There is something about visiting a new place, eating like a local, experiencing the area’s activities and creating your own adventures that makes life that much richer. Which is why my team and I decided to gather our travel itineraries and photos to create this extraordinary capsule collection just for you. This year we are pleased to present to you our very first travel book in the Carolina STYLE Book collections, Southern Weekend Wanderlust. We’ve visited some of the south’s best small towns for lighthouse climbing, wine making and bourbon blending (my personal fav). We visited America’s oldest city for ghost hunting and tried our hand at skeet shooting in the low country. We swam with dolphins, stayed in mammoth mansions on the beach and made memories that will last a lifetime. Amazing, right? Now it’s your turn. We hope that you use our itineraries enclosed in this special edition collectible to get out of town and have your very own Southern Weekend Wanderlust experience. It is our mission at STYLE to help you look, feel and LIVE your best life. There is never a better time than now. Cheers to new adventures and living life to the fullest. Happy Traveling!

A LUXURIOUS VACATION GETAWAY

As Experienced by: Jameka Whitten

M

Most Americans yearn for a nice sunny weekend getaway. As far as the beautiful state of Florida goes, you have plenty of choices: Miami, Orlando, Hallandale, just to name a few. When the opportunity came for a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, a typical run of the mill mini-vacay was expected, complete with palm trees, great weather and blue skies of course. St Augustine is anything but typical luxurious accommodations and decadent gourmet fare—with a few surprises thrown in along the way. For those unaware of the incredible history of this quaint and charming city, it has earned the moniker of being the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and AfricanAmerican origin in the United States. That means the city was established 42 years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock (for those who were calculating). DAY 1 ACCOMMODATIONS If you arrive by plane, please keep in mind that St. Augustine is a 45-minute to an hour car ride from the airport, depending on traffic, so either hiring car service or getting a rental is the best way to go. We were hosted by the good people

at Casa Monica Resort & Spa, right in the heart of downtown St. Augustine and overlooking Matanzas Bay. They served up a heavy dose of southern charm and Old World royal treatment. Casa Monica is St. Augustine’s only AAA Four-Diamond accommodation and is a popular attraction among tourists and locals alike. The property has 138 exquisite guestrooms and suites and is beautifully decorated. It’s like staying in an authentic castle (but with all the modern amenities.) And after a long day of traveling, Casa Monica guest rooms do not disappoint. All rooms are custom designed—spacious, clean, comfortable and modern but accentuated expertly with classical furnishings complete with gold accents and plush red velvet tufted headboards. If fitness is your thing, Casa Monica has a 24-hour fitness center including cardio machines, custom-programmed music and other amenities. There is also an outdoor pool, perfect for swimming or lounging. Casa Monica itself has a fascinating back story, which we learned all about on the rooftop of the nearby Lightner Museum during a champagne welcome reception shortly after arriving. The property was first opened by Franklin W. Smith on January 1, 1888 with a whopping three guests. A few months later Henry Flagler purchased the hotel from Smith for $325,000, promptly changing the name from Casa Monica to Hotel Cordova. The hotel closed in 1932, was purchased again in 1962, and would then serve as the County Courthouse for next 30 years. Hotelier Richard C. Kessler, chairman and CEO of The Kessler Collection, acquired the hotel in 1997. Two years and 10 million dollars later, it was fully restored in 1999 and back to being Casa Monica Resort & Spa with all the grandeur the name implies.

A CULINARY JOURNEY After settling into your room, dinner at Costa Brava, Casa Monica’s premier restaurant, is a must. Chef Fred Mero prepared a feast where

each course was accompanied by crafted beer from Ancient City Brewery. Everything was superbly prepared. And they can cater to a variety of dietary needs, including vegan and vegetarian options. The meze-style menu features fresh and flavorful coastal cuisine, perfect for sharing with family and friends. The creative cocktail menu as well as extensive (and impressive) wine list makes every meal a celebration at Costa Brava.

DAY 2 TASTE AND TOUR After a deliciously healthy breakfast from room service, you should prepare for a day of sightseeing fun. We explored Historic St. Augustine via The Tasting Tour, a culinary sightseeing experience by horse-drawn carriage. We made stops at four favorite eateries: Athena Restaurant, Gaufres & Goods, The Floridian and Café Alcazar where great food and wine from around the world was in abundance. Our tour guide Aaron, who was engaging and entertaining while giving us some interesting historical facts on St. Augustine, comes highly recommended.

