BRIEF Every individual possesses a different ability to perceive, process and recollect the information that he or she comes across. Complexity is a relative term for everyone. For some social media is complex, and for some God is. Usually things outside our domain tend to feel complex to us. Even a simple beard trimmer comes with a booklet of instructions, only because of the chance that the buyer is going to use a trimmer for the first time. From recipes to rockets to religion, everything is complex to people who are not from the same domain as the subject. Deconstruct as a word encompasses many allied concepts which allow you to disintegrate the subject as it is known and leads to new knowledge. Deconstruct is a process of breaking something down to its separate parts in order to understand its meaning; especially when it is different from how it was previously understood. Deconstruction is a tool of understanding concepts in detail. It is a deliberate practice of explaining concepts by dividing it in best consumable parts leaving no space for doubt or confusion. It can not be an accidental act. Deconstruction is an opposite of summarization. It is opposite of the idea of “ taking a wide spread of essential information and making it consumable by representing it in compact but aesthetic and logical way, so that viewer or consumer of information can utilize it better. We can look at deconstruction as a process of Unbuilding. Where subject is methodically segregated and unfolded or unraveled to its core building blocks without discarding anything. After studying an existing association between these elements, we can assign or discover a new meaning for the interrelation of elements.

1

French theorist and philosopher Jacques Derrida defined deconstruction as a ‘Mode of criticism’. He proposed a theory and methods of deconstruction in Literary arts and philosophy.

Complexity

A deconstructive approach to criticism involves discovering, recognising and understanding the underlying and unspoken and implicit assumptions, ideas and frameworks of cultural forms such as works of art. Where as postmodernist architects used deconstruction to rule out ideas established by modernism and bring a completely new spacial experience to the world. Where clearly deconstructivism was used to a greater cause than just a criticism. Scope of Project This Project enables you to pick a subject to be deconstructed. Subject can be of following nature- product, concept, element, emotion, phenomenon, process, opinion, individual, experience or idea. Without getting stuck in a linear explanatory method, how can one design an experience of the subject where each building block of the subject can be open for interpretation and information. Choosing a channel of expression to help audience or user to experience the subject in detail and new perspective through visual design, multidimensional and multisensory experience, an audio visual amalgamation or performance, traditional or innovative media.

PROPOSAL CONTEXT/BACKGROUND

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Been told numerous times that, “I am a typical Cancerian”, the question arose of what a Cancerian is like? Hence my curiosity lead me to read about zodiac signs and that’s where I gained interest in this specific subject. I personally have always been very keen in studying zodiac signs and since school I always tried to relate my friends, family members personalities and behaviours according to their zodiac signs. A lot of people tend to ignore their zodiac signs and at the same time, there are many believers. Through my project I wish to tap into this curiosity. Western Astrology uses seasons and symbols to validate their behavioural patterns. Like the Cancerian’s symbol which is a crab, it is necessary for them to develop a tougher outer shell in order to protect the soft and vulnerable inner self from damage. A lot of philosophy goes into understanding how all factors like symbols, seasons, placement of the sun etc., come together to build up a zodiac sign. There has also been a lot of interest where people get together and enjoy reading about their zodiac signs, and practise it on a day to day basis. Once you start reading about your sun signs you try matching the qualities with your friends, co-workers and partners to see how relatable you are to your zodiac sign. A lot of people read about their signs daily and try following what the sign advices on a day to day basis where as there are many who neglect the idea too because they feel there is no scientific evidence for it. Yet every day, newspapers prints an astrology columns which purport to provide guidance on what might occur in a day in relation to the sign of the zodiac. Astrologers refer to this as the “sun sign”, but it is often commonly called the “star sign”. A lot of times, business decisions are based according to the lucky day their star sign supports them e.g. business meetings are based on a specific day which is of their favour hence I want

Zodiac signs are closely related to our body and personality, through research this project aims to understand how zodiac signs influence our personality and characteristics. Also, to get clarity on the never-ending debate of are zodiac signs a matter of belief or non-belief.

