Green Moving Tips
Earth-Friendly Ways to Move By Tim Johnson
When you hear the term “green moving,” it might conjure up images of packing your things in large bamboo leaves and hiring a team of non-CO2-emitting Sherpas to carry them across town. In actuality, green moving means being conscientious of our environment and employing methods that are not harmful to the earth. Green moving is a growing trend in the moving industry. It involves tweaking practices that have historically been big on waste such as throwing away cardboard boxes and bubble wrap or moving your belongings in smoke-belching semi trucks. Earth-friendly moving means scaling back a bit. Granted, the green theme has permeated many industries. Traditionally non-green industries such as automotive, energy and housing are now embracing new business practices that take into account short- and long-term effects on the environment. Likewise, green moving has gained in popularity, moving the demand for green moving into a prominent position.

Green Moving Tips • This seems obvious, but don’t accumulate as much stuff in the first place. Less is generally better for the planet anyway, and the less stuff you move, the less gas your moving truck will burn. Green moving can also translate into more “green” for you because you’ll likely spend less to move your household. • Get rid of stuff before you move it. Consider holding a garage sale, or selling your unnecessary items online at eBay or through Craigslist. • Buy used cardboard boxes. Moving companies generally prefer that customers use new cardboard boxes to ensure stability, which means a lot of cardboard boxes get tossed after only one use. If using cardboard boxes, look for boxes made of recycled material. • Rent moving boxes. When packing, take advantage of companies that offer reusable packing crates, which can eliminate

that waste. One such outfit that rents sturdy packing crates made of recycled plastic bottles is California-based Earth Friendly Moving. The company drops off the crates before you move and picks them up afterward in its fleet of bio-diesel trucks. Another company is Rent-A-Crate, a nationwide firm that offers moving crates made of recyclable high density polypropylene. • Cut back on the bubble wrap. You can use old newspapers for non-fragile items, or even old sheets or towels as packing material. These weigh more and don’t offer as much benefit as the lighter bubble wrap, but anything you can do to cut back helps. • Look for environmentally-friendly cleaning products when moving out. Seventh Generation is a national brand of cleaning products that makes toilet bowl cleaners, dishwashing powder and carpet cleaners. These products can be found at many large discount chains such as Target. • Hire moving companies that tout environmentally friendly attributes. One such firm is Go Green Moving, which owns bio-diesel trucks, uses moving pads made of 100% recycled cotton and rents packing crates. • Ask that a company employ eco-friendly practices, especially if it doesn’t. If moving companies believe that consumers
are demanding environmentally friendly moves, the moving industry will feel obligated to adopt green moving methods. Green Tips After Moving Into Your New Home Finally, after you’ve moved in to your new home, it’s a good time to think about other ways you can leave less of an environmental footprint. • You can stop junk mail by registering with the Mail Preference Service at the Direct Marketing Association. It won’t stop all the stuff you get daily in your mail, but it will help to reduce a large portion of unwanted paper. • Set up a recycling center in your new kitchen where it’s easy and handy to separate paper from plastic recyclables. Making recycling easy to do ensures that you’ll be more likely to do it. • Think before buying. When shopping for a non-essential item, ask yourself a simple question: When the times comes to move again, will you relish the idea of moving it? • Reduce the possessions you own by recycling or donating an item when you bring a similar item into your home. Follow these winning tips for adding a screened porch to your home

Planning a screened porch? Think about all the different ways you’ll use it, in different seasons, but also pay attention to tiny details. That’s the winning formula used by remodeler Mike DiFabion and homeowner Amy Myers to create the porch on Myers’ home in Providence Plantation. The project won the top honors last fall in the porch category in the annual remodeling contest hosted by the Charlotte chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. If you plan to add a screened porch to your house this season, you’ll probably want to consider their helpful advice.

Amy Myers says she and her husband, Brian, knew they wanted a covered but open area as well as a screened porch. But they didn’t have a clear vision of what the finished porch would look like, or how it would be fitted to the house. That was a good thing, because attaching the porch to the house required some creative problem solving. The porch roof couldn’t come directly off the two-story brick house, because upstairs windows got in the way. Mike DiFabion and his son, Michael, turned a breakfast room window into a door, and then designed a short, narrow roof out from the new door. The short roof connects to the new porch, which is basically a free-standing structure. That innovative solution helped earn the NARI honors. Details helped, too. For instance, Amy Myers worked closely with the concrete contractor, designing a color and pattern that was to her liking. The results, she says, were worth the extra time and attention. If you’re considering a screened porch, Myers’ best advice is to take the time to find the right contractor. “That’s No. 1,” she says. “Find someone you feel like you can talk to. We did make changes as we went along, as anybody would, and you want to be able to talk them through.” What about cost? Architects and contractors say a nice porch with solid foundation and new roof won’t cost much less than a bedroom addition of the same size. And it can even cost more if you splurge on expensive stone and an outdoor kitchen. Mike DiFabion says you can expect to pay $70 to $80 per square foot for a basic design, up to $120 or more for a porch comparable to the winning project. April 2014 | 17

