Design projects Design Project 1 - Living Neighbourhood Part 1 Group Work: Urban Context, Site Analysis and Precedence Study Part 2 1. Densify: • Densify the three house lots by increasing the number of dwelling units in each plot, turning the originally single occupancy terrace house into a two-storey dual or triple occupancy with shared amenities, external and semi external areas; the dwelling area per-person aimed at 35- 45m2. • To translate the increased density by means of schematic spatial and massing configurations. 2. Intensify: • Intensify the neighbourhood’s urban and environmental characteristics by proposing shared facilities for the inhabitants, environmentally attuned landscape strategies (such as green roof, urban farm, rainwater garden or collecting system to mitigate UHI and loss of pervious surface) • To create a productive interface between each lot/dwelling unit and the adjacent laneway (Nicholls Lane) and surrounding footpaths/streets.
Design Project 2 - Living House The client for this project is a multigenerational household. The household consists of a working couple with 1 child and the grandparents from one side of the family. The couple purchased the 2-bedroom, 1-study, 1-bathroom terrace house with a substantial financial support from the grandparents who have retired and would like to ‘downsize’ from their suburban house to live closer to their children and grandchild, as well as to Carlton’s abundant urban amenities (shops, clinic, parks, civic places such as library, museum and gallery, etc.). The new house will need to accommodate both the core family and the grandparents, allowing for a balance mix of interaction, independence, and privacy.

HERITAGE RESPONSE
DIAGRAMS The Living Neighbourhood Project involved re-designing 4-10 Macarthur Place by densifying and intensifying. For this, I took a heritage response and identified the triangular pitched roofs that are often hidden behind Melbourne’s traditional facade’s. To do this I represented the pitched roofs in an over expressed triangulation, seperated from the front of the block. The front of the block becoming an interpretation of the facade and the back of the block detached to express the idea of the two typologies being broken apart. By breaking these two things apart, not only is the integrity of the structure expressed, but also the occupants inside the dwellings.

DESIGN STATEMENT Melbourne’s growing trend with facadism - using only the frontage of historical buildings in new developments - is a concern to the city’s heritage. The Facade House aims to make a critique of the trend. Carlton’s facade’s are filled with detailed floral cast iron designs with each house having a variation to the next. By taking this element of the historical facade, the house dives into one specific design from the Sun Foundry (1898) in an attempt to create a design that responds to the heritage at a whole.

Cast Iron Detailing
To reinterpret the facade, one specific railing design has been investigated.
Thick Facade Reimagined The cast iron railing design will become the facade to create transparancy between the public and private.
FORM GENERATION
Cast iron is used heavily in Carlton and adds to the architectural language.

DIAGRAMS The Italianate Terrace house which is commonly seen in Carlton is surrounded by a thick wall when looking in plan. Furthermore, the heritage facade acts as a barrier between the public and private. The Facade House attempts to break down this barrier by reinterpreting the facade to reveal the integrity of not only the structure of the building but also the occupants inside.
To break down the barrier the facade has been re-imagined as a perforated screen in the detail of a cast iron lace design. The facade attempts to expand and reveal upon the history of its site and surroundings to comment on the important issue of facadism.

Front Facade Perforations In order to create transparancy, the design will be perforated on an iron facade.

Final Form
To reinforce the symmetry, the plan and elevation views are the exact same.
The floor plan generation comes from zooming into the cast iron lace. These spiral, vine motifs are included throughout many decorative pieces in the suburb of Carlton. Therefore, to further evaluate the heritage facade, the vine motif has been employed to create interior spaces.
