Where does your fish really come from?
When it comes to Frozen at Sea Fish, everyone has their favourite. From skin on or skinless, to bone in or boneless, not to mention the range of sizes, from 3oz to 32+ oz. We really are spoilt for choice! Then comes the preference of which vessel it comes from, Snaefell, Polonus, Kirkella, the list is endless. All of these vessels are registered to a different country, all of which display the country of origin proudly on the box.
But where is the fish actually caught? Common belief is that the name of the country displayed on the box is where the fish originates, however this is very rarely the case. Cod and Haddock live in low temperatures and icy waters, so if your catch is boxed up and labelled “product of Spain”, surely it can’t have been caught in the Mediterranean Sea? The truth is, the country of origin on the box doesn’t refer to the product inside, it actually only refers to where a vessel is registered. For example, The Kiel is registered in Germany therefore displays ‘product of Germany’ on the box. The fish inside the box is caught, filleted, packed and frozen all in the middle of the Barents Sea.
Most vessels, whether they are registered in Spain, Russia, Poland or Iceland, actually fish in exactly the same waters. In fact, they occasionally fish so close to each other, they actually cross paths. A high percentage of all Frozen at Sea Fish is caught in the Barents Sea, also known as area 27. It’s a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, located just off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia. The Barents Sea’s icy conditions are a perfect habitat for Cod and Haddock to thrive, meaning all trawlers that fish here, rarely leave without a fruitful catch.

Team News...
We’re proud to be recognised as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Frozen at Sea Fish, with an award-winning reputation to match. Our success is largely down to that fact we work with the top vessels in the Frozen at Sea industry, having built up strong relationships with major brands over the last four decades. It was internationally renowned Icelandic company, Samherji, who first started working with us back in 1988, with their Icefresh brand. Over the years, the two companies have enjoyed great success working and growing alongside each other and today, the Samherji group supplies us with many brands such as: Kirkella from UK, Baldvin and Kiel from Germany, Polonus from Poland, Lodairo and Barca from Spain and Santa Princesa from Portugal. As well as Samherji, we have forged strong relationships with other well-known suppliers and are fortunate enough to be provided Frozen at Sea Fish by companies such as Normarine (Geir), Eurofish Trading (Korund and Taurus), Ocean Trawlers (Atlantika) and Fishproducts Iceland Limited (Viking). Working with an array of vessels, means all our customers enjoy the option of a variety of well recognised products, at competitive prices. “One man’s meat is another man’s poison, which is why we work with a multitude of brands,” said Richard. “We pride ourselves on being bespoke because we are able to offer our customers exactly what they want. We wouldn’t have grown into the company we are today without having this ethos.
“When we started working with Samherji, the company had one vessel but now it is recognised around the globe, employing over 700 staff. Like Collins Seafoods, it has grown significantly and it’s been fantastic to see both businesses develop together.” Last year, we secured delivery of Frozen at Sea Fish from The Kirkella – the first British white fish trawler to launch this century. This vessel is the most up to date of the fleet partnered with our company and so far, she has lived up to her name and reputation. Successful collaborations between ourselves and the finest names in the industry, means we have continued to supply the finest Frozen at Sea Fish to customers of all sizes. We boast an impressive repertoire, from independent establishments and fine-dining restaurants, to international wholesalers such as Brakes Group - one of Europe’s leading foodservice providers. We’re looking forward to continuing to build on these strong relationships and the foundations of the company, ensuring the quality of the fish, the sourcing of the fish and customer service remain the best around.

Caroline completes Leeds Half Marathon Talking about her great achievement, On May 8th, Wraggs’ Accounts Administrator, Caroline, got her running shoes Caroline said: “I wanted to help raise money and awareness of this horrible disease. on to take part in the Leeds Half Marathon. For what was her first ever Half Marathon, Caroline decided to run for the Alzheimer’s Society - the fight against Dementia. This is a charity close to her heart, as her grandmother is now living in a care home suffering with Vascular Dementia. Having only previously run in 10k marathons Caroline made many sacrifices to ensure she got to the end, which included upping her training and giving up wine at the weekends leading up to the run.
“It was very emotional at the finishing line and I felt proud of myself, firstly for finishing and secondly for raising £480.00. “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me raise such a great amount by donating on my just giving page. Wraggs/Collins gave a generous donation as a company but so did individual work colleagues, from the office staff at Collins and drivers at Wraggs, not to mention friends and family.”

The Tour de Yorkshire swept the region by storm and obviously Wraggs wanted to join in the fun, so we decided to donate a box of fish to the Barwick in Elmet village party. Hundreds of children took part in a bike race and were rewarded for their efforts with a delicious meal of our Frozen at Sea Fish and chips. There was also plenty of fun to be had for the adults, including a BBQ, beer tent, disco and live music.
