Message from the Interim Head of School

AAS WE BEGIN the 2024–25 school year, I want to extend my gratitude to the entire Charlotte Country Day School community for your trust and support. Despite the unanticipated challenges we faced last school year, I can assure you that the Board of Trustees, the Leadership Team, the faculty and staff, and I, remain committed to serving our mission in the year ahead and providing our students with an excellent educational experience.

We ended last school year on a high note with the exciting news that Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey will lead us beginning July 1, 2025. You can read more about Tara in the Board Chair message from Bill Zimmern ’95 on page 14. In the year ahead, my goal will be to keep the school operating smoothly so that Tara can hit the ground running in July. I look forward to working closely with Tara to make her transition to the Country Day community as seamless as possible.

She will be joining a school community that is welcoming, dynamic, committed to excellence, and grounded in the strength of our past, as well as the promise of our future. Throughout this publication you can read highlights from the previous school year that speak to the strength of Country Day and its community. For instance, the Class of 2024 received nearly $11.9 million in scholarship offers, the Girls’ Track and Field team brought home the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) State Championship trophy for the second year in a row, and our Upper School theatre program was once again recognized with numerous Blumey nominations.

This issue also celebrates the history of our athletics program through the revival of the Athletics Hall of Honor, as well as the value and impact coaches play in the lives of our students and alumni. As we look toward the future, we introduce and welcome a new Head of Upper School, Nidhi McVicar. And the Strategic Planning Task Force concluded a productive year by sharing a framework of broad, guiding strategic goals.

I hope you enjoy this issue of Perspectives and feel the same pride that I do in all that Country Day represents. I remain deeply humbled and honored to serve as interim head of school. I have always been, and will continue to be, committed to giving my very best to help make Country Day the best it can be.

Respectfully,

Meet Nidhi McVicar,

Head of Upper School

NNIDHI MCVICAR JOINED Country Day in July as head of Upper School. Along with a warm and engaging personality and a collaborative communication style, Nidhi brings a wealth of experience in independent schools. She most recently served as the assistant head of school at Germantown Academy in Philadelphia, where she co-authored and stewarded the introduction of the school’s Community Commitments, led aspects of strategic vision planning, created health and wellness initiatives across three divisions, directed faculty professional growth, and designed a new evaluation system.

Prior roles include director of Teaching and Learning at The Overlake School in Seattle, where she drove innovation and collaborative change across all school divisions. She played a key role in strategic initiatives, such as a school schedule redesign, instructional technology integration, and experiential education. She spent 12 years as a faculty member, PLC coordinator, class dean, and student advisor at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida.

Nidhi holds an MEd in school leadership from Columbia University’s Teachers College, an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, and a BS in accounting from Boston College. She and her husband have twins, who have joined Country Day’s sixth grade.

What excites you the most about leading Country Day’s Upper School?

Upper School is both the celebration of an enormous investment of time and effort and a prologue to future adventures. It’s this special time where students get to be the “oldest kids” and the “youngest adults.” I love helping

I am looking forward to experiencing all the arts, athletics, and community events that Country Day offers.

students make connections between their many experiences as they begin to fully appreciate the bigger picture of their education.

Practically speaking, the energy and optimism of Upper School students keeps me hopeful and excited to come to work every day.

How have you stayed connected with students as you have advanced into administrative roles?

I’m lucky to have remained a teacher and/or advisor every year of my career. Teaching is at the heart of what I do with adults and young people, even in school leadership. My administrative decisions are better when I can put myself in the shoes of a teacher or student. I also like to work in community spaces other than my office when possible, so you might see me at a table in the library or dining hall chatting with people who wander by.

How will you get to know the Country Day community?

It is definitely going to take time, but I am excited to dive in. I am looking

forward to experiencing all the arts, athletics, and community events that Country Day offers. I also anticipate eating a lot of lunches and taking walks with colleagues and students so that I can learn about what is important to them. The school has so much to be proud of and also a desire to continue to innovate and ask big questions. I am a strong believer in using data to inform decisions, so I know I will also send out surveys as a tool for gathering honest feedback and ideas from people across the community.

How do you inspire those around you?

I think schools are special places because we often get to witness incredible creativity and growth from those around us. My “inspiration” comes from the work my colleagues and students accomplish, so I see myself as an amplifier and connector. Sometimes, we get focused on our own lives in school and forget to take in the enormity of achievement happening. I am fortunate to have a role where I will get to experience joy across the Upper School and then share it with others.

LAUNCHING INTO FUTURE GROWTH AND PROMISE

Message from the Board of Trustees Chair, Bill Zimmern ’95

THE 2023–24 school year reinforced the incredible strength of our school community and the solid foundation upon which we all stand. Despite unanticipated challenges, we finished the year on solid footing thanks to the steadfast leadership of the Board of Trustees and Interim Head of School David Mancos. As we begin the 2024–25 school year, last year’s accomplishments serve as a launching pad for future growth and promise.

In May, we announced Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey as our next head of school, beginning her tenure in July 2025. A relational, accom plished leader and experienced educator, Tara has served since 2015 as the head of school at The Hewitt School, an indepen dent school for girls in New York City. Previously, Tara held leadership roles at Princeton University, and has taught and coached at The Peddie School, Emory University, Georgetown University, Oxford University, and Princeton University.

