In my role, I have the privilege of interacting regularly with a wide range of constituents.

Whether I am meeting with a new JK family or a parent of alumni who has been connected with the school for decades, a group of Upper School students or grandparents visiting for the morning, I know they all have a Country Day story to tell. I love hearing from our community members on why they chose Country Day, what impact the school is making for them, and what they value most about their connection to the school.

While every story is individual, many, many share the common threads of outstanding faculty and staff, preparation for life, and strong community.

The exceptional academic experience Country Day students receive is made possible by our committed, caring, and talented teachers. They are a community of learners themselves, constantly seeking new and innovative ways to integrate curriculum across disciplines, deepen understanding, and create impactful student experiences. They are also deeply committed to knowing their students, so they can discover and nurture talents and bring out the best in every child.

Alumni and parents of alumni, particularly, tell me that Country Day teachers prepare our graduates well for success in college. But more than that, they say the overall Country Day experience prepared them for life. A homestay language immersion in a foreign country, a multi-year commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters, or the lessons learned from a tough team loss, all make a lasting impact on students.

Administrators, teachers, coaches, and advisors are committed to shaping students into adults who are comfortable in diverse settings and ready to tackle new challenges with honor, integrity, and confidence.

Parents and friends are the school’s partners in our shared Art Roselle and Mark Reed mission to serve students and prepare them for the world.

Over the course of our nearly 75-year history, our strong sense of community has elevated us in good times and bolstered our strength during times of challenge.

When people ask me my Country Day story, I often find myself talking about community—how welcoming we are, how committed we are, and how giving we are of our time and resources for the betterment of student experiences.

In this Annual Report, we celebrate the stories behind your gifts to Country Day. No matter what your motivation for supporting the school and its students, I am deeply grateful for your commitment of time and resources. You make it possible for us to give students an extraordinary educational experience. On behalf of the faculty and staff, thank you to everyone who supports Country Day.

As I begin my term as chairman of the Board of Trustees, it is amazing to think that 2016 will mark Charlotte Country Day’s 75th year. In 1941, I doubt anyone imagined that the school would now be serving over 1,650 students on two campuses, with almost 345 faculty and staff members and hundreds of volunteers. However, I expect they would have imagined that Country Day would still be thriving as a leading institution dedicated to educating and nurturing students. That core piece of the vision and mission of the school has been consistent since its founding, and generations of students and families have benefited from the stewardship, wisdom, and foresight of the leaders who have built this school over the years.

The current Board of Trustees seeks to build upon that legacy and to think forward about the next 75 years. In simplest terms, we have two goals: to make sure the school is providing the best possible educational environment to our current students, while also seeking to fortify the financial and strategic foundation that will allow the school to offer students even greater opportunities in future years. In pursuing these goals, we have the benefit of strong and stable financial resources, a committed and supportive community, and excellent leadership from Mark Reed and his team. We are very fortunate on all these fronts and will seek to make the most of our strong position in the coming years.

Financial stability has always been a defining characteristic of Country Day and that foundation has continued to get stronger.

This year will mark record enrollment, record fundraising from our Annual Fund, and an endowment that crossed above $50 million for the first time in the school’s history. In addition, we have continued to add programs and resources to the educational experience at Country Day, including our new 1:1 technology initiative, while keeping tuition increases at or below inflation for Mark’s entire six-year tenure. All of these statistics are uncommon in the world of independent schools, and we are very grateful for all the hard work and generosity that have made them possible. In particular, we are grateful to all of you who have made the school a priority in your philanthropic giving.

Your charitable giving will continue to be important as we embark on new capital projects and begin to implement significant pieces of our longer term strategic and facilities plan.

You will be hearing more about these initiatives in the months and years ahead, and we look forward to your support in helping us reach our goals. We are very excited about the ways these new projects and initiatives can help us better educate students and build a stronger community of learners.

The Gift of Financial Strength

Every day, Country Day students learn and grow in an atmosphere of stability and opportunity, which is the result of exceptional financial leadership by our Board of Trustees, along with the spirit of generosity and commitment shared by our entire community.

In the past five years, thanks to our Board of Trustees and many generous donors, the financial health of our school has never been better. A strong Annual Fund and a growing endowment help support every student enrolled in our school and allow us to continuously improve and innovate.

We are thankful for every gift of your time and resources in creating the distinctive Country Day educational experience for our students.

In 2014, we began to roll out our 1:1 technology initiative, which puts school-issued mobile computing devices into the hands of all students in grades 3–12. Thanks to the school’s sound financial footing and strong culture of giving, we are able to go 1:1 without passing significant fees on to parents.

Endowment: A Story of Strength and Stability

What is Endowment? An endowment fund can be compared to a long-term investment or savings plan. It’s a permanent fund in which the principal is invested and the earnings are spent.

Why is Endowment Important? A strong endowment ensures our long-term strength and stability because the funds help to support dynamic programming, a diverse community of learners, and the operating costs that come with innovative facilities. Endowment relieves pressure on tuition and annual giving, playing a critical role in ensuring the long-term affordability of a Country Day education.

How Endowment Works at Country Day The principle is held in perpetuity, while a percentage of the investment income is paid out each year.

An endowment fund is established with a major gift from a generous donor.

In the weeks leading up to Reunion Weekend, we challenged classes celebrating a reunion to reach an average of 25 percent participation in the Annual Fund. We are pleased to report that reunion classes raised their participation by an average of 35 percent! In addition to the $25,000 matching gift generously donated by Annual Fund co-chairs John and Ansley Bost Calhoun ’83, the class with the greatest increase in participation over last year won a photo booth at their Class Reunion party.

The prize went to the Class of 1980, which more than tripled the number of Annual Fund donors for their class. Honorable mentions go to the Class of 2005, which finished second in terms of increase in participation, and the Classes of 1985 and 1990 which both had over 35 percent class participation as of April 25.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated in the challenge, and to our generous alumni who support the Annual Fund each year.
