MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Terry Maskin, Oboe/English Horn Terry Maskin has been playing English horn for the Charlotte Symphony since 1986. A graduate of Harvard, Terry studied economics and served as captain of the table tennis team. He’s also a member of Mensa International and was one of the winners in the 2007 Charlotte Observer Sonnet Contest. Terry has performed with the Richmond Symphony, the Tulsa Philharmonic, the Grand Teton Music Festival and Eastern Music Festival, as well as with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, Terry has performed on both oboe and English horn, including a performance of Persichetti’s English Horn Concerto on the CSO’s Classical series. When asked what he loves most about being a professional musician Terry said, “Composers have written impossibly gorgeous, passionate, poignant, dramatic solos for my instrument. I have had the remarkable opportunity to be immersed in these magical passages and to convey that magic to our audience.” For more information about Charlotte Symphony musicians, visit charlottesymphony.org.
about us
The Charlotte Symphony is committed to delivering exceptional musical experiences that connect and strengthen our community. A cornerstone of Charlotte’s arts and cultural landscape, the Charlotte Symphony is a full-time orchestra that performs more than 130 concerts annually and supports bold and robust community engagement and education efforts. Founded in 1932, and led by internationally celebrated Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, we are the most longstanding performing arts organization in the region. Today we continue as a 21st century orchestra, responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even as an agent of change. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to unite and inspire our community.
Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series, plus special events from movies in concert to the annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season.
We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community. We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills. Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19. We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access. Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to entertain, educate, unite, and inspire.

concert notes GEORGE FRIDERIC
HANDEL
born: February 23, 1685, Halle, Germany died: April 14, 1759, London, United Kingdom
Entrance of the Queen of Sheba from Solomon, hwv 67 (1748) premiere: March 17, 1749 in London
German-born Baroque composer George Frideric Handel is most well-known for his operas and oratorios. He started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera, but in 1737 he had a physical breakdown, changed direction creatively, and began transitioning to English choral works. After his success with Messiah he never composed an Italian opera again. Strongly influenced by the techniques of the great composers of the Italian Baroque and the English composer Henry Purcell, Handel’s music influenced many significant composers who came after him, including Haydn and Mozart. To Beethoven he was, “the master of us all...the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel before his tomb.” Solomon, one of Handel’s finest oratorios, premiered at London’s Covent Garden Theatre on March 17, 1749. Solomon, depicting episodes in the life of the biblical king, is in three acts. The first is set around the consecration of the Temple in Jerusalem. The second depicts the famous episode in which two women claim a child as their own, with Solomon displaying the wisdom that solves the mystery. The final act concerns a visit to Solomon’s kingdom by the Queen of Sheba. The act begins with a sprightly orchestral piece, “Entrance of the Queen of Sheba.”
The “Entrance of the Queen of Sheba” has become a fixture of the orchestral concert hall, and popular culture as well. The work was featured in the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The Queen of Sheba before King Solomon by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, a contemporary of Handel’s (Palazzo Ducale, Venice).

concert notes WOLFGANG AMADEUS
MOZART
born: January 27, 1756, Salzburg, Austria died: December 5, 1791, Vienna, Austria
Symphony No. 40 in G minor K. 550 (1788) premiere: unknown
Mozart completed his final three Symphonies — No. 39 in E-flat Major, No. 40 in G minor, and No. 41 in C Major (“Jupiter”) — over the remarkably brief span between June 26 and August 10, 1788. Even more remarkable is the fact that these glorious Symphonies, among Mozart’s crowning achievements, were the product of a particularly distressing period in the composer’s life. Mozart’s career in Vienna as a composer, teacher, virtuoso pianist, and impresario reached its apex in the mid-1780s. However, the exhilaration of those triumphant years soon yielded to profound frustration and unhappiness. Mozart experienced a sharp decline in the demands for his services in Vienna. In time, Mozart was reduced to begging for money from acquaintances — principally, Michael Puchberg, a fellow Mason and ardent music lover. Several of Mozart’s letters to Puchberg have survived, and they are indeed heartbreaking to read. A letter from Mozart to Michael Puchberg (July 1788): “Amid my toils and anxieties I have brought my affairs to such a pass that I must needs raise a little money on these 2 pawnbroker’s tickets. I implore you by our friendship to do me this favor, but it must be done instantly.”
The mystery of Mozart’s final three Symphonies Mozart completed his G-minor Symphony, K. 550, on July 25. There exists no specific documentation that the G-minor — or, for that matter, any of the final three Symphonies — was performed during Mozart’s lifetime. This fact has led some to theorize that Mozart composed these Symphonies not for monetary gain, but out of an overwhelming need to express himself in music. In this context, the G-minor becomes a manifestation of the despair Mozart experienced during this difficult period in his life. Such a theory, of course, fails to explain what autobiographical elements are expressed in the high spirits of the E-flat Symphony, or in the heroic grandeur of the “Jupiter.”

concert notes Further, Mozart almost always composed large-scale works for specific, upcoming concerts. Correspondence from Mozart refers to subscription concerts scheduled for the summer of 1788, though it is not certain whether those took place. There is documentation of concerts conducted by Mozart in Germany in 1789 and 1790. The concert programs included symphonies by Mozart, and it is reasonable to assume that they would have included his most recent efforts; i.e. one or more of the final trilogy. A further clue is found in the fact that Mozart’s autograph of the score for the G-minor Symphony contains modifications of the original version’s Andante, as well as a revised version of the entire work, adding clarinets to the orchestration. Such modifications would not have been made without the existence of previous performances and the promise of new ones.
“Plunges into the abyss of the soul” Of much greater importance, of course, is the music itself. As with any masterpiece of such depth and profundity, Mozart’s G-minor Symphony has inspired glowing, but quite varied, responses. Robert Schumann praised the work’s “impassive beauty” while pianist and historian Charles Rosen found “passion, violence, and grief.” Mozart biographer, Alfred Einstein, termed the work a “fatalistic piece of chamber music,” in which he encountered “plunges into the abyss of the soul, symbolized in modulations so bold to Mozart’s contemporaries they must have seemed to lose their way entirely, and so distant that only Mozart himself could find the path back from them into the light of day.” The G-minor Symphony is in four movements. The first (Molto allegro) is highly dramatic, featuring a terse development section that anticipates the music of Beethoven in its dramatic manipulation of the briefest rhythmic motifs. The slow-tempo movement (Andante) provides some lyrical relief from its predecessor, but there are also episodes that reinforce the turmoil and foreboding found throughout much of the Symphony. The third-movement (Menuetto. Allegretto) is far more aggressive than the typical courtly dance, although the central Trio radiates elegance and repose. The finale (Allegro assai) is a stormy affair, propelling relentlessly to the Symphony’s curt final bars.