BLANK CANVAS Back at the hotel, you can unwind with a personalized art lesson by the pool where you can create your own original masterpiece. Speaking of art, Casa Monica is also home to the Grand Bohemian Gallery. The Gallery features local, regional and internationally recognized artists. From paintings and sculptures, to handbags and jewelry, there is something for everybody to enjoy. You can often find rare and original pieces of art in the gallery that can make memorable gift items.

LOCAL SPIRITS No day in St. Augustine is complete without a tour of the St. Augustine Distillery. At the end of our tour, after learning all the ends and outs, we watched the mixologists work magic with the distillery’s own vodka, rum, gin and whiskey. Getting to taste a “Florida Mule” was one of the highlights of the tour.

FLORIDA FLAVORS Next up was a casual dinner at the adjacent Ice Plant bar and restaurant (aptly named because the building is a former 1920s ice plant); the farm to table cuisine was hearty and delicious. Most importantly the creative crafted cocktails were so very good. It’s a great spot for happy hour or to chill with a group of friends for dinner and/or drinks.

GHOSTS AND GRAVESTONES You can end the evening with a campy yet fun “Ghosts & Gravestones” haunted trolley tour. A perfect activity if you are traveling with kids or the leading ladies from the Ghostbusters movie remake. Hear accounts of long gone residents who can still be seen in numerous locations around the city. The tumultuous past transcends into the present as we travel through the ancient city. The stories you’ll hear come from years of research, personal accounts and haunting real-life experiences.

ordered. Other notable treatments to try include the hot stone silvretta massage, herbal poultice massage, lavender peppermint scalp treatment and aqua gel facial masque.

ALL ABOARD What happened next is a scene right out of a luxurious dream. The next few hours were spent sailing on Captain David Wilson’s Semper Fi catamaran exploring the waterfront while sipping on bubbly. You can have your own adventure at sea with DEA Charters, rest assured that Captain David and his staff are the perfect hosts.

EXPLORE NEW HEIGHTS Once on shore, we had a lot more sightseeing to do. We took a tour of The St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, which houses the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP). We then climbed all 219 steps of one of the oldest active lighthouses in Florida. The view is awe inspiring. Make sure to pack some comfortable shoes and keep yourself hydrated to tackle those steps!

Day 3

FIRE!

BREAKFAST ANYONE?

Visit Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States and see an authentic reenactment and cannon firing. The Castillo de San Marcos symbolizes the clash between cultures which ultimately resulted in our uniquely unified nation. Still resonant with the struggles of an earlier time, these original walls provide tangible evidence of America’s grim but remarkable history.

Get your day started with a quick breakfast at Café Cordova. The European style café is a casual extension of the hotel’s 95 Cordova, where both hotel guests and locals can enjoy the sights and sounds of the plaza on the terrace while sipping on a cappuccino or nibbling on a pastry. Café Cordova offers a wide array of food ranging from light breakfasts, bagels or pastries, signature sandwiches (including possibly the best Cuban sandwich in St. Augustine), soups and salads, and beverages (wine, beers, teas and Starbucks coffee.)

RELAX, RELATE, RELEASE After breakfast, spend the remainder of the morning being pampered with the best 50-minute full body massages ever at Poseidon Spa. Here’s a tip: get aromatherapy with your treatment—a Swedish massage with lavender was just what the doctor

BOHEMIAN FLAVORS Dinner later that night was in a gorgeous setting, we dined in the Sultan’s private dining room at Costa Brava. Chef Mero again worked wonders and took us through a flavorful and imaginative culinary journey, expertly pairing each course with the ideal wine.

