Head Coach - 16th Season - Drake, 1993 Career Highlights • Charlotte’s all-time winningest coach with 368. • Has led Charlotte to 144 victories in the last four seasons since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference. • Registered 300th career victory in 2007 in a 4-2 victory over A-10 foe George Washington. • Third-longest tenured head coach at Charlotte behind men’s tennis and baseball.

In 2009, Aimee DeVos completed her 15th season as head coach and 16th with the 49ers softball program. After serving as the interim head coach in 1995, DeVos was named head coach for the 1996 season. In her tenure, DeVos has made great strides with the program on and off the field. She has recorded Charlotte’s largest, thirdlargest and fourth-largest win totals, while also putting together nine 20-win seasons. She is the first 49er head coach to surpass both the 200 and 300 career-win marks and is approaching her 400th career victory. DeVos achieved her 300th career victory in a 4-2 conference decision against George Washington at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament. Just as important as her success on the field, DeVos has also graduated 100 percent of her players since taking over as head coach. She recorded her most successful season in 2006, leading the 49ers to numerous school records, including the most wins in a season (42), as well as the program’s first-ever conference championship when Charlotte went 17-3 in their first season in the A-10, capturing the regular season title. In addition to setting the singleseason records for hits, batting average, homers and RBI, her 2006 team included a record six all-conference selections, including four first-team honorees. Three of those players repeated in 2007 to claim conference nods. Last season, Charlotte posted its fourth-straight 30-plus win season by going 33-16 including a 14-4 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Niners’ conference record earned them the Atlantic 10 Conference Runner-up title missing out on the conference crown by only two games. The season saw several program records fall with Emily Jeffery fanning a program-high 294 batters on her way to a 23-win season, the third highest total in Niner history. On the offensive end, Sarah Malene moved into first place with 150 career runs scored and Cee Brooks took over the title for most career RBI with 113. Serena Smith lead Charlotte in hits for the secondconsecutive season with 62, while adding a team high .363 batting average. Three 49ers claimed First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors with Malene, Jeffery and Smith picking up the awards. In the 2008 season, DeVos put together a 35-win season, the third-highest win total in program history, which included a trip to the championship game of the A-10 Tournament, hosted at Charlotte’s own D.L. Phillips Sports Complex where the Niners

took on No. 20 Massachusetts. That season, the 49ers claimed a victory over then-No. 15 North Carolina at D.L. Phillips. In the circle, Katy Hackett set the then single-season record with 176 strikeouts, while Emily Jeffery put up 146 strikeouts on her way to 18 wins. On the offensive end, all-conference selection Sarah Malene shattered her 2006 single-season record with 46 runs, while Serena Smith re-wrote the record books with 71 hits. Four 49ers were named to the all-tournament team, while Malene and freshman Whitney Williams earned all-conference nods. A testament to her coaching ability and strength of the program, several of DeVos’ players have continued to play after their collegiate careers. In 1999, Janine Repole became the first member of the 49ers drafted by the Women’s Professional Fastpitch League. More recently, both Kristin White (2002) and Melanie Thevenote (2003) played internationally. A four-year letterwinner at Drake, the Yorkville, Ill., native boasts a healthy softball resume from a successful program. DeVos graduated from Drake in 1993 with a degree in business marketing. She was a 1993 All-Missouri Valley Conference player after leading the Bulldogs to the MVC regular season and tournament championships and a spot in the 1993 National Invitational Championship. A shortstop and outfielder, DeVos still ranks among Drake’s all-time leaders in home runs. In addition to her head coaching duties, DeVos conducts several summer and winter softball camps and clinics. In the summer of 2004, she coached a select group of players to play the U.S. Olympic team in Charlotte. DeVos and her husband, Dan, have two sons, Nolan and J.J. Her husband is the Director of the Annual Fund for the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation.