A lifelong educator, Tara has effectively nurtured healthy relationships with constituents, built consensus for change, and acted resolutely when difficult decisions were necessary. She has led fundraising campaigns and major campus renovation projects and understands the importance of student mental health and wellness in the context of a competitive, high-achieving academic environment. Tara’s demonstrated decisionmaking and collaborative spirit will amplify

the great work and legacy of our previous leaders. Simply put, our school is ready for the invigorating spirit and inspiring leadership that we firmly believe Tara will instill in our school community in the years ahead. Thank you to Kandi Deitemeyer and Stanton McCullough for co-chairing our search committee. Another major step forward for Country Day is the development of a Strategic Plan framework that, in parallel with Tara’s proven leadership, will guide us in our mission to deliver excellence in education for every student. At the start of the 2023–24 academic year, our Strategic Planning Task Force Co-Chairs, Ron Eliasek and Lisa Toppin, shared with the community our plans to develop core strategic values and aspirations of the school in service to its mission. The community was invited to participate in listening sessions in the fall, which complemented previous community input, including the SAIS accreditation process, the Wellness Survey by Authentic Connections, and the Parent Survey. Led by the Strategic Planning Task Force, the Board of Trustees combined our community’s input with external research on educational and demographic trends to narrow and finalize our core values and aspirations into a few broad guiding goals (next page). The Board of Trustees will continue this work next year by studying innovative trends in independent education and assessing the best and highest use of

Country Day’s resources to determine the optimum path forward building upon our foundational strategic framework.

I’d like to thank Ron and Lisa for their strategic leadership, as well as the commitment of the Strategic Planning Task Force members: Katharine Atkins, Sam Bowles ’93, Shannon Drosky, Nancy Ehringhaus, Shanon Jones, David Mancos, Stanton McCullough, Leigh Moran, Scott Waybright, and Brian Wise.

Our ability to keep Country Day moving forward reflects the strength of our school community and the reputation for excellence we hold high. Highlights from the various reports in this publication include a reenrollment rate of 97 percent, Country Day Fund participation and giving at an all-time high, and parent support groups that partner with the school to build community and enhance the educational experience for our students. So many critical strengths underscore Country Day’s great promise in the years ahead.

Please join me in recognizing trustees rolling off the Board of Trustees this year: Gary Little, Scott Mattei, Stoney Sellars, and Scott Stevens. I sincerely thank them for their dedicated service and unwavering commitment to our community. Lastly, I’d like to welcome Ali Summerville, Kelly Walton Miller ’90, and Luis Lluberas, who will be joining the Board of Trustees this school year.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time, talent, and treasure to make a lasting impact for our school. I am optimistic for the future and the many ways Country Day will continue to be the educational leader in our region.

Sincerely,

2023-24 COUNTRY DAY FUND

Participation by Constituency

We are fortunate to have widespread support for the school’s top giving priority, the Country Day Fund.

2023-24 SUMMARY OF GIVING

Tuition, which covers 80% of our annual budget, plays the largest role in our ability to serve our mission. Philanthropic support plays a critical role in augmenting tuition revenue to help fund exceptional opportunities for Country Day students.

In April, Upper School took a collective break from classes to host the Special Olympics Mecklenburg County Spring Games. This definitive Country Day experience has been happening since 1984 and is just one example of the engaged citizenship that every student experiences, in multiple ways, during the course of the school year.

2023–24

PARENT SUPPORT GROUP REPORT

Empowering Parent Involvement

OUR SCHOOL BENEFITS greatly from incredible parent involvement, working together to enhance student programs, foster a sense of community, and generate funds. Our parent volunteer and fundraising initiatives fall into four main groups: Parents' Association, Boosters Club, POCIS, and Country Day Fund. Many of you have volunteered,

given back, and supported these efforts throughout the school year, and it has made an incredible difference. In the spirit of transparency and celebration, we want to take a moment to not only say THANK YOU but also report back on how your volunteer and fundraising efforts made an impact.

The Parents’ Association (PA) builds connection, fosters community spirit, provides volunteer opportunities, and raises supplemental funds through events and other gatherings open to all Country Day families. From the Auction and Big Saturday to the All-School Picnic and Run for Good, the PA had a wonderful year of events, gathering as a collective community to celebrate our school. The PA also hosted many events to honor our amazing faculty and staff, including the first ever full faculty/staff celebration week. In addition to all the hospitality events that are held at the division level, this new event was a week to thank every employee who makes Country Day the special place that it is. There were also many people serving as classroom or advisory parents, opening carpool doors, helping with parent education events, or with the arts and drama receptions. Throughout the year over 700 volunteers made all of this happen. Thank you to everyone that helped in any way, big or small. Our school is a better place because of you.

From our fundraising efforts, the PA gave back over $425,000 to the school. The majority of these funds went toward security improvements on Cannon Campus and technology upgrades in the Gorelick Family Theater. Many smaller items were gifted at the division level as well, including new basketball goals for the Lower School playground, the beloved Artists in Residence program at the Middle School, and other needed items for the arts and science classrooms in the Upper School.

Thank you again to our entire parent community for helping make this year such a success!

From Kristin Sturges Hair ’95, Parents’ Association President

The Boosters Club supports our studentathletes through a variety of spirit-promotion, fundraising, and community-building activities. The Boosters Club had a very busy second half of the school year. Some highlights include hosting both winter and spring Lower and Middle School spirit events, operating Bucs Cafe during Big Saturday, and providing concessions during this year’s Mecklenburg County Special Olympics Spring Games. Boosters sold over $36,000 in concessions between January and May, and we could not have done it without the support of our parent volunteers, who spent countless hours in our concession stands during home sporting events. Additionally, the Boosters Club made a generous commitment to the revival of the Athletics Hall of Honor (see more on page 26). All funds raised by the Boosters Club directly support the athletics department and our student-athletes Middle School through varsity.