DESSERT AND LIBATIONS After dinner, you know it’s a must to make room for dessert. We moved to Casa Monica’s Cobalt

Lounge for not one, not two, but three types of sangria and an array of sweet delicacies that made everyone’s mouth water. There is always something to enjoy in the lounge whether it is a fine handcrafted cocktail or listening to live jazz performed by the region’s most soughtafter musicians. The lounge is great for those who truly like the finer things in life— top shelf liquor, a fine scotch, an incredible glass of wine or even a specialty coffee drink, best enjoyed by candlelight and surrounded by the lounge’s exquisite artwork. Simply put, there is no doubt that you will be extremely reluctant to leave such a wonderful hotel and intriguing city. The beautiful lobby, in house art gallery, spa, outdoor pool, fine dining restaurant, a happening bar/lounge and casually chic café all help to make this the perfect spot to call home while exploring all the treats St. Augustine has to offer. Casa Monica and St. Augustine is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, a destination wedding, family excursion or even a girls/guys trip. This is one of the more casual of Key West restaurants, but it’s a great place to relax and enjoy live entertainment.

Situated just south of St. Augustine in seemingly undiscovered Palm Coast, Hammock Beach Resort delivers an unspoiled haven, presenting true luxury nestled among stunning lakes, natural preserves and lush flora. As Experienced by: Erin L. Hubbs

Hammock BEACH RESORT AN UNSPOILED HAVEN

H

Hammock Beach Resort is a short drive north of the Daytona International Airport. Along the drive you will enter a private well planned multifamily community noticing the care given to preservation of nature. The buildings are tucked into the landscape accommodating biking and walking trails. Upon arriving to the main building of Hammock Beach Resort I saw what the locals tout as the ‘Pink Castle’. The building is a lovely shade of pink that melts from the sky to the sand with greetings of splashing water and the resort sta welcoming you to a full home away from home. ACCOMMODATIONS Hammock Beach Resort is designed for gatherings of friends and families, with 330 villas and suites ranging from 700 to 2,350 square feet spread out over six locations on the resort. Rooms range from boutique hotel style studios to four bedroom suites with designer carpet, a soothing coastal color palate, premium bedding, sophisticated marble entry and bathrooms with dual vanities, walk-in showers and large garden tubs. The open balcony views of the ocean make immediate unpacking impossible as you will want to spend most of your first few hours staring at the beach.

COASTAL CUISINE Later in the evening I joined a Coastal Cuisine themed, family-style dinner in a three bedroom suite boasting indoor and outdoor dining. The onsite chefs created unique bites such as roasted vegetables with fresh dip, to exquisite sushi topped with pineapple and caviar making the first evening’s experience one to repeat. This is an excellent idea for a first event if you are visiting with family and friends.

DAY 2 BREAKFAST ON THE DELFINOS PATIO Having a balcony with a view of the ocean I opted to make in room coffee and greet the morning with a breeze. Afterwards I dropped by the patio at Delfinos, an Italian dining spot on the property, for a complete breakfast that included custom crepes with fresh fruit toppings. The views from the patio offered visuals of the Grand Event Lawn with lush landscape and sweeping palms reaching past the golf course to the ocean and sky. Being lured into both nature and the architecture I decided to map the additional amenities such as onsite golf (including mini golf), the spa, bikes for rent and walking trails.

PALM COAST PICNIC Take in the sun and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you by having a picnic near the golf course. Ocean and pool views, sandwiches, pasta, green salads, vegetables and desserts are a great way to take a breath, relax and unwind.

DAY TRIP TO ST. AUGUSTINE Just a 30 minute drive will take you to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the United States. The city is known for its Spanish colonial architecture, delightful historic district, eateries, cobblestone streets, and historical landmarks including the Lightner Museum and Castillo de San Marcos.

LIGHTNER MUSEUM The Lightner Museum is housed in the former Alcazar Hotel built in 1888 by Henry Flagler.

Today it is home to one of the best collections of fine and decorative 19th century art in the country. The eclectic collection ranges from a mummy, shrunken heads and other oddities to beautiful fine art paintings. You may even hear a story or two about the legend of the Fountain of Youth which, as the story goes, makes its home in St. Augustine.

CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, the Castillo de San Marcos is a large Spanish stone fortress built to protect and defend Spain’s claims in the New World. It’s a 315 year old National Monument, the oldest structure in St. Augustine. The fort, turned monument, is one of the foundations of St. Augustine. There’s plenty to explore at the Castillo, from the numerous rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners, to the large interior courtyard and gun deck which offers a great view of the city.

DINNER AT MICHAEL’S TASTING ROOM To top off the day trip in St. Augustine, the perfect dinner selection was Michaels Tasting Room, a casual fine dining experience. The restaurant rightfully boasts of serving in season local food focusing on Spanish Mediterranean Cuisine paired with seasonal wines. You’ll find Michaels Tasting Room on the scenic Calle Cuna, in the heart of Historic Downtown St. Augustine.