2009 Atlantic 10 Regular Season Runner-up

Kristi Killough

Kristi Killough enters her second season as an assistant coach for the 49ers softball squad. Her duties include overseeing of the offense and outfielders. In her first season as an assistant coach for the 49ers, Killough helped to improve Charlotte in several offensive categories including; batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and on-

base percentage. Prior to joining her alma mater’s coaching staff on August 1, 2008, Killough was the Head Coach at nearby Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, N.C. while also coaching the Firestix travel team. At Charlotte, Killough lettered from 2004-07, where she was a standout for the Niners by twice being named a First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer. She holds both the career and season home run records with 20 overall and during the 2006 season. Killough was key to the 2007 team, who appeared in Charlotte’s first ever A-10 Championship game, by being named to the A-10 All-Tournament team, after hitting .538 in four games with three RBI. She wrapped up a solid career in 2007 with 105 career RBI, which is one shy of the all-time school record. A native of Concord, N.C., Killough graduated in December 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Grades Education.

Assistant Coach (Pitching) - 2nd Season - Missouri State, 2008

Melissa Porche begins her second year with the 49er staff after being named assistant coach on August 1, 2008. She handles all of the pitching duties for the Niners. Last season, Charlotte improved in several important categories under the tutelage of Porche. The 49ers saw increases in strikeouts, while decreasing the opponent’s batting average and extra-base hits. Charlotte’s strikeouts jumped from 332 in 2008 to 401 last season, despite playing in fewer games. The number was so drastic that Niners’ pitchers struck out on average three more batters per game in 2009 and lowered their opponent’s batting average from .257 to .218. Prior to joining up with coach DeVos, Porche played internationally in Europe during the summer of 2008, after wrapping up her senior season at Missouri State. During her four year campaign at Missouri State, she was the ace of the staff and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference First Team during her senior season. Porche put together a career mark of 59-48, with a 2.22 ERA and 744 strikeouts, while recording 17 saves and tossing 20 career shutouts. Porche also excelled in the classroom as she was twice named to the MVC Scholar Athlete team. A native of Buena Park, Calif., Porche earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Missouri State in 2008.

D.L. Phillips Softball Complex

Home of Niners Softball Since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2005, D.L. Phillips has become a treacherous place for Niner opponents to play at with the 49ers posting a winning record in each of the previous four seasons. Last season, Charlotte posted the third-most home victories with 21. Over the past four seasons, Charlotte is 57-30 at D.L. Phillips Complex good for a winning percentage of .655. This year, the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex will have a different feel to it for fans and players as stadium seating was put in behind home plate for improved viewing of the field. The stadium now features 300 total seats with a mixture of chair-back seats and metal bleachers with back support. The new seats will add to the atmosphere at D.L. Phillips, which hosted the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament when the 49ers reached the championship game. The softball complex also features bullpens, batting cages, a press box, a concessions stand as well as lighting allowing the Niners to play night games. The softball team’s locker room and coaches’ offices are located in Wachovia Fieldhouse, which overlooks the field. Each player has their own individual locker in the fieldhouse. www.Charlotte49ers.com

Charlotte 49ers Softball - 34th Season

2010 - T he Year Ahead

Charlotte Looks to Open New Decade in Style

2010 Niner Softball Season Preview Charlotte’s Media Relations Department sat down to talk with Head Coach Aimee DeVos to get her thoughts on the 2009 campaign, the season ahead, her returners, newcomers and why the program has been so successful in the Atlantic 10. Last season, Charlotte took home the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Runner-up title and barely missed out on the overall title. Looking back on the season what do you think was key to the success of that team? We proved to be very strong on the mound and that was led by Emily Jeffery in her record-breaking season. I think our offensive lineup became more balanced than it has in years past. We had several players contribute steadily to our offensive production which didn’t force the team to rely on two or three batters in the lineup and ultimately our team defense was the strongest it had been in years. With the recent renovations to D.L. Phillips Softball Complex, how do you think the atmosphere on gameday will change? The 49er Softball Stadium just completed one of the best makeovers this facility has ever seen. We have added bleacher-back and stadium seating directly behind home plate. We can now have all of our fans sit comfortably and support our team. We hope that by closing in the area between the two dugouts we can create more crowd noise and enthusiasm for our team. The fans truly have a firstclass facility to watch the Niners on game day. This year’s team is loaded with upper-classmen with four seniors and six juniors. Speak of the importance to have the experience of upper-classmen in the Atlantic 10 and the qualities that it brings to the team? Our upper-classmen will make up 80 percent of the starting lineup for 2010. Through my years of coaching I have come to truly value the veteran players. Their leadership and the on-the-field experience cannot be traded. As in the case of this year’s team, seven of the starting nine have been in the starting rotation for two to three years. Whitney Williams, Serena Smith, Keri Palma and Tenaya Tucker all return to the top-five spots in our batting order and we are looking to plug-in the remaining spot of our top-five batters with either of our other returners; Kendra McCall or Lorena Vela. This particular group of ten returners is hungry for an A-10 championship. On the other end of the spectrum you have brought six freshmen into the fray. What do you expect them to bring to the program individually and together? When we recruited our freshmen class we hit the road looking for infielders. This year’s freshmen class all play an infield position along with a couple who play outfield or pitch. As a group we look for these players to add infield depth and for them to contend for starting positions in all spots of the infield as we only have two returning infield starters. All of our freshmen have come from successful high schools or travel programs and we look to build upon their experience and skills as we continue to compete for the Atlantic 10 Championship. Gina Allen

