Scotland – you have a little piece of my heart
As is so often the way, you need to have restricted access to something, to realise how important it is in your life – take Tunnocks wafers and Ambrosia Devon custard as just two examples! For those of you who are not from the UK – these are two rather sweet treats, that I just cannot buy this side of the water, and stock up on manically on every return visit to the UK. Food however, is not the only thing I miss about living away from my ‘home’ land.
Believe it or not, at the age of 46, I had, until just a few weeks ago, only visited mainland Scotland for a total of 5 days in my whole life. It took me to move away from the UK, to take a holiday there! I’ve had a yearning to revisit ever since I first experienced Harris and Lewis around 7 years ago, and she did not disappoint. I’ve just returned from the most marvellous 10 days, combining some much deserved ‘me’ photographic time with workshop teaching.
I had no idea that Scotland was so diverse in its landscape. Of course, I knew there were mountains and lochs, but the drive from Inverness to Edinburgh opened my eyes to such a diverse range of mountains – pointy ones and round ones, craggy ones and ones I could not see the tops of! The lochs, some so massive I could not see the other side, to those intimate reflecting puddles. I definitely need a return trip!
One thing I was amazed by was the beauty of it all – so stunning and awe inspiring – I couldn’t help myself but take some more ‘record’ style shots of what took my breath away when I arrived at some of the locations.
One of the stunning lochs on my drive from Inverness to the Isle of SkyeI’m still wading through the 4000 images I created. Living every moment that I made each one, enjoying working and editing the images to reflect not only the beauty of the locations, but also the emotions and feelings I experienced while taking this time to reinvigorate my body and soul.
Should you ever be blessed to visit, my best tip would be to not try and fit too much in to your time – allow yourself the chance to enjoy what is on the doorstep of your overnight location. Seek out places to stay in the middle of nowhere and you will be rewarded with peace, tranquility and the friendliest of hosts (well maybe not the great big highland bulls you find in the dark on a tiny road to go and get dinner!)
How can you not be inspired when you have this at breakfast from the lounge window! The amazing lounge at The Barley House B&B and my challenge on the way to get fish and chips! (Phone photos)These are just o few of the ICM images I am working on from my time in Scotland – lots more to come! My aim with all of these was to portray the open, wild beauty of the locations. The colours and the forms of the earth meeting the sky. And of course, the effect of the weather on this beautiful landscape.
As day turns to dusk
A quiet silence falls
The rhythm of the waves lap
The distant mountains soften Blues and greys mingle with orange
The last light fades
A chill in the air tickles
This day closes Tomorrow beckons
Floating bodies of land through the mist A fleeting kiss of sun illuminates Through the rain, beauty glimpsed The end of the loch draws meFor the rest of the newsletter I have provided you with a couple of useful articles –visualizing multiple exposures and getting creative regardless of the weather. In addition, an update on all the in person and online workshop opportunities I have in the diary so far. And a small report on my Creative retreat here in Holland that I held at the start of November, and what ‘group mentoring’ sessions deliver.
I’ve added all my up to date workshop dates for 2023 so far, so with Christmas coming, why not add one of the workshops to your wish list, and let someone know! Gift vouchers in any amount are also available to put towards courses or 1:1 mentoring.
As ever, if you find this newsletter of no interest, please let me know and I will take you off the mailing list. But if you love it – please do share the link, I’d love as many people to enjoy my work and the little articles I share.
Enjoy this newsletter, hopefully a balanced blend of lovely images and useful information. Enjoy your photography

Personal project mentoring group ****NEW for 2023****
New for 2023 I would like to introduce a new concept idea for group mentoring. This one is for anyone who would like to create/follow a personal project in 2023 with the support of a close group and me to guide you on the journey.
This is a bit different because although it is a course, I would rather call it a group experience, because it is going to be spread over the whole of 2023. Once each month I will gather the group for a presentation or discussion, each of which will help to guide you through creating and following and committing to a project. It can be absolutely anything from ICM or multiple exposures through to portraits, mixed media or combining writing and images.
