The Ultimate Family Car? I wonder if the FF was initially created with new fathers in mind - dreading giving up their beloved sports cars when the little ones arrive or even a perfectly blended cocktail of features picked from the finest family motors to create the ultimate four seater? Chartwell Magazine +2 takes one of Ferrari’s newest editions for a spin across the beautiful English countryside, venturing from the Lake District to the Cotswolds and perusing some of England’s finest hotels along the way.

The Ferrari FF comes complete with Ferrari’s trademark head turning engine purr and aesthetically the four seats have been blended perfectly into the sporty chassis. The FF we test is in Ferrari’s signature colour – Maranello red. Though heard before seen the FF attracts vast amounts of spectators across our drive. The buyer of the FF should be uber-confident and relish the attention that only a motor of Ferrari’ s rare calibre attracts. Our model was superbly spec’d, retailing in the region of £290,000. The attention to detail and fine craftsmanship is immediately appreciated upon opening the car door – the leather is cut and stretched to perfection and uniformed stitching surrounds the upholstery. Furthermore the driver and passenger cabins are surprisingly spacious – the rear seats are also roomy. The children are also very happy in the back – not because they are in a Ferrari but because they have their wireless headphones on and are tuned in to their favourite DVDs through the built in entertainment system before we even leave Ferrari HQ. The FF boasts 660 BHP meaning it is one of the most powerful cars on the market. The engine is a rather huge 6.3 litre v12. The mpg on our trip averages around 20, certainly not economical, though if you are spending upwards of £200,000 on a car I’m not sure this is likely to deter a purchase.

The FF has been heavily tested in the snow, meaning it is even possible to take a weekend trips to The Alps – a forbidden territory in most sports cars. The steering is light around town, though provides just the right amount of tension on the motorway. Easily picking up speed you would barely notice you were travelling at 70mph so a close eye on the speedo is a must. A not so common 7-speed dual clutch transaxle gearbox assists with powering the car.

The boot space is ample for a couple travelling with luggage or compact family baggage at 450 litres – about the same as a BMW 3 series saloon. It is even possible to fold down the rear seats to achieve a greater luggage capacity.

The European property market is still in flux, given the turmoil that the Eurozone countries are currently going through. Opportunities still arise, but there can still be serious local issues. However, the mortgage application process is potentially more painful than ever before. The most popular destinations in Europe to buy property are France, Spain and at the higher end, Monaco. The French property market is showing signs of recession, in Spain property is being repossessed and coming back on to the market, whereas Monaco carries on regardless! Lending has always been tougher in Europe than in the UK, because lenders have always taken a holistic look at an applicant’s finances. This is, of course, the sensible approach because it takes into account a person’s liabilities and ability to repay a loan, as opposed to just income multiples. Interest-only loans are generally frowned-upon, demonstrating the greater risk-aversion to lending in Europe. In many respects, it is more akin to the way that mortgage lending used to operate in the UK many years ago – more cautious, more considered and more personal. France has traditionally been a country to purchase for lifestyle and retirement as opposed to investment purposes. A few years ago the plunging pound was forcing people in Britain to

abandon the idea of buying holiday or retirement homes in France, but there are signs that things are changing. I have clients who have an exchange rate threshold in mind when they will jump back in to the French property market and that threshold is currently not that far away. Interest rates in France are low and many mortgages are arranged on a variable basis. Fixed rates are far less common than they are in the UK, but as with all mortgage deals. Monaco is, of course, top end and the €1m plus property market is doing quite well. Monaco has not been completely immune to the credit crunch and subsequent recession, but its status as a tax haven has ensured that it remains very popular with international buyers. The weakening Euro will only help the property market recover more quickly and there is still a shortage of new-build properties, ensuring that prices remain strong. Spain has suffered economically in the past few years and the bank bailouts and austerity measures are taking their toll. Spain has traditionally been a place where people buy to invest as opposed to just retiring and at present there are opportunities to be had. The rental market is holding up well and there are quite a