People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS)

supports families of color and the school’s DEIB initiatives and serves as a space of unity and belonging. This year, POCIS aimed to continue “valuing the relationships uniting us as a school,” one of Country Day’s key values, by putting relationship building first in our programming. Members of the POCIS community and beyond helped make the annual Back-to-School Cookout and Lower School Buccaneer’s Choice Dance two of the highest-attended events in POCIS history. Through these events, parents, faculty, staff, and students shared laughs, awesome dance moves, and favorite recipes while building and deepening old and new relationships. With the proceeds from the dance, POCIS was able to increase its support of the Mark E. Reed Scholarship. Finally, we were thrilled to highlight two of our diverse faculty and staff members in our Getting to Know You series during the general body meetings. We are thankful for this community within the greater Country Day community and the friendships that have resulted from it.

Creating a Joyful Community of Learners

Country Day was a pivotal part of my life that opened so many doors for me. In a few short years, I developed a passion for physics, fully learned a language, explored dozens of subjects with teachers who left a permanent mark on me, and formed many lasting memories. Perhaps best of all, I formed incredibly strong friendships with so many kind, intelligent, and highly talented people, who still to this day, inspire me to push for greatness.

DEIB REPORT

SINCE THE CREATION of Country Day’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Strategic Plan in 2021, our commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment has shown significant progress. Our dedication to excellence in education, as articulated in our Affirmation of Community, is intrinsically linked to our mission to create a thriving environment for all community members. Through our DEIB Strategic Plan, we have focused on creating a healthy, inclusive, and equitable campus climate, recruiting and developing a diverse community, and supporting innovative and inclusive teaching and learning. Notable achievements from the 2023–24 school year include the following:

• Development and implementation of professional development training for all Lower School faculty, Culturally Responsive Teaching.

• Diverse Faculty Leadership Development Initiative—28 faculty and staff fellows participated in a state-of-the-art leadership program.

• Establishing a 16-member Upper School Community and Belonging Student Leadership Committee.

These strides affirm our belief that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are essential to individual achievement and academic excellence. We continue to work toward achieving the goals presented in the DEIB Strategic Plan by developing, strengthening, and revising foundational programs, metrics and accountability, and infrastructure as ways to institutionalize this work. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the members of our community who have contributed to these efforts, helping us work towards our goals and, most importantly, making an impact on the lives of our students.

With deep sadness, our community learned of Cackie’s passing, due to a cardiac event, in October 2023.

Cackie deeply valued friendships and had a true gift for bringing people together and spreading joy; whether she was cheering on the Crimson Tide at an Alabama football game, enjoying her love for live music all over the country, helping clients find their forever homes, mentoring peers in the real estate industry, or finding peace at the beach.

Classmate and lifelong friend, Katie Young Harris ’09, shared, “Cackie leaves behind a beautiful legacy as a fiercely loyal friend with a big laugh and an even bigger heart. Never one to shy away from the truth,

never one to miss a social gathering, and always the first one to say hello, she was, and will always be, a bright light to anyone lucky enough to know her.”

Lifelong family friend Anne Pipkin ’78 reinforces this sentiment, sharing “Cackie’s smile and laugh could light up any room. She was a bright, energetic, and deeply loyal friend. This endowed scholarship will be an ongoing testament to her love of helping others.”

A Legacy of Light

In a profound testament to the enduring power of love and memory, Cackie’s parents Elizabeth Carver Warren ’78 and Hans Warren channeled their grief into a force for good by generously establishing The Cackie Morrow ’09 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in January 2024.

This scholarship is a heartfelt tribute to Cackie, whose spirit will continue to illuminate the paths of others. Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving Lower

Legacy with the

Dedication

of The Pitts Family Garden

In the heart of Country Day’s Lower School campus now lies the vibrant Pitts Family Garden, a living and growing tribute to the enduring dedication and generosity of Rodney Pitts ’64.

As Rodney and Elizabeth Pitts, along with Michael and Betsy Bryan Pitts Mandl ’09, arrived early to the Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon, they were met with a heartfelt surprise—a special dedication awaited them!

Board Chair Bill Zimmern ’95 commenced the ceremony with words of appreciation, acknowledging the true depth of Rodney’s impact on Charlotte Country Day School. “Alumni engagement is critical to the school’s success,” Bill shared, “and Rodney has been an exemplary example of servant leadership.”

Rodney’s journey with Country Day began in 1952, when he joined as a kindergartner, predating the expansion to Cannon Campus on Carmel Road. The education at Country Day propelled him toward achievements at Episcopal High School, Duke University, and the University of Chicago.

Alongside a thriving career as chairman and CEO of Southern Elevator Company, Rodney’s dedication to Country Day remained unwavering. He became a familiar presence at school events, from Big Saturday festivities to football games and reunion gatherings. Additionally, his leadership as an Investment Committee member for over 25 years and his philanthropic endeavors underscore his commitment to the school’s mission.

Yet, Rodney’s impact extends beyond his active involvement over the decades. In 1991, Rodney established the W.R. Pitts Family Endowed Scholarship Fund as a successor to scholarship giving that was begun by his father in 1976. Over the years, Rodney and his family made additional, transformational gifts to grow the scholarship. With his most recent gift, the W.R. Pitts Family Endowed Scholarship now offers five promising Lower School students the opportunity to attend Country Day who would not otherwise be able to. Rodney’s thoughtful and generous support has made this endowment the largest financial aid offering at Country Day.

The dedication of The Pitts Family Garden symbolizes the collective appreciation for Rodney’s and the Pitts family’s contributions. It stands as a living reminder of his unwavering commitment to Country Day and its students, and a testament to the enduring power of generosity and service.

SHAPING LIFELONG SKILLS BEYOND THE SHAPING LIFELONG SKILLS BEYOND THE Game Game

Given that 85 percent of Country Day Middle and Upper School students participate in athletics at the Middle School, junior varsity, and varsity levels, the role and influence of our coaching staff is a fundamental part of a Country Day education. In fact, alumni often reflect on coaches who helped them develop the life skills they continue to carry with them long after their playing days are over.