GHOSTS AND GRAVESTONES: GHOST TOUR With St. Augustine being the oldest city in the United States of America why not continue the evening with a guided ghost tour. Actually it’s the perfect excuse to visit historic locations at night. Board the “Trolley of the Doomed” and visit Potter’s Wax Museum Chamber of Horrors for a unique retelling of the famed pirate Andrew Ranson’s gruesome execution. Enter the town’s most haunted building, the “Old Jail,” for an up close and personal encounter or the Old Drug Store for the secrets to hauntings that have plagued the Old Drug Store from the time it first opened in 1887.

LOGGERHEADS AT HAMMOCK BEACH RESORT fter a full afternoon in St. ugustine and definitely after the ghost and gravestones tour) stop into the lobby for cigars and maybe one more spirit at Loggerheads. ffering an expanded pub menu Loggerheads—Hammock Beach’s comfortable and well-appointed gastropub—features small batch bourbons, local craft beers, cocktails, billiards and a giant sixteen-foot TV screen.

DAY 3 MARINELAND DOLPHIN ADVENTURE The following morning I enjoyed my tradition of sipping coffee and watching the sunrise. With the full ensuite kitchen you can cook breakfast yourself or order up a few tasty items from the in room dining menu. My first excursion for the day was Marineland, an interactive marine conservation center with a deep history in Hollywood film production. Considered a classic Floridian attraction, it’s the world’s first oceanarium with the facility’s main focus being marine research and conservation. You can choose to spend five minutes with dolphins on land touching and feeding them or five hours fully immersing yourself in the water as a trainer for a day.

PLAY LIKE A PRO CONSERVATORY GOLF LESSONS On the agenda was a private golf lesson with the Director of Golf at the award winning Conservatory Course, one of the two signature golf courses at Hammock Beach Resort. Prior to the private golf lesson, a golf cart tour of the meandering paths tucked into a rich preserved landscape is a must. The 140 acres of dramatic elevation includes nearly 76 acres of manmade lakes and three waterfall features.

LINKS AND LUNCH AT THE TERRACE Tucked into one of the sides of the Conservatory’s two story clubhouse is the restaurant aptly named The Terrace offering healthy non complicated food selections for lunch. Seating is available indoors in the dining room or overlooking the pool

and Preserve. Menu items include shrimp & grits, local seafood, prime cuts of beef, farm fresh offerings and an extensive by the glass wine list.

SPA-LA-LA This is an activity I would absolutely recommend making a tradition each time you visit. The very professional staff at the spa welcomed me as I discovered a spa visit is just as important as sipping coffee and watching the sunrise (for me anyway). It’s a full service 10,000 square foot oasis with 11 treatment rooms including: five massage rooms (two solely for couples), three facial rooms, a wet room, pedicure room, manicure room and a hair salon. Each locker room features an inhalation room, sauna and steam room for any guest to use, with no appointment required. I left the spa feeling confident and relaxed after my facial.

SEASIDE WINE & DINE AT DELFINOS After relaxing at the spa the night continued with dinner onsite at Delfinos restaurant featuring delicious Italian cuisine and wine pairings from their extensive vino vault. With a multiple course meal including locally harvested foods presented by the chef, it’s difficult to admit this is the final evening in the warm surroundings of this beautiful resort. As I continued to sip coffee during the final event I thought about the fantastic time I had over the past few days at what I hope to be an annual tradition and my home away from home. After just one visit at Hammock Beach Resort, you’ll want to make it an annual destination as well.

Champions RETREAT

It’s the perfect intersection of service and solitude, realized in handsome cottages dotting a beautiful stretch of land hugging the banks of the Savannah River.

