Queen Bey meets the Classical King
NOVEMBER 15 & 16
NOVEMBER 15 & 16
The Charlotte Symphony has truly entered a transformative new era as we officially welcome Kwamé Ryan as our Music Director this month! In his inaugural performances, Maestro Ryan leads the Orchestra in Pēteris Vasks’ Musica Dolorosa and Brahms’ A German Requiem , with the Charlotte Master Chorale, ushering in a fresh, bold vision for our future.
This season has already been emblematic of that new vision. We’ve brought incredible, diverse talent to our stages, including the renowned Sphinx Virtuosi at our Annual Gala, and we’re reaching new audiences across Charlotte with our mobile stage, the CSO Roadshow, and our immersive programming. We’re forging new partnerships, such as our performance in the Festival of India which opened the season, broadening our reach and bringing live music to communities across the city.
And here in November alone, you’ll find the Symphony performing across genres, complementing our core repertoire — from Beethoven X Beyoncé to a lively evening at NoDa Brewing Co, to a whimsical murder mystery family concert, and a program showcasing the incredible young musicians of our youth orchestras. It’s a dynamic time for the Charlotte Symphony, and we’re thrilled to have you with us to experience it all.
Thank you for joining us. Enjoy the concert!
David Fisk President & CEO
Whether you’re attending your first Symphony performance, or you’re a longtime subscriber, we’d like to extend to you a warm and inclusive welcome! Below is some helpful information to ensure you make the most of your Charlotte Symphony experience.
The Charlotte Symphony has no specific dress code. We encourage you to be comfortable and come as yourself in a style of your choice.
Audiences applaud to welcome the concertmaster, conductor, and featured artists onstage. Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief silent pause. It is tradition to hold applause until the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, do not be afraid to applaud!
Certainly! We welcome and encourage you to capture and share photos before and after the concert, as well as during intermission. Feel free to use your cell phone for photography without flash during the performance, but please refrain from video or audio recording.

conductor & creator
A multi-hyphenate music powerhouse and creative visionary, Steve Hackman is a daring voice intent on redefining art music in the 21st century, “with an innovative brilliance and style reminiscent of the late, great maestro Leonard Bernstein” (Tom Alvarez, On the Aisle). Trained at the elite level classically but equally adept in popular styles, his breadth of musical fluency and technique is uncanny — he is at once a composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, and pianist. He uses these polymathic abilities to create original music of incisive modernism yet rooted in elevated classicism.
Hackman’s groundbreaking orchestral fusions known as SYMPHONYFUSE, such as Brahms X Radiohead and The Resurrection Mixtape (Mahler X Notorious BIG X Tupac Shakur), are introducing the symphony orchestra to its future audience; he has conducted these pieces to sellout houses across the country with the orchestras of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Colorado, Phoenix, Nashville, Oregon, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Columbus, Charlotte, Southwest Florida, Alabama, Colorado Music Festival, and the Boston Pops.
2024 has already seen the premiere of Hackman’s newest SYMPHONYFUSE production, Beethoven X Beyoncé. He is currently collaborating with Jacob Jonas and Moses Sumney on a full-length ballet, and at the same time scoring his first feature film. He was a part of the writing team for the 2024 Academy Awards, and collaborated with Charlie Puth, The War and Treaty, and Rickey Minor in arranging the In Memoriam segment for the 2024 Emmy Awards.
In 2023 Hackman launched his original music project THE BRINK, a four-part, 300-minute work incorporating elements as wide-ranging as lyric opera and art-song cycles to conceptual hip-hop and experimental electronica. The work is immersive and experiential in nature, with additional creative direction by Jacob Jonas, wardrobe by Greg Lauren, and visuals by Michael N. Meyer. The music is written for a hybrid ensemble implementing strings, woodwinds, brass, synthesizers,
multiple vocalists, bass, drums, guitar, piano and multiple keyboards, with Hackman conducting, playing, and singing. Chapters I and II premiered at underground performances in March and June of 2023.
In the Summer of 2022, in a span of three weeks, Hackman created And I Love Her: The Music of the Beatles Reimagined. It depicts the music of the Beatles through the lens of the women that inspired them and the female characters they invented through their music and lyrics. The two-act production combines the symphony orchestra with an R&B band and four vocalists, as the music careens across the spectrum between classical and pop, from a post-romantic tone-poem reimagining of “Eleanor Rigby” to a funk- and gospel-inspired version of “She’s A Woman.”
Hackman serves as the conductor and curator of the BSO Fusion with the Baltimore Symphony, presenting multiple concerts per year of his fusion productions. He is Creative Director and Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony’s Uncharted Series, one of the most successful millennial-focused concert experiences in the country. Hackman has been instrumental in the development of this concert series since 2010.