The influence of a great coach can be the difference between fleeting moments of triumph and lifelong legacies of character and resilience. They create an environment where young athletes learn the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Six members of the Country Day athletics staff talk about their approach to coaching student-athletes and how their impact resonates far beyond the athletics arena.

“We

stress with our players the importance of coming to practice with a good attitude, putting forth your best effort, and being a good teammate.”

PASSIONATE PLAYER AND COACH

ANNA CRISS

u Volleyball Program Head

u Middle School PE Teacher

u Asst. 8th Grade Girls' Basketball Coach

For Anna Felice Criss, athletics, coaching, and teaching are in the genes. Her mother was a teacher, a principal, and eventually superintendent of Wake County Schools, while her father taught PE, coached basketball, and became an athletics director. However, Anna didn’t set out to teach when she earned a degree in health and wellness promotion from UNC-Asheville and All-Big South Conference honors for her time as a volleyball standout. She did, however, feel that “coaching was something I’ve always been passionate about and felt called to do.”

In 2016, Anna (then Anna Moore) was hired as the Bucs’ volleyball program head after a two-year stint as an assistant volleyball coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University, where she earned her master’s degree in public health. The coaching job at Country Day coincided with an opening for a Middle School PE teacher, which is how Anna discovered she loves teaching, too. “I’ve been here eight years now, and I’ve realized this is clearly what I’m meant to do,” she says.

As the volleyball program head, Anna says, “Of course we want to be competitive, and we want to win. But we also want our athletes to learn valuable lessons about discipline and commitment, about hard work and responsibility. We stress with our players the importance of coming to practice with a good attitude, putting forth your best effort, and being a good teammate. If you can do those three things every practice, every gameday, then at the end of the season, you’re not only going

to be a better volleyball player, but we’re all going to be a better team.”

Anna, who serves as assistant coach for eighth-grade girls’ basketball, jokes that basketball was her first love, but volleyball is her forever love. And she wants her players to have as much fun as she does on the court. Having fun doesn’t mean goofing around or not taking practice seriously. “The fun comes from competing with your friends and fellow coaches, challenging each other, building strong relationships.”

And for Anna, working hard is also part of the fun. One of her favorite quotes is from A League of Their Own when Jimmy Dugan says, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.”

Anna’s coaching philosophy stems from the deep respect and love she has for many coaches she has had throughout her life. Her high school basketball coach “taught me what it looks like to work hard day in and day out. She was tough, but she was great.” Her travel volleyball coach taught Anna what discipline looks like. Her high school volleyball coach helped her realize the impact she could have on the rest of her team, and her UNCA coach “taught me what commitment means to the program and the team, and what it means to be a leader.”

In a full circle moment, Anna’s first coach, her father, served as her volunteer assistant coach this past season. “My dad is a great coach and a lot of the things I have learned about coaching, I’ve learned from him,” says Anna, who recently got married and changed her name to Criss. “He’s used to being called Coach Moore. So, on the first day of practice, when all the girls are saying ‘Coach Moore,’ his head keeps turning, and I had to remind him ‘they’re not talking to you,’” she laughs.

CREATING A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

OSCAR DEL PINO

u Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer Program Head and Varsity Coach

u Special Programs Coordinator

Calm. Analytical. Focused. Oscar Del Pino, who joined Country Day five years ago after 12 successful seasons leading the boys' soccer program at Charlotte Catholic, works hard to not be the kind of coach he often witnessed in his youth as a soccer player. “I think the modern way to coach is about process and problem-solving,” he says. “Intense, loud, intimidating coaches focused solely on winning can get the best out of certain kinds of players, but they also alienate or completely break other players.”

“My goal is to create a positive environment for young people to thrive. The team is a tapestry of distinct individuals who learn in different ways, who respond to feedback in different ways, who are motivated in different ways. We set individual and team goals and give the kids a roadmap to build upon, but ultimately, it’s their journey, not mine. They are driving the bus and myself and the other coaches are there to help them navigate the road ahead.”

For Oscar, the soccer field is like a classroom in the sense that the core of the game is about problem-solving—whether it’s strategizing how to take advantage of an opponent’s weaknesses, working on individual skill development, or fine-tuning a play. “The tactical play calling is the coach’s business,” says Oscar. “But on game day, when players step on the field those X’s and O’s may move differently. Sports

teaches kids how to problem solve in the moment, under intense conditions.”

He also embraces athletics as one of the best ways to learn from failure. “Failure on the sports field can be demoralizing, it can be crushing. It’s also a door, and I want kids to learn that they get to decide what happens when they walk through that door,” he says. “Failure can bring unexpected opportunities, it makes us more resilient, it helps us to be problem solvers, it teaches perseverance, and it helps us to appreciate the successes even more.”

While Oscar is not overtly focused on the wins and losses, he knows that victories matter in sports, and it’s the ultimate measure of success. As program head, his sure and steady approach is leading to increasingly favorable outcomes. Both the girls’ and boys’ varsity programs have reached the state semifinal rounds in the past two years. And ever the problem-solver, he surrounds himself with staff who compliment and balance the needs of the overall program.

“The biggest strength I see at Country Day is community, a community that spans decades,” says Oscar. “We’ve got alumni on the soccer staff, and we’ve partnered with afterschool enrichment on what their soccer program should look like for our youngest students. Lower School Spirit Week is another community opportunity for the younger kids to learn about sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience from older students, and for the older students to serve as role models. I really appreciate that I can look at soccer comprehensively from JK-12.”

That calm, analytical, and focused approach will continue to impact students today and tomorrow.

“My goal is to create a positive environment for young people to thrive. The team is a tapestry of distinct individuals who learn in different ways.”