As Experienced by: Dana Farrior

A

At Champions Retreat, the value of downtime is understood and delivered in its highest and truest form. To truly escape and completely recharge is only possible when you know everything, down to the smallest detail, is given the finest care. DAY 1 ACCOMMODATIONS Wind down in one of the charming cottages offered on the property each accommodating anywhere from four to eight couples. The spacious quarters include sweeping windows overlooking breathtaking views of the retreat, pronounced fireplaces and fully e uipped state of-the-art kitchens. Comfort is at the core of each residence, providing living rooms dressed with refined designer furniture and expansive windows allowing for sweeping views of the retreat. Bedrooms come complete with luxurious King sized beds, crisp linens, generous closet space ceiling fans and vast second oor views of the property. Bathrooms feature jetted tubs, fully glassed walk in showers, pedestal sinks and designer amenities. Comfortable and charming fireplaces fire pits and porches complement the

rustic sensibilities of these smartly designed, arcadian homes. Your stay in one of the beautiful cottages doesn’t have to end once your visit concludes. You can also own a piece of Champions retreat by purchasing a cottage or building on one of the available lots.

THE BARN AT CHAMPIONS RETREAT Evans, Georgia, is the home of the newly christened Barn at the Champions Retreat Golf Club, an allinclusive, rustic-chic venue which serves as a backdrop to the quintessential southern wedding or the exceptional corporate event. The 10,000 square foot space touts a banquet hall, private dining room, green room (great for a bridal ready room) and a lounge. The Barn at Champions Retreat is an idyllic location for hosting corporate events, luxurious weddings, black-tie dinners, or just a good oldfashioned party. When choosing the picturesque private club as the setting for your nuptials, you and your guest are then given complete access to all that Champions Retreat has to offer making it the perfect southern getaway.

ELEVATED LOW COUNTRY BOIL After settling into your cottage, you and your guests will have a chance to gather for one of the many meals overseen by Director of Food & Beverage Doug Snyder and accompanied by pit master Hal Rowland.Between the two culinary knockouts they have more than 30 years of experience. That premise of this elevated low country boil is delivered upon by taking Southern culinary traditions and pushing them into new and unexpected places. Thoughtful pairings of classic and rising wines along with brilliant libations create a delectable experience for you and your guests.

AFTER DINNER ACTIVITIES A great way to have your guest get to know each other is with a bit of friendly competition. Evening putting lit by the glow of strategically arranged golf carts makes for an interesting handicap to say the least. This is just one of the ways Champions Retreat creates a unique

experience. Even if you’re a novice golfer it’s hard not to have a good time.

BREAKFAST & BOGIES The focal point of this weekend (other than a family or corporate gathering) would have to be the three uniquely designed golf courses that sit on the Champions Retreat property. Nestled along the Savannah River, three of golf’s greats – Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player – came together to construct a singularly distinct experience in the world of golf. Never before have these three collaborated on a course, making Champions Retreat a singularly unique experience in the world of golf. Player decided to handle the designation of the properties scientifically, writing “Island,” “Creek” and “Bluff” on the back of three index cards. Palmer, being the senior of the group and having played in more Masters than Nicklaus or Player, chose first drawing the sland card. icklaus drew second since he had won more green jackets than layer and pulled the luff card leaving layer with the “Creek.” The legends designed nine signature holes of championship golf together, sculpting from the foundation of more than 365 acres of skyward Georgia pines, long-standing hardwood and wetlands. Champions Retreat is the realization of their collective vision. Even first time players can appreciate the breathtaking views and impeccably maintained natural topography. Champions’ sustainability efforts allow you to revel in all its pure beauty while coexisting within nature. For those who wish to take a lesson, head golf professional, Mike Rymer is more than happy to teach novice and improve the more experienced, all while making you feel at ease.

THE SPA TREATMENT After playing a couple holes or if you’re more into spa treatments than golfing, professional masseuses are ready to knead out those tough, achy spots. In addition to massages, there is a team prepared to give facials and other spa related treats, all in the comfort of your own cottage.

The Golf Village Courtyard

The Grille House Night Center

PROGRESSIVE DINNER & TOUR OF THE BARN If golf is the lifeblood of Champions Retreat then camaraderie is its soul. Priding themselves on building and maintaining relationships, Champions uses the dinner table to solidify these connections. The manifestation of this is the progressive dinner, described as an innovative approach to the family style meal. The progressive dinner could make for a creative alternative to the usual rehearsal dinner if you are considering the property for a wedding. While you move through each room you will taste taste perfectly paired hors d’oeuvres and cocktail, ultimately, finishing up in the grand dining hall. Champions Retreat understands the importance of relationships. That is the reason so much onus is put on providing the perfect atmosphere to create them. The recipe for a solid event is equal parts grace and generosity. These are the foundations upon which any gathering at Champions Retreat is built. Success is measured in making memories that last with the people that matter most. Lexington KENTUCKY

