Urban Agriculture Agora. Food Security for Belfast.
Location: Queen’s Quad, Administration Building, Belfast Duration: 19.09.22 - 14.12.22 Studio: Use/Reuse
I.I Urban Agriculture Agora
Year Three Semester One
This project is a self-sufficient food network where every vacant plot in Belfast is fully planted, leading the way towards food security in the city. In Queen’s University’s quad, the administration building’s concrete frame is reused to accommodate a sustainable food and events hub. Its façade is designed to be the central mechanism of the plant growing stage. Behind glass panels in CLT portal frames, a series of pulleys is integrated, vertically transporting food in its growing phase. The hub itself has two environments: a less-controlled open production hall that encloses an environmentally contained lecture and kitchen space.

Design Process: Spatial studies employing Hogarth’s Line of Beauty to tailor a space to ritual proxemics A
Belfast is undergoing radical change. New development plans will overrule current built conditions by focusing on demolition rather than breathing new life into the existing architecture. Those create opportunities for third places through their loose programming. With the influx of people in Belfast’s city centre, the longing for a brief private or quiet moment becomes widespread. Space for civic gatherings becomes a necessity – found through cherishing and adapting existing built heritage. The City Living Room proposes to be a civic gesture adapting Bank Square’s prominent former Bank Building to a third place where people can establish a feeling of belonging. This project manifests itself to be a celebration of the ordinary - in all its glorious variations.

Breathing in the enchanted space filled by laughter, the smell of freshly brewed tea and colourful light beams breaking through the stained glass windows.
Lunging back for one last set of reps, the red pilates ball pressed behind the knee, facing the uneven brick wall, fixed with sparkling mortar, and the scented candles filling the air.
Feeling the warmth of the sun rays hitting the red brick illuminating the corridor whilst tracing the dark wood handrails walking into the darkness. Hearing play rehearsals in the distance.
Away from the rest of the world in the naturally heated space, misty atmospheres wrapping around the body, drunk by the eclectic scents emitted by the plants growing in brightness.
