design studio beta> PLEASURE GARDEN

I’ve recently completed my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Melbourne majoring in Architecture. Originally from Brisbane, I moved to Melbourne in 2018 to pursue University away from the comfort of my family home and have loved it from day one.

ABOUT ME

Alongside my passion for architecture, I love getting on the tools. I’ve previously held various labouring positions on construction sites, a timber yard and a caravan repair shop. These positions have allowed me to learn from masters in their respective trades, whether it be on a building site, or inside a caravan.

the LIBRARY and the CITY

BRIEF Design a new public library for the City of Melbourne, to be located at 124-140 Little Bourke Street.

REJECTION and DISRUPTION The city is a constant reminder of colonisation, manifested in street names, building typologies, landscapes and industrialisation. Through the rejection and disruption of the cities forms, social orders and institutionalism, the library can envisage new intercultural relationships for everyone to experience.

collective housing

BRIEF The topic of Studio Epsilon is collective housing and the design of multi-residential buildings in the present context of middle-ring suburbs in Melbourne, characterised by demographic changes, economic pressures and diversified ways of living.

EXPLORING the ORDINARY In this project there was an intent to make ordinary processes and spaces into places of joy to encourage the occupant to focus their attention back to the fundamentals of living. By connecting the user back to the spaces that humanise us, the design seeks to give the user awareness of self.

THE PLEASURE GARDEN

BRIEF A central mandate of the studio is to create an environment where buildings and gardens are arranged in a manner that is coordinated and complimentary.

the BROKEN COURTYARD The garden represents a series of broken down courtyards forming into coherent spaces for private and public to interact. Where a courtyard encloses the space, the built form here contracts and expands to invite users across the entire site. The harsh, recti-linear lines of the forms are contrasted by the lush garden space in which the forms sit.

construction: ANALYSIS

Construction Analysis explores the idea of construction as a process that strategically links structural principles to building elements, systems, materials, and techniques. In this assignment we investigated John Wardle Architect’s Lake Wendouree house.

e: charlie.reinhardt@outlook.com p: 0458021692

19

construction: DESIGN

Construction Design moves from the analysis of specific architectural ideas to arrive at the evaluation and selection of implementation alternatives. This is investigated by studying a section of William Boag’s Architects Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School.