few properties coming on to the market that are repossessed stock. It’s important to exercise a note of caution here – do your research first, particularly regarding independent legal and valuation advice! There is plenty of stock in Spain and there are opportunities to bargain vendors down. It’s a little unclear at this stage what the full impact of the austerity measures will be in Spain. There may well be a greater backlash if the banks there require further bailouts and austerity gets tougher. Any prospective buyer should get an expert to do research for them with regards to whether a property has the appropriate licences and permissions. You’d be amazed how many people don’t do this, particularly those that are on holiday in the country already. The whole process for buying a property overseas is now more protracted than ever and requires delicate handling. There are opportunities and mortgages available, but be prepared to work harder to achieve what you want, and don’t be surprised if the process of securing funding is a bit of a minefield. As investors turn to investment advisers for support and recommendations for their investment portfolio, so too do art collectors turn to independent art advisers who are not tied down to an inventory and provide a higher level of transparency in facilitating trades. Art can provide an asset class uncorrelated to the traditional investment to increase the diversification of an investment portfolio. Furthermore, investors have been able to realise gains. For example, the popularity of Monet has increased the value of his work tremendously in the last 10 years. An example of his Poplars series sold for USD 6.4 million in 2000, the same work realised USD 22.4 million in 2011. Despite the historical rise, there are still risks when acquiring any investment. The ownership of art can be as a transparent as the collector wants either to satisfy a communal goal and loan a work to a museum or donate a piece for tax and philanthropic purposes. Art is portable and can be moved for reasons of safety or resale.

The value of art is dependent on many factors and here is where the similarity between art and traditional investments diverges. There is no single characteristic that will indicate value in all circumstances. Whether the painting is real or fake and if the leading authorities agree is paramount in determining the value. Who is the artist? Is it an excellent example by that artist? What is the condition of the piece? Is there proper title? Who were the previous owners? Can the piece be easily exported and what are the duties, if applicable? There are many issues that collectors can mitigate by using professionals. Trades can be made through auction houses like Sotheby’s or Christie’s or by ‘private treaty’ sales. Either method has advantages and disadvantages. Auction houses have the benefit of a public price but also come with greater costs and the uncertainty of the end result. Private treaty sales bring greater certainty; potentially lower costs and higher confidentiality with a personally negotiated price not subject to the upward pressure of an auction process. The first step is finding an unbiased adviser to manage the risks and help the collector meet the goals of the collection and their overall investment portfolio. Whilst last year’s budget left a lot of people undecided as to what to do, so far in 2013 indications are we’re in for a busy year ahead. Without doubt the extra 2% SDLT made a difference to properties between £2m - £5m, (SDLT is now 7% for properties over £2m when bought in an individual’s name and 15% if purchased in a company structure); traction in this price range was definitely lost with sales down nearly 20% since the peak of late 2011.

Market Review What a difference a year makes – last Spring saw the introduction of the new levels of SDLT, which had an immediate & tangible impact on the property market between £2-5 Million. However, a year on, it would see the market is finally moving again.

Despite this brief weakening in demand there is a strong on-going interest in London property from overseas buyers. With Sterling having fallen over 11% against the Euro from its recent peak last June, this currency weakness has gone some way to mitigating the rise in stamp duty and proposed taxation on property held through company structures. Underpinning this, the Central London property market has benefited from policy changes in the Eurozone such as Francis Hollande’s much publicised wealth tax, and political unrest in other countries, whilst international demand in London remained strong, particularly from the Middle and Far East. Add to this the growing realisation that a return to economic growth looks set to be a longer road than anticipated - October saw the IMF cut its forecast for many world economies, with UK economic forecast being downgraded from 1.45% to 1.1% for 2013. Amid this uncertainty bricks & mortar, particularly those in Prime Central London remain a tangible safe haven. Forecasts for the UK house prices as a whole for 2013 range from a pessimistic -5% from Capital Economics to +2% from the RICS, with higher growth levels not expected until 2014. And then there is (Super) London a market that has risen an astonishing 59% since 2011 (according to Knight Frank), we have seen this ourselves for the best addresses but can it continue at this rate? As long as this level of the market is driven by trophy hunting and a shortage of stock as more and more buyers come to London, we believe so. Overseas buyers have continued to flock to London over the past few years. Whilst the motivations to owning a home in the capital are many and varied, continued global economic uncertainty and associated exchange rates remain a significant reason in the buying decisions of many overseas investors. By way of example, buyers in Sterling have seen prices in Kensington & Chelsea increase 32% since 2008 – the equivalent of adding more than £250,000 to the average house price. The only other buyer to have seen a devaluation of similar proportions would be those from India buying in Rupees with a similar price rise (30%).