PORCH TIPS If you’re going ahead with the project, consider these tips from the DiFabions, of DiFabion Remodeling in Indian Trail:

No, you probably can’t just add a roof over your deck and screen it in. Most of the time, the deck’s supports won’t handle the added structure. Mike DiFabion says there’s an important distinction between a screened, covered deck and a more substantial “screened room addition” like the Myers’.

n Where should your new screened porch go? If you have an existing deck, you tend to think that’s where it belongs. But, maybe not. A more proper question is, where do you live in your house? “Usually that’s the kitchen or the family room,” Mike DiFabion says. “If so, we make sure to integrate the porch with that space.” The other crucial issue is whether the porch will block natural light. “Sometimes the location is shifted to allow in more light,” DiFabion said.

porch’s size depends on how you plan to use it. For just sitting and reading the paper with coffee, you might get by with 12 by 12 feet. “Quite a few of the ones we build are a little larger than that, or 16 by 16,” says Johns of Advanced Renovations. The depth of the porch - how far the outer edge is from the house - is important for traffic flow and air circulation. That should never be less than 10 or 12 feet, and more is better.
what porch access will do to indoor traffic patterns. Access from a breakfast room, for instance, can take up lots of space in an already crowded area. There are some solutions. For instance, you can change a door that swings inward to an out-swinging style. If you’re going to add a screened porch, you won’t need a screen door there. Or, consider a high-quality sliding door. “You can find beautiful doors that look like French doors, except they glide,” DiFabion says. On the winning porch, DiFabion converted a breakfast-room window to a door that swings outward.

Duane Johns, owner of Advanced Renovations and also an award-winning remodeler, agrees with the DiFabions on the most popular material: tongue-and-groove beadboard.

and DiFabion recommend a hard floor, such as stone, tile or the Myers’ stamped concrete, instead of decking. If you choose stamped concrete, be sure to select a pattern that’s smooth enough to accommodate furniture and accessories. If you do use decking, choose treated lumber or cedar over the newer composites – DiFabion prefers the natural look of wood.

A BEAUTIFUL FRONT DOOR SETS THE TONE FOR THE ENTIRE HOUSE STORY BY ALLEN NORWOOD

Architects say that front doors prove the old adage that you get only one chance to make a first impression. A bright, well-tended door says, “Come on in.” A faded, neglected door says, “Go away.” Whatever the size and style of the house, whatever the cost of the door, those messages are clear. If done thoughtfully, the front door complements the architecture and sets the tone for the entire house. It doesn’t do that job by itself, though. While the door is the centerpiece, the entire facade is important. The glass above and beside the door, the lighting, the porch and its railings, even the greenery lining the front walk need to complement the door. All of those things help the door say, “Welcome.” “I think a door is like a party invitation,” says Pat Rodgers, whose husband personally designed doors for their last three houses. “When you get an invitation, you can tell what kind of party it’s going
Debbie and Jim Fink bought a traditional brick house and, seeing possibilities others had missed, transformed it. And the door was crucial to their vision. They painted the brick exterior, to provide Low country cottage appeal. Before deciding what to do about the door they studied lots of pictures, and drove through neighborhoods looking at doors on other homes. Which were their favorites? Why? They replaced the single door with double doors, then painted the doors and the antique shutters vivid blue. To tone the blue down a bit, and add the patina of age, they glazed the blue with a hint of dark brown. The painted doors are more in keeping with the new look of the house, Debbie Fink says. And the glaze helps ensure that they won’t tire of the blue, as they might have with a brighter color. Debbie Fink credits her husband with so much time and attention spent on the door. “He felt like it would make a big impact,” she says. “And the neighbors agree: It has.”

