nother fabulous year of Spring and Summer Collections are here. When I think Spring, I think STYLE
Week!
The 2nd Annual STYLE Week was a smashing success! I love this week of events because it’s the opportunity for the fashion and style community to come together and attract residents and tourists to the city to consume all things fashionable and stylish. Most importantly, we were able to raise money for and awareness of The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, an establishment very important to our city and the families it serves. I’m a major proponent of “GivingInSTYLE” The Most Stylish Event is the biggest event we do all year and it happens during STYLE Week. It is definitely one of my favorites because we have the chance to meet and celebrate the people in the Fashion, Beauty, Business, Philanthropy, Entertainment and Social communities who are making a real impact in the community. Some on the list are very well known by our readers but there are also people on the list that make our readers say “Wow, I didn’t know she lived here!”. Each year I wonder how we are going to find yet another group of stylish people to celebrate in the magazine and at our annual event, and each year we always find another fascinating group of people. One of the perks of being the EIC is the travel - I love it. We’ve traveled to various Fashion Weeks in New York and Charleston covering the trends that you’ll see in this issue.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is always an honor to attend as we had a record 70 invitations to the shows. However, Charleston Fashion Week is one of my personal favorites because the event and it’s producers don’t simply imitate a fashion week in another city. They’ve taken the idea of Fashion Week and made it unique to celebrate the charm of the south while introducing new concepts - it makes their week of events truly one of a kind. Our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter was filled with fun and fashionable photos viewed by our readers here in Charlotte and around the globe. Speaking of Charleston, we recently completed our first editorial outside of the Queen City. Charming Charleston was one of the most fun and glamour shoots I’ve attended to date. Charleston is such a beautiful and charming city and was the perfect location for the Resort 2012 shoot (Reality TV alert: our male love interest, Jay, was recently a contestant on the CBS Show Survivor). Is this real love or a beautiful distraction by Jennifer Tardy

ust as spring is in the air, so is romance! Your friends are being swept off their feet one by one and the only problem that you face today is that you are still standing upright, immovable. For some reason, you are having difficulty releasing your heart to the guy you have been dating. Yes, you are having fun with this guy, but (for some reason) you can’t seem to shake the million dollar question: Could this be love or is he simply a beautiful distraction?
TIES ARE EASILY CUT. Truth be told, ties may not have been there from the beginning. If he were to cut ties with you today, you may notice the space he occupied, but you won’t necessarily miss him. Perhaps he dropped by with movies and take out on Friday nights? You’d notice that you now have this open time, but you now feel the, “oh, well…I’ll have to do without,” feeling.
CONSIDERATION OF HIS FEELINGS IS RARE. It is rare that his feelings are thought of when you make decisions. If you choose to go to bed without giving him a call, you tell yourself that he will be okay. If he starts to complain about your behavior, it just makes you irritated. As

a matter of fact, you probably become more irritable when he does something that you told him you don’t like. You may even find yourself becoming less and less filtered the longer you two are together. You may know that you are hurting his feelings, but you just cannot seem to control the urge to let him know why he is getting on your nerves.
QUALITY TIME TAKES CONVINCING.
Unless you are used to him by now, you may find that you talk yourself into doing things like having lunch with him, going to the movies with him and spending quality time with him. Even though you know that the last date was fun, he has to really convince you (somehow) that the next date will be fun too, well – that’s if you don’t have any plans that night. Then, going out sounds like a better option than its alternative.
HE GETS MOVED TO SECOND PLACE, MOST TIMES. This is probably the easiest of all the others to recognize. When the man with “love potential” wants your time and space, Mr. Meantime gets moved to second place…immediately! When Mr. Love Potential (LP) calls, Mr. Meantime goes on hold, indefinitely. You may even find yourself breaking long standing dates with Mr.
Meantime for a last minute date with Mr. LP.
IT’S JUST NOT THERE. It is funny, but you knew this from the beginning, yet you still allowed him to share your time and space. Do you remember when the two of you first met? You could rattle off a list of reasons why this would never work! You knew that he clearly wasn’t ambitious, he wasn’t intellectually stimulating, he may not have been attractive, he may have been blatantly rude, and/or he may have seemed obviously immature. Whatever your list held, you were certain that they were deal breakers YET; somehow you were convinced to just give him one date , one lunch, or one afternoon. Girlfriends, learn to be honest with yourself and then honest with Mr. Meantime. Do your best to pay attention to the signs as early on as possible so that you are able to tell him what your real intentions are for the direction of the relationship. As you would enjoy knowing if you were Miss Meantime, you should grant him the same sense of sincerity so that he is better able to make his own decisions to stay along for the ride, or to move forward. It only makes things less complicated for both of you in the long run. Good luck to each of you!