There will be 10 places available for this group.
The group meetings will happen on the second Monday of each month and will be 2-hour sessions at 8pm Dutch time.
Some meetings I will present on a subject relevant to project creation and development, other meetings I will ask you to present your projects and your experiences. This experience will require a bit of self-motivation, but I will be there to encourage and help. I will provide tools and knowledge so you can work through a project gently in 2023 and fit it around your life, rather than making it too demanding. I believe each and every one has the ability to create wonderful bodies of work, sometimes we just need a little bit of support and someone to be accou ntable to! If this sounds like your thing, do not hesitate to get in touch.
The cost for the 12 sessions is 165 euros. (inc VAT)
A reminder of the little extra bonus to signing up for any of my courses
Many of you have already completed a course with me, and have enjoyed the bonus of the creative community group I have set up on Facebook for the sharing and feedback of images. Once every few months I also run a free critique session where everyone and anyone in the group is welcome to submit an image (need not be ICM), and we spend the evening discussing the positives and possible improvements that could be made to elevate the images further. A great way to keep in touch with previous class mates, see work from other individuals and hear how images can be improved with just the tiniest of tweaks.
Once you have completed a course you will receive an invite to the group – completely closed and private and only accessible to previous course members or mentor students.
Individual mentoring opportunities
And finally – If none of these courses fit your personal needs, one to one mentoring might fit you well. In a closed and secure environment, we can discuss absolutely anything that will help you develop your photographic journey during a 1:1 mentoring session. If you would like help with finding your mojo, taking the plunge into a photographic career, organising an exhibition, creating a book or just some critique on your images, I can help you, and would be delighted to work with you to further your photographic journey.
The cost for an hour’s mentoring is 65 euros
For a saving per session - You can book 3 mentoring sessions for 188 euros euros or 5 for 300 euros
Booking for 3 or 5 sessions must be used within 12 months of purchase. (all prices inc. VAT)
Recently I write an article for Digital Photographer magazine – which you can see on the next page. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to get in touch. charlotte@charlottebellamy.com

Please note I am now required to include VAT in my online courses and in person courses here in Netherlands. I wish I did not have to, but the threshold for small businesses here in The Netherlands is low. I have enjoyed a short time when charging VAT was not necessary, but now I am enjoying being busy, the tax man also gets to enjoy this. The costs you see on my website are now inclusive VAT. Many thanks to all of you who have already supported me in this change of pricing.
ICM and multiple exposures – visualizing
One of the most regularly asked questions, is how I envisage my multiple exposure compositions. Its one of those things that probably happens without me thinking these days, as it is such a natural part of my photographic process after 7 years. But hopefully I can demystify a few of the ideas and concepts for you, using a couple of examples. Following I have two examples, where I talk you through what I saw and my thought process to the final multiple exposure images I created. These are a good representation of the journey my mind and creativity go on when I make multiple exposure ICM images.
A golden fern in the shadow of the loch
What did I see? From the image above, you can see, exactly what I saw as I was returning to my car, having photographed a massive loch and the mountains around it. Maybe that is why my eye fell on the tiny yellow fern. Almost inconspicuous in the landscape – but so beautiful. So, my creative process – was to first to notice. Then to stop. Then to ask why I had stopped, what was it that had captured my eye? In this case it was the beautiful bright golden yellow, slightly curled fronds of the fern. It was a tiny jewel in a massive landscape. I think I was a little tired, so I had lowered my eyes as I was walking back to the car, so it was in my line of sight perfectly. When I looked closer I noticed that if I looked at it from above at a certain angle, the beautiful blue of the loch behind formed the most stunning contrast to the fern in the foreground. I love blue and gold, they are a match made in heaven colourwise for me.
