Northmavine is an enterprising place with a huge variety of local businesses from the wonderful community shops, talented artists and crafts people to market gardening and aquatic pets! This guide has been created to showcase what can be found right on our doorstep.

KELLY ROBERTSON

Kelly is based in Ollaberry and creates beautiful one off pieces using mixed media, paint and ink. Her paintings and drawings are inspired by the amazing Shetland landscape and seascape. Her pieces come in a range of sizes and she also does commissions.

ESM É WILCOCK

Local silversmith Esmé Wilcock creates completely unique silver and gold pieces inspired by Shetland’s sea and shore. Taking the skills Esmé had learnt through blacksmithing, she transferred them to silver and although it’s been a very bumpy road she has never looked back. She still does off and on work with her dad, yet her heart and place is with her Groatie Buckie’s and casting them.

Each Groatie Buckie that she makes is individually cast in beach sand, using a traditional sand casting technique. Esmé usually includes the original shell with the gold or silver piece she has cast it from. Esmé also creates beautiful pieces using seaglass and pottery found on the beaches.

BRAEWICK CAFE & WIGWAMS

The Braewick Cafe is in Eshaness and offers quality local produce and local handmade crafts with a fantastic view of the Drongs. They also offer a fully serviced camping and caravan site, offering everything you need for the perfect Eshaness escape.

Why not treat your friends or family with a Braewick Cafe voucher this Christmas. These vouchers can be enjoyed in the cafe or used for the wigwams and camp site.

OLACH DESIGNS

If you are looking for a new knitting pattern to either knit yourself or give as a gift Olach Designs have you covered! Mandy is based in Ollaberry and creates beautiful knitting patterns using Shetland yarn.

A new pattern for this year is the Kaleyard Beanie with the money going to Growing Local Northmavine group.

ROBYN AND MARIA ROBERTSON

Robyn and Maria live in Eshaness and enjoy knitting and crafting with felted Fair Isle knitwear. They create a wide variety of items including decorations, keyrings, hats, headbands, cards and tablet covers. Most of the knitwear they work with is remnants from Jamieson’s mill in Sandness, but sometimes they use old garments too, felting them to create a variety of decorations.

DA BARN

Da Barn is a working nursery, based in Hillswick. We grow from seed and propagate cuttings to ensure our plants are suitable for the Shetland climate.

During the autumn/winter season we have a range of trees, shrubs and perennials available along with our new selection of house plants, gift planters and potted bulbs. We offer gift vouchers with the facility for you to choose the value allowing you to tailor it to your budget. When the weather is reasonable it’s always well worth visiting us but particularly during the spring/summer season when the tunnels are bursting with colour and we have fresh produce, grown on site, available to buy. We have plenty of giftable treats suitable for garden lovers all year round.

GOOD GUB SOAP

Based in Hillswick, Alison creates a range of small batch soap. Using glycerin, Good Gub Soap comes in a variety of scents perfect for men or women and great stocking filler. There is even one that looks like an orca!

MERLA DESIGNS

Merla Designs is based in Ollaberry and makes beautiful handmade wreaths using a variety of materials including yarn, felt and artificial flowers. Each wreath is unique and a perfect gift for any occasion. Lauren also does commissions.

John Jamieson is based in Hillswick making various sized milking stools and other items from recycled wood with a nice rustic finish.

POLYCRUB

The Polycrub is a Polytunnel/greenhouse hybrid designed in Northmavine, Shetland more than a decade ago to withstand high wind and harsh climates.

The Polycrub range includes the 4m wide Polycrub Classic; the 3m wide Peerie Polly and the Polycrub Opyl, suitable for storage and small-scale livestock or poultry. A great idea as an alternative gift this Christmas.

The Polycrub company is a trading arm of Northmavine Community Development Company, and profits generated benefit the Northmavine community. The recycling facility at Bruckland is one example of how profits have been used. NORTH ROE POTTERY

North Roe Pottery offers a wide selection of ceramic products perfect for gifts. Sharon hand makes buttons, plates, bowls, mugs, jugs and gifts inspired by the colours, landscape and traditions of Northmavine.

Based in Burravoe, North Roe, Sharon has a small shop in one of the old byres on their croft where you can view all the beautiful ceramic items she makes. You

HELEN ROBERTSON

Helen Robertson is based in Sullom and offers a range of unique gifts such as jewellery and knitting classes.

Helen’s jewellery is inspired by Shetland with collections drawing inspiration from aerial archaeology, silver birch which crosses the Atlantic from Canada and knitting motifs found in countries across Scandinavia.

Helen designs and teaches a range of knitting classes online. Her two most popular classes are Wire Knit Lampshade and FISS Knitting.