AT HOME WITH THE ALLGAIERS by Cindy Urbanik

ustin Allgaier, Driver #31 in NASCAR’s Nationwide series, and his wife and manager Ashley feel inspired and at peace in their rare moments of downtime. The Allgaiers are young, fast paced, and on the go, but they wanted their house to be a place where they could relax and unwind in the busy travel season. The couple turned to Cindy Urbanik of Cindy Urbanik interiors a few days after closing on their new home. They had a clean slate, bringing very little from their previous apartment and wanted to make a fresh start. One piece in particular was a large piece of art from one of their travels. This piece would serve as the focal point of the living room and created the language of the room as a whole. Although beautiful, the art is oversized, cold, shiny, and hard. Everything we brought into the room would need to counterbalance and at the same time compliment the art piece so the room would not feel cold and hard overall. The first thing Urbanik selected was the rug, which is one of the softest rugs I have ever felt (the family Chihuahuas agree). This rug instantly changed the space to a more inviting,

warm, soft place. The coffee table and the end tables have a rustic worn wood which has a warm quality to it and nicely compliments the metal in the artwork. The curtains are a beautiful, smoky blue velvet and they also help bring softness to the room. Velvet can sometimes feel heavy, but the volume of the space lends itself well to this material.

The design intent with the master bedroom was peace and comfort, a place to unwind from hectic traveling and the stresses of a career in racing. The bed resembles a modern oversized version of a wingback chair. The fabric is tufted velvet and very soft. In an effort to balance masculinity and femininity in the bedroom, anodized metal nightstands were
a perfect fit against the headboard. While tufted velvet and metal are an unexpected pairing, they provide a perfect juxtaposition to one another that keeps the room from feeling too hard or too soft. The prints above the bed are all beach scenes found on Etsy.com and they add to the serene, peaceful feeling of the room.

At first glance, the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) looks more like a brand new campus dormitory with its brick facade, various balconies, and large archways. This four-story, 35,000 square foot house can accommodate up to 28 families. Although many have heard of the Ronald McDonald House, many of us don’t know what goes on behind its doors.
wanted in the colors and fabrics that would work with our space. The overall scheme is a cozy lodge feel. It’s not the bright primary colors you would expect. The parents are at the hospital all day with their kids and those rooms are decorated with them in mind. However, at the end of an emotional day we wanted parents to return to a calm, relaxing place.
Their mission is clear; “Our primary goal at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte is to provide families a safe, comfortable and supportive environment while their children receive medical treatment at nearby medical facilities.” But until today I had no idea what it took to make this mission a reality until I met Mona Johnson - Gibson, The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte’s Executive Director.
How many square feet is the house? How many bedrooms? The house is 35,000 square feet with 28 bedrooms - six of [the bedrooms] are suites for larger families. Five local interior designers volunteered to decorate the bedrooms; each took a suite and was able to get furniture and accessories donated. We even had a 15 year old decorate a suite to earn her gold badge in interior design!
Why was Charlotte the right city for a Ronald McDonald House? What were the criteria? Who provided funding? Well, its because of our incredible hospitals and specialties. We have become a destination for pediatric treatment for people from all over the world. Some physicians chose a family’s treatment plan based on whether the city has a Ronald McDonald House. Many would be surprised that the house is community funded. We have some corporate donors, but it’s very much a community effort.
What are the requirements to stay at the Ronald McDonald House? There are many misconceptions about who is eligible to stay the house. We leave those decisions to the hospital medical staff and the social workers. It depends on your diagnosis and length of stay. The main requirement is that you live outside Mecklenburg County.
What hospitals are supported by The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte? The Levine Children’s Hospital and the Hemby Children’s Hospital. Do all the Ronald McDonald Home’s look the same inside? Who decorated the house? We worked with an architect to design the house and layout. Its never what people expect when they walk in, its very warm and welcoming - not institutional. Lazy Boy Furniture donated all the furniture for the living room. They allowed us to pick the pieces we

