Regarded as one of the top harpists of her generation. Andrea has performed with the Colorado Music Festival, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, National Repertory Orchestra, Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, Mercury Opera Company of Rochester, and the Brevard Music Center Orchestra in addition to having toured extensively throughout North and South America as Principal Harpist with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. As a competition winner, Andrea has been featured as a soloist with numerous orchestras and is in demand as a chamber musician. Andrea was a finalist for the American Harp Society National Solo Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah and is also a two-time winner of the American Harp Society (North Jersey Chapter) Solo Harp Competition. As harpist in the Eastman Opera Theatre orchestra, she recorded Bon Appetit!, a CD of vocal music from American composer, Lee Hoiby, under the Albany Records label. In Charlotte, Andrea is a highly sought after teacher. She was recently appointed to the teaching position of Lecturer of Harp at University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) as well as Adjunct Harp Instructor at Davidson College. Andrea also maintains a private teaching studio and has served as a judge for the Young Artist’s Harp Competition. MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Kurt Riecken, Principal Double Bass Kurt Riecken joined the Charlotte Symphony as Principal Bassist in January 2015, after earning his Master’s in Music Performance from Indiana University. A Florida native, Kurt began studying the bass in earnest in 9th grade. “I was a cellist but played some bass on the side” recalled Kurt. “The orchestra director found out and decided the bass section needed me more. I took it as fate and doubled down on the bass.” Kurt enjoys teaching privately as well as coaching in group and masterclass settings. Outside of music, he enjoys reading, cooking, and hiking. When asked what he loves most about being a professional musician Kurt said, “I love seeing how excited the audience is after a concert. Much of the music we play can be so impactful, but it’s easy to forget that when you’re focusing on hitting all the right notes!” For more information about Charlotte Symphony musicians, visit charlottesymphony.org.
about us
The Charlotte Symphony is committed to delivering exceptional musical experiences that connect and strengthen our community. A cornerstone of Charlotte’s arts and cultural landscape, the Charlotte Symphony is a full-time orchestra that performs more than 130 concerts annually and supports bold and robust community engagement and education efforts. Founded in 1932, and led by internationally celebrated Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, we are the most longstanding performing arts organization in the region. Today we continue as a 21st century orchestra, responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even as an agent of change. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to unite and inspire our community.
Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series, plus special events from movies in concert to the annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season.
We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community. We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills. Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19. We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access. Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to entertain, educate, unite, and inspire.

DEBUSSY born: August 22, 1862, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France died: March 25, 1918, Paris, France
Danses sacrée profane for Harp & Strings (1904) premiere: November 6, 1904 in Paris
Debussy composed his Danses sacrée et profane (Sacred and Profane Dances) in 1904, in response to a request from the Pleyel firm, who had patented a cross-strung chromatic harp (i.e., one without pedals). Pleyel wanted the new composition to be used in competitions at the Brussels Conservatory, which had begun classes in the chromatic harp. The two dances (Danse sacrée - Très modéré and Danse profane - Modéré) are both transparent and delicately-scored works for harp and string orchestra. When the Danses sacrée et profane were performed in November of 1904 at the Concerts Colonne, one writer observed that Debussy’s musical writing invoked the painting style of such artists as Eugène Carrière (1849-1906). Debussy himself remarked upon the “gravity” of the first dance and the “grace” of the second. Have questions about the harp? Your Charlotte Symphony’s Principal Harpist Andrea Mumm Trammell has answers! Check out her Q&A video below.
Production of the Pleyel cross-strung chromatic harp was halted in 1930, but a number of fine instruments from its short period of popularity have been preserved.

notes RICHARD
STRAUSS born: June 11, 1864, Munich, Germany died: September 8, 1949, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
Metamorphosen, A Study for 23 Solo Strings (1945) premiere: January 25, 1946 in Zürich
The final decade of Richard Strauss’s long and productive life was, in many ways, the most difficult. Along with the challenges of advancing age, Strauss witnessed the destruction of his native Germany as World War II reached its devastating conclusion. Ultimately, Strauss and his wife, Pauline, left their home in Garmisch, seeking refuge in Switzerland. Nevertheless, Strauss’s last decade proved to be a remarkably creative period, often referred to as the composer’s “Indian Summer.” Works from this period include Capriccio (1942), the Second Horn Concerto (1942), the Oboe Concerto (1945) and the Four Last Songs (1948). The premiere of Strauss’s Metamorphosen (subtitled “A Study for 23 Solo Strings”) took place in January 1946, conducted by Paul Sacher, who commissioned the work for his Collegium Musicum Zürich. Strauss attended the dress rehearsal, and asked Sacher if he could conduct. By all accounts, the composer gave a magnificent reading of the score many view as his most personal and heartfelt work. Strauss thanked all of the players and quietly left the theater. He did not return for the premiere. Metamorphosen opens with a brooding theme in the cellos and doublebasses (Adagio ma non troppo). The violas then play a descending, dottedrhythm theme, marked piano and espressivo. Additional themes follow, suggesting memories of other works, both by Strauss and his predecessors. The central section presents various permutations of the thematic material, with rich, contrapuntal writing for the various strings. The music propels to a stirring climax, immediately followed by the ensemble’s fortissimo reprise of the opening (Adagio, tempo primo). The energy of the central portion subsides, leading to a despairing, pianissimo resolution. Its kinship with the music of another great German composer becomes clear in Metamorphosen’s concluding moments: the basses play the opening measures of the Funeral March from the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, the “Eroica” (1804). Under the Beethoven quotation, Strauss wrote the words, “IN MEMORIAM!”