The front door should set the tone for everything else about a house – and no door better exemplifies that than this massive, sculptural creation. The double doors are 3 ½ inches thick, crafted of tongue-and-groove mahogany planks with a clear finish like fine furniture. And the two doors are curved to complement the circular shape of the large foyer. Even the glass above the door is curved. Architect Harry Schrader, who designed the house, paid careful attention to every small detail. He designed the lighting, the cabinetry, the hardware throughout. The entry was no exception. “The doors are a series of bent planks,” he says. “We went to a custom shop in Greensboro.” The stainless steel handles and hinges were made in a machine shop. The result is beautiful, and that attention paid off in other ways. The doors swing smoothly and fit tightly, even after eight years.
Look closely at the mahogany door with wide sidelights on Peter and Cindy Levinson’s house – look again and perhaps squint a bit – and you’ll see the stylized “L” representing their last name. It’s there in the glass, in what looks at first glance like a random geometric pattern. What’s more, the colored panels amid the clear glass represent members of the family. The colors are lilac, pink, raspberry and a golden yellow. Architect Stan Russell, who designed the door when he helped the Levinsons rebuild their home, asked each to pick a color. Peter and Cindy Levinson, along with daughters Jill, 16, and Sophie, 13, each chose a favorite hue. Which is which? Well... “I might be hard pressed to figure whose was which,” Cindy Levinson says with a laugh. “But it’s beautiful.”

The double front door of this house in Foxcroft has a secret. Look closely, and see if you can spot it. Oh, the doors are stunning. You can’t miss the brightly colored panels around the door. And the inset glass panels reach all the way to the edge of each steel door. You don’t often see that. But look again. The right door is larger than the one on the left, says Toby Witte with Dialect Design, who helped the owners complete an ambitious remodeling of the one-story house. The difference is unique, and turned out to be a great way to handle one issue in the renovation. Behind these doors, a staircase on the right rises to the attic. Making the right door larger was an innovative way to hide the base of the stairs. It’s functional – and fun. And the house remains so true to its original design that it was to be featured on the Mid-Century Modern Tour hosted by Historic Charlotte.
B.D. Rodgers helps design the front doors for homes he shares with his wife, Pat Rodgers. He’s a stickler. He collects contemporary sculpture, and wants the door to welcome guests, fit comfortably into the architecture and complement his favorite artworks. That’s a lot to ask of a door, but the stunning glass and copper door on their current home delivers. To create this door and sidelights, as with previous doors, Rodgers worked closely with Ellie Knight at Shed Brand Studios. The glass pattern is one-of-akind. The glass is thicker than normal, and was melted and shaped by Shed Brand. The caming, or metal between the glass pieces, is wide copper instead of narrow lead as in the typical cut-glass door or window. That makes the metal as important as the glass to the artistry of the door. And the combination of glass and copper perfectly complements the glass, bronze and stainless steel sculpture, Rodgers says. “The door lets the light come in from the front, all the way through the house. There’s a nice pattern of light... and it blends with the art inside the home.” April 2014 | 31

When Caele Gambs and her husband, Richard, bought their home in Cameron Wood, one of her first projects was painting the front door and storm door. The doors were blue, like the shutters. Now they’re vivid red. “The color is Pompeii red, like the town that got buried,” she says, referring to the city near Naples, Italy. She also lived for a while in Japan, where red is an important color culturally. It’s considered very welcoming. Also, she loves it. The front door and its surroundings are the first things visitors see, she says. That’s why she touches up the paint on the door regularly, and spends lots of time on the flowers and shrubs. She updated the brass door hardware, too. “That’s like jewelry for your door.”

The white double doors on the Leaf family’s home in Dilworth are original to the house, which was built in 1924. The doors are mostly glass. They’re arched, and mimic the arch in the brick off the front porch. Chip Leaf, an architect, says the doors were probably unusual for their day – and still are. “There was a different level of craftsmanship then, with the curved wood and curved glass.” The glass is original, too, and its imperfections refract the morning sun and dapple the room with changing shapes and shadows. Like other homeowners, Leaf likes the way the doors fill the interior with light. But light travels from the inside to the outside, too. You’ll appreciate what that means if you’ll notice your favorite front doors after dusk. When golden light spills out, it creates a welcoming beacon in the darkness.
Beverly Spainhour and her husband, Sterling, wanted a door that could stand up to the strong afternoon sun, yet still look warm and welcoming. She found exactly what she was looking for with this metal door by Clark Hall. Her designer, Gary Mathis, helped with the decorator touches – from the door’s curved top, to the adaptation of a fleur-de-lis design in the side glass windows. Spainhour hopes visitors get “a warm feeling when they look at the front of our home – I hope a welcoming feeling.” And she loves how the door stands on its own. “We feel the door is decorated as much as we want it to be,” Spainhour says. “It’s for all seasons. It’s just perfect.”