Hackman has teamed up with some of the biggest pop superstars of today to add a signature virtuosic and classical dimension to their work, including Steve Lacy, Doja Cat, and Andrew Bird. He was trained at the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and holds degrees in Orchestral Conducting and Piano Performance. He recently taught his first course at the Juilliard School entitled “Fusion, Re-imagination and Revelation.” He is active on Instagram under @stevehackmanmusic.
Kaylah Sharve’, a multifaceted vocalist, actress, and model based in Los Angeles, California, hails from Louisiana and was raised in Houston, Texas. Her affinity for the stage emerged early, beginning with performances at her hometown Baptist church and progressing through musical theatre and various industry talent showcases. At 14, Kaylah launched her professional recording career, marked by the release of her debut EP, “1999” which she co-wrote, with several tracks produced by Grammy-nominated professionals. Influenced by icons such as Brandy Norwood, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Summer Walker, and Kierra Sheard, Kaylah has cultivated a distinctive artistic voice throughout her adolescence and career.
Kaylah studied Popular Music Performance at the University of Southern California, where she excelled as a member of the awardwinning SoCal Vocals, earning the title of Outstanding Vocalist in collegiate competitions during her freshman and sophomore years. Initially focused on R&B, she transitioned to the pop genre in 2018 after joining the American girl group Citizen Queen and signing with RCA Records. The group supported Pentatonix on their global tour in 2019 and has since created original music that has garnered millions of views across streaming platforms.
Kaylah has collaborated with Grammy-winning superstars such as Scott Hoying, Bryson Tiller, Meghan Trainor, Tayla Parx, Nova Wav, and Justin Tranter. Her other passions for modeling and acting have led to professional engagements with Disney, Warner Bros, Universal Records, Sony, Apple TV, Peacock, NBC, TME Modeling, Louis Vuitton, MAC, Dark & Lovely, among others. As a multi-talented artist, Kaylah Sharve’ continues to inspire and aims to leave a lasting impact on her audience.
Hailing previously from Dallas, Texas, Brayla, known as brays.anatomy on social media, is fast making her place in the industry with her rhythmic harmonies, infusing the genres of R&B, Gospel, and Hip-Hop to create a unique sound. Brayla is a graduate of Berklee College of Music where she received her BA in Songwriting in 2021. During that time, she ventured into many activities that jump started her career as a performer. She was a member of Berklee’s renowned acapella group Pitch Slapped, where she led their viral performance of Beyoncé’s “Deja Vu” in 2018.
Now at the age of 24, Brayla continues making her mark in the industry opening for artists like Kenyon Dixon and Avery Wilson as a vocalist in the up and coming artist collective known as Treway & the Now Generation. Some of her most notable accomplishments to date include her feature on Donald Lawerence’s latest project Donald Lawrence Presents Power: A Tribute to Twinkie Clark in 2023, and a live performance with Jon Batiste on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to her additional vocals on “Worship” from Jon Batiste’s G RAMMY nominated album World Music Radio . The key to her sound is the orchestration of background vocals that lay within the stories her lyrics tell. “I aim to be limitless in my music. Every time I release something I want to explore the depths of my ability to create something that knows no bounds. Any melody, any lyric… I mean anything is possible,“ explains Brayla.
She has now dropped two EPs, books a slew of live shows, and continues to build her online presence through her socials. As she pushes forward in her pursuits, she aspires to continue to be a student of music throughout her career. Her hope is to inspire many more like her to always enjoy the freedom of self expression that music can be.
Malia Civetz has performed as a vocal soloist on countless occasions across the United States and around Europe in Steve Hackman’s symphonic fusions. She began working with Steve Hackman in January 2015 performing in Beethoven X Coldplay and continues to lend her voice to that piece and a growing list of symphonic fusions including Stravinsky’s Firebird Remix-Response, Tchaikovsky X Drake, Skull and Bones, The Times They Are-A-Changin’, Bartók X Björk, and Beethoven X Beyoncé.
Malia, a recording artist and songwriter, signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music after graduating from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music’s Popular Music Program. Post-college, she linked up with powerhouse songwriters, Ross Golan and JKash, signing to their newly created joint label. She initially made waves with her independent single “Champagne Clouds” debuted by Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM morning show On Air With Ryan Seacrest. The song quickly earned 20 million-plus streams and made Taylor Swift’s ‘Favorite Songs’ playlists on both Apple Music and Spotify. She moved on to sign a record deal with Warner Records making her major label debut in 2020 with her first EP, The Flip, featuring hit radio single “Broke Boy.” Malia unveiled her second EP, Heels In Hand, featuring “Partied Out” and fan-favorite “Sugar Daddy.” Her work has amassed love from numerous publications and has landed spots in major film, tv, and commercial productions. Surpassing 165 million total streams as an artist and songwriter, Malia continues to also write for a variety of artists across numerous genres.