I had photographed ferns in the previous couple of days, and had figured out that I loved a slightly twisted ICM movement to make the ferns dance and become dainty, so this was what was in my mind when I made the 1st ICM image
I then decided to make a still image – as in my mind I had decided that for this multiple exposure I wanted to combine the softness and movement of the ICM with the beautiful original forms and vibrant colours of what I had originally seen.
Back in Photoshop, I brought these two images together with an idea of combining the soft movement with the vibrant detail.
This was my first combination – I tried to fill the frame and overlay the sharp image over the soft. This required me to rotate the sharp image a little and enlarge it over the soft ICM image.
This was my second combination. This time, I just laid the two images directly on top of each other and then experimented with various blend modes. In both cases I used the ‘lighten’ blend mode at between 50-70%. With the ICM image being my base layer and the sharp image the one I experimented with opacity and placement.
What did I see? Sometimes what I see in one location, is just too much for one image. At these times, I think using multiple exposures to create one image which encompasses the whole location is a perfect solution. As I stood next to a rushing waterfall, my eye actually fell on the intricate white branches of this beautiful birch tree. How it was like a fan appearing out from the bracken with the mountainside in the background. This image of course shows this, but I feel that the tree is getting lost in the busyness of the scene. I was also drawn to the angular edges of the landscape that towered above me, but in 180 degrees the opposite direction to the beautiful birch tree. So, I captured both using ICM and brought them together to create my own interpretation of the location as I stood there.
Too much for one image!
These two ICM images were made to represent the different elements I noticed around me. I used a small upwards movement to accentuate the silver branches that drew me to the birch tree. I use a gentle rolling movement to capture the hill side and mountain top above me.

Creative autumn retreat – Netherlands
For the second time, I ran a creative autumn retreat here in Holland this autumn. Five lovely ladies joined me for five days of creative inspiration and experimentation. Boundaries were pushed, friendships made, wonderful photographic locations visited and of course lots of cake (and some ice cream…yes even in November) were eaten!
The aim of the retreat has always been to encourage creativity. With that in mind, mornings are dedicated to photography, with creative exercises intertwined. Then the afternoons are dedicated to creative learning and experimentation back at my farmhouse. We were so lucky with the weather, in fact the promised wood burning fire in the lounge in the afternoons only got lit the last afternoon for the ambience, not because we were cold.
Each day we started in the woods with a mindful exercise to develop the awareness of the surroundings, which is quite a challenge when you just want to get your camera out and get going. We were successful nearly every day – but on our last woodland outing I happened to turn around to see where the group was, and was greeted with the most amazing mist and morning sun on a beautiful beech tree. Needless to say, the mindful moment just had to wait that morning!
With the group we explored the creation of projects, writing artists statements, ICM, Multiple exposure photography and editing and the process of deciding which images to work with and edit. I like most people struggle with the daunting challenge of deciding which images to work with when I have so many to choose from, but sometimes an image will just call to you, like this one from a woodland puddle!
The Speulderbos of dancing trees once again did not disappoint - with a little bit of mist and the sun streaming through the canopy, the group had a wonderful experience of this location.
A couple of the group developed a project idea at the start of the retreat which they used to direct some of their photographic endeavors. Others were just very proud of themselves for trying something new, but everyone went away with a renewed enthusiasm for creativity.
In 2023 I will be running a Deep Dive ‘on location’ ICM workshop here in Holland the last week in September. If you are looking for a small group experience with lots of 1:1 tuition during the week during the photographic assignments and post production do get in touch. With only 6 spaces available, it will be a lovely small group experience.