Are there any other common misconceptions about the RMH? Staying at the house is based on need not social economic status. The other is that one or two big corporations support the RMH. We are thankful to our many corporate sponsors, but we have families and children donate money they have raised from events. We’ve had children raise money at bake sales and cookie sales and that money can add up. What would readers be surprised to know about the RMH? How gorgeous it is! People are blown away when they arrive. We have a living room with a stone fireplace and fully stocked kitchen for the families. It’s a real home away from home.
As the recipient of the proceeds from designated STYLE Week Events where do you expect the proceeds to go? To keep this place going! We rely heavily on our volunteers. We have groups volunteer every night to cook big family meals. We provide a stocked pantry and refrigerator for our families so they don’t have to worry about grocery shopping. As you can imagine, the utilities are significant to keep this 35,000 square foot house operating. We also try to provide every basic necessity a family would need from, paper towels, toilet paper, tooth brush/tooth paste, diapers, and laundry detergent. Just think about all your daily necessities and multiply that times 28 families. I have to ask this question, does McDonald’s provide food for the RMH? Right now no, but they have offered. Families and churches come to cook big meals for the families. McDonald’s provides cookies and hamburgers sometimes. But thankfully, we are booked well into May with families and churches providing nightly meals! Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte does more than provide a roof for parents of sick children. They have literally thought of every need a family may have from the playroom and playground for siblings of sick children to the Teen Room for teens. They lovingly provide a quiet space for parents to grieve or reflect in the Mediation Room. The common laundry area is a nice place for parents to bond. They also provide journals in each bedroom for families to write their feelings and experiences. These journals remain in the room giving strength and hope to the next family that reads it. Love is in all the details and the arrival of the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte on May 9, 2011 is the gift that keeps on giving. Café Monte FRENCH BAKERY AND BISTRO
C
afé Monte French Bakery and Bistro honors the sacred tradition of a leisurely yet decadent ladies’ brunch. Located in the Allen Tate building in SouthPark, owner Monte Smith has created a Parisian-style escape where mothers and daughters, girlfriends, and families can set down their heavy Nordstrom bags to dine on a plate of savory crepes. Even before noon, you can have your eggs and stuff crab and lobster in them too. The French-inspired cuisine at Café Monte is more Julia Child than textbook escargot. “We’re not your typical frou-frou type of a French restaurant,” Smith says, who has traveled to the City of Lights and around the world during his almost 30 year career. “We keep the French traditions of cooking, but we are not pretending to be French.” The blend of French and American aesthetics is at the heart of Smith’s concept of a casual café with gourmet food. The spark for Café Monte ignited in 2007, when Smith saw a need for a neighborhood dining destination with personality. “SouthPark had lots of chain restaurants at the time,” he says. “We wanted to bring a little individual flare.” Smith modeled the original concept on Amelie’s Bakery in the NoDa district, which chiefly serves bakery items. However, there was a greater desire for cuisine in SouthPark. Smith opened the restaurant in April 2008 and managed to ride out a rocky economy. Today, “things seem to be moving in the right direction,” he says. Café Monte’s menu boasts over 50 brunch, lunch, and dinner items, including the chicken