Last year’s offense saw improvements in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage from 2008 to 2009. What do you expect from the offense line-up this season? We are excited about the potential of this year’s offensive line-up. Our top two-RBI producers; Serena and Tenaya are back and I think that Keri Palma will add to the RBI production for this year’s team. As I mentioned earlier we return four of our top five positions in the order with Whitney Williams looking to be the lead off, Serena Smith in the 3 hole, Tenaya Tucker in clean-up and Keri Palma behind her. Lorena Vela or Kendra McCall are potential number two hitters. Bri Gwaltney had a very strong fall and we look forward to the power she can bring to the offense this year. As in years past, our offense will focus on using their team speed to get runners into scoring position. I think our offense will be explosive and very consistent this year with many players sharing the offensive burden. Moving to the positions, behind the plate you return two players from last season. What do you expect from your catchers this year? The catching will be handled by Tenaya Tucker and Natalyn Blanton. Tenaya has been behind the plate for two years now and does an excellent job leading the defense and the pitchers. She is a tireless worker behind the plate. Nat has steadily been transitioning to the catcher position. We have seen vast improvement in her catching skills as she gets stronger and more comfortable in her new position each day. Tenaya Tucker

2010 Media Guide

2009 Atlantic 10 Regular Season Runner-up

Your outfield features some key returners from last season as well as some newcomers. How do you see this year’s outfielders shaping out? Whitney Williams, Serena Smith and Kendra McCall are all familiar faces to the 49er outfield. Serena and Whitney have been every-day starters since they joined the 49er program and Kendra has steadily put herself in the starting line for 2010. Each of them possesses great speed and awareness in the outfield. Serena, a truly gifted athlete, will anchor centerfield, while Whitney covers incredible ground in the outfield and Kendra who has a go all-out attitude for wherever the ball is. She will both play left and right field. Carol Buchan is the only other returning outfielder and has greatly improved her outfield skills. Nikki Gayle, a very Whitney Williams athletic and coachable newcomer to the outfield will push the starting three each day. You spoke earlier about the infield, expand more about them? Just like our softball facility, our infield has had a makeover. Keri Palma, our play-everywhere phenomenon, will move over to the left side of the infield at either third base or shortstop. Keri’s arm strength, instincts and pure athleticism are a great fit for either third or short. Lorena Vela, our other returning infielder, will move to second base along with freshman Chelsea Stamey. Lorena came to Charlotte as a middle infielder and stepped in to play third base for the us last year. We are excited to get Lorena back to the middle infield where she can anchor the right side. Chelsea, a solid fundamental infielder who gets better each day will add depth to the second base position. Brittney Brinkley, a freshman, is adjusting and settling in at shortstop. Her strengths are her range and quick feet. We have two freshmen who will be anchoring first base for the 49ers this year, Briana ‘Bri’ Gwaltney and Virginia ‘Ginny’ Prince. Bri who is a natural outfielder/shortstop will move her athleticism and talents to first base for the spring season. Ginny is a natural first baseman and we will look to her past experience to help this young infield mature. Also new to the infield is third base/pitcher Lindsey Holloman. Lindsey fits the mold at third with great reflexes and solid fundamentals. It will be important for our infield to gel together early in the season and continue that strong line of solid 49er defense.