M

My preconceived notions of a smalltown with dusty bourbon bottles and the occasional horse galloping by was absolutely incorrect. Lexington is a thriving art, entertainment, and culinary community rich in historical value, well planned infrastructure, and an array of majestic pastures lined with fences. Lexington, Kentucky truly is a multilayered modern city. ACCOMMODATIONS While in Lexington, stay at the modern 21c Museum Hotel in downtown. This 88-room boutique hotel features a contemporary art museum, a cultural center, and the Lockbox, a renowned restaurant led by Chef Jonathan Searie. When entering 21c Museum, the hotel welcomes you in with beautifully curated art pieces surrounding its walls giving you a modernized feel with the comfort of home. Once into my suite I noticed the sweeping views of Lexington. I promptly tore into my welcome package to plan my next few days of city exploration. With 21c Museum Hotel’s location in the heart of Lexington, it was easy to explore downtown by foot. I spent the evening walking and taking in the majestic views of downtown’s cityscape. My time consisted of meeting welcoming strangers who were attending a Kentucky University home game and watching the locals ice skate in the center of town.

DAY 1 BREAKFAST AT LOCKBOX Located within 21c Museum Hotel, experience fresh, farm to table options from acclaimed chef, Jonathan Searle. His “thoughtful yet simple preparations” will leave your taste buds delighted. The menus at Lockbox showcase a deep network of local providers and the bounty of ingredients fed by Kentucky’s limestone-rich soil. With a commitment to the community’s craft purveyors, high-quality seasonal ingredients, and thoughtful – yet simple – cooking techniques, Lockbox restaurant serves dishes like a House Cracker Plate with Pimento Cheese, Pepper Jam and Chicken Liver Mousse, Cornmeal Gnocchi, Woodland Farm Cast Iron Hog Chop and Kentucky Silver Carp. The Lockbox space highlights historic features like original marble floors, decorative plaster details and large windows. Communal tables in both the dining room and lounge are ideal for large groups to dine together or for individual guests to meet new people while they dine. And while you’re there, you will notice it’s not just the food that’s creative; enjoy “Tomorrow’s Weather,” a multimedia work of art that hangs from the ceiling.

LEXINGTON FARMERS MARKET My first full day being a Saturday, I started with a visit to the Lexington Farmers Market downtown. This local favorite provides an array of produce from Kentucky farmers. From fresh meats, honey, eggs, and tomatoes there is an abundant amount of local produce to choose. Since 1975, this farmers market offers fresh local produce from mid April to late November. You can see the desire that these farmers have to bring the freshest, high quality products into their community. Understanding that some farmers markets falsely tout their local qualities, I was impressed to not only see local in season products but also organic only products available. The Lexington Farmers Market is a rarity and a must-visit when in the city.

THE MARY TODD LINCOLN MUSEUM The Mary Todd Lincoln House at 578 West Main Street was the family home of Mary Todd, the future first lady and wife of the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln. The House has been marked as a museum for 40 years now. My tour of this now well preserved home consisted of unique anecdotes from the extremely knowledgeable docents. The docents not only explained the history of Mary and her father, but also played guessing games to keep children interested too. We learned that Lincoln’s family moved into the home in 1832. This historic home included everything a history lover could desire viewing from original clothing, china, chandlers and portraits, to photographs and the furniture one of our most statuesque presidents would have used. When visiting this must see home, you’ll see why the docents keep the home in high admiration.

MEET LOCAL ARTIST & NATIVE: STACEY R. CHINN

LEXINGTON

My final stop for the day turned into an amazing meeting with one of Lexington’s most sought after educators and artists, Stacey R. Chinn. Chinn is a native of Lexington and an amazing artist. Her work not only includes sculpting metal and clay, she is also a fiber artist and fashion designer. Chinn’s work reflects local abstract hints paying homage to Lexington’s famous pasture fences. Her artwork also leans towards a modern European attitude. Her studio and retail shop titled MADE K.Y., located within the historic Distillery District of Lexington, is light filled with multi levels giving this artist’s collection a distinct showing. When visiting her studio you will notice a nine foot metal sculpture, fiber art attached to a wall or beautiful jewelry. If you are anything like me, be prepared to shop and wonder what items will fit in your suitcase during your flight home.

