ADAM PRY ADAM PRY ADAM PRY Adam Pry was named head coach of the Charlotte 49ers golf program in June 10, 2009 after serving in an interim position during the spring, 2009 semester. Pry, who was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, spent a year and a half as the 49ers assistant coach before taking Adam Pry on the roll as interim head coach. As interim head coach, Pry oversaw the 49ers 11stroke victory at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship and 7th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in the program’s fifth straight NCAA appearance. Charlotte all-America and A-10 medalist Corey Nagy advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championship, making his third appearance at the NCAA finals. Career NOTEs: “After completing a national search, I am conTop Finishes: vinced that we have the perfect candidate right in ourmidst,” said Director of Athletics Judy Rose. “Adam 1st @ 2008-09 Atlantic 10 (+20, 872) did an excellent job during a somewhat difficult time. Top SCORES: Losing a head coach mid-year is tough and Adam -8, 844 at 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional stepped right in and made the transition much smoother for our student-athletes. More importantly he provided Honors and Awards: the leadership that had the team peaking at just the right 2009 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year time -- earning our team a trip to the NCAA Tournament.” 2009 Atlantic 10 Champions A finalist for the 2008 Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award, Pry first joined the 49ers 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional Qualifier program in 2007-08. He helped the 49ers on their historic run to becoming the nation’s consensus #1 ranked team in the fall of 2007 and to their eighth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championship. “It’s been my dream to be head coach of a Division I golf team and its obviously exciting to have that dream realized,” said Pry upon his hiring. “What makes it even better is that I get to do it at a place I feel so strongly about. What UNC Charlotte is as a university, what the Charlotte athletic department represents and the principles which Charlotte’s golf team has been built upon make this opportunity so fantastic.” Prior to joining the 49ers program, Pry was a graduate assistant at Miami University of Ohio (2005-2007) and an assistant coach at Oglethorpe Univerity (2004-05). A 2004 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan with a degree in Physical Education, Pry earned his master’s degree from Miami of Ohio in Sports Studies, with a concentration in Sports Behavior and Performance in 2007. Pry was a two-time team captain at Ohio Wesleyan, where he competed at four NCAA National Championships. They placed third in his junior year and seventh in his senior year. He led Ohio Wesleyan to the conference title, three straight years. Pry, who worked at the Duke Golf School for Boys for seven years and was an instructor at the Central Ohio Golf Academy as well as various camps and clinics, worked with both the men’s and women’s teams at Oglethorpe University.

HEAD COACH

Former 49ers standout Andrew DiBitetto was named assistant coach, July 15, 2009. DiBitetto, an all-America golfer and former A-10 Golf Student Athlete of the Year who graduated in 2008, was part of a historic 49ers class that became the first in school history to participate in four straight NCAA Tournaments. A native of Rochester, N.Y., DiBitetto graduated in 2008 with a 3.57 GPA and a degree in business management. Andrew “I am absolutely thrilled to name Andrew DiBitetto as our Assistant Coach,” said head coach Adam Pry. “Andrew’s experience as a highly successful student-athlete, a professional golfer and DiBitetto assistant coach made him the ideal candidate. As a former team member, Andrew is passionate about UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte 49ers golf team. This passion helped Andrew become one of the most successful student-athletes in our team’s history and will certainly serve the golf team extremely well as the assistant coach.” DiBitetto, who served as an interim assistant coach for the 49ers in the spring of 2009, was named an honorable mention all-America as a junior in 2007 after leading the 49ers to a tie for 3rd place at the NCAA National Championships. DiBitetto, who posted a career stroke average of 73.04, finished in 9th place at the NCAA finals, the best-ever finish by a 49ers golfer. In 2008, he keyed a 49ers team that became the first in school history to be ranked as the consensus #1 team in the country. The 49ers would go on to post an 8th-place finish at the NCAA Championships as the golf team became the first program in school history to post back-to-back top 10 finishes in NCAA Championship competition. As interim assistant coach in 2009, DiBitetto helped the 49ers to a fourth straight A-10 title and a fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. A three-time all-conference choice, DiBitetto enjoyed his best season as a junior, shooting a career-best 72.8 stroke average and finishing as the individual runner-up at the Atlantic 10 Championship before posting his top ten individual finish at the NCAA Championship. He was an all-Conference USA second team selection and all-Rookie choice as a freshman in 2005, helping the 49ers to their first-ever NCAA Regional Tournament. DiBitetto was a two-time GCAA Scholar all-America and the 2007 A-10 Golf Student-Athlete of the Year. In 2006, he earned all-Atlantic 10 honors with a fifth-place finish at the league championships as the 49ers won their first A-10 title and advanced through the NCAA Regionals to the 30-team NCAA Championships. The 49ers made history by returning to the NCAA Championships in DiBitetto’s final two years, posting two top 10 overall finishes in 2007 and 2008.