So who has benefited the most from Sterling’s correction? You may not be surprised with houses and flats in Greater London now trading at prices 6% higher than in December 2007 (in Sterling terms) expressed in Renmimbi; they are down by 26%. Such has been the depreciation due to the exchange rates the appetite for block investments from Chinese buyers has been a prominent feature once more. In the same period, Prime Central London properties have risen by nearly 20% in Sterling terms but fallen 23% in Renmimbi. While the Chinese currency is the most impressive and the impact has been less marked in other major currencies, London property still looks “cheap” for foreign investors. What is proving popular though in terms of what is purchased? Both freehold houses and lateral flats remain popular as London pads and pure long-term investments. But amongst others rental investments and also development opportunities are keenly sought. Whilst freehold proves popular, particularly for foreign buyers “sowing” their wealth for future generations, younger (often overseas educated) foreign investors are appreciating the nuances of short leases and enfranchisement. This is making the development sector keenly contested. Most of our international clients would prefer to buy something “turnkey” that they can move straight into, but there is still a lot of demand for owner occupiers wanting to put their own mark on a property meaning unmodernised properties are often bid up and beyond the costing models of professional developers. Clearly the Chartwell Group is able to help in both these circumstances. Portugal is a country with something for everyone. From historic cities such as Porto and Coimbra to the rich cultural centre that is Lisbon or the Douro Valley near Porto. Of course for many, Portugal usually conjures up pictures of beautiful Algarve beaches. With the highest amount of sunshine in Europe it is easy to see why the Algarve remains such a popular holiday destination.. But what is even more interesting for the international investor than this romantic imagery is that in October 2012 the Portuguese government passed a new law allowing investors from non-EU countries to gain residency if they either transfer one million or more Euros in capital into Portugal, form a business that creates a minimum of 30 jobs, or (more importantly for readers of this article) purchase a property to the value of a minimum of €500,000. Portugal is working hard to attach rich, qualified individuals who are willing to invest in the cash-strapped country but with other countries working harder and harder to secure foreign investment, competition is fierce. Colloquially called the “Golden Passport,” this new visa will allow non-EU citizens to receive a visa, permitting them to enter and stay in Portugal assuming at least one of the above is undertaken for a minimum period of five years. Once the investor has met one of the above investment criteria they have the right to family regrouping and

may gain access to a permanent residence permit, as well as to Portuguese citizenship in line with current legal situation. Although it is early days for the Golden Passport programme and the Portuguese government may yet make some changes, it is looking positive if you are looking to become a European Union citizen in the future. Chartwell believe these new laws may trigger a demand for second homes from outside the Euro Zone, with an emerging international mobile class of investors (particularly in India & China) investing in second home properties with the added bonus of European citizenship. One Hyde Park When creating the interior design scheme for this 4,535 square foot apartment in One Hyde Park, Casa Forma’s focus was on practicality and functionality, whilst at the same time exuding the very best in bespoke luxury and elegance. The result is a sophisticated and timeless design, and a comfortable family home.

The immediate focus on entering the apartment is the long corridor leading to the main living space, with its magnificent views of Hyde Park itself. Two features serve to particularly distinguish the corridor. Firstly, high-gloss sycamore panels add light and subtlety. And then, on the other side of the panel, an abstract map of the Hyde Park pathways – the bronze clasps and metalized panels and resin of which combine to create a subtle 3D effect. One of the four original bedrooms has been converted into a multi-function study room, which can also transform into a games room. The furniture is made from darkened solid Indian Rosewood in piano high gloss finish, and with the bespoke leather sofa able to convert into a large guest double-bed, this room can also easily be turned into a bedroom. The introduction of a Swedish dry sauna in the en-suite bathroom linked to the study room was one of the most challenging aspects of this project. But thanks to Casa Forma’s strong architectural acumen, this small yet complex feature turned out to be an extremely successful addition to the property. The powder room has been clad in silver & goldleafed, treated with acid to create a tarnished effect for a more distressed and aged look. In the dining room, the bronze profile and glass joinery is framed by a subtly backlit tortoise shell and tiger eye mosaic, while exquisitely coloured brown glass chandelier pendants hang over the dining table.

