Welcome!
The sights and sounds of the holidays in Charlotte are all around us – the twinkling lights of decorated homes, festive popup markets in Uptown, and, of course, the music of your Charlotte Symphony! We’re so pleased to offer a variety of ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones this month. First, what would the holidays be without the great tradition of Handel’s Messiah and the Charlotte Master Chorale? Ian Watson, Principal Keyboardist and Associate Conductor of the Handel & Haydn Society, brings fresh insight to the beloved work, conducting from the harpsichord. Gather the whole family for our joyful Magic of Christmas and enjoy singalongs, falling snow, and your favorite seasonal classics, with star entertainer Tony DeSare and Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees (and who knows, maybe a surprise guest along the way)! Neither will you want to miss the unveiling of Thorgy Thor’s fun and inventive holiday show, nor the awe-inspiring acrobatics of Cirque de Noël!
We also warmly encourage you to support Charlotte Ballet’s holiday tradition of presenting the Nutcracker, with the musicians of the Charlotte Symphony back in the pit to bring Tchaikovsky’s timeless score to life! I hope you’ll join us to ring in the New Year with American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle and a post-concert party with champagne and salsa dancing. If you’re still working on your holiday shopping, we’ve just opened up a new shop with items sure to delight the music lovers in your life. You can find a curated list on page 14 of this program. Thank you for making the CSO part of your family tradition this year. We wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season.

A SALUTE TO
THE MAESTRO 12 Brilliant Seasons with Christopher Warren-Green
2021-22 marks Christopher WarrenGreen’s valedictory lap as Music Director after twelve seasons at the helm of the Charlotte Symphony — a tenure that has been marked by a broadening of repertoire and innovative programming, attracting some of the world’s foremost soloists to the Charlotte stage. Throughout the season, we’ll honor the Maestro’s legacy of musical excellence in Charlotte before he takes on the titles of Music Adviser and Conductor Laureate, a title bestowed upon former Music Directors who have made a significant impact and have formed and shaped the institution’s artistic quality over time. We hope you’ll join us throughout Maestro Warren-Green’s farewell season, where he’ll lead some of his favorite works — including Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, and Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Maestro will close out his tenure as Music Director by leading the CSO and the Charlotte Master Chorale in Beethoven’s epic Ninth Symphony. Help us honor Maestro Warren-Green in his final season as Music Director by sharing your favorite memories on social media with the hashtag #cltsymphony. And see what CSO musicians and supporters have to say about the Maestro in this charming farewell video: Celebrating Christopher Warren-Green 4 salute to the maestro

sing-along SING THE CAROLS OF CHRISTMAS AUDIENCE SING-ALONG O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem Come and behold Him, born the King of Angels O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
What Child Is This? What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the Babe, the son of Mary.
O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light, The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight
Silent Night Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright ‘Round yon virgin mother and child, Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, heav’nly hosts sing “Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born!”
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King! Peace on Earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies With th’ angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem” Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!
Joy to the World Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let Earth receive her King, Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, and heav’n and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ, While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy!