salad croissant sandwich, spinach salad, and Eggs Benedict. On the last Tuesday of every month, the restaurant hosts a wine tasting paired with a four-to-five course dinner. Chef Ben Philpott ensures that much of the ingredients come from local ranchers and farmers. Although commercial vendors must supplement high demand, Smith strives to serve local food. “We do support that as much as we can,” he says. Smith’s career in restaurants began in 1982 while living in Texas. The restaurateur, who grew up in South America, worked in the major culinary markets of Chicago, Los Angeles, and
New Orleans. He came to Charlotte 15 years ago and worked with The Palm Restaurant for 11 years. He was also the general manager for Quail Hollow Country Club. On Sunday mornings, Café Monte’s exclusive “satellite office” features a special guest chef. Smith serves up comfort food to wife Connie and their three children: whole wheat French toast and sautéed bananas with a splash of brandy or rum. “I get the most smiles out of that dish,” he says. The family man brings that personal touch to his café customers as well. “We hope they feel at home,” he says.

ucked away in the often overlooked locale of Plaza Midwood sits a quaint modest house that’s home to an eclectic mix of art, photography, handmade gifts and interior furnishings that reflect the creative cool nature of its neighborhood to a tee. MoNA, formerly Plaza Muse, opened its doors in September with a clear vision for its design aesthetic. Dan Butner, founder and owner, has worked diligently to cultivate a well-edited assortment of works from local talent, and the result is a cohesive inviting space that truly feels like home. “I wanted to create a gallery that embraced the community and had something to offer to everyone and every budget,” Butner explains. And thanks to a collaboration with several local businesses including FROCK Shop, Davidson Chocolates and Curate Home, patrons can peruse the space and shop while sipping chardonnay and sampling savory chocolate truffles. “The MoNA House is a place to come and lounge with friends and be inspired to explore your personal style,” Butner says of the gallery’s latest additions. “A decadent chocolate and sip of wine certainly work wonders on the imagination.” Visitors concur wholeheartedly. On Friday, March 30, MoNA unveiled the works of photographer Kyle Worthy. The collection, entitled “Untethered Land,” is abstract in concept. “Kyle’s work removes the context of traditional landscape realism resulting in images that capture places as they exist in memory, caught somewhere between reality and dream,” Butner explains thoughtfully. Adhering to its humble efforts to embrace the community, MoNA will join with more than a dozen McColl Center alumni to showcase an impressive assortment of work. The exhibit, “reCOLLection” will span over 2,500 square feet of gallery space. “The McColl Center is a powerhouse that gives local artists the training and tools to become successful artists. It’s no wonder that some of the area’s most sought after talent have had their residency there,” Butner says. The opening

Aware that his beloved Dr. Martens shoes aren't exactly “en vogue” today, this 36 year old asked a young salesperson concerning the demographic for his shoes. She explained, “Well, someone like you!” Bailey's fashion sense is very eclectic. His love for the earth tones of greens, blacks and browns is not only his fashion sense, but he literally exudes it. The sound that you hear from the 8 string banjo is very different, very earthy- eclectic. So tell me about your life growing up? Was music always a part of your life? I started playing at a very young age, in the 6th grade. I remember being shuffled into a cafeteria by the music teacher and trying all of the instruments. I was always drawn to the drums, but I started with the flute. I finally got to play the drums in the 1990s. Who are your musical influences? My main influences are Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Michael Buble. I like the familiarity and fringe art of these artists. I feel that even though jazz is a fringe art, it is still relevant and needs to be expressed. Jazz was built on reinterpreting classics and is an American art form that shouldn’t be overlooked. So, if I were to say that your music was

“coffee house cool music,” what would you say to me? I don’t judge the accuracy of people’s descriptions of my music. Music exists to express what can’t be put into words. That description does reflect the ethos of what I’m trying to do. I see that you play a rather unusual instrument- the 8 string banjo. Can you please elaborate on that? How did you even know about it? The 8 string banjo is the only one in its existence because I created it! I got the idea one day when I couldn’t find a bass player. After some research and fiddling with my own guitar, I decided the only way to go was to get an 8 string guitar to produce not only a guitar but a bass sound as well. The 8 string guitar had already been invented, so I researched some more and produced an 8 string banjo.

