2008-09 Annual Report

A MESSAGE FROM Steve Smith

2009-10 Board of Trustees

Dear Charlotte Christian Community, The 2008-09 school year wrapped up Charlotte Christian’s 58th year as a leading Christ-centered, college preparatory school. This annual report is a reflection of God’s workmanship on our campus and the blessings and accomplishments we enjoyed. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,” Ephesians 2:10. One measure of the quality of a school is the graduate it produces. Our talented senior class earned more than $3.1 million in college scholarships for academics, athletics and fine arts. They had four National Merit commended scholars and tallied more than 20,000 hours of community service. Our varsity football, varsity baseball and theatre teams won state championships. With our generous giving, we exceeded our annual Quality Plus Fund goal of $450,000. These successes wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s support. A special thank you goes to all the members of the Charlotte Christian community - the faculty, staff, parents and volunteers - who gave generously of their time and financial resources to make 2008-09 a successful year. As we move into 2009-10, we pray for God’s continued blessings as we seek to instill a love for Christ, family and others, and to prepare our students to apply Biblical wisdom and discernment to excel intellectually, spiritually and physically. To God be the glory,

Steve Smith Chairman of the Board

history of charlotte christian school HISTORY In our 58-year history, our mission as a Christ-centered, college preparatory educational institution has not changed. God’s word and directions do not change even as the world around us does. Charlotte Christian continuously maps the course for its students, ensuring that the tools that we use are up to date to meet the new challenges faced in educating students in the 21st century. It all began in the 1950s when Dr. L. Pointdexter McClenny cast a vision for local Christian education, setting into motion a chain of events leading up to Charlotte Christian School as we know it today. Dr. McClenny’s commitment to youth was reflected in the establishment of Calvary Christian Day School. Classes were held at the church with nearly 100 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Fast forward to 1958, when a month-long Billy Graham crusade was held at Charlotte’s Ovens Auditorium. A group of local businessmen came away from the revival with a heart for Christian education in Charlotte. They faithfully organized Christian High School in 1960. Nearly 10 years later, Calvary Christian Day School and Christian High School merged to become Christian School Association of Charlotte, Inc. Before opening at its present site in 1972, the school leased property from Calvary Church for several months, though the church and school were no longer affiliated.

As we began school in August, it was clear that 2008-09 was going to be a year unlike any other. With 393 upper school students and two new sections in lower school, we were positioned to do the “good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” for more students and families than ever before at Charlotte Christian School. The record enrollment of 1086 brought many challenges but also great opportunity to put God’s financial blessings to work in preparing each of those students to impact the culture for Christ. While we operated in a great deal of economic uncertainty throughout the school year, the financial results were very positive. Through God’s grace, we were able to grow the school’s net assets, reduce debt and maintain facilities, while increasing our investments in people and programs that would allow God’s workmanship and good works to be evident across the campus.

Annual Quality Plus Fund

On the following pages, you will read the names of donors who collectively have made the 2008-09 school year another remarkable time in the history of Charlotte Christian School. In all, 1380 donors gave $1,850,004 in cash gifts. Contributions were made to the annual Quality Plus Fund, debt reduction and capital improvements through support to the Lighting The Way campaign and other various projects. We are all intensely aware that the challenges of our current economy have impacted many families and institutions, including Charlotte Christian and other nonprofits, and therefore realize that good stewardship of our donors’ contributions is more important than ever. I can personally assure you that Charlotte Christian’s leadership is focused intently on making certain that every donated dollar is used to the greatest benefit for our students and faculty. Meeting this mark is a tremendous achievement, and I hope you will share in my sense of school pride. While these names represent the impact of a community collectively giving to make a difference, there is much more to this story than just the amount raised. In Matthew 6:21 we are reminded, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This simple yet profound statement sums up one of the many distinguishing characteristics about our community - you give and serve with tremendous passion to make a difference for the students and the Kingdom. We are so thankful for all you have done. Gratefully,

George Courtney Director of Development 2008-09 Annual Report

Annual giving plays a key role at Charlotte Christian School. For 58 years, God has faithfully provided for the financial needs of the school through the generosity of parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and community friends. This year, giving to the annual Quality Plus Fund (QPF) exceeded the $450,000 goal. The overall success of 2008-09 QPF is largely due to the leadership of Jim and Becca Edwards and the numerous volunteers who worked diligently to generate this level of support. Through this generous support, we are able to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the cost of providing students and faculty with excellent resources. Middle School Nativity

It was another exciting year for the Lighting The Way campaign. During the 2008-09 school year our community was blessed with the celebrations of two major announcements. Guy Gymnasium Complete First was the announcement of the wonderful gift from Jimmy and Brenda Guy and their children Brittany ‘10 and Rob for the renovations of what was known then as the lower gymnasium. These renovations have totally transformed this space into an updated athletic facility for students, coaches, faculty and families to enjoy. Renovations included: siding, roof, waterproofing, insulation, wooden floor, portico addition, sidewalks and landscaping. This facility, now known as The Guy Gymnasium, is dedicated in loving memory of James Robert Guy, Jimmy’s father.

The second announcement came in January when our community rejoiced in God’s provision of a $1 million cornerstone pledge toward Phase 2. When complete, this $3.5 million project will replace our cottages with classrooms in a permanent structure. The development and facilities committees continue to explore opportunities for reducing construction costs and raising the additional money needed to complete this project. Through the generosity of many, more than $9.6 million has been raised for capital improvements and the Quality Plus Fund. This is a big accomplishment for our community and a tremendous blessing to our students. In many ways, the success of this campaign can be credited to so many who have given generously and even sacrificially. We appreciate John and Anne Putnam in continuing to lead the many volunteers who have spent hundreds of hours planning and sharing the goals of the campaign and asking for support.
