How has Photoshop enabled the impossible to happen in photographs? Why artists have pushed the boundaries between reality and the impossible. Over recent years there has been more use of Photoshop to create a narrative art work. This means that they can create a narrative piece of work which is more to what they want to achieve when they want to tell a story within their work. Using photo manipulation within Photoshop artists can get more outcomes and make a more effective outcome which tell a narrative in a more interesting way. Photoshop has become more available for more artists to use in their work. Now, many artists are trying to push the boundaries between reality and the impossible. The emergence of Photoshop has put artists in a better position as they can merge reality with the impossible with a computer. This essay will show how different artists have used Photoshop in different ways. These three artists have elements of this within their work, these are Daisuke Takakura, Barron Rivera and Vincent Bourilhon. All of these artists use Photoshop in different ways but they all push the reality to the limit. When researching about these artists there will be a conclusion made on How has Photoshop enabled the impossible to happen in photographs? Why artists have pushed the boundaries between reality and the impossible. The first artist is Daisuke Takakura Japanese photographer Daisuke Takakura mainly focuses on clone photos. He has a project called “Monodramatic” this features some characters more than once and sometimes more than 10, with some of the clones so far away from the camera that they can barely be seen in the distance. The second artist is Vincent Bourilhon a Parisian. This artist mainly focuses on using dramatic scenery within his work and uses a figure within his work to portray a store within his work. The final artist that I will look at is Barron Rivera. He us a Maryland based photographer who is known for his series of work called “Levitation. He uses on person within this work and location where people don’t usually fall in. Daisuke Takakura relies on photoshop to enable the impossible to happen with his photos. This is because in his work he creates scenes with multiple of the same person in his clone pieces. This is produced by him take a series of photographs of the same person in a different position within the setting and then cutting them out and placing them within one all together to give the effect of cloning. This is showing that they want to push the boundaries between reality and the impossible as they are showing that the person involved is a clone within the real world but. Daisuke Takakura once said “In theater, there is a style known as “monodrama.” It usually involves just one actor, playing one character. I began with this method but I decided to push it further. I wanted to explore the meeting of many such singular selves”.

This shows that He wanted to push the boundaries and show one person has many different sides of them self this is also backed up by “Remember, there might be a past out there that is different from “your” now. But that’s because those other selves were not selected. Your other self might be in its own “now”, somewhere.” When people look, they will see that there is multiply people and think that it is a normal picture but then they will relies that it is the same within it and them make them question why that is the case. He uses this method as he wants to portray that there are many different side which may have had or going to have in the future and what another you might be doing at the same time. He uses narrative in his work so that he can show the story of the different versions of the same person could be doing at the same time.
Within his work, he has some aspects of realism as they he uses real location with a real person with it. This represents that the Daisuke Takakura wants to show how real the different sides of people are. Within the piece above it is showing the emotion of happiness and joy. Also, when he is using the bright colours for the cloths it shows that they are joyful where as if it was dark she would be down.
Charlie Franklin Vincent Bourilhon is a 22-year-old children & fine art photographer from Le Havre who is based in Paris His work has been the subject of several exhibitions: in 2014, he was the guest of Happy Happening organized by aufeminin.com. His photographs have also been in publications in the German press (magazine Philosophie), Netherlands (Libel) and Switzerland. Vincent relies on both primary images and photoshop to create his work. He does this by going out to the location of where he wants to set his narrative piece. He then edits the images on Photoshop to create a gloomier setting compared to the original image and he wants to show a dark story behind the images. As they are
Throughout his work, photographer Vincent Bourilhon creates cinematic narratives through his use of positioning and image manipulation. Every photograph He tells a story, yet all of his images are complete bodies of work. He draws inspiration from dreams, poetry, and film, Bourilhon takes the viewer into him fantastical imagination where human emotions are visually emphasized and the line between reality and dreams is blurred. years. “Vincent draws inspiration of my dreams and the dreams of fantastic worlds. In his photographs, you will find lightly muted soft colors, incredible, alluring, fairy tales and a sense of wonder. Also in his work the main subject is in the middle of the work. In his work there is a theme of letting things go or move. he does this mainly by making things float in the air. This links up with him wanting to base his work around dreams as dreams are mostly relaxing and the felling of floating takes of the fell of real life.
Charlie Franklin Vincent Bourilhon produces his work with a combination of photographs which he takes within real environments and involves digital manipulation within every piece that he produces. He, uses himself as the main object in all of his work and then uses other elements to make it feel unrealistic and put a magical fell within his work. This can be seen within the piece where he is looking into a glass gar and a ship is there. This gives his work a feel of the impossible happening within the real world. Throughout his work, he shows small stories with emotions within every piece. “where human emotions are visually emphasized and the line between reality and dreams is blurred. This means that he wants to show the characters emotion in all of his work in an unusual way which many people would not think of doing in their work. Below is showing a person winding them self-up, this means that they are getting them selfworried about something, as the background is dark and not bright sunshine. This makes the spectator
Both Daisuke Takakura and Vincent Bourilhon have used Photos and Photoshop to make their ideas seen throughout their work.