COACHING THE MIND

Like many talented, young athletes, when ChaChi Sullivan headed to South Carolina State University to play football, his four-year plan was to play in the NFL. When that didn’t work out, his coach, who he says was like a father figure to him, convinced him to stay in school and get a master’s degree on top of his undergrad degree in kinesiology. A chance meeting with a professor led ChaChi to join the master’s program in counseling at the University of South Carolina. “I absolutely fell in love with it,” says ChaChi. At the time, he was also coaching football as a graduate assistant and had opportunities with several college programs and did an internship with the Carolina Panthers.

“But I found my real passion in counseling, and I spent 15 years in community-based adolescent programs, such as group homes. It’s tough work, but important work.”

In recognition of the growing mental health issues affecting today’s children—nationally and right here at Country Day—ChaChi was hired this past school year for a newly created counseling position specifically for athletics. His background helps him to connect with both coaches and athletes.

“There are a lot of things coming at young people today that coaches are not necessarily trained to see or equipped to manage,” says ChaChi. “If a young person has one really rough practice, well that happens. But if they’re having a really rough week, that’s an indicator for me that

they may need a check-in,” explains ChaChi. “This role is important because it allows Country Day to be proactive versus reactive to a student’s needs.”

ChaChi says Country Day is ahead of the game in this area for a high school and models the approach of many professional teams. “There has always been support for the physical aspects of sports. If you need to get stronger, you go to the weight room; if you have an injury, you see the athletic trainers. But what’s the regimen for self-doubt, for performance anxiety, for worries about college? As athletes mature, the improvement becomes less and less physical and more about mental head space.”

For some student-athletes, a check-in with ChaChi may mean a 15-minute chat every few weeks or it may mean a weekly session for deep discussion. He has also created an inviting wellness space outside of his office in Bruton Smith Athletic Center to give students a place to come and just hang out. Students eat lunch and study there during the school day, and many teams use it for the pre-game meals and gatherings.

A positive ChaChi sees is the growing awareness and acceptance of counseling. “A generation ago, it would be taboo to be seen coming out of my office,” says ChaChi. “But students today often self-diagnose. They know that when they are stressed out, when they are feeling anxious, they can and should seek help.”

“Ultimately, we want these young people to leave Country Day with a well-rounded education and a well-rounded view of themselves.”

“As athletes mature, the improvement becomes less and less physical and more about mental head space.”

FROM STUDENT-ATHLETE TO INSPIRATIONAL COACH

MAGGIE DANIEL ’07

u Assistant Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coach

u Boys’ and Girls’ Goalkeeper Coach

u Grade 4 Assistant Teacher

Maggie Daniel ’07, a Country Day lifer, has worked at the school as an assistant teacher and coach for 10 years. “I am very fortunate to be able to work with not only Lower Schoolers in the classroom, but Middle Schoolers and Upper Schoolers on the field,” she says. “As a coach, there is nothing more fulfilling than helping continue to build a program that you played in as a student-athlete.”

Maggie was the goalkeeper for the Bucs during her days as a student, and today, she serves as both the Varsity Girls’ Soccer assistant coach, as well as the girls’ goalkeeper coach for the entire seventh through twelfth grade program, as well as for the Boys’ Upper School program.

“Goalkeeping is a very specialized position, so it makes sense that as we build a comprehensive program, we focus on bringing players up and along at all levels. The work we put in with the Middle School keepers will benefit the JV and varsity teams,” she says.

Maggie likens the way she coaches goalkeepers to the way she approaches lessons with her fourth graders. “Just because you know how to do something yourself, doesn’t necessarily mean you know how to teach other people to do it,” says Maggie. “I remember when I first started coaching, I struggled to teach the players how to make a breakaway save. So, I put in the time watching videos and watching other coaches teach it. I figured out how to break it down in a way

the keepers could understand and execute themselves. Just like in the classroom, you can always improve the way you deliver content.”

And just as she does with her fourth graders, Maggie recognizes that every student-athlete is different and a seventh grader just starting out needs different coaching than a senior headed to a collegiate program. “I want to make the time I have with each player worthwhile. That means strategically planning each session to benefit each goalkeeper, regardless of experience level.”

No matter the level, she encourages her players to focus on the fundamentals. “It might not be flashy, but if you put in the work, if you get the fundamental techniques down and understand positioning in the goal, every other part of goalkeeping—the flying saves, the flashy saves—will come easier.”

She says athletics also provides life lessons that coincide with the ones she is teaching in the classroom. “Did you try your best? That’s something I say to my students all the time,” Maggie shares. “Whether there is a tough opponent on the soccer field or a challenging math equation, working hard and giving it your all teaches the value of perseverance. Another big component of both the classroom and athletics is teamwork. Learning how to work with others, whether or not you connect on a personal level, is a necessary life skill.”

For Maggie, seeing it all click for her players is what she loves most about coaching. “We always believe that they can do it, but they need to believe it, too. So, when you see them progress from season to season, when they’ve put in the hard work, when they’ve overcome a struggle, it’s an extra layer of enjoyment to be a part of this game that means so much to me.”

“Whether there is a tough opponent on the soccer field or a challenging math equation, working hard and giving it your all teaches the value of perseverance.”

“For me, helping athletes get back on the field is extremely satisfying. Seeing their faces light up when they get back out there is the best reward.”

AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT TO THE COACHING TEAM

JASON FARMER

While Jason Farmer doesn’t coach a specific team at Country Day, his impact is felt across all sports on Bissell Campus. As the Middle School athletic trainer, he works with both students and coaches to minimize injuries and help speed recovery to get kids back out on the field. “We’re an integral part of the coaching team, but we’re also in the background in a sense,” says Jason. “You don’t really want to hear from me. As much as I love working with the kids, if they don’t know me very well, that’s a good thing because it means they are healthy and out on the field playing.”

Most afternoons, Jason can be seen on his golf cart rotating between practices or matches on Bissell Campus. In addition to being on-hand to assess and respond to any injuries, he also coaches on things like proper warm-up techniques or body positioning to avoid injury.