Sugar Daddies The term sugar daddy per se, was first used in 1923, when Dorothy Keenan King, a model from New York, called John Kearsley Mitchell, her millionaire affair, “heavy sugar daddy” The term “sugar daddy” as we know it today originates in the beginning of the 20th century; however, the concept has existed ever since ancient times, disguised under different names and forms. For example, Greek hetaera, Babylonian naditu, Japanese geisha and Korean kisaeng, were all well educated, talented, smart, good looking and ambitious women. Due to circumstances in their lives or sometimes their personal desire they became entertainers or companions for powerful men of their times. The “sugar daddies” of those times were usually rulers, military chiefs, politicians, philosophers, famous artists and upper rich members of the society. Ever since ancient Greek times, wealthy men were used to having mistresses, usually in order to satisfy their sexual desires. In ancient Greece, women were usually owned by their closest male relative, who would normally arrange a marriage that would suit his own financial/political/ social gains; the woman had no say in this, and needless to say, most marriages did not work out. This led to men older in age looking for younger girls in order to satisfy their desires. Rome was also a place of great lust, an empire where prostitution was at its peak and public orgies were not considered as such a serious taboo. It seems that in societies that were more open sexually, the phenomenon of young girls looking for sugar daddies was widely popular. From the simple nobleman and all the way to Caesar himself, men of the state were no strangers to sustaining younger girls aside from their families. In the times of the English kings, the concept of sugar daddy became the closest to how we know it today, especially amongst royalty. The English royal mistress is a term born in those times and was given to an unmarried lover of the king of England; because marriages were based on

Brandon Wade, the CEO of Seeking Arrangement, goes further in explaining the average US Sugar Daddy on his blog, saying that the average age is 39 years and that there is a 41.6% chance he is married. Furthermore he explains that the average annual income is $263,589 and a sugar daddy in the US on average is worth $5.6 million. They are supposed to spend, on average, $4,357/month on their sugar addiction (this being a sugar baby1). Also, 95.6% are heterosexual. Even though the trend started in the United States of America, it has spread over the world, namely most to the UK, where their numbers are increasing rapidly. Result of this is, that the biggest and most influential US online agency Seeking Arrangement is planning to organize social events for its members in London. These events bring together sugar daddies with sugar babies, for an entrance fee of $100 for men and $40 for women. Seeking Arrangement tries to provide extra services for sugar babies, in our opinion to further dissociate itself from prostitution; this services are career counselling at the event and a plastic surgeon counselling session also at the event. The last event in New York brought together 600 people, with the average age of men being 38 (Daily Mail, 2011). As we have learned through watching many interviews and exploring profiles on Seeking Arrangement.com, sugar daddies are high net worth individuals, with a busy career driven lifestyle. They travel very often and do not

have much time to go on dates or spend time in a relationship. As many state on their online profiles, the reason why they are searching a sugar baby and are interested in an arrangement like this, is that they would like to have a young beautiful woman to take to events and who would accompany them on their travels. Many of them actually offer these young women jobs in their companies, and pay the “allowance” as a regular pay-check. But when honestly discussing

As an internationally acclaimed concert pianist Irina Lankova is used to playing in front of large audiences; her 2007 debut at Wigmore Hall was a sell out and more than 600 people crammed into St Martin’s in the Field in November to listen to her play – just for 50 minutes at lunchtime! But it’s the more intimate environments that she enjoys the most and which inspired her to create a business in 2010 to plan and organise private concerts. Originating from Moscow, Irina naturally specialises in the romantics; Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Chopin, Beethoven etc. and has just finished recording her fourth CD celebrating the works of Schubert. She plays all over Europe as a soloist predominantly in London, Monaco, Paris, Geneva and Brussels. & Brownell, 1984) can be applied. Social support within a group allows improved communication and a perceived closer relationship between group members. This, it could be argued, can facilitate the forming or maintenance of a business relationship.

The idea of taking a step away from the traditional (and potentially very unhealthy) networking formula of frequent five-course meals and cocktail parties is certainly admirable, especially given changing attitudes toward health and obesity – but can you envisage a permanent culture shift to include regular exercise as a means to further business and client relationships, rather than an escape from the pressures of the working day? It may already be happening...