Charlie Franklin Daisuke Takakura uses photoshop to manipulate photos to show the different sides of people showing them as clones and what the different sides of the person would be doing in that position. Whereas, Vincent Bourilhon has used it to show the story of different emotions of people throughout his work. There is a similarity between their work is the theme of their work within Daisuke Takakura work there is many of the same person showing their emotions whereas within Bourilhon he has a person showing their emotions. The messages which they want to portray within their work is different to each other’s, within Bourilhon’s work he wants to show that you should let your expressions out within a piece of work. Whereas Daisuke Takakura is showing that people have many different sides which you may never see. They both have mono-scenic image. The usage of this is to make sure that they show the narrative within one piece. This is to show the story in a simple way so that the viewer can understand the stories within the art better and much quicker than having set up in sequence of photos. in contrast Vincent Bourilhon only uses one person to portray his narrative, but Daisuke Takakura uses multiply of one person. this is because they both have a story to tell but they must show it in a different way. This is because in Vincent Bourilhon work he mostly shows mood and Takakura show the different sides of people. Both artists answer my question . Both have used photoshop within their work to get their stories across. The use of photoshop by both of these artists have changed their views on life. Daisuke Takakura use of the clones to show different sides of people have changed the view of the normal lives of the ordinary. Rivera is a Maryland-based photographer who defies gravity in his “Levitation” photograph series. He uses images of landscapes and then places images of people within it to create a narrative piece. Rivera relies on photoshop to enable the impossible to happen within the work that he produces. This is because the main feature of the images that he produces is not possible to take with just a camera. This is because the person is levitating and also the backgrounds of most of his work go blurry when you go further back in them.
Charlie Franklin Barron Rivera uses a mixture of photographs and photo manipulation though all of his levitation work that he has produced. When he produces his work, he makes the background dark and gloomy, this is to make the person seeing it fell the emotion which they person at the center of the image is felling. Using these types of backgrounds, he is portraying that they are feeling depressed. Also, using the levitation theme, it makes it fell like they are frozen in that felling and finding it hard to get out of it. The levitation which he uses in his work pushes the boundaries between the reality and the impossible as this is not a normal thing to happen. “Rivera's photos take on a surreal tone as it captures acts that are simply impossible in this world”
Also, he does not limit the levitation to just the person within his work. In one of his pieces he also has rocks and rubble levitating alongside the person. “Levitation isn't just limited to people”. When he uses not just the person levitating it gives the story of the image a greater depth, as it makes you wonder why that is the case. Rivera has kept a theme of nature and the outside throughout all his work. In all of his work he does something different with the person or object which is levitating he still uses nature as the setting. This creates a link between all of his pieces but this also makes it a signature Rivera piece. From the theme, we can tell if it is his or not even if they all have different settings and feelings but all still have this link of nature. Within his work, he tells more than one story with one piece. In the image bellow it could be showing someone with depression who has decide to end their live by going in front of a train or have jumped of the wall. For my final outcomes, I have uses a variety of different artist these include Barron Rivera, Daisuke Takakura and Vincent Bourilhon. All of these within their work tell a story.
Charlie Franklin Below is my own work
The artist Daisuke Takakura, I used their technique with using the same person over and over again for a clone look within my final piece which I have produced. Also, I have used the idea of surrealism from all of the artist within my work. within my final pieces, I incorporated the same person falling and then making a pile. In one of my final pieces I have made the background of it dark this was to link the piece to Barron Rivera who uses a similar technique where he makes it blurrier. Having studied artist that use digital software and photography to create drama and strong story line I have developed that string sense of narrative in own design work. MY work is also like Barron Rivera works as in one of the outcomes there is a single person still falling within the design. I felt like this was important to have within that piece as it shows how the rest have piled up instead of having the question unanswered. Also, my work relates to Vincent Bourilhon with the techniques which I have used. the majority of my design is based around photo manipulation and so is his. I have done this, to make a unusual story behind the piece what I have designed.
In conclusion artists, have pushed the boundaries between reality and the impossible. This can be seen throughout the work of all the three-artist seen within this essay who are Barron Rivera Vincent Bourilhon and Daisuke Takakura. They all want to show the impossible so photoshop enables them to do so. However, they all do it using different themes throughout their work. These artists show emotion throughout all their art work in different ways. Daisuke Takakura would not be able to clone the same person repeatedly throughout his work. If he did not have photoshop then he would not be able to show the different sides of the same person. Instead he would have had to use a series of image to do this wo=hat would not off
Charlie Franklin have had the same effect than all in the same one. Also, Vincent Bourilhon would have found it difficult to show his stories without using photoshop for photo manipulation this is because he fuses in and out doors elements to enhance his story telling throughout his work. However, the work of Barron Rivera could be created without the use of photoshop as they could take a series of photos when someone is jumping or doing a back flip at the point to make it look like they are floating. However, the use of photoshop speeds up the process as if they tried to take them image it would take a long time. Also, this would limit what he allows to levitate within his work. Without photoshop none of these artists would not have been able to tell their stories without using photoshop enabling them to create them impossible. This is because it allows them to create what they want and not limit them to what they can see through a camera lens
