Welcome!
The sights and sounds of the holidays in Charlotte are all around us – the twinkling lights of decorated homes, festive popup markets in Uptown, and, of course, the music of your Charlotte Symphony! We’re so pleased to offer a variety of ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones this month. First, what would the holidays be without the great tradition of Handel’s Messiah and the Charlotte Master Chorale? Ian Watson, Principal Keyboardist and Associate Conductor of the Handel & Haydn Society, brings fresh insight to the beloved work, conducting from the harpsichord. Gather the whole family for our joyful Magic of Christmas and enjoy singalongs, falling snow, and your favorite seasonal classics, with star entertainer Tony DeSare and Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees (and who knows, maybe a surprise guest along the way)! Neither will you want to miss the unveiling of Thorgy Thor’s fun and inventive holiday show, nor the awe-inspiring acrobatics of Cirque de Noël!
We also warmly encourage you to support Charlotte Ballet’s holiday tradition of presenting the Nutcracker, with the musicians of the Charlotte Symphony back in the pit to bring Tchaikovsky’s timeless score to life! I hope you’ll join us to ring in the New Year with American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle who will sing soulful tunes from artists like Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. If you’re still working on your holiday shopping, we’ve just opened up a new shop with items sure to delight the music lovers in your life. You can find a curated list on page 12 of this program. Thank you for making the CSO part of your family tradition this year. We wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season.

A SALUTE TO
THE MAESTRO 12 Brilliant Seasons with Christopher Warren-Green
2021-22 marks Christopher WarrenGreen’s valedictory lap as Music Director after twelve seasons at the helm of the Charlotte Symphony — a tenure that has been marked by a broadening of repertoire and innovative programming, attracting some of the world’s foremost soloists to the Charlotte stage. Throughout the season, we’ll honor the Maestro’s legacy of musical excellence in Charlotte before he takes on the titles of Music Adviser and Conductor Laureate, a title bestowed upon former Music Directors who have made a significant impact and have formed and shaped the institution’s artistic quality over time. We hope you’ll join us throughout Maestro Warren-Green’s farewell season, where he’ll lead some of his favorite works — including Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, and Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Maestro will close out his tenure as Music Director by leading the CSO and the Charlotte Master Chorale in Beethoven’s epic Ninth Symphony. Help us honor Maestro Warren-Green in his final season as Music Director by sharing your favorite memories on social media with the hashtag #cltsymphony. And see what CSO musicians and supporters have to say about the Maestro in this charming farewell video: Celebrating Christopher Warren-Green 4 salute to the maestro

conductor Tara Villa Keith conductor These performances mark Tara Keith’s first appearance with the Charlotte Symphony.
Tara Villa Keith is in her nineteenth season as music director of the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra (DCSO) in North Carolina where she is an associate professor of music. She recently completed an eleven-season tenure as music director of the Lee County Community Orchestra (LCCO) in Sanford, North Carolina. With the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Tara has served as a cover conductor and pre-concert speaker for several seasons, and was the premiere instructor for their Symphony 101 adult education program. Tara was recognized as a 2019 Honored Artist of The American Prize, a series of non-profit national competitions in the performing arts. Under Tara’s direction, the DCSO was the national winner of The American Prize 2018 for orchestral performance in the collegiate division. Outside of Davidson, Tara has conducted orchestras throughout the south and northeast. She has particularly enjoyed serving as a clinician and guest conductor for middle and high school orchestras in North Carolina, performing with the Northwest School of the Arts Symphonic Orchestra in 2019 and the North Carolina Eastern Regional String Orchestra in 2017. Tara has participated in summer festivals such as the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine and the Hot Springs Music Festival in Arkansas. After winning the 6 conductor
International Conducting Competition in 2008, Tara guest conducted the Macon Symphony Orchestra in Georgia. Other engagements include performances with the Union Symphony Orchestra (North Carolina), Capitol Opera Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), and Opera at USC (South Carolina). Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Tara grew up studying percussion and piano at the Preparatory of the Peabody Conservatory. Tara’s previous conducting mentors include Brian Norcross, Gerardo Edelstein, and Donald Portnoy. Tara holds degrees from Franklin & Marshall College, the Pennsylvania State University, and the University of South Carolina. Off the podium she is an active competitive ballroom dancer, and when time permits, she also enjoys practicing yoga, playing with her many cats, birding with her horn-playing husband, Eric, and keeping up with their energetic daughter, Villanaia.

Cirque de la Symphonie is an exciting production designed to bring the magic of cirque to the music hall. For more than 15 years, it has thrilled and bedazzled veteran concert-goers and new patrons as they see accomplished aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and strongmen perform to live symphony music. They include world record-holders, goldmedal winners of international competitions, Olympians, and some of the most experienced cirque talent ever seen. Their performances are uniquely adapted to stage accommodations shared with the symphony, and each artist’s performance is choreographed to the music arranged in collaboration with the maestro. When the artists of Cirque de la Symphonie perform in front of the full orchestra, an incredible fusion of these two great art forms takes place. The aerialists and acrobats turn the concert into a three-dimensional entertainment extravaganza, and the orchestra seems to play with enhanced enthusiasm.

Denielle Wilson joined the Charlotte Symphony in 2021 as Acting Section Cello. A musician and educator from Lithonia, Georgia, Denielle has played in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and recently completed her master’s degree as a diversity fellow with the Cincinnati Symphony and University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. She has taught privately in the Atlanta and Chicago areas and has been a string orchestra teacher and coach for elementary, middle, and high school students. Denielle also plays in a piano trio with her siblings, Dana and Cliff Jr., and they enjoy sharing classical and religious music with their local community. When asked what she’s looking forward to most about living and working in Charlotte she said, “I look forward to getting to know the outdoor beauty of Charlotte, making new friends, and growing more familiar with the feelings of playing in an orchestra full-time.” musicians 9

Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, Movie, and Family series, plus other special performances with notable soloists. We also serve as the soundtrack to our community’s ballet and opera productions. We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches and unifies our community.