“Sweatworking” (a term supposedly coined in a New York Times article by Courtney Rubin in 2011 and totally unrelated to dubious mass-production practices in the third world) is the product of combining exercise, generally in the form of a group exercise class such as spinning, with business networking as an alternative to the traditional culture of wining and dining clients. The idea has taken off in the USA, and has been exported to the UK with a few high-end London gyms offering networking themed group exercise classes. Especially in the field of health and exercise the UK and USA are prone to latching on to the latest fad, be it training method or diet, often without proper evaluation. On the surface, sweatworking appears to be a great idea – it’s healthy so it must be better than another late night drinking with clients, and probably less of a dent in your expenses account – but let’s examine the viability of the concept as a business tool. The sweatworking concept encompasses both furthering current and creating new business relationships but as it is still in its infancy I’ve chosen to look at the potential benefits as pertains to your current or potential clients. Firstly from a health perspective hitting the gym, rather than the bar, 3-5 times a week is something of a no-brainer. As I touched on in my first blog post for the magazine, regular exercise improves both psychological (mood, stress levels, cognitive performance) and physiological (general health) areas of your life. In the UK 62.8% of the adult population is overweight according to the Health Survey for England statistics for 2010, and this figure has undoubtedly risen as we approach 2013. A cultural switch from an excess of food and drink, late nights and too much time either sat at a desk or behind a steering wheel to one promoting physical activity may not be everyone’s preference but it would be a massive step in the right direction. If I were to base my conclusion solely on the health benefits it would be a simple and emphatic yes!

However from a psychological perspective things get a little more complex. Although making business decisions and forming client relationships over a meal or drinks may not always yield perfect results it is a tried and tested formula. Are you likely to make a better decision mid- or post-workout? Are you still going to make the right impression on your client dripping with sweat, gutting your way through a spin class? Tomporowski & Ganio (2006) actually suggest that cognitive processes such as decision making see a boost both during and after sub-maximal aerobic exercise, and suggest an evolutionary advantage to making good decisions during periods of physical activity. They believe that exercise has an effect on the brain’s allocation of resources, essentially facilitating improved function of areas of the pre-frontal cortex associated with attention and decision making. This means after your workout is the ideal time to sit down with a client and make important decisions – you’ll both be looking at things more clearly. On top of that, they found a reduction in participants’ self-ratings of frustration after exercising. The idea of exercising with a client (or potential client) may seem off-putting from an image point of view. They will see a very different side of you than they would at a formal meeting or in a traditional networking scenario, and they will see you sweat. However, other aspects of your personality such as your motivation and determination will be on show, enabling a potential client to see your abilities first-hand. Exercising with a client or business acquaintance also requires you to pursue a shared goal. This goal can be as simple as completing a spin class, and opens the relationship between two people beyond a traditional business interaction by giving them something in common. Where a goal is shared the theory of social support (Shumaker

From my time in the fitness industry, and anecdotal evidence from people I know who have highpressure jobs, I would suggest that in general the gym is somewhere people go to escape the stresses of other areas of life, especially work. Regular exercise is, as mentioned above, a good way to reduce stress levels. Ogden (2007) looks at various theories on stress and identifies multi-tasking or “overload” as stressful. If work is a source of stress, and exercise is a coping mechanism, actively combining the two seems counterproductive. When I asked a few acquaintances if bringing their networking into the gym would be a good idea I was met with unequivocally negative responses, and I am hard-pressed to recall many conversations I’ve had or heard in the gym which were overtly business related. Here it is very important to differentiate between networking and forming relationships with clients, and bringing your work in to the gym. Mobile phones have no place in a gym or group exercise class, and I would hazard that actively discussing business during a workout would not be well received – save this for the restaurant afterwards, perhaps diving into third quarter financial projections over a couple of mango and wheatgrass smoothies and a salad... So is there a place for sweatworking in business culture? Most definitely, but always consider the fitness levels of those involved (especially your own) before rushing to the advanced spin class. Yes, introducing regular exercise in place of large meals and alcohol consumption can only be a positive step for physical and psychological health. Yes, moderate exercise will improve cognitive function both during and after the session, meaning better decisions and less frustration. Yes, exercising together can help create a stronger bond and highlight positive personality traits. Combining physical activity with business may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and an invitation to go for a run at 7am may not suit all of your clients, but if you (and they) are willing to give it a try you might see a boost in your business relationships and your overall wellbeing. Karl Lagerfeld A Different View Chartwell Magazine editor Victoria Sheppard was one of a few selected guests invited to meet Karl Lagerfeld at the Rolls-Royce HQ in Goodwood, West Sussex. Lagerfeld unveiled his latest artistic offering: ‘A Different View’ – a photographic collaboration with Rolls-Royce.