Some of the lovely individuals who joined me, have kindly shared a few words and a chosen image from the retreat. I don’t often make a big deal out of reviews, but it’s so lovely to see all these in one place together, I thought I’d share in case anyone is doubting the positive benefits of joining on a course with me xx
Thank you Charlie, for creating such an enjoyable creative retreat. The woodland locations were inspiring and you supported me to take risks in my photography. The afternoons in your home (with cake!) provided a nurturing space for us all where we could benefit from your expertise. I learnt so much too from the other members of the group who were so generous with sharing their photographic experiences. I have come away with a lot of new ideas to try in the dark winter months ahead! I chose this image from the 1300+ that I took as it reminds me of the sunlight dancing in the trees and how that lifted my soul. with best wishes Valerie
The Creative Landscape Experience is well balanced with time to photograph, learn new skills, gain new perspectives and reflect on what I wanted next in my photographic journey with strong guidance in my thinking from Charlie. Right from the beginning I felt that Charlie’s focus was on helping me to achieve what I wanted from the experience. Her friendly, relaxed, personalised approach towards all participants helped everyone interact in such a supportive manner and I feel I have found some like-minded friends. I thoroughly recommend this experience as I have learnt so much and had time to reflect and play despite it being a very busy schedule. And of course, the food - I am gluten and dairy intolerant and yet Charlie made sure there was always scrumptious options for me. A fabulous few days that went too quickly!
Margaret
I booked my place onto the workshop 3 years before I managed to finally make it to Holland. I was not disappointed and the guidance, support and encouragement from Charlotte had me stepping out of my comfort zone on more than one occasion! I had a brilliant time and came home feeling a little pleased with myself for even having a go and surprising myself at the results. The group were also supportive and fun to be with so I hope I meet them all again on another workshop in the future.
Lorraine
Jane created this piece during the ‘make a mark’ exercise which I challenged the group to. Not an easy thing to add to a photo you consider finished – but I loved what Jane’s words brought to this image so much.
" I enjoyed a wonderful workshop with Charlie in the Netherlands. A lovely group of people spending time together in the most sublime of woodlands. Charlie went out of her way to make sure that we had as much tuition as we needed. I have dipped in and out of ICM but found this workshop really got to grips with ironing out problems that I had encountered and suddenly the woodland was not quite as chaotic as I had originally found. Charlie helped me to identify the best compositions and I really enjoyed the " wow " moments seeing the images on the back of the camera that we had achieved. There are not enough superlatives to describe the places that we visited, the Netherland woodlands are simply magical - they are so different to the woodlands back home. In the afternoons Charlie spent time with us individually helping to edit our images. She had prepared worksheets to inspire us and interesting exercises which we all enjoyed, I really learned a lot. Charlie looked after us 100% and another highlight was spending time in the beautiful town of Doesburg - a complete bonus as it is beautiful beyond belief ! " Jane
Forest bathing
Now, going into winter might seem like an odd time to post this article, suggesting you go out bathing in nature. But actually, probably in the winter more than ever, we need to encourage ourselves and give ourselves a reason to get outside for a bit of fresh air. I know, just like anyone, its so hard when you are in a warm and cozy house and you feel like you have a million things to do, the last thing you really feel like doing is going outside! I regularly have to tell myself that I will enjoy it when I get out there! And every time I make the effort I am so glad that little voice reminding me how much I will enjoy it was greater than the voice telling me it wasn’t necessary.
So….forest bathing….sounds a bit wacky? Well yep, that’s exactly what I thought, but I signed up for a course with the wonderful Justine Ritchie https://www.justineritchie.com/ at the Creative Light festival run by Margaret Soraya in Scotland recently, and I absolutely loved it. I always thought I’d probably ‘done it’ without thinking about is. But Justine opened my eyes (actually every sense other than my eyes) to this wonderful practise and hence I am letting you know in this article my experience.
First things first – you don’t need to be sat in a remote forest in the most beautiful location – your garden or the local park is more than adequate. Trees are handy!
This was our workshop group in the grounds of Polmailly house where the event was held.
The 1st activity we did was make ourselves comfortable in one location – sitting, standing, laying – you choose. Then close your eyes. Run through each of your senses – what are you aware of. Then turn your body 90 degrees and complete the exercise noting any changes. Do these another 2 times till you return to the start. Taking maybe 5 minutes (or more if you have it) in each position. Notice the changes.