When injuries do occur, however, it’s advantageous that Middle School students can see Jason during their lunch break for rehab exercises, ice baths, and general injury assessment. Jason has been in this role at Country Day for 11 years and he really enjoys working with tweens and younger teens.

He jokingly likens Middle School athletes to baby giraffes. “They are growing fast, they are all arms and legs, they are still getting used to their

new dimensions—and they can be really goofy. But they are also sponges and looking for information.”

When students come to see Jason because something hurts, of course he assesses the situation and develops a plan for recovery. But a big part of his job is also to reassure the young students. “At this age, a paper cut and a broken arm can seem like the same level of pain, so you have to really listen and figure out why a student has come to see you.”

Jason spends time teaching students about anatomy, why the body is hurting, and what they can do at home and in the training room to make it better. For instance, the Athletic Training room is equipped with various exercise equipment like rollers, training balls, and stretch bands, along with ice baths, heating pads, and tape.

Jason also enjoys the partnership and trust he has with parents when an injury requires outside intervention, such as when an X-ray is needed or more intensive rehab. “I think this community knows we are committed to doing what’s best for students and they trust us when we have to make a difficult call home about an athletic injury.”

Jason loves sports and played baseball and soccer in high school. An ankle injury his senior season kept him from playing during his team’s state playoff games, so he knows the feeling of missing out. “For me, helping athletes get back on the field is extremely satisfying. Seeing their faces light up when they get back out there is the best reward.”

CULTIVATING CHAMPIONS IN AND OUT OF THE POOL

u Assistant Boys’and Girls’ Swim Coach

u Pre-Swim Team Coach

As a competitive swimmer since age 10 and through college, Mary Schoch has always gravitated to jobs that kept her around the water—which meant lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and eventually coaching. For the past eight years, she has served as assistant coach for Country Day’s swim program. “I love the kids, I Iove getting to experience their growing passion for the water and for the sport. And I love that I get to have an influence on their development as athletes and as good people,” says Mary.

This past year, she added Pre-Swim team coach, a program that helps introduce the fundamentals to Country Day students ages six to 11, who may want to swim competitively in Middle and Upper School.

As a longtime coach with the program, Mary was part of the foundation and traditions built by previous coach Bob Peterson. Ben Keast, who has deep international experience coaching swimmers, just completed his first year at Country Day and was able to lean on Mary for her institutional knowledge and strong relationships with students and parents. “I appreciate how Ben took over with grace and humility, yet also challenged us to do something new,” Mary shares.

“There are good things happening in the pool, and I’m excited for the future.”

In February, for the first time since 2011, our undefeated Girls’ Swim team won the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Associations (NCISAA) State Championship and the boys’ team

finished third. The Bucs broke 10 state records, along with 35 team records this season, 22 of them at the state meet.

“That was a proud swim coach, swim mom moment,” says Mary. “I know I played a part in getting them there, but those girls are working really hard to be the best they can be. I am really happy for them.”

Mary says she is a very relational, experiential coach, who wants to get to know her athletes and build a foundation of trust. “For high schoolers, there is a lot of life happening, and I enjoy helping them get through some of those challenges. I want them to walk away from the practice, from the meet, from the season having had fun, but also feeling challenged and learning something new,” she says.

“As a coach, it can be a challenge to know what’s best. Every year is a new group, a new dynamic. But ultimately, it comes down to making sure the team can say they did their best in the water, they have a good attitude, they have team spirit. We want our swimmers to be good people in and out of the water.”

The Klein Aquatic Center is another huge benefit for our student-athletes. “This is a nicer facility than many collegelevel venues,” says Mary. “And that has opened a lot of doors for the team. This is their space, their home, and they thrive on that comfort. Plus, we are now able to add a strength and conditioning component on dry land this year and that has been huge.”

“There is an energy at Country Day. A spirit of competition, community, and character. The students and athletes are driven. It’s a motivator for me to be better, too,” says Mary. “We are all striving for greatness.”

“I want them to walk away from the practice, from the meet, from the season having had fun, but also feeling challenged and learning something new.”

“O CLUB” Celebrating 20 Years of

Editor’s note: Long-time Lower School science teacher Lori Townsend Mahaffey is taking on a new role as Lower School director of studies. We asked her to write about the lasting impact of this Country Day tradition as she completes her final trip, which coincides with its 20-year milestone.

When the Oceanography Club was introduced to the Lower School by Tom Fredenberg (then a third-grade teacher) in the early 2000s, no one could have predicted that the culminating four-day trip to the Outer Banks would become such a significant part of the fourth-grade experience. For two decades, the “O Club” trip has become its own rite of passage as countless fourth graders and their families have made the trek across the state to learn, explore, and build community. With more than half the grade attending, this trip signifies the last hurrah before these “seniors” of the Lower School move down the road to Bissell Campus.

To better understand the uniqueness of this trip, I asked two veteran O Club travelers to share their primary takeaways.

Two-time traveler and Trustee, Dr. Lisa Toppin, shares: “This trip comes just in time to help kids expand up to Middle School. It is the precursor to School in the Woods when they spend a few days with each other without their parents. This trip allows them to opt into cliques and go back to their parents. It’s good for them to start that process. It also feels like a wonderful culminating activity that marks the end of Lower School and leap up to Middle.

In fact, the learning that is achieved amid moving 60+ kids and their parents from one stop to the next is remarkable. It’s a great demonstration that learning can be fun. It’s a great example of how there is so much to learn nearby as opposed to just thinking about faraway places. Seeing the wild horses on Shackleford Banks is just one example of a wonderful discovery and memorable experience. The O Club trip does a great job of marrying learning, discovery, and fun in one adventure.”

