MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Hunter Gordon, Bassoon Originally from Port Angeles, WA, Hunter Gordon was named Acting Principal Bassoon of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for the 2020-21 season. Previously, Hunter held positions with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He holds a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Kamins, and both a Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Oberlin College and Conservatory. When asked how he chose the bassoon, Hunter said, “When I was in 6th grade, my band director lured me into playing bassoon by promoting the fact that no one played it in the entire school, meaning I wouldn’t have to pay a rental fee. Even 11-year-old me knew that was a bargain I couldn’t pass up. Turns out, I loved it!” For more information about Charlotte Symphony musicians, visit charlottesymphony.org.

about us

The Charlotte Symphony is committed to delivering exceptional musical experiences that connect and strengthen our community. A cornerstone of Charlotte’s arts and cultural landscape, the Charlotte Symphony is a full-time orchestra that performs more than 130 concerts annually and supports bold and robust community engagement and education efforts. Founded in 1932, and led by internationally celebrated Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, we are the most longstanding performing arts organization in the region. Today we continue as a 21st century orchestra, responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even as an agent of change. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to unite and inspire our community.

Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series, plus special events from movies in concert to the annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season.

We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community. We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills. Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19. We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access. Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to entertain, educate, unite, and inspire.

concert notes WOLFGANG AMADEUS

MOZART

born: January 27, 1756, Salzburg, Austria died: December 5, 1791, Vienna, Austria

Divertimento for Strings in F major K. 138 (1772) premiere: unknown

The Divertimento for Strings in F, K. 138, is one in a series of three such works (along with the Divertimentos in D, K. 136, and B-flat, K. 137) the 16-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed in Salzburg in the spring of 1772. That fact is virtually all that is certain about these engaging compositions. The title “Divertimento,” which usually refers to music written as entertainment for parties, was applied to the compositions not by Wolfgang Mozart, but by his father, Leopold. Some scholars have suggested that the composer envisioned these Divertimentos as concert pieces, rather than background music. Further, it is not clear from the autograph score whether Mozart intended the works to be performed by a string quartet, string orchestra, or, perhaps, either type of ensemble, depending upon musician availability. Mozart biographer Alfred Einstein posits that Mozart may even have planned to transform these works (via the addition of appropriate wind instruments) into symphonies for use during his upcoming visit to Italy.

One of Mozart’s most Whether the works in question are classified as famous and beloved Divertimentos, String Quartets or Symphonies works falls within the matters little in the enjoyment of their considerable category of occasional music. Mozart composed charms. Mozart never viewed his “occasional” his serenade, Eine kleine music as being of lesser quality or importance. Nachtmusik, K. 525, in The Divertimentos, K. 136-8, are accomplished, 1787, while at work on his engaging works that offer tantalizing glimpses of opera Don Giovanni. the mature genius soon to blossom. They also retain the distinction of being the earliest concerted instrumental pieces by Mozart to maintain a regular presence in the performance repertoire.

The Divertimento, K. 138, is in three movements. The quick-tempo first movement opens with Mozart’s characteristic, arresting juxtaposition of forte and piano dynamics. Also characteristic is its wealth of thematic material. The second movement Andante features a restrained lyricism, often tinged with pathos. The first violins immediately present the vigorous principal theme of the Divertimento’s rondo finale (Presto). High spirits prevail throughout, right to the descending conclusion.

concert notes FRANZ JOSEPH

HAYDN

born: March 31, 1732, Rohrau, Austria died: May 31, 1809, Vienna, Austria

Symphony No. 64 in A major “Tempora mutantur” - Hob. I:64 (1773-5) premiere: unknown

From 1766 until 1790, Franz Joseph Haydn served as Kappellmeister to the court of the ruling Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. Contemporary biographer, G. A. Griesinger, described Haydn’s responsibilities: Griesinger described Haydn had his hands full: he composed, he had Prince Nikolaus as: “an to conduct all the music, help with the rehearsals, educated connoisseur give lessons and even tune his own keyboard and a passionate instrument in the orchestra. He often wondered lover of music, and how it had been possible for him to compose as also a good violin much music as he did when he was forced to lose player. He had his own so many hours in purely mechanical tasks. opera, spoken theatre, marionette theatre, church music, and chamber music.”

The years 1766-73 were among the most prolific and creative of Haydn’s Esterházy tenure and are often referred to as his Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) period — a reference to the relatively contemporaneous German literary movement of the same name. During this period, Haydn composed several symphonies that feature such components as minor keys; pervasive and restless energy; stunning dynamic contrasts; and frequent, dramatic pauses. No doubt, Haydn’s revolutionary Sturm und Drang symphonies surprised and, at times, even shocked contemporary audiences. Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 dates from the closing years of the composer’s Sturm und Drang period. Haydn included the Latin phrase “Tempora mutantur” in the score, a reference to the saying: Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis (Times change, and we change with them) The Symphony is in four movements. The opening begins with a juxtaposition of hushed and forceful dynamics, and a restless energy, all characteristic of the opening movement as a whole. The first portion of the slow-tempo second movement is scored for the strings, including muted violins. Indeed, the winds do not enter until halfway through the movement. The phrasing, notable for frequent pauses, has a labored quality that suggests Haydn’s “Tempora mutantur” invocation. The third movement is a minuet, an elegant dance in triple meter. The finale brings the Symphony to a rousing close. 11
