Apprenticeships and internships
Apprenticeships and Internships I know what you’re thinking: “What’s the point of being an unpaid apprentice when I can rather find a job and start earning money straight away?” Unfortunately real life is not that simple, but non-paid training positions do give you the chance to get that career start you’re looking for Apprenticeships and internships are nowhere near

free hiring decision. They have seen how well you manage to do in the workplace, how you mix with your co-workers and whether you are interested in learning and working hard. This means that they can make a much more informed decision than if they had only met you once or spoken over the phone. It works both ways, though, because many positions in the transport and automotive industries require very specific skill sets – things you might not learn in your usual Mathematics, Science and other school classes. So, by giving you an apprenticeship, a company is basically giving you free training … that’s pretty cool isn’t it?

Wanna get greasy? Volvo can help! The role of diesel technician is one of the most sought after in the country. Reshie Bilkisson, technical training manager in charge of apprenticeships at Volvo Group South Africa, tells us why it could be the career for you! Are you determined to succeed in an environment with many challenges? Are you hungry to accept a wealth of knowledge and to be the best? Are you also passionate about the commercial vehicle and technical industry? Joining an apprentice programme, like the one offered by Volvo, could be the next step on your journey to becoming a highly valued professional in the motor industry. “In recent years there’s been a vast decline in the technical skills of technicians in South Africa. The older generation is moving on and we’re not finding new young people with the right skills to fill these positions,” says Bilkisson. “This programme is a drive from the Volvo Group to upskill and uplift the youth of South Africa, who will be the next generation of technicians.”

Unfortunately most of these old cars aren’t working anymore, so somebody needs to restore them to their once proud condition. A restorer usually starts from the ground up. Every dealership has someone who is in charge. In the motoring industry we call them the dealer principal. These guys look after the entire inner workings of the dealership. Every tiny detail needs to be approved or discussed with him/her. This person came up with start-up capital and bought into a specific brand. In South Africa, that’s almost impossible. Panel beater and spray painter Cars are rarely written off in small accidents. Small bumps, scrapes and dents are really not a big deal. These days they are easily fixable and can be taken care of within a few weeks. Panel beating is a difficult and precise job. The panel beaters take delivery of the vehicle after the accident and do a walk around. They set up a quote for a customer depending on the amount of damage sustained. The customer – together with their insurer – approves the quote and the panel beater orders everything he needs to fix the car. Spray painting is another form of art. Sometimes a car just needs to be re-sprayed after an accident. Others want to make their old car look sharp again. Still others like having a custom paintjob. Tyre technician Do you know the phrase “to drive something ’till its wheels come off”? It means to drive something until it dies, but it also means that you should fairly regularly consider new tyres. Where to go to find these tyres? To your nearest tyre dealership, where on the inside, you will find your friendly neighbourhood tyre technician. Tyres may just seem like simple pieces of rubber, but there is a lot more to them than that. You may not believe this, but tyres are actually technologically advanced. Tyre technicians understand this. Naturally, a person cannot fit so-called dubs (or whatever the rappers call them these days) on a Mini Cooper. Firstly, they’ll look absolutely foolish, and secondly, the Mini won’t move at all. Tyre technicians help you to choose the correct tyre for your specific needs and then they fit them. All the tyres a person could ever need can be found under one roof. Along with tyre fitments, technicians also offer a wide range of customer services that have to do with wheels. Things like wheel alignment and fixing punctures. Paperwork: Cool stuff:

PARTING THOUGHTS
Is the automotive industry for me? As with any industry, many aspects of the automotive sector are really only for certain types of people. With many of the occupations outlined in this booklet, having certain personality traits, particular ways of thinking and, obviously, a certain skill set will benefit you. Personality At the top of the list here has to be a keen interest in and passion for any and all automobiles, transport as a whole, as well as people. Many jobs demand long hours, can put you under pressure and may be repetitive, but with the right passion and enthusiasm this shouldn’t matter. In many cases, you will need to be creative, organised, practical, accurate and precise. Good people and communication skills are essential for certain jobs, while more physically demanding jobs require you to be strong, dextrous and have stamina. Thinking Those in the automotive industry are generally logical thinkers. A step-by-step approach to life is therefore a must. Of course, there are certain occupations that require a more whimsical approach, such as a graphic designer, for example. Other key ways of thinking include an eye for detail, having a good grasp on realism of reality and being able to analyse things well. Safety is more than a buzz word in the automotive industry – you need to be safety conscious. Skill In many cases, good eye-hand coordination (and with that, steady and deft hand movements) and the ability to visualise things in 3D will be necessary. You will need to be able to work quickly and accurately, as deadlines are often tight. In more technical roles, the ability to read plans and specifications and visualise one-dimensional plans and drawings in 3D will be needed. You may have to interpret them and figure out which materials, tools and processes are necessary to achieve the desired results (don’t worry, most of that comes with experience). Scientific, mathematical and technical thinking could also crop up with certain careers.
