After much hype and nervousness associated with the idea of visiting a ‘secret’ bar, we descended upon Ruby’s in Dalston. Lucky for us there was no nervous knocking on the door or secret hand shakes and finding the spot under the cinema sign along Stoke Newington Road turned out to be pretty simple. The trek down the almost vertical steps into the basement on the other hand was not, and I’m sure after a few cocktails there have been a couple of casualties. Inside, the bar was the typical mix of lamps and candles, wood furniture and scrappy walls with indie music playing. The menu was split in two with seven seasonal cocktails

that change every few months, and seven classics. I opted for a Blueberry Pie cocktail that came in a long glass topped with whipped cream and a small but perfectly formed blueberry on top, sweet with an alcoholic kick. My accomplices selected an Apple and chilli martini and the signature Blackberry mojito. Both were delicious, my personal favourite being the apple and chilli martini that tasted of cinnamon and apple pie. We all agreed a repeat visit was needed whether it be for intimate drinks with friends, or birthday celebrations and with drinks costing around the £8 mark it is worth the trip. From Highland fling to 90’s grunge, if there is one print you can’t escape from this autumn it’s tartan. Tartans first brush with high fashion came in the 70’s with the likes of Vivienne Westwood voicing the feeling of punk. In the 90’s during the rain of Kurt Cobain, tartan was resurrected taking on a more grunge vibe, not the first time fashionista’s would be stealing from their boyfriend’s wardrobe. This years A/W shows took tartan to new heights showing off the diversity of the print. Clements Ribeiro went for classic punk meets ladylike knit, while Céline turned laundry bags into minimal jumpers and chic clutches, and Saint Laurent took us back to

our school years with white collars andtoggled duffel coats. Punk is the most obvious way to work this trend but aim for Gwen Stefani rather than Sid Vicious. The high street is awash with leather skirts and this All Saints (1) delight keeps things feminine. Tartan smartens up with the likes of ASOS bringing out these pencil legged trousers (2). With the spirit of matching pieces still riding high from summer don’t be afraid to match print with print with this Topshop bag (2). Keep a playful edge in the form of a Pinafore by Glamorous (3). Pink Granny Chic was the main focus at Simone Rocha and if you would rather keep things pretty than Punky, knee length skirts are a quirky way to do this, love the cute Mary Jane’s from Zara (4).