Keri Palma

Charlotte returns a talented pitching staff for the 2010 season with Emily Jeffery, Katy Hackett and Gina Allen. Speak about what they bring to the team and your expectations for them. If there is one place on the field that we are excited to return experienced players, that is our pitching staff. Gina Allen, Emily Jeffery and Katy Hackett, all upper-classmen will also be joined by freshman Lindsey Holloman. Emily Jeffery proved to be the go-to pitcher for us last year and had an incredible season. She pushes herself every day to be even better this year. Gina Allen has made huge strides in the off-season and will look to be a starter or regular reliever in the rotation this year. No one on this team has worked harder than Gina Allen. Katy Hackett, unfortunately, had an injury-plagued season last year and had a difficult time being able to pitch at less than 100 percent. We will look for Katy to be a starter in the circle this year and give us a balanced pitching attack. Lindsey Holloman is continuing to develop as a collegiate pitcher and could see innings in relief for us. Overall thoughts on the non-conference schedule? Atlantic 10 schedule? As in years past we will continue with our solid non-conference schedule. We have strong regionally-ranked opponents in UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, University of South Carolina and Winthrop. Our tournaments will also bring in strong competition from the Big East, Conference USA and the America East Conference. The Atlantic 10 regular season is going to be a good one. Although we play one of our toughest opponents on the road we plan to be sitting in the top spot at the end of the year. With our offense and pitching back to full strength we expect nothing less than a championship from this year’s team. Since joining the A-10, Charlotte is 144-83 with a regular season title, regular season runner-up and a conference tournament runner-up. What do you think has been the key to success in the Atlantic 10 Conference? In the past four years, we have intensified our recruiting efforts and we have seen great changes in the support of our softball program. More players have been drawn to the success our program has shared. Our players have a higher expectation of their program due to the respect the A-10 and its opponents showed us from day one. We keep our goals simple; win, win or win. www.Charlotte49ers.com

2009 Season Recap

Charlotte 49ers Softball - 34th Season

2009 Season in Review Atlantic 10 Runner-Ups The 49ers capped another great season in the Atlantic 10 by finishing 14-4, their best mark since the 2006 championship season. The Niners lost only one conference road game and split the season series with A-10 Champion Massachusetts. Charlotte swept five series and split the other four to claim their first A-10 runner-up title, finishing only two games out of first.

White Tournament, Charlotte defeated UNC Greensboro in the championship game, 3-1, to win the season’s first title. One week later, the 49ers continued their tournament success by taking down Towson, 3-2, in the finals of the First Pitch Classic for their second championship in as many weeks. Junior pitcher Emily Jeffery led the Niners by recording four victories in the nine games.

2009 Seniors Cap of Career Charlotte’s senior class finished their career with a record of 144-83, which made them the most successful senior class in 49er history. Their 144 victories are 16 more than the second-best senior class, which coincidentally is the 2008 class. The collection of Cee Brooks, Alyssa Kemmerer, Sarah Malene, Jenny Rumbles and Jaime West had a winning season every year of their career finishing with a 33-16 record in 2009.

Same Old Broken Record One season after Katy Hackett broke the singleseason mark for strikeouts with 176 during her freshman campaign, Emily Jeffery extended the record by 118 punch-outs in the ‘09 season. Jeffery broke Hackett’s record on April 9 against Elon, when she struck out 14 Phoenix batters. The senior now sits at 440 career strikeouts only 144 behind the career mark, which is held by Kristen Bowen.

Brooks ended her career as the all-time leader in RBI with 113, third in runs (109) and home runs (17), fourth in hits (190) and doubles (38). Malene finished up with the most runs scored all-time (150) and stolen bases (87), while also achieving the tenth-best career batting average (.312) and ninth-most RBI (77). West wrapped up her career with the fourth most home runs (12), sixth-most doubles (29) and eighth-most RBI (78). Rumbles ended her career with her best season batting average (.296), including a .319 average in conference games, while also notching a career-high in hits with 34. Kemmerer completed her time at Charlotte by playing in 115 games and starting in 69 of those games.