The illusive Mr Lagerfeld arrived very fashionably late as he was helicoptered in from his Paris home then chauffeur driven in a Rolls-Royce to the secret gallery adorned with his work. Lagerfeld dressed in his signature style - head to toe in black, not forgetting his black fishnet gloves and omitting to remove his dark sunglasses in the near-dark gallery – Lagerfeld is a polar opposite from your average man is his late seventies. Once Lagerfeld has taken a sip of Diet Coke (a product of which he has also had designed special editions of) and is eloquently perched next to a candle lit table Lagerfeld is ready for action and unveils his personal experiences not only with historic car purchases but also his relationship with Rolls-Royce. Despite owning a sizeable collection of Rolls-Royce cars it may surprise you to know that Lagerfeld actually doesn’t drive anymore, he revelled that he suffered “two bad accidents - one in a Merc the other in a Jaguar – I fell asleep at the wheel and on one occasion I crashed into a tree.” – This bought Karl a few laughs from the audience – of which many were Rolls-Royce owners, though many were surprised at the personal admission from a usually private Lagerfeld. The ‘Different View’ collection was shot in The South of France and in Lagerfeld’s’ Monaco home – each shot micro managed and taken by him and taken on a traditional camera. Lagerfeld “uses reflections of trees and the sky” on his pristine Rolls-Royce collection to create unique images which he describes as “concrete abstractions”. Karl explains, “Each of my shots of the Rolls-Royce is the abstract representation of a concrete reality. The technical medium of photography is a welcome means for my artistic work, creating my different view.” Karl announces that photography is not a new passion and he has been honing his photography skills for 25 years. Larger than life, the ‘A Different View’ collection consists carefully selected array of 16 images are printed on handmade paper – personally selected by Lagerfeld. ‘A Different View’ is part of Rolls-Royce ‘Icon of Art’ series of events held throughout 2012 – celebrating some of the most respected artists in the world.

Okewood Hill Estate, Surrey

The Okewood Hill Estate is believed to date from the 16th Century and was probably built on the site of a Roman station. Artefacts have been found in the grounds dating back to the Roman period. Andrew Strauss In the current economical climate many of us can only dream of the thought of retirement at 35 years old, however former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss did just that last year.

In the current economical climate many of us can only dream of the thought of retirement at 35 years old, however former England cricket captain Andrew Strauss did just that last year. Andrew recently invested in Freedom Bay, St Lucia, which he says is “one of the most beautiful spots in the world”, which is where he hopes to spend holidays with his family each year. Andrew was on great form when I met him at Lord’s Cricket Ground, a grand and historical pitch in the heart of London. We sat at the top of the JP Morgan media bubble, which boasted fabulous views across the pitch. Since his retirement last august Andrew hasn’t slowed down his pace – he has impressively already started training for the London Marathon 2013 – clearly not wanting his fitness levels to deplete. Though he did joke that he won’t be doing a ‘Freddie Flintoff’ on us and jump in the ring anytime soon and chuckled “Flintoff the next Mohammed Ali – more like Mohammed Ali’s wife!” though he did state that if he were to change sport it would be to tennis as it would challenge him. Following the announcement of his retirement in August 2012 to the rest of the England Cricket team Strauss was presented with 100 bottles of wine each signifying a memorable time in his career. Strauss said he was working his way through them, though some of them had such significance he wasn’t quite sure what to do with them.

Other than your marathon training, how else have you been spending your time since retiring as captain? I have been spending quality time with the family, doing the odd school run, though the majority of my time has been spent playing golf and lots of it. My favourite moment so far has been playing golf at St Andrews in Scotland. I’m looking forward to taking my children to St Lucia in January. So you don’t fancy golf as an alternative career choice? I wish – the professionals are too good, I think it would frustrate me trying to keep up the pace. It’s not something you can become fantastic at overnight (queue another joke over Flintoff’s boxing). Joking aside I do admire Freddie for getting in the boxing ring – it is dangerous and you can get hurt. Being a professional sportsman I do understand the buzz and adrenaline he craves – there is nothing like national support and a cheering crowd to get your spirits up. Would you consider a career in the media industry, perhaps as a pundit? Participating in some pundit work later down the line may well happen, though media work is not a priority at the moment. I have invested in a property development in St Lucia where I am opening a cricket academy to help grow the involvement in sports for the locals. which means I still get to indulge in some cricket.

What was your proudest moment during your career to date?

Ahh, I need to make them excellent players but I can’t have them beating England! It is important to give something back to the local community and give people opportunities they wouldn’t normally have. I hope to do regular nets sessions with them.