Five-time traveler, Dr. Hodges Davis, shares: “The first time I went on the O Club trip was the second year of its existence at Country Day. I love the Outer Banks. I also love hanging out with my kids and their friends. All the kids may know each other but maybe they had never done anything together. Having a list of activities, that as a parent we did not have to plan and could just show up at, provided the framework for building community. The secret to the longevity of this trip is exactly that—it provides a framework for community as these kids are moving on to a new chapter in their Country Day life. My favorite memory from these trips is always meeting someone new. The parental connections that I made on those trips continue to today.”

Behind the scenes, the teachers who work tirelessly to make this trip a reality, have the same feelings about the importance of this trip being held at

just this moment in a student’s Country Day life. They are ready to be more independent and to be given more room to explore, but it’s clear that they also appreciate the safe landing of their family members and teachers being there to help them navigate the strangeness of everyone being hungry, tired, and hot all at the same time.

Lower School science teacher

Taryn Page, who just completed her fifteenth trip, shares: “I truly enjoy sharing my love of the ocean with my students and inspiring them to learn more as well. From sea turtles to coral reef restoration to beach erosion, the topics are endless. Our monthly after-school meetings provide a setting to learn about these topics, but the end-of-the-year trip really brings it all together. Aside from the educational programming we do during the trip, it’s the sense of community that is overwhelming. Time and time again I hear from families about what a great opportunity it is to get to know others

in their child’s grade level, as well as the unique opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with their child before they move on to Middle School. I was even told once that it was ‘the trip of a lifetime!’…and I agree!”

So much of what Taryn says resonates with each of the teachers fortunate enough to have been involved with this club, and specifically this trip, over the years—all of whom have been under the direction of Tom Fredenberg. He is our Pied Piper, our chaos coordinator, our captain, and our fearless leader. No one has given more time, love, and care to this opportunity for our students and families than Tom. This year, we poked a little fun at “Captain Tom” in celebration of our 20th trip (including tattoos with his face on them, face masks for our group photo, and a Hawaiian-themed shirt featuring photos of Tom.) He took it all

Trip leaders: Tom Fredenberg, Lori Townsend Mahaffey, Taryn Page, and Elise Ernette wearing Hawaiian shirts in tribute to “Captain Tom’s” leadership.

in stride. He knows that he is a beloved member of this community, and we hope he knows how incredibly grateful we all are for this gift he’s given to us in our precious O Club. Personally, I’m appreciative of this trip for many of the reasons stated above, but I’m most appreciative of the gift of a few of my very best friends. Work rarely seems hard when you have your favorite people by your side. I’m glad that my final O Club trip was one for the books! And now for some final thoughts from the legend himself.

Tom Fredenberg, who taught fifth-grade math for many years and has now returned to the Lower School as a science teacher, shares: “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years, because it’s all gone by so quickly. We have a dream team with me, Lori, Taryn, and now, Elise (Ernette). We are the constant when all the other factors change. I never have to wonder how things are going on the other buses, because we finish each other’s sentences and share

a philosophy on how to successfully navigate this unique experience. Seeing Middle Schoolers wearing their O Club shirts to school with pride reminds us that we all have that connection, that shared experience, to remember fondly. This club is special. It’s special because it’s learning at its best. It’s special because it’s fun. And most importantly, it’s special because of the more than 2,000 people who have committed to going on this adventure with us for the past 20 years.”

20 YEARS OF O CLUB BY THE NUMBERS

• 2,600+ fourth graders and their parents/guardians have been on the trip

• 7,200 Rice Krispies Treats consumed

• 20,000 miles traveled by land and sea (ferry rides!)

• 53,760 bottles of water distributed

What is Your Why?

A message from the Alumni Council President, Hayes Ashcraft ’06

I am honored to follow in the footsteps of Lee Norelli Pedersen ’04 as this year’s Alumni Council president. Lee has set the bar very high, and I thank her for her leadership and guidance throughout the 2023−24 school year.

Now, we must carry this momentum into this school year. Take a moment and reflect on your time at Country Day. Through both the memorable and challenging times, Country Day has remained a constant and steadfast supporter of you and your ever-changing needs as a student. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or on the stage—every opportunity was purposely designed with a multi-faceted learning approach, teaching you academically, and preparing you with invaluable life lessons.

What is your “Why?”

So, with these memories in mind, I ask you to find your “Why.” Why do you show up for Country Day? My answer continues to evolve. Initially, I joined the Alumni Council to reconnect with old friends after moving back to Charlotte in 2018. A few years later, my “Why” changed when I took on more responsibilities within the Alumni Council to continue our meaningful impact and support Drew Witman ’06, a long-time friend since Mrs. Smith’s kindergarten class and my quarterback (State Champs ’04). Now, with an incoming kindergartener (Class of 2037) and a threeyear-old, it is simple. They are my “Why.” I am excited about what is in store for the youngest generation. They want to be astronauts, rock stars, or playwrights—go for it. I just so happen to know of a great school ready to foster that ambition and, with courage and reverence, support them the entire way.

With gratitude,

Alumni Weekend officially started on Wednesday, April 24 with the launch of Bucs Together Days of Giving. For the fifth consecutive year, alumni volunteers and donors showered love and support on our faculty, staff, administrators, and coaches through donations to the Country Day Fund. Spearheaded by Clary Hilliard Gray ’00, 628 alumni and close friends donated $222,799, exceeding last year’s campaign and our donor goal for 2024. Gifts to the Country Day Fund help position Country Day to succeed with the necessary resources and support. Even more impressive is that over 55 alumni volunteered during the 52-hour fundraising event—all leading into an amazing weekend full of events, celebrating the ’04 and ’09 class reunions.

