ABOUT OUR HONOREE

CHRISTOPHER WARREN-GREEN Now in his twelfth season with the Charlotte Symphony, Music Director Christopher Warren-Green also serves as Music Director of the London Chamber Orchestra, a position he’s held since 1988. Warren-Green was born in Gloucestershire and attended Westminster City School, where he was a chorister, and later the Royal Academy of Music. A violinist by training, he began his professional career at the age of 19 as concertmaster of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, followed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. 2021-22 marks the final season of WarrenGreen’s tenure as Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony, after which he will take on the titles of Conductor Laureate and Artistic Adviser. Warren-Green will open the season with performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with Paul Huang, conduct an all-English program to celebrate the CSO’s 90th birthday, and conclude the season with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 – an appropriately spectacular finale.

4

A product of community music education, Warren-Green plays a key role in the Charlotte Symphony’s educational efforts, including the Youth Orchestras and Project Harmony, an El Sistema-based program providing afterschool music ensemble training in high-need areas. In addition to his international commitments, Warren-Green has been invited to conduct at the wedding services of TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 2005, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey in 2011 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at St. George’s Chapel in 2018. He conducted the London Chamber Orchestra on the occasion of HM The Queen’s 80th birthday and the Philharmonia Orchestra for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday concert at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, as well as HRH The Prince of Wales’ 60th birthday concert in Buckingham Palace.

HOST

Kristen Miranda, Emcee Kristen Miranda is the Managing Editor of Lifestyle Content at WBTV and co-host of QC Morning and QC@3. Kristen spent most of her career as a real news hound, and she still is. The Emmy-nominated anchor and reporter worked in several different television cities following the crime, education and consumer beats. She has anchored early mornings and late evening newscasts and has chased breaking news both in and out of the studio. Kristen always has her eye on the news of the day and tries to bring that same level of journalism to the stories shared on the QC Life shows each day. A proud graduate of the State University of New York College at Fredonia, Kristen has lived in snowy cities all across Upstate New York. Now that she has experienced the beauty, weather, and kindness of the Carolinas, it will be tough to get her to leave. Kristen is an advocate for animal adoption (she’s pretty obsessed with her rescue dog Ollie) and the Arts. She also volunteers her time with several community organizations and loves being at the starting line each year to help kick off the 24 Foundation 24 Hours of Booty to fund cancer survivorship programs in our community. 5

LIVE AUCTION Perfection in a Wine Glass! What a special experience! Six Perfect Wines, each rated 100 Points plus a 100-point Vintage Port paired with charcuterie and cheese from Porcupine Provisions. Fun and engaging wine-lover Pat Phillips will guide you through the 6 wines in your home or virtually. All you have to do is enjoy. A mutually agreeable date will be coordinated through the CSO. (An all-red tasting can be arranged if that is your preference.) The wines are: Aubert • Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard 2015 Mark Aubert continues to set an incredibly high bar for world-class quality in his remarkable Burgundianstyled Chardonnays. Giving up zingy lemon zest and grapefruit notes with layers of chalk dust, marzipan, honeyed brioche and ginger plus a touch of coriander seed, the 2015 Chardonnay UV-SL has a fullbodied powerhouse of a palate that delivers the goods and then some. Perfumed, seductive and dropdead sexy, this is a real show-stopped Chardonnay with intensity and structure to drink through 2030. Morlet Family Vineyards • Chardonnay Coup de Coeur 2015 A selection of the finest barrels of Old Wente clone wines from the Ma Douce and Ma Princesse vineyards, the 2015 Coup de Coeur struts gorgeous ripe pear and warm peach character on the nose with exotic touches of mandarin peel, fresh ginger, star anise, coriander seed and cloves, with touches of toasted cashews and honey-drizzled croissant. Medium to full-bodied, rich, intense and totally decadent, it delivers both power and finesse in equal portions, with a silken texture and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length. Mind-blowing. Domaine Grand Veneur • Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes 2010 A monumental effort, the super-rich 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a Rhone blend from 55- to 105-year-old vines and was aged for 18 months in small oak. The wine offers majestic blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and subtle Provencal herbs in the background. This utterly amazing wine comes close to being over the top, but it pulls back just in time. A massive Chateauneuf du Pape, it should age effortlessly for 25-30 years. Bravo! Tenuta San Guido • Bolgheri Sassicaia 2016 The 2016 Bolgheri Sassicaia is a wine of soaring achievement, showing pinpoint sharpness and precision. This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine’s tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors. The 2016 Sassicaia stands tall next to the epic 1985 vintage that set the ultimate benchmark for vino italiano. 2014 Realm • The Absurd 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2014 “The Absurd” is basically a choice of Realm’s finest grapes—“The crème de la crème.” A perfect wine, the 2014’s 250 cases of majestic wine have an opaque purple color, extraordinary nose of spring flowers, blueberry, blackberry, creosote, charcoal, toast and spice. The wine has unbelievable fruit on the attack, midpalate and finish, compelling purity, texture and a finish of close to a full minute. A showcase of the best of Napa Valley with the freedom of expression that results from no rules. Lokoya • Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 2016 The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with gregarious crème de cassis, wild blueberries and black raspberries with nuances of black tea, violets, aniseed, truffles and new leather plus wafts of charcuterie and chargrill. Full-bodied, very firm and very tightly wound at this youthful stage, the palate is absolutely packed with black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with epic persistence. Fonseca • Vintage Port 1977 What a Vintage Port. Dark ruby center, with a dark garnet edge. Aromas of flowers, blackberry and licorice. Subtle and complex. Wow. What a palate. Full, concentrated and rich, yet balanced and beautiful. Solid and sleepy. Still not giving all it has to give. This is just coming around. Gorgeous and classy. Love it.

Donor and host Pat Phillips will inspect wines the day of the tasting and will substitute equivalent wines in the event of any spoilage.