Debuting for England was a dream, and captaining the team as they lifted the Ashes was an honour. It was such an achievement to lift the Ashes away from home soil in Sydney – it made the hard work even more rewarding.

Why did you choose St Lucia to invest and do you have any other properties in your portfolio?

What do you think England’s chances are for winning the Ashes in 2013?

St Lucia is my only property investment other than my main home. I was lucky enough to travel the world with my career and St Lucia was always my favourite place – it is so unspoilt and offers great privacy for me and my family.

I think we have a very good chance, plus there is a home ground advantage. Alistair Cook is a strong captain and a star player; he is pushing the team to success.

Are you still close to the rest of the England team? Yes, you become a family on the road together for about 250-300 days a year so there is a very strong bond between us all. I see Cooke, Anderson and Trott very regularly. How do the team spend their time being away from home for so long? We all relax in different ways, sometimes its nice to go sightseeing, some of the guys play on their PlayStations or chill out watching films. Though it did depend on which country we were in as sometimes we had to be accompanied by security. It is great to escape some of the horrendous weather in the UK. How have you found Nick Cromptons baptism in test opening? He has done incredibly well. Nick has a calm temperament which is great. It is a very exciting time for cricket at the moment. How do you feel the Kevin Pietersen issue has been dealt with in the last few months? It has been a difficult period for all of those involved, however lessons have been learnt and it is now time to move on.

Will you be following the teams’ progress throughout their tours? Yes of course, I am interested to see how they are getting on in India at the moment so I will be tuning into the news later on to catch up.

Corney & Barrow At 230 years old, Corney & Barrow is one of the longest established Independent Wine Merchants in the UK.

The Stevens family bought out the last Barrow in the 1920s, owning and running the company until 1961 when the family, led by William’s grandson Keith (then Chairman) sold Corney & Barrow to United Wine Traders (forerunner of International Distillers and Vintners and now Diageo.) United Wine Traders’ main objective was to own Corney & Barrow’s Scotch whisky stocks for their expanding brand of Scotch whiskys. In 1969, Keith Stevens re-bought the company which once again became Corney & Barrow Independent Wine Merchants. This was done with the help of various City institutions and his friends, the families of which remain the current shareholders. Keith remained Chairman until 1981 (he spent 46 years at Corney & Barrow) and during this time, Corney & Barrow bought several other City Wine Merchants, the largest being W. Coates & Co. in 1959. The company had been founded in 1820 and was the owner of two wine bars, one in Old Broad Street and the other in London Wall.

Still privately owned, Corney & Barrow has grown nationally and internationally, into every sector of the market. They have sales offices in London, Edinburgh, Northumberland and, most recently, Hong Kong. We also run shops in Newmarket and Ayr, having acquired the Scottish Merchants Whighams of Ayr in 1994. Corney & Barrow aims to offer carefully-selected, honestly-priced wines that not only deliver quality and value for money, but also a sense of place. They offer benchmark styles; wines which we believe to be the best examples of a wine style, country, region or sub-region, whether they are wines to drink immediately or wines to lay down. The first incarnation of Corney & Barrow Wine Merchants was in 1780 with the opening of Edward

Bland Corney’s shop in London’s Old Broad Street. Despite the limited selection of Port, Sherry and Bordeaux the business flourished and in 1838 Edward’s son Thomas introduced his cousin Robert Barrow to the business. The Corney & Barrow name was born. In 1912 John Barrow, Robert’s son, formed a Private Limited Liability Company with William Stevens as Managing Director and so the important ‘Stevens Dynasty’ was founded. Corney & Barrow has held a Royal Warrant since that date. Charles Stevens was MD throughout World War II, during which Corney & Barrow survived despite the loss of both family and wine. The latter included fine vintage Port and Cognac, destroyed when the main bonded cellar was fire bombed. Most of the company’s historical records were also lost.

