SUMMER PROJECT. THE BLUEPRINT.
The Blueprint was an idea first thought up mid way through my summer, having spent the majority of my time there i thought it best to base my summer project on that restaurant. Creating a blueprint for the location, allowed me to explore a large quantity of stats and figures relating to different positions, or jobs rather on the map.

SUMMER PROJECT For my summer project I looked at how reliant we are on technology even when we are supposed to be enjoying ourselves on holiday. I recorded my mood for a month on my trip away and noticed that even when we are half way around the world we feel as though we need to check our phones everyday to keep up to date. I created some postcards to hand out to people who are on their phones for too long on holiday with some small reminders on.

MAKING A SUMMER OF MAKING COCKTAILS AT LOCK 91
COCKTAILS
~~~
THE MOST POPULAR COCKTAIL WAS THE ‘LONG ISLAND ICE TEA’. THE COCKTAIL ITSELF IS WELL KNOWN GLOBALLY AND INCREDIBLY REFRESHING TO DRINK. THE LEAST POPULAR COCKTAIL WAS THE ‘FRENCH MARTINI’. I ONLY MADE ONE OF THESE AND I IMAGINE I’LL HAVE ONLY MADE THAT ONE IF I WERE TO CARRY ON DOCUMENTING FOR ANOTHER 3 MONTHS!
MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE COCKTAIL, THE ‘OLD FASHIONED’, WAS ONLY MADE A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES THIS SUMMER.
I SPENT MY SUMMER WORKING IN A MANCHESTER BAR CALLED LOCK 91. TO DOCUMENT MY SUMMER, I TOOK NOTE OF THE NUMBER OF COCKTAILS I MADE DURING A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS OF PART TIME WORK. THE RESULTS AT THE END OF THIS TIME HAVEN’T SURPRISED ME.
THERE WAS A GRAND TOTAL OF 313 COCKTAILS THAT I MADE. THIS MEANS THAT ON AVERAGE I MADE 3.7 COCKTAILS A DAY, 25.9 COCKTAILS A WEEK AND 103.6 COCKTAILS A MONTH.
THAILAND / VIETNAM
Miles calculated through out my time travellings around Asia. During my time there, I felt transport was a significant part of my trip. I wanted to record how many miles could be covered in such a short space of time. After researching time and miles I found it was interesting to look at how speed was such an important factor when considering distance travelled and time taken to reach a destination. I used several means of transport during my time there which gave me the information needed to create these posters.
Contextualising Practice Three Initial Ideas My initial interests for my dissertation include looking into image and representation associated within the magazine industry. I have chosen this topic as it really interests me and I feel I would engage with my dissertation the most if I enjoy the subject. I have always had a passion for editorial design so feel if I love the subject I should definitely pursue it as a dissertation topic. I will now go on to research all the issues relating to my subject and the people, theories and methodologies that could be of use. This idea could change as I will also go on to look at colour theory and semiotics as the basis for my extended essay.
IF YOU CAN READ THIS,
PRINT AIN’T DEAD.
CONTEXTUALISING PRACTICE.
Is print dead? A question pondered over, time after time by graphic designers the world over. Certainly an interesting question, or theory rather, that has me thinking whether it might actually become true one day. The stats do argue otherwise, with 88% of people question, saying that they would prefer a physical, printing piece of information to read, however saying something and following through with it are two very different things. Most would argue that it is the internet which is responsible for the down fail of printed design, but at the same time the internets big players, the likes of Asos, Style and even Google themselves, yes Google, are now publishing print magazines, using traditional media to refresh the parts of their business model that other solutions can’t reach. When you look at the situation from this point of view the idea of printed magazines becomes something that cannot be instantly copied or emulated, an interesting idea.
A BRIEF INSIGHT TO MY THOUGHTS AND IDEAS REGARDING CP3
Is this the new poster?
The topic has much room for exploration, it all depends on what angle you look at it from? For now, i’m sitting on the fence.
Contextualising Practice I have decided to look into how technological advances have changed the face of design. I have an interest in how skills such as screen printing and letterpress used to be major contributors to design but now with the aid of easy to use software , useful skills such as screen printing are favoured less.
ADVERTISING USES IN THE MODERN WORLD FOR MY CP3 PROJECT, I WANT TO LOOK AT ADVERTISING IN THE MODERN WORLD, SPECIFICALLY THE USAGE AND EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MEDIUMS, WHETHER IT BE A PRINT IN AN EDITORIAL OR A SET OF DIGITAL VIDEOS THAT GO VIRAL. I’M ALSO TOYING WITH THE IDEA OF LOOKING INTO THE ADS THEMSELVES AND HOW THEY’RE RELEASED INTO THE WORLD. FOR EXAMPLE, FILMS DOING REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE PIECES FOR PUBLIC REACTION. WITH THIS, I INTEND TO GO ON TO SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING WITHIN ADVERTISING, LOOKING SPECIFICALLY AT THE ETHICS OF THIS KIND OF ADVERTISING. 40
CONTEXTUALISING PRACTICE
Thoughts for Contextulising Practice so far : Colour : Colour is something I’ve always been interested in, its something that I’d enjoy looking into, to learn about the psychology of colour and its influences in art as well as it’s uses. Editorial Magazines : I’ve this is my first choice, but I’d like to find one aspect of this subject as I feel its to broad. Editorial Magazines are the reason I became interested in a Graphic Design degree so I think it’d be interesting to finish on this and see my final outcome after the 3 years.