DAY 2 My second full day turned into a wonderful experience of exploring what Lexington is known for: Bourbon, Brews and Horses.

THE PEPPER DISTILLERY DISTRICT Spend a day touring the different breweries and distilleries in the Pepper Distillery District located near downtown Lexington at the site of the original James E. Pepper distillery (which will reopen in early 2018). Pepper Campus in Lexington’s Distillery District hosts a number of different breweries, distilleries, and restaurants. Looking for a great beer? A few recommendations include Ethereal Brewing, The Chase Tap Room & Brewing, West Sixth Brewing, and Blue Stallion Brewing Company. Blue Stallion brewing specializes in the craft of European-style lagers and ales. They offer a collection of in-house local and out-of-town beers. It would be difficult to recommend any one of these locations over the other as the attitudes and ambience of each are unique but all showcase a wide ranging house blend of beer. For all of the bourbon lovers, I do recommend visiting Barrel House Distilling Company which can also be found in this area. The Barrel House Distilling Company is a must-see spot, not only for knowing more about making bourbon but also for its many bourbon infused products available as take home as gifts.

Keeneland is open to the public and visitors are welcomed year round. I would return weekly if I lived in Lexington just to dream of having this equestrian life.

ART AT 21C MUSEUM HOTEL My second full day closed with touring the public galleries of the carefully curated art collection in my hotel 21c. The galleries are open to the public day and night. You can experience the rotating galleries and exhibits of these fabulous art collections at 2p.m. or 2 a.m. I do recommend visiting as they not only host national and international artists but a few of Lexington’s local artist such as Stacey R. Chinn.

KEENELAND RACE COURSE Off to the world famous Keeneland for the Breeding Stock Sale and Art Auction. This national landmark gave me the experience of watching the world’s best horses being purchased with a slight hand gesture. Located in the heart of Kentucky’s famed Bluegrass region, Keeneland plays an important role in both Thoroughbred racing and breeding. The Crystal COAST

AN AUTHENTIC SOUTHERN COASTAL EXPERIENCE The Crystal Coast of North Carolina is a coastal destination mixed with the charm and hospitality of your favorite southern city. A totally unique experience, this gem along North Carolina’s Central Shore proves there is no place like it on earth. As Experienced by: Lisa D. Wright

T

The Crystal Coast of North Carolina is a beautiful beach destination that has a history filled with pirate adventures and ghostly encounters. Promenade through the historical streets of a quaint maritime village, feast on fresh from the docks seafood at a waterfront bistro, get a glimpse of the e otic wild horses or lounge at your beachfront mansion and take in all this beautiful island has to o er. ACCOMMODATIONS One of the beauties of spending time at The Crystal Coast is the opportunity to rent one of the many opulent homes dotting the coastline from Emerald Isle Realty. These private residences range from quaint beach cottages to mammoth beach houses known locally as “sand castles” each with fitting names such as Breezy, Camelot by the Sea and A Sea Symphony. Each home is unique with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on your needs you can find a sandcastle that has decks spacious enough for lively poolside parties, large, lavishly decorated bedrooms and bathrooms, elevators, convenient linen services and chefs kitchens large enough to make dinner for the entire family and extended family. Some homes feature playrooms for the kids and offices for the adults who just can’t leave work behind.

SUNSET LIBATIONS AT THE BARNACLE BAR After checking into your cottage or sandcastle and touring your home away from home, it’s time for the first order of business - libations. Head to the Oceanana Pier for The Barnacle Bar. Named after a legendary Atlantic Beach bar from the 1960’s, The Barnacle is an open air bar located a thousand feet offshore at the end of the Oceanana Pier. Often featuring live music, this bar is a great place to have a sunset toast or any toast for the matter.

IDLE HOUR BIERGARTEN Idle Hour Biergarten is the place you go to when you want to enjoy libations but still want to be at the beach. The restaurant is a take on a German beer garden and serves a made from scratch menu. Though the bratwurst and the view alone make this place worth the trip, they also serve native North Carolina beer, wine and cocktails. Sandwich, soup and salad lovers will enjoy this place too.