setting yourself apart is what music and life are all about. The Innocence Mission is passionate without being loud- you can be an artist and be yourself. An artist does not have to be flamboyant and extroverted as so many commonly marketed musicians are today. The music industry today is often too commercialized, although I do enjoy some of today’s commercial music.
But really, who listens to a banjo anymore? Banjos are usually characteristic of “hillbilly” folk type music, and not jazz. My philosophy is to expect the unexpected, and do what you love. Playing the 8 string banjo is extremely hard, and when I first started playing, I was often embarrassed. I had been playing the guitar for 15 years. But, when I picked up the 8 string banjo, it was like I had no idea what to do! I have implemented the 8 into my name -8rad 8ailey. My website even has the signature 8 – 8anjo.com. I am constantly reinventing myself, which I feel is what helps to set me apart from other artists.
You are also a part of a group called Mr. Nigel and Friends. Tell me about them. Well, Mr. Nigel and Friends is a band made up of four fathers who are also professional musicians and members of Steele Creek Church of Charlotte. I provide the instrumental bass. The band is something that I take part in when I’m not doing my solos, and my role is one of the “friends.” We all have children who are six and under. Our main purpose is to make music that will appeal to not only the children, but the parents as well. I have actually observed parents thinking while listening to us play, “Why am I having fun?” It’s because our music has such a great beat! Our music isn’t as kitschy as most of the children’s music today.
What is your favorite music album? I like this obscure band called The Innocence Mission. Their album, entitled “Glow,” is my absolute favorite because its sound is unique and original. Being original and

we have different opinions but it’s pretty fun. We get along well and we do almost everything 50/50 so it’s good having a partner and a teammate.”
Though fresh off of their first appearance at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Raleigh Denim is sold at major retailers including Barney’s and Saks Fifth Avenue as well as local retailers including Poole Shop (Charlotte), Vert & Vogue (Durham) and their own boutique The Curatory (Raleigh).
“We’ve both been artists for a long time so the process of making the garment is as important to us as the design of the final product,” says Victor. “We thought a lot about what the ideal pair of jeans would be: hand made and pays attention to the history and heritage of denim production in North Carolina. We use all the fabrics from Cone Mills in Greensboro, old school machines, old school construction methods but balance that with and modern details.”
arah and Victor Lytvinenko, husband and wife design duo and owners of Raleigh Denim, are on a mission to build an ideal pair of jeans. The company makes handcrafted jeans using vintage machines, which are signed by the “Jeansmith” who crafted the pair.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS “It was a personal project we didn’t really intent to start a company.” says Victor. In 2008, he had a pair of pants that he really liked and decided he would try to make them. He purchased a $25 sewing machine through Craig’s list, bought a pattern from the fabric store and started making jeans with Sarah.

“Cone Mills gave us denim that is made from recycled TV trays,” says Sarah. “We [created] a jean and a work vest for the men’s collection. We also collaborated with a label called Organic by John Patrick, where we did a drop crotch jean on for the women’s collection. It’s fun to go into the collection and experiment with interesting [materials].
“Usually it’s really fun,” says Sarah. “There is always friction, especially in the design world

MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK “It is a huge production and ours was pretty simple so it really makes us appreciate the more elaborate [shows},” says Sarah. “We had wonderful people helping us and showing us the ropes. The day of the presentation we were tired and excited and a little bit nervous.”
SARAH’S PERSONAL STYLE “It kind of goes without saying that we wear lots of denim,” Sarah laughs. I’m pretty classic but I like to have a little bit of edge combined with straight forward buttoned up things...and five inch heels.”
VICTOR’S PERSONAL STYLE “Day to day I’m pretty easy: t-shirts, jeans and tennis shoes. When we go out I do like to dress up and I wear well tailored shirts, jackets, pants and vests.”
PROJECT NEXT. CHILDREN? “I don’t know about children yet,” chuckles Victor. Sarah adds “We have a store in the front of our production facility so between that store, possibly opening our next store in NYC and launching the women’s collection, those are sort of our children right now.”