Les Ackerman recently added a full view glass storm door to his home in Park Crossing. It’s painted crisp black, matching the six-panel wood door behind it. It’s a simple and functional combination that, combined with other elements, makes it one of the most eye-catching doors on a street of striking doors. “I replaced a very traditional aluminum storm door,” Ackerman says. “I have two Jack Russell terriers – one is 14 years old – and they can look out front. It’s perfect.” Ackerman didn’t stop with the new storm door, though. He restored the railings and repainted them bright white. He replaced the brass kick plate. He added glazed ceramic pots with topiaries and trailing vines. The leaded glass over the door is even more appealing, he said, now that other elements have been refurbished. From the street, the entire setting is very traditional and very welcoming. “It’s good to hear that,” he says. “That’s exactly how I feel, and how the house feels.” The bonus? Ackerman and his guests are using the front door more, now that it looks its best.

Having lived at Lake Norman since 2007 – first in Mooresville and for the past year in Davidson – I’ve gotten to know the area quite well. The area is vibrant, diverse and quirky, and
I’m so glad that my family and I are a part of it, especially now that we have a 4-year-old
daughter. But as much as I’ve embraced Lake
Norman as home, I was a bit late in discovering all its charms.
I moved to Charlotte in the early ’80s, just as

That attitude changed when I got married and
started looking for a place to start a family – a
place with affordable homes, good schools, and plenty of modern conveniences. By then, Lake
Norman had come to fit that bill, and the area’s population was skyrocketing.
We first settled in a bungalow about a block
away from historic downtown Mooresville, and immediately sensed a subtle but distinct shift in daily life. While Lake Norman certainly has its
share of congestion and stressors, the pace feels less hurried and more welcoming.
That vibe was evident strolling through our
neighborhood as families sitting on their front porches waved or stopped to chat. It was also
evident while visiting the area’s many restaurants, shops and bars where – and I think this
is one of the most interesting aspects of Lake

Charlotte in the New South: RESTLESS REINVENTION

Look at Charlotte and you might think it’s all brand-new. But look close and there’s history here to see. Charlotte came to life as a tiny courthouse town in 1768, named for England’s Queen Charlotte. A Revolutionary War battle raged along its main Tryon Street in 1789; British General Cornwallis is said to have called the town a “hornet’s nest of rebellion.” A boy named Conrad Reed discovered North America’s first gold nearby in 1799, but Charlotte’s gold economy dwindled after the 1849 California Gold Rush. Civil War battles bypassed us, leaving the town’s rails intact. At the same time, the end of slavery wiped out plantations in other parts of Dixie. Soon, leaders here were building what they called a “New South,” and by the 1920s the Carolinas led the nation in cotton manufacturing. Myers Park – gracious greenways and curving, oak-shaded streets – was laid out in 1911 for mill owners and bankers. Lake Wylie began as a hydroelectric project of James B. Duke, who sold power to textile companies. NASCAR ran its first stock car race here in 1949, knowing that mill hands had money jingling in their pockets on weekends. Even our banks – the crown of Charlotte’s skyline – sprang from textile money. Wells Fargo’s Charlotte presence rests on First Union, founded by a cotton broker. Rival North Carolina National Bank became so adept at putting branches in far-flung Carolina cotton towns that in 1982 its leader, Hugh McColl, figured out how to buy an out-of-state bank. This triggered America’s shift to interstate banking, and McColl’s Bank of America became the nation’s first coast-to-coast bank in 1998.

And you can still see reminders of the cotton boom today, in the Charlotte arts district known as NoDa (for North Davidson Street), in parts of the villages of Pineville and Cornelius, Kannapolis and Belmont, Mount Holly and Gastonia. Big brick mill buildings, turned to fresh uses, brood like mother hens over rows of look-alike cottages. If you know where to look, you can find history celebrated. A hornet’s nest is the civic symbol emblazoned on Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police cars, and both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have councils named after hornets’ nests. You can pan for gold at the Reed Gold Mine in nearby Midland, and you can see the reconstructed 1837 U.S. Mint that forms the rear of the original Mint Museum of Art out Randolph Road. But Charlotte seems more excited about whatever is coming next. Mecklenburg County has doubled in size since 1990, from half a million to almost a million residents. People are flooding in from across the U.S. and around the world. You can taste this newest New South on older suburban streets such as Central Avenue, where a Mexican tienda, a Somali restaurant, a Salvadoran papusa joint, a Lebanese bakery and a Vietnamese soup parlor mingle on the same block.
