MUSEUM OF PHOENIX

Design Concept

The idea of merging the old with the new in this design, inspired the relation to the concept of symbiosis. Symbiosis is the interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.

Symbiosis is the foundation for togetherness. through encouraging mutually supportive and beneficial relationships both human and otherwise, the Children's Museum of Phoenix is a habitat for everyone. Aligned with the spirit of the Monroe Street Abbey, the museum and its exhibits are driven by the importance of community, adaptation, and evolution.

The Mother Tree

The largest and oldest tree that holds the rest of the forest together through mutual support, as the Monroe Street Abbey does for the surrounding community. Influencing a series of fungi-like structures added to the tower which now represents "the mother tree".

The Mycelium

Mycelium grown from the mother tree can be harvested and turned into an entirely sustainable, durable building material that is biodegradable, cleans the air, and reduces fossil fuels. This became a key material for the project.