Hits Galore Outfielder Serena Smith continued her dominating ways at the plate in 2009 with a .363 batting average including 62 hits, which is the seventh-most in a season. Four times last season, Smith recorded a five-game hitting streak or longer, which included a 10-game hitting streak that stretched from March 21 to April 4. She ended the season on a five-game hitting streak.

Protecting the Home Turf D.L. Phillips Softball Complex served as a treacherous place to play for opponents last season as the 49ers won 21 games at home, the third most in program history. Charlotte’s home victories included triumphs over then-No. 21 Massachusetts, South Carolina, Pittsburgh and Seton Hall. In conference home games, the Niners went 7-3 with sweeps over Rhode Island and Fordham. The 49ers went 14-7 in non-conference games at the confines of D.L. Phillips. Two-Time Tournament Champions Early in the season, Charlotte hosted a pair of non-conference tournaments; the Green and White Tournament and the First Pitch Classic. The Niners posted a 4-1 record in both of the tournaments to claim the top honors in the early-season tournaments. In the Green and

Serena Smith Double-Digit Hit Production The 2009 season saw the Charlotte offense produce 15 double-digit hit games with the high coming against Saint Francis on February 20. In that game, the Niners registered 21 base hits, a program record, with 10 different 49ers recording a hit. Overall, Charlotte was 12-3 in those games, while outscoring its opponents by 49 total runs. Steppin’ It Up for the A-10 When the season began on March 20 with a 2010 Media Guide

doubleheader against George Washington, several 49ers kicked their production into a higher gear. Eight 49ers amped up their batting averages during conference games while the overall team average jumped from .272 in non-conference games to .297 in A-10 games. Serena Smith and Jenny Rumbles saw the biggest jumps in their averages as Smith’s improved from .315 to .444, while Rumbles’ increased from .279 to .319.

Jenny Rumbles Not only did the offense improve when the games really counted, the pitching staff also stepped up its game. Gina Allen, Emily Jeffery and Katy Hackett all improved their ERA or stayed the same. The overall staff ERA dipped from a 2.91 in non-conference to 1.72 against the A-10. Jeffery’s ERA dropped below one as the junior held a 0.88 ERA for 18 conference games, while Hackett won five of her six conference decisions. Home Run Battle Power hitters Keri Palma and Jaime West were in a battle all season for the title for most home runs last year. Palma came out victorious by edging West by one home run, 5-4. The duo both hit home runs in the final series of the season against Dayton as Palma went deep in the series opener, while West crushed one in the series finale. Palma also added home runs in back-to-back games in a doubleheader against USC Upstate. To go along with their home run power, West led the team in doubles with 12, while Palma was tied for the lead in triples. Swiping Bases Left and Right Sarah Malene tore up the base paths last season as she set the single season and the all-time stolen base records. Malene stole 36 out of 41 bases last year to pass the previous record of 30. Her 36 base swipes moved her to 87 career stolen bases, passing Trisha Fox’s record of 77.

Atlantic 10 Conference

Charlotte 49ers Softball - 34th Season

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,162 studentathletes in the Fall 2008 while 1,164 were named to the Spring 2009 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and hon2009 Atlantic 10 Final Standings Team Conference Massachusetts 16-2 Charlotte 14-4 Saint Louis 12-6 Fordham 13-7 Saint Joseph’s 9-7 St. Bonaventure 9-11 Temple 6-8 Dayton 7-13 La Salle 7-13 George Washington 6-14 Rhode Island 3-17

ors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified studentathletes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte’s Lamarra Currie, Christa Dominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure’s Katelyn Murray and David Zenk of George Washington received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teams among the 767 Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. This represents an increase of 16 teams from a year ago and ranked the league fifth among 31 Division I Conferences. In 19 of the 21 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, the league’s APR was at or above the conference average nationally according to the most recent data released by the NCAA. Moreover, 75 A-10 teams attained a perfect score in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate Report. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.