In 2009-10, the Charlotte 49ers completed construction of the office, locker room and hitting carrel facility that now adorns the Charlotte 49ers Short-Game Practice Facility at Rocky River Golf Club in Concord. The building, constructed off the 2nd hole of Rocky River Golf Club, overlooks the existing short-game practice area that was opened in October, 2006. The short-game practice area was the result of a collaborative effort between the university and the City of Concord, which owns Rocky River Golf Club. It provides the 49ers with a place that they can practice every aspect of their game any day of the week. The facility, designed and built by Kris Spence Golf, Inc. of Greensboro, N.C., includes an 8,500-square foot bent grass putting green, chipping areas of both zoysia and bermuda grass, green side and fairway bunkers and 22,000 square feet of practice tee space at the opposite end of Rocky River’s driving range. Now with the completion of the fieldhouse space, the team has adequate locker room space and coaches’ offices as well as two large hitting carrels from which they can examine their technique.

2010 OUTLOOK The Charlotte 49ers seek their fifth straight Atlantic 10 Championship and their sixth straight NCAA tournament bid in 2010. It seems like a broken record. This year, however, with a lot of new faces, Charlotte is far from business as usual. Yes, the 49ers are once-again the preseason favorites to capture the A-10 crown. Yes, the 49ers will be led by seasoned senior Corey Nagy, a three-time all-America and the defending A-10 individual champion. And yes, the 49ers have the reigning A-10 Coach of the Year back to lead the way. But so much is different. Head coach Adam Pry won the A-10 Coach of the Year Award as an interim coach, last season. Nagy, once the young gun in a stacked veteran lineup, is the only 49ers player with over 20 tournaments worth of experience. But, even with a roster that includes 75% freshmen and sophomores the 49ers can expect results. Over the past several years, the 49ers have been nothing if not consistent. And while the 49ers collegiate experience may be low, the overall golf talent remains strong.

Three-time all-America Corey Nagy is the defending A-10 Individual Champion.

Andy is mature way beyond his years. Though Olafur and Andy had the second and third best scoring averages this past fall, I expect to see major contributions from multiple guys this spring.” Charlotte is seeking a 5th straight A-10 title and 6th straight NCAA bid. What is it about the 49ers that have made them successful in the past and that will be key in making them successful in the future.

Sophomore Paul Ferrier earned all-Atlantic 10 honors with a fifth-place finish at the league championship in his freshman season.

class in everything he does. He is a true student-athlete.” In addition to Nagy, the 49ers will have a lot of freshmen and sophomores who are looked to to perform and perform well. How well prepared are they to handle those expectations and pressures: “Pressure and expectations only negatively affect performance if you let it. Though we look young on paper our competitive age is much different. The guys on our team know what helps them play their best golf and the mindset needed to be successful. (Sophomore) Olafur (Loftsson) is a 22-year old sophomore that has already won an Individual National Championship, a Team National Championship and his country’s National Open Championship. He has a proven track record in big tournaments. The same can be said for (freshman) Andy (Sajevic). He has won every major junior championship in the state of Nebraska and competed at multiple USGA Championships.

“A big part of the credit needs to go to our administration. They have made a clear commitment to having a successful golf team and it can be felt throughout the program, year in and year out. From a team standpoint, focusing on player improvement has been our biggest success factor. By doing so, we have been able to play our best golf at the end of the year, when it counts the most.” How excited are you to be taking over full control of the program and making it our own?

“It has been very exciting. I love the challenge of helping individuals accomplish their goals and being part of something bigger than yourself. That is the beauty of college golf. I wake up every day excited and motivated make the team better than it was the day before.” ________________________________ With four straight A-10 titles to its credit and five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, Charlotte continues to build great success. While senior Corey Nagy completes his memorable career, the 49ers look to some young guns to continue to push the 49ers to the top. Sophomores like Ferrier and Tyler Mitchell, who both posted top 15 finishes at the 2009 A-10 Championship will be joined by newcomers like Olafur Loftsson and Andy Sajevic. Loftsson, a sophomore who won the NCAA Div. III title as a freshman and Sajevic, who brings an outstanding resume after a standout career at Fremont (Neb.)

Sophomore Olafur Loftsson won the NCAA Div. III National Championship while at Oglethorpe, last year.

H.S. give the 49ers a strong lineup from top to bottom. Experienced junior Will Golden has proven he can solidify the lineup and he gives Pry additional options and depth. Sophomore Rafael Guererro and freshman Simon St. Louis have not seen as much action but also boast impressive games that could earn them a spot, as well. That competition within the team has bred great success over the years. Maybe 2010 will be business as usual.

Freshman Andy Sajevic will have an immediate impact in his rookie season.