DINNER AT PESCARA WOOD OVEN KITCHEN When you are ready for dinner, Pescara is a great coastal Italian restaurant situated in a magnificently restored cedar plank home. The design aspect is remarkable featuring Carrara marble table tops, bent wood dining chairs and repurposed maritime light fixtures. It is the second oldest home in the area so you know it’s charming. If you are a spaghetti and meatballs kind of person, branch out and try the Frito Misto appetizer - it’s calamari, octopus and local fish with arrabiata sauce and lemon aioli.

DAY 2 HUNGRY TOWN CULINARY BIKE TOUR AND TASTING Your stay at this southern coastal escape doesn’t get any more charming than this. Take a short drive into the historic and quaint city of Beaufort, stop into Hungry Town Culinary Bike Tours and meet owners Betsy and David Cartier. This

husband and wife duo are your inside connection to some of the best historic tales and culinary treats the area has to offer. They have carefully crafted uniquely themed tours by foot or on bike but if you are able definitely hop on a bike. These retro-chic bicycles with clever names (like age, Rosemary, and Thyme) are your transportation to taste your way through town by peddling to the historic homes, inns and restaurants. You’ll hear the history of the city while cruising through town, then stop at a local eatery for tapas style eats. It’s truly one of the most memorable travel experiences you could have anywhere.

DINNER AT LA PERLA Advanced reservations are strongly encouraged to dine at this spanish/latin inspired, 40 seat restaurant tucked away in a residential neighborhood in Morehead City. La Perla is a casual restaurant where the food is anything but. When your palate craves a unique southern fare different from the traditional, the food here delivers just that. The Churrasco is to die for but be sure to save room for one of the desserts.

DAY 3 BOAT RIDE AROUND SHACKLEFORD BANKS Hop on the Island Express Ferry for a ride around Shackleford Banks, the southernmost barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore. It’s home to more than 100 wild horses whose ancestry dates back 400 years. Scientists, historians and nature lovers alike have speculated the origins of the Shackleford horses, or “Banker ponies” as they are called, with the most popular being that the horses swam ashore after a Spanish ship exploring the new world met with a tragic fate off of North Carolina’s shores. The horses have enjoyed the protections afforded by Cape Lookout ational Seashore in cooperation with the Foundation for Shackleford Horses. Both organizations are dedicated to maintaining the horses’ way of life.

CLIMB CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE After viewing the wild horses get ready to see a spectacular panoramic view of the beautiful

Crystal Coast on one of the few remaining natural barrier island chains in the world, accessible only by boat. When arriving to the island, take a short walk to the Cape Lookout Keeper’s Quarters built in the mid-1800’s to warn passing ships of the dangerous coastal waters. Today, this Keeper’s Quarters serves as a museum, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of Lighthouse Keepers and Surfmen of the US Life-Saving Service. Then climb the 163 feet, 207 step “Diamond Lady” lighthouse. It has a distinctive black and white diamond pattern in order to distinguish direction (North and South from East and West) and differentiate it from other North Carolina lighthouses.

LUNCH AT BEAUFORT GROCERY Providing guests with the hometown feel of a local grocery store, Beaufort Grocery’s subtle grace and charm is reminiscent of a French country eatery and adds a special southern touch by using dishrags in place of napkins. Enjoy delicately sautéed Carolina Crab Cakes served with spicy remoulade sauce and Thai Rubbed Roast Duckling served on a bed of Korean rice with pineapple-soy glaze at this cozy, captivating environment located in Beaufort’s Historic District on Queen Street. No, it’s not a grocery store in the traditional sense but who wouldn’t love a “grocery store” that has the groceries already cooked and prepared into meals.

DINNER AT AMOS MOSQUITO’S Dining at Amos Mosquito’s is like bringing the outside in. The marsh-like décor gives you the feeling of essentially being in the swamp and is perfectly situated to catch a glimpse of a glorious North Carolina sunset overlooking Bogue Sound. Amos Mosquito’s is casual fine dining offering an eclectic selection of delicious fresh catch seafood dishes. Order the seafood platter and you’ll see why it’s one of the popular must have dishes on the menu. You can also order and make s’mores right at the table. Your first visit to the Crystal Coast of North Carolina won’t be your last. It’s one of those places that you will want to visit again and again with friends, family and your significant other.
