine, so many countries, regions, labels and brands. The respondents believe that good wine is too expensive, they feel that the wine culture and vocabulary excludes them, they experience a lack of understanding of the many different wines and wine styles, and are bewildered by choice and confusing labels. Among other obstacles quoted is the length of time and perseverance required to learn how to appreciate wine: it is almost viewed as an art that must be studied.
When asked for their recommendations, the research group suggested clear positioning on taste features and explanations about how wine matches with food. They also suggested that retailers and bars should offer wine sections for young adults, while some suggested wines that are marketed more directly at young people through trendier names and bottle designs. Wine drinking among young adults around the world varies immensely. In France and Belgium, wine becomes a part of everyday life in childhood and as a result young people have a greater understanding of wine. In the UK, young adults are slowly becoming more familiar with wine, but there is still a lack of general acceptance within the younger generations. In the US and Japan, wine drinking among young adults is reserved for special occasions. US respondents indicated not only that they are not very familiar with wine, but that wine consumption and knowledge were features of European culture. For young adults who are cautious of dipping their taste buds into the vast pool of wine on the market, the best thing they can do is try, try and try again and don't listen to those stuffy wine buffs too much. Wine knowledge comes only with time and experimentation: studying has never been

BEEF STROGANOFF This much-loved Russian dish is less complicated than it looks and is a great option for a lastminute dinner party. It's traditionally made with button mushrooms, but you could substitute Shitake mushrooms for an even richer flavour. Serves 4.

Spoon the finished dish into a serving plate and sprinkle with the paprkia. Serve immediately with pasta or herby mashed potatoes.
SWEET CHILLI CRAB NOODLES Delicious, delicate and ready in less than 20 minutes, this is ideal for a light midweek supper. Don't over-soak the noodles though, or they might go soggy. If you don't fancy crab, this would work with thinly-sliced stir fried chicken, too. Serves 2.
INGREDIENTS 150g vermicelli noodles sunflower oil for frying 1 red pepper, de-seeded and sliced into thin strips 100g baby sweetcorn, cut in half lengthways 6 spring onions, trimmed and sliced 1 x 200g can white crab meat, drained 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup 1 tablespoon soy sauce fresh coriander, chopped, to garnish
METHOD 1. Put the noodles into a bowl of boiling water and soak for 5 minutes. Pour into a colander and leave to drain. 2. In a non-stick pan, heat the oil. Add the peppers and sweetcorn and stir-fry for 3 minutes. 3. Add the drained noodles, onions, crab, chilli sauce, ketchup and soy sauce. Stir fry the mixture for a further 3 minutes. 3. Spoon into serving bowls and scatter the fresh coriander over the top to garnish. Eat with chopsticks if you're feeling adventurous!
For most dog lovers, their prized pooch is the centre of attention in the home. Groomed, fussed over and adored, the dog is often the focus of lashings of love, and enjoys the undivided devotion of its owner. So it's no surprise that our four-legged friends can become a little confused and upset if the pecking order in the household is disrupted by the arrival of a new member of the family. Here, dog behaviourist Mike Mullan, who has more than 50 years' experience of working with the animals, shares his advice on how to ensure a smooth transition for all. And interestingly, he has some unusual advice for women preparing to bring a baby into the house. He says: If you're pregnant, I advise women to get a baby-sized doll and walk around with it on your shoulder. Pretend to feed it and give it lots of attention, just as you would a real baby. Even bring baby clothes that have not been washed into the house so the dog gets used to the smell. When the big day arrives and it's time to bring your new bundle of joy into the household, Mike recommends using a baby gate to separate the dog from the baby while at the same time allowing the animal to see what you are doing. He adds: Every time you feed the baby, feed the dog, so the dog has no reason to be jealous. Don't push it away or put it in another room - too many people do this and then the dog gets resentful. You don't have to have your hands on the dog all the time but make sure the dog can see what's going on. And when you take the baby out in the pram, take the dog too so it's involved in what's going on. Then the dog gets to see that this baby's now a bonus as it gets more walks and more fun. But never ever leave a dog alone in a room with a baby, no matter how good you think that dog is.
In terms of breeds, Mike says sturdy medium-sized dogs are best if you have young children. He advises: If you have children between the ages of two and eight, you need a dog that's reasonably robust with a calm outlook on life. It depends on the size of house and age of children but a retriever is strong enough to put up with children pulling at him and has the temperament to cope. A Labrador is similar and an English Pointer is a very gentle and loving dog. If you haven't got a lot of space you want a dog that's easy to look after, a standard Schnauzer or a wiry terrier. Staffordshire Bull Terriers also make fantastic family pets. In his work as a respected advisor in court cases involving dogs, Mike has sadly seen far too many cases where children have been bitten by previously-calm animals, with disastrous consequences. So he is adamant that the two should never be left alone together. He says: Small children can pull a dog's ear and if the dog is asleep it could turn round and bite the child. It takes just a split second and the damage is done. No child under the age of 14 - even if they have been raised with dogs - should be left alone with dogs. Underneath, dogs are still a wild animal and we must recognise this fact in training them and caring for them. We have a responsibility to our children and we have a responsibility to our dogs.
