As the warmth of spring returns to Charlotte, I am reminded of the natural beauty and renewal this season brings. Just as flowers bloom in a symphony of colors, our Charlotte Symphony is experiencing a similar surge of vitality this month as many of our most exciting initiatives come to fruition.

April kicks off with a special joint performance with Johnson C. Smith University, a continuation of our valued partnership. Together we’ll present a musical tribute to resilience and empowerment, featuring Carlos Simon’s Portrait of a Queen , narrated by Dr. Shawn-Allyce White.

In the same week, we welcome back our Music Director Designate, Kwamé Ryan, who will lead the Orchestra in an inspiring program of works by Wang Jie, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. I hope you’ll join us for Maestro Ryan’s inaugural season as Music Director. You can explore details of the recently announced 2024–25 season on page 14 or at charlottesymphony.org

It also brings me great joy to welcome back Conductor Laureate Christopher Warren-Green as he leads the Orchestra and Charlotte Master Chorale in a program inspired by the sea.

And to close the month, we’re excited to launch CSO Roadshow — the Charlotte Symphony’s new mobile stage! In its first appearance on April 28, CSO musicians will perform alongside UltimaNota for the Latin American Coalition’s Música con amigos festival.

ANNOUNCING THE CHARLOTTE SYMPHONY’S NEXT MUSIC DIRECTOR

We are thrilled to announce that Kwamé Ryan, hailed as a “dynamic conductor” by The Baltimore Sun, will assume the role of your Charlotte Symphony’s 12th Music Director, beginning in 2024–25, ushering in a new era for the Orchestra’s 93rd season.

“On my very first visit to Charlotte, I felt instantly connected with the dynamic energy of the city and then profoundly inspired by the wonderful musicians of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra … I very much look forward to discovering how this exciting new partnership can enrich the orchestra’s legacy and the cultural fabric of Charlotte.”

Born in Canada and raised on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, Kwamé Ryan discovered his passion for conducting at the age of nine. He studied Musicology at Cambridge University and trained in conducting under the guidance of renowned composer/conductor Peter Eötvös. An active guest conductor, Ryan has led orchestras across the United States, UK, and Germany. In the fall of 2023, Ryan conducted the world premiere of Jake Heggie’s Intelligence at Houston Grand Opera, and in 2024, he makes his debut with Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the New York Philharmonic.

When not on the podium, Ryan dedicates his time to educational and community engagement initiatives. He has previously served as Musical Director of the National Youth Orchestra of France and as Director of the Academy for the Performing Arts at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, Ryan is the host of “8 Minute Idea,” a podcast in which he offers insights, tools, and life hacks.

Ryan’s selection was unanimous by the Music Director Search Committee, comprised of Charlotte Symphony musicians, staff, and members of the Board of Directors.

Your Charlotte Symphony Experience

Whether you’re attending your first Symphony performance, or you’re a longtime subscriber, we’d like to extend to you a warm and inclusive welcome! Below is some helpful information to ensure you make the most of your Charlotte Symphony experience.

What should I wear?

The Charlotte Symphony has no specific dress code. We encourage you to be comfortable and come as yourself in a style of your choice.

When do I applaud?

Audiences applaud to welcome the concertmaster, conductor, and featured artists onstage. Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief silent pause. It is tradition to hold applause until the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, do not be afraid to applaud!

Can I take photos?

Certainly! We welcome and encourage you to capture and share photos before and after the concert, as well as during intermission. Feel free to use your cell phone for photography without flash during the performance, but please refrain from video or audio recording.

Christopher James Lees resident conductor

Emerging American conductor Christopher James Lees brings passionate and nuanced orchestral performances to the stage, a fierce commitment to contemporary music, and a natural charisma to audiences all around the world.

In 2018, Mr. Lees began an appointment as Resident Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra. In addition to the more than 50 annual concert appearances with the CSO, he has annually stepped in to conduct Subscription Classical performances on five occasions, including two gala concerts with legendary artists and Grammy Award winners Branford Marsalis and Rhiannon Giddens, respectively.

An active guest conductor, Mr. Lees has returned for performances with the Los Angeles and Rochester Philharmonics, the Houston, Detroit, Milwaukee, North Carolina, Portland, and Flint Symphonies, and conducted debuts with the New York Philharmonic, and New World, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Toledo, and Vermont Symphonies.

