welcome

We’re so proud to be closing out this season’s Classical series by welcoming two outstanding violinists to our stage: Nathan Meltzer performing Beethoven’s Romances with the CSO under the baton of Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, and Simone Porter in Mozart’s Straßburg Concerto with Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees. While this season comes to a strong close, we look with anticipation towards our recently announced 2021-22 season. There’s much to celebrate as we enter the Symphony’s 90th anniversary year. We’ll fête Christopher Warren-Green and honor his great accomplishments over the past 12 years as our Music Director and revel in the feeling of community that comes from experiencing live music together. Thank you for supporting the CSO through the past year, and I hope to see you again at Truist Field on June 25, when we’ll Celebrate America and pay tribute to frontline and essential workers.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Amy Orsinger Whitehead, flute Pennsylvania native Amy Orsinger Whitehead has played flute in the Charlotte Symphony since 1997. An avid chamber musician, she also performs in the Rhodora Winds, the Laurel Trio, and Flute4. Amy holds a flute performance degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and a chamber music performance degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Institute of Chamber Music. Amy’s passion for music education and community engagement has led her to perform in schools, retirement and nursing homes, libraries, hospitals, community and senior centers, residential facilities, and even city sidewalks. Among the most meaningful projects for Amy is the CSO’s Healing Hands program, which takes Symphony musicians out into the community to perform for patients, residents and community members at a variety of locations. When not playing flute, Amy enjoys Zumba, strength training, and shopping. For more information about Charlotte Symphony musicians, visit charlottesymphony.org.

We are responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even are a change agent. Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series performances, plus special events ranging from movies-in-concert to our annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Longstanding Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season. We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community.

our music director Now in his eleventh season with the Charlotte Symphony, Music Director Christopher Warren-Green also serves as Music Director of the London Chamber Orchestra. Key engagements have included The Philadelphia Orchestra; the Detroit, Houston, St. Louis, Toronto, Seattle, and Vancouver symphony orchestras; the Minnesota Orchestra; Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra; the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic; and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others. Warren-Green returns to Charlotte to open this season with virtual concerts featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Brahms, and Dvořák. A product of community music education, Warren-Green plays a key role in the CSO’s educational efforts, including two youth orchestras and Project Harmony, an afterschool program serving high-need areas. In addition to his international commitments, Warren-Green was invited to conduct at the wedding services of TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2011 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at St George’s Chapel in 2018. concert notes WOLFGANG AMADEUS

MOZART

born: January 27, 1756, Salzburg, Austria died: December 5, 1791, Vienna, Austria

Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major "Straßburg," K. 216 (1775) premiere: unknown

Although Mozart, the instrumentalist, is best known as a keyboard virtuoso, he was also a highly accomplished violinist. In 1772, the Archbishop of Salzburg appointed the 16-year-old Mozart as conductor and concertmaster of the Salzburg Court Orchestra. In 1777-78, Mozart traveled throughout Europe, astonishing listeners with his command of both the piano and violin. It is not entirely certain whether Mozart initially composed his Violin Concerto specifically for his own use, or for the Italian violinist Antonio Brunetti — himself a leader of the Salzburg Court Orchestra. Mozart did, of course, perform these Concertos for the public, and certainly intended them to display the technical fluency that was a hallmark of his playing. In a 1777 letter, Mozart informed his father Leopold, “in the evening at supper I played my Straßburg Concerto, which went like oil. Everyone praised my beautiful pure tone.” Here, Mozart refers to his Violin Concerto No. 3, which includes a popular melody in the finale known as “The Straßburger.” The graceful opening movement (Allegro) begins with the traditional exposition of the principal themes by the orchestra and soloist. The predominantly minorkey development ends with a recitative-like passage, one of several operatic elements that appear throughout Mozart’s violin concertos. The recapitulation leads to a cadenza for the soloist, followed by a brief, sprightly coda. In the slow-tempo movement (Adagio), the oboes are silent, replaced by the flutes. The solo violin assumes the role of the soprano voice so beloved by Mozart. The Rondo finale is a marvelous example of Mozart employing established musical forms to highly creative effect. The movement begins in typical rondo fashion with the introduction of a tripping, principal theme. The contrasting sections, however, offer more pathos than usual. In a particularly inventive sequence, a brief pause is followed by a transition from the opening 3/8 and quick tempo, to an Andante in duple meter. The soloist, over pizzicato accompaniment, offers a melancholy tune. Suddenly the tempo and mood are transformed once again, with an Allegretto passage featuring a rustic folk-melody. After a reprise of the principal theme, the finale proceeds to a restrained conclusion. 10

concert notes OTTORINO

RESPIGHI born: July 9, 1879, Bologna, Italy died: April 18, 1936, Rome, Italy

Antiche danze ed arie (Ancient Airs and Dances) Suite No. 3, P 172 (1931) premiere: unknown

The Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is best known for his “Roman Trilogy.” The three orchestral tone poems — Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928) all boast huge symphonic forces, masterfully employed to depict the sights and life of the historic Italian city. After Respighi completed his “Roman Trilogy,” he told his wife: “Now I am much more interested in small orchestras and chamber ensembles.” And indeed, in 1927, the year before Roman Festivals, Respighi demonstrated his magic with reduced orchestral forces in his Trittico botticelliano (Three Botticelli Pictures), inspired by paintings by the great Italian Renaissance artist, Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510). In 1931, Respighi composed yet another masterpiece for small orchestra based upon 16th-century artistic expression, his Third Suite of Ancient Airs and Dances. (The first two Suites were written in 1917 and 1923, respectively). Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances are beautiful orchestral arrangements of Italian and French lute music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Respighi found most of his material from lute pieces transcribed for the guitar and published by the Italian musicologist, Oscar Chilesotti (1848-1916). Suite No. 3 of the Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for string orchestra, is in four movements. The first, Italiana (Andantino), by an anonymous composer, ca. 1600, is a lovely song in ¾ time. The second movement is based upon the French 16th century composer Jean-Baptiste Besard’s Arie di corte (Airs of the Court) and comprises seven sections (Andante cantabile, Allegretto, Vivace, Lento con grande espressione, Allegro vivace, Vivacissimo, Andante cantabile). The third movement is a Siciliana (Andantino), a slow-tempo song of Sicilian origin, in this case authored by an anonymous 16th century composer. The finale is a Passacaglia (Maestoso—Vivace), a series of variations over a repeated figure, originally composed by Lodovico Roncalli in 1692.