The purchase of W. Coates established the basis of today’s wine bars. W. Coates had run wine bars in the City since the second half of the 19th Century. These wine bars were deemed to have untapped potential and in the late 1970s, with increasing wine merchanting competition, it was decided to diversify into restaurants/wine bars. A top class restaurant, with minor wine bar facilities, was opened at 118 Moorgate, in Corney & Barrow’s name. The restaurant was an immediate resounding success – the City was booming at the time – but it was the wine bars concept that proved most resilient in fluctuating economic climates. In 1985 Corney & Barrow Wine Bars Ltd was formed, which now has thirteen bars across the City of London. The 1980s and ‘90s saw the successful development of Corney & Barrow’s Scottish Operation and the purchase of Whighams of Ayr, Scotland’s oldest wine merchant. The Corney

& Barrow shop in Ayr continues to run out of Whighams’ original cellars. New premises were also opened in Notting Hill Gate, Edinburgh and Newmarket. Corney & Barrow became the first traditional wine merchant to establish a wine broking operation, matching buyers’ and sellers’ requirements. Corney & Barrow (Broker Services) Ltd was granted the Queen’s Award for Export in 1998 and 1999; a unique achievement for an importing wine company. HRH The Prince of Wales visited Corney & Barrow personally to present the Award. In 2003, having outgrown a beautiful old rectory on Helmet Row (City of London) where the company had remained for 25 years, Corney & Barrow Wine Merchants and Corney & Barrow Wine Bars moved to our current offices, an 1805 Grade II listed Custom’s House near St. Katharine Docks close to Tower Bridge in the City of London. The building forms part of the oldest dock offices in the world.

Royal Warrants Corney & Barrow’s Royal Warrants date back to George V in 1912, when they were first introduced. Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition to individuals or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to the Royal family. Lettuce soup with pickled cucumber and crab Serves 4

Ingredients 2 Iceberg lettuces, core removed and finely sliced 50g butter 2 shallots, peeled and diced 100g baby spinach 1 medium potato, peeled and finely sliced 1.5 litres vegetable or chicken stock 1 teaspoon salt (less if you are using a seasoned stock) Juice of ½ a lime 1 cucumber, peeled, de-seeded and finely diced 100ml Chardonnay vinegar 1 tbsp liquid honey 100g picked white crab meat 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Juice from ½ lime Cracked black pepper Sea salt Toasted walnuts, to garnish Parsley cress, to garnish Instructions Heat a large saucepan with the butter. Sweat off the shallots and potato until cooked but not coloured. Add half of the stock, the seasoning and bring to the boil. Add the spinach then 30 seconds later, add the lettuce and cook for 1 minute or until limp. Blend the soup together, pass through a fine sieve into a container sitting in another container filled with ice. Add the remaining stock and lime juice and whisk well until begins to chill. Adjust the seasoning if necessary, bearing in mind that colder food needs slightly more seasoning than hot food, then cover and place in the fridge. For the cucumber, mix the honey and vinegar together then add to a bowl with the cucumber. Cover and leave to sit for 1 hour. For the crab, mix with the olive oil, lime juice and season to taste. To serve; place the soup in the bowls then garnish with the cucumber, crab, walnuts and cress.

This competition is considered the world’s greatest rendezvous for historical racing cars, and attracts experienced collectors, mostly from the United States, Germany, France and Italy. Over 200 cars that have made their mark on their era take part in each edition: Delage, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati and Ferrari are some of the brand appearing on the starting line-up – which also includes some of the first Formula 1 cars built before 1979, headlined by models from Brabham, Lotus and Williams. The matt titanium case as well as the anthracite dial of this model are directly inspired by the historical bodywork features. Equipped with a mechanical self-winding movement chronometer-certified by the COSC, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2012 model displays the hours, minutes, small seconds and the date through an aperture, naturally complemented by chronograph functions and a tachometric scale. The 42.4 mm-diameter case provides glimpses of the mechanical movement through an exhibition back engraved with the inscription “Grand Prix de Monaco Historique”, and featuring a sapphire crystal bearing the insignia of the Automobile Club de Monaco. Feature supercar exhibitors include Bugatti, Pagani, Rolls-Royce, McLaren and Ferrari. Top Marques also welcomes exhibitors who specialise in the finest supercar customisation – it is even possible to have a hot pink snakeskin steering wheel or a diamond encrusted car key. As Top Marques has grown in reputation it has become frequented by internationally renowned personalities and famed supercar collectors including Eddie Jordan, Sir Roger Moore and U2’s Bono. The luxury motor industry proved it is as strong as ever with last years event generating €245million in motor sales. Top Marques’ strong links with the

principality and growing popularity has facilitated areas of the town to be closed to allow test-driving on the Monaco F1 track. Driving a supercar on the Monaco racetrack is fantasy for most, however the buying experience is Top Marques makes this a reality. With a motto of “See it! Drive it! Buy It” a quick blast around the track is certainly encouraged by the car manufacturers and event organisers, it is even possible to have a test ride in the James Bond helicopter.
