welcome
We’re so proud to be closing out this season’s Classical series by welcoming two outstanding violinists to our stage: Nathan Meltzer performing Beethoven’s Romances with the CSO under the baton of Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, and Simone Porter in Mozart’s Straßburg Concerto with Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees. While this season comes to a strong close, we look with anticipation towards our recently announced 2021-22 season. There’s much to celebrate as we enter the Symphony’s 90th anniversary year. We’ll fête Christopher Warren-Green and honor his great accomplishments over the past 12 years as our Music Director and revel in the feeling of community that comes from experiencing live music together. Thank you for supporting the CSO through the past year, and I hope to see you again at Truist Field on June 25, when we’ll Celebrate America and pay tribute to frontline and essential workers.

about us
The Charlotte Symphony is committed to delivering exceptional musical experiences that connect and strengthen our community. A cornerstone of Charlotte’s arts and cultural landscape, the Charlotte Symphony is a full-time orchestra that performs more than 130 concerts annually and supports bold and robust community engagement and education efforts. Founded in 1932, and led by internationally celebrated Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, we are the most longstanding performing arts organization in the region. Today we continue as a 21st century orchestra, responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even as an agent of change. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to unite and inspire our community.
Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series, plus special events from movies in concert to the annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season.
We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community. We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills. Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19. We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access. Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to entertain, educate, unite, and inspire.

BEETHOVEN born: December 1770, Bonn, Germany died: March 26, 1827, Vienna, Austria
Romance No. 1 in G major Op. 40 (1802) Romance No. 2 in F major Op. 50 (1798) premiere: unknown
Little is known about the circumstances surrounding Beethoven’s creation of his two Romances for Violin and Orchestra. It appears that Beethoven composed the Romances around the turn of the century. He may have considered one or both of the works as potential slow-tempo movements for an early, unfinished Violin Concerto (WoO 5 [ca. 1790-2]). The Romances are both in rondo form and feature identical instrumentation (solo violin, flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, and strings). Their enigmatic history aside, the elegance and affecting lyrical writing for the soloist have made Beethoven’s Romances for Violin and Orchestra perennial favorites among distinguished soloists. As an instrumentalist, Beethoven is best known as a virtuoso keyboard performer — but he also studied the violin and viola. As a young man, Beethoven was a violist in the Court Orchestra in his native city of Bonn.

SCHUBERT born: January 31, 1797, Vienna, Austria died: November 19, 1828, Vienna, Austria
Symphony No. 5 in B♭ major D. 485 (1816) premiere: October 17, 1841 in Vienna
While many scholars have remarked upon Beethoven’s possible influence on Franz Schubert’s Fourth Symphony in C minor (the “Tragic,” completed in April of 1816), it is clear that the young composer soon looked elsewhere for his musical inspiration. In June of 1816, after a In the final weeks of performance of one of Mozart’s String Quintets, Beethoven’s life, a Schubert wrote in his diary: friend shared many A light, bright, fine day this will remain throughout my whole life. As from afar the magic notes of Mozart’s music still gently haunt me...O Mozart, immortal Mozart, how many, oh how endlessly many such comforting perceptions of a brighter and better life hast thou brought to our souls!
of Schubert’s songs with the composer. Beethoven exclaimed: “Truly there is a divine spark in Schubert!” adding, “he will cause a stir in the world.”
Schubert was not yet twenty when he wrote these words. In time, he would return to a reverence for Beethoven’s unique greatness. Still, it was in the frame of mind expressed in the diary that Schubert composed his Symphony No. 5, sometimes called “the Symphony without trumpets and drums.” There is a definite Mozartean influence in the Schubert Fifth: for example, the orchestration (omitting trumpets, drums, and clarinets) matches the original scoring of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor. But as with the expression of any genius, young or old, the voice of the Fifth Symphony is Schubert’s alone. The Fifth Symphony is in the traditional four movements. The first (Allegro), is in sonata form, featuring two principal melodies, both charming and lyrical. The elegant slow-tempo second movement (Andante con moto) is based upon two alternating episodes. The brief coda combines the episodes, prior to the movement’s ethereal close. The third-movement Minuet (Menuetto. Allegro molto) introduces a rather angular ascending and descending melody, juxtaposing minor and major. The charming central Trio is in the spirit of a leisurely country dance. The finale (Allegro vivace), like the opening movement, is in sonata form, and based upon a pair of themes. The music dashes to a sprightly conclusion.