FRANK DOWD IV ’74 AND STACY COLLINS LYNCH ’79 HONORED

Friday’s Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon is a cherished tradition bringing together retired and distinguished faculty and staff, esteemed alumni, and special friends. Each year, we present the Alumni Service Award to a deserving member of the Country Day family. This 10th year was uniquely special as we renamed the Alumni Service Award in honor of Frank Dowd IV ’74, who celebrated his 50th Class Reunion that same weekend.

Interim Head of School David Mancos underscored Frank’s dedication and profound impact on our school community: “For decades, Frank IV has been a pillar of excellence in our community and at our beloved school. There is not an area of campus life he has not impacted or served! In honor of Frank IV’s extraordinary commitment to Country Day, the school is renaming the Alumni Service Award in his honor and henceforth, will be the Frank Dowd IV ’74 Alumni Service Award.”

Frank presented this year’s award to Stacy Collins Lynch ’79, celebrating her 45th Class Reunion. Frank’s tribute included poignant reflections and testimonials from Stacy’s beloved and esteemed colleagues, illustrating the profound impact she’s had on our students, families, and community as an alum and for her 35 years of service as an employee of Country Day.

Former colleague Libby Helms shared, “Stacy has more energy and enthusiasm than the proverbial law allows and pours it into every task. Not one to be idle for more than a couple of minutes, she uses her spare time to be thoughtful, generous, and interested in all those around her. If ever a volunteer were needed to take on an extra duty, her hand would be the first to be raised.”

BIPOC ALUMNI REUNION

That evening, the annual BIPOC Alumni Reunion was held at Resident Culture thanks to alumnus, Phillip ’00 and Amanda McLamb. Many members of the BIPOC faculty, staff, and alumni connected to enjoy an event that offered a focus on building and strengthening the Country Day BIPOC alumni community.

ATHLETICS AND CLASS REUNIONS

Saturday of Alumni Weekend kicked off the traditional athletics events with an outpouring of support for baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. In addition, the tennis community came out to support Calvin Davis Jr. and his decades-long leadership of the tennis program. The All-Alumni Happy Hour was held on Cannon Campus again this year, bringing alumni across generations back to campus to reconnect with each other and the school. Finally, the classes of ’4’s and ’9’s celebrated at their individual class reunion parties across town.

The 2024 Alumni Weekend, from the Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon to the many reunion events and everything in between, was a powerful representation of our remarkable Charlotte Country Day School community. Thank you to all of the volunteers and attendees for making the week such a success.

Welcoming Bucs back on campus and hearing updates about your lives fosters connections and builds community.

#BallinBucs As a senior at Penn State, Zoe Weatherington ’19 made headlines after being drafted by the San Diego Mojo in the fifth round of the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation draft. Serving as a starter at opposite for Penn State, Zoe was instrumental in helping the Nittany Lions secure spots in the NCAA Tournament and advance to the Regional Semifinal during both of her seasons in Happy Valley.

Throughout her time at Penn State, Zoe garnered numerous accolades. These included an honorable mention All-Pac-12 honor, a spot on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll, and an Academic All-Big Ten award. Upon graduating in December 2023, she faced multiple professional opportunities, ultimately choosing to begin her rookie season in Puerto Rico with the Atenienses of Manatí, a top league team. Her impressive performance helped the team reach the finals, and she was named Best Scorer of the League.

Now, Zoe embarks on her next adventure, preparing for her second season of professional volleyball in Athens, Greece, starting this fall.

The experience has been really fun and full of unforeseen surprises.”

#BallinBucs Russell Tabor ’21 made a significant impact in his first professional season with the Osos Rivas American Football team in Spain. As quarterback, he led the team to the league championship game and quickly became a key player and leader. After this first season diving into professional football, Russell explored his talents off the field with an investment banking internship at Bank of America in New York City this past summer. Now, he's considering returning abroad to play next spring.

Reflecting on his season, Russell described it as “an amazing experience,” highlighting the dedication and love of football displayed by his Spanish teammates. Russell’s first season overseas exceeded his expectations. “The experience has been really fun and full of unforeseen surprises,” he said. He expressed deep appreciation for his teammates, who welcomed him with open arms from day one. “I’ve really enjoyed all the time I’ve spent with them both on and off the field. The camaraderie and love within the team have been incredible, and I am confident that many of the relationships I have built here will last a lifetime.”

#BucsinBiz Sallie James Weart ’09 serves as the associate director of Government Relations for Michael J. Fox’s Foundation for Parkinson Research. She is pictured here (second from right) with the public policy team at the Seattle Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center. She recently led a project of targeted advocacy that generated a boost of $4.2 million for the work that will help the centers expand outreach and services in 2024.

This week marks one year for me at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and I’m especially thankful my path has landed me here,” she said. “After years in campaign and government roles, I thought a nonprofit move could be a nice change. But beyond the professional growth, I’ve gotten to bring my family’s very up close and personal experience with Parkinson’s into my work

every day. Sometimes that’s really hard. Other days, though, I feel lucky to get to help others understand a little more about this disease and why there’s no time to wait. As Michael has said: “with gratitude, optimism is sustainable.”

#BucsinBiz Courtney Stutts Huge ’12 welcomed 27 of the newest members of the Country Day Cum Laude Society as the induction ceremony speaker this past spring. Her message to our seniors was clear—stay focused, embrace reading (a passion she did not acquire until after graduating from Country Day), and be assured that Country Day has prepared you for what is ahead. Courtney is a certified financial planner, only 5 percent of whom are women under the age of 30, a distinction she earned when she passed the exam at age 23 after finishing her bachelor’s degree.

Latin teacher and Cum Laude Society Chapter President Stephanie Neill Harner ’91, Maclain and Courtney Stutts Huge ’12, math teacher Darrell Bach, retired teacher Bob Plyler, and Director of College Counseling Catherine Odum.