Additional engagements have taken him to the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Orchestra de Chambre de Paris, Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and at the Music in the Mountains Festival & Festival Internacional de Inverno de Campos do Jordão in Brazil.

Only the second American Gustavo Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mr. Lees made his debut with the orchestra in April 2013 and returned for concerts in February 2015.

With the New York Philharmonic, St. Louis & Atlanta Symphonies, among others, Mr. Lees has served as an assistant conductor for the world’s leading conductors, including: Gustavo Dudamel, Paavo Järvi, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Robert Spano, Marin Alsop, Pablo Heras-Casado, Stéphane Denève, Susanna Mälkki, and Nicholas McGegan.

After two summers of study with Robert Spano at the Aspen Music Festival, Mr. Lees was named winner of both the 2011 James Conlon Conducting Prize and the 2012 Aspen Conducting Prizes, respectively. In 2013, Mr. Lees returned for a third summer as assistant conductor for the Aspen Music Festival and School.

An active pianist, and equally comfortable in the opera pit, Mr. Lees has served as Music Director or Assistant Conductor for a wide array of operas: Aida (Atlanta Symphony), Peter Grimes & John Harbison's The Great Gatsby (Aspen Opera Theatre Center), Louis Andriessen's De Materie and Philip Glass' the CIVIL warS (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Don Giovanni & Mark Adamo's Little Women (University of Michigan Opera Theatre), and Nino Rota’s Il Capello di paglia di Firenze (AJ Fletcher Opera Institute).

A recipient of a Career Assistance Grant from the Solti Foundation US, Mr. Lees was also chosen for showcase on the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation National Conductor Preview, hosted by the League of American Orchestras and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

A dedicated advocate for music of our time, Mr. Lees has premiered more than one hundred fifty new works by a diverse range of composers, and collaborated closely with Pulitzer Prize winners John Adams, William Bolcom, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Joseph Schwantner, Steven Stucky, Caroline Shaw, Roger Reynolds, and Julia Wolfe.

An equally passionate advocate for music education, Mr. Lees has brought inspirational energy to student orchestras across the country, from the Colburn School to the Shepherd School at Rice University and the New England Conservatory.

A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Lees holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan, and has studied conducting with Larry Rachleff and Robert Spano, as well as having participated in masterclasses with Lorin Maazel, Michael Tilson Thomas, Gustav Meier, and Jorma Panula.

When not performing, Mr. Lees can be found riding roller coasters with his eight-year old son, reading the stack of books by his nightstand, or training for the Boston Marathon in April 2024.

Wesley Connor trombone

Wesley Connor is a senior at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina. He studies under Thomas Burge and has studied with Jeremy Marks and Nicholas Carl in the past.

He was the winner of the Symphony Guild Young Artists Competition (2023), Youth Orchestra of Charlotte Concerto Competiton (2023), and Blumey Young Artists Competition (2022). He was also selected to compete in the finals for the American Trombone Workshop’s Tenor Trombone Competition and Navy Band Concerto Competition. Wesley has performed with the Honor Band of America, the NAfME All-National Symphony Orchestra, and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. Wesley formed the Hickory Ridge Trombone Choir known as “Bad to the Bone,” which has gone on to perform a recital at the NC Trombone Festival and won third place for the American Prize in Chamber Music Performance.

As for his future, Wesley’s love for music steers him in the direction of obtaining a degree in Trombone Performance. He would like to thank Chris White, Thomas Burge, David Rivero, Nicholas Carl, and Jeremy Marks for all they have done for his music career. Lastly, more than anyone, he would like to thank his family and girlfriend as they’ve been his greatest supporters and he couldn’t imagine doing it without them.

We're rolling out something big! This spring, your Charlotte Symphony takes the music on the road for CSO Roadshow, a traveling concert series that will bring pop-up music experiences to neighborhoods across Charlotte.

Our mobile stage will bring the power of live music to the heart of local communities as our 40-foot trailer takes Charlotte Symphony musicians to streets, parks, and plazas in free "walk up" concerts for all to enjoy. Keep an eye out for upcoming CSO Roadshow concerts near you!