to understand what leads people to follow star signs and base their decisions on it and on the contrary there are a handful of people who are neglecting the idea of Sun Sign. A lot of curiosity hence follows in understanding the complexities which go behind a zodiac sign.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES •This project aims to open dialogue about zodiac signs as to understand why people don’t believe in them? Also, even if there is no scientific evidence for it, there are still people who believe in it. •To gain a better understanding on how seasons, symbols, position of the sun, colour, ruling planet and a lot of other factors come together to form a zodiac sign according to Western Astrology. •To make people aware of the theories behind the symbols of their star sign and how it reflects one’s behaviour and personality and not follow them blindly. •How compatibility of the zodiac signs is directly proportional to the behaviour of four of the elements; fire, water, air and earth. APPROACH AND PROCESS DESIGN THINKING TOOLS: •Interpretation of Data: Through this activity we learnt how to look at an idea from different lenses, find the core of an idea and create a visualization for the same. •Deconstruction of a Toy: Looking at an object from physical, historical, functional and social view gave us understanding on how to deconstruct an object and more clarity on deconstruction. •Lotus Bloom Exercise: Through this exercise we learnt how to make links and connections we wouldn’t have looked into otherwise. It opened more areas for us to look into contexts as well.

PRIMARY RESEARCH: •Visit to astrologers to get a better clarity of Star Signs •Conducting interviews of people to understand their take and belief •By conducting Behaviour Assessment Tests to check if people behave in the same way their star sign talks about their behaviour SECONDARY RESEARCH: •Reading and gathering data from online websites and blogs •Gathering information from books and magazines •Watching videos on the web to understand different takes on the topic •Taking inspiration from The Zodiac Collection by Colour Pop on how it connects to your star sign RESEARCH QUESTIONS •How do zodiac signs influence your personality, characteristics and emotions? •Why are certain symbols associated with each sign? •How seasons, symbols, position of the sun, colour, ruling planet and a lot of other factors come together to form a zodiac sign according to Western Astrology? •Zodiac signs is a matter of belief and non-belief because it has been portrayed as a myth or something beyond our reality, hence to get a clarity why the topic has been a subject of ambiguity.

1

TARGET AUDIENCE The project will open to be an interaction for all teenagers and college going students who are constantly seeking assurance and are looking up at their star signs due to academic, life pressure hoping for better things ahead and reading them, hence I’d like to give them more information and make them aware of the theories behind their signs. For the believers of zodiac signs, it will yield them more information to understand their signs better and give them more theories which would benefit them to know

Complexity

more about their zodiac signs, and for the non-believers it can be a good read which gives them entertainment. WORK DONE IN SIMILAR AREAS With the use of symbols and icons, a lot of visual possibilities open to explore. A shop in the United States called as Often Wanderer, has made Natural Wax Candles where they have incorporated qualities and insights from each star sign, and have customized each candle according to the star sign’s qualities and traits. A daily utility product serves to be of use and also can be used as a good birthday gift. For example, A Scorpion Candle, this water sign’s essence is jasmine and amber. Resourceful, brave, passionate, observant, and a true friend, this scent is as dynamic as a Scorpio. A rich and warm floral mix that soothes the Scorpion soul. You can get one for the Scorpio friend/family/lover in your life. FINAL OUTPUT •A comical, satirical visual approach which will help in understanding the difference of opinions which will remain, and also give more information about star signs. •Designing lifestyle and personal utility products where qualities and insights from star signs can be present but even without them it can prove to be a great functional artefact or product.

REFLECTIVE NOTE

This project gave me the oppurtunity to delve deep into a topic I have always been interested in and made me aware of how zodiac signs influence our behaviour and personalities. It made me realise how important primary research is and how the journey from research to conceptualization forms its way through process. I also learnt how necessay it is to dig deep into a subject, and extract the valuable information which strengthes one’s project. The challenging factor for me was to find an area which would interest believers and non believers of zodiac signs due to the debatable belief factor. It was the first time I was doing a project for the span of three months, but the interest remained throughout, and the execution phase was the most exciting because that is when the visuals give the project it’s life. Illustration has always been my fear, but slowly I overcame the fear, by incorporating typography for balance. I also learnt how precise one should be with measurements when dealing with packaging design. Overall, the project was a great learning experience, and it would not be possible without
