Welcome to the ICM Challenge publication
I am delighted to have created this publication of a recent ICM challenge encompassing eleven different themes. ICM or to give it its full name Intentional Camera Movement, is a technique (or as I like to think of it) a process, that has grown massively in popularity over the last 5 years. It is a way in which photographers have been working for far longer than this though, with it being pioneered by film photographers such as Ernst Haas back in the 1960s. I was first introduced to it over six years ago, and immediately fell in love, and it became an integral way in which I portray a location in my images.
I use many descriptive terms to try and explain what ICM brings to my images, but to try and explain it best; ICM allows me freedom to experiment, play, explore and express not only what I see, but what I feel physically and mentally and hear – using all my senses. My ICM images have a feeling of movement, and emotion, that I could never bring to a static image.
In its simplest form, ICM is the movement of the camera, whilst the shutter remains open. Thus, any movement made while the photo is taken is represented in the resulting image. However, it is far more than wiggling your camera or making blurry images! The most immersive and intriguing ICM images for me, are those that express the photographer’s intention, emotion or feeling. They normally have a narrative or guide you in the image to understand it using light, lines and focus points. You may not of course be aware of these when you look at the image initially, but take a moment to study an image that captures your eye or imagination, and you will realise each image that makes you stop and look a little longer has been curated with love and care and passion, and this is no accident.
If you enjoy the images in this publication, why not have a go at ICM yourself, if you haven’t already. It requires only a camera which you can control the shutter speed with. There are even ICM phone apps available.
The idea behind the ICM Challenge
This ICM challenge was created, to offer a friendly competition within the creative group I run for all previous course attendees and mentee students. It was to encourage interaction in the group and to offer a reason to share or make photos in reaction to a prompt. From mid-July to early December, a new challenge subject was set in the group. Each prompt was open to an individual’s own interpretation, but the ICM technique should be the overriding element in the image.
11 wonderful photographers who I admire, supported me, with this challenge, as independent judges for each challenge. This offered a wide variety of feedback and varying outlooks on ICM photography, and a wonderful exposure to the group to alternative ICM creativity than mine alone.
The competition was run over 11 challenges. Each challenge was set for 2 weeks. Submissions were made in the creative FB group and creativity and expression was encouraged over technical perfection.
This was a cumulative competition:
• Points 1-10 were awarded for the top 10 placings each challenge. (1st place gaining 10 and 10 th place 1)
• A point was awarded to every entrant to say thank you for submitting.
• A bonus 5 points were awarded to each of Charlie’s top 5 each challenge.
The whole idea of a fun challenge has grown and morphed into something much greater with the help of the judges who have supported me.
In total 45 individuals have taken part in this challenge. They are based all over the world including England, Scotland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, America, Canada, Spain, Israel, and South Africa (apologies if I have forgotten your location)
I am delighted with the commitment and involvement so many in the group have shown to the challenge. Some set themselves the goal to enter every challenge and I’m delighted and surprised that 12 individuals managed this – no mean feat, given the subjects I set and that this required determination and dedication.
Some chose to photograph specifically for the challenge, using it as a personal challenge to get their cameras out and give a wide range of ICM genres a go. Others raided their back catalogue.
The judges
A massive thank you to all the individuals who have judged the challenges for me – offering an independent eye and a valuable opinion on each challenge. I’m more than just a bit proud of the line-up, and delighted that when approached, each and every one of them offered to support the challenge without hesitation.

Charlie’s pick 5
Each challenge, in addition to the official judge’s scores, I also chose 5 of my favourites from each challenge. Sometimes my choices matched with the judges, other times they did not. The following are my choices from each challenge – plus a winner from each challenge and a final favourite 3 from the whole challenge. The Favourite of each challenge and the favourite 3 I picked after I knew the judge’s winners, and were picked deliberately to be different from the judges choice.
My favourite 3 of the challenge – No specific order