Her musical accomplishments span well over a decade with early highlights that include performing as a “Star of Tomorrow” at New York’s Apollo Theater at age 13, having the privilege to sing for President Obama at age 16 and performing in Barry Manilow’s show at the Paris Las Vegas at 17.

Dmitry Gorodetsky was born in Russia, former Soviet Union and moved with his family to the U.S. at the age of 10. His family settled in Massachusetts, an hour west of Boston so there was lots of musical inspiration nearby. He began playing music early on starting with drums at the age of three, and then exploring piano, guitar, trumpet and then finally settling on upright and electric bass. Music became the main focus in his life by his teenage years and countless hours were spent on practicing. Dmitry studied with local teachers and was inspired by many jazz musicians from the area. He played his first professional gig at the age of 14 and so began his career as bassist, eventually performing with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi and drummer Bob Gulotti amongst many others in the Boston jazz scene.
As he got deeper into music his musical tastes also evolved. He was inspired by everything from Jimi Hendrix, Beatles and Rolling Stones to Hip Hop to Blues as well as funk soul R&B and pop music. While still in his teenage years he also ended up traveling to Europe with a symphony orchestra playing double bass. Specifically on acoustic bass, his influences range from Jimmy Garrison, Ray Brown, and Sam Jones to electric bassists like Pino Palladino, Anthony Jackson, Louis Johnson, James Jamerson, and Larry Graham. Dmitry has performed, toured and recorded with the following artists: Charlie Puth, Usher, John Legend, Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Ledisi, Dionne Warwick, Lauryn Hill, Fantasia, Eric Benet, Kenny Lattimore, Wycleffe Jean, Rita Ora, Nas, Christina Aguilera, New Kids on the Block, TLC, and 50 Cent. He has toured all over Europe, South America, Middle East, and the Carribean as well as US and North America. He has also made many TV appearances including Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Morning America, Ellen Show, The Voice, Today Show, and VH1 Morning Buzz amongst many other TV series and commercials. Also recently he was part of a G RAMMY -winning album by John Legend Bigger Love which won in the category of R&B album of the year. For the past three years he has been touring the world with Usher including playing in the most recent Super Bowl halftime show.
Dallas native TaRon Lockett is a 2x G RAMMY -nominated drummer/ producer who has worked with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Ceelo Green, Prince, Liv Warfield, Willie Nelson, Sheila E, and DJ DNice and currently tours with Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles.
Max Townsley is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter, and singer based in Dallas, Texas. He has toured the globe extensively as a guitarist and keyboardist with Jon Batiste, Midlake, and Neon Indian/ Alan Palomo. He composed and performed the music for the film Song of the Cicada . As a songwriter he has penned songs for Keith Urban and Sabrina Claudio. His vocals were featured in the first episode of the HBO series Generation . Max also works as a session musician, playing guitar and keyboards on many musical projects for artists such as Lauren Daigle, Alessia Cara, and Brittany Howard. Most recently, Max has appeared in the feature film Saturday Night and contributed to the soundtrack.

• If I weren’t a musician, I would pursue a career in science.
• If I could meet any composer, it would be Béla Bartók because I’m interested in how he handles the intersection between classical and popular music.
• Outside of work, I enjoy biking and cooking.
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is one of the premier music organizations in the Southeastern United States and the oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in the Carolinas. As Charlotte’s most active performing arts group, the CSO presents around 150 concerts each season, reaching more than 130,000 music lovers.
The 2024-25 season marks a transformative era under the dynamic leadership of newly appointed Music Director Kwamé Ryan. With 65 full-time musicians, the Symphony performs throughout the community in a variety of venues, from the Belk and Knight theaters to parks, breweries, community centers, schools, senior care centers, and places of worship. With its new mobile stage, CSO Roadshow, the Symphony extends its reach directly into neighborhoods, bringing live music to communities across the region.
Engaging with more than 10,000 students each year, the Charlotte Symphony nurtures the next generation of musicians and music lovers through its four diverse youth orchestras, in-school education programs, instrument coaching, and Project Harmony — which offers free after-school lessons in music and life skills to over 200 students in under-resourced areas.
The Charlotte Symphony uplifts, entertains, and educates the diverse communities of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and beyond through exceptional musical experiences.
Reaching out through the transformative power of live music, the Charlotte Symphony will be a civic leader, reflecting and uniting our region.