For me, I noticed the way the light fell onto my closed eyes through the trees, or from the sky directly depending on the direction. When I faced one way the bird song was intense like the birds were singing to me – that made me physically smile. I also felt a feeling of loneliness as I turned my back towards the rest of the group. I Felt like I had really connected with that one location when I opened my eyes eventually.
The next thing we did was to find a location to sit, with a piece of paper and a pencil. The idea was to place your pencil in the middle of the paper, then close your eyes and draw what you heard – ideally without removing your pencil from the paper – I absolutely loved this experience, and seeing how everyone else approached it was amazing as well. No one had anything similar to another!
No work of art, but actually something I am rather proud of what it means and an activity that I think I can use to bring into my multiple exposure work – see a new project in 2023!!!!
Lastly – after an hour and a half of not even having my camera with me (which made me insanely twitchy!) , we got to make 5 photos! The idea being that you chose one thing to really notice and reflect on and bring that to the images.
I had noticed the way the light was falling on the carpet of leaves, and singled this one out because of the way the light fell on it.
I then found myself in a dilemma – another leaf fell from the tree while I was photographing ‘my leaf’ – to garden or not – that was the question. The urge to make it perfect for the photo, or to embrace the action of nature – I embraced the second option and photographed the new leaf laying on the other – but I noticed this happening, it created a conversation in my brain and made me think about a lot more than just these leaves!
I then looked up to see where the new leaf had come from and saw them dancing above my head – capturing the sound and movement with a slower shutter speed.
Lastly I noticed how the leaves had no end point to them when I started looking at them and picking them up. They were solid, leathery smooth and strong in texture. I decided they looked like little T shirts! So decided for my last photo to create the T shirts hanging on the line!.....Yep my brain works in marvellous ways sometimes!
I hope walking you through my experience of forest bathing has offered you some idea how you can try this for yourself.
• Find a place where you are comfortable to go and close your eyes among trees (of any sort).
• Close your eyes and become aware of all the senses you are using and what you are noticing.
• Try the sound sketch activity.
• Do not use your camera! In fact, don’t even take it with you! Or leave it in its bag.
• Sit with your back against a tree, sit on a log or lean against a tree, or even hug it – get close and feel the form and structure and textures.
• Let a tree pick you – don’t ask why, just go to that tree. Once you are there, then ask yourself what it was that drew you to that tree. Make 1 photo that encompasses that experience.
I will leave you with my image, and the resulting poem made from the last point above.

The YouTube channel goes from strength to strength. Every day I have new subscribers, and some lovely comments. I try to add a couple of videos a month on subjects I have been asked about or I think you will find interesting. The latest up are a set of videos about using your Phone for ICM and multiple exposure photography.
My ethos with these videos is always to stay true to my processes and show you in a straight forward way my work processes from concept to creation.
I recently added a video for festive inspiration – where I visited my local garden centre to create ICM and multiple exposure images with my phone.

A massive thank you
A couple of months ago, I did something I have never done before, and asked for support in a public vote for one of my images. I am delighted to say that with all your support (over 200 of you) my image was picked as the public vote image. There were over 120 entries, so I was delighted to be the public pick.
I entered a multiple exposure ICM image into a photographic competition, organised by CODA museum and library in Apeldorn. I had visited a wonderful exhibition there, https://www.codaapeldoorn.nl/nl/agenda/inside-the-outsidepioneers-in-lens-based-media and after visiting you were encouraged to offer your interpretation in an image of the theme ‘ Nature inside the outside’.
I picked this image because I feel it embraces the idea of different layers within a woodland. In my image I encourage you to venture trough the ICM curtain of dancing autumn leaves, into the snowy woodland beyond.
A last note
I would like to wish each and every one of you my best wishes for the festive season. This year (providing Covid stays under control) I am looking forward to seeing my sister from New Zealand who I have not seen for 4 years, my parents from the UK who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on the 1st January with us. Not only that, my son will be turning 18 between Christmas and New year! Lots to celebrate in our family. Till the next time. Enjoy your photography and remember
